GREETINGS Hello! Salut! Hola! Shalom! nuqneH! I hope those salutations made you feel out of this world. Well here it is, the second newsletter of my term as Lt. G. Time really flies, doesn’t it? It almost seems like DCON was just a few days ago. With that said, time is of the essence; time management is probably one of the most important skills you can have as a leader or a person in general. Especially with AP and IB exams on top of your regular homework, extracurriculars and Key Club responsibilities, time management is the perfect asset for success. Always keep up with due dates whether they’re for school or for Key Club reports, nominations, submissions, etc. Procrastination will be your biggest enemy and your ultimate downfall so don’t let it get in the way of your success! But also, don’t let time and procrastination get in the way of enjoying what you do. Organize, plan, but most importantly, prioritize. Do what’s urgent first then move on to the important things while taking a break every now and then to relax and renew yourself. As time progresses, the time we have left in Key Club slowly dwindles; two months have already passed since officers have assumed their positions, and the school year is almost over. Are you happy with what you accomplished this year? What are things that you can improve for next year? Underclassmen can’t possibly know what’s in store for them and they have so much time left to achieve the impossible! Seniors, as you reminisce about the good times you had, your time in high school is almost up and you, of all people, know how important time is and how fast it flies by. Service, however, never stops! There’s so many more opportunities for you in college or wherever you’re heading. Join Circle-K or Kiwanis, stay involved in your community! Whatever the future has in store for you, I know you’ll all be aca-awesome. In this issue, you’ll read about the amazing opportunities that the Kiwanis Family has in store as well as some quick and easy service opportunities to integrate into club meetings or interclubs as the school year approaches its end. Enjoy the sun, good luck with exams, and stay fergalicious. YOU’RE ALL EASY, BREEZY, & BEAUTIFUL!

In Love and Service,

Alan Yeh

Lieutenant Governor of Division 32

district project:

What is the ELIMINATE Project? The Eliminate Project is a joint project with Kiwanis and UNICEF to internationally ter-minate MNT. What is MNT? In 30 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating– tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too. Who suffers from MNT? MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

K-FAMILY KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL

Kiwanians around the globe have one common goal: To serve the children of the world. Kiwanis advocates this vision every day by providing opportunities to serve for every member of a community through Service Leadership Programs. Through these opportunities, youth and young adults around the world become competent, capable and compassionate leaders.

CKI (FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS)

Circle K International (CKI) is the premiere university service organization in the world sponsored by Kiwanis International. With clubs on more than 550 campuses globally, programming is based upon the tenets of service, leadership, and fellowship.

AKTION CLUB (FOR ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES)

Aktion Club members in more than 200 clubs in seven nations allow adults living with disabilities to develop initiative and leadership skills through hands-on service. These adults return to the community the benefits, help, and caring they have received.

BUILDERS CLUB (FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS) Nearly 40, 000 middle and junior high students in 1,300 clubs in 18 nations contribute service to school and community while developing leadership and people skills. Builders Club members implement practical service-learning principals as they focus on supporting organizations that focus on the needs of children.

K-KIDS (FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS)

4

K-Kids is a student-led community service club for elementary students that teaches members the value of helping others through participation in community service projects and club activities.

DID YOU KNOW?

There are six branches of the Kiwanis Family: Kiwanis, Circle K International, Key Club, Builders Club, Aktion Club, and K-Kids. All of these branches come together for one cause-to better our world. We can work with local Kiwanis, Key Clubs, Builders Clubs; and K-Kids on service projects and events. No matter the age, there is a branch of the Kiwanis Family with which you can get involved!

CLUB SPOTLIGHT

KENT-MERIDIAN KEY CLUB One big accomplishment our club has done over the year was that Kent-Meridian Key Club worked with the K-Family to establish and promote a Builders Club at Mill Creek Middle School. To help the club grow our officer board mentored the student who will be having the same job as them. We often communicate with the Builders Club’s president as it helps us stay informed with their progress for their first year. Also, to help give our future KeyClubers gain some experience with high school community service, we’ve asked some of the builders to come out and volunteer with us with some events such as selling 50/50 raffle tickets at ThunderBird games and even asked them join us at one of the DCMs. By establishing a Builders Club and maintaining a healthy relationship with them, we hope to encourage younger students at the Middle School level to join Key Club once they enter High School. -Raphael Enrico (KMHS VP)

