ub Family,
Amidst extraordinary circumstances this year, Cubs proved that we are truly Stronger Together. A record-breaking 634 donors gave nearly $103,000 on Giving Day, adding to the growing impact made through our Annual Appeal ($455,495 and counting!). We hosted not one, but two, sold out golf tournaments benefiting U-High Athletics. Although nothing can take the place of connecting in person, our talented faculty and K-5th grade students sent love virtually to our grandparents. Thanks to the leadership giving of several proud Cub fans, we’re nearing the $1.3 million goal for the Champions Corner project at the Cub Complex. We’re proud to celebrate their generosity in this issue and look forward to sharing this enhanced space with our families. Inspired by your dedication, our ULS Foundation Board is planning a summer retreat that will result in an aspirational vision for the future and strategic objectives to guide the ULS Foundation over the next 3-5 years. I’m grateful for the selection of our 2021-22 executive leadership team: Andy Blumberg, Chairman; Robin Toups, Vice Chairman; Andi Kirkpatrick, Treasurer; Tracy Rutledge, Secretary; and Michael Breard, Immediate Past Chairman. Michael’s leadership and perseverance during a most challenging year has been inspirational and impactful. He has been an exceptional partner to ULS this year, and I am personally humbled by his unceasing commitment. ULS is stronger because of his investment in us and our success is part of his legacy. As we look toward a new school year, we do so with enthusiasm for welcoming Kevin George for his first school year as part of the Cub family. We are eager to bring the community back together within our classrooms and auditoriums, on the sidelines cheering for the Cubs, and in the myriad of the many ways we stand together in support of ULS.
Mila Sexton, CFRE Senior Director of Development University Laboratory School Foundation

FOR YOUR IMPACT!
We’re grateful for the selfless service of Cathy Giering, outgoing Cub Club Chair. Thank you, Cathy, for your tireless volunteerism on behalf of our parents and faculty! As their ULS Foundation terms draw to a close, we celebrate René Firesheets, Mimi Singer Lee, Kim Hunter Reed, and Peter Kopfinger. Each served with tenacity while distinguishing themselves as judicious
stewards, especially during this nontraditional year. With utmost appreciation, we honor Candace Kouns, Immediate Past Chair. Her steadfast service to our Board and its mission have made a difference in countless ways. Notably, she led our most successful Annual Appeal year EVER! We would not have been able to accomplish this and many other projects without her wise counsel and patient advice.

KEVIN R. GEORGE NAMED ULS DIRECTOR Kevin George has been named Director of the LSU Laboratory School. George began his service in May as only the 13th head of the school, now in its 106th year. “I am so pleased to welcome Kevin George as the new Director of LSU Laboratory School,” said LSU College of Human Sciences & Education Dean Roland Mitchell, PhD. “He now joins a short list of exceptional leaders in this school’s history. The depth and breadth of his leadership experience will undoubtedly serve the ULS community well. I look forward to a continuation of and growth in the tradition of excellence for which U-High is known as we begin this new chapter at the dawn of the school’s second century.” George has more than 21 years of experience in education, including Chief Executive Officer of New Beginnings Charter Management Organization, Superintendent of St. John the Baptist Public School System, Supervisor of Secondary Curriculum for Lafourche Parish and Deputy Network Leader with the Louisiana Department of Education, principal, assistant principal and teacher. He most recently served as the Chief School Accountability Officer for New Orleans Public Schools.

recognized as the 2016 Save the Music Foundation Superintendent of the Year. Awarded to only one superintendent or school CEO each year, the honor recognizes outstanding commitment to music education in his or her school district. After completion of a fellowship with the Southern Education Foundation’s Racial Equity Leadership Network, George has presented at national conferences on topics such as equitable outcomes for all students and building systems to support teaching and learning. On a full football scholarship, George attended Nicholls State University where he earned two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree and was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi honor society. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Executive Leadership from the University of Holy Cross in New Orleans.
The ULS Community can expect in me an individual who believes in the collective. Together, we can do anything.
While serving in these positions, George also held appointments to several statewide committees, including the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education Superintendents’ Advisory Council and the Louisiana Department of Education’s Commission on Assessment and Review and Use in Public Schools (Chair), Advisory Council of Student Behavior and Discipline and the Alternative Education Study Group. He was nationally
George and his wife, Schwanda, have been married for 23 years and have three children – a son, Jalon, who is a Senior Airman in the U.S. Air Force, a daughter, Taylor, who is a graduate student at LSU and Kassidy, who is a rising junior in high school. Originally from Crowley, LA, George graduated from Notre Dame High School. “I have a lot of pride in my hometown because it helped shape who I am today,” he said. And growing up in the Rice Capital of the World, it is no surprise that one of George’s personal claims to fame is “making the best red beans and rice on this side of the equator.”

