Director’s Notes
Charles Busch, the author of The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, wrote about his play: “It’s rather autobiographical. I come from a matriarchy, articulate and witty, that all I have to do is memorize their dialogue. Of course, I may have to leave town once it opens.” Busch grew up Jewish in New York City with his Aunt Lillian, his Aunt Belle and sisters, and he captured that unique perspective, language and sense of humor perfectly in his play. New York and Jewish humor complement each other in their mocking, colorful and sometimes shocking expression. There will be times when you say to yourself, “Did she really say that?” And she did! That’s what characterizes New Yorkers and Jews: telling it like it is, from the heart, without filter. While these may be particular traits, the story Busch tells speaks to everyone: getting lost in the middle of life and finding one’s way. Our heroine, Marjorie, is mourning the passing of her therapist and unfulfilled in her intellectual ambitions. Her mother doesn’t get her. Her husband is devoted to his charitable pursuits. Despite encouragement from the doorman, it takes the arrival of a mysterious person to reignite her confidence. Charles Busch got that from his aunts to become a performer and writer entertaining millions. We hope you will be agog with laughter with our tale.
I read this play 10 years ago and laughed out loud to the intriguing looks of fellow Metro riders. And I have laughed even more as I have had the privilege to work with such a gifted cast (Jack, Janice, Karen, Marianne and Omar) and production team. I thank the LTA Board of Governors for their confidence. This production would not have been possible without the support and dedication of Brooke Angel and Vanessa Arvidson and the commitment and encouragement from the two funniest producers I know, Jay Cohen and Jim Howard. I dedicate this production to my mother, Bobbi, a New Yorker (born and raised in the Bronx), artist and world traveler who had the best laugh. She introduced me to theater as a kid, and it stuck. She was her own invention, and she continues to inspire me. Thank you, Mom.

Leslie Reed (Co-Properties Design) was enchanted by LTA’s warmth and creative genius the first time she was asked to help with the props of Blithe Spirit. Looking for a Group Activity or Fundraising Idea?
Another great way to help LTA continue to be a vibrant part of our community is by having your organization host one of our Partners in Art Nights. Partners buy out the house for designated performances (at a discounted rate) and give away tickets to members or sell them as a fundraising opportunity. Partners may use our lovely Council Green Room (at the left of the lobby when you enter the theatre) for a pre-show reception. Shows are available for our 2015-2016 season at reasonable rates.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a support group of interested and dedicated people who support the theatre with special contributions. Additionally, the Council has three social events per year, provides for the winter holiday decorations for the theatre, and maintains the Council Memorial Garden. The Council was organized in 1961 and presently has about 80 members, most of whom are long-term and wellestablished LTA members. Past contributions include: a new range for the Council Green Room of LTA, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for the new theatre seats, new draperies in the Council Room, the computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $200,000 and we gratefully accept donations from friends and members to assist in our support of LTA. We welcome new members and if you would like to become a member of the Council please feel free to contact the theatre or any of the Council officers. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and are proud to be supporting one of the best community theatres in America today.
