AeroMobil Beautiful flying car. Beautifully integrated.
AeroMobil is a flying car that perfectly makes use of existing infrastructure created for automobiles and planes, and opens doors to real door-to-door travel. As a car it fits into any standard parking space, uses regular gasoline, and can be used in road traffic just like any other car. As a plane it can use any airport in the world, but can also take off and land using any grass strip or paved surface just a few hundred meters long. 8
9
The current flying car prototype AeroMobil 3.0 incorporates significant improvements and upgrades to the previous pre-prototype AeroMobil 2.5. It is now finalised and has been in regular flight-testing program in real flight conditions since October 2014. The AeroMobil 3.0 is predominantly built from advanced composite material. That includes its body shell, wings, and wheels. It also contains all the main features that are likely to be incorporated into the final product, such as avionics equipment, autopilot and an advanced parachute deployment system. AeroMobil 3.0 also implements a number of other advanced technologies, such as a variable angle of attack of the wings that significantly shortens the take-off requirements, and sturdy suspension that enables it to take-off and land even at relatively rough terrain. •••

BRABUS 850 6.0 BITURBO COUPE
THE WORLD’S FASTEST AND MOST POWERFUL ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE COUPE
8
50 horsepower, a peak torque of 1,450 Nm, 0 – 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, and an electronically limited top speed of 217 mph: with the new BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe based on the Mercedes S 63 4MATIC, BRABUS celebrates the world debut of the fastest and most powerful all-wheel-drive coupe on the globe at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The two-door car is not only captivating on account of its unrivalled performance, but above all thanks to its sporty and elegant design with clear-coated carbon-fiber aerodynamic-enhancement components, 21-inch high-tech forged wheels and an exclusive BRABUS fine leather interior.
15
The eight-cylinder twin-turbo engine of the S 63 is thoroughly revised in the BRABUS engine shop using a state-ofthe-art machine park. The installation of a special BRABUS crankshaft with longer stroke plus an enlarged cylinder bore and correspondingly larger forged pistons results in a displacement increase from 5,461 cc to 5,912 cc. The flow-optimizing fine-machining of both cylinder heads also contributes to the performance enhancement. The two special BRABUS turbochargers with larger compressor units and modified exhaust manifolds that replace the production turbos also play a major part in the enormous increase in power. As part of the engine conversion, special metal catalysts with 75-mm thick down pipes and the BRABUS stainlesssteel sports exhaust system with actively controlled butterfly valve are installed in addition. Other modifications to the production engine are instantly apparent when the hood is opened: one of the key components of the engine conversion is the specially designed BRABUS 850 intake module. It includes a larger air filter housing with enlarged intake cross-section, which is supplied with air via a special duct in the hood, and new carbon-
16
fiber air ducts with significantly enlarged cross-sections. A particularly conspicuous feature is the BRABUS Gold Heat Reflection sheathing of the intake and charge air pipes. Precisely programmed mapping for injection and ignition coordinate the perfect interaction of the high-performance components. This not only ensures maximum power output, but also compliance with the strict limits set by the current EURO VI emissions standards. Technology partner MOTUL supplies the high-tech lubricants for the entire powertrain. As the result of the extensive modifications the BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo engine delivers unrivalled performance figures: the peak power output of 625 kW / 850 horsepower (838 bhp) is produced at a low 5,400 rpm. Even more immense is the peak torque of 1,450 Nm (1,069 lb-ft), which is on tap between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. However, in the car this figure is electronically limited to 1,150 Nm (848 lb-ft) in the interest of the longevity of the entire powertrain. The power is channeled to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission, which can also be shifted manually with the BRABUS RACE
17
aluminum paddle shifters on the steering wheel, and the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. A variant with rear-wheel drive is also available. The power unit in the bow makes the BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe the world’s most powerful and fastest four-seat allwheel-drive coupe. From rest, the exclusive two-door car is catapulted to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.5 seconds. A speed of 200 km/h (124 mph) is reached after just 9.4 seconds. Due to tire limitations the top speed is restricted electronically to 350 km/h (217 mph). These enormously fast speeds naturally also place especially high demands on the aerodynamic-enhancement components, which the BRABUS designers developed in the wind tunnel. An additional BRABUS spoiler made from clear-coated carbon fiber was developed for the front bumper. It lends the two-door car a touch of motor racing flair and reduces lift on the front axle at high speeds, further optimizing handling stability. The large air intakes in the front bumper are likewise fitted with tailor-made carbon-fiber elements to add even more dynamic appeal.
