At first all is well, but as the evening progresses, the rum flows, the gloves come off and the night becomes a sidesplitting free-for-all with parents behaving badly! Director’s Notes

Agatha Christie, meet Ken Ludwig! Christie, the queen of the murder mystery; Ludwig, the crowned prince of modern farce … put them together and you have The Game’s Afoot!

It’s always a good sign, when I’m presented with a comedy to direct, that I laugh out loud on the first reading. The Game’s Afoot offered me that pleasure. It’s a fun piece of whodunit nonsense, peopled by some of our favorite kinds of characters: Theater Folk Behaving Badly. There are inflated egos, grand gestures, melodramatic moments of wounded pride, boundless bitchiness and great camaraderie.

The Game’s Afoot manages to be a loving embrace of the Agatha Christie formula of murder mystery—a group of people isolated by weather, or on a train or ship or plane (in this case, it’s a snowstorm)—combined with the farcical escapades for which Ludwig is famous. An inspector calls, and the false confessions, red herrings, and … well, I’m not going to ruin it for you!

I hope that The Game’s Afoot provokes the same laughs in you (along with some serious frights and gasps) that it provided to me on the first read.

Pasqualino

Meet the Cast

alphabetical order)

Melissa Dunlap (Daria Chase) is delighted to be making her debut with the Little Theatre of Alexandria. Some of her favorite roles have been Cecily in The Importance of Being Earnest, Elmire in Tartuffe, Laurey in Oklahoma! and Muriel Tate in Plaza Suite. Locally, she has worked with the McLean Players, Providence Players and Vienna Theatre Company. Overseas she appeared in many SHAPE Players productions. She wishes to thank family, friends and co-workers for their support, encouragement and indulgence of her crazy schedule.

Michelle Fletcher (Inspector Harriet Goring) was a very active part of the Brussels community theater scene, particularly with the American Theatre Company. She was busy both onstage and behind the scenes. Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, Amanda in The Glass Menagerie and Signora Morelli in Lend Me a Tenor were favorite roles. She was artistic director for the ATC for two years and directed The Front Page. Inspector Goring is her first role stateside, and she thanks LTA for the opportunity of renewing with the theater.

Maureen R. Goldman (Aggie Wheeler) is so thrilled to be back on the LTA stage playing the hilarious Aggie. LTA has a special place in Maureen’s heart as this is where she met her husband four years ago while playing Nancy in Oliver!, and where he orchestrated a surprise proposal three years later.Other favorite D.C. roles include Elle Woods in Legally Blonde: The Musical (RCP), Olive in ...Spelling Bee (LTA), Linda in Play it Again, Sam (LTA), and the Producer’s Daughter in The Rise and Fall of Annie Hall (Theater J). Maureen earned her B.A. in theater and business at Northwestern University and M.A. in arts management at George Mason University. She works in digital marketing and stays busy managing events, email marketing and video production and has recently started a podcast for her company. She thanks the wonderful cast and crew of this enchanting and exuberant play, Rachel and Bobbie for being such an important part of her LTA experience, her family and friends for always cheering her on, and her wonderful husband, Josh, for making her happy every day.

John Henderson (William Gillette) is excited to return to LTA for The Game’s Afoot after appearing as Inspector Hubbard in Dial “M” for Murder in 2013. He has appeared locally in productions with the British Players,Silver Spring Stage and the Foundry Players and in over 15 productions with the St. Bart’s Players in New York City. One of his favorite roles was Professor Moriarty in a college production of William Gillette’s Sherlock Holmes

Pamela Kasenetz (Madge Geisel) is excited to be returning to the world of acting after a long hiatus to complete her medical training. Theater accomplishments include Sarah Siddons in The Actor’s Nightmare with the Chevy Chase Players and A Thurber Carnival with the Vienna Theater Company. On television, she was seen in “Southern Fried Homicide” on the ID Channel and “American Super/Natural” on the Weather Channel. Thank you to my family and friends for their support; to the cast and crew for helping produce a spectacular show, and to Frank, our director, for giving me the opportunity to be a raging goofball on stage!

Chuck Leonard (Felix Geisel) enjoyed his time as Robert in LTA’s Proof last year … so much that he has since helped out with painting or construction crews for Streetcar and Rocky Horror. Favorite roles in the D.C. area include Flan in Six Degrees of Separation (Port City Playhouse), Lazar Wolf in Fiddler (Castaways Repertory Theater), Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Chesapeake Shakespeare Company), Vinnie in Lucky Stiff (Shadowblock), and Emile de Becque in South Pacific (Baltimore Actor’s Theatre). Before moving to Virginia, Chuck was a professional company member and director of education for the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company in Baltimore. He was the director of theater for both Miami University-Hamilton and Episcopal High School in Alexandria and currently is a professor at George Mason University, teaching for the Honors College. Chuck has taught theater to every age and grade level but one. Which one, you ask? It’s elementary, my dear.

