CHOPARD Digging through Chopard’s archives, we came across some vintage watches that evoke perfectly the eras in which they were created.

This 1960s ad, left, features a surreal, falseeyelashed model with watches nestled in her hair. The Happy Diamond watch for men (below), launched in 1976, has gone on to be one of the most endearing collections in Chopard’s history. And the first ever Mille Miglia watch (below), produced in 1988, is still a best-seller.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of Chopard, Switzerland’s largest family-owned watch and jewelry brand, and it is celebrating by highlighting its achievements through the decades. We think these do a pretty good job of that, but to get a better idea of why Chopard remains one of the most glamorous brands in the world, visit the new Chopard boutique at Luxury Avenue in Los Cabos.

Founded as a family-run firm in Manhattan back in 1941, Coach is a brand that’s always on trend and in demand.

TAKE A TUMBLE Skyscraper heel lovers beware. After strutting down the runway for years, maxi heels are falling out of fashion fast.

Practical—and wearable—is the new mantra. They might add fewer inches to your height, but at least you can put one foot in front of the other with ease.

The extreme, dramatic platform styles of recent seasons certainly had their ups and downs. Quite literally—put a foot wrong and you were in danger of toppling over. Not to mention the pain caused by simply stepping out in them for more than an hour.

This season, there’s no need to fear shopping for footwear.

With heels shrinking and more traditional styles replacing the towering designs that had become a wardrobe staple, there’s something altogether more ladylike about spring’s sassiest shoes. That means women the world over can breathe a collective sigh of relief.

With many top designers now offering swimwear collections, trends are increasingly a reflection of what’s happening in fashion. Take Louis Vuitton’s pretty, “ahoy there” bikini (previous page), in navy and white stripes with spotty red trim, from the 2010 Cruise Collection, which shows just how easily a trend—in this case, the Breton stripe—can transfer to swimwear.

Louis Vuitton also ticks the on-trend box with its black ruffle swimsuit (pictured) from the same collection, which is a pretty take on the traditional one-piece with flattering PAUL & SHARK frills—another spring trend—around the bustline.

The trick to successful swimwear buying is not to set your heart on a particular style—keep an open mind and try on an armful, that way you’ll be sure to find something that best flatters your figure. It’s heartening to hear, however, that even the most glamorous of celebrity moms have their off days. In an interview with BellaSugar.com, supermodel Heidi Klum admits that sometimess even she doesn’t like what she sees in the mirror. or. “[But] the important thing is to surround yourself with people who love you no matter what you look like in the morning,” she says.

I can’t imagine Heidi looks remotely like I do in n the morning after my daughter has kept me up p half the night, but, of course, she’s right. Like all busy working moms, famous or not, the best bit is not having to worry what you look like behind closed doors.

The best thing about tanned skin is that you can get away with wearing much less makeup, so it’s time to rethink your beauty routine. Replace your foundation and powder with a tinted moisturizer and bronzer, and ditch the dark lipstick—a light gloss better complements a tan.

Persuading women into parting with hundreds of dollars for a face cream is big business, but what makes these prestige supercreams so expensive? Donna Francis investiga When the original supercream, Crème de la Mer, was launched in 2001 people were scandalized that a moisturizer could cost more than US$100 a pot. Questions like, “How can this price be justified?” and “Will it really work?” soon arose—even among the most trusting of beauty buyers. But as word spread that La Mer wasn’t just cooked up out of thin air by greedy marketing bods but was the brainchild of NASA scientist Max Huber—who originally created the kelp and vitamin formula to heal burns—consumers became less skeptical. Highend beauty brands soon cottoned on to the fact that, as long as the research and ingredients behind these supercreams were as extravagant as their price tags, women would pay for them.

It’s no surprise, then, that the science behind face creams has become a priority for top-end skincare brands, and each new supercream has a pricey magic ingredient, or 10, to give it that anti-aging edge. Among these are 13 potent botanical extracts and six pricey botanical oils, one of which—krameria triandra—has such fine antioxidant pedigree that it is said to be even more effective than green tea in the war against aging.

It’s not just an impressive list of ingredients that validates a supercream’s status, though. Cutting-edge technologies and ground-breaking skincare science come at a high price, too.

Christian Dior created its most potent skincare line, L’Or de Vie, with the famous French vineyard, Château d’Yquem, (aka the home of Sauternes). The formula is made with the purified sap that runs through the vine shoots of the sauvignon grape.

