ULS FOUNDATION | COMMUNITY MESSAGE

Annual appeal gifts benefit the U Fund, driving philanthropic impact in seven areas:

C

ub Family,

The ULS Foundation Board recently led an energizing retreat focused on aligning our efforts to advance the mission of our beloved school. We are honored and excited to work alongside Director Kevin George to achieve the vision for ULS that he is honing collaboratively with our school community. Service is at the core of who we are, and every day provides moments inside and outside the classroom for students to grow, discover, and learn. Each day, the ULS Foundation is guided by our important responsibility to the 1,456 Cubs whose families entrust us with their education. As a public school, ULS receives an annual allocation from the state to supplement tuition, but it falls far short of the true cost of a ULS education. Philanthropy can step in because you step up. Together, the resources we provide through financial support, our time and talents, and dedication to our family atmosphere enrich our students’ time with us while preparing them for lifelong success as global citizens who lead and serve in an evolving world. From our beginning in 1915, when we welcomed a handful of students, to our present day as a thriving and nationally renowned school, we have remained true to our mission of being a model demonstration school. Your engagement as donors, volunteers, and advocates for ULS sustains our strong culture of total effort in every endeavor. Your partnership moves us ever forward. “Family” is very often the first word shared when we ask Cubs to describe the ULS experience. I hope you share our joy in being reunited this fall via more opportunities to connect in person, including through signature events like our annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate and Grandparents Day. These special experiences offer valued time to be together, reflect, and look with gratitude and optimism toward the future. Go Cubs!

Board Members serve a critical role in the review and approval of all U Fund requests and operating expenditures. Members participate in many of the Foundation’s activities, programs, and events while serving as advocates of the school. All members of the ULS Foundation Board of Directors support the annual appeal and Giving Day each year. The ULS Foundation accomplishes its mission in three ways: • provides opportunities for members of the Cub community to partner with and connect their passions to programs and projects; • raises funds for strategic initiatives that impact student learning across the K-12 spectrum; and • builds and expands relationships through community education and awareness of the school’s needs and successes.

STUDENT SERVICE

Brock Alton (4th grade) wanted to ffnd a way to give back to the Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital after his two-yearold cousin Emmie Kate was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2020. Brock came up with the idea to sell survivor bracelets in honor of other children ffghting epilepsy and donated the proceeds back to the Children’s Hospital. In August, Brock held a “Mufins & Stu ” stand in his neighborhood selling mufins, survivor bands, and co ee. He raised more than $150 and donated the proceeds to the Children’s Hospital gift shop.

Owen Rodrigue (12th grade) In July, Owen Rodrigue, a varsity swimmer, participated in a national challenge to swim 15 miles in 30 days to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. Owen’s inspirations to tackle the challenge were his grandmother, a survivor, and his great-grandfather, recently diagnosed with colon cancer. Owen raised $925 through online donations and a dinner fundraiser hosted by Bistro Byronz and Pizza Byronz, where he worked for ULS parent and restaurant owner Emelie Alton.

SERVICE SUNDAYS Service Sundays is a new concept created by Michael Breard, immediate past chairman of the ULS Foundation Board and ULS parent. ffe program invites parents, students, and teachers to volunteer on one Sunday each month, enhancing a selected area of the ULS campus. ffe first Service Sunday was held October 17 and was a great success. ffe volunteers focused on the courtyards, K-2nd grade playground, turf field, parking lot, and the grounds around the Pennington McKernan Multipurpose Gymnasium. ffe group removed weeds and trash, stationed sandbags, and addressed the care of outdoor rugs. “It was a great chance to have the Cub community, teachers, parents, and students coming together to help make our school a better place,” stated Breard. “We participated in the first Service Sunday and are looking forward to doing it again and again! I saw students of all ages, parents, and faculty all working together — sweating together —building a stronger sense of school pride. My favorite part was hearing a few students say ‘I am never going to litter at school again!’ I am so proud to be a Cub,” shared elementary instructor Paige Zittrauer. Remaining Service Sundays are January 16, February 20, and March 20. Registration is limited to 25 people per workday. A link to the sign-up form can be found in U-Highlights two weeks prior to each scheduled work day.