Joe Quinn (Simon Bright) made his stage acting debut four years ago playing Hugo Peabody in West Potomac High School’s production of Bye Bye Birdie, directed by Frank Pasqualino. Now Joe is reunited with Frank in his debut performance at the Little Theatre of Alexandria as Simon in The Game’s Afoot. Joe is taking a gap year from Syracuse University, where he studies film and drama.

Patricia Spencer Smith (Martha Gillette) is happy to return to LTA after 10 years. She was last seen in 2003-2004 in The Music Man and Lend Me a Tenor. After enjoying 20 years in Northern Virginia theater, she married and moved to Connecticut in 2005. She has since been active on the stages of Connecticut and Rhode Island, most notably Rhode Island’s Granite Theatre, where she was cast in plays by Ken Ludwig and Agatha Christie, among others. She was last seen there as the hateful Emily Brent in Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. She’s happy to be a bit more likable this time around. She would like to thank her husband, Norman, and her daughters, Colleen and Kristin, for their constant loving support.

Meet the Crew

Rachel Alberts (Co-Producer) has been happily directing, producing and writing plays for children for a dozen years. Rachel also teaches drama in the Alexandria public schools and is a founder, writer and director for LTA’s PET (Partnership in Educational Theater) Project, a community outreach program that performs literature-based programs for local schools using LTA actors. She is a two-time recipient of LTA’s Award for Excellence in Producing and serves on LTA’s Board as the Governor of Education.

Jamie Blake (Co-Wardrobe) is thrilled to be working with Frank, Bobbie, Rachel and this fabulous cast and crew. Jamie has spent the past 30 years at LTA and loves every minute of it. She’s been on and off the LTA Board of Governors, has won Best Producer twice and long, long ago won the Best New Member award. Special thanks to her mom and sister Liz for keeping her balanced. This is for Beamer and Rocco—Jamie’s four-legged loves.

Eileen Doherty (Co-Assistant Stage Manager) is excited to be working again with Bobbie, Rachel, Frank and the TGA team—as usual, backstage or in the booth. Thanks to Kerry for getting her involved here in 2003. Hope J. J. (miss you) and Suzanne D. are still smiling down on LTA.

John Downing (Set Design/Set Construction) has designed 40 shows at LTA over the past 25 years. Favorite mystery designs include Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, Sherlock’s Last Case, Murder Among Friends, Something’s Afoot and Sleuth. Many recent designs have been with Bill Glikbarg, with whom John won a WATCH Award for set design of Twentieth Century (LTA) in 2013, and John also won a WATCH Award for construction of Heaven Can Wait (LTA) in 2012. In his spare time, he enjoys model battleships and Eurogaming. He plans a cruise to and from Europe next spring, with time out to visit Paris and Switzerland.

Charles Dragonette (Co-Assistant Stage Manager) is looking forward to the serenity and relaxation of ASM-ing The Game’s Afoot after a hectic season of stage management at LTA and ACCT, acting at LTA and ACCT, and props design at PCP. Back where I started—behind the moving shrubbery!

Margaret Evans-Joyce (Co-Stage Manager) has produced nine productions and stage managed 22 productions at LTA. She served four years as President of LTA and is currently the Board of Governors’ Executive Secretary. She recently received the coveted award for Outstanding Service to LTA and the award for co-producing the outstanding production of Avenue Q. She retired five years ago from the area of special education and is an adjunct professor at Howard University in the area of Speech and Language Pathology. She is extremely excited to be working with Frank again, Bobbie, Rachel and Christine.

Meet the Crew (continued)

Amany Ezeldin (Co-Property Design) is new to LTA and is excited to join the wonderful cast and crew in this production. Her most recent production experience includes properties work with the St. Mark’s Players and the Fat and Greasy Citizens Brigade. Before moving to the D.C. area, Amany was an active member of the Theater of Western Springs in Illinois, where she worked on lighting, makeup/hair and costumes for various productions. She enjoys all aspects of putting on a show, from performing onstage to working behind the scenes.

Christine Farrell (Co-Stage Manager) is pleased to be a member of the production team for The Game’s Afoot. She is excited to be working once again with Frank, Nate, Bobbie and Rachel and looking forward to her first co-SM outing with Margaret Evans-Joyce. Favorite past production team credits include Spamalot, The 39 Steps, 33 Variations, Rabbit Hole and Company with LTA; Assassins, The Lion in Winter, Parade, The Wiz and Bye Bye Birdie with SMP; Urinetown: The Musical and Bent with DS; Godspell with ZVP; and Picasso at the Lapin Agile with 2FT.

