A beautiful, heart-warming story of a little girl and her Granny magically told through puppetry, music and a wonderful chair. When Grandad is not in his chair anymore, Granny packs away the memories of their life in suitcases. But the little girl unpacks them and breathes new life into them. Mostly non-verbal with just a couple of lines in both English & Irish.

Upstate Theatre Project

The Far Side blends contemporary art-making with local, personal and popular heritage in a unique and unsentimental cocktail for the here and now. Under the guidance of artist Feidlim Cannon, seven proud Droghedeans present a contemporary, living history, exploring the social history of the town through personal recollections of growing up and living there. The performance is a real, sometimes surreal, re-presentation of their stories, memories and reminiscences.

Three of Ireland’s finest poets come together for an afternoon of poetry, discussion and book signings. Tom French won the 2002 Forward Prize for Best First Collection for his book, Touching the Bones. Born in 1966, he lives in Dublin and works for the library service. Medbh is from Belfast and studied with Seamus Heaney at Queen’s University. Her poems are layered collages of feminine and domestic imagery. Conor grew up in Dundalk and now lives in Manchester. His prose memoir Red Mist appeared from Bloomsbury and was adapted as a film. Describing Sex: Creative Writing Workshop with Conor O’Callaghan 3 – 5pm | Fee €15 (includes reading) A practical embarrassment-free workshop about the crucial skill of describing acts of love in writing. We will look at successful poems and famous scenes from fiction, identifying a few aspects common to these pieces and how those aspects make them work. We will also look at a few less successful examples

Erica il Cane

In association with NeXus Arts A Drogheda Arts Festival commission Exhibition Opening | Sat 4th May | 6pm | All Welcome Exhibition continues until Sat 22nd June Internationally renowned Italian artist Erica il Cane comes to Drogheda to create a large mural that will envelop the outer walls of the Droichead Arts Centre. This will be accompanied by an exhibition of the artist’s work in the gallery. Erica’s work sees depictions of animals in unique, human situations rendered in Victorian-like illustrations. His narratives always try to communicate with the society which inhabits his painted spaces, searching for the uniqueness of each place. Erica il Cane has never shown in Ireland before. Watch out, be surprised.

Break a Leg by Peter Sheridan

Sat 4th May | 8.30pm | Tickets €10/€8 conc A new show based on his memoir from acclaimed playwright and director. Break a Leg tells the story of his life in the theatre and delves deeply into Sheridan’s life, as well as the wider culture and politics of Ireland in the 1960s and 1970s. The theatre, seen through Sheridan’s eyes, can do much more than entertain; it can itself be a vehicle of social change. Honestly confronting his emerging problems with panic attacks and alcohol, and blending social history with memoir, Sheridan’s story is written in gutsy, fresh prose that captures your attention from the first page. A witty, incisive show….it is a Tour de Force Joe Duffy

Three people on stage, happy, successful, gorgeous but there’s one thing they have in common. Each of these people has now or at some time in their lives experienced the torment of mental health problems. Actress Mary McEvoy, comedian John Moynes and broadcaster Dil Wickremasinghe have teamed up to share their stories of personal experiences in a mixture of stories, comedy sketches and songs to de-mystify, debunk and ultimately have a laugh with what really goes on inside our heads.

July 1947. The sun shines down on a post-war world. A 16 year-old boy walks through the gates of Belfast’s Harland & Wolff Titanic Shipyard. 1700 ships built between here and the Clyde, 67 different Trades, 300 acres of land and 35,000 men employed at its height. Regarded as the biggest and best there is, if you can dream it - they can build it. This is history - this is his story - this is The Boat Factory.

Talking Shop Ensemble

This award-winning play is about an army of men and the live register. His name is Willy. He is a 54 year old tradesman. He has a bad back and a short fuse. He likes a pint of black and he tends to lose more than he wins when it comes to gambling. His hands are sore. Running low on brass coins, dreaming of dimes and dollar bill signs.

Back in the Met after her huge triumph as Carmen in 2010, the spectacular Latvian mezzo soprano Elina Garanca sings Sesto in Mozart’s drama set in ancient Rome. Giuseppe Filianoti is the noble Tito and Barbara Frittoli is Vitellia, in this handsome revival of one of the composer’s final masterpieces.

Director David Alden’s dreamlike setting provides a compelling backdrop for this dramatic story of jealousy and vengeance. Marcelo Álvarez stars as the conflicted king; Karita Mattila is Amelia, the object of his secret passion; and Dmitri Hvorostovsky is her suspicious husband.

The last in this season is Prokofiev’s great ballet based on Shakespeare’s timeless love story of two young lovers from feuding families. In his new (2010) Bolshoi choreography, the character of Juliet has been developed by the great Yuri Grigorovitch from his personal memories of Natalia Bessmertnova – his first Juliet, and main inspiration.