What’s so hi-tech about that? Well, the cost of the cream is put into perspective when the process of extracting the sap from the vine is understood. Dior has patented a unique process that enables the sap from the vine to be collected whilst preserving its nutritional properties. This involves a 17-step purification process to extract the 10 antioxidants and regenerating molecules that make the products work as well as they do.

The legend of the

ROYAL OAK

Audemars Piguet’s best-selling line of watches, the Royal Oak, is legendary in horological circles. Its distinctive, octagonal shape made it the stand-out design of the 1970s and, although it has been adapted and updated to suit each decade since, the design is still as iconically Audemars Piguet as the day it was born.

The Swiss watch brand’s history goes back much further than the Royal Oak, though. Founded in 1875, Audemars Piguet produced some of the most sophisticated timepieces ever made, including the “Grand Complication” pocket watch in 1908. The model pictured below is a classic example with its minute repeater, perpetual calendar, and splitseconds chronograph.

Concept timepieces take a notoriously long time from their unveiling before they reach the customer. Surprising watch aficionados every year has become a must in the watchmaking world, and manufacturers are competing to be first to unveil the next Big Idea.

Some complain that this is to generate publicity for watches that may exist only as prototypes or as computer-generated images.

But most concept watches do, eventually, see the light of day. Why the long wait? Simply because every concept watch seeks to be revolutionary—and revolutions in time, take time.

Take TAG Heuer’s concept timepiece, the Monaco V4.

Introduced in 2004, it is only now that 150 are available. Is it worth the wait? Absolutely—it’s nothing short of a revolution. It has abandoned classic technology, replacing conventional gear wheels and pinions with drive belts and ball bearings.

Stéphane Linder, of TAG Heuer, says one of the major problems in developing a working model was the production of the drive belts, which are produced by injection moulding, an extraordinary feat given that their thickness is 0.5mm (a human hair measures around 0.9mm). Linder explains, “Our concept watches are all about building a brand image.

It’s good for TAG Heuer and excellent for creativity.”

The way in which concept watches can increase the reputation of a brand is significant. Manufacturers that are joining this elite haute horological club include Hermès, Dior and Cartier, companies not historically associated with watchmaking. Hermès’ endulette Boule, for example, is a collectible clock that offers a

360° time display. The crystal boule, which weighs over 1kg, has an original five-barrel Calibre H1951 movement that is manually wound by the to-and-fro motion of its crystal hemispheres.

Judging by appearances, Concord’s C1 QuantumGravity is a watch that you might expect to wait years for. But this futuristic timepiece went into production within months of its launch. It boasts a 48.5mm titanium case revealing a panoramic display of complexities, including a column filled with glowing green liquid.

This is the power-reserve indicator: a pressure system fills and empties the cylinder with the liquid as it raises and elevates based on the power left in the mainspring. Meanwhile, the tourbillion is attached on a bridge with suspension cables and can be seen fully on the dial in all its bi-axial glory. The concept is to increase accuracy, but in reality it just looks terribly impressive. Built from 511 parts, it was no mean feat that it was only months between the C1 prototype launch in April 2009 and the delivery to its first customer—a collector in Mexico—before Christmas.

Cartier’s very first concept watch, the IDOne, is another revolution—an adjustment-free watch. It may spring from

The C1 QuantumGravity boasts a titanium case revealing glowing green liquid a simple idea, but it required the rethinking of its vital components. The solution was to develop new materials. The IDOne’s balance wheel is formed from one block of transparent carbon crystal, a component that can be measured exactly—to one-micron precision—and is as hard as diamonds. This level of perfection means the wheel, which traditionally requires screws or excess weight removed to adjust the balance, is reduced to a compact wafer. The escapement wheel and the anchor are created out of this material while the hairspring is made of Zérodur, a zero-expansion optical glass used in giant telescopes. As it is made to a precise shape, no adjustment is needed, resulting in a more accurate, easier to assemble and maintenance-free watch.

Unlike other concept watches, the IDOne is not going into production and will sit on a pedestal in the Cartier museum.

But its importance is not just to enhance Cartier’s reputation or gain press coverage. It is early days yet for Cartier to say which developments it will take from the IDOne and put into production, but the innovations it contains will be developed into a whole new generation of timepieces.

At January’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva, Switzerland, where Cartier launched its IDOne, Montblanc unveiled its groundbreaking Timewriter 1 Metamorphosis. By moving a slide on the bezel, the watch metamorphoses—thanks to a complicated arrangement of wings hidden around the dial—from a wristwatch to a chronograph, all in just 20 seconds.