He counts his parents - Roger and Diane Johnson - as having the greatest influence on his life. “They instilled in me a drive that continues today. No matter the activity, they expected excellence from my siblings and me. Whether I was Farmer McGregor in a 3rd grade play or an officer in our church youth group, they demanded excellence,” said George, adding, “They also firmly believed in the power of education and its ability to change the trajectory of a person’s life.” The result: George and both of his siblings are now all educators. “All of us have earned master’s degrees in education and two of us are pursuing Doctoral degrees,” he said. “I am so proud and excited to begin this journey,” said George. “The ULS Community can expect in me an individual who believes in the collective. Together, we can do anything. I look forward to galvanizing our Cub Family to make our school even more outstanding than it is today. I look forward to working tirelessly with our stakeholders to ensure ULS is always at its best.”

Knock Knock Education Chair Cate Heroman and Knock Knock Maker Coordinator Alexandra Pearson deliver monthly STEAM-rich professional development virtually to a core leadership team of PreK-3rd grade teachers, administrators, and librarians throughout the school year. Educators from diverse backgrounds and experiences learn about innovative practices taking place across the country and network with each other to share what works in their own programs. The University Laboratory School teacher participants worked collaboratively with other sites to build a Rube Goldberg-inspired chain reaction—an activity full of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The expierence provided the adult participants the opportuntiy to reflect on STEAM-rich activities that can facilitate learning in their own classrooms.
FLEXIBLE SEATING
Physical activity has been linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. Bottom line is children need to move. The third grade flexible seating for reading and math groups allows students to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand. “Having an interactive table stimulates imagination and increases motivation to participate in group discussions. Let’s face it! Who wouldn’t want to write on an interactive table and share his/her thoughts in this way all while getting the wiggles out,” said third grade Instructor Amanda Fourrier.

The ULS Foundation was thankful to celebrate the Class of 2022 in person! The Senior Induction is one of U-High’s traditions that make student experiences so very special. As we celebrated our rising seniors, we were reminded of those traditions that U-High treasures, and most importantly, the many people behind those traditions. Twenty-two legacy families were acknowledged from the Class of 2022. These individuals have paved the way for others to continue the journey of the many U-High traditions that remain ahead. SUPPORTING A FAMILY ENVIRONMENT
Rising first grader Aubrey Grace Shoptaugh ’33, daughter of Mark ’01, is a fifth-generation Cub whose great-greatgrandmother, Ruth Dupuy, was part of the Class of 1922 when the school was located downtown at the Pentagon Barracks. She would later marry John Shoptaugh, who served U-High as principal for two decades, and would celebrate their three children earning diplomas from her alma mater. Son James Shoptaugh ’50 continued the family tradition by sending his children: Cathy Landry ’73, David ’75, longtime coach Johnny ’76, and Mark ’76. With such deep connections and pride, Landry was excited to join classmate Rolfe McCollister in meeting his challenge to contribute on Giving Day. His outreach was a reminder of her own U-High experience and those of her sons, Riley ’04 and Eric ’08.
“It offers a whole-child, well-rounded education – academics, athletics, arts, music, and service opportunities,” she explained. “It serves the full spectrum, and everyone graduates prepared to be happy and successful adults.” Landry has long supported U-High, giving in areas where she feels she can make an impact on the “whole child” approach. That’s the distinguishing factor that stands out as she reflects upon the role U-High has had in the lives of now five generations of Shoptaughs: “I think U-High has always had that culture of you’re here, we’re going to nourish you, we’re going to support you, we’re going to help you be successful by giving you lots of different tools. That’s what U-High has always been. It’s a family environment.”

