EDITOR’S LETTER

It is a celebratory time of year. Whether it is a Thanksgiving full of family around the table or a destination Christmas, the holiday season is always festive.

We have amazing stories to help create and inspire that merry feeling. Aerin Lauder shares a few tips for that perfect soiree on page 86.

Michael Giannelli, owner of East Hampton Gardens and the go to des tination for designers, shares 3 major holiday decorating trends for 2022 on page 84.

For a little grown up glamour Joanna Bu chanan inspires us on creating instant impact for your holiday table page 79. And Laura Park who’s flag ship store is in Charlotte, gets us par ty ready on page 91.

One of my favorite holiday traditions is Christmas Stroll on Nantucket. We would kick off the season with Thanksgiving on the is land, where I would make my famous butter nut squash soup. The lighting of the Christmas trees is always the Friday after Thanksgiving creating a very special scene. For me this is the official start to the season. Christmas Stroll follows, which is on the first weekend in December. The town is abuzz. There is a wonderful house tour, all the shops are open, offering a little holiday cheer. After a full day in town enjoying the shops, the food and Santa’s arrival, we conclude the day with libations at the Jared Coffin House Tap Room. Christmas Stroll on Nan tucket is special, and it is truly a great family experience.

Margaret Bastick Luce takes us to Newport and the Ocean House in Rhode Island in her column “ If You Haven’t, You Should” on page 40.

Kelly Delaney Kot talks to one of the hottest designers Jan Haedrich on page 64. If you are not already following her instagram @ilovemme.mink, you will love her aesthetic.

This issue is full of gift ideas from beginning to end as well as staying healthy throughout the season. The Power of Food by Marci Moreau on page 58 offers a wonderful recipe, we will be adding this decadent dark chocolate cranberry sauce to our menu this year.

Cheers to a happy and healthy holiday Colleen

A PERSONAL VIEW ON HIGH FASHION & STREET STYLE:

Photographs from the Nicola Erni Collection, 1930s to Now.

THROUGH FEBRUARY 12, 2023

Exploring fashion and street style photography through the eyes of Swiss collector and patron Nico la Erni, who has built one of the most important pri vate collections of fashion photography. For the first time this comprehensive collection of more than 250 photographs is being presented in a public in stitution.

Alongside high fashion photography, originally created for editorial and commercial projects by famous photographers such as Richard Avedon, Tina Barney, Guy Bourdin, Arthur Elgort, Hiro, Horst P. Horst, Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, Tyler Mitchell, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, Cindy Sherman, Albert Watson, and Esther Haase, street style photography will also be on view. This photographic genre, noted for its candid and spontaneous ap proach to capturing everyday people in their daily, urban lives, is document ed in the work of renowned artists such as Harry Callahan, Lee Friedlander, Anthony Hernandez, Helen Levitt, Garry Winogrand as well as Bill Cunning ham and Scott Schuman (The Sartorialist), amongst others.

Rather than showing the works chronologically, High Fashion & Street Style looks at the binding themes and synergies that run through the photo graphs, dividing the ex hibition into twelve sec tions such as The New Look, Fiction & Fantasy, Unreal, or Unfiltered. In addition to the main sections, High Fashion & Street Style includes backstage material from the world of fashion including portraits of era-defining models and designers that shaped our view of beauty and clothes from the 1930s to the present day. The exhibition will present rare vintage prints, large-format photographs, Pola roids, and original collages.

It is a strongly personal exhibition, which reflects Nicola Erni’s close rela tionship with a great number of artists. A substantial number of prints are unique and were especially produced for the Nicola Erni Collection or commis sioned by her. - Norton www.norton.org

INSIDE OUT BEAUTY

There is cause for excitement, ladies (and gentlemen); Dr. Miron has landed in Jupiter. Moving from Sarasota, we are thrilled to welcome the affable Dr. Miron and his staff to Palm Beach County. Moving to the area to hang out with the age-defying beauties of South Florida, they certainly have cre ated an exquisite facility in Three Palms Plaza. A true gem, I recommend him to all my girlfriends, and side note to men, they are doing wonders with PRF and hair loss. Rest assured, you are in excellent care at Care Aesthetics.

I would be remiss in sharing more without adequately in troducing you to Dr. Richard Miron. This internationally rec ognized clinician helped pioneer several concepts related to blood concentrates (PRP/PRF), their related protocols, and their potential health benefits over standard materials avail able today. The pioneer of the Bio-PRF system utilizing his technology. Sharing knowledge gained from years in Switzer land, he generously educates clinicians, doctors, and facial estheticians worldwide about the latest clinical practices and medical research for facial rejuvenation.

Providing a wide variety of skin rejuvenation procedures for his select clients, perusing the menu of the Care Esthetics website will leave you wanting to sample all the offerings. From the moment I stepped into this unique oasis, my choice was the Bio-Care facial rejuvenation. The lovely staff greeted me; I quickly felt like I was among friends at a beautiful new spa. The Doctor and his medical assistant, Lauren, immediately put me at ease.

As my friends know, I vere toward natural approaches in every thing I do. The specialized natural treatments that are handcrafted to cater to your needs indeed leave you feeling cared for every step of the way. The added benefit of staving off the inevitable facelift is one reason to run, not walk into Care Esthetics. Consistently cu rious, I was fascinated to learn that PRF, or platelet-rich fibrin is a form of blood plasma with a high concentration of platelets. The process is literally delivered from the inside out. Well, do I have your attention?

HOW TO LOVE YOURSELF: IN LESS THAN A WEEK & ALSO FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE

IF YOU HAVEN’T, YOU SHOULD

In this issue, I want to bring you bold and benign experiences, luxe, and leisure from Newport, Rhode Island. Join me on a journey back in time to areas long since passed from my childhood because if you haven’t, you should...

TRAVEL:

An easy jump from West Palm to Boston, where a long-time friend swept me up from Logan Airport. Instantly I was transported from Boston to Sweet Berry Farms in Middleton, Rhode Island. With fresh juice on my mind, I was drawn to the warm chicken curry soup, delicious. Continuing to the Viking Hotel for a quick check-in before grabbing a bike, all the while wondering if I would recognize the flat I stayed in so many years ago during the Claus von Bülow Trial. And, more reminiscent of the time, staying the night for the first time on a waterbed. Hmmm, I wonder where that flat is.

I was thrilled to catch a match on the final weekend of Polo. With a smaller and quainter venue, proper table settings, and an authentic coun try feel, it was the most enjoyable spot to watch the horses and partake of some great shopping. After a full day, I capped the evening with a cozy dinner fireside at The Vanderbilt. Following dinner, I smiled while ob serving the local backdrop, historic buildings, cobblestone streets, youth, and elders. I began to giggle as I wondered if Paul Revere and the Headless Horseman

were to round the corner; three firemen sitting outside enjoying dinner found my giggle quite captivating.

