ULS FOUNDATION COMMUNITY MESSAGE

C

ub Family,

Wow! Last year, you truly defined our motto of “total effort in every endeavor.” Throughout the year, your generosity made ULS history, and every ULS Foundation event sold out. It is my honor to be able to thank you for: • Surpassing $500,000 raised through the ULS annual appeal for the first time ever. Your support of the U Fund ultimately reached $542,725 contributed by 908 families. These annual appeal gifts direct funding to seven crucial impact areas: STEM, fine arts, liberal arts, speaker series, curriculumbased travel assistance, faculty development, and campus pride. •

Exceeding expectations on our fourth annual Giving Day, celebrated March 23. Nearly 800 Cubs contributed more than $118,000 in one day in support of our focus funds: U Fund and the Tuition Assistance Fund. Together, you successfully met our three challenge gifts and won both LSU Giving Day Power Hours (outpacing donor participation throughout LSU’s campuses for the second year in a row). Making the inaugural ULS Foundation Golden Gala a runaway success that yielded $165,000 in new funding for academics, arts, and athletics. We have much more on the Golden Gala within this issue. I hope you are eagerly looking forward to next year’s event!

As I reflect upon our remarkable year together, I am grateful for the dedication of our growing volunteer base and for your loyal investment as donors. We are fortunate to be led by an exceptional board of parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends who are deeply committed to continuous enhancement. This year, hundreds of new donors joined us in supporting ULS. Whether you gave to ULS for the first time last year or have supported the school loyally for many years, I hope this issue of Cub Roar fills you with pride about the impact you are making possible for every Cub.

Just how much of a diflerence does it make? Well, we asked High School Science Instructor Steve Babcock to help us ffind out. Environmental science students used a eV rnier Lab Quest with a temperature probe to show kindergarten students a graphical display of how conditions change moving from sun to shade. They discovered that the diflerence in temperature is 25 degrees! Wow! Thank you to our U Fund supporters for helping keep our students and teacher's cooler on the playground!

The Bus Fund, sustained by the U Fund, allows the school to maintain a fleet of busses and purchase new busses as the need arises. The last time ULS purchased a bus was more than six years ago, and we have officially outgrown our current fleet of two busses, often having to rent a third bus to accommodate student travel. We are grateful to be able to purchase a new bus thanks to support to the U Fund during the annual appeal and on Giving Day.

chool Counselors Angela Murray (grades 6-9) and Kristy Gremillion (grades 10-12) observe a national trend of unclear messaging –and resulting confusion for adolescents –surrounding substance abuse. Some substances are widely available (like vapes) and in various stages of legalization (like marijuana and opioids) but still dangerous to developing minds not yet ready to make decisions about substance use. With a combined 3 years of experience, coupled with master’s degrees and multiple certications in counseling, Angela and Kristy are experts on helping adolescents navigate life’s transitions. Kristy said, e“W can help by giving them preventative measures and explaining the consequences.”

making in all areas of life.” Angela echoed the importance of that foundation and its farreaching impact, saying, Of“ tentimes, substance abuse occurs with other risky behaviors... As a demonstration school, we can share what we are doing with other schools.”

Early ideas for funding impact are purchasing hands-on learning tools, including “drunk goggles” and cross-curricular resources for teachers, and broadening the school’s participation in national and local preventionfocused programs. Providing resources for parents is also a priority. Kristy explained, a“P rents and mentors have the greatest inuence –they can model good decisionmaking and know what to look for.”

Angela added that, according to the most recent research from the National Institutes of Health, drug usage is down among adolescents and that the “perception of risk is one of the biggest determinants of substance use.” Those perceptions begin developing at an early age, making early intervention important. The American School Counseling Association recommends starting education and awareness in fourth grade, which is oftentimes 1-2 years prior to the rst exposure. Endowed support from ULS grandparent Margaret oW mack Hart will provide annual funding through a new Addictive Disorders Support Fund centered on oering the types of preventative measures that can make such a life-changing dierence. Kristy explained the impact: “Implementing preventative measures now will prepare students for future decision-

HANNAMAN MEMORIAL Though longtime ULS kindergarten teacher Shannon Hannaman grew up in Shreveport, her LSU connections proved to be a powerful pull to Baton Rouge–and to teaching. She shared, “Everyone in my family was a teacher. My grandmother always told me that I could count on LSU.” Years later, that belief in the power of education and counting on LSU would inspire Shannon to personally invest in the Jay Hannaman Tuition Assistance Fund, established by Cub parents in memory of her husband. Jay, who was born in Baton Rouge and boomeranged back home as an adult, passed away last summer and shared Shannon’s passion for making quality education accessible. “Teachers run in both of our families,” she explained, adding, “He valued education, and so does everyone in his family.” During o W rld aW r II, Shannon’s grandmother earned her master’s degree at LSU. Following the war and a sudden divorce, education equipped her to support her children, but options were limited. Shannon reected, “She couldn’t send her kids to U-High because she was a single mom. That’s what’s in my heart for tuition assistance.” Both Shannon and Jay were raised by single moms and had a personal understanding of “how tight resources can be.” As a ULS teacher for 16 years, Shannon often experiences the sacrices families make to provide an outstanding education for their children. The new fund in Jay’s name is her way of ensuring that their vision is

possible. She said, “Sometimes people look at somebody and they think they have everything they need, and yet we don’t often know the whole answer. There are so many people who are struggling to give their kids what they need.” Motivated to celebrate Jay’s life in a meaningful way, Shannon generously made a leadership gift to the Jay Hannaman Tuition Assistance Fund. For Shannon, the gift to kick o an eort to endow the fund is a way of honoring her and Jay’s gratitude for being able to earn a good education. She shared, “U-High teaches students how to become independent learners and how to think critically –and especially in terms of writing. Being able to write and think critically has helped me so much in life, and I want children to have that opportunity.” Cub families and friends are invited to ensure the sustainability of this fund by contributing to an eort to endow it, providing a pathway for awarding the scholarship year after year. If Shannon’s story inspires you to join her in making a U-High education accessible to families with nancial need, please visit lsufoundation.org/Hannaman to make a one-time or recurring contribution to the Jay Hannaman Tuition Assistance Fund.