When the Grisby family relocated from Virginia to Louisiana three years ago, they quickly found a welcoming school family at U-High. Kearra ‘25 and Kameron ‘28 are thriving, and parents Latreace and Kevin are committed to giving back. Latreace, who is earning her MBA at LSU, became aware of Giving Day as both an LSU student and a U-High parent. She was eager to be part of the observance. “More than ever this year, it was the excitement – to participate in a giving challenge with other families. The school increased the awareness and engagement to unify the community, which created a feeling of camaraderie.” The Grisbys were blown away by how the school excelled during the pandemic, emphasizing how fortunate they feel to have their children attend. “Given the intrinsic value of the education our children receive, we should contribute above and beyond tuition,” said Latreace, adding, “There is an immediate return in outcomes related to both the academic and social growth in the students. It’s an opportunity to say thank you for the gift of a valuable education.” As an associate director for Bristol Myers Squibb, Latreace knew she wanted to leverage her company’s 1:1 matching gift program to achieve a more significant impact. “At every opportunity I can use it, I do,” she explained. “Most employers value employees who take the initiative to use their matching programs. When employees exercise the match program, they can extend the company’s goodwill to support charitable organizations.”
Contributing is about being a part of something bigger.
The Grisbys contribute to several causes that are important to them through the matching program; investing in U-High is a priority: “Contributing is about being a part of something bigger. Your children attend the school and as parents, you want to be valuable contributors to the school and the greater community.” [continued on page 43]

GIVING DA2 On March 10, more than 600 Cubs from across the country came together to raise $102,988 during the 3rd annual U-High Giving Day. In 2019, 269 donors contributed $13,725 during the inaugural Giving Day. Last year, efforts focused on lifting up the Cub community in lieu of fundraising due to COVID-19, and 111 donors stepped up, contributing $8,055. This year’s historic win took a tremendous effort from all areas of the Cub family. Thank you to our Alumni Ambassadors, ULSF Board of Directors, parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, and alumni for stepping up and supporting U-High.

More than $33,000 was raised for the Tuition Assistance Fund. Gifts to the Tuition Assistance Fund ensure that a family’s financial circumstances don’t stand in the way of earning a ULS education. For more than a decade, tuition assistance has supported Cubs at all grade levels whose household income qualifies them for financial assistance. These generous gifts close the access gap for students who would not otherwise be able to attend ULS. Thank you to Sally Richardson ’00 for sharing what U-High meant to you! https://youtu. be/5yH12B_8U0o

I am honored to contribute to the tuition assistance for ULS. When I was admitted as an incoming 6th grader back in 1987, my family was fortunate that ULS was affordable and very well known for its stellar approach to education. U-High changed the direction of my whole life and it is my honor to give back to kids in my same situation.
ACADEMIC IMPACT INITIATIVES
Gifts to Academic Impact Initiatives surpassed $58,000. These generous contributions sustain the quality of our model K-12 environment by enhancing the educational experience of each and every Cub, providing cross-disciplinary classroom advancement, faculty development, and strengthened campus security that meets the evolving needs of our campus community.

As the Cub community has thrived, we have outgrown the Cub Complex’s facilities. Together, we are proudly creating an outstanding space for fostering toptier experiences that Cub families can enjoy together.

uring the 2018 football season, U-High was on the cusp of earning back-to-back state football championships as proud parents Gordon and Shannon (Field) McKernan (classes of ’84 and ’85, respectively) cheered on their son, QB John Gordon ’19, at the Cub Complex. “I was walking through that corner, and it needed some attention,” Gordon shared, recalling the spark of an idea to create a true “Champions Corner” courtyard honoring the school’s championship teams. Soon, the wheels were in motion on a project that would ultimately grow – anchored by McKernan’s generosity as lead donor – to include a home-side concessions and restroom facility, an open-air pavilion, and a Champions Flag Plaza, which evolved from the courtyard concept that McKernan had envisioned amidst the backdrop of Friday night lights. For the McKernans, memories of cheering on the Cubs span

the experiences of John Gordon, Charlotte ’18, Meredith ’15, and Riley ’13 – who continued a legacy begun by their parents, Gordon and Shannon McKernan. Investing in the vision for Champions Corner at a leadership level was a natural choice for Gordon, who saw it as “a great way to recognize the sports teams and what they’ve accomplished – girls and boys.” McKernan knows the dedication of student athletes well: he’s not only the father of a former U-High football player and cheerleaders but was also part of back-to-back championship basketball teams at U-High. With a lifetime of U-High memories to reflect upon, McKernan has great appreciation for the school’s impact on his family. He shared, “The education is just a facet of it. U-High is not just about an education; it’s an experience. It entails the education and the lifelong relationships with friends, faculty, and coaches. Those things combined make attending and graduating different than anywhere else. It’s an unmatched value.”

