Heworth is a warm and friendly golf club boasting a beautiful 18-hole parkland/heathland course and excellent practice facilities. We also enjoy a vibrant clubhouse, a fantastic restaurant and an unrivalled professional shop to stock up on the essentials before or after your round. Everyone is welcome at Heworth, including non golfers. The membership at Heworth is strong and is made up of several playing sections as well as almost 300 social members who use the clubhouse as a local bar and restaurant, hugely contributing to a fantastic relaxed feel for all. The club is of course more than just a golf course. At Heworth we enjoy a full and varied social calendar, including monthly social nights showcasing some of the region’s best live bands and comedians as well as offering discos and charity events throughout the year. Heworth Golf Club was founded in 1912 and has a long and proud history. The original wooden clubhouse; known locally as “The Caste”; was situated adjacent to the present 18th green. More recently the clubhouse was situated at the current home of Marshall’s Golf. The new clubhouse was opened on 4th July 1998 and after recent refurbishment, is a hotspot for golfers and nongolfers alike.
HISTORY
The golf course was originally a 9 hole lay-out and later developed into 18 holes in Thousands1976.of trees were planted towards the end of the 20th Century as all parts of the golf course were visible from the clubhouse. The efforts of all involved are now paying dividends as the golf course has flourished and provides fantastic aesthetics as well as a great challenge for golfers. The course continues to evolve, with recent bunker improvements providing a fantastic addition to the course. Heworth has been a hugely popular local golf course for over 100 years, and continues to be one of the most challenging but enjoyable courses around.Getafeel for the course before you set foot on it by reading through our hole-by-hole course tour. hole 1 – Gingling Gate Hole One is a short par four to start, but don’t be fooled by the yardage.
There is out of bounds on the righthand side which also runs tight around the back of the green. Along with trees on the left and well-placed fairway bunkers, it makes for a tough tee shot. Avoid all of this and you are faced with a mid to short iron shot into a wellguarded green that slopes right to left with a shelf that runs straight through the middle of the green from front to back. hole 2 – Three horseshoes Hole two plays downhill and down the prevailing wind so often plays shorter than the yardage suggests. Despite this, the hole easily plays its stroke index eight from the white tee. The boundary of the course, and out of bounds, runs the length of the hole down the right side. There is a water hazard in the form of a ditch across the fairway at approximately 150 yards, which proves to be the driving length for many golfers. The same ditch turns 90 degrees and continues to run the length of the hole to the green down the right-hand side of the fairway. The fairway can be fast running and the www.theheworthgolfclub.co.uk

green is a tricky and undulating surface which is firm and slopes front to back, making distance control difficult with approach shots.

hole 4 – Tunnel Hole four is a mid-length par four with trees right and left and with out of bounds on the right. There is also a heavy rough down the right-hand side. The fairway has two well placed bunkers, one right and one left.
Hole five is a long par four with trees right and left with out of bounds on the right. This is a tight driving hole with a fairway that slopes left to right. There are also two hedgerows in the semi rough 150 yards from the green, so a good tee shot is vital if you want a good view of the green. The green itself is protected by two well placed bunkers. The left bunker is long and narrow whilst the deep pot bunker on the right will require a good

hole 3 – Mousetrap Hole three is a short par three that can play very difficult if you don’t pay attention to the wind. The hole is well guarded by three bunkers and a small run-off area back left.
hole 7 – Pebble creek Hole seven is one of the harder tee shots to play. The hole is a mid-length par four and is probably the tightest hole on the course. An accurate tee shot is required as there are trees left and right, with deep rough on the right. A good tee shot will leave an approach of around 150 yards to a green that is protected by a steep faced pot bunker to the left and classic greenside bunker to the right. Players need to beware of the ditch that runs the width of the fairway in front of the green too! The green itself runs from back to front, making a par here a good score. hole 8 – Gap Hole eight is a mid-length par four with a dog leg from right to left. hole 6 – Dixielanders Hole six is a mid-length par three which plays slightly uphill, usually into the prevailing wind. It is well guarded by bunkers left and right, with a narrow entrance to the green. The green slopes back to front with a small shelf one quarter of the way up the green. Club selection is vital and par is always a good score.