On a whirlwind second day, I couldn’t depart Newport before a visit to St. Mary’s Church, where Jackie O. and John F. Kennedy were married. To stay warm, I made a brief stop for a delicious, frothy oat milk latte at Empire Coffee, then onto the Automobile Museum, where I noted the Exhibit featuring 1990 autos. Prompting a smile, there she was amongst the collection, the yellow Saab Turbo I often borrowed from an old boyfriend. The old world Tennis Hall of Fame is a must-stop to see the beautiful grass courts. Famished, I welcomed the invitation to a late lunch at the Private Club on Bailey’s Beach before my last stop at the Boat Show. I stopped by to see what Palm Beach local IYC had and felt quite at home sitting on the yacht. Off I went to Westerly, where I concluded my final two days at the Ocean House, a Relais & Châteaux property reminiscent of the Irish Seaside. A pause to appreciate the manicured croquet lawns, beautiful art, and lovely staff. All by myself, I had plenty of time to ponder my youth and experiences, and I truly felt my Irish ancestors calling me.

10 TIPS TO NAVIGATE THE HOLIDAY SEASON

“The holidays are an exciting time of year, but can also be stressful,” shares holistic nutritionist Sarah Wragge. “Not only are we busy with work and taking care of our families, we’re also planning time with our extended families, searching for those perfect presents, and attending holiday events. Let’s take the stress of poor eating temptations off your plate with my Top 10 Healthy Tips to Navigate Through the Holiday season.”

Sarah Wragge Wellness (SWW) is a holistic nutri tion and wellness company teaching others how to eat for optimal health and energy, lose weight effortlessly, and enjoy the foods they love. Sarah and her team of experts have coached thousands of clients following the SWW Method- a specific formula created to teach clients how to burn fat efficiently, eliminate sugar cravings and stay satiated between meals.

Sarah spent most of her youth in and out of doctor’s of fices with chronic digestive and health issues. She suffered from major inflammation throughout her body and doctors were quick to prescribe every antacid under the sun. In her late 20's she was introduced to a holistic nutritionist and made the connection between the foods she was eating and her symptoms. By simply changing her diet, the health is sues she battled her whole life had disappeared.

In 2011, Sarah began sharing her knowledge with her ad vertising clients through a movement The New York Times called "sweat-working" where she took clients to workout classes such as Soul Cycle and grew her work relationships over green juices instead of cocktails and heavy steak din ners. This was the inspiration for Sarah Wragge Wellness.

"Over the past eleven years, SWW has become one of the fastest growing wellness companies with a unique ability to cut through the barrage of health, diet, and wellness trends and separate fact from fiction. Our coaches deliver the es sential nutritional information everyone needs to know in a digestible way,” shares Sarah.

TOP 10 TIPS TO NAVIGATE THROUGH THE HOLIDAY SEASON

STICK TO CELEBRATORY DRINKS. Save your alcohol intake for celebrations or for the weekend. Pick your number of drinks you allow yourself and stick to that number. This allows you to look forward to your drinks and stay on track.

4PM MINI MEAL. Before heading out, make an SWW smoothie or have a protein-packed snack as a way to prevent over-eating when you are out.

REVIEW MENU IN ADVANCE. It can be difficult to avoid eating out during the holidays. Review the menu ahead of time so you know the options you're working with to make a healthy decision.

TAKE A DIGESTIVE ENZYME. When you indulge during the holidays, take a digestive enzyme post eating to help break down what you have con sumed and keep your digestion on track.

KEEP CALM. Stress levels run high around the holidays. Check in with yourself to calm your nerves. Stress causes cortisol levels to rise, creating weight gain and a sluggish metabolism. Schedule time for your self and practice deep breathing to level your cortisol and pre vent blood sugar from spiking.

CHOOSE ALCOHOL WISELY. Keep your booze light and clear with the least amount of acidity and sugar. We recom mend tequila that’s low in acidity and has minimal sugar. Try club soda and fresh lime juice as an easy mixer for your cocktail.

CHOOSE YOUR INDULGENCES. These indulgences may include dessert (1), alcohol (2) and carbs (3). Choose 1 or 2 to enjoy, but NOT all three at your holiday party or dinner out.

HYDRATE. (water) throughout the day. This will help you avoid dehydration, regulate your digestion and alkalize the body. It also will prevent you from snacking on holiday cookies and other sugary treats.

MOVEMENT. The best way to avoid blood sugar spikes when consuming too many simple carbs is to move your body. Go for a brisk walk with your family and take in the holiday scenes.

HEALTHY WISHLISTS. Stick to providing your kids and loved ones with presents that benefit their health. They could be toys centered on sports, a WHOOP band for monitoring your health, or a spa gift certif icate for self-care.

A NEW CHAPTER

The power of face oils, a skin narrative, and a “less is more” approach to winter beauty Biography—a sustainable brand focused on craft, efficacy, and acceptance—approaches natural beauty in a way that’s far from boring.

When Linda Thompson left a career in luxury brands to pur sue her entrepreneurial dreams, she had a simple vision: shift ing the conversation about what beauty means.

“The people who made up the community that formed around what was a novel idea at the time were far more interesting to me than the formulas themselves,” Thompson says. “I found beauty in people’s stories, which goes deeper than what we see on the surface.”

“Our oils are pared down to active potent concentrations so you don’t need a complex expensive cluttered counter of prod ucts,” Thompson says. “Even our tubes can be repurposed be cause they’re not only sturdy but also attractive and artful.”

“Of course, we want to treat our skin with love and high-qual ity products, but we do not believe that narrative should be the focus in your life,” Thompson says. “You have way more inter esting things to do. Taking the limelight away from those sur face-level things opens the floor to create an interesting brand and community that people want to be a part of.”

“Transitioning to colder weather means a drop in humidity and increased radiator interior heat. This all spells dry skin and lips.”

1. Schedule a micro-needling treatment to boost collagen production and keep your skin clear of excess sun pig mentation.

2. Use a slightly exfoliating, moisturizing cleansing balm two or three times a week for your evening cleansing.

COLLAGEN 101

MEET HECH / THE NEXT GENERATION OF BEAUTY NUTRITION

In the spirit of the beauty industry’s latest fixation, take a peek inside the family-founded company that has reimagined full-body wellness for half a century—with its versatile, ingestible collagen supplements.

CAVIAR COLLAGEN RUBY ELIXIER AMPOULES

Ideal before sleep, after a workout, or alongside a beauty program.

VEGAN PRO-COLLAGEN AMPOULES

Designed to be taken daily during a period of rest.