18
The BRABUS aerodynamic-enhancement concept for the S-Class Coupe is rounded out with a clear-coated BRABUS carbonfiber diffusor, which is fitted with tailor-made cutouts for the BRABUS sports exhaust system, and the subtle rear spoiler in the trunk lid. It is also made from carbon fiber. In addition, the designers developed carbonfiber surrounds for the side air outlets that add further emphasis to the sporty lines.
high-performance tires are supplied by Continental, Pirelli and YOKOHAMA in sizes 255/35 ZR 21 for the front and 295/30 ZR 21 for the rear axle.
A striking design, top quality and even further enhanced driving dynamics are the outstanding traits of the BRABUS Monoblock wheels, which are available for the Mercedes S-Class Coupe with diameters ranging from 18 to 22 inches.
Yet another option is a BRABUS 22-inch tire/ wheel combination. The BRABUS Monoblock G "Platinum Edition" forged wheels in the combination 9Jx22 with 255/30 ZR 22 tires on the front axle and 10Jx22 with 295/25 ZR 22 at the rear fully fill out the wheel wells.
To be able to make full use of the enormous performance of the BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo variant, the high-performance coupe is equipped with BRABUS Monoblock "PLATINUM EDITION" 21-inch forged wheels. The use of state-of-the-art forging technology results in an optimal symbiosis of maximum strength and low weight. The show car for the 2015 Geneva Motor Show sports Monoblock F cross-spoke wheels in Shadow Gold Chrome design. In sizes 9Jx21 on the front axle and 10.5Jx21 at the rear they make perfect use of the available space below the wheel arches. The optimal
As an alternative, 21-inch mirror-polished Monoblock VI wheels with six double spokes or the Monoblock R design with dimensionally offset pairs of spokes are also available.
The BRABUS suspension lowering module is calibrated to the use of these ultra-lowprofile tires. It lowers the ride height of the two-door car by about .6 inches. To complement the black paint finish, the interior was exclusively refined. With meticulous precision and master craftsmanship the BRABUS upholsterers transformed especially soft and breathable black Mastik leather into a BRABUS fine leather interior in a class of its own. The sweeping lines of the design of the seat upholstery, door pan-
els and dashboard underscore the sporty and elegant nature of the coupe. Subtle contrasts are added with copper-colored seams and piping. The hallmark BRABUS love of detail is also evident in the accents and switches that normally have a silver finish. A total of 219 individual parts were coated in the same Shadow Gold tone as the BRABUS Monoblock F wheels on the vehicle. The headliner was crafted from deep black Alcantara. The BRABUS genuine carbon-fiber elements add markedly sporty highlights in the cockpit. Their surface is finished with a glossy sealant, and they replace the production wood inlays. Aluminum components such as the BRABUS RACE paddle shifters, pedals and door pins further boost this effect. Scuff plates with backlit BRABUS 850 logo, which like the ambient interior lighting can be set to different colors, round out the interior transformation. The 400-km/h (250-mph) BRABUS speedometer demonstrates the enormous potential of the vehicle in the instrument cluster as well. The BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe is available as a complete vehicle and can also be built on the basis of any existing current Mercedes S 63 Coupe.

EXP10 SPEED6 B
A VISION OF BENTLEY DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE
entley Motors is showing the future direction of luxury and performance with the EXP 10 Speed 6 at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show. The concept is a British interpretation of a high performance two seater sportscar using modern automotive design, highly skilled handcrafting, the finest materials and advanced performance technology.
31
From the racing success of the company’s early years to the international motorsport success of today, ‘speed’ is part of Bentley’s DNA. This inspiration is expressed throughout the EXP 10 Speed 6, where iconic Bentley design cues are fused with progressive craftsmanship techniques and modern technologies. Copper elements are used as accents to both exterior and interior features to highlight the performance hybrid potential of the concept’s advanced new powertrain. Performance goals including top speed are set to challenge competitors and define a new segment benchmark. The exterior design of EXP 10 Speed 6 is an expression of muscular, athletic surfaces inspired by the aerodynamic shapes of aircraft fuselages and wings. The ethos of the design was to develop contemporary interpretations of Bentley styling cues, which have been brought
32
together with beauty and precision. The result is a coupe of clean, modern surfaces whilst remaining unmistakably Bentley. Creating exciting contemporary ideas from classic starting points is evident across the car, from the new interpretation of the iconic Bentley matrix grille and four-round headlamps to the paint colour – a deeper, richer and heavily metallic version of British Racing Green. The principles of established Bentley luxury have been applied in new and invigorating ways that use the latest technologies and techniques. The shapes and lines of EXP 10 Speed 6 represent a dynamic sculpture, creating harmony between sharp lines and flowing surfaces and using twisted surfaces to imply speed. Combined with muscular proportions and an athletic stance through the use of a short front overhang, long bonnet, low grille and wide rear shape with a long C-post, the
exterior styling hints at high speed potential of the car. Every exterior material and each individual detail is designed to modern Bentley style. Cutting-edge 3D metal printing technology has allowed the grille mesh, exhausts, door handles and side vents to be delivered with microscale design detail precision. The iconic Bentley mesh grille, for example, is no longer a flat plane of latticework but includes varying depth with a complex 3D geometry only visible when viewed at an angle. Bentley’s renowned quilted leather has inspired three dimensional texture to the precision glass of the headlamps. These exterior elements come together to present a Bentley for the next generation – lean, toned and exquisitely precise, designed around new evolutions of the design elements that unite all Bentleys – past, present and future.
