Student Spotlight: Ben Downs Originally from Latrobe, PA, Ben completed a bachelor’s degree in history and Black studies from The College of Wooster in 2008. While at Wooster, he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society as a junior, received the Cummings-Rumbaugh History Prize as a senior, and earned three letters as a member of the baseball team. Following graduation, he worked as Assistant Director of Admissions at Randolph College and served as an assistant softball coach. He earned his Master of Science degree in Kinesiology-Sport Administration from Mississippi State University in 2016. His research interest is in the use of historical methodology to strengthen sport management, focusing on the evolution of multipurpose facilities in urban centers. Ben is a doctoral student being advised by Dr. Chad Seifried.

Chad Seifried was recognized as Research Fellow by the North American Society for Sport Management in 2016. He also won the 2017 Southern Management Association Best Reviewer Award for Organizational Theory and Management History. Further, he was recognized as an Outstanding Reviewer by the Eastern Academy of Management in 2017. Damon Andrew was named the recipient of the 2016 Lisa Bethea Kavanagh Outstanding Young Alumni Award from the University of South Alabama.

Marcella Otto

From Berlin, Germany, Marcella came to the United States to join the Southern Illinois University Swim and Dive team in January of 2012. Graduating from SIU with a Bachelor’s of Science in Sport Administration in 2014 with two minors in Coaching and Speech Communication, Marcella was a member of the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team for four years, awarded the MVC Leadership Service Award, and the recipient of the Presidents Academic Excellence Award. She earned her Master’s of Science in Education in Sport Studies from SIU in 2016 and received the Graduate Student 2015-2016 Achievement Award. Her research interest is in college athletics and human resources. Marcella is a first year doctoral student being advised by Dr. Mike Martinez and Dr. Chris Barnhill.

Student Spotlight: Phil Mull Philip is a native of Milpitas, CA a suburb in the Bay Area. Philip has just completed the online Masters in Kinesiology Sports Management program in just 15 months. Philip also has a Bachelors in Business Management from Colorado State University. He currently is a college football coach at Yuba College in CA, and a former student athlete at San Jose City College, as well as California State University, East Bay. With athletic and coaching experience, combined with 15 plus years of corporate business experience, he hopes to combine this with his real life experience with his academic achievements to someday work at a major university as an Athletic Director. “I chose to leave the typical nine to five desk job to pursue a new career in the athletics industry. LSU online helped me achieve a better understanding of sports management and prepared me for my next endeavor. GEAUX TIGERS!!!”

Other News! Kwame Agyemang awarded the 2016 Tiger Athletic Foundation (TAF) Undergraduate Teaching Award. Per Svensson awarded the LSU Faculty Research Grant in the amount of $10,000 for 2016-2017. Per Svensson awarded research contract by Laureus Sport for Good USA Foundation to examine the ‘Model City’ Sport for Development initiative in New Orleans.

Alumni Spotlight: Christine Colwell

Christine Colwell

Christine is a 2016 graduate from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Prior to attending LSU, Christine studied at New Mexico State University and received her Bachelors of Business Administration in Marketing and Entrepreneurship in 2014. At NMSU, she served as the vice president and president of ZTA sorority, ambassador for the College of Business, and worked for the NMSU Athletic Department. While pursuing her MS degree at LSU she worked for the Tiger Athletic Foundation as an intern in their Premium Seating Department. Christine is currently pursuing her Juris Doctor at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at LSU and plans on a career in sports law.