CHERRY BLOSSOM MARINE COLLAGEN SACHETS

Dissolved in liquid, these sachets provide a nutrient-dense evening wind down.

HAIR & NAILS COMPLEX CAPSULES

Intended as a daily supplement, and can be incorporated into a travel wellness lineup.

CAVIAR COLLAGEN CAPSULES

Can be used as small nutrient reservoirs to fortify meals and smoothies.

WHAT IS HECH?

A pioneer in functional and beauty nutrition, HECH was es tablished in the 1970s by Eberhard and Gertrud Heidrich. The pair shared a family heritage of herb cultivation and handcraft manufacturing—as well as years of their own research and ex perimentation.

“My father has always treated the development of nutrition products much like weaving a luxurious piece of cloth, creating a wonderful chef’s recipe, or developing wines—where the sum and interplay of ingredients, combined with craftsmanship and passion, lead to a superior product the customers can experi ence,” Current HECH Owner Rolf Heidrich says. “It’s about the quality, source, and amount of an ingredient.”

Today, the founding family’s legacy has blossomed into a nutrition business with a passion for developing products that extend far beyond basic supplements. The company’s evolution

was heavily inspired by Rolf Heidrich’s studies in Japan in the 1990s, where he noticed the strong consumer history of ma rine-sourced collagen products in the country’s beauty indus try. Rolf Heidrich adds that, “combining that learning with our family commitment to craftsmanship, technology, and science” was a natural path of advancement for the brand..

Featured in magazines like Vogue and Forbes, HECH is cur rently a market leader in the luxury beauty and advanced nutrition segment in Asia and Europe.

WHY INGESTIBLE COLLAGEN?

Skin is the body’s largest organ. It protects the body from environmental influences, and communicates vitality, beauty, and age. While topical beauty products are beneficial, ingestible collagen provides the building blocks—layer by layer—to com plement those treatments on a more cellular level.

46 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com HEALTH

& BEAUTY

After consumption, collagen is split into smaller peptide frag ments and free amino acids as it passes through the small intes tine. These proteins are then absorbed by the bloodstream and supplied to deeper layers of the skin.

WHY MARINE COLLAGEN?

All HECH formulations are created with marine collagen, derived from fish. The brand’s production technology—in easi ly-dissolvable capsules—provides collagen in small, high-density peptides. These high-density peptides are highly compatible with human collagen, and very effective in reducing signs of aging.

WHAT’S NEW

THE RESULT

With a balance of science, premium nutrients, and cutting-edge technology—like freeze-drying, biotechnical fermentation, and high-density encapsulation—it’s no wonder the brand has solid results and raving reviews.

But that’s not the full extent of the HECH promise.

“Our commitment is focused on the needs of customers who are looking for uncompromising products they can trust, feel, and physically experience,” Rolf Heidrich says. “Nothing motivates us more than when we receive delighted feedback—again, not any different from any proud family rooted in craftsmanship.”

HOW AND WHY TO BE A MONEY QUEEN!

rowing up in the 80s was a much differ ent time than today. It is fun watching retro shows like Cobra Kai and Stranger Things come into the so cial and cultural landscape. Ma donna was the ultimate 80’s super star who sang about living in a material world and I am a material girl. We all grew up with this is our psyche and Gordon Geekco, “Greed is Good” from Wall Street. We knew fast times, fast cars and materialism. No one ever talked about how to get money, make money or grow money. Especially us females. It was not on our agenda of topics.

My undergraduate degree was in teaching. Instead of teaching history, I decided to teach money. Money seems like a much more interesting and practical topic to teach. My dad taught me about money growing up and I didn’t know that was uncommon. My favorite line was, who doesn’t want more money? I started my own firm after working on wall street for 15 years. After

Gdecades in the business I realized wow there is hardly any women here. I had this ah-ha moment when I was at an industry conference and I walked right into the bathroom and the line was out the door for the men. I was so shocked I took a picture of it. How many times have you seen that?

I was already working with a majority of women but this is when I know this industry is underrepresented by women and for women. It turns out it is 80/20. 20 being the females according to the CFP Board. This is when I honed in on my passion for teaching women about money. About 7 years in I went through a hor rific divorce. I know they all are but this was a worse than most. I had to fight for my life, my business, my sanity for 4 years and over $250,000 later survived. This set the stage for me to educate women on the pitfalls of mastering this money thing. If I hadn’t, I don’t think I would have come out on the other side of my divorce. Here is my wish for all of you. I want you to be financially literate, be able to support yourself and be free to choose your life path. Sounds fantastic right?

THE POWER OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Dear Marci,

I love the holidays. It’s my favorite time of year but I eat too much of the wrong foods and I gain weight, mess up my gut, I am always exhausted, stressed, and could be happier. Then there are so many social gatherings and they all include food, lots of it, and it is really easy to start eating more of the bad stuff and then I can’t stop. How do I survive the holidays with my health and my gut intact? Please help!

Looking for more Holiday Cheer

Dear Looking for More Holiday Cheer,

Have faith, the holidays can still be the most wonderful time of year. The twinkling lights, the nostalgic music, and the family traditions and celebrations are all evocative, often transporting us back to our childhood. For me, I’m remembering the week long preparation for our Feast of Seven Fishes celebration on Christmas Eve.

My mother would cook for the entire week; soaking the salt cod for the baccala cakes, in water to remove the excess salt so they would be perfect, and stuffing fresh clams, cleaning the smelts, and, in a small cast iron pan, one by one, she would hand make the pasta shells for the manicotti, because, when you are Italian you always need a side of pasta. “Sharing good food is the greatest gift, it makes people happy,” she would tell me as she filled the pasta shells with homemade ricotta. Our kitchen was the family hub during the holiday season. It smelled like love and I never wanted to leave.

But even the most wonderful time of year does not feel so fes tive when our gut is messed up and we are tired and sad. And let’s face, as much as Norman Rockwell painted the picture per fect holiday, in reality, there is a lot of stress related to the tra ditions, festivities, and the cultural and family obligations. All of us, no matter what we celebrate during the season, soon realize,

the impact the holiday season can have on our bodies and minds.

But when you believe in the power of food, you can begin to understand how to use food to support your body during times of stress, and quite simply, how to be healthier, happier, and yes, even much more festive.

Especially during the holidays when food is abundant, time is not, and it is a lot more difficult to find the right balance, it is helpful to have a strategy that includes go-to foods to calm the physical and mental impact the holiday chaos can have on our our bodies and minds. To start, focus on eating healthy and use the 80/20 rule, eating high quality foods with the optimal nu tritional profile 80% percent of the time, and allowing for some wiggle room for the desired treats 20% of the time. Try to keep portion sizes reasonable, alcohol consumption limited, and re member to to eat your healthy fats, complex carbs and protein. Protein will stabilize your cravings for the wrong foods, keep your insulin levels more consistent, and sustain your body for a longer period, making it easier to participate in holiday festivi ties without overdoing it.