And that is the appeal of the concept watch to collectors: it is not merely about complications and innovations that amaze; it is also about owning a piece of horological history. And that is well worth the wait.

Rose gold works especially well with pink and purple stones such as amethyst, pink sapphire and topaz. But pink stones also give extra warmth to white gold and platinum.

Tiffany’s Swing collection elegantly matches pink sapphires with platinum and white diamonds.

Multi-facetted stones are becoming more popular, with many jewelers developing their own unique cuts for optimum sparkle. David Yurman uses multi-facetted semi-precious stones in his statement Albion cocktail ring collection, while a multi-facetted amethyst provides a partystopping focus for Yurman’s sensual Gold Infinity necklace.

Big, gobstopper-smooth cabochons are still favored in statement cocktail rings. This polished, round cut works especially well for stones with unusual hues, opalescence or inclusions, such as rutilated quartz. Roberto Coin’s new cocktail rings are set with balloon-shaped quartz stones enhanced by golden threads of rutile.

But taking jewelry design to another level is Chopard’s 150th anniversary haute joaillerie collection of 150 unique, animal-themed pieces. Chopard’s creative director, Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele, has created her Animal Planet collection around some exceptional gemstones.

Smart customers know that an exceptional movement equals an exceptional watch.

Such movements are the pinnacle of high-end watchmaking, and the best are manufactured in-house. Jaeger-LeCoultre has been creating its own revolutionary movements since the birth of the brand in 1833, as has Zenith, which has an illustrious history of making movements, including the world-famous El Primero. Both continue to pioneer new-generation movements that are extraordinarily sophisticated and technically brilliant.

Cartier and Montblanc have only recently begun developing the inner workings for their timepieces, previously relying on other watchmakers to provide the movements. It took Breitling, pioneer of the first wrist-worn chronograph in 1915, until last year to join the exclusive club of genuine watch-movement manufacturers when it launched the Chronomat B01, fitted with its own mechanical chronograph.

The fact that all these brands are placing so much importance on the development of their own movements is a sign that watchmakers are taking their art ever more seriously. Which is good news for buyers because there has never been so many extraordinary watches, fitted with extraordinary movements, to choose from.

Aesthetes might be asking why mess with a good thing, but we say, why not? Created 60 years ago, the classic Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Rolesor is easily the most recognizable watch in the world, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a bit of fun with it.

For the first time, Rolex has decorated the bezel of its fashionably large new watch for women, the 36mm Datejust Rolesor, with 52 brilliantcut diamonds, giving it a sparkling facelift. But it is the floral faces that have set tongues wagging. Is this a clever move by Rolex? Are they being artistic or just plain audacious?

Seen close up, the new 36mm Datejust Rolesor is quite clearly the former. Larger watches are a trend that’s here to stay for ladies, and this size is just right if you like big but not huge—it feels comfortably heavy on your wrist. The floral face, available in four colors—silver, pink, aqua green and bronze—is subtle, not showy. The contours of the flowers are best appreciated when the face catches the light.

Like every Rolex Datejust Rolesor 36mm, the floral model is available in yellow or white gold with steel and you get to choose the style of bracelet: Oyster or Jubilee. Of the four styles, I predict the pink will be most popular, but that’s simply because it looked the prettiest on my wrist.

For all those who are saying why change a much-loved design, there are plenty more who agree with me: it’s great to see Rolex getting creative with a classic.

For the past three years, Xcaret Eco Park has hosted a photography competition to showcase pictures taken during its annual Festival of Life and Death in November. The festival coincides with Day of the Dead, an annual holiday in Mexico that celebrates those who have passed on. One of the most evocative recent entries was Erick Ruiz Mora’s photograph of a mariachi band playing at the grave of a loved one.

The best competition entries from the past three years, previously only on display at Xcaret, made up the inaugural exhibition on Luxury Avenue Cancún’s mezzanine level—a new art space that, three times a year, will showcase some of Mexico’s best artists. In April, a new show takes its place, with photographs of the beautiful haciendas of South-East Mexico, so you can mix shopping with a dose of local culture when you next visit Luxury Avenue.

Mexican textiles are admired around the world for their extraordinary diversity of color and techniques. From Oaxaca to the Yucatán, indigenous people weave, spin, dye and embroider textiles that couple native traditions with postcolonial influences to striking effect. This rich heritage g is the inspiration for the designers at Mexican fashion house use Pineda Covalin.

Since 1996, Cristina Pineda and Ricardo Covalin have collaborated to produce a range of luxury goods that encapsulates the history of Mexican textiles. What started as a project with the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology gy and History has grown into an international fashion brand with boutiques across the globe.

