The Odd Couple The Female Version
presents
written by Neil Simon directed by Joanna Henry produced by Alan Wray and Eddie Page
LTA presents Neil Simon’s comedy classic with a twist! Unger and Madison are at it again — Florence Unger and Olive Madison, that is — in Neil Simon’s hilarious contemporary comic classic. Come watch this time-honored comedy reinvented from a different perspective as the ladies take over the juicy roles of the famously mismatched couple to give this well-known play a whole new life. Watch and laugh as this “odd couple” learn that friendship may have its ups and downs but in the end it overpowers all.

Director’s Notes
God of Carnage follows in the literary traditions of black comedy and farce. This biting, funny, and very disturbing piece takes it one step further by bringing in a touch of satire as well. It looks at the classic theme of handling conflict with civility and explores how close we are to absolute rude barbarism in our social interactions as manners and decency disappear when we aren’t getting what we want.
Two sets of parents, Alan and Annette Raleigh and Michael and Veronica Novak, meet to discuss and work out a resolution when their sons, Benjamin and Henry, respectively, get into a fight. What happens next is that we find out that the parents are worse than the kids in dealing with each other. There’s a psychological darkness for each of the four characters that is partnered with humor brilliantly exposed in the words, seen in off-theline reactions and in physical comedy. Think of this play as a smash-up of a comedy of manners a la Oscar Wilde or A.R. Gurney, with a marriage between Lord of the Flies and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? It should make you laugh and then wince…or wince and then laugh.
One of the underlying ways this brutality is shown is the theme of bullying. Benjamin bullies Henry, and that is the underlying story: for the two sets of parents to get together to figure out what to do. The symptoms of bullying appear as the story unfolds, and we can see that Annette, Veronica, Michael and Alan are either bullies or bullied, and usually a psychological mix of both. Michael acts and bullies a hamster. Alan demeans and bullies his wife, Annette, and tries to do so to Veronica, too, who swings back. Veronica, the most verbal of all the characters, uses her words to corner her fellow parents—bullying by words. Michael, frustrated and strangely embarrassed by his son being bullied, tries to keep the civility as his mien, but he is unknowingly revealing when he hyperbolically claims to being a Neanderthal and proudly discloses that he led a gang. Taking this theme and weaving it in this piece, French playwright Yasmina Reza gives voice to this social issue and takes it to the next step: This is what bullies look like when they grow up, and this is how bullies are made. This is just one theme, among so many others, touched upon in God of Carnage.
Ultimately, the play skewers the humanistic sensibility of the power of civility, daring us to look at how a brutish dark side to our human nature so easily shows up when we enter a conflict. It also gives us a bit of distance to be able to laugh at these couples safely. I’m grateful for the opportunity to present this play at the Little Theatre of Alexandria with Allison, Chuck, Jack, and Karen—mature actors at their best—all of whom lace the piece with skilled drama and comedy. Hats off, also, to the superb team of technical designers, who have created a suggestive and real environment for a disturbingly good fight.

Meet the Cast
(in alphabetical order)
Allison Block (Annette Raleigh) was last seen at LTA in The Cocoanuts and is overjoyed to be back onstage in Alexandria with such a gifted cast and production team. Other credits include Ragtime (TAP), Thoroughly Modern Millie (TAP), Victor/Victoria (RMT), A Chorus Line (RCP and TAP), The Sound of Music (RMT) and West Side Story (RMT). Chris, you know I will always be grateful for so much more than this experience, and it is truly the icing on an already yummy cake! Terri, I love you. Nans, M&D, I love you. This is for Steven, Louise and Josephine.
Chuck Dluhy (Michael Novak) is happy to be back at LTA after a long hiatus. He was last seen on this stage tap dancing with washtubs on his feet in 1997’s Crazy for You. More recently, he’s worked with RCP, MCP, TAP, ESP and KAT in many of his favorite roles, such as Ricky Roman in Glengarry Glen Ross, Lenny Ganz in Rumors, Chris Keller in All My Sons, Uncle Fester in The Addams Family, Thenardier in Les Miserables, Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast, Paul in A Chorus Line and Roger de Bris in The Producers. Thanks to Chris, Terri, Allison, Karen and Jack for making this a joyous experience. Thanks to Mom and Dad and all my friends for their unending support.