And since the holidays is all about the the spirit of giving, my Dark Chocolate Cranberry Sauce is the perfect gift for more hol iday cheer and much, much, more power.

Starting with chocolate and cranberries, the nutritional base of this recipe delivers all you need to help your gut, your energy level, and your emotional well-being. Especially dark chocolate, with a much higher level of antioxidants and magnesium then milk chocolate, it can help to regulate and stabilize mood, de crease anxiety and depression, and make us feel more calm and centered. Adding the cranberries intensifies the benefits and, just like cranberries are great for getting rid of the bacteria in our urinary tract, they also put good bacteria back into our gut, keeping our digestive system healthy and strong during the hol iday season.

TASTE

I’m feeling extra festive this year, so I’ve added ginger root and turmeric root to this recipe. The curcumin in turmeric, and gingerol in ginger, are natural anti-inflammatories and have significant medicinal properties, all of them great for improv

ing our physical and mental health any time of the year. This Dark Chocolate Cranberry Sauce is pure magic so, in honor of my mother’s words, make extra, and share this with the people you love. It will make them very happy!

DARK CHOCOLATE

• 1/2 cup organic agave

SAUCE

• 1/3 cup organic unsweetened dark cacao powder

• 1 cup organic cream

• 1 cinnamon stick

• 1 vanilla bean

• 2 ounces organic dark chocolate, chopped

• 1/2 cup cranberry ginger puree

• 1 tsp freshly ground sea salt

Combine first 3 ingredients in a small saucepan over low heat and whisk until blended.

Slice open vanilla bean, scrape seeds and add seeds and entire pod to pan with one whole cinnamon stick. Stir constantly, bring ing to a low boil on stovetop. Reduce heat, and simmer, for about 2 minutes and then remove from heat, adding dark chocolate and cranberry ginger puree, stirring until sauce is smooth. Let sit for at least thirty minutes for the cinnamon and vanilla beans to infuse and then remove cinnamon stick and vanilla pod, stir, and sprinkle with sea salt. Serve warm or at room temperature.

• 1 1/2 cups fresh cranberries

• 1 cup water

• 2 TBS freshly grated ginger root

• 2 TBS freshly grated turmeric root

• 1 TBS pure vanilla

• sprinkle of black pepper

In a small sauce pan bring cranberries and water to a slow boil. Lower heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Add ginger root, turmeric root and vanilla and simmer on low for 10 minutes more, remove from heat let cool for 10 minutes. Puree in food processor until blended and then add a sprinkle of black pepper. The black pepper allows for absorption of the nutritional benefits of the turmeric.

Tell us about the history of your stately home in Wiscasset, Maine?

: Our home is located on the beautiful coast of Maine and known to many as the WOOD-FOOTE House. Built in 1811, it was truly a statement of elegance and prestige demon-strative of the wealthy ship merchant, Abiel Wood, before the shipping embargo of 1812. When the house was built, Maine had yet to be officially named as a state but in stead still known as Massachusetts. I absolutely love the patina, charm and stateliness of old world architecture. Our house is everything I'd hope to find to make as home for my

What drew you to living in Maine?

On a trip from Boston the week of 9/11, my husband Todd and I decided to leave the city driving north to Maine. As we reached the midcoast we stopped for coffee and on a detour, we happened upon the house which at the time had been vacant for nearly 15 years and we were sold. Maine became my home base as well as the official MME.MINK's head quarters, and I do all of my designing from my home studio. Maine is the perfect location to reach the rest of the world. A short distance from Boston, a quick flight to New York and only 6 hours to Europe. I adore New England and will always call it home.

LUX: How long did the restoration project take and what was the greatest challenge?

JAN: As the home had not been lived in for over a decade, it needed everything! A new roof, new electrical, new plumbing and there was no heat. Ceilings had collapsed. But it had good bones. I had never taken on a restoration project, but had a vision and I knew this was the place we needed to save. When one takes on a project this large, you never ever know what is in store! The task never ends for improvements. Initially to get it livable, it took over a year. However. restorations continue even to this day. I told my husband when we first saw the house, "This is where we will have our children." Of course, he thought I was joking. But quickly realized, that this dream would soon be a wonderful reality. We now have three children, and a sweet black Lab named Bordeaux. They adore our home and we are blessed with so many memories here.

LUX: Share a fun fact which you have learned about WOOD-FOOTE House?

JAN: It's grand Federal Style was a huge construction in its day with eleven fireplaces, ten bedrooms, and over 10,000 sqft of living space. It was the home to Maine's first at torney general and its first female author. After its completion a “fireboy” was placed in charge of maintaining heat for the house. During the summer, his job was to collect all the wood to keep the fireplaces going throughout the winter months. As you may know, Maine winters are cold and long. He would have had a huge job keeping eleven fireplaces ablaze.

68 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com STYLE

LUX: Do you have a favorite room in the home?

JAN: I actually have two! Our grand rooms - one is named Louis XIV and the other is The Napoleon Room. Each room is decorated with a modern French twist including art and sculptures of each aristocrat that I have found along my travels in France, Rome and Maine. During the French Revolution, French sympathizers in Wiscasset launched a res cue plan to save Marie Antoinette from prison before she was beheaded. In fact, folklore says, there was a house in town that was built for her to escape to and become her new home. During this time, several items from Marie Antoinette's home were brought back to Maine including a bed, armoire, fine furnishings, and even one of her Persian cats. His tory made the final word to her fate, but still today, Wiscasset is known for its luxurious antique stores. This great story and my strong affinity for French antiquities inspired me to name our two grand rooms after Louis XIV and Napoleon.

LUX: Your home has many elegant details, share a few of your personal favorites?

JAN: I was told while working with contractors that our house would never be able to be rebuilt in its exact form - simply because its grandeur breaks too many building codes. Ha! There are several aspects about it that I adore, including the checkerboard floors, which I hand painted myself, the twelve foot ceilings, and beautiful light from the original leaded glass windows. I also covet our French crystal chandeliers and 17th century oil French and Dutch portrait paintings - each with their original gold gilded frames.

LUX: Let's talk fashion. Which MME.MINK items are the most popular right now?

JAN: The Lady Jane Petite, our Garden Dresses, the Carlton straw bag, and the Little Royce.

LUX: The MME.MINK brand is known for its trunk shows at iconic destinations, in cluding: AERIN in Palm Beach, The Ritz Paris, Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. Which is your favorite city to host at?

