MODERNISM

1

5

Modernism is an art movement that described the type of art work that was being produced during the 18th century up until the early 20th century. Artists that produced work around this time period, showed in their pieces that they used the natural world to inspire their work. This is shown in the work with the used of landscapes, mostly of the western world, people and object. This was due to the industrial revolution in Europe, with the rise of industrial factories and mills which carved through the countrysides and took the beauty away from the landscapes. The modernist era included a wide variety of different styles of work being produced. This was due to the rise in different art movements like Cubism, Fauvism, De Stijl and Surrealism.

Modernism

Cubism Movement that showed 3D objects in 2D form, with multiple perspectives. Founded by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in the early 19 hundreds.

Fauvism A movement that uses vigorous brush strokes that creates a raised paint texture. Atists include Henri Matisse and Andre Durain.

Surrealism Surrealism explored the human mind of subconcious. Images created are formed from dreams or based around the human anatomy. Rene Magritte was a main artists of the movement.

Dadaism Dada was a movement that was not afraid to ask questions of art, society and typeography. Founded by Tristan Tzara.

De Stijl A movement that was influenced by the Bauhaus and focused on primary colours and shapes. Most famous work is by Piet Mondrian.

POST MODERNISM

9

Post-modernism is described as an era that was made up of art movements that challenged modernism and aspects of life that developed after the modernist period. Post-modern artists used styles that modernists created to use it against them to contradict the statement they made in modernism. Artists in this era used collage and brought an area of simplification to their work. A number of art movements create the foundation of post-modern art that include; Installation art, conceptual art, pop art, minimalism, digital art, Lowbrow and Performance art.

Post Modernism

Minimalism A movement that communicates using shapes and images in their simplest form, whilst using block colours.

Pop Art Pop Art focused o the popular culture of the sixties, using celebritiees, companies and newspapers to make imagery that spoke to people of that era.

Conceptual Art Movement that asks question of modern day culture as well as being personal experiences from artists. Work is normally presented as installations.

Installation Art Art that is 3-dimentional and what is called site specific, that plays with the perception of a place or surrounding.

Digital Art Art that is made using digital software like Photoshop or After Effects.

TYPE TRANSCRIPTION

1

13

The brief for Type Transcription was to create a typeface that was inspired by an artists work from a number of examples. The typeface I have created was inspired by the work of El Lissitzky. I used circles, rectangles and curved lines coloured as red, to relate to El Lissitzky’s work. I chose to use lower case letters because some of the artists work was influence by the bauhaus and after looking into the bauhaus, artists were pushed into using lower case letters rather than upper case. I really enjoyed creating a typeface because I didn’t realise how easy it was just to take little aspects of someones work and use it to make typography.

CITY IN FLUX

1

17

City in Flux was the first studio breif that I recieved. The concept behind the brief was to show observations of change throughout a city. I focused my research on Leeds because it is a city that I know and was close by. As I was taking photographs and observing the landscapes around the city, I realised that the city itself is described as one thing but they are aspects of the location that are avoided topics. These include subjects like homelessness, littering, crime etc. After taking inspiration from an image from pinterest, I began creating ideas using words as images.

For my final pieces I created a small A6 book filled with some of my poster designs. From this I took three designs and printed them on matte paper. The concept behind my final outcomes was, that every city is advertised as a lovely place and the nice parts of a place are emphasised when spoken about. However, behind all of those positive points, there is negative parts too. These are tended to have been forgotten until it clearly stands out to someone. My posters are designed to open peoples eyes and show that this is what a modern day city is made up of and that times have changed.

EARTH ARTEFACT

1

21

Earth Artefact was the name of the second studio brief of the year. The project was based around the Golden Record voyager mission that took place in 1977. To fit the brief I had to create a way of visually communicating to someone who has never been to planet earth or heard of anything to do with humans and the way we live. To help create ideas I began looking at the Golden record and other missions like the pioneer plaque, to see what sort of content that has been included in the missions to comunicate between ourselves and extra terrestrials.

For my final idea I chose to create a leaflet to advertise planet earth. I chose this because when humans go to certain places like a landmark, leaflets are always around with maps and tourist attractions. I wanted my design to be different to other leaflet designs so it was unique. I chose an A6 design that opens up into a final map of the world with cities and landmarks like deserts. The leaflet also shows the seven wonders of the world, as I feel they are a big part of the earths history. I used blue as a colour to relate to the earths colour in space too. This worked well with white text over the top with a welcome massage from people of earth.
