Gabriel gets more than he bargained for when he joins the local drama group and potential suitors start vying for his attentions. But is it love or the farmer’s assets they are after? Find out in this rib tickling romp of wily women and rural Romeos.
Joyced! is a tour-de-force tour of Joycean Dublin. It is an exciting whirlwind odyssey through people, personalities, places and events in the year 1904. This one-woman show through multi-character performances (at least 22!) and magical word play, depicts the most important people to Joyce; his father, Oliver St John Gogarty, the tenor John Mc Cormack and of course Nora. One of the big Irish successes at the Edinburgh Fringe 2012.
The touching story of homeless McGoldrig, who once had splendid things. But he has lost it all, including his mind. He now dives into the wonderful wounds of his past through the romantic world of Rudolph Valentino. Dare to laugh at despair and gasp at redemption in this brave, bleak but beautiful awardwinning production. ‘a must-see if ever there was one’ ***** The List Award: THE SCOTSMAN FRINGE FIRST and THE HERALD ANGEL – Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2011

Set on the small Aran Island community of Inishmaan off the western coast of Ireland, c 1934, the inhabitants are excited to learn of a Hollywood film crew’s arrival in neighbouring Inishmore to make a documentary about life on the islands. “Cripple” Billy Claven, eager to escape the poverty, gossip and boredom of Inishmaan, vies for a part in the film, and to everyone’s surprise, the orphan gets his chance.

The Sand Park by Seamus O’Rourke
The Bridge Below The Town by Pat Mc Cabe / Livin Dred Theatre Co
Thurs 11th Apr | 8.30pm Tickets: €16/€14 conc
Wed 17th & Thurs 18th Apr | 8.30pm Tickets: €18/€16 conc
The Sand Park is the sometimes hilarious account of how big-hearted Offaly farmer James Anthony Lowery, a man in his mid-fifties, came to terms with the death of his son fifteen years ago and now, more recently, that of his wife Rose. It’s a play about rural Irish life and the way we cope with the inevitable. And then a strange thing happens. The Sand Park, from the writer of “Ride On” is funny, uplifting and real.
A new play from the author of “The Butcher Boy” and “The Dead School”. As an elderly lady makes tea late at night she becomes aware of a ‘presence’. A dialogue begins as the presence shifts from a genial refined gentleman to a small town middle class lady to someone else entirely, a figure from the future. And always to the strains of Eileen Donaghy’s hit parlour song, The Bridge Below the Town. “A beautiful and magnificent heartbreaking ghost story set in the midlands over a period of fifty years-a lament and a celebration of a way of life that can never be again”

A memoir in word and song of A celebration of the work of Robert Burns Delia Murphy and other Scottish traditional folk music
Fri 18th Jan | 9pm | Tickets €20 There’s a tendency for the word ‘unique’ to be bandied around a little too freely in music circles, but that’s the only way to describe Jerry Fish’s genre bending style. A highly charismatic performer who refuses to countenance audiences having anything but a good time. Jerry routinely fills the country’s biggest venues with his travelling musical medicine show, his swaggering vocal, generous and infectious smile and that fantastic vaudeville moustache.

Robert Burns night has been part of the Scottish Culture for over 200 years as a means of commemorating their best loved bard on the 25th January. Although we’ve missed the birth date by a week we are very keen to celebrate this year, especially considering the strong connection with Co. Louth. To celebrate traditional Scottish music in style we’re delighted to welcome two very talented and highly acclaimed musicians both from the North East of Scotland. Their playing will capture the beauty of Scot Gaelic ballads and tunes.
A pioneering singer is brought back to life in this stunning show. Delia Murphy, otherwise known as the Queen of Connemara, was a household name as a radio, concert and recording star in Ireland and abroad from the 1930’s to the 1960’s. Enjoy songs of this iconic balladeer and hear her fascinating life story told by her niece Carmen Cullen. Audiences can look forward to songs like ‘The Spinning Wheel’ , ‘Three Lovely Lasses’ and others.

To encourage and inspire artists at the beginning of the New Year, Droichead Arts Centre is hosting an exhibition of over 150 notebooks from artists of different genres and stages in their development. The exhibition came about when Kildare Arts Office invited artists to fill a notebook in a creative way and donate it to be part of a permanent collection.
Notebooks are a very personal way of recording your thoughts, exploring your ideas and recording your influences. They help you with a creative line of enquiry, to arouse inspiration and make art work. Join us for a morning workshop which will look at the best way to start an artist notebook. How do you get passed the daunting task of filling the first blank page? Price includes materials and refreshments but we ask that you bring your own notebook.
Raphael Hynes paints still-life objects from life. He uses simple mathematical ratios to help place the objects within the picture. The paintings are built up slowly with small measured units. This method and these ratios are used in an attempt to give the still-life objects some emotional weight.