So what is it about Mexican textile design that has helped d make Pineda Covalin such a success? The production of fabrics in Mexico dates from 1,000BC when the loom was first used to mesh threads together. Since then, textiles havee been fashioned over the centuries to provide clothing for g various communities, as well as make other items, including tablecloths and bags. These costumes provide a distinctive look for each region and vary from village to village. “The artisans of Mexico are still alive and well,” says Ricardo.

The designers at Pineda Covalin have immersed themselves in the world of Mexican textiles, from treasured exhibits discovered in museums to contemporary examples produced by indigenous artisans. These designs are painstakingly reproduced or imaginatively reworked in high-quality silks.

Pineda Covalin takes pride in promoting and preserving the traditions of Mexican design while making them more accessible to a contemporary audience. “The most important aspect of the work is to make Mexican designs more modern and sophisticated,” Ricardo says. “Traditional textiles, such as those made in Chiapas, can’t be worn on the street. So we change the cut of the fabric to make them wearable in everyday life. They are intended to inspire people to take an interest in the origins of traditional Mexican textiles, and to encourage them to travel to the areas from which they originate. And, of course, to promote tourism in Mexico.”

Storytelling is a major theme in Pineda Covalin’s range of luxury goods; every design has a story behind it that can be shared. Ricardo points to the men’s neckties as an example.

At first glance they appear to be brightly colored silk ties.

Estas características le otorgan un look distintivo a cada región y varían de un poblado a otro. “Los artesanos de México aún están vivos y en buenas condiciones”, dice Ricardo.

Los diseñadores de Pineda Covalin se han sumergido en el mundo de los textiles mexicanos, desde pequeños trozos descubiertos en museos hasta ejemplos contemporáneos producidos por artistas indígenas. Estos diseños son laboriosamente reproducidos o recreados en sedas de muy alta calidad.

Pineda Covalin se siente orgullosa de promover y preservar las tradiciones del diseño textil mexicano mientras los hace más accesibles a un público más contemporáneo. “El aspecto más importante es hacer de los diseños mexicanos algo más moderno y sofisticado,” dice Ricardo. “Los textiles tradicionales, como los hechos en Chiapas, no pueden ser usados en la calle. Entonces nosotros cambiamos el corte de la tela para hacerlos más usables. Los diseños pretenden inspirar a la gente a interesarse más por los orígenes de los textiles mexicanos y de impulsarlos a que visiten los lugares de los que son originarios. Y por supuesto, promover el turismo en México.”

Contar una historia es uno de los puntos fundamentales para la línea de artículos de lujo Pineda Covalin, cada diseño tiene una historia detrás. Ricardo apunta a las corbatas por ejemplo. A simple vista sólo parecen coloridas corbatas de seda, pero, si miras de cerca podrás ver que están decoradas con pequeños motivos de la Historia de México. “Ellas te cuentan la historia y entonces la persona que las usa se convierte en la historia”, dice Ricardo.

Entonces ¿qué es lo que hay en la tienda? “El futuro de Pineda Covalin es promover México a través de la escultura, la pintura, la naturaleza,” dice Ricardo. Como uno de los verdaderos pioneros de la moda de lujo en México, Pineda Covalin tiene un futuro brillante.

Social network sites, such as Facebook and Bebo, give top brands the perfect way to engage with younger clientele.

Twitter, the 140-character mode of converse, connects brands with everyone, from celebrities, designers and entrepreneurs to their aspiring followers. Blogs provide an instant, bang-up-to-the-minute source of fashion or brandsavvy information, while iPhone apps mean users really do have the world of luxury know-how at their fingertips.

That’s why some of the world’s most exclusive brands, such as Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, TAG Heuer, Rolex and Cartier, all now have a presence on Facebook. Become a fan and you can receive the latest product or store news, share photos of your favorite items with fellow fans, or ask questions such as where to find a particular must-have item. Most of the top brands are also on Twitter, which provides a similar interaction but in bite-size chunks.

It makes sense for the big brands to get in on the act: figures from the Luxury Institute in 2009 showed that 48% of luxury consumers (individuals earning over US$419,000 per annum) were on Facebook and 14% were on Twitter— figures that have surely risen since.

