Director’s Notes
Watching The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) by the Reduced Shakespeare Company is kind of like surfing on TV: first a history channel, then a cooking show, followed by a rap, a melodrama, and a game of football. Prepare to be involved! We want our audiences to be a part of this show.
Our three talented actors will weave their way through all 37 of Shakespeare’s comedies, tragedies, and histories in record time, playing all of the roles. This is Shakespeare as you never expected to see him. Long, serious topics are reduced to short, silly comedies. The comedies are presented in one convoluted reading justified by the idea that they all share the same plot devices. The histories are framed in a football game. The fourth wall doesn’t exist. Shawn, Hans and Dave will often speak directly to you and may try to get you involved with what’s happening onstage. Don’t be shy; come join the roller coaster ride. I don’t want to give too much away, but suffice it to say that this play might change your view of the Bard.
It has been a joy to romp through Shakespeare’s plays with these three amazing actors. Shawn, Hans and Dave: Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your time, your talents, your sense of humor, and your stamina. I’ve been fortunate to work on this production with the fabulous design team of Kevin, Jeff, Helen and Janice, as well as the expertise of Caroline, Jim, Steve and many other remarkable people who have added so much to the look and feel of this production. You know who you are, and I thank you with all my heart. Producers are the unseen heroes in any play, and ours are the best. Thanks to Russ and Rebecca for being there with everything and anything that was needed, most of all encouragement, support, enthusiasm and humor. Finally, tremendous thanks to two of the best stage managers around, Christine and Joan. This truly couldn’t have been done without you.
“All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players.”
I hope you’ll play with us tonight!
“The rest is silence.”

Meet the Cast
(in alphabetical order)
Shawn g. Byers is an actor, director and PREeminent Shakespearean expert. He is not so much a Renaissance man, more a Late Antiquity man. He seems to be thrilled to be back onstage at LTA, but who can really tell with these actor types. Roles he is most noted for are Arles Struvy et al. in Greater Tuna and Matt in Dog Sees God (LTA), and Ramón in Love! Valour! Compassion! (DS). The latter being noted only because he was very naked, and trust us, these were not good notes. His directing past includes Laughing Stock, Plaza Suite and Funny Money (LTA), Bent (DS), The Actor’s Nightmare and Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You (PCP). He is also the Vice President of the board at DS. He considers himself to be a lucky guy to be able to work with such a talented cast and crew and to have such wonderful friends and family to support him. Most of all he is lucky that his best friend, his husband, is also his biggest fan and strongest supporter.
Hans Dettmar is excited to return to LTA, where he last appeared as John Dickinson in 1776, and ecstatic to tackle this play with such a great cast and crew. He once appeared in “The Scottish Play,” in which he narrowly escaped the fate of being shot with a crossbow, but yet still bit the big one with a combination of ax, spear and dagger to the throat. Other local roles have included Carl-Magnus in A Little Night Music (TAP), Kenny in Laughter on the 23rd Floor (TAP), plus a variety of losers, writers, shysters and Nazis in various productions. He was nominated in 2008 for a WATCH Award for outstanding lead actor in a play for his portrayal of John Merrick in The Elephant Man (CCTw2F). As always, thanks to his best friend, Marianne.
Dave Wright last appeared on the LTA stage in his award-winning performance as Allan Felix in Play It Again, Sam in 2010. Dave’s other recent credits include: The Great American Trailer Park Musical (Norbert), November (President Smith), Rabbit Hole (Howie), Glengarry Glen Ross (Levine), Misery (Paul), Batboy: The Musical (Sheriff), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (McMurphy), A Midsummer’s Night Dream (Bottom) and Picasso at the Lapin Agile (Freddy). In addition, Dave is also the creator/moderator of the professional improv troupe Last Ham Standing, which performs regularly at locations in Herndon and Purcellville. Most importantly, he would like to thank his wife, Angey, for her continued love and support as well as their daughters, MacKenzie, Emma and Madison, for teaching him the true meaning of unconditional love.

Jeffrey Scott Auerbach (Lighting Design) is pleased to be returning to LTA for this fun romp through all of Shakespeare’s plays. He has also designed with other local community groups such as ACCT, DS, TAP and MCP, to name a few. He has been honored with several WATCH nominations through the years: Next to Normal (MCP), Reefer Madness and Altar Boyz (DS), Life With Father (ACCT) and most recently Little Shop of Horrors (TAP). He wants to give his thanks to his family, David and Katie, for all the love and support they have supplied over the years. He hopes you enjoy this show.
Helen Bard-Sobola (Properties Design)had her handiwork last seen on the LTA stage as co-props designer for Monty Python’s Spamalot, for which she received a WATCH Award and the LTA Award for Excellence in Prop Design. She is very excited to be working with the crew and cast of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). Other backstage prop or assistant stage manager travels include: Spring Awakening, Dreamgirls, Psycho Beach Party, Reefer Madness, The History Boys and Love! Valour! Compassion! at DS. Helen was last seen on stage as Golde in Fiddler on the Roof (SMP). Says Helen: “Take young people to see live theater—it will change their life!! As always, love and thanks to my family of Ally and Mike. Enjoy the show.”
Jamie Blake (Co-Wardrobe) is thrilled to be working with this fabulous cast and crew. Jamie has spent over 30 years at LTA and loves every minute of it. She has been on and off the LTA Board of Governors, has won the Best Producer Award twice, and long, long ago won the Outstanding New Member Award at LTA. Special thanks to her mom and sister Liz for keeping her balanced, and to Rocco, who gives her sweet kisses when he wants to go out. Always to Dad and Beamer. Enjoy the show!
Kimberly Crago (Master Electrician) is delighted to be a part of the LTA family. She studied theater at the University of Southern California and Northwestern University. She wishes to thank lighting designer Jeff Auerbach and all of the good folks at LTA.
Christine Farrell (Co-Stage Manager) is pleased to be part of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) and excited to be working once again with director Joanna Henry. Past productions at LTA include The Odd Couple (Female Version), The Game’s Afoot, 33 Variations, Rabbit Hole and Company. In addition, Christine has stage managed Arcadia, Inherit the Wind, The Lion in Winter, Parade, Amadeus, A Little Night Music, The Wiz, Bye Bye Birdie, A Midsummer’s Night Dream, Showtune and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for DS and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (TAP).

