Friday/ Early Sat. On early Friday morning, members of the New Jersey District Board of Key Club International gathered at Philadelphia Airport. There we boarded a flight to Charlotte, North Carolina; that took two hours before driving another two hours on the road. During the two hour ride we stopped at the infamous Bojangles, a popular fast food chain down in the south. Once we arrived at Black Mountain Camp we registered and walked around to meet people. Once we checked into our room, we hung out in the lobby and decided as a district to go up to the giant mansion on top of the hill. With cold weather but stunning views, we were fast to take pictures before heading back to the main building for dinner. After dinner we began the first general session, which consisted of an introduction by the North Carolina Kiwanis family District Governors. Following the introductions we were separated into groups and given Nations to go by. The members of these groups would become our close friends over the weekend. After family based exercises, we were read a “bedtime story, which taught us about leadership. On Saturday morning we were up early enough to see the sunrise, which was followed up by breakfast. Afterward, we did further work with our groups to build a car that had to resemble the qualities of a Kiwanis Family member. We also had to create a poster that showed facts of our assigned nation, and paper planes which we would later test in competition. Then we were off to have lunch.

Late Saturday/ Sunday It was going to fly by fast; that was for sure. After lunch on Saturday, INSERT Family PHOTO. at the Kiwanis Conference, we were heading back to the main room for the family group activities. I was pumped, yet a little nervous of just how quickly everything would go. That’s the thing with all these Kiwanis Family-related events; you wait and anticipate for them to happen, but once they commence, don’t blink. They happen in an instant, or so it seems like! Making the skit with the Canada family group (GO TEAM CANADA!) was a standout memory in Saturday’s events. The creativity and leadership shown by all the members in our group was incredible to witness, especially since these people hadn’t known each other 24 hours prior. Acting a minor part of a tree in a rendition of Winnie the Pooh, I observed the members of this group. Whether they were Kiwanis, Circle K, Key Club; it didn’t make a difference. They came together to make an absolutely wonderful, hilarious play in such a short amount of time. Boundary breaking was in a category all on its own. I had done this exercise at two of the West Virginia Key Club District Fall Rallies in past years, but this time it was different. The atmosphere among our circle was intense, but so many walls fell as our family opened up to one another. As we shared our thoughts, feelings, and opinions; a sense of unity formed between all of us. Just like the bond we all shared through being a part of the Kiwanis family. I definitely was not ready to leave Sunday morning to head back to West Virginia. Kiwanis Family Conference was a wonderful and memorable experience that reminded me tenfold why I wanted to be a part of this organization in the first place. Serving others and making a difference, one life at a time. I know I’ll be back again as a Circle K-er or Kiwanian. That time cannot come fast enough. It’s one weekend I’ll definitely never forget! - Mallory Rinker, Governor of West Virginia District of Key Club