JAN: I've adored them all but The Ritz Paris in particular was such a dream location having lived in Paris. I find that Parisians truly covet fashion, and the excitement of the young influencers who attended the show was contagious. This summer we will be host ing trunk shows in the Hamptons and Europe, as well as visiting our factories in Italy.

SETTING THE HOLIDAY TABLE WITH JOANNA BUCHANAN

HOME DÉCOR AND ACCESSORIES

Joanna Buchanan known for her unmistakable vision in luxury, color, texture and pattern. Her 20 years in the fashion retail business combined with her Hong Kong childhood, adult years in Europe, and extensive travel in India all influenced and shaped her coveted brand today.

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 79
HEIRLOOM-QUALITY TABLETOP,

WHERE DID YOUR APPROACH TO COLOR, PATTERN AND EMBROIDERY DEVELOP?

Joanna - Growing up I was always creating my own fabric and was super interested with pattern and tech nique on textiles... I remember making a huge tie and dye tablecloth and matching napkins on our small roof in Hong Kong. That love of creating has stayed with me – and I so enjoy exploring new techniques and trying things that our factories and artisans have not tried be fore. I love juxtapositions and do NOT love anything that feels too matched or themed....

Everyday I am looking for color play and internalising everything I see – I may not recall the exact name and place of date night...but if there was a mood or visual in that restaurant that I liked,... it will be locked in my memory bank for future use!

I have always loved surface pattern and much of it is very instinctive...I truly appreciate the idiosyncrasies of hand touched/created products. As I have gotten older I find it easier to determine and define what feels ‘mass’ and what looks ‘designed’. That’s very important to me –our collection is all designed by me and whilst there is so much available to ‘source’, we never go down that path.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL WAS THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON YOUR DESIGN AESTHETIC GROWING UP IN HONG KONG?

Joanna - The love of glamour and sparkle is prevalent in everyday life in Hong Kong and that had a huge im pact on my visual language. What’s interesting is when you contrast that with my equal love of grand but shabby old English homes... I think that’s where the unique aes thetic of Joanna Buchanan comes into play. Perfect gloss mixed with perfect quirky!

WERE THERE ANY OTHER TRAVELS THAT INSPIRED YOUR COLLECTION AND MADE A LASTING IMPACT ON YOUR STYLE?

Joanna - I have a huge passion for India and adore traveling there... the unexpected color combinations are everywhere you look. I worked for an Indian textile com pany for four years and understand what is possible to create on a loom which really helps the creative process.

Indian pattern and embroidery is a recurring theme in my design...But I don’t want things to look too ethnic – so we will take a traditional pattern and print on linen instead of cotton and add a gold trim, for example...or a traditional Indian embroidery technique and pop it into a bee motif ...then its glamorous enough to be JB.

The markets there are such an amazing feast – I al ways buy snips of ribbon, vintage fabrics colored threads to bring home and work with in my studio in the gar den... so the juxtaposition of worlds is very real!

YOUR LOVE FOR GARDENING WEAVES ITS WAY THROUGH YOUR DESIGNS WITH THE BEAUTIFUL BEE COLLECTIONS AND MANY MORE. WHEN AND HOW WAS THIS LOVE CULTIVATED?

Joanna - My parents had a summer home in England and neither of them were particularly interested in the garden but I saw a blank canvas for creation!

I was out there during the summer holidays digging beds and asking Mum to drive me to the garden centre for plants... I was probably ten years old... and I loved weeding and edging and keeping everything immacu late! Learning what liked being where, eagerly waiting for the next year to see what had grown...it is a lifelong love and if I could, I would be outside working every day!

When I moved to London and then New York, that passion had to take a back seat but now we are in Con necticut – we have three wonderful acres to plant. I am always so inspired by the ‘moods’ of other people’s gar dens and everyone who comes to our garden always says they feel transported to England. I love deep messy beds and a mix of plantings...no straight lines here! Except for my topiaries which are an eternal work in progress!

WHEN YOU ARE AT HOME, WHERE DO YOU DO MOST OF YOUR ENTERTAINING?

Joanna - We love outdoor entertaining in the summer –we have a lot of friends with children and they love to run about outside – it just makes everything so fun and casual. In the fall, I so enjoy setting a beautiful table and making things a little more sophisticated. We have a lovely bright dining room with high ceilings, so in fall, I dim the lights and light the candles and create a super cosy and moody vibe.

WHAT WILL BE THE DESIGN FOCUS OF YOUR HOLIDAY TABLE THIS YEAR?

Joanna - We are only talking about grown up glamour this Christmas.... we are banishing all things childlike!!

Our new capiz trees are the most exciting way to decorate

your holiday table – they are instant “impact” and such a stunning centerpiece. I will be building greenery and florals around the trees as they give the best structural starting point for any concept or color scheme you want to create.

So we will all enjoy fabulous extravagant tables and also our new celebration crackers. They are such a fun way to get the party started... crowns, riddles, games and gorgeous Joanna Buchanan sparkling gifts inside! Our reviews are fantastic and I can’t wait for the new sets to ship!

YOU SEEM TO ENTERTAIN SO EFFORTLESSLY DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR THE REST OF US?

Joanna - Plan and prep – very little in life is truly effortless!

3 MAJOR HOLIDAY DECORATING TRENDS FOR 2022

Michael Giannelli, owner of East Hampton Gardens shares this years 3 major holiday decorating trends. Michael knows a thing or two about creating the perfect visual ex perience. In his previous career in fashion merchandising and branding, Michael worked in management roles, overseeing the cre ative direction of top brands. His experience ranges from merchandising to managing large staffs to conceptualizing new visions for global brands such as the Gap to Victoria’s Secret. We asked Michael where this years trends will take us. Here are his top 3.

WOODLAND WONDERLAND

Here we use natural elements that bring the outdoors inside. A large quirky tree with plenty of branches for ornaments that are burnished and have patina. Large magnolia branches in vases used on console tables or mantles. Mixed garlands of pine, cedar, and magnolia draped on the stair case. A large wreath of pine cones, large & small, mixed with juniper berries. A large bow of shim mering organza finishes it off. Beautiful birds of all varieties are tucked into the tree, garlands, and wreaths as a surprise element. Garlands are laid on the dining tables With pillar candles, vo tives, glittery dear, and pine cones. Napkins are wrapped with simple jute with greens tucked in.