Karen Shotts (Veronica Novak) was last seen at LTA as Becca in Rabbit Hole. Other recent roles include Diane in The Little Dog Laughed (Dominion) and Lane in The Clean House (Elden Street). She has appeared in more than 40 productions, with favorite roles including Hedda in Hedda Gabler (Best Actress, WATCH Award), the Witch in Into the Woods (LTA), Sally in Cabaret (Best Actress, VA ACT Award), Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker (Best Actress, WATCH Award). Very special thanks to my Bill for believing in me.
Jack B. Stein (Alan Raleigh) has been involved in D.C. area community theater for the past 20 years and is honored to be performing at LTA again after appearing in last season’s Plaza Suite. Other favorite shows include Laughter on the 23rd Floor; The Full Monty; The Producers; Follies; Guys and Dolls; Kiss Me, Kate (WATCH nomination); Steel Pier; A Funny Thing…, and Love! Valour! Compassion! Thanks to Chris for his trust and guidance as well as a wonderful set of cast mates, production team, and crew. And always to Peter for letting Jack indulge in this pastime (and Pounce for his eternal good cheer).
For your own safety, look for your nearest EXIT. In case of emergency, WALK, DO NOT run, to the exit. We regret that no sound recording or photographic equipment may be operated during the performance.
Another great way to help LTA continue to be a vibrant part of our community is by having your organization host one of our Partners in Art Nights. Partners buy out the house for designated performances (at a discounted rate) and give away tickets to members or sell them as a fundraising opportunity. Partners may use our lovely Council Green Room (at the left of the lobby when you enter the theatre) for a pre-show reception. Shows are available for our 2015-2016 season at reasonable rates.

Meet the Crew
Jeffrey Scott Auerbach (Lighting Designer) is very pleased to be returning to the LTA stage. He enjoys working at LTA and especially with this production cast and crew. His last show with LTA was Boeing, Boeing. He received two WATCH nominations in 2013 for Life With Father (ACCT) and Next to Normal (MC). Jeff has a BFA in theater tech and design with an emphasis in lighting from George Mason University. While attending GMU, he received a nomination from the American College Theater Festival for his work on The Bacchae. He has a show opening shortly at ACCT called Pride and Prejudice that he hopes you can get a chance to see. Jeff sends his love and thanks to his family, David and Katie, for their support in all of his theater endeavors. Now, sit back and relax and enjoy this wild show, God of Carnage.
Keith Bell (Sound Designer) has been designing sound for professional and community theater groups in the metro area for the past 15 years. This is his 11th design for director Christopher Dykton and his seventh for LTA, including the Ruby Griffith Award-winning The Cocoanuts, directed by Chris Dykton. Recent designs include The Wedding Singer, Nine to Five and the WATCH Award-winning A Little Night Music (TAP).
Susan Boyd (Costume/Hair and Makeup Designer) is Wigs and Makeup Chair at LTA, where she recently did hair and makeup for TheRocky Horror Show. Other costume and/or hair/makeup designs include Witness for the Prosecution, Woman in Black, Dial ‘M’ for Murder, The 39 Steps and Boeing, Boeing (all at LTA); The Importance of Being Earnest, It’s a Wonderful Life: The Radio Play, Frost/Nixon, Social Security, Rumors, Perfect Wedding and The Game’s Afoot (all at MCP); This (VTC); and The Dixie Swim Club (PCP). In her day job, Susan is a wardrobe stylist and image consultant.
Terri Carnahan (Stage Manager) is delighted to return to LTA to work on God of Carnage. Terri has been stage managing for over 20 years in the D.C. area, where she has worked with many community theaters. Terri is thrilled to be working with Chris, Sharon, Rance and the amazing designers on this show. Finally, thanks to the cast for all their hard work to make such a great show.
