Lettice and Lovage is funny and wacky with a sneaky heart. This is no surprise when you realize that the part of Lettice was written for Maggie Smith. But these qualities were secondary to why I was attracted to the show. The theme of the stories we tell, both of ourselves and our history, really resonated with me. In my day job, I work for the Office of Historic Alexandria, telling stories from history across our different museums. While thankfully we have more interesting stories than Fustian House, I know the struggle of telling interesting but true histories while managing the expectations of guests. The stories we tell about our past directly impact our present, and future. And this play really gets at the heart of this, as well as the importance of preserving the past.
The other fantastic element of this play is Lotte and Lettice’s relationship. This is a play that focuses on two women without a man in the middle, which is rare. They are also fascinating people who see the deficiencies in their own lives in each other’s strengths. On the surface they are the most unlikely of friends. But the growth of their relationship gets at an element of how people connect in real life.
Enjoy our trip to the intersection of theatre, history and the lives of two very interesting women!

LTA will continue to follow all current health and safety standards set by governmental authorities while the COVID pandemic continues, and we will maintain our full participation in the ALX Promise program sponsored by the Alexandria Health Department and Visit Alexandria. Starting September 1, 2022, LTA will no longer require proof of COVID vaccination or PCR testing (if not vaccinated), for audience admission to our facility, and we will no longer be holding out every third seat for social distancing. However, we will still be requiring wearing a mask indoors, including during a performance. Proof of full vaccination, including boosters, against COVID is required for all cast, crew, volunteers and staff, and for those auditioning at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. This may, hopefully, change later in the season.

Nicole “Nicki” Gray (Woman with Baby/Various Visitors) is ecstatic to make her LTA debut after many years as an LTA patron, fan and camp counselor. She fell in love with theatre as a child with MVCCT, was student president of the performing arts as a high schooler at SSSAS, and supplemented degrees in health policy (B.S.) and biodefense (M.S.) with theatre and dance during her years at Georgetown University. Nicki currently works as a substitute teacher and swim coach and volunteers as a firefighter/EMT while applying to medical school. She thanks the LTA community for its warm welcome!
Rachael Hubbard (Lotte Schoen) is delighted to return to LTA, having last appeared here as Veta May in Harvey. Other favorite roles include Amanda, Private Lives (RCP); Belinda Blair, Noises Off (LTA); Meg, Leading Ladies (LTA); and Rosemary Mortimore, It Runs in the Family (LTA). Much love and thanks to her husband, Mark; her daughter, Georgianna; and her pack of King Charles Cavaliers (Mr. Darcy, London, Patches, Oatsie and Poppy).
Nicole Lamberson (Women Visitors) is excited to make her LTA debut in Lettice and Lovage. She most recently appeared as Eve in A Night of One Acts’ Guinea Pig Apocalypse (TAP) and has been active in theater for more than 30 years, since she was a 5-year-old munchkin in The Wizard of Oz (Richmond Civic Theatre in Indiana). She thanks her parents and fiancé for their love and support.