Deep rough, out of bounds and trees are all the way down the left. After a good tee shot you need to avoid the fairway bunker on the left with your second shot to leave about 100 yards in to a big green protected by mounding on the left and two bunkers on the Theright.green itself slopes left to right. hole 10 – Whitemare Pool Hole 10 is a long par four. With trees left and right, you need a good tee shot or you will not reach the green in two. A good tee shot will leave anything from a fairway wood to a mid-iron into a green that has a bunker front right and another front left. The green itself slopes from front to back and right to left. Better to be long than short. hole 11 – Wrekendyke Hole 11 is a long par five with out of bounds, deep rough and trees running all the way up the right. A long tee shot brings the trees on the left into play. A good tee shot and a good second will leave anything from a long-iron to www.theheworthgolfclub.co.uk | 11

The fairway dips in the middle and there is a bunker on the right-hand side around 100 yards from the green to catch any wayward approach shots. The green itself has mounding on the right and a run-off area back left. It is one of the biggest greens on the course, sloping front to back and right to left. hole 13 – Palmers hill Hole 13 is a long par five with trees and deep rough all the way up the right. It also has trees up the left side of the fairway, which has a slight dog leg from left to right, and two bunkers 150 yards from the green. The green itself has a pot bunkers front right and run-off areas on the left. The green slopes back to front with lots of subtle breaks. hole 14 – Monument Hole 14 is a short par four with trees either side and fairway bunkers left and right. A good tee shot will leave a short iron into a generous green that has two small bunkers at the front. The green itself has a small shelf at the front, then slopes away to the back. A

real birdie opportunity. hole 15 – Ditch Hole 15 is a mid-length par three with newly renovated bunkers left and right which, if found, provide a strong test of your short game. It is a big green, so club selection is vital. The green itself slopes from back to front, making for a very tricky two-putt from above the hole. Three is a good score here. hole 16 – follingsby Hole 16 is a short par four with two mounds which narrow the fairway right at driving distance, meaning rough awaits a wayward tee shot. There are also two well-placed fairway bunkers both right and left, so accuracy is important here. A good tee shot will leave a short iron into a tricky green. The green itself is an undulating surface meaning a tricky read from all positions. You’ll also find a well-placed pot bunker right awaiting any short approach shots. A tricky twoputt if you’re on the wrong side.
hole 17 – long Pull Hole 17 is a strong par four into a prevailing wind with trees right and left, but don’t worry the fairway is generous. Once you’ve hit your tee shot the fun begins. There is a ditch 70 yards from the front of the green, and two bunkers at the front of this narrow three-tiered green which, depending where the pin is, can be a very tricky two-putt. Adrian spent the next 14 years at Boldon before leaving in 2001 to start Marshalls Golf at Heworth with his brother, PGA Professional Warren Marshall.
Warren Marshall Warren joined the pro ranks aged 16 qualifying aged 23. He was assistant to Steve McNally for over 5 years before trying his luck on the regional tour for 3 years. He then spent 8 years as Head Teaching Professional at Washington, a further year at Boldon, before joining Adrian for the launch of Marshalls Golf in 2001. Adrian (left) and Warren (right).

The junior section here at Heworth is a vibrant, fun and social section with members of all ages and abilities. There is very much a family feel and everyone involved is both supportive and Joiningencouraging.HeworthGolf
Primary school-aged juniors can join for only £15 and secondary schoolaged children for just £50. Junior coaching –The academy coaching programme under the leadership of Bryan Ross has been running since 2014. Bryan is a fully qualified and well-respected golf coach, with a passion for growing the game at grassroots level. Our junior sessions are very well established and attended, with many young golfers of mixed abilities coming along on a regular basis to take part in a range of fun and engaging golf activities.
Children of all abilities are welcome and interested parents or juniors should contact Bryan directly for more information on our junior section and Duringcoaching.the summer months coaching takes place across the golf club’s various practice facilities, and in the winter we organise social practice sessions which takes place at a local driving range on a subsidised basis.