“EXP 10 Speed 6 is one vision for Bentley’s future – a powerful, exquisite and individual concept. The showcar has the potential to be the new pinnacle luxury two-seat sports car. It offers thrilling, driver-oriented performance, complete with trademark modern Bentley luxury and effortlessness. It could be a future model line, alongside the Continental GT and redefining the pinnacle of another market sector, and the styling of the EXP 10 Speed 6 could influence the expansion of the Bentley family. This is not just a new sports car concept – but the potential Bentley sports car – a bold vision for a brand with a bold future.”
~ Wolfgang Dürheimer, chairman and chief executive of Bentley Motors

Luxury Cabin The inspiration for the interior comes from the continuous line that runs around the cabin, driving through the console and into two symmetrical wings before flowing into the door and looping back into the console armrest. Two elegant quilted sports seats are positioned either side of the narrow centre console which houses exquisite driver controls and a highly intuitive 12 touch screen. These features combine futuristic technology seamlessly with progressive Bentley craftsmanship. Each detail has taken core Bentley interior DNA principles and moved them forwards. For example, the classic and purposeful Bentley knurled surface is a feature throughout the controls of the car, but now created using steel and copper together to create a twometal 3D texture. Continuing the fusion of traditional materials and contemporary design statements, the doors of EXP 10
34
Speed 6 feature 3D quilting, milled directly in to solid straight-grain cherry wood. Each resulting diamond is finished with a copper centre. The centre console integrates digital information with tactile controls via a curved touch screen housed in an aluminium frame. The fascia instruments deploy from a flat position into the drivers view as the car is started using the floating “B” button integrated in to a non-symmetrical gear lever finished in aluminium, copper and cherry wood. A mechanical rev counter and digital display combine to provide the perfect balance of modern driver information and analogue beauty. The rear interior space is divided into two compartments designed to house a specifically designed four-piece luggage set. Like the rest of the interior, the rear has been trimmed by the master craftsmen at Bentley in the highest quality Poltrona Frau leather. •••

Regera A NEW ERA
The Regera was created as a luxury Megacar alternative to Koenigsegg’s traditional extreme lightweight race-like road cars. Even though the One:1 and the Agera RS have surprising levels of practicality, creature comforts and features, their primary focus is, and has always been, to be the overall fastest cars on the planet – around a racetrack or elsewhere.
we came up with a novel idea that we call – Constellation DRL.
To get a constellation of stars effect, we scattered the LED´s, which make up the DRL, around the lamp cluster, giving the effect of star constellations on a night sky made up of polished carbon fiber. A side effect is that the LED´s make the whole lamp cluster glitter and shine, as if there where diamonds thrown into them. That´s what we call – Koenigsegg cool.
Regera is Swedish for “to Reign” – a suitable name for a machine that offers a never seen before combination of power, responsiveness and luxury – creating a true Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde persona. In spite of all its advanced technology and creature comforts, the Regera is comparatively light. Therefore, it can still perform competitively around a race circuit. According to us, the only Hyper/Megacar that could be faster around a circuit, is another Koenigsegg. However, out in the open, the Regera will reign as the king of the road, as the fastest accelerating, most powerful production car ever. The Regera will be handcrafted in only 80 examples. Apart from being a suitable production run for Koenigsegg´s newly upgraded and refurbished production facility, the number 80 also symbolizes the principle of domination, control and achievement in Pythagorean Numerology. With the introduction of the Regera, Koenigsegg will, for the first time ever, have two parallel models in production.