Brown and Bruno are energized by Eglin’s innovative ideas and said, “ e mental health issues our school children face in a post-COVID world will be something our children, and we as parents, will be dealing with well down the road. is program will be a first step in targeting the root of these issues. Parents need a pathway to be heard and know it is OK to ask for help.” Part of Eglin’s vision, also supported by the annual appeal, is to bring Lynn Lyons, a national presenter on the topic of anxiety in general and in the time of COVID, to campus to lead training sessions for parents and teachers. Eglin explained, “She has a great approach for parents, teachers, and counselors to address anxiety and help students become resilient throughout our current challenges.” “ is is an important time in our children’s lives, and we have an opportunity to create an environment of mental wellness – to develop healthy, well-rounded students who not only focus on academics but also understand they have a support system,” Brown re ected. Starting in kindergarten, Eglin teaches ULS students “how people work” by helping them to identify and describe feelings. is leads to an understanding of what causes certain feelings and how they are shaped through “bad guy thoughts” and “good guy thoughts.” Using a common, consistent language o ers students the opportunity to continuously weave together what they learn with Eglin during her monthly visits to each class. Eglin describes her approach as “structured to build on itself and meet them where they are.” Such continuity is part of what drew Brown’s family to the school. He remembered, “ e Lab School is one reason I felt extremely confident in moving back to Baton Rouge from Los Angeles is 2011. I wanted an environment that supported diversity and inclusion, one that my children could thrive in and be supported. e Lab School checked all the boxes.” In each grade level, Eglin hones in on topics that are especially relevant to that age group, moving from a general understanding of feelings to character, social shifts, and emotional intelligence. A particular area of focus for Eglin is affrmations: positive self-talk, gratitude, and mindfulness. Often, her interactions with students are centered in encouraging them to “show me what their world looks like,” she said. By equipping them with the tools to shape that world, Eglin prepares students to navigate life in and out of the classroom with confidence.

RESEARCH AT ULS:

When Abigail Baumgartner graduated from University Laboratory School in 2019 as a full IB diploma recipient, studying at the college level to become a teacher and educational researcher was not on her list of life goals. Fast forward two years, Baumgartner is back at her high school in a familiar classroom with her sophomore year English instructor Emily Peters, PhD, but rather than literature, she is studying the students in a collaborative research project with Dr. Peters and LSU Faculty Mentor Robyn Andermann, PhD.

ULS Graduate Finds Herself Back in a Familiar Classroom, but in a New Role - Researcher

Now, her goal is to complete her undergraduate degree in English Literature with a double minor in public relations and experimental statistics and to pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching degree. “After my ffrst year of college, I realized through working as a [ Volunteers in Public Schools] volunteer, a swim coach and a church camp counselor that I really wanted to be a teacher,” said Baumgartner. And now that she is back in the

Baumgartner plans to present her ffndings at an upcoming LSU undergraduate research Discover Day Symposium. From there she intends to work with Dr. Peters and Dr. Andermann to ultimately present those ffndings at a professional conference and pursue publication.

}

Baumgartner’s work at ULS is not only noteworthy because she is an alumna, but also because it is being conducted at a time when research is once again moving to the forefront school’s programming. “A signiffcant part of my vision for ULS is for this school to once again unconditionally realize its founding purpose as a demonstration school for the state of Louisiana and beyond,” said Director Kevin George. “Research like Abby’s and others is the ffrst step in making the necessary improvements that are needed in educational systems. It’s an honor for our students and faculty to be a part of that process and often the ffrst beneffciaries of the knowledge gained.”

It gives me a way deeper appreciation of the education that I received, and I want to continue that cycle.

~

As far as ffnding herself in an all too familiar setting to conduct her research, “I remember the lessons the students’ are working on,” said Baumgartner, “but now I fully see the intentionality of what the teachers do here in preparing for those lessons. It gives me a way deeper appreciation of the education that I received, and I want to continue that cycle.”

classroom, that feeling is unreservedly conffrmed. “It is interesting to see a classroom in another way as I prepare for that teacher role. Right now, I see myself as in the middle.” fie research Baumgartner is conducting is a case study on how students come to see themselves as readers and develop an understanding of the importance of literature in the world around them. While observing class discussions and group projects, Baumgartner documents how the students interpret character identities in literature. As the students follow characters through con ict, change and various social intersections, she notes how the students begin to relate and see literature as a re ection of their own life or the lives of those around them.

“On a personal note,” Baumgartner concludes, “It is so special and reassuring to come full circle with the very people who have been with me from the beginning of my educational journey.”
