KEY CLUB Leadership Training Conference ( LTC ) Immediate Past President Andrea Lin, Bayside High School

The 66th Annual Leadership Training Conference was held from March 27 30th at the Desmond Hotel. This year, I had the privilege of being named the title of the New York District Distinguished Key Club President. Leadership Training Conference is a great way of experiencing the values of Key Club and truly seeing what the organization is about. During LTC, I was able to learn many new things such as leadership skills, better communication qualities, college etc. I was also able to proudly watch my incoming board prepare and learn what was coming their way in the future year. This is my 4th LTC. It is truly amazing to see the same people that I met years ago mold into the leaders that they are too, speaking with such confidence. Those who were once very timid and outspoken. I was also able to meet many new kind and caring people with the same passion as my own which is to serve our communities and do good for the people around us. The 66th Annual Leadership Training Conference was truly inspiring!

KEY CLUB Another PerspecRve ( LTC) Kelly Song, Benjamin N. Cardozo High School “LTC is the best weekend of your life.” That’s a

fact I can confirm after attending my first Leadership Training Conference this past March. These brief but memorable three days of interacting with other Key Clubbers, attending informative workshops, and going through crazy wardrobe changes were magical just as the theme itself states. Like most First Timers at LTC, I was both extremely nervous and excited. What are we supposed to do at workshops? How do I naturally approach key clubbers without being awkward? All these questions were constantly roaming through my mind. However, after the attending my first workshop, it was as if magic was really in the air. I’ve realized that being able to interact with others that share the same passion as you do is a memory that you’ll want to cherish forever. Through this past conference, I have formed a new family with brothers and sisters that I never had. At the moment, “I feel good, oh I feel so good!” LTC has opened new doors for me within Key Club and the journey has just begun. The 66th Leadership Training Conference was an unforgettable experience and I now truly understand what being a key clubber means.

KEY CLUB Service Year Flashback Immediate Past Vice President Su Jung Bae, QHSS “Please welcome your 2014-2015 District Key Club board!” The cheers were deafening. A new Key club year has started in April of 2014. It also marked the end of my Vice president term in Key Club, and also marked my last year in Key Club. Four years ago when I walked into my first Key Club meeting I had no idea what was going on. A school with a total population of 400, this club was huge, around twenty people. I knew no one, not even my fellow freshman friends. But soon, one event that I attended became 2 which became 4 which became 8 and so on. That February while running for editor, I knew that what I was doing was going to change my high school life. Not only did it change it, it changed me. I experienced my first AIDS walk, my first relay for life. I met my Kiwanis and went volunteering with them. Key Club from its freshman year to senior saw multiples of changes. Every year as a new LTG started working with us, we would get new experiences. One of my biggest memories was when we stuffed our own stuffed animals with Past Distinguished LTG Antonio Liu. We all sat together in a huge circle in the basement of the Forest Hills Library and talked, listened to music, and stuffed the endless amounts of animals. Key Club, like I said doesn’t only change your life, it also changes who you are mentally. Leadership skills we didn’t have before was some things we developed ourselves and improved on to lead our club better. Public speaking was taught by our fellow key clubbers to help improve talking with other key clubbers. We helped each other out unconsciously because that was Key Club. After my first LTC in sophomore year we went on the same walks as we always do. March of Dimes, AIDS walk, Relay for Life, etc. But this time there was a difference. LTC does that to you. Every time you see a key clubber you think to yourself, “OH! That person goes to so and so school and has a great personality!” (Or in my case the people would have great hair.) Key Club changed me so greatly that if I didn’t join key club I don’t know who I would be anymore. I don’t know how I would spend my weekends at home instead of going volunteering and meeting new friends and reconnecting with old friends. I will definitely remember everyone because some people are unforgettable and the things that we have been through speak a lot. Rain during AIDS walk, the BLISTERING heat during March of Dimes. Freezing while practicing Christmas Carols on the way to a senior center. Key clubbers being late, getting lost in Far Rockaway and the list goes on. As a senior, my key club year is coming to a close. As I type this up per request of our LTG, tears come to my eyes. Graduation is 7 weeks away and that only means I have 7 more weeks with all the wonderful people I have met during my key club years. But key club will never be officially over. As I end my really long letter to the Key Clubbers reading this, I hope you guys all remember one thing. Key Club (cough cough) is a way of life.

KEY CLUB Service Spotlight Emilly Tan, QHSS OVen in our lives, we associate April with showers and May with flowers. But what do you think of when you hear “April 5th”? Kiwanis One Day of course! On this day, every club is encouraged to join the rest of the K-‐Kids, Circle K, AcRon Club and Kiwanis for a day of united service with their Key Club Family. This Kiwanis One day, Cardozo and Queens High School for the Sciences united with Veronica and Robert Witherspoon of Circle K to clean up Springfield Gardens Park. It was a windy Saturday as the group arrived by bus to see a once beauRful garden destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. While most of us were blessed to be untouched by Sandy, this park wasn’t as fortunate. The trees were stripped bare from winter, the stream which once split the park was a murky brown color and even the paint on the benches was chipped. Two girls were assigned to paint benches green, while everyone else grabbed some gloves and a rake to clean up the fall wreckage of leaves. And even though we had a shortage of plasRc bags, it felt great to haul each full bag onto the sidewalk and admire our handiwork. By the end of the day, we had raked 16 bags of leaves in two hours. For example, we had big hands shove theme into the gloves, and lijle gloves kept falling off. We had strong hands whose people who carried enormous bags on the back alone. We had the less strong people, who required help carrying their bag. We had groups of two, three, four and even a mother and her child working in unison. All together on Kiwanis One Day. The true purpose of this Saturday was to work together on one project and I think we’ve done it. Page 8

KEY CLUB Another Service Spotlight Sandra Wong and Melissa Ha, Bayside High School On April 5, 2014, Melissa Ha and I represented Bayside High School and Division 8 at the Second Annual Relay for Life event at Brooklyn Technical High School. Despite getting lost to Brooklyn Tech and asking three people for directions before arriving at the school, I had a fun day at Relay for Life. At the start of the event, we met Key Clubbers and non-Key Clubbers from all over. Subsequently, Tech students showcased their amazing talents and blew the crowd’s minds. Talents ranged from cheerleading to singing to Chinese yo-yo-ing. Shortly after all the talents were showcased, there were opportunities to purchase food, decorate a luminaria , and participate in activities such as the dunking booth, pie throwing booth, and face painting. At the dunking booth, a teacher spent eighty dollars for students to throw the ball endless amounts of times to try to dunk the other teacher. Some students succeeded in dunking this teacher. Some other students also volunteered to get dunked. After returning to the auditorium from these activities, the audience gained a plethora of knowledge from the guest speakers. Stories of cancer experiences were told and people were inspired. Last but not least, the luminarias were lit and placed all over the sides of the auditorium. Everyone was asked to stand up and walk around the auditorium in the dark as three songs played. At the conclusion of the event, the amount of money raised was announced and everyone left with more knowledge about cancer. In my opinion, this Relay for Life event was a success!
