GREETINGS My beloved dragons, It is with the utmost sadness that I bid thee farewell. Four short years in Key Club and they’re quickly coming to an end. However, it is a bittersweet moment for me because while I may be sad, I’m glad to be leaving the division in good hands. Morgan, make me proud. I know you will. This issue is called “The Farewell Issue” because I truly wish for you all to “fare well.” It is too difficult and entirely unrealistic to say goodbye and so farewell will suffice. Farewell, to me, means until we meet again, I wish you nothing but the best. In all your future endeavors whether it is with service or just any other personal goals, I wish you all nothing but the best. I hope this last month of the term is fulfilling for you all, officers and members alike. I cherish every moment that I’ve spent with each and every one of you from working on a fundraiser, playing an icebreaker, making friendship bracelets for the Children’s Hospital, to singing all of the songs from the Frozen soundtrack. Each means so much to me and I can’t thank you enough for giving me such a valuable experience this past year serving as your lieutenant governor. Once, during a club officer check-up, I mulled over how I could describe Key Club and its impact on me. I then came up with this extremely cliched simile: “Key Club to me is like a bee, it goes around and pollinates flowers, allowing them to blossom and grow.” However seemingly corny, this holds true for me and I wouldn’t doubt that it holds true for you as well. Key Club has made me the person who I am today; believe it or not, I wasn’t the most confident and outgoing person before high school. I was awkward (and I probably still am) and reserved, I couldn’t speak in front of crowds, I felt really alone in the world. However, Key Club changed all of that for me. I made some of the best friends I will ever have in Key Club, I fell in love with service and helping with causes much bigger than myself, and I blossomed and grew. While I may be leaving, I hope that in these four short years, I perhaps paved the way for others to blossom and grow as I did. Key Club has had such a profound impact on me and I hope it’ll continue to do that for generations to come. As my Key Club journey is coming to an end, I’d like to thank everyone that was a part of my Key Club life that influenced and inspired me. This includes everyone that I’ve came across this year as well as those who have helped me from the very beginning. In my bout of nostalgia, just to name a few who originated from our very own division, I’d like to thank: Kelsey Mejlaender, Anna Le, James Eng, Nguyen Huynh, Mr. Zylstra, Frau Ellis, Ms. Vandenbos, Sue Owens, Marilyn Milne, Jennifer Diep, and Tina Chung. Thank you for changing my life, Key Club. Thank you Division 32. As for my last words, I say “BALENCIAGA!”

In Love and Service,

Alan Yeh

Lieutenant Governor of Division 32

What is the ELIMINATE Project? The Eliminate Project is a joint project with Kiwanis and UNICEF to internationally ter-minate MNT. What is MNT? In 30 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating– tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too. Who suffers from MNT? MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

If you could spend the day with anyone (living or dead), who would it be and why?

If I could spend the day with anyone I would like to spend the day with Hayao Miyazaki because I love his works of art and would love to see what goes through his head when he makes his master pieces. What is your spirit animal and why?

I would say that my spirit animal would be the Fox because not only is it the best animal ever and my last name, but also I believe that I can be as clever as one and a little deceptive at times. Why do you love Key Club? The reason that i love key club is that its not just a club that you go to just because, but you

go there to be with the people with another part of your family once a week. a place that helps you shine for who you really are and nobody discourages you for that but encourages is instead.

10

Why Devon? As both a club officer and lieutenant governor, I have observed first-hand Devon’s passion and dedication to his club. Devon possesses the heart of a true Key Clubber- he is constantly striving to improve his club, he is always willing to help others, and he just genuinely cares, and after all, that is our way of life. Seeing him grow these past two years has been a true honor and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for him. Although just a member, I’m confident that he will truly take Hazen Key Club to new heights.

Hey Dragons! I’m so excited to see your beautiful faces at DCON! The Spirit Stick is definitely ours, but only if we band together and show the PNW District and everybody in Seattle that we’re the biggest, the strongest, and the loudest. THIRTY WHO? THIRTY-TWO! Division 32 is the most spirited division and I’m honored to be able to serve you all. If you didn’t know, the end of DCON officially marks the start of my term. I can already tell I will be working with the most hardworking and phenomenal officers and serving with the most caring and passionate Key Clubbers. Keep on serving guys! And don’t forget to thank Alan Yeh, the outstanding leader of our division, for everything he has done for us! Because he’s the best! :’)

LS

To Bryan, Elise, Kimberly, Kelsey, and Calvin: There came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat to fight the issues no single key clubber could withstand. On that day, the Officers were born. Coming together was the beginning. Keeping together will be the progress. Working together will lead to the success. We’re The Officers. It’s what we call ourselves; we’re sort of like a team. Welcome to the Officers Initiative. -Emily Ly

OFFICER WILL

Dear Incoming Key Club Secretary,

Congratulations on winning the busiest position of your club’s office! You’ll be relied on staying on top hours, attendance, minutes, reports, etc. – but fear not! It’s all doable. Your job is to keep the club together and posted with all types of news, events, and instructions. You and the rest of the crew will become the best of friends, of course with all the time together, by the end of your terms, but don’t forget about your advisors from both Kiwanis and the administration of your school. The advisors are vital in the actual doing of the team’s plans, so be sure to email them your weekly minutes. As for hours, having several tens of people in the club, it may seem overwhelming to have to keep track of all the work they’ve done – but updating them as soon as you can will make it easier. It’s better to spend a few minutes a week to update than to spend an hour or so updating a month’s worth. Spell the whole name of the event out and be sure to write in the date – it’s unbelievably confusing when trying to figure out an abbreviation of an event, trust me. Also, keeping them updated will make your secretary report a lot easier to do, for there is an important segment of the report where you have to list all the events, number of people, and the total number of hours. The report is not for the higher board to judge you or your club, don’t be scared – just be truthful and remember to write them a little note to make them smile at the end of it! Key Club will take a lot of your time, but it’s totally fine because Key Clubbers are amazing. Don’t be afraid to have a social life. Stay on top of your school work as well as Key Club work. People will understand if you have some homework to do or a test study for, because we all do! Have a blast, keep on the legacy, and I wish you luck!