Yet does this new trend “dumb down” the image of luxury brands? Far from it. Some of the most exclusive labels have got sophisticated social networking down to a fine art. Estée

With its five-star hotels and luxury shopping centers, it’s hard to believe that only 40 years ago Cancún was an uninhabited stretch of unexplored beaches, jungle and mangroves. Today Cancún is one of Mexico’s top tourist destinations, with over three million people visiting every year. It has faced tough challenges, but the enthusiasm of the people who holiday, live and work in Cancún has helped to make it one of the most exciting cities in the world.

Cancún was earmarked as a purpose-built resort area in 1967. By 1970, development had begun on the Hotel Zone, with hotels, shopping centers, golf courses and marinas, to be linked to a residential area, Downtown, on the mainland with schools, hospitals and markets. The first hotels (Playa Blanca, Bojórquez and Cancún Caribe) had opened by 1974 and a new airport was ready to welcome tourists.

Cancún in the late 1970s and early 1980s was very different to the place we know today. Back then, it felt like a small Caribbean town—fishermen could be spotted catching fresh lobster in front of the hotel Cancún Dreams, and tourists were mostly wealthy older couples who would come every year and stay for a month. The horizon was filled with cranes, and the rate of construction was frantic.

Everything was to dramatically change in Cancún with the arrival of Hurricane Gilbert in September 1988. The Category 5 storm tore through the city, destroying the beach and wrecking hotels. Ironically, it would take another hurricane to inject the high-end luxury back into Cancún.

“After Hurricane Wilma in 2005, the Mexican government decided to take the city back to its roots and make it an upscale destination again,” remembers Begoña Gomez, the concierge at the Ritz-Carlton, who has lived in Cancún for 23 years. “Hotels upgraded their properties during the refurbishment, and this in turn attracted new investors, fine dining and exclusive shops, including Luxury Avenue.”

New hotels, the ME Cancún among them, introduced luxury spa facilities, and sophisticated tourists flooded the Hotel Zone once again.

By 2008, Cancún was back on top form, boasting 146 hotels, 453 restaurants and 2,000 shops in 12 shopping malls. The global economic downturn did not seem to be affecting tourism, and business was good. But this success was hit in April 2009 with the outbreak of swine flu in Mexico. There was an 85 per cent drop in tourist arrivals almost over night in Cancún, the Riviera Maya and Cozumel as health alerts kept people away. Happily, by July, the World Health Organization held a summit in Cancún and declared the area safe and secure for tourists.

There were also positive improvements in 2009 in the Hotel Zone, with the start of a beach recovery project to tackle the erosion that had shrunk the once bountiful beaches of the area. Costing over US$70 million, the 11.1km-long stretch of beach between Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc was replenished with 6.1m cubic meters of sand collected by dredging boats that sucked sand from the

So what is the secret of the enduring success of Cancún, and how has it managed to overcome its challenges? “The people of Cancún help it to survive,” explains Begoña Gomez. “We’ve had our ups and downs, but the tourists still come back. Instead of focusing on what we don’t have, we focus on what we can still build.” As repeat visitors to Cancún know, the hotels offer something new with each visit.

As the Hotel Zone has grown, so has Downtown.

Originally a residential area for the government officials, architects, construction workers and hotel staff who arrived from other parts of Mexico in the early 1970s to work on the Hotel Zone, it is now a city in its own right, with 500,000 residents. “We are blessed to be here,” says Tony Leeman, the Honorary Consul of Ireland, a Downtown resident since 1987. “It’s a great place to live because there is so much natural beauty within an hour’s drive away.”

En 2009 también hubo mejoras positivas en la zona hotelera, se inició un proyecto de recuperación de playa para hacer frente a la erosión que se estaba comiendo las otrora pródigas playas de la zona. Con un costo superior a los US$70 millones, la franja de playa de 11.1 kilómetros que va de Punta Cancún a Punta Nizuc se rellenó con 6.1 millones de metros cúbicos de arena recolectada por las dragas que la extraen del fondo del mar y la expulsan sobre la costa a través de tubos. Además de reconstruir las playas hasta un ancho de 40 metros, se han colocado espigones de concreto para proteger la arena y los expertos en erosión costera ayudarán a vigilar y conservar la costa en el futuro. ¿A qué se debe entonces el imperecedero éxito de Cancún, y cómo ha logrado sobreponerse a los desafíos? “La gente de Cancún la ayuda a sobrevivir,” explica Begoña Gómez. “Hemos tenido nuestros altibajos pero los turistas siguen viniendo. En lugar de pensar en lo que no tenemos, pensamos en lo que todavía podemos construir”. Quienes han visitado Cancún varias veces, saben que los hoteles ofrecen algo nuevo en cada visita.
