This Tony Award nominated musical, created by comedy legend Steve Martin and Grammy winner Edie Brickell, is a sweeping tale of love and redemption set in the American South during the 1920’s and 1940’s. This emotional story weaves two chapters in the life of literary editor Alice Murphy and an ambitious young soldier just home from World War II. Their connection helps discover a stunning secret with the power to transform their lives. This original and hopeful musical, based on a true story, is propelled by a rousing country and bluegrass score. Director’s Notes
Wait Until Dark is a classic thriller from 1966 that was adapted into an Audrey Hepburn film only a year later. Frederick Knott’s play begins by introducing three con men—Roat, Mike and Carlino—who are in search of a doll containing illegal drugs. They set a trap for Susy, the heroine, whom we do not meet until the very end of the first scene. It turns out that a year earlier, Susy lost her sight in an accident, and just six months later, she married Sam, a photographer.
This play was originally chosen by LTA in the summer of 2019, slated for production in fall 2020. As I read through it, Wait Until Dark struck me as a play about a familiar world turned sinister. Unlike the rest of New York City, the apartment that Susy shares with Sam has been mapped in her mind so that she navigates it with confidence most of the time, even though Gloria, the young girl upstairs, does her best to irritate Susy by moving the furniture around. But as the three con men invade the space in Sam’s absence and attempt to manipulate Susy, her apartment becomes an unsafe and unpredictable place to be.
Now, in 2021, the feeling of being trapped in one’s own home, and the sense of disorientation at a constantly changing situation, is a recognizable one for all of us, regardless of our different abilities, genders or life circumstances. Loss, change and the need to adapt to them are basic aspects of life, but the pandemic, as with other major moments in history, has brought out new shadings in these human vulnerabilities.
Susy’s assumptions about her life have been shaken by her “new normal,” and she has had to adjust in a world that had fewer resources than today’s for people with disabilities. Also, she struggles with how to strike a balance between being independent and needing help from others, a source of tension in her relationships with Sam and Gloria. Over the course of the play, as her certainties about Sam are also shaken and her doubts about the three con men surface, Susy must again adjust—and very quickly.
2
Ultimately, in many thrillers, a lone woman triumphs over obstacles to outsmart and outfight her adversaries by using resources she didn’t know she had. Will Susy’s perceptiveness and determination help her survive against long odds? Will she do it alone, or with others to help her? What will she use to turn the tables as night falls?
Heather Benjamin Director
SHOW SYNOPSIS
Wait Until Dark is classic late ’60s thriller that follows the heroine, Susy Hendrix, through a suspenseful game of cat and mouse. Susy, who recently became blind, unwittingly possesses a doll filled with illicit drugs that is being sought by a sinister group of con men who have traced it to the Greenwich Village apartment that Susy shares with her husband. When she discovers the true nature of her situation, she and the young girl upstairs launch a daring counterplot against the thieves.

Adam R. Adkins (Roat) is excited for his LTA debut. Recently he played Wayne Hopkins in the DC premiere of Puffs with LTC and afterward with Wolf Pack Theatre. Favorite credits include Gary Stator in R.U.X. for Capital Fringe Festival (winner of Audience Award for Best Comedy) and Jonathan in The Margins (Molotov Theatre Group). He’s also been onscreen in several award-winning shorts with SHRUG Productions, such as How to Meet a Girl. Visit www.adamradkins.com for more information on his upcoming projects.
Brendan Chaney (Sgt. Carlino) was a competitive speech and national-level debater in high school and found a natural outlet in theatre during college, where he earned an acting scholarship. There, he tackled a diverse series of roles, from Uncle Peck in How I Learned to Drive to Robert in Proof. After graduating, he starred in An Unnecessary Farce (MCP), Taking Sides (PCP) and A Fox on the Fairway (LTA). During COVID, he has gone crazy and is more than thrilled to be “Back on the Boards!” Cheers.
Bill Gery (Policeman) is excited to make his debut with LTA.
Mel Gumina (Susy Hendrix) is thrilled to be making her LTA debut! Though a lifelong performer, Mel began performing in the Northern Virginia area in fall 2019 with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (TAP). Other recent roles include Janet van de Graaff in The Drowsy Chaperone (SMP), Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (CFTC) and Sarah Prentice in A Daughter’s a Daughter (TAP). She currently serves as TAP’s Director of Membership. Much love to my family for their constant love and support!