The heart and soul of every Koenigsegg is its Internal Combustion Engine – the ICE. The ICE of the Regera follows the path of its siblings, based on the proven and extremely reliable Koenigsegg drysumped twin turbo, DOHC, 5.0 liter V8. The interior features; added insulation, 8 way electrically adjustable memory foam seats. A Koenigsegg 9” infotainment system, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, front, inner and rear camera system with recording capability, Apple CarPlay, supreme sound system, ambient lighting and many other great new features. The Regera also comes with front and rear parking sensors and remote diagnostic and firmware update capability.
As before, the Koenigsegg V8 is the most downsized homologated production ICE in the world, with 220 Hp per liter engine (using regular pump gas). The compactness of the engine makes the Regera nimble, efficient and lightweight.
A good design and layout of the DRL (Daylight Running Lights) gives character, as the DRL is what’s first seen when a car comes driving from a distance.
The difference to the Agera engine is that, given the electric propulsion of the Direct Drive system, we did not have to go as extreme on ICE power, as the combined output is way over 1500 Hp and over 2000 Nm torque, anyway. Given this we could install even smaller, faster spooling turbos on the Regera, further enhancing the ICE drivability and response.
We wanted the Regera to stand out and clearly be recognized also from a far, so
The Direct Drive transmission of the Regera is capable of delivering never before
39
experienced blistering response and performance while at the same time being able to deliver one of the smoothest and most soothing driving experiences. Given this high level of bi-polar characteristics, the rest of the car had to be up to the task of delivering blistering, lightweight performance at new levels of soothing luxury. Therefore Koenigsegg developed a completely new rear sub frame and rear structure that allows the engine and transmission to rest on active soft mounts. When driving in normal conditions, the mounts stay soft and isolate engine noise and vibrations. When driving spirited, the mounts firm up to solidify the car and give greater response. The shock absorbers are active in height and stiffness – again allowing for the bi-polar behavior. Furthermore, the Regera can be driven in absolute silence, as it is possible to go into full EV mode for shorter periods of time. Given the latest advances in compact lightweight hydraulics, Koenigsegg has managed to robotize the entire Regera with almost no weight addition. As the Regera features functions such as; active
40
front and rear wings, chassis control and lifting system – the pumps and accumulators were already in place to connect a few more hydraulic operators. These in turn replaced gas struts of equal weight – resulting in minimal weight impact. Due to the above, the Regera is the first car in the world that operates all body closures completely automatically. The spectacle to open and close the entire car simultaneously from the remote or smartphone, truly turns the Regera into a transformer. On top of this, all body closures have soft latching mechanisms, giving the Regera a sophisticated feel. The fully robotized body system, with soft latches adds a mere 5 kg, making full robotization a very desirable option. Furthermore the wing mirrors are autofolding while the doors open, giving added practicality and visual drama, as the Dihedral Synchro Helix Doors swing out and rotate 90 degrees to fully clear the door opening, without protruding more than the width of the door – making them highly ergonomic.
The Regera utilizes an EV plug in feature. Behind the robotized rear number plate nestles a type 2 mode 3 charging port. This means that the Direct Drive Battery can be charged either by the combustion engine or through the charging port. The plug-in solution enabled us to create a novel feature we call – Battery Drain Mode, or BDM for short. For example, when there is around 50 km range left to the destination or next charging point, a preset geo location or a push on the touchscreen will trigger the BDM. This means the car calculates the driving behaviour and makes sure the battery is fully drained upon arrival and is ready for a full charge. This drastically minimize fuel consumption and lower C02 emissions as the fuel consumed has been correctly optimized for the length of the journey. The Koenigsegg One:1 featured the world’s first top mounted active rear wing. This was an innovative solution that maximized down force compared to its size and weight. The Regera, being more luxury oriented, has taken this solution to the next level, allowing the wing also to fully fold down
into the body work enhancing the cars elegance while parking and reducing drag while cruising. The wing´s active foldable mechanism, is a lightweight work of carbon fiber art and the movement is truly mesmerizing. Sporting a unique exhaust-note, the Regera has a custom designed, sound tuned titanium system jointly developed by Akrapovic. The novel exhaust system includes a fish tail outlet, envisioned by Christian, which
has not been seen on a production car for the last half century, so we are excited to bring back the sound of the past! As many of you have heard, Christian is not a fan of hybrids, as they are generally compromised when it comes to weight, complexity, cost, packaging and efficiency. Given this, the Regera is not what we at Koenigsegg would call a hybrid, as it does not have the traditional shortcomings of a hybrid. Instead, the Regera is a new breed of Koenigsegg – and car for that matter.