kinesiology. e Baudins noted the role of performing arts regardless of one’s area of study. roughout middle school and high school, participating in the Cub rP ide Band instilled discipline, taught Brad and Olivia how to work as a team, and helped them to develop leadership skills. Stan said, “It was an overall great experience socially and educationally, and it gave them a lot of school pride and spirit.”

ough Brad (’19) and Olivia (’21) Baudin haev taken their musical talents onward from U-High to sLSU’ Tiger Marching Band, their Cub rP ide Band legacy continues through a new scholarship established in their honor.

“O ur kids had such a great experience with the band at U-High that we wanted to give back,” said Stan Baudin, explaining his and wife aP m’s decision to fund the Baudin aF mily UHS Cub rP ide Band Scholarship wA ard. e“ W hope it encourages more kids at the Lab School to try out for the band and participate and haev the same types of experiences they did.” e Baudins’ memories of experiencing their children perform as part of the drumline began when each started band in fth grade. nA nette eW st, who retired in Ma, ywas longtime band director for the school and a mentor to Brad and Olivia. “Shes’ been a wonderful inuence in their

lives,” aP m shared, adding that eW st’s personal attention to each child led them to the instrument she felt would be the best t for them. oF r Brad and, two ey ars later, Olivia,eW st thought playing percussion instruments was best suited for both. Brad and Olivia learned to play and master multiple percussion instruments throughout their time in the band at U-High, which led them to serve as drumline captains during their senior ey ars. Giev n the positive experiences they had and the close friendships they developed within the band, being part of Tiger Band was a shared dream. oF r Brad, that dream was fullled in 2019, and playing and marching for the fans of the aN tional Champion LSU Fighting Tigers that football season was an added bonus. Like many of their fellow Tiger Band members, Brad and Olivia are not music majors: Brad is studying computer science, and Olivia is majoring in

Happily, for Stan and aP m, that transition has included the opportunity to watch their children perform together again and to be part of the crowds they entertain. ey fondly remember watching Brad and Olivia perform drumstick tricks while playing alongside their fellow Cub rP ide Band members and seeing their enthusiasm for soaking up every second of the experience as seniors. oT day, that enthusiasm is as fervent as ever amidst much bigger crowds in Tiger Stadium, with two longtime fans proudly cheering on a couple of Cubs in the drumline.

oN w that Brad and Olivia are in college, Stan and aP m can reect on the value of a ULS education through a new lens. aP m said, “U-High absolutely – 100% - prepares children for college. I feel like it was a ev ry easy and seamless transition from U-High to .LSU ”

GIVING

Cubs accepted the challenge and unlocked all ve of the Giving Day Challenges, shattering participation goals for each along the way. The Piazza Family 250 donor challenge was unlocked by lunch, and the McCollister family 500 donor challenge was unlocked shortly after 5:00 p.m. The Temple, Williams, and Byronz eR staurant Family Challenges all surpassed their goals and received double the number of donors needed to be unlocked. U-High also had the most donors on campus for each of the two LSU Power Hour Challenges, securing an additional $10,000 from the LSU Foundation! Thank you to the Byronz eR staurant Family and Temple Family for inspiring our Cub community to rise to this impressive victory!

If that was not impressive enough, the Cub Community nished #1 for the entire LSU campus for the number of gifts received, having almost triple the number of other colleges/units on campus. Go Cubs! Once again, the U-High community proved it is tenacious and relentless in pursuit of excellence. Cubs are generous, spirited, and passionate! Thank you for investing in opportunities that enhance the educational experience for every Cub -1K 2 and give our faculty resources to ensure the education our students receive can maek their dreams, goals, and aspirations for the future, no matter how ambitious, a reality.

Senior Crawsh Boil

ENGAGEMENT UNDERWIT Y B

The Class of 2022 celebrated with a final “Walk-Out” through the halls of U-High on May 13. Students in grades K-11, faculty, staff, and senior parents cheered and congratulated the seniors as they walked through each memory-filled area of the school one last time as students. After the ‘WalkOut,” the seniors gathered in the old gym and enjoyed a crawfish boil in their honor. The crawfish was catered by Mitch Hopkins ‘08, owner of Crawfish on the Geaux. The seniors were also treated to snowballs and a cake. We congratulate and send best wishes to our newest alumni, the Class of 2022.

Welcome ULS Class of 2035!

Elementary Principal Christa Leon and ULS Kindergarten teachers hosted a welcome event for the parents of the ULS Class of 2035 on April 13. Mrs. Leon and instructors Shannon Hannaman, Kelly Kelly, Cathy Rosenfeld and Amy Martin as well as associate teachers Virginia Stocker, Kristy Shearer, Jill Palmer and Heather Harris coordinated and organized the event. This event was sponsored by and made possible through generous donations to the ULS Foundation.