Four of her productions have received Ruby Griffith Awards. She recently attended a three-day workshop in NYC for theater teachers/directors, focusing on sessions with working Broadway professionals on auditions, scene work, song interpretation and choreography.
Donna Hauprich (Co-Wardrobe)has worked backstage for several shows since joining LTA. She is ready and excited to share wardrobe duties with the resident expert, Jamie Blake. Donna finds working backstage fun, meeting so many talented actors, despite having to wash their clothes so often. By day, Donna works as a massage therapist.
Jim Hutzler (Set Construction) has enjoyed set construction, set painting and stage management on many productions at LTA and is thrilled to be working with designer Kevin Lane again. Although Jim builds on most LTA sets, he headed the set construction for God of Carnage and Monty Python’s Spamalot. Jim thanks all who volunteer their time to make LTA the special place that it is.
Mary Hutzler (Set Painting) has enjoyed painting sets at LTA, ACCT and PCP. It is a pleasure to work with the talented and enthusiastic crew and cast of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). In 2005 and 2012, respectively, her work for It Runs in the Family and Heaven Can Wait won the LTA Pearl Award for Excellence in Set Painting. She was nominated for WATCH Awards for It Runs in the Family, Heaven Can Wait and Move Over, Mrs. Markham. Mary thanks to the cast and crew for including her in this production.

His choreography has been honored with WATCH Awards for Richard III, Veronica’s Room, Romeo and Juliet, Kiss Me, Kate and The Miracle Worker. His work was last seen at LTA in Monty Python’s Spamalot. As always, Steve thanks the love of his life for getting him started on this incredible journey.
Grant Kevin Lane (Set Design, Costume and Hair Design) has designed sets and/or costumes for over 70 shows. His last set design for LTA was for God of Carnage, for which he was awarded the LTA Set Design Award. This season, he designed sets and costumes for Laughing Stock and costumes for Grey Gardens. His next project is costume design for Nice Work If You Can Get It at TAP. Says Kevin: “Thanks to all the talented seamsters that helped on costume construction and painters and builders who helped realize my vision, and to Joanna for taking me along on this project.”
Janice Rivera (Sound Design) has designed sound for several LTA productions, including Dirty Blonde, Monty Python’s Spamalot (for which she was nominated for a WATCH Award), Caught in the Net and Cantorial (also a WATCH nomination). She is a regular sound operator here in LTA’s “Sky Lounge.” You may have seen her onstage recently as well as Camila Rosario in In the Heights (LTA), Aldonza in Man of La Mancha (MCP), Lucille in Parade (SMP) and Ethel McCormack in Footloose and Mrs. Walker in Tommy (LTA). Janice is a video specialist via her post production company, Offbook Productions.
Caroline Schreiber (Assistant Director) is a major Shakespeare enthusiast and delighted to be part of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). Caroline holds a B.A. in theater performance from Scripps College in Claremont, California, and frequently works as an actor, director and teaching artist throughout the D.C. area. In her daily life, Caroline is the programs manager at Encore Stage & Studio in Arlington, where she has produced nearly 20 shows and directs two musicals each summer.
Rebecca Sheehy (Co-Producer) is absolutely delighted to work with co-producer Russell Wyland and director Joanna Henry on this LTA performance of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). This is such a witty show—with a funny cast and talented crew. Her recent LTA projects include properties design for In the Heights, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, Monty Python’s Spamalot and The Game’s Afoot. Rebecca wants to thank everyone at LTA for being so friendly and to thank her family, friends and all the dedicated volunteers who make these performances so much fun. Enjoy the show!

Meet the Crew
Russell M. Wyland (Co-Producer, Set Dressing, Rigging) has been a member of LTA for almost 26 years and has served the theater in many capacities—as President for three years, as Chairman of the Sound Department and the Selection Committee and, most recently, as Governor for Production. Russ has produced numerous shows, including Dirty Blonde, Monty Python’s Spamalot, 33 Variations and Hairspray. His least conspicuous contribution, however, is the rigging (curtain-hanging, to the uninitiated); he has rigged every show staged by LTA during the past 12 years. He has received four WATCH Awards (including Outstanding Musical for Spamalot and Hairspray)and 15 LTA Awards (including six for Outstanding Production and three for Outstanding Set Decoration).

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a support group of interested and dedicated people who support the theatre with special contributions. Additionally, the Council has three social events per year, provides for the winter holiday decorations for the theatre, and maintains the Council Memorial Garden. The Council was organized in 1961 and presently has about 80 members, most of whom are long-term and wellestablished LTA members. Past contributions include: a new range for the Council Green Room of LTA, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for the new theatre seats, new draperies in the Council Room, the computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $200,000 and we gratefully accept donations from friends and members to assist in our support of LTA. We welcome new members and if you would like to become a member of the Council please feel free to contact the theatre or any of the Council officers. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and are proud to be supporting one of the best community theatres in America today.