The first fully
ROBOTIZED
car
Traditional, so called parallel, hybrids are compromised and heavy, as they have two independent propulsion systems. Alternatively, series hybrids are less compromised when it comes to weight, complexity and costs, but instead they are compromised when it comes to efficiency, as there is too much energy conversion going on. This brings us to the Koenigsegg Direct Drive Transmission or KDD for short – invented by Christian von Koenigsegg and developed for the Regera by the Koenigsegg Advanced Engineering team. The patent pending KDD system replaces the combustion engines traditional transmission and gives the added benefit of pure EV mode. What is unique is that the KDD manages to create direct drive to rear axle from the combustion engine without
41
the need of multitude gears or other traditional types of variable transmissions, with inherently high energy losses. During highway travel, for example, the KDD reduces drivetrain losses, compared to traditional transmission or CVT by over 50%, as there is no step up or step down gear working in series with the final drive – just direct power transmission from the engine to the wheels. To supplement the energy from the combustion engine and to allow for torque vectoring, regenerative braking, extreme drivers response, reverse and energy conversion, there are three YASA developed electric motors. YASA´s axial flux motors are extremely power dense and allow for direct drive, making them a keyingredient for the KDD. One YASA for each rear wheel, giving direct drive – this time electric – and one on the crankshaft, giving torque-fill, electrical generation and starter motor functionality. The three electric motors constitute the most powerful electrical motor set-up in production car history, replacing the gears of a normal transmission while adding; power, torque, torque vectoring and yet still able to remove weight.
42
The battery pack and PDU for the KDD were developed and manufactured together with Electric Supercar virtuoso Mate Rimac and his engineering team. The 620 V battery pack is of the latest fully flooded type and is the most powerdense battery pack ever created for a road going car with 9,27 kWh of energy, 67 liters of volume, and 115kg of weight. Still, a full 500 kW can momentarily be drawn during acceleration and over 150 kW can be absorbed by the battery-pack during regenerative braking and ICE power generation mode. Every cell of the pack is carefully monitored for voltage, state of charge, health and temperature. The cells are enclosed in a fully machined aluminum casing for safety and stability. The battery is located in the most protected area of the car – the carbon-aramid chassis tunnel. The whole battery pack is actively cooled by external radiators and the Regera´s all new electrical air-conditioning system, which also can pre-cool the car via the Koenigsegg app on a warm day. The complete KDD system, including the battery, adds a mere 88kg to the Regera´s weight, compared to what the Regera would have weighed with a tra-
ditional ICE, coupled to a 7 speed DCT transmission instead of the KDD. Presently no other hybrid Hypercar even comes close to this type of weight ratio for their electrification. This is interesting, as they all have smaller battery capacity and less electric power than the Regera. To put it into perspective, the Regera has almost triple as many electric Bhp (700 Bhp) and over 300 Bhp more than its closest hybrid rival. Still the Regera manages to be very competitive weight wise, while
including unusual features such as a six way adjustable electrical seat and a fully robotized body work. This is no small feature and it is a testament to the meticulous nature of the Koenigsegg engineering team. The combination of electrical and combustion power is just mind boggling. When you get up to speed, the system really comes into play – How about 3.2 seconds between 150 to 250 km/h and under 20 seconds from 0 to 400 km/h?

A NEW BENCHMARK FOR THE SPORTS CAR MARKET
The Sports Series introduces the McLaren design language to the sports car segment for the first time, with tense, ‘shrinkwrapped’, body lines marking it out from the competition. Immediately identifiable as a McLaren, the Sports Series includes design features such as elegant flying buttresses, dihedral doors and a concave rear window to bring a new, unique and exciting look to the sports car segment.