Jean Coyle (Assistant to the Producers) made her LTA “debut” as a volunteer speller in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and served as assistant to the stage manager for A Christmas Carol (2012), assisted on props for Proof, assisted on wardrobe for 33 Variations, Ragtime, Plaza Suite and A Streetcar Named Desire and was co-chief of wardrobe with her wonderful and kind mentor, Margaret Snow, for A Christmas Carol (2014). She has been an LTA member since 2010, serving regularly as house manager and in the “will call” window. She is now playbill coordinator for LTA. Jean is thrilled to be apprenticing to the God of Carnage producers, Rance Willis and Sharon Field, and honored to be working with them and with director Chris Dykton and the rest of the cast and crew. She is very appreciative of her Shih Tzu, Priscilla, being willing to be home alone during Jean’s many nights and weekends at LTA.
Meet the Crew (continued)
Susan Driscoll (Co-Set Decorator) operates a local furniture consignment and home staging business and always has great furnishings and props to work with. Only recently did she become involved in set dressing opportunities in Life With Father and Murder on the Nile, both directed by Roland Gomez at ACCT. She was nominated for a WATCH Award for Life With Father. Her 2014 projects included set dressing for Anne of Green Gables and her first involvement with LTA, A Christmas Carol.
Christopher Dykton (Director) returns to LTA after 13 years, having last staged its WATCH and Ruby Griffith Award-winning production of The Cocoanuts in 2002. Local directing and choreography credits include On the Town (Ruby Griffith Award), The Secret Garden (ACT Award), The Women (Ruby Griffith Award), Damn Yankees (ACT nomination), Steel Pier (WATCH nomination), Master Class (Ruby Griffith Award), A Man for All Seasons, Follies (WATCH nomination), The Producers (WATCH nomination), A Little Night Music (WATCH Award) all at TAP; A Chorus Line (WATCH Award) at RCP; Nunsense (ACT nomination) at DS; 1776 (Ruby Griffith Award) at LTA; and Love! Valour! Compassion! (WATCH nomination) at ESP. He salutes the cast and designers of God of Carnage for their incredible work. Next season, Christopher will direct and choreograph LTA’s Grey Gardens.
Sharon Field (Co-Producer) has co-produced for LTA since 2006, and God of Carnage is her eighth show at LTA. Sharon is once again sharing producing duties with Rance Willis and for the first time with Jean Coyle. She is thrilled to be working with our amazing cast, very talented creative team and absolute best theater crew around. Sharon’s next role will be as grandma “Mimi” to her first grandchild this coming May.
Barbara Helsing (Co-Wardrobe) is so happy to be involved with the show and with her friends Rance and Sharon and for the first time with director Christopher Dykton. As always, she loves working with her buddy Margaret Snow. After the first read-through of this play, she knew it would be great. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
Jim Hutzler (Set Construction) has worked on numerous shows at LTA in set construction, painting and stage management and was co-master carpenter on Spamalot last summer under the direction of set designer Grant Kevin Lane, whom he is thrilled to be working with again. Thanks to all who make LTA the magic place that it is.
Mary Hutzler (Set Painting) has enjoyed painting sets at LTA, ACCT and PCP. It is a pleasure to work with the talented and enthusiastic crew and cast of God of Carnage. As she imagined a set that is, in part, an actress-actor in the play and one that reflects the action/story line, it became apparent that she could not resist working on this set. In 2005 and 2012, her work on It Runs in the Family and Heaven Can Wait, respectively, won the LTA Pearl Award for Excellence in Set Painting. She was nominated for WATCH Awards for It Runs in the Family; Move Over, Mrs. Markham; and Heaven Can Wait. Mary thanks the LTA cast and crew for including her in this production.
