Director’s Notes
Even the best of friends sometimes make the worst of roommates.
Many of us have seen the male version of The Odd Couple, whether as a movie (with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon) or as a television show (with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall), but did you know that the original 1965 Broadway production starred Walter Matthau and Art Carney as Oscar and Felix? The female version opened on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre on June 11, 1985. Directed by Gene Saks, it featured Rita Moreno and Sally Struthers as Olive and Florence. In the female version, the situations haven’t really changed, but the way the characters handle them has. While keeping the original play’s humor, Neil Simon has more fully developed the characters. Olive and Florence have more balance. These twogive reasons for how they act. The characters of their friends are also more layered. And for those of you expecting the Pigeon Sisters, you’re in for an enjoyable counterpoint!
In the original, the poker players are there mainly to annoy Oscar and Felix. However, with the Trivial Pursuit players in the female version, Simon enriches the personalities. For these women, playing the game is secondary to relaxing, talking, gossiping, and just spending time together away from their everyday lives. The dialogue reflects this. At one point, Olive even says, “This place is like group therapy.” The Trivial Pursuit game gives them topics and questions to respond to, which enables further interaction.
Simon’s gender-switching version outdoes the old script. The most effective changes are due to his reworking the script for women. “I like writing women very much,” Simon said in an interview the same year the female version of The Odd Couple opened. “Men are more closemouthed about their real feelings, whereas women, if the situation is right, open up.” His words have proved to be true at our rehearsals for this production. This cast has opened up to one another on myriad subjects, which has brought us closer and enabled us to understand and appreciate one another on several levels. We even shared photos of ourselves in the 1980s and played a game of Trivial Pursuit! This has carried over to the character relationships you see on the stage.
By the end of the play, Olive and Florence have both changed a bit and grown a bit. They are two mismatched friends who accept each other for who they are—an essential life lesson.
I’m immensely grateful to LTA for the opportunity to do this play with Jenn, Gayle, Michelle, Kat, Elizabeth, Natalie, Phil, and Brendan. Each one brought something special to the rehearsal process. The hilarity, commitment, enthusiasm and support for one another was evident from the start. As always, it’s a pleasure to work with such a talented and creative group of designers who add to the environment, mood, and overall look of the production and what a joy it was to have had Rebecca and Bobbie by my side throughout the process.

Thanks, always, to Kerry who got me working that first show. And J.J. and Suzanne—keep smiling down on LTA.
Charles Dragonette (Co-Stage Manager), since giving up his “theater widow” status five years ago, has enjoyed occasional forays into the footlights, and some props design, but has mostly remained backstage, in the dark, mingling with and supporting the amazing talent that brings theater alive at LTA, ACCT, ACT and PCP. Spoiler alert! This is a VERY funny show; I hope you leave here with at least a sample of the aching sides and shortness of breath we have experienced from laughing so hard.

Jim Hutzler (Set Construction) has enjoyed set construction, set painting, and stage management on many productions at LTA, and is thrilled to be working with Joanna, Alan and Eddie, and this incredibly talented cast and crew on The Odd Couple (Female Version). Thanks go to all who volunteer their time to make LTA the special place that it is.
JeanKoppen (Co-Set Decoration) recently served as set decorator for BlackHole (PCP), which was also her playwriting debut. Jean has served on the props crew for multiple LTA shows, and performed in Company (LTA), A Little Night Music, 9 to 5, Bye Bye Birdie and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (TAP). Jean’s plays have been performed locally at Active Culture Theater, the Atlas Intersections Festival, and the Kennedy Center Page to Stage Festival.
PamLeonowich (Co-Master Electrician) is proud to be following in her mother’s footsteps. Her mother served with the British Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) during World War II as theatre manager, stage manager, lighting designer, and projectionist on numerous British military bases. Many thanks to Eileen, who saw her in the audience in 2005 and asked if she’d like to be an LTA volunteer. As a result, Pam has worked on more than 65 LTA shows on the Lighting Crew.

Big thanks to Joanna for being such agenerous director and mentor.
Meet the Crew (continued)
LeslieReed (Set Painting)was enchanted by LTA’s warmth and creative genius the first time she was asked to help with the props of Blithe Spirit. A magical door had opened to reveal the world of make-believe fabricated from hard work, imagination, superb talent, and a super abundance of cooperation and creativity. Gathering props, painting sets, calling volunteers, researching, details, cleaning, sweeping and sewing are all building blocks of a production. Being able to do it in the LTA community is truly a gift.
Margaret Snow (Co-Wardrobe) is a great Neil Simon fan as well as a fan of the director, producers, crew and cast, and is pleased to be joining with Barbara as mistresses of the wardrobe for the ladies’ version of The Odd Couple. Human relationships have many fascinating and problematic twists and turns, and she finds that a gastronomic solution is often superior to a psychological one. If you would like some words of wisdom ask her about The Bridal Banana.
Keith Waters (Photographer) is photographing his sixth production at LTA. He has been an event and lifestyle photographer since 2010 and his images have been published in national and local magazines and newspapers. Keith is also an actor who has appeared in network and cable television productions and major motion pictures, as well as on several area stages, including LTA. www.KxPhotos.com.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a support group of interested and dedicated people who support the theatre with special contributions. Additionally, the Council has three social events per year, provides for the winter holiday decorations for the theatre, and maintains the Council Memorial Garden. The Council was organized in 1961 and presently has about 80 members, most of whom are long-term and wellestablished LTA members. Past contributions include: a new range for the Council Green Room of LTA, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for the new theatre seats, new draperies in the Council Room, the computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $200,000 and we gratefully accept donations from friends and members to assist in our support of LTA. We welcome new members and if you would like to become a member of the Council please feel free to contact the theatre or any of the Council officers. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and are proud to be supporting one of the best community theatres in America today.