47
Dynamic styling provides visual presence and is based around functional elements, combining fluid surfaces and strong features to deliver a design that optimises air flow management in, out and around the vehicle. Weight is minimised through the layering of panels, which are designed to float above aerodynamic surfaces along with suspended members, supporting the potency of this compact sports car. The use of aluminium for the majority of body panels keeps weight to a minimum, while the new forming methods allow for a more intricate and detailed design, including the intricate rear deck. The front bumper design on the Sports Series is crucial to how the air interacts with the bodywork. It is the first area to interact with the airflow, dictating how air is controlled before passing over, under and through the vehicle. The front bumper has a pronounced centre
48
point that forms the centre of pressure, piercing the air to reduce drag and forming four quadrants. The air is divided above and below the bodywork, and also to either side. The strong crease lines along the hood add design definition and, more importantly, aid air flow over the doors and into the side air intakes, to help cool the high temperature radiators – a principle used in Formula 1™. Below the front bumper are the carefully angled Aero Blades which create an area of high pressure ahead of the low temperature radiators. An integrated spoiler at the trailing edge of the rear deck has been optimised for a balance of drag and downforce. The surfaces leading to the integrated spoiler have been design to be as streamlined as possible, ensuring clean airflow to provide more downforce. Every McLaren road car since the iconic McLaren F1 from the 1990s has
included distinctive dihedral doors, and the Sports Series continues that design tradition. In true McLaren style, the newly designed doors have been developed to offer a greater operating range, and with a revised opening arc, they allow easier access to the cabin with a larger aperture opening. The carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis is also a unique design further improving ingress and egress. The advanced and intricate door design is inspired by those on the McLaren P1™, and features a ‘floating’ tendon which works to channel air into the ultra efficient air intake. This supplements the side intakes that directly feed the HTRs (High Temperature Radiators) which, in turn allows for smaller side intakes, reducing drag. As with other panels on the Sports Series, the doors are produced primarily from aluminium to minimise weight
and allow for the intricate aerodynamic design. The upper tendon is manufactured using a resin injection process to deliver an extremely rigid yet slender component, along with a lightweight core to minimise weight. To keep the exterior surfaces clear, the door is opened using the button located on the lower edge of the tendon. Every effort has been made to optimise aerodynamic performance on the Sports Series. An example of this is evident in the design of the wing mirror arms, which improve cooling efficiency by two percent. This aerodynamic gain has been achieved through minimising the cross sectional area of the wing mirror arms while also studying how best the airflow from the vehicle and mirrors interact. The ‘shrinkwrapped’ design of McLaren Sports Series carefully channels the airflow over every panel. The rear of
the glasshouse on the Sports Series features unique floating C pillars, allowing air to follow the shape of the cabin, and flow beneath. The design has been aerodynamically optimised to primarily to counteract lift over the roof. The airflow channelled through the buttress equalises the areas of low pressure created by the convex roof, increasing downforce. In addition, this feature also minimises drag, and increases the flow of cool, clean air over the engine bay to optimise powertrain heat management. A further distinctive feature of the Sports Series Coupe models is a concave rear windscreen which sits between the flying buttresses. Together with new thinner B pillars, this design ensures visibility from within the Sports Series is excellent – something McLaren models are renowned for – especially for a mid-engine sports car, where rear and rear-three-quarter vision can often be compromised.
The Sports Series offers unrivalled performance and driving exhilaration in the sports car class. It is the only car in its sector to offer all the credentials typically found in the top-tier supercars: lightweight carbon fibre chassis construction, mid-engine rear wheel drive configuration. Overall performance for the 570S is class leading with the 0 to 62mph sprint taking 3.2 seconds. Top speed is 204mph. A dry weight of as low as 2,895lbs is around 330lbs lighter than the nearest rival. This low weight optimises handling, agility and makes the Sports Series even more responsive. The Sports Series is fitted with a newlydeveloped suspension system ensuring enhanced levels of driver engagement and refinement on both road and track. The system uses independent adaptive dampers with front and rear anti-rollbars – distinct from the Super
49
Series – and Formula 1™- style dual wishbones, with the set up. Adaptive dampers offer control over bump and rebound settings using the familiar McLaren ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ handling settings, with the Sports Series having bespoke damper settings to other McLaren models to date. In ‘Normal’ mode, the system provides a refined yet engaging ride, while the ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ settings allow the 570S to become more trackfocused when required. Twin damper valves give precise control, while dual wishbone suspension provides optimum suspension travel and geometry. As with every McLaren designed and developed for the road or track since 1981, the heart of the Sports Series is a lightweight carbon fibre chassis. While similar to the chassis in the Super Series, the MonoCell II is unique to the Sports Series. It has been newly designed with more of a focus on dayto-day usability, with the narrower front sill, and height reduced by 80mm to offer improved ingress and egress from the cabin. It is incredibly strong and stiff yet weighs less than 80kg, offering optimum levels of protection. As part of this development, the front and rear
50
aluminium structures have also been revised, fine tuning load paths into the new carbon structure, accommodating the new anti-roll bar positions, and to reduce complexity and inevitably weight. Currently, the Sports Series is the only model range within the sports car segment to offer carbon fibre technology. For the first time on a McLaren road car, the models in the Sports Series feature aluminium body panels rather than composites or carbon fibre. This change reflects the higher production volumes, with aluminium offering superior quality of finish – especially in sur-
facing – for larger production numbers. A typical downside is that it gives less design freedom, for complex shapes, than moulded composite or carbon fibre panels. Utilising a new ‘superform’ method – in which hot aluminium can be blown into complex shapes over a mould – has allowed McLaren to produce intricate parts, most notably the large rear deck, which has also reduced weight. The aluminium body panels are no heavier than the composite panels used on the Super Series cars. Aluminium is used for the front and rear fenders, hood, rear deck, lower doors and roof. The
ation; as such the design of the cabin includes concealed pockets within each of the doors, a central bin under the arm rest and a glovebox. The seven-inch IRIS touchscreen is flush with the facia and, as first seen on the McLaren P1™, the air conditioning controls are all incorporated, reducing the amount of switchgear and controls in the cabin environment. The touchscreen also controls the standard DAB digital radio (or Sirius satellite radio in North America), as well as satellite navigation, Bluetooth telephony and media streaming, voice activation and the audio media player. The IRIS system also includes the electronic owner’s manual.