Meet the Crew (continued)
Grant Kevin Lane (Set Design) has designed sets and/or costumes for over 50 productions in the Washington area. His most recent project for LTA was set and costume design for Spamalot. With director Chris Dykton he costumed Follies, Love! Valour! Compassion!, Ragtime, The Cocoanuts and Saturday Night. He also designed the sets for The Cocoanuts, Master Class and Saturday Night. He would like to applaud and thank all of the designers, artists, carpenters, actors and production staff members for God of Carnage. Cheers to you, Chris!
Jennifer Lyman (Master Electrician) has been active in community theater in Northern Virginia for nearly 20 years and has done a little of everything. She started out on light crews and soon added light designer, producer and director to her résumé. If you are an avid theater person, you may have seen her onstage in The Will Rogers Follies at DSor Footloose here at LTA. Jennifer has produced 14 plays, including LTA’s Plaza Suite, Intimate Apparel and Hot L Baltimore. She directed A Christmas Carol for LTA, The Drawer Boy for PCP and Bug for DS. Later this season, she will direct LTA’s Dirty Blonde.
C.J. Mikowski (Co-Set Decorator) is always sourcing and procuring stage pieces with a keen eye for detail. C.J. has been working with props and set dressing since 2012 with her involvement in a unique production of Romeo and Juliet directed by Heather Sanderson at ACCT. C.J.’s work includes set dressing for Life With Father, Murder on the Nile and LTA’s A Christmas Carol.
Leslie Reed (Property Design) was enchanted by LTA’s warmth and creative genius the first time she was asked to help with the props of Blithe Spirit. A magical door had opened to reveal the world of make-believe fabricated from hard work, imagination, superb talent and a super-abundance of cooperation and organization. Gathering props, painting sets, calling volunteers, researching details, cleaning, sweeping and sewing are all building blocks of a production. Being able to do it in the LTA community has truly been a gift.

Art Snow (Special Effects) is pleased to be working with the director, producers, crew and cast of God of Carnage. The special effect in this show is a new challenge quite different from those of previous shows. Its unique fluidity could spill over into the baseball stands if charming Margaret gets carried away in cheering for Baltimore’s Oily Boids in Nationals Park.
Margaret Snow (Co-Wardrobe) likes managing a challenging wardrobe operation, and God of Carnage fills the bill nicely with its problem-solving plot progressing from intelligent reservation to messy irrationality. Working with this show’s theme, cast and crew is perfect preparation for exercising appropriate spectator behavior in the aftermath of attempting to cheer her sanctified Baltimore Orioles to victory in Nationals Park this year.
Keith Waters (Photographer) is photographing his fifth production at LTA. He has been an event and lifestyle photographer since 2010, and his images have been published in national magazines and newspapers. Keith is also an actor who has appeared in network television productions and major motion pictures as well as on several area stages, including LTA.
Meet the Crew (continued)
Rance Willis (Co-Producer) co-produced Ragtime with Sharon Field and Bobbie Herbst during the 2013-14 LTA season. In 2012, he co-produced with Sharon Field LTA’s late night show, Woman in Black. In 2010, it was Company; in 2009, Gypsy; in 2008, 1776; and in 2007, The Philadelphia Story. He is one of the LTA Financial Trustees and serves on the Budget Committee.
Russell Wyland (Rigging) has been a member of LTA for 24 years and has served the theater in several capacities, including chairman of the Sound Department, head of the Selection Committee and three years as President. Russ is serving his third term as Governor for Production. He is the chair and only member of the LTA rigging department, a position he has held for over 15 years.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a support group of interested and dedicated people who support the theatre with special contributions. Additionally, the Council has three social events per year, provides for the winter holiday decorations for the theatre, and maintains the Council Memorial Garden. The Council was organized in 1961 and presently has about 80 members, most of whom are long-term and wellestablished LTA members. Past contributions include: a new range for the Council Green Room of LTA, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for the new theatre seats, new draperies in the Council Room, the computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $200,000 and we gratefully accept donations from friends and members to assist in our support of LTA. We welcome new members and if you would like to become a member of the Council please feel free to contact the theatre or any of the Council officers. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and are proud to be supporting one of the best community theatres in America today.