t Walk-On’s, our culture is all about bringing people together,” said Brandon Landry, founder, coowner, and CEO of Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux. “We are committed to creating a space for hosting experiences that strengthen and celebrate the spirit of hometown athletes while building a stronger sense of community.” With that commitment at the forefront, Landry saw in Champions Corner the opportunity to align the Walk-On’s brand with helping to facilitate academic, athletic, and personal growth for all students. He explained, “The Cub community has always been one of remarkable strength and reputation. We want to continue to create top-tier experiences for this amazing
school and are very excited about this partnership opportunity.” Just as fans visiting the Cub Complex connect and share experiences, patrons of Walk-On’s do the same – over great food and sports – and the partnership with U-High expands those connections further into the community where Walk-On’s growing brand started. “Athletics and community events create foundational moments for students and their families,” Landry said, adding, “These experiences leave lasting memories, and we are so excited to be a part of this at U-High.”

“We look at it as a school priority as much as an athletic one,” David explained. “This is LSU; this is part of LSU. We’re big supporters of LSU, both for academics and for athletics.” Bridging their extensive support of the university to include U-High is also a meaningful way to honor the experiences of two generations of the Manship family: David’s son, Jake ’01, and grandsons, Charlie ’31 and Carter ’34, and Richard’s grandchildren, Ella ’26 and Hunter II ’30.
Richard, too, values the Cub Complex as a hub for uniting families. That spirit of community is, for him, a hallmark quality of U-High that is interwoven in and out of the classroom. He’s seen firsthand that the community is strengthened by the breadth of experiences that Cub families bring to the school.
As their grandchildren’s U-High journeys continue, David and Richard are proud to be part of investing in their school. David said, “U-High has an excellent athletics program. I don’t know if our grandkids will play sports, but it will give them a sense of David said of the motivation for their gift, “It’s an excellent school, and it’s affiliated with LSU. SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT: THE CHRISTIAN PRICE BAER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A smile that could brighten a room. A laugh that could light up a day.

Andrew’s three daughters, rising sophomore Mackenzie, rising fifth grader Vivian, and rising first grader Christian, named in honor of her uncle, are now all second-generation U-High These are the sentiments often used to describe Christian Price Cubs. Debbie said she enjoys attending ULS sporting events Baer, ULS Class of 2000, for whom the ULSF Christian Baer and activities as a grandparent to support her granddaughters Memorial Scholarship is named. as she did her sons and to share in new memories with many familiar faces. “I always see so many of Chris and Andrew’s A member of the Swim Team and active in the ULS Choir, high school friends. It’s wonderful to see them as adults with Christian’s high school friendships transcended these two activities. “Christian was friends with everyone and always went children of their own who are now students at U-High and out of his way to make sure no one was ever left out of anything. carrying on some of the same traditions,” she said. It was nothing for us to have 60 or 70 people over at our house As it is for so many Cubs, “Chris’s time as a student here meant on the weekends for a bonfire or a crawfish boil,” remembers his a lot to him. It is where he spent the majority of his life,” said younger brother, Andrew ’02. Andrew. So, when Christian passed away suddenly in 2009, the “Chris and Andrew were as close as any two people could be and were always supportive of what the other was doing,” says Mom and now U-High Grandparent, Debbie Baer Anderson. “I was a music major at LSU,” Debbie notes, “so music has always been a part of their lives … It was not surprising for both boys to participate in something musical as they grew older and even less surprising that Andrew followed in the steps of his older brother and joined Choir as well.” “Some of my fondest memories are the two years Christian and I were in Choir together. Penny Hallman was the director then. We were in two musicals, ” said Andrew, adding, “I also remember during Christian’s senior year, we visited New York City and performed at Carnegie Hall. That was a great experience for me and my brother together.” By 2002, both brothers had joined the ranks of U-High alumni, but “We both kept in touch with our teachers and high school friends,” said Andrew. “U-High was such a big part of our family and still is.”