EASY WAYS TO SERVE BRIGHT, SHINING SERVICE Take an afternoon to brighten the classrooms and corridors of your campus…literally. Gather a few members of your Key Club and equip them with glass cleaner, towels and everything else needed to cut through the grime on the windows. Extend the project to the entire community to make your service more visible, or to raise funds for your favorite service partner or charity. CARE CARDS A great service project to incorporate into a club meeting Fashion handmade holiday, birthday or sympathy cards for members of your community or donate to your local Children’s Miracle Network hospital. Write encouraging or inspiring messages inside each card and deliver as necessary. Remember to sign each card as “From the members of our local Key Club.” MIRACLE MINUTE At your next school dance, Key Club event or party, promote the Key Club values by hosting a Miracle minute. For sixty crazy seconds, blare your favorite music and make your way through the crowd to collect pocket change, etc. After one minute, count the donations and announce the amount you were able to raise. Remember to advertise heavily before the dance or event, and consider having a reward (like extending dance time) if the crowd reaches a sufficient benchmark. READ-A-THON Volunteer at a local library or elementary school to host a reading day. Choose your favorite kid’s book with an appropriate, important message and share it with the children of your community. Enjoy your unique opportunity to promote literacy and help instill a love for reading in the lives of participating kids. SEEDS OF SERVICE A great Kiwanis family inter-club opportunity Want to liven up the look of your home, school and community? Take a few minutes this spring to plant flowers at your campus, park or just all around town. Doing so will beautify your area, and may even plant the seeds of service in all those who enjoy the plants, urging them to pick up where you left off. TELEPHONES FOR TROOPS A great Kiwanis family inter-club opportunity Do you have drawers of old cell phones collecting dust in your house? What are you supposed to do with them when you upgrade, anyway? This project would have you collect your own phones along with your schoolmates and donate them to the www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com initiative. These old phones, worth little to you and I, can create a vital link between overseas soldiers and their families back home. THANK A TEACHER A great service project to incorporate into a club meeting As students, nothing we do would be possible without the help of our schools’ faculty and staff. Consider showing your thanks to these important figures by designating one or more meetings per year to card creation. Let each faculty member in your school know how much they’re appreciated by writing inspirational messages of thanks inside personalized cards. Personally delivering them can also add a special touch.

MEMBER S

DRAGONS OF THE MONTH PRANITHA MAGANTY

If you could spend the day with anyone (living or dead), who would it be and why? If I could spend the day with anyone, I would spend it with Ellen DeGeneres. She is hilarious and extremely kind. I watch her show almost everyday and I am always inspired by the great things she does. What is your spirit animal and why? I would be an owl because I’m not always the person who talks all the time. I’m more like the one who silently observes people. Why do you love Key Club? love Key Club because I absolutely love helping the community and contributing what I can to make the world a better place. I know it’s cheesy but it couldn’t be more true. Also, I’ve been involved with Key Club a lot more this year because of my leadership role and have found that there are amazing people involved with this club. I love the Key Club community and how we all come together to help others. CLUB: Kentwood High School BIRTHDAY: November 23rd GRADUATING YEAR: 2014 FAVORITE COLOR: Purple! FAVORITE BOOK: Definitely the Harry Potter Series! FAVORITE SONG: There’s so many, but I’ll say “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction: ) FAVORITE FOOD: I’m literally obsessed with all types of food, but I guess ice cream is pretty great. FAVORITE QUOTE: “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” -Dumbledore GUILTY PLEASURES: Eating and watching the TV Show, Swamp People POSITIONS HELD: KWHS Secretary 2012-Present

Why Pranitha? Pranitha has served as secretary for two years. She has attended many of the DCMs and has been a very active member of Kentwood Key Club. Despite her many other commitments, Pranitha comes to every meeting and stays an hour after school for our board meetings. I’m not sure how, but she manages to put up with my craziness and helps me to stay on track. Since she was secretary last year as well, she did not need to be told what to do. Pranitha sends secretary reports in without any reminder from me, does the attendance, and records hours. If I ever need help, she is the first person I go to. Pranitha not only attended DCON, but helped me organize the process and encouraged members to attend. It was a pleasure to have her on the board and I know I will use her expertise next year. Her contribution to Kentwood Key Club is beyond what I could ever have asked. Pranitha is very fun to be around. Her personality and friendliness makes her stand out among the rest of the members. Everyone knows Pranitha and can tell you she has worked hard behind the scenes with me to make everything work efficiently and smoothly. She is organized, helpful, and dedicated. -Navid Azodi (KWHS President)

If you could spend the day with anyone (living or dead), who would it be and why? If I could spend the day with anyone it would be my mom, cause she is one cool lady. What is your spirit animal and why? My spirit animal is a penguin because I like penguins. and they’re cute, and they like to huddle together for warmth, and the documentaries about them made me fall in love with their fuzzy bodies. I like the little ones that can’t get over the ice blocks so they tumble.. and slide. Why do you love Key Club? I love Key Club because it’s a community where people can find friends that have similar interests and it’s like a big family that loves to do good in the world! Is that too cheesy?

Why Cleo? Cleo has been appointed as Convention Aide and has already started working hard to make the next DCON the amazing! With her dedication to service and leadership experience, I know that she’ll do a wonderful job this year!