Brendan Quinn (Mike Talman) is thrilled to be back on the LTA stage, where you may have seen him in A Few Good Men (Daniel Kaffee), Dracula (Harker), Harvey (Wilson), Legally Blonde (Warner), A Christmas Carol 2016 (Fred) or The Odd Couple (Female Version) (Jesus). He previously served on the LTA Board and also works backstage, winning LTA’s 2017 award for Best Properties Design for Steel Magnolias. In 2020, he co-produced StopKiss for LTA’s “Small Theatre for Unusual Times” series and worked with Script Addicts to produce Shakespearean readings.
Julia Stimson (Gloria) is thrilled to return to the LTA stage in the role of Gloria in Wait Until Dark. She made her acting debut as Fan Scrooge in LTA’s 2019 production of A Christmas Carol. When she isn’t honing her acting skills, Julia likes to entertain her cat, Pepper, and do tap lessons. She also loves a good, creepy Halloween story and recommends the tales of Edgar Allan Poe.
Juliet Strom (Gloria) is thrilled to be making her LTA debut in Wait Until Dark. Favorite shows include James and the Giant Peach (TAT) and Meet Me in St. Louis (Woodson High School). Additionally, Juliet has trained with Imagination Stage, Acting for Young People, and Interlochen Arts Camp. Michael Townsend (Policeman) is ecstatic to be making his debut at LTA in Wait Until Dark . He acquired much of his theatrical experience while in college at the University of Mary Washington, both on the main stage and in the student-run black box. Some of his favorite roles have included Paul Bratter in Barefoot in the Park (Waterworks Players) and Tim in Noises Off, as well as roles in Lysistrata, Sunday in the Park with George and Macbeth (UMW).

Nick Friedlander (Co-Stage Manager) is titillated to be working on another LTA thriller! He would like to thank Lauren Markovich for being his prettier, funnier, smarter and genuinely better half; the lovely MEJ for gracing this show with her presence and humor; his parents for all their love and support; and all of his adopted theater relatives for getting him to where he is today!
Alicia Goodman (Co-Producer) is producing for the first time at LTA. She has previously produced Copenhagen and Oleanna at Perisphere Theater and is thrilled to be working again with Heather Benjamin and once more involved with local theater after a multiyear hiatus. Heartfelt thanks to the cast, crew and others behind the scenes who worked together to make this production possible.
Allison Gray-Mendes (Properties Design/Set Dressing) is thrilled to join LTA for the first time! She has previously designed with TAP, where she was lucky to assist under Pauline Lamb before getting a nudge to take on shows herself. Allison gets all of her talent from her mother, who made the best costumes and poured loads of creativity into supporting her three kids as a stay-at-home mom. Allison would like to thank her four-legged props fetchers, Rustie and TJ, for not getting too much slobber on things, and her husband, Mark, for being wildly enthusiastic anytime she takes on a new show!
JK Lighting Designs (Lighting Designers) is an award-winning lighting design duo, Jeffrey Scott Auerbach and Kimberly Crago, who are active at LTA, ACCT, DS, TAP and other local theatres. Jeff and Kimberly are excited and honored to work with this talented cast and crew. Their recent productions at LTA include Ripcord and The Belle of Amherst. Jeff thanks David and Katie for their love and support. Kimberly thanks Steve for being a real swell guy.