Bobbie Herbst (Co-Producer)co-produced LTA’s TheSecret Garden, Christmas Carol, Company, 33 Variations, Rabbit Hole, Sweeney Todd, Ragtime and Spamalot and was assistant producer for Oliver!,Gypsy and Scrooge. Bobbie has designed props and costumes (once!) and works wardrobe and box office. She is a proud and humble recipient of LTA’s Most Outstanding New Member Award, the Outstanding Service to LTA Award, and two co-producing awards for TheSecret Garden and 33 Variations. It is a pleasure and honor to work with Rachel, Frank, Nate, Christine and MEJ and with such an amazing and talented cast and crew, who have all of her admiration and respect. Love and hugs to M, C and E.

Jim Hutzler (Co-Assistant Stage Manager) has worked on many LTA productions in stage management, set construction and painting and is thrilled to be working with this extraordinary team of actors and crew. Special thanks to the producers and the director, and to all who make LTA the magical place that it is.

Mary Hutzler (Set Painting) has enjoyed painting sets at LTA, ACCT and PCP. It is a pleasure to work with the talented and enthusiastic crew and cast of The Game’s Afoot. Being a Sherlock Holmes fan, she found it especially enjoyable to help create the setting for this play. Like a good mystery, sets sometimes evolve in mysterious ways, and this one was no exception. In 2005 and 2012, respectively, her work for It Runs in the Family and Heaven Can Wait won the LTA Pearl Award for Excellence in Set Painting. She was nominated for WATCH Awards for It Runs in the Family, Heaven Can Wait and Move Over, Mrs. Markham. Mary thanks to the LTA cast and crew for including her in this production.

Steve Lada (Stage Combat Choreography) is a founding member of the Noble Blades stage combat troupe. He has performed at the Maryland Renaissance Festival and in the Washington Opera’s productions of Tristan and Isolde and Julius Caesar. Steve’s choreography has been honored with WATCH Awards for Richard III, Veronica’s Room, Romeo and Juliet, The Miracle Worker and Kiss Me, Kate. As always, Steve thanks the love of his life for getting him started on this incredible journey

Matt Liptak (Photographer) received a BFA in photographic illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2011 and works for LivingSocial as a photo editor and in-house photographer. He can be found photographing portraits, events and theater throughout the D.C. area. Liptak is also no stranger to LTA and was last seen on the LTA stage in TheRocky Horror Show as Riff-Raff.

Alexandra Mees (Co-Wardrobe) is new to wardrobe and excited to be given this opportunity. She has had two onstage experiences in high school (Oha, eine Leiche and Shakespeare’s Macbeth), but after working on props for her high school’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Alexandra realized that she enjoys being backstage more than being onstage. Alexandra wants to thank her family and friends for their relentless love and support, and she also wants to thank the wonderful cast and crew of this show for all their dedication and hard work.

MYKE (Set Decoration) has designed and dressed many award-winning sets since becoming an LTA member in 1991. He has also had the honor of serving LTA as President, Vice President and Governor for Production. Past designs include Avenue Q, Hairspray, Company, 1776, Born Yesterday, Driving Miss Daisy and Little Shop of Horrors.

Liz Owens (Co-Lighting Design) has been working with lights at LTA for over 20 years as a designer, master electrician and crew member. She is pleased to once again be working with her mother. When not performing this role, you can find Liz directing, acting, running sound, stage managing and producing, to name a few. Theater is a second home, and that makes it all the sweeter to share it with her mom, Nancy.

Nancy Owens (Co-Lighting Design) has been designing lights for various theaters for many years. She has designed lights at ACCT, LTA, PCP and CRT and for the annual NVTA Festival. When not designing lights, you can find her working as master electrician, running lights, running sound, stage managing and producing. Nancy is also the chairman of the LTA One-Act Competition each year. She won the LTA Lighting Design Award for The Underpants. Nancy’s daughter, Liz, first got her started running lights and sound many years ago, and payback is still ongoing. Thank you, Liz!

Frank Pasqualino (Director) is very excited to be back directing at LTA! Frank is very active directing and working with various theater groups in the D.C. area, most recently having directed Over the River and Through the Woods for Prince George’s Little Theatre. Frank also enjoys directing children’s theater, having directed numerous shows for Encore Stage and Studio and Mount Vernon Community Children’s Theatre. In 2007, he directed the Washington area premiere of Intimate Apparel for LTA, which won the Ruby Griffith Award for Outstanding Achievement in a Play and for which he also received a WATCH nomination for Best Director. Frank was last seen onstage in Port City Playhouse’s production of Black Hole. Frank wishes to thank his family, especially his wife, Donna, for all her love, support and encouragement; Bruce, I know you are watching, too.

