rent— from two gentlemen callers. To keep things straight, she orchestrates their comings and goings very strategically. Her carefully calculated scheme falls to pieces when Harriet’s men arrive at her flat on the same day followed by their irate wives. With cases of mistaken identities and hilarious outcomes, this classic British farce will have you laughing in your seat! Winner of the LTA “Audience Choice” survey.

Director’s Notes
“They think he’s gangster number one So they’ve made him the favorite son And that goes to show Anything Goes!”
That is not a quote about the recent presidential election or the current state of our politics, although it very well could be. It’s a quote from one of Cole Porter’s most famous songs and the title ditty of the show you are about to see.
As we’ve spent the past few months rehearsing this classic of musical theater, I found myself continually reminded of how current many of Porter’s lyrics are—and that’s quite a feat for a show that is rapidly approaching the 100-year mark.
The songs in this show are among the most famous in the great American songbook. “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “Let’s Misbehave” and, of course, the title song have now become perennial favorites, recorded by everyone from Garland to Gaga. So in some ways, we still aspire to Porter’s view of the world: sophisticated, urbane, well-traveled and witty. I use a term to describe Porter’s quintessential modus operandi: “swell-egance.” It’s put together yet relaxed. It’s formal yet laid back. It’s classy yet bawdy.
The contradictions contained within Porter’s music reflect his own life. Born in Peru (no, not that exotic), Indiana, he left the Midwest to study at Yale and began composing music early on for its college theater troupe. Eventually he got to New York, and urban life instantly beguiled him. He married a rich widow, Linda, with whom he had, from all accounts, a very stable, loving relationship and true companionship, and yet he was also attracted to men and engaged in various same-sex affairs throughout his life. Although he loved America, he felt more at home in Europe, particularly on the French Riviera, where he often vacationed with a group of faithful friends: Elsa Maxwell, Monty Woolley, and Vernon and Irene Castle, among others. He was also close friends with AfricanAmerican entertainers such as Bricktop and Josephine Baker.
Porter was never simple. He was always more than one thing at the same time, reflecting his complex, sophisticated taste in music, food, drink and people. He was a bon vivant but also a dedicated wordsmith, a party animal yet a workaholic, sometimes spending days working on one single rhyme or lyric to get it just right.
And yet he never liked to let the public see him sweat. After a crippling riding accident in 1937 that left him in constant pain and needing assistance to walk, he still continued to write beautiful, upbeat songs, and although some darker tones emerged, his work was still full of ebullience, sass and charm. He never gave up hope, never despaired (at least not publicly) and never let himself get beaten by circumstances. In many ways, he was the embodiment of American idealism and resilience, without ever losing his sense of humor.
After the premiere of Oklahoma! on Broadway in 1943, the press asked Porter what he thought of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s colossal hit. He responded drolly: “Wonderful! If you think it takes TWO men to write ONE song!”
Always a jokester, always teasing, always living life to the fullest, Porter left a legacy that is unmatched for its sophistication, musicality and rhythm, influencing an entire generation of American composers that would follow—and yet always remaining sui generis as only he could.
So I hope you enjoy your two-hour cruise on the SS American. If we take you back to a more carefree, more swell-egant time, even if briefly, then we’ve done our job.
Stefan Sittig

Come Play With Us!
There are many ways to be involved with The Little Theatre of Alexandria!
Volunteers are an important aspect of LTA. There are many opportunities to be a part of LTA with a variety of events and times! All are welcome to participate regardless of experience.
LTA is one of the oldest community theatres in the Washington D.C. area thanks to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. A successful stage production requires many volunteers working behind the scenes before and during the run of the show. Everyone performing in and nearly everyone you see working on an LTA show is a volunteer.
As a volunteer community theatre group, LTA welcomes anyone interested in becoming involved. There are lots of opportunities at LTA, for all experience levels! So, come play with us.
For more information visit our website www.thelitletheatre.com and click on “Volunteer”, or call the business office at 703-683-5778.