upper section of the doors including the ‘tendons’ and the front splitter are made from composite. The Sports Series features an evolution of the 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo engine, named M838TE, with 30 percent of components bespoke to the new model. Engineered by McLaren, it produces 570PS (562 bhp) at 7,400 rpm, and 600Nm (443 lb ft) of torque at 5,0006,500 rpm. The classic mid-engine rear-wheel drive supercar configuration optimises handling and agility – except that it competes in the sports car, not the supercar, market – delivering power through a seven-speed seamless shift gearbox (SSG). Despite being one of the world’s most powerful road car engines, it is also extremely efficient. A new stop-start system seen for the first time at McLaren provides greater efficiency during city driving, improving fuel consumption and CO2 output. The 570S returns 25.5 mpg on the EU combined cycle with an improved range, while emissions are just 258g/km. The Sports Series uses the same seven-speed twin-clutch SSG (Seamless Shift Gearbox) as the 650S, and offers a ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ modes. The settings have been recalibrated to produce faster shifts, achieved through a number of new control strategies, focusing on the rate of engine speed transitions. New advanced throttle con-
trol during shifts ramps up or down engine speed with greater urgency. The interior of the Sports Series has been created with a focus on space and ergonomics in mind, offering great outward visibility and interior space for occupants and their belongings. Organic curves carried inside from the exterior design bring delicate tension without aggression to ensure the cabin remains a welcoming environment. Overall, the Sports Series is 11mm longer than the Super Series, and the cabin is both longer and wider, boosting all round spaciousness and increasing shoulder room. The carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis has been redesigned with a lower sill to enable easier entry and exit, and the redesigned dihedral doors further optimise access. The feeling of luxury and airiness is heightened by the use of a floating centre console, to add a sense of depth to the cabin. Shapes and lines seamlessly integrate from exterior to interior, and vice versa. The facia and door trim incorporate floating elements which remove mass – both visually and practically – as well as adding layered depth and integrated components such as speakers and the touchscreen IRIS system. Stowage of everyday items within the cabin has been an important consider-
As with all models in the McLaren range, the touchscreen is mounted in portrait mode not landscape. This reduces width, enabling driver and passenger to sit closer together, bringing them closer to the centreline of the car to further optimise response and agility. New seats in the Sports Series offer increased levels of support and comfort. As standard, the seats are six-way adjustable for the driver, including electric height adjustment, four-way for the passenger, and are fully upholstered in leather. Four further upholstery options are available, giving increased levels of customisation and comfort with Nappa Sport, Nappa Design, Nappa Alcantara® and ‘By McLaren’ specifications. Fully electric eight-way adjustable seats with heating and memory function can be specified as an option. A comfort entry / exit feature is also available to provide the maximum amount of room to enter or exit the car, by moving the seat to its lowest and most rearward position and retracting the electric steering column. Carbon fibre shelled racing seats, as featured in the McLaren P1™ are also available. These fixed back manually adjustable bucket seats offer significant support with a provision for harnesses to be fitted. These lightweight seats provide a substantial 15kg weight saving.•••

The new Lotus Evora 400 is the latest pure and focused supercar from Lotus, combining high performance with the legendary Lotus benchmark handling. It is faster and dynamically more capable than the previous Lotus Evora leading to greater agility and a more involving drive. Maximum speed is 186 mph and acceleration 0-60 mph is just 4.1 seconds. This enables the new Lotus Evora 400 to lap the challenging test track at the Lotus Headquarters in Hethel, Norfolk, a scintillating SIX seconds faster than the previous model. Over two thirds of the Lotus Evora 400 is new, including its supercharged and charge-cooled mid-mounted 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 400 horsepower and 410 Nm of torque. A new aluminium chassis incorporates a new interior and the lightweight composite body has changed significantly both front and rear. Following the core values of the company, not only is the new Lotus Evora 400 faster than the previous model, it is also 22 kg lighter, achieved through careful and clever design and attention to detail. This weight reduction is even more impressive considering
56
that the supercar has more power and a higher standard specification than before.
control before intervention is required. Both ‘Sport’ and ‘Race’ settings increase throttle responsiveness.
