On November 14th, industry records were broken as Christie’s auctioned de GRISOGONO’s ground-breaking necklace, ‘The Art of de GRISOGONO, Creation 1’, at the landmark Magnificent Jewels sale in Geneva, with the necklace achieving a price of CHF 33,500,000 / US $ 33,705,994. This marks a new milestone for de GRISOGONO and is the largest ever emerald-cut diamond offered at auction. Founder and Creative Director of de GRISOGONO, Fawaz Gruosi, has guided the process from the cutting of the 404.20-carat rough diamond to the finished High Jewellery necklace, making this the house’s first involvement in the creation of a jewel of this stature, from mine to final masterpiece.

Now able to work with ever-more precious stones of both historic and geological significance thanks to a strategic partnership with Nemesis International, de GRISOGONO’s signature style of audacious glamour, rich colours, large volumes and baroque opulence, highlighted by an exquisite attention to detail, is set to rise to new levels of sublime luxury.

The Stone On the eve of 4th February 2016, in eastern Angola, the Lulo mine revealed its greatest treasure yet: a 404.20-carat rough diamond. To pay tribute to the day the country commemorates its long journey to independence, it was named the “4 de Fevereiro” and is the 27th biggest rough white diamond ever discovered. It is also the largest to be found in Angola, assuring its place in diamond history. Beyond its impressive size, colour and clarity, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in New York declared the rough stone to be a highly desirable Type IIA D-Colour with little or no nitrogen in its lattice structure. Type IIA diamonds, normally associated with the Golconda region of India, are believed to have formed deeper in the Earth’s mantle than other, less valuable diamonds and are highly valued for their clarity or limpid qualities.

The Cutting and Polishing Process For the next stage of its journey to stardom, the “4 de Fevereiro” travelled to New York, where it took 11 months to analyse, map, cleave, laser cut and polish the elegant 163.41-carat emeraldcut stone we see today.

The Creative Process In December 2016, the 163.41-carat diamond left New York and travelled to de GRISOGONO’s headquarters in Geneva. The challenge for Fawaz Gruosi and his team was to maintain the spirit of de GRISOGONO in a jewel worthy of this magnificent stone while not forgetting that it must be a wearable piece of jewellery of the utmost comfort. After two months, 50 different design options were reduced to just one: an asymmetric necklace with the 163.41-carat diamond as the centrepiece, enhanced with emerald-cut diamonds and emeralds. Fawaz Gruosi says: “I chose emeralds because I love the green colour and mixing it with other stones. The green gives great contrast and enhances both colours. And, being Italian, I am superstitious. Green means good luck - you will see a lot 26

Der Edelstein Am Vorabend des 4. Februar 2016 gab die Lulo Mine im östlichen Angola ihren bis dato grössten Schatz preis: einen 404,20 Karat schweren Rohdiamanten. Als Hommage an den Tag, an dem das Land seinen langen Weg in die Unabhängigkeit feiert, wurde er „4 de Fevereiro“ getauft. Er steht nicht nur an 27. Stelle der grössten weissen Rohdiamanten, die jemals gefunden wurden, sondern er ist ebenfalls der grösste, der je in Angola gefunden wurde, und wird einen ganz besonderen Platz in der Geschichte einnehmen. Professor Michael Fried: There have been many important developments in gastroenterology in the last few decades. Gastrointestinal endoscopy has been developed to an extent that precancerous lesions can now be detected with a high sensitivity and tumours in the oesophagus, the stomach and the colon can now be removed by interventional endoscopy with specialised techniques (e.g. EMR; endoscopic mucosal resection). These developments can often replace surgery and can cure the patient with relatively minimal intervention. Several of these techniques have been pioneered at the University Hospital Zurich during my directorship of the Department of Gastroenterology. Furthermore, the development of a new class of drugs, the biologics (for example Infliximab, a TNF-alpha blocker), made it possible to markedly influence the course of previously incurable inflammatory bowel diseases such Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. We were involved in the first multinational studies using these drugs. Another important aspect is the medical treatment of Hepatitis C, a worldwide prevalent chronic liver infection which may ultimately lead to hepatic cancer. With the development of highly effective new therapies combining several antiviral agents this disease can, for the first time, be cured with a probability of more than 95% without any significant side effects. When was the last time you treated yourself to a Cuban cigar? Quite recently perhaps? Let me guess: it was probably a Partagás, Montecristo or Romeo & Julieta; or maybe even a Cohiba. How do I know? Because I recently visited Havana and was astonished to find that these cigars were completely sold out in the Casa del Habano outlets, the only shops where you can buy original Cubanmade cigars. 68

Excellent labels like Sancho Panza, Diplomaticos, Por Larrañaga, El Rey del Mundo, Vegueros and others had been largely ignored by most tourists. I was surprised by this and asked myself “When was the last time you smoked a Diplomaticos or Sancho Panza?” To my shame, I had to admit that it was a long time ago. That’s how the idea for this article was born. In forthcoming issues, I am planning to report in a fairly informal way on some of the lesser known Cuban cigar labels. This time, I’m going to look at three boutique brands that offer just as much quality as the usual suspects, but that have a less substantial marketing budget. Take “Diplomaticos” for example: This brand can often be quite hard to find among cigar specialists and in lounges. It was first introduced after the Cuban revolution. It was the lighter and less expensive variant of the Montecristo and was specially produced for the French market because the French preferred slightly lighter cigars. The format names were adapted from the Montecristo family (No 1 to No 5), while the format names also correspond to the formats of Montecristo cigars. In terms of quality, they can

What are the guiding principles to collect in this context of radical uncertainty? For the gallerist, good art has “layers”, and should be the target of collectors. Alain Servais uses a key question: “’is there a chance that someone will want to look at this in 30 years?’ If it is obviously ‘no’, then I steer away. The difficulty is to find pieces for which the answer is ‘yes’.” He “collects one or two early pieces, closer to the origin of an idea and often more interesting.” When should a collection end? Collectors want to challenge themselves. By this principle, they will also stop. “When there is no direction, no challenge, then it is time to conclude”, explains Alain Servais.