84 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

This is a winter wonderland of snowy whites and shimmer that brings elegance to your tree, interiors, and tabletop. Frosted trees twinkling with lights, silver garlands, and vintage ornaments are the focus. Antique silver glitter covers pine cones & accents of crystal ici cles, glittery, blown glass ornaments, and faux fur-cov ered Santas are grouped together in a wintery scene. Pastel-colored cottages finished with glitter sparkle un der the tree or placed on a console with antique white & gold miniature trees to set a frosty holiday mood. Take out all your vintage silver pieces and accents and display them around your home filled with ornaments, greens, or candy. Frosted garlands are placed on man tles with crystal and silver candle sticks and everything shimmers in a layer of glitter.

HIGHLAND HOLIDAYS

This is our nod to a classic, More traditional Christmas. A large Classic tree filled with white lights, red, green, and silver beaded garlands, painted plaid ornaments in glass, and Santa’s in all shapes and sizes. candy canes and peppermints in apothecary jars on mantles and tables. Vintage-inspired ornaments to hang in mass on the tree finished with retro tinsel that sparkles. Satin tartan tree skirts and stockings add to the traditional mix. Tartan rib bons are woven in garlands and finish a beautiful wreath layered with greens, pine cones, and winterberry. Our signature red satin bows are placed on boxwood wreaths inside and out, The tails are left long to add drama. Ta bles are set with a mix of heirloom China and grandma’s crystal glasses and napkins are finished with dress pleats and are tucked into silver napkin rings. Boxwood topiaries are placed in small silver containers to add shimmer and reflect the candle glow.

TIPS AND TRADITIONS FOR THROWING A HOLIDAY SOIREE

The ultimate tastemaker Aerin Lauder

When we think of hosting an elegant soiree at home, the first person that comes to mind is Aerin Lauder. Just like her grandmother, Aerin is renowned for hosting fabulous soirées with impeccable taste. Aerin’s name has become synonymous with beau tiful tablescapes where her own lifestyle serves as a focus point of inspiration for her global luxury lifestyle brand.

It goes without saying that Aerin Lauder has been a guest at some of the most glittering of celebrations throughout the years, but she enjoys entertaining just as much at home. We consulted with Aerin and asked for a few of her best tips.

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 87

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS YOU LIKE TO GIFT OTHERS DURING THE HOLIDAYS?

I love giving gifts that feel meaningful and spe cial. If a friend is interested in a certain style of art or fashion, I will gift a beautiful coffee table book about that subject. I also love to gift beautiful picture frames with photographs of special memories, can dles that remind me of inspiring destinations, and of course, chocolates and fragrance.

AS AN ENTERTAINING ICON, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ENTERTAINING TIPS?

The most important thing to remember as a host is to be prepared and relaxed. Guests know when you are stressed or worried. Entertaining should feel effortless, so as a host you can also enjoy the party. Even if everything is not perfect, it is most im portant that guests feel welcome and comfortable.

IS THERE A SIGNATURE COCKTAIL YOU LIKE TO SERVE?

I love serving tequila in beautiful bottles that I have found during my travels.

88 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY MEMORY OF YOUR GRANDMOTHER?

For me, the holiday season has always been filled with family, nostalgia, and wonderful memories. I have loved the holidays since I was a young girl, but my favorite memory is getting up on Christmas morning and opening my stock ing full of candies and surprises with my family. My sister and I would always wake up extra early and run downstairs to the tree in our pajamas. With all of the décor, the parties, the festive fashion, and the time spent with the people I love most, I have always thought of the holidays as absolute magic. Through the years, I have tried to maintain those same traditions with my own children.

PARTY READY

Setting the holiday table with Laura Park

Laura has an affection for color and design. A selftaught artist, her signature patterns are all created from Laura’s original colorful artwork. Laura has exquisite talent in layering her paintings with bold colors and brushstrokes to create unique whimsical abstract designs. The original piece is photographed then created into digital patterns which can then transfer onto textiles. Her array of products includes pillows, wallpaper, lifestyle and home ac cessories, tabletop decor and more!

With her flagship store in Charlotte, N.C. Laura shares how to create the perfect festive dining table.

LAYING THE FOUNDATION.

With so many pops of color how do you like to begin the process of designing the holiday table? Is there a go to foundation you like to use to start the process?

Laura: I always begin with one of our lively tablecloths. Palm Green is one of my favorites because it is so versatile and easy to combine with the rest of our signature patterns. The greens are super flexible with Christmas and Thanksgiving. Dogwood is also a great foundation for layering colors.

TRADITION

A festive table can set the ambiance for the evening. Not only can it set the mood for the evening and be a conversation start er, it can also be a representation of your holiday traditions. What are your holiday table staples?

Laura: When I think holiday meals I immediately think of family gathered around to celebrate and enjoy each other’s com pany. I try to make sure and have seasonal décor to set the tone of whatever we are celebrating. Depending on the holiday, I like to incorporate small decorations like pumpkins for Thanksgiv ing, holly branches for Christmas, confetti for birthdays or other fun trinkets to fill in any gaps in the table setting. No table is complete without a theme!

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 91

INCORPORATE FUNCTIONAL AND BEAUTIFUL.

There is never a better time than a holiday dinner to bring out the ex travagant dinnerware and glassware, polished silver pieces, and a beau tiful collection of heirloom crystal or china. How do you incorporate old school glamour with updated unique design pieces?

Laura: I love the idea of blending elegant heirlooms with the colorful, carefree feel of our designs. I really enjoy the dynamic look and feel you get from mixing colors and patterns as well as layering the old with the new. Of course, I have my old school collection of tabletop décor that I love, but I always try to find that healthy balance so I don’t make the table feel too stiff. For instance, if I’m using my classic crystal glasses, I’ll pair them with our bright melamine plates for an unexpected twist.

BRIGHT SPARKLES

Nows is the time to layer in the big sparkles. Is there a piece de resis tance you like to include on your holiday table?

Laura: Flowers are always at the center of every table I design! I love using a vibrant flower arrangement to pull out the color palettes of our patterns. They can set the tone for the whole event. I really think any ta ble is incomplete without an oversized display of flowers that get people oohing and ahhing. I try to make all my tables so picture-perfect that people can’t help but take out their phones and snap a photo. I think flowers are a big part of making that happen.

FINISHING TOUCHES

What are the little must-haves for the finishing touches on any holiday table?

Laura: I love a good napkin ring for a holiday table. We have great acrylic napkin rings that are perfect for year-round use, but for the hol idays I like to find napkin rings that tastefully reflect the occasion. I like to look at it as the ribbon on a pretty present that ties the whole look together. Little details like that can really elevate your tablescape espe cially when it comes to the holidays.

