PLANT & SOIL SYSTEMS

SEEDS OF EDUCATION AGRICULTURAL PEST MANAGEMENT CROP SCIENCE HORTICULTURAL SCIENCES SOIL SCIENCE SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS TURF & LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT URBAN ENTOMOLOGY You aren’t afraid to work hard and get your hands dirty to make things grow. Neither are we. The School of Plant, Environmental & Soil Sciences offers degree programs in plant and soil systems and environmental management systems designed to provide students with classroom-based studies and handson experiences. Our students enhance their education through internships, part-time work, research, and

participation in clubs to become a part of our diverse community. Our world-class faculty prepares students to work in varied careers, including crop consulting, state and federal regulation, and public relations along with agricultural, horticultural, and environmental industries. Our students also go on to graduate studies in agronomic and environmental sciences or in professional degree programs like medicine or law.

CONCENTRATIONS Agricultural Pest Management: Learn the science behind pest control. Enhance your knowledge of insect, weed and disease pests and explore pest biology, biological control, and plant resistance. Crop Science: Study food and fiber production with an emphasis on crop physiology, crop pests, genetics, soil science, economics, and experimental statistics. This concentration provides a basic sciences background for students who wish to pursue graduate studies.

Horticultural Sciences: Dig into the latest approaches in plant propagation, cultivation, nutrition, plant protection, and the processing of ornamentals, fruits, and vegetables. You also will have the opportunity to complete internships and research focused on breeding or organic, sustainable, and conventional production and management.

Soil Science: Learn the properties of soil and its importance in agricultural production and environmental sustainability. Study

soil health and the factors that affect crop production, soil fertility, soil conservation, air and water quality, and the management of weeds, insects, fungi, and other pests.

Sustainable Production Systems: Learn the latest approaches to the cultivation, marketing, and processing of agronomic crops, ornamental plants, fruits, and vegetables. This concentration is a blend of applied agronomy and horticulture. Turf & Landscape Management: Understand how to manage landscapes, including golf courses, sports fields, botanic gardens, and residential and commercial landscapes. Students learn about turfgrass and landscape management while focusing on plant selection, installation, and maintenance. Urban Entomology: Learn to control anthropod pests and understand how these pests interact with society in urban environments. Study how to manage these pests as you address the behavior, physiology, ecology, and genetics of urban insects.

GROW A CAREER WITH THE HELP OF OUR WORLD-CLASS FACULTY.

STUDENT PROFILE Morrill Scott, a junior studying plant and soil systems, has studied in Honduras, worked with the Agriculture Future of America Crop Science Institute, and completed an internship working on sweet potatoes. “The College of Agriculture and the School of Plant, Environmental & Soil Sciences have provided me with so many great opportunities to grow academically, culturally,

and professionally,” Scott said. “My Honduras experience exposed me to an international application of my major and gave insight to a diversity of people and customs.” Through AFA, Scott has gained valuable connections that he said will help him find internships and jobs. Scott is interested in plant breeding and genetics and plans to attend graduate school after graduation.

THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE GOES BEYOND THE FOUR WALLS OF A CLASSROOM.

FACILITIES Hill Farm: The Hill Farm allows students to gain handson experience in propagating and growing various plants. The Hill Farm is equipped with a greenhouse, shade-house, canyard, raised beds, and field plots.

Ben Hur Farm: Located just off campus, this agronomic extension and research facility allows faculty and students to conduct research examining new cultivars, soil fertility, plant nutrition, methods for pest control, and environmental research.

Soil and Mineral Exhibit: Located on the third floor of Sturgis Hall, the soil and mineral exhibit features displays of various soil and minerals found throughout Louisiana.

Burden Museum & Gardens: Situated on 440 acres 3 miles from campus, this site includes the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens and LSU Rural Life Museum, with numerous specialty gardens, an arboretum and woodland trails providing a window into a rich cultural past.

CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS • Horticulture Club: Students interested in horticulture propagate and grow various plants while enjoying social activities.

• LSU Sustainable Agriculture and Local Food Systems Club: Students learn to grow and market organic produce and enrich the community through sustainable practices.

STUDY ABROAD Travel to Thailand to see how crops are produced in other lands.

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT Gain experience through part-time undergraduate student work assisting faculty and graduate students in field and laboratory research. Students can also gain experience working in the Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Laboratory. Students help in the analysis of soil and plant tissues for nutrients so that recommendations can be given to help grow better plants. Undergraduate student worker positions are also available at the Ben Hur Research Station and the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens.