Chanel Lancaster (Hair/Makeup Designer) is excited to be returning to LTA for Wait Until Dark. Most recently she designed the hair and makeup for The Bluest Eye (DS) and The Revolutionists (LTA). She would like to thank Heather Benjamin for the opportunity to work on this amazing production and her husband, Austin, for all the love and support.
Pam Leonowich (Co-Master Electrician) has been climbing the light ladders at LTA for over 115 consecutive shows and is proud to follow in her mother’s theatre footsteps. Her mother managed and designed productions for the troops during World War II with the British Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). She is pleased to be teaming with lighting design team JK Lighting and co-master electrician Micheal J. O’Connor. Special thanks to our dedicated light crew.
Lauren Markovich (Co-Stage Manager) is so excited to be part of this production and hopes you are just as excited to see it! In college, she had the opportunity to work with the Delaware Resident Ensemble Players. Now, her “real job” is in the social work field, but she works with community theaters in her free time to scratch the theater itch. Wait Until Dark is her seventh production at LTA. Shout out to Nick and her family for the love and support!
Micheal J. O’Connor (Co-Master Electrician) frequently works as master electrician at many local community theaters. Pam Leonowich is his favorite co-ME. He enjoys working with Kimberly and Jeff along with the very talented tech crew at LTA. He can often be found backstage or in the tech booth, always in the dark.
Janice Rivera (Sound Designer) has worked on sound design projects that include Dracula (WATCH Award), You Can’t Take It With You, The Fabulous Lipitones , The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) , Spamalot (WATCH nomination) and Cantorial (WATCH nomination) at LTA; and Death by Design at ACCT. She produced, directed and edited the audio theatre podcast Between Acts. Onstage she has played Cookie in Rumors, Carmen in The Nance, Camila Rosario in In the Heights (LTA), Aldonza in Man of La Mancha (MCP) and Cathy in The Last Five Years (SCT).

Meet the Crew (continued)
Jean Schlichting and Kit Sibley (Costume Design) are very pleased to costume this production of Wait Until Dark. They have costumed many shows at LTA and elsewhere and have been nominated for and won a number of LTA and WATCH awards. In addition, they have taught costume design at the high school level and worked with several youth theater groups in the DMV. They are grateful to LTA’s Board of Governors for keeping the lights on during the pandemic so they were not “waiting in the dark” until theater started up again!
Stefan Sittig (Fight Choreographer/Intimacy Choreographer) has been involved in 100-plus productions, including stage combat work off Broadway; in Canada, Brazil and Uruguay; in DC at the Kennedy Center, Studio Theatre, 1st Stage, ATLAS, WS, Open Circle Theatre, the American Century Theatre and Workhouse Arts Center; and at regional theatres, colleges and universities and community theatres across the country. For LTA: Moonlight and Magnolias, West Side Story (WATCH Award—Outstanding Stage Combat), A Streetcar Named Desire. 25-plus years with the Society of American Fight Directors, faculty GMU School of Theatre. www.stefansittig.com.
Margaret Snow (Wardrobe) is appreciative to be working the wardrobe operation for Wait Until Dark and to be working with our director, producer, crew and cast. Operating in darkness can be very liberating, particularly when wardrobe malfunctions occur and an escape from the responsibility is needed. It happens in every show, so watch closely. ...
14
Mona Wargo (Set Painting) has been active in local community theater for many years. Formerly painting for DS and CCDC, she joined LTA in 2016 and has since won several awards at LTA as well as a WATCH Award. She recently painted for ACCT as well as LTA’s first show this new season. She continues to teach painting classes at LTA. Mona is happy to be leading a talented and hardworking crew again.
Russell M. Wyland (Rigging) has produced numerous shows and dressed sets for countless LTA productions, including Hairspray, The Full Monty, Avenue Q, 33 Variations, The Underpants and A Fox on the Fairway. He is the winner of several LTA and WATCH awards for set decoration, special effects and producing. Russ’s specialty and first love, however, is rigging, and he has been hanging curtains, signs and chandeliers at LTA for almost 25 years.

Welcome to the “Shakespeare Garden” in The Little Theatre of Alexandria Courtyard! This beautiful garden was made possible with donations from LTA members and supporters who purchased bricks during the LTA Council’s fund-raising campaign February-April of 2017. We have planted floral species that figured prominently in the Bard’s writings. We invite you to check out our courtyard during intermission and see how many you can identify!
The Council of The Little Theatre of Alexandria, organized in 1961, is a dedicated group of about 70 members that supports the theatre with special contributions. While our “Shakespeare Garden” is our most massive accomplishment so far, our past contributions included: scholarships for high school students, a new range, draperies and ice maker for the Council Green Room, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for sponsored theatre seats, a computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements, including automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for safety. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $215,000. The Council conducts three business/social meetings per year, and decorates the theatre for the winter holidays. We are pleased to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and proud to support one of the best community theatres in America today!