A FRONT ROW SEAT

IF YOU HAVE ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE EACH CITY AND SHOW, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

“EXCITING“

NYC did not disappoint us; it was thrilling and exciting to see the new collections kicked off right away at NY Fashion Week. Beginning with Fendi’s 25th Anniversary of the Baguette Bag, it was a thrill to see their collaboration with Sarah Jessica Park er. She designed four different Baguette bags in various colors and sequins with detachable buckles for customers to create and personalize their own look. Supermodel Linda Evangelis ta, the face of Fendi, created an extremely special solid sterling silver Baguette. And if that wasn’t enough, the collaboration be tween Kim Jones, Creative Director for Fendi, and Marc Jacobs wowed us with their vision throughout the collection.

A GREAT SIGN WITH BALMAIN BRINGING CHER, DO YOU SEE A TREND THAT IS REACHING FOR THE TRUE FASHION INNOVATORS?

Balmain’s Creative Director Oliver Rousteing made a moment during Paris Fashion Week by bringing Cher onto the Runway. As Cher walked out in a full custom catsuit created just for her by Oliver, we knew this was the Moment of the 2023 shows and what a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be in the room. We also saw this trend with Kim Kardashian’s collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana in Milan. And in those moments, it is evident that creative directors are returning to finding a muse.

I FEEL LUXURY HAS BEEN IN THE BACKGROUND FOR A WHILE SO YOU SEE AN ENTHUSIASTIC RETURN? AND, IS THE GENERAL MOOD ENTHUSIASTIC THAT LUXURY IS BACK?

Fantastic question, and I assure you luxury is back! At Nei man Marcus, we believe in creating unique experiences for our clients and living your luxury in your way. Feeling great in what you love to wear, whether a made-to-measure suit or a piece of Couture, it is all about making every moment feel special. Make your appointment, and let me create those special fashion mo ments for you.

WHAT IS THE VIBE? WHAT DO YOU SEE THE SPEND ON? ONE-OFFS? CUSTOM? LABELS? The trending vibe throughout the shows were dusters… over coats… and embellished jackets, giving you the opportunity to shop your own closet and make something old new again.

WHO DID YOU SEE IN THE FRONT ROW?

Influencers definitely are vital for all brands. Sitting in the Front Row, it was so exciting to be back with clients, the press, and the buyers.

Having the opportunity as a Personal Stylist for Neiman Mar cus to travel from New York to Milan to Paris to be in the cen ter of these extraordinary fashion moments is an unforgettable experience. I am more excited and energized than ever to share these experiences with my clients and bring those fashion mo ments to their lives.

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS

96 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

The annual equestrian fundraiser inspires philanthropy, exceptional showmanship, and a whole lot of heart.

For Neil S. Hirsch—skilled polo ist, visionary CEO, and car ing philanthropist—the word “no” simply wasn’t part of his vocabulary. From Hirsch’s close sup port and involvement with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County to founding the World Championship Equestrian Triathlon as an annual fundraiser, his commitment was un wavering. Obstacles, to the leader and bon vivant who passed away in the summer of 2021, were simply chances to dream bigger.

“In no uncertain terms, Neil declared this would be the biggest charity event,” Widow Dr. Laura DeLuca says. “Initial ly there was pushback. Some felt adding an event to his already-full Boys and Girls Club charity roster would be a detriment to the other events. Neil, per usual, was unphased by naysayers.”

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 97

With a clear vision and the help of Event Chair Kathleen Ga non-Ledsome, Hirsch set to work transforming Ganon-Led some’s small farm triathlon into an annual fundraiser to benefit the Neil S. Hirsch Boys and Girls Club of Wellington. The con cept? A thrilling show with a twist, where onlookers could enjoy top polo, hunter/jumper, and dressage athletes competing—but in equestrian disciplines completely new to their skill set.

“This event shows the limitations of even the most seasoned elite athletes,” DeLuca says. “A rider’s ego is not in the way. For example, Neil loved the thought of his polo teammates competing in dressage. He felt it created newfound respect for opponents, and showed a willingness to learn and try despite limitations in a foreign equestrian sport. He loved the courage it took for the riders to potentially fail on horseback. He loved the success that riders had when they achieved in an alternative discipline.”

DeLuca adds that Hirsch’s commitment to working on him self, and his talents, wisdom, and confidence was a common thread, woven through every aspect of his life. Furthermore, it was a journey he hoped to inspire others to join.

“Neil’s desire to connect the Boys and Girls Club to his eques trian friends was ever present,” President and CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County Jaene Miranda says. “The World Championship Equestrian Triathlon was Neil’s big idea. It exists today because he championed the effort and pulled to gether a great team to execute his vision.”

Since its inception nearly five years ago, the event has raised crucial funds for the Neil S. Hirsch Boys and Girls Club of Wel lington—contributing to healthy meals and a safe environment, as well as support for achievement gaps and social-emotional trauma. The club’s mission is to enable all children to reach their full potential by learning good character, living a healthy lifestyle, and staying on track to graduate with a plan for the future.

98 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com
Nacho Figueras / Neil Hirsh
www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 99

“‘Mr. Neil,’ as the kids called him, wasn’t a silent partner,” Miranda says. “Whether it was dropping in for a visit or mak ing sure every Club family had a turkey for Thanksgiving, Neil’s commitment never wavered. Thanks to his forward thinking and ingenuity, he has left behind an equestrian community that is carrying on his legacy to support the children that need us most.”

Inspired by the founder’s bold approach to life, the World Championship Equestrian Triathlon team has been working to create even more dynamic opportunities for growth. In 2021, they onboarded Erica Hatfield, owner of Eye Candy Farm and Eye Candy Jumpers. With Hatfield’s generosity and incredible equestrian insight, the most recent triathlon garnered nearly $500,000 in donations.

As a newcomer to the event but an admirer of the club’s work, Hatfield says she was initially thrilled to host the festivities at her farm. Following months of lockdown, the laughter and joy of attendees and participants came as a breath of fresh air.

“After all those months of not seeing anyone, I can’t really describe the happiness it brought all of us,” Hatfield says. “I was absolutely hooked on this group of people who brought so much joy to my farm, and now I consider the triathlon to be the major

focus of my Wellington season—after only two years.”

Beyond the excitement of the fundraiser, Hatfield views the partnership as a way for her, and others, to see the meaning of life beyond four walls.

“I don’t consider myself giving a gift to the Boys and Girls Club,” Hatfield says. “I consider them to be giving a gift to me. Although we intend to scale up this event—why not, it’s so much fun—it’s not really about what we do. It’s about all of us coming together, having fun, being happy, and helping the kids.”

Looking forward, Hatfield says the triathlon team is plan ning to get “experimental,” with performances from top riders, a mini-major league show jumping competition, and more op portunities for attendees to interact with their favorite riders. Plus, this year will feature an awards show where donors can sponsor awards of their choice.

