presents Two on the Aisle, Three in a
Sometimes the best comedy isn’t onstage but in the parking lot! That’s certainly the case for the members of the Neighborhood Actors Summerfun Repertory Theatre who, due to a lack of wing space, spend their down time in the parking lot around the van of an aging hippie/now-turned techie. Those looking for refuge at the asphalt oasis include a stressed-out artistic director, a wanna-be diva, and a very innocent ingenue. In the end, the company proves the old adage that somehow, some way, the “show must go on.” And it does…just not always as planned. Director’s Notes

“Go where you never thought you’d go.”

When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again before Mom’s big wedding. Mother and daughter learn what it is to be a family and to experience each other’s lives firsthand, if only for a day.

Freaky Friday was presented at Signature Theatre in Shirlington several years ago, which is when I first saw it. I immediately knew this was a show I wanted to direct. I had the opportunity to speak with Signature’s then-Artistic Director at a Virginia Theatre Association conference a few weeks later, and he promptly introduced me to a representative from Disney Theatricals. We discussed Freaky Friday, and that conversation confirmed what I felt. I needed to direct this show. I love its message. How would we learn to understand one another if we truly had the chance to walk in each other’s shoes for a day?

Christopher Ashley, the director of the Signature production of Freaky Friday, said, “It’s one of those shows that really cries out to be a musical. It’s so hard to really understand what’s happening in someone else’s reality, inside someone’s head, and there’s something enduringly powerful about the idea that for a day you can live someone else’s life, inside someone else’s body, and be inside their viewpoint. And it’s amazing to tell that story with music, because musicals get inside people’s heads uniquely well.”

Freaky Friday takes place in today’s Chicago. A contemporary musical with a variety of music genres, it reflects individual styles that both are universal and echo the diversity of today. The fun and spontaneous teenagers are prominently displayed against the more cautious and practical parents and teachers. Misconceptions, disagreements and compassion are notably evident, just as they are in life.

Freaky Friday is a challenging show in many ways but also a most rewarding one. It’s been exhilarating to work with this cast and production team and to experience their enthusiasm and inventiveness. The themes of appreciating others, self-acceptance and mutual respect were demonstrated by every cast member, designer, crew member, musician and production team member throughout our rehearsal process. I am especially grateful to our inspiring Music Director, our creative Choreographer, our intrepid Stage Managers and our steadfast Producers, as well as our remarkable cast. You all brought the vision to life.

2

I would like to thank everyone who worked on this show for their perseverance, support and talents. It definitely “takes a village,” and I am grateful for this Freaky Friday “village” and the LTA Board of Governors for trusting me with this production. I am so indebted to you for all you give to keep our theater alive.

“It’s not the finding; it’s the searching; it’s the hunt for who you’ll be; not the seeing, but the looking for the things you just can’t see”

SYNOPSIS

“Freaky Friday is about a mother and daughter, Katherine and Ellie, who magically switch bodies for a day. Chaos ensues as they experience life from each other’s perspective and learn valuable lessons about empathy, understanding, and the importance of family. This musical captures the challenges and joys of navigating relationships while reminding us of the importance of walking in someone else’s shoes.” — Theatre Trip