Cristina McConnell (Co-Stage Manager) is excited to be back at LTA stage managing after a little hiatus. Favorite shows she’s worked on include Cabaret (DOM and LTA) and Hair,Into the Woods, 1776 and Avenue Q (all at LTA). Cristina would like to thank everyone in this wonderful cast and crew and her awesome husband, Matthew, for all his love and support!
Jeff Nesmeyer (Co-Set Design/Set Construction) is pleased to be working at LTA once again and sharing the duties of master carpenter with Jim Hutzler. Jeff has been set building for the past several years at LTA, and this is his fourth venture as co-master carpenter. Jeff and Jim built sets for To Kill a Mockingbird, Spamalot and this season’s A Christmas Carol. He thanks LTA for its confidence in his carpentry abilities.
Deidre (De) Nicholson-Lamb (Set Painting) most recently painted Pride and Prejudice and The Miracle Worker for ACCT and Grey Gardens, Allergist’s Wife and TheRocky Horror Show (Pearl Award—Excellence in Set Painting) for LTA. In 2012, De painted LTA sets for Sweeney Todd and Witness for the Prosecution (nominee for the Pearl Award — Excellence in Set Painting) as well as Then There Were None for ACCT. De painted four of the six stage sets of LTA’s 2006 season: Into the Woods (Pearl Award—Excellence in Set Painting), Auntie Mame, The Desperate Hours and Footloose. De decided to broaden her theater horizons when she not only painted but designed the sets for TheWill Rogers Follies; Saturday, Sunday, Monday; and The Visit at LTA and painted the set of Alden Theater’s Red Hot and Cole (award nominee). De thanks LTA for the fun we had with this show and looks forward to her next adventure.
Larissa Norris (Makeup Design) has been nominated for four WATCH awards for her makeup design or hair design in local shows. She received nominations for makeup for Dreamgirls (DS) and 9 to 5 (TAP); for her bloody special effects makeup for Bug (DS); and hair nominations for the retro styling for A Streetcar Named Desire (LTA). Larissa is a makeup artist in the area; check out Larissa Norris Makeup Artists on Facebook to see her work.
Micheal J. O’Connor (Master Electrician) frequently works as master electrician at many local community theaters—most recently on Steel Magnolias, The History Boys and A Christmas Carol for LTA and Mary Poppins for RCP. He was co-ME for To Kill a Mockingbird with Pam Leonowich, a favorite partner. He can often be found backstage or in the tech booth, always in the dark.
Shannon Robichaud (Wardrobe/Assistant to the Choreographer) is delighted to be making her LTA production debut in Anything Goes! This is her first experience with helping to produce a show, but she has been a longtime supporter of the theater. She has been tap dancing for more than 10 years, and she thoroughly enjoys musicals. Shannon would like to thank her family and friends for their support of her dance and musical interests. She would not be here today without them!

They have costumed many LTA shows, including the recent productions of West Side Story, History Boys, WATCH Award winner Hairspray and LTA Award winners 1776, The Full Monty, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Rocky Horror Show and Into The Woods. Kit Sibley (Hair/Wigs) occasionally ventures away from the sewing machine to design hair for smaller shows, and has even been nominated for a couple of awards. However she is somewhat befuddled to find herself doing hair for a big cast on a cruise ship in the 1930’s. Many thanks to Susan Boyd for her help and advice!

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a support group of interested and dedicated people who support the theatre with special contributions. Additionally, the Council has three social events per year, provides for the winter holiday decorations for the theatre, and maintains the Council Memorial Garden. The Council was organized in 1961 and presently has about 80 members, most of whom are long-term and wellestablished LTA members. Past contributions include: a new range for the Council Green Room of LTA, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for the new theatre seats, new draperies in the Council Room, the computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $200,000 and we gratefully accept donations from friends and members to assist in our support of LTA. We welcome new members and if you would like to become a member of the Council please feel free to contact the theatre or any of the Council officers. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and are proud to be supporting one of the best community theatres in America today.