“Our ultimate goal is to make the triathlon the event of the Wellington season,” Hatfield says. “And we’ve only just begun down that road.”

The fifth annual World Championship Equestrian Triathlon will take place on February 13 at EyeCandy Land. All event pro ceeds support the Neil S. Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club of Wellington. www.bgcpbc.org

KEEPING UP WITH THE SMITHS

Pops of unexpected color, unique shapes, and moody wallpaper add to the modern flair of this three-story home.

With the bells and whistles of a full-ser vice design firm and the personalized approach of a boutique agency, Lucy and Company offers a unique edge in the world of interiors. Founded in 1999 by Beth ConantKeim, the firm is known for all things bright, original, and oftentimes, funky.

Its visionary’s latest undertaking? A Myers Park home, with plenty of open space for pushing the boundaries. Forget the Joneses, we’re keeping up with the Smiths— Emily and Steve—and their five-bedroom Charlotte res idence.

“I have always broken the so-called ‘rules’ here and there with shapes and scale for a more interesting look,” Beth says. “A little something out of the box. This job was no exception.”

106 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com HAUTE HABITAT

With almost 26 years in the industry, the designer knows a thing or two about making a house a home—even when venturing down an unfamiliar design path. The project was a collaborative effort between Beth, Jones & Hedges Custom Builders, and the builder’s main project manager.

“With this new build, the Smiths had the opportunity to go a completely different di rection style-wise from their previous home,” Beth says.

HAUTE HABITAT

The designer’s interior goals centered around the space being modern, clean, and neutral, with out the coldness that’s often associated with the words ‘sleek’ or ‘modern.’

“While the colors are very cohesive and flow through the entire home, each space has a unique feel filled with dramatic pieces,” Beth says. She adds that some of her favorite elements were the little surprises incorporated in unexpected places throughout each level.

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 107
108 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com HAUTE HABITAT

“Steve’s office and lounge have a darker vibe,” Beth says. “And behind a hidden door appearing to be an art piece is a small speakeasy. Why have such a big storage space when you can house a bar instead?”

But the drama truly begins at the first floor foyer— flanked by darker-colored rooms—with its dramatic floor tile and curved metal stair railing. Beth also created a “Ladies Lounge,” wrapped in dark palm pattern wallpaper and peppered with mismatched furniture pieces, all atop a vintage rug. The breakfast nook features a small corner dining table and a cus tom banquette, studded with a striking overhanging pendant.

Beth specifically designed these areas to be warm and inviting, meant for ‘lingering conversation,’ while the center of the home is brighter, wide open, and perfect for family time.

“The colors and style of this home are very much my own personal aesthetic which is always a fun thing,” Beth says. “After designing some of their spaces it led me to change several things in my own home.”

Having been in the business for well more than two decades, Beth says she’s always reminded of the endless learning opportunities in her line of work.

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 109 HAUTE HABITAT

“With each year and each project, the experience and knowledge become better and better,” Beth says. “I now know what to look out for.”

As for her biggest design tip? “Always take time to recharge and grow in new style and ideas,” Beth says. “There is no better way to do that than to travel and find those inspiring hotels, venues, and destinations for inspiration.”

respite,” shares Kelli. “Our home was aptly named Maple Shade after the three towering Maple trees on the property, which are about one hundred years old. We are nestled within protected farmlands, two polo fields, and a rolling tree farm.” Garden design and home redecorating are Kelli’s passion projects du jour, “I would describe my aesthetic as updated traditional with a touch of Scandinavian influence. I love to mix antiques we have acquired over the years and on my travels with interesting new pieces we source here in the Hamptons. LUX takes readers for a behind the scenes peak at Kelli’s stunning new kitchen renovation, below…

TELL US ABOUT YOUR RECENT KITCHEN RENOVATION?

Kelli: The kitchen renovation was the largest scale project we have taken on at Maple Shade. It took over a year to complete during the pandemic. My husband and I designed the space with the help of Bob Bakes of Bakes & Kropp, and Ian Evans Construction Management, who was our builder. As I write from home every day, my goal was to have garden views from every vantage point of the kitchen and dining area, thus bring ing the outside in.

SOUNDS CHALLENGING? HOW DID YOU ACCOMPLISH THIS?

Kelli: I conceived of an entire “wall of windows” as we called it, facing my parterre and serpentine border gardens with custom glass-backed see through upper cabinets, as well as a set of custom double Dutch doors commissioned from Upstate Doors which have glass cross bucks in the bottom half of the frame. The engineering and construction of these two elements took the most planning and time to implement for our incredible team and they truly make the room so magical!

Premier luxury kitchen design and manufacturing company Bakes & Kropp designed the custom cabinetry incorporating functional design, and thoughtful balance for the renovation.

“Kelli chose our Classic Meridian cabinetry. We kept a mind to the more traditional palate with our exclusive hardware col lection of exposed hinges, and intelligently incorporated the glass multi-pane doors to the glass cabinets in front of new house windows. Having the mullions relate correctly as two separate elements both visually and practically was a challenge. A classic white hand painted Fine Paints of Europe finished the job,” shares Bob Bakes.

Hamptons based contractor Ian Evans is known for preserv ing the historic character of homes while updating them with a seamless flow. Ian shares, “I choose the most traditional and classic features of the house that are worth preserving and then replicate those details into the renovation. I change elements that are not practical for the lifestyle of the owners, usually opening up rooms, and considering how to maximize light. The transformation of this space was dramatic; it completely opened up the view to the beautiful gardens which are the backdrop of color from any place in the kitchen. I love that it has become Kelli and Mark’s favorite room in the house.”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COLLECTING BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN, AND WHERE DO YOU SOURCE IT FROM?

Kelli: I have been collecting vintage Chinoiserie for 15 years. I love the crisp combination and how blue and white can be in corporated into any design scheme. Hunting for rare patterns of ginger jars, Ming jars, and Temple jars at Hamptons antique stores, estate sales, and on my travels is a favorite hobby. I have relationships with many dealers now, so they let me know when a great new acquisition comes in. Recently a life long collector sold his New York estate and I purchased 40 pieces in perfect condition that are quite old.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE DESIGN FEATURE IN THE KITCHEN?

Yes, the fireplace, which took me eight months to find. It is a classically hand carved Louis XV style 19th century French fire place mantel. So elegant, but rooted in the garden world with a gorgeous leaf scallop design, symmetrically embraced by scroll work and vines. Writing from here everyday is not only an in spiration, it is also a joy!

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 117

“With all old house renovations, the first thing I check is the structural integ rity. This farmhouse had undergone multiple renovations, alterations and an addition. We removed the flooring system, and excavated two feet of earth by hand to allow room for new plumbing, electric lines and HVAC,” shares contractor Ian Evans.