Hilary Adams (Dialect Coach) is thrilled to make her first credit of 2023 this production of Lettice and Lovage. She is so grateful to Juli Tarabek Blacker for believing in her capabilities as an English dialect coach (all those years of watching Acorn Antiques, Absolutely Fabulous and Sherlock were worth it!) and to this phenomenal cast for making this undertaking a true labor of love. You can catch Hilary next co-producing Mary Stuart, which opens in April. Enjoy the show!
Kirstin Apker (Set Decoration) has filled numerous backstage roles at LTA, including props designer (Rumors, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, The Producers WATCH Award, The Nance — LTA Award, Legally Blonde, Key for Two, Laughing Stock), set decorator (Design for Murder, Legally Blonde, Steel Magnolias — WATCH Award), assistant stage manager (Something Rotten!, A Party to Murder, Plaza Suite, Sweeney Todd) and artistic painter (Heaven Can Wait). She has also appeared onstage in To Kill a Mockingbird as Miss Stephanie. Love always to Tom and her four sweet kiddos for their support of Mommy’s avocation!
Juli Tarabek Blacker (Director) is thrilled to return to another show at LTA! Her last show here, Moonlight and Magnolias, closed early in March 2020 along with the rest of the world. Other directing credits include Hamlet (PCP), Guinea Pig Apocalypse (TAP/LTA One Acts 2022), Just Relative (LTA One Acts) and Express (SSS). Many thanks to the cast and crew for helping to bring this show to life. Extra thanks to James, who was willing to come play this time.
Julie Fischer (Set Design) is honored to work with Juli and the production crew of Lettice and Lovage. Her work was last seen in the previous show, Sister Act. She has worked on LTA sets as designer, master carpenter and set construction crew. Julie appreciates working with all the volunteers who give their time and talents to this wonderful community.
Alexandria Convention & Visitors Association invites you to visit www.artseventsalexandria.com to view the arts calendar and schedule of events.
Allison Gray-Mendes (Properties Design/Technical Director) enjoys working on the “dark side” of theatre as a designer, technical director and producer, including several upcoming projects with LTA and TAP this spring. She was previously WATCH nominated for The Hunchback of Notre Dame (TAP). She would like to thank Hilary and Griffin for being amazing to work with again...and again..., her mother and Mercedes for always being creative collaborators, and finally, her husband, fellow thespian Mark, for always encouraging her to push herself. Enjoy the show!
Kira Hogan (Co-Stage Manager) is excited to be back at LTA for her first show since pre-pandemic and is delighted to be working with this incredibly talented cast and crew. She has stage managed numerous shows at LTA and other local theaters, most recently The Savannah Disputation. When not stage managing, Kira can usually be found backstage designing props or running lights or sound. She is currently the Chairman of LTA’s Awards Steering Committee, Adjudication Coordinator for the WATCH Awards program and a Girl Scout leader for her daughter’s troop. Special thanks to her husband, Patrick, and her daughter, Riley, for their patience and unwavering support.
JK Lighting Design (Lighting Design) Jeffrey Scott Auerbach and Kimberly Crago of JK Lighting Design are an award-winning light design duo. They are active at ACCT, DS, TAP, LTA and other local theatres. Jeff and Kimberly are pleased to again be working with Juli. Their last collaboration with Juli was Moonlight and Magnolias here at LTA. They would like to thank the producers, Juli and the talented cast and crew. Jeff would like to thank David and Katie Clement for their love and support. Kimberly would like to thank Steve for being a real swell guy. Please enjoy the show.
Ramah Johnson (Co-Stage Manager) is back for another round at LTA after stage managing Newsies (TAP). She has previously stage managed for Bright Star (LTA) and The Drowsy Chaperone (SMP) and assisted on Prelude to a Kiss (LTA). Ramah would like to thank her partner, David, and daughters, Kendall and Casey, for their enthusiasm watching rehearsal videos and all the love and support!
Janet Kennelly (Assistant Set Painter) started volunteering for regional community theatre in 2016 with MCP as a set painter. In 2017, she transferred to LTA, where she has worked with both props and set painting. Among the plays she has worked on are Driving Miss Daisy, A Christmas Carol, Jesus Christ Superstar, Dracula, Rumors and others.
Chanel Lancaster (Hair and Makeup Design) last designed hair for LTA’s Bright Star. She also did hair and makeup for Wait Until Dark (LTA), The Bluest Eye (DS) and The Revolutionists (LTA). Chanel would like to thank the Lettice and Lovage cast and crew for this wonderful opportunity. Thanks most of all to her husband, Austin, for all his love and support.
Joan Lawrence (Costume Design) is thrilled to be working with Juli again, having costumed Guinea Pig Apocalypse in LTA and TAP’s 2022 Evening of One Acts. She has designed costumes for many community theaters and schools in the DC area. Among her favorites are A Streetcar Named Desire, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (WATCH nomination), She Loves Me, Beauty and the Beast (TAP), Blue Stockings (LTA), A Little Night Music (RCP), Love in Ruins (Capital Fringe), The Sound of Music, My Emperor’s New Clothes (St. Andrew’s Players), and The Children’s Hour (Maret School).
Manuel Medina (Sound Design) has been an active musician and sound designer for more than 10 years. He earned a B.A. in music technology from George Mason University and has worked on four shorts as a filmscore composer, audio editor, music producer and sound engineer for independent artists in the DMV area. Also, Manuel is the leader of instrumental contemporary jazz fusion projects that had been featured in the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage. Manuel is excited for his first show at LTA.
Dan Remmers (Master Carpenter) is glad to be back working in his home theater, with his last LTA production being The Producers in 2019. His most recent sets were Twigs and Bone (Nu Sass) and Proof (Peter’s Alley).
sheri ratick stroud (Co-Producer) is excited to be back at LTA after a 40-year hiatus. At that time, she was seen onstage in the play Auntie Mame. Sheri has a degree in theatre and has acted, directed and produced around the DMV. Her show Agnes of God (DS) won Best Production and Best Director from ACT. Her film production company, Wonder Pictures, was formed in 2010 and has garnered numerous awards at film festivals. But theatre is her passion, and she is beyond thrilled to be back at LTA.
Griffin Voltmann (Co-Producer) is thrilled to make his debut producing a mainstage show for LTA. He would like to thank the cast and crew for all their hard work enlarging, enlivening and enlightening, and his wife, Hilary, for her unfailing love and support.
Mona Wargo (Set Painting) is a multiple award-winning crew chief, having won awards from both LTA and WATCH. She has been painting theater sets since 1998. Mona has painted for four theaters in the DMV, including DS, FP (now CCDC) and ACCT, as well as LTA. She continues to paint sets, lead and mentor crew, and teach painting classes.
Robin Worthington (Wardrobe Coordinator) has loved providing wardrobe services in collaboration with costumers to many LTA and some ACCT productions during the past 16 years. She couldn’t have had so much fun without her wonderful crew of volunteer dressers, who have shared the joy of helping actors change costumes when they transform into alter egos backstage, frequently several times within a play. She is thankful for her family members who care for her stage-orphan pets at home and understand her passion for playing behind the scenes in plays. Look out, Lettice and Lovage, here we go!
Russell M. Wyland (Rigging) has been an LTA member and volunteer for more than 30 years. During that time, he has worked in several capacities, including seven years as President and eight years as Governor for Production; he has also produced over 25 shows. However, his first love is rigging, the art of masking the stage with drapes and making things fly from above and travel across the stage.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a group of dedicated members who support financial projects for the theatre and provide numerous social events with dinners, receptions, and other member gatherings. The Council promotes and supports volunteerism throughout the theatre to ensure continued success in all areas, i.e., backstage, front of house, box office, etc.; we also provide need-based scholarship funding to support numerous adult and youth educational programs within the theatre. The Council is proud to sponsor the Shakespeare Garden which has become a community favorite with many stopping in just to relax and “waste my time in it.”