In describing the remit for the new Lotus Evora 400, Jean-Marc Gales, Chief Executive Officer for Group Lotus plc, states, “A requirement for all Lotus cars is to be a benchmark for handling, to be the quickest car from A to B and to provide the driver with a pure and involving driving experience. The Evora 400 is the fastest road-going Lotus that we have ever produced, possessing performance that can only be matched by cars costing significantly more. It delivers supercar looks allied to supercar performance.”
Its top speed of 186 mph propels the Evora 400 to the upper segment of supercar performance expectations. The benchmark lap time at the Lotus Test Track at Hethel, has been slashed by a phenomenal SIX seconds due to higher engine power, revised spring and damper settings, a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) and a downforce figure of 32 kg (70 lbs) at 150 mph (242 km/h). This downforce equates to 12 kg, 26 lbs front; 20 kg, 44 lbs rear, achieved by the Evora 400’s flat-floor, lightweight composite rear diffuser, three-element rear wing and airflow management strategy.
Engine power has been increased from that of the Evora S; a respected 345 hp to 400 hp at 7,000rpm. The supercharger fitment ensures strong bottom-end torque and the figure has also been increased to 302 lbs ft achieved between 3,500 to 6,500 rpm. This translates into even more strident acceleration for a 0-60 mph time of just 4.1 seconds. Traction slip thresholds (‘Drive‘, ‘Sport’ and ‘Race’ settings) can be altered via a driver-selectable switch, which allows the driver enhanced vehicle
Despite the luxury fittings and equipment expected of a modern supercar, Lotus remains true to its lightweight, dynamic remit and the new Evora 400 tips the scales (unladen) at just 1,415 kgs (3,119 lbs; auto: 1,419 kg, 3,128 lbs), which amounts to a reduction of 22 kg, or 48 lbs (automatic option: 23 kg / 50lbs) from the outgoing Evora model. The new Lotus Evora 400 is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine but with a new
All new front seats are lighter (by 3 kg each) and provide greater support for both driver and front passenger. As an option, rear passengers are also catered for, with the rear seats being 280 mm wider than the previous Lotus Evora; weight has been reduced in the rear seats by 3.4 kg.
supercharger, water-to-air chargecooler and engine management system. Its power output has increased by 16% from 345 hp to 400 hp. Torque has increased from 400 Nm / 295 lbs ft to 410 Nm / 302 lbs ft with maximum torque available from 3500 rpm to 6500 rpm. The new Evora 400 exudes a visual appeal that is perfectly in line with its supercar status. The overall effect is of a car with a more aggressive stance, that appears lower, wider and more planted on the road, despite no increase in width compared with the previous Evora. The overall length has increased by 1.4 inches 173 inches. The approach angle has been reduced from 11.5 degrees to 10 degrees to aid aerodynamic downforce. The front of the car features an evolution of the traditional ‘Lotus mouth’ that balances perfectly the needs for
both form and function. The large side intakes not only give the car more road presence but also fulfil the technical requirements to cool the 400 hp engine and increase aerodynamic downforce. At the rear, a wide and powerful look is combined resourcefully with aerodynamic efficiency. Sharp corner features maximise the width perception and give clean airflow separation. The distinctive three-element wing and new lightweight composite rear diffuser contribute to the impressive 32 kg of downforce at 150 mph. A comprehensive round of changes has resulted in an all new interior for the Lotus Evora 400. Designed elegantly and functionally to be both lightweight and of high quality, the interior is a perfect match for the striking exterior of the car.
As a hand-crafted sports car, the bespoke feel is carried across three new trim levels, including trim upgrades in full Alcantara, or Scottish leather, with each featuring specific trim detailing. Apart from the materials used, the new door casings, centre console and more space in the rear support a determined approach to improve both accessibility into and egress from the car‘s cabin. As befits a driver orientated car, the cabin features a lightweight forged magnesium steering wheel with a red race-inspired position stripe and a revised instrument cluster that possesses simple clear dials (white on black graphics). Switchgear haptics and ergonomics have also been improved significantly, the latter through location to the upper-central dashboard and, for the first time, a new engine start-stop button has been fitted to the Lotus Evora 400. A high-end in-car entertainment system is standard, with the latest, lightweight and slim-line door speakers being fitted within the new door casings, while A-pillar incorporated tweeters improve the sound reproduction quality. •••
