2017 Applied Sport Management Conference MORE SPRING NEWS!

LSU Sport Management Case Study Team: 1st Place ASMA Conference

In February 2017, the Lod Cook Hotel and Conference Center and the College of Human Sciences & Education hosted the Applied Sport Management Conference. The three-day conference provided a variety of attractive activities such as academic presentations (oral and poster), professional industry panels, work-inprogress discussion, a case study competition, and a career/ internship fair. In conjunction with the Applied Sport Management Association, the LSU Sport Management faculty served as an integral part in both the planning and execution of the conference. Dr. Mike Martinez served as the conference director, while Dr. Chad Seifried led the Works in Progress session. Drs. Per Svensson and Kwame Agyemang organized the inaugural case

study competition, while Dr. Chris Barnhill directed the LSU team, which won first place in the event. Overall there were 37 oral presentations, 15 poster presentations, eight works in progress submissions and four professional development panels. Over the threeday event, more than 250 attendees participated, representing a total of 37 academic institutions, including five international universities. “I believe our 2017 ASMA conference was a great success, due in large part to increases in attendance from both faculty members and students,” Martinez said. “Within the academic field of sport management, there are very few opportunities for faculty who conduct applied research to present at a conference that is specifically framed as an applied conference.” The ASMA Conference fills this void and will take place in Waco, Texas next year at Baylor.

The LSU Sport Management Graduate program hosted the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) in February 2017. The site visit produced a positive evaluation from the Site Committee by recognizing the program as compliant across 8 assessment principles. Congrats to our Case Study team at the 2017 ASMA Conference for placing 1st! Group members were: Nicole Batista, Ashleigh Keller, and Aaron Boseman. Dr. Chris Barnhill served as the team coach. Congrats to Tyler Burke. Tyler secured a coveted internship opportunity after graduation with the Minnesota Vikings as member of the Innovative Leadership Rotational Program.

Other News! Amy Werdine (Class of 2016) will soon complete her work experience with the Minnesota Vikings in the Innovative Leadership Rotational Program. The ILRP is designed to provide leadership experiences across multiple work areas rather than in a single department. In October 2016, Amy traveled to New York to rotate through the NFL headquarters in order to learn how the NFL operates from as a team.
