GREETINGS Hello everyone! The new school year is in full swing, do you know what that means? More Key Club! It’s time to recruit more members, rally up the freshmen, plan more fundraisers and service projects, and participate a lot more in division-wide events! I hope you’re as excited as I am for this new school year; it’s going to be fantastic! I have a lot planned for the months to come. To the wonderful officers, did you know that your term is almost halfway over? Time flies, doesn’t it? Have you accomplished what you wanted to in the past six months or so? Make sure you’re ready for the challenges that you may face this year; you ran for a reason so make your last six months count! To the new members, congratulations! You have made an important decision in choosing to join Key Club. Get ready for one of the most action-packed, enriching experiences of your entire high school career. I know that I’m not the only one when I say that Key Club has truly changed my life. In this newsletter, you’ll find information about Trick-Or-Treat for UNICEF, it’s fast approaching so get ready. Let’s see who can raise the most for The Eliminate Project! Also, if your club is interested in doing a certain service project but doesn’t have the funds to execute it, check out the informaiton regarding the Youth Opportunities Fund. It’s an extremely under-utilized resource and it could come in handy. This newsletter also contains information about Key Leader, which is in Gresham NOT Corbett. Sorry for the mix-up. If you’re interested in Key Leader, remember to register as soon as possible. I’m going! Will I get to see you there? On a more personal note, these past six months or so as LTG have been awesome and I can’t thank you guys enough for all of your support. I love my division! #SwagginDragons

In Love and Service,

Alan Yeh

district project:

What is the ELIMINATE Project? The Eliminate Project is a joint project with Kiwanis and UNICEF to internationally ter-minate MNT. What is MNT? In 30 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating– tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too. Who suffers from MNT? MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES FUND WHAT IS THE YOF? The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. They would also purchase toys and school supplies for the orphans and put them inside of backpacks and deliver them to the approximately 150 children in the three orphanages.

YOF grants can help you take action. Look around and identify the things that need to get done in your school, community or world. Key Clubs have applied for grant funds to support a variety of service projects

HOW TO APPLY The newly updated YOF Grant Application is finally out!

YOF grants are given only to Key Clubs and/or club members. There is only one funding cycle for the Youth Opportunities Fund. The application must be received by October 15 each year. Clubs may request funding assistance from $100 to $2,000. The committee typically funds those clubs who are asking for a portion of the total cost of the project, and clubs who are working with other organizations to fund and complete the project. Applications can be submitted via email, mail, or fax. More information can be found on the application itself. November 4th-8th, 2013 is...

Key Club Week gives you the opportunity to show your community what Key Club is truly about: service. Each day places an emphasis on service, to promote Key Club within our homes, schools and communities and to make Key Club a household name.

K EY L U B C

Do your part to make sure Key Club Week—Nov. 4-8, 2013—starts Kiwanis Family Month with a bang. Join other Key Clubs from around the world by following the day suggestions below.

MONDAY, NOV. 5

Show your K in every way—Show people what Key Club is all about! Spread the word by wearing Key Club gear and publicizing Key Club Week in local stores, your school Web site, community newspapers—even on the radio. Officially announce Key Club Week in your community with a proclamation and refer to the Key Club public relations manual to get great tips on how to publicize Key Club in your community.

TUESDAY, NOV. 6

Kudos to the Key players—Personally thank all the Key Club supporters you know—teachers, advisors and other Key players. Write thank-you notes, host an appreciation dinner or do something uniquely your own style to recognize the contributions of these special people.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 7

Connect the Ks—Key Club is the largest high school service organization in the world and is a member of the Kiwanis family. Celebrate the entire family of Kiwanis by getting the whole gang involved. Connect with local Kiwanis, Circle K International, Builders, Kiwanis Kids or Aktion clubs and team up for a joint service project.

THURSDAY, NOV. 8

Bring a friend to Key Club—More members = more service. Increasing the amount of service Key Club performs increases the impact Key Club has on the world. Bring a friend, or two, or more to your next Key Club meeting. Download recruitment resources.

FRIDAY, NOV. 9

Your way—This is your club’s chance to do its own thing and make its mark. Pick a project, plan a recruitment party or combine activities from the other Key Club Week days. Whatever idea you choose, take it and run with it.

“Meeting all of those new people and knowing that they all were there to celebrate being part of a Key Club on a much larger scale than we usually see as well as working on ways to make our communities better.” -Shelby Schmitt, HHS

Seattle Rally 2013 was an ultimate blast! With over 350 attendees this year, more than 100 of which were from Division 32, all attendees enjoyed fun games, great company, informative workshops, and inspirational speakers. Hazen High School was honored to host this amazing event and the entire staff was able to see just how awesome Key Clubbers are. I’m so proud of how many people Division 32 was able to bring and how much spirit I saw throughout the day; we were the largest division there by far! Keep it up, you guys! I can’t wait for District Convention 2014! It’s going to be insane.

If you could spend the day with anyone (living or dead), who would it be and why? Gosh, uh, there are so many cool people out there. The innovators of the past like da Vinci, movement leaders like Susan B. Anthony, favorite authors (see above); I’d just love to hear stories about their time period and their lives and what they worked for. What is your spirit animal and why? I don’t even know. An eagle? They seem very majestic and powerful and I mean, who doesn’t want to fly? Why do you love Key Club? It’s an organization that brings about a sense of camaraderie and purpose, confidence and service. It really shows people that together, we can change if not the world, then at least the communities that we call home. Key Club really gives people the chance to grow as leaders and speakers, advocators and visionaries, and I know I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it weren’t for this club. All the crazy stress and planning that comes with being an officer all seems worth it when we get to stand before a completed project, shoulder to shoulder with fellow students, and know wholeheartedly that we have come together to do something amazing.

18

Why Tracy? Tracy has been an officer during all of her years in Key Club and has done an outstanding job each year. As president, she’s provided her members with great service projects and has worked with the officers on a seemingly endless search for a new Kiwanis advisor and faculty advisor. Managing a huge club like Kentridge Key Club and Tracy, along with the officers has been working tirelessly so that her club can run smoothly this school year. From designing shirts to attending Kiwanis meetings, she has really impressed me as a president and member. Great job, Tracy! Your work has not gone unnoticed.