Baer family knew right away the best way to honor his memory would be in a gift to U-High. “Christian’s life was so short. We wanted to do something that would help his loving spirit live on,” said Debbie.
For the past 12 years, the Christian Price Baer Scholarship has been presented each year at graduation by Andrew and his daughters to a 13-year U-High Cub who has been a member of the ULS Choir and who plans to attend college. “This scholarship is a tribute to Chris,” said Debbie. “He had the most kind, loving, giving heart. It is comforting to know that each year, a U-High senior receives this gift from him. The best thing each can do to honor him is to go through life being kind and loving others, just as Chris did.” Over the years, gifts to the scholarship have ensured the continued celebration of Chris’s legacy and honored 13-year Cubs’ special bonds with the school. Contributions to the Christian Price Baer Scholarship can be made throughout the year in any amount by visiting lsufoundation.org/GivetoULS and noting the scholarship The Christian Price Baer Memorial Scholarship in “Gift Comments”.

PREPARING CUBS FOR LIFE Harvard Busse was attending Baton Rouge High School in the late 1920s when Demonstration High School (now ULS) recruited him for his academic excellence. He earned his diploma, continued his education at LSU as the first in his family to go to college, and carried his U-High experiences with him throughout life. Grandson and U-High parent Donald Glynn reflected, “I saw it in the way my grandfather behaved, how he acted, how he treated people. He picked that up from being around the quality of the people and education he got from U-High.”
Glynn, father of Cubs Catherine Glynn (’27) and Kylie (’17) and Conner Cronin, feels privileged to give back to U-High a bit of what the school has given his family. “You get more than what you pay for, for sure. You’ve got the best teachers around. They have talent. They have kindness. When you send your kid off for 8 hours a day, you’re trusting the institution to influence your child in a great way, and I think the teachers at U-High 100 percent do that. It’s comforting to know that they’re coming home with the correct preparation for real life and ready for college.”
Glynn’s mom, Jo Ann Busse, shares his gratitude and enjoys seeing her grandchildren gain the high-quality, wellrounded education that her father did nearly 100 years ago. “The programs that are offered outside of the classroom are so wonderful there. There are so many schools that don’t have the programs that y’all do. And the school shares accomplishments with the grandparents – it’s incredible to be able to share that.”
SHOWING GRATITUDE
Of the many lifelong friends Sarah Kilpatrick Wylie (’05) met at U-High, there’s a clear standout: husband Richard (’03). Now, daughter Evie (’33) is a Cub, and Wylie has already seen firsthand the importance of giving back. “Tuition covers the basics, the costs to keep the school running. However, there are so many things beyond that that are important to maintain, such as the Tuition Assistance Fund, vision and hearing screening equipment (we found Evie needed glasses thanks to this), new books, and the list goes on and on,” she shared.

Wylie volunteered as a Giving Day ambassador, motivated by having a child at the school. It turned out to be an even more rewarding experience than she expected. “I got back in touch with many people that I graduated with and have continued to keep in touch with them, which has been wonderful.
For Wylie, volunteering as a parent also offered an opportunity to celebrate the legacy of her grandparents, who worked at LSU, loved Baton Rouge, and sent their four children – including Wylie’s dad, Kevin (’76) – to U-High. Several cousins have followed in their parents’ footsteps down the U-High halls.
Wylie shared, “It’s fun because I was in high school when Katlyn (’15) and Elizabeth (’16) [Upp] were in kindergarten, and now my baby cousin James (’22) has been there while Evie has been in kindergarten. Her face lit up with so much joy on her very first day seeing him there, too.” Wylie has also enjoyed seeing the way the school has grown and evolved over time while staying true to its core mission. She said, “The same fundamentals that we cherished going there are still in place: faculty who really love and care for their students’ well-being, students who respect one another, a love for LSU, and pride to be a part of the Baton Rouge community and a unique part of the LSU culture … I am so indebted to U-High and giving shows a small piece of my gratitude.”