Meet the Crew (continued)

Nick Roy (Master Electrician) only recently started working with LTA on the productions of The Rocky Horror Show, A Streetcar Named Desire and A Christmas Carol after a hiatus from theatre. He is happy to get the experience of working as an ME for the first time with such a supportive crew and cast. An amateur musician in high school and college, Nick played trumpet and French horn, and is now teaching himself piano, guitar and kantele (a Finnish lap harp). Special thanks to Nancy and Liz Owens and to Micheal O’Connor.

Jean Schlicting and Kit Sibley (Co-Costume Design) are delighted to work again with Frank and this talented cast and crew. As a team, they have costumed a number of LTA shows, most recently The Rocky Horror Show and Ragtime (LTA Award). Other recent favorites include Hairspray (WATCH Award), The Full Monty (LTA Award), Sweeney Todd, Gross Indecency (WATCH nominee), Move Over, Mrs. Markham (WATCH nominee) and Heaven Can Wait (WATCH nominee). They also work with other community theater groups and educational programs in the D.C. area.

Rebecca Sheehy (Co-Props Design) joined as an official LTA member/volunteer during the 2013-14 season but has been a member of the audience with her aunt, Betty Dolan, and parents since Victor/Victoria in the 2002-03 season. She was co-props designer for Plaza Suite and Spamalot. She is thrilled to be working with Amany Ezeldin on The Game’s Afoot. Rebecca wants to thank everyone at LTA for being so supportive and friendly—from the cast and crew members to producers, directors, the box office staff and volunteers. Enjoy the show!

Art Snow (Special Effects) is pleased to be working with the crew and cast of The Game’s Afoot and particularly with Frank Pasqualino–it has been a while since Love, Sex and the IRS. Inspired by charming Margaret, he has previously enjoyed designing challenging effects that creep, gallop, float, fly, fall, foam, burn, bleed, shatter, kick, smoke, undulate and unravel, and the challenges of this show are nicely extraordinary.

Matt Stover (Co-Assistant Stage Manager) is enjoying his second time as Assistant Stage Manager for planet Earth and LTA. Matt likes being backstage wearing all black. It reminds him of the days when he was a ninja. His top qualities are being tall, quick and Hispanic— all of which he achieved because of Joe Quinn. Enjoy the show! Frank P. is awesome, and I’m happy to be working with him again.

Nathan Tatro (Assistant Director) is glad to be back at LTA, this time working behind the scenes. Nate has performed in numerous productions in the D.C. area, including three at LTA. He has taught and directed at MVCCT’s summer camp and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gaithersburg. Nate holds a B.A. in psychology from Lycoming College and an M.A. in psychology from George Mason University. By day, he works for the American Psychological Association. He is especially grateful to Frank for giving him the opportunity to be a part of this very talented production team.

14

Dominique Thompson (Hair/Wigs/Makeup) is a five-year employee of Alexandria City Public Schools, but his hair and makeup background dates back to when he was a student at Alexandria’s T.C. Williams High School. Dominique attended college in Richmond but returned home in an effort to give back to his community. He wants to again thank Robin Havens-Parker and Kevin Lane for showing him the “LTA way” and Rachel for providing him yet another fun and challenging activity. Enjoy the show!

Alan Wray (Sound Design) is excited to have the opportunity work with Frank. Alan was responsible for designs for The 39 Steps, 33 Variations, Ragtime, [title of show],Picnic and various other productions. He has been the recipient of several LTA Excellence in Sound Design Awards, including one for 33 Variations. He also works with other area theaters, and recently designed sound for Port City Playhouse’s world premiere of Jean Koppen’s Black Hole. Alan also designed sound for Port City Playhouse’s The Drawer Boy, The Dixie Swim Club, An American Daughter, Our Town and the chilling Terra Nova. He has been nominated twice for a WATCH Award, for LTA’s Picnic and TAP’s The Seagull.

Russell Wyland (Rigging) has been a member of LTA for 24 years and has served the theater in several capacities, such as Chairman of the Sound Department, head of the Selection Committee and three years as President. Russ is serving his fourth term as the Governor of Production. His last two producing projects were Spamalot and 33 Variations (2013 LTA Award winner for Production of the Year). In the meantime, he will continue hanging curtains (rigging), as he has for every show for at least the past decade.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a support group of interested and dedicated people who support the theatre with special contributions. Additionally, the Council has three social events per year, provides for the winter holiday decorations for the theatre, and maintains the Council Memorial Garden. The Council was organized in 1961 and presently has about 80 members, most of whom are long-term and wellestablished LTA members. Past contributions include: a new range for the Council Green Room of LTA, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for the new theatre seats, new draperies in the Council Room, the computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $200,000 and we gratefully accept donations from friends and members to assist in our support of LTA. We welcome new members and if you would like to become a member of the Council please feel free to contact the theatre or any of the Council officers. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and are proud to be supporting one of the best community theatres in America today.
