LEOPOLIS GRAND PRIX 2013 June 21–23, Svobody Ave., Triangle along Vitovskoho St., Stryiska St. and Hvardiyska St. “Leopolis Grand Prix” is an international festival of vintage cars, which has been held in Lviv each year since 2010 by the autofan-club “ZAZ Kozak” along with the Lublin auto club (Poland). A number of events traditionally take place during the festival: a vintage car exhibition and auto racing, showcasing cars from all over Ukraine and abroad; car rides for children, navigational quests, Batiar-style Party, Commander’s Ball, Old-timer’s Elegancy and Fashion Competition etc. A highlight of the event will be the vintage cars race competition on the historic Lviv Triangle road circuit – along Vitovskoho St., Stryiska St. and Hvardiyska St. The road itself – made of basalt pavement blocks has remained virtually unchanged since the first official “Leopolis Grand Prix” race of 1932 and this year, the race is dedicated to 81st Anniversary of the 1st Leopolis Grand Prix race. The official record of best lap time on the “Lviv Triangle” road circuit – 2 minutes 2 seconds and 5 hundredth of a second (2’02,5’’) was established on June 11th 1933, by Eugen Bjǿrnstad, Champion of Norway, driving an Alfa Romeo BC-2300. All festival participating cars are divided into 5 points classes (races A, B, C, D) and 1 additional “ZAZ 965” (Race E) as follows: Race A (pre-1946) – sport and race cars manufactured before 31.12.1946. Race В (pre-1946) – non-sport cars manufactured before 31.12.1946. Race C (after 1946) – non-sport cars manufactured after 31.12.1946. Race D (after 1946) – sport and race cars manufactured after 31.12.1946. ЛЕОПОЛІС ГРАН-ПРІ 2013 21–23 червня, Проспект Свободи; трикутник вул. Вітовського, вул. Стрийська, вул. Гвардійська Міжнародний фестиваль старовинних автомобілів «Леополіс Гран-прі”, проводиться у Львові щорічно з 2010 року зусиллями Авто-фан-клубу “ЗАЗ Козак» і Люблінського автоклубу з Польщі. Ряд заходів традиційно відбудеться під час фестивалю: виставка і перегони старовинних автомобілів, демонстрація автомобілів з усієї України і з-за кордону; автомобільні прогулянки для дітей, навігаційні квести, батярська вечірка, командорський бал, конкурс автомобільної ретро-елеганції та моди тощо. Основною подією фестивалю стануть перегони старовинних автомобілів на історичній трасі львівського трикутника – по вул. Вітовського, вгору по Стрийській і вниз по Гвардійській. Львівська бруківка залишилися практично незмінною з часів перших офіційних перегонів «Леополіс Гран-прі» 1932 року, хоча відтоді минуло немало-небагато – 81 рік. Офіційний рекорд на «Львівському трикутнику» встановив 11 червня 1933 року чемпіон Норвегії Еуген Б´єрнстад, промчавши на своєму автомобілі Alfa Romeo BC2300 одне коло за дві хвилини, дві й п’ять сотих секунди. Всі учасники фестивалю підрозділяються на 4 класи (А, В, С, D) і один додатковий – “ЗАЗ 965” (E) наступним чином: Заїзд А (до 1946 р.) – спортивні та гоночні автомобілі, виготовлені до 31.12.1946. “LVIV ON A PLATE” II GASTRONOMIC FESTIVAL June 28–30, Rynok Square (northern side), Art Palace (15 Kopernyka St.) If you are one of those people who like to indulge themselves in gastronomic delights, then Lviv is the place to be from June 28–30th. The 2nd “Lviv on a Plate” food festival will offer its attendees numerous entrées, traditional homemade beverages and seasonal delicacies from local farms. During the three days of the Festival, Leopolitans and guests of the city will have the wonderful possibility to visit the food fair “Savour the Carpathians” and taste traditional local dishes, beverages and regional seasonal produce. Among the participants of the fair will be confectionaries, bistros, patisseries, restaurants, and bakeries from Lviv and the Lviv region as well as 30 food-producers from Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions. Specialties of the “Savour the Carpathians” fair will be the exhibition of brynza and other cheeses, herbal teas, jams, fruit juices, honey and meat products. The main event during the festival – a Gala dinner for 300 guests will take place in the open-air gallery of the Lviv Art Palace. The Gala dinner will showcase dishes and beverages made by Lviv’s best chefs according to special recipes using local products. “The uniqueness of the festival lies in the unity of restaurateurs, local producers, experts and specialists in gastronomy, and gourmets who direct their efforts in reviving the local cuisine, finding new recipes, promoting consumption of highquality local produce and improving customer service,” said the Director of the Gastronomic Festival “Lviv on a Plate”, Andriy Sydor. Among the participants of the festival will be hoteliers, representatives of the food industry, public officials, tour operators, who will taste traditional Galician dishes, promote high-quality local produce, discuss the development of the tourism industry of the city and ways of improving customer service. Коперника, 15) Якщо Ви один з тих, хто любить потішити себе гастрономічними шедеврами, то Львів – саме те місце, і саме цей час – 28–30 червня 2013 р. Вже вдруге гастрономічний фестиваль «Львів на тарілці» запропонує своїм відвідувачам численні страви і закуски, традиційні домашні напої та сезонні делікатеси з місцевих ферм. Протягом трьох днів фестивалю львів’яни та гості міста матимуть чудову нагоду відвідати продовольчий ярмарок «Смак Карпат» і скуштувати традиційних місцевих страв, напоїв та регіональних сезонних продуктів. VII INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL FANS FESTIVAL EUROFAN-2013 During June 20–23rd 2013, a traditional international fan-festival for football supporters from different European countries will be held in Lviv. The event will be organized by NGO “Karpaty” together with partners, who have been actively supporting this sports holiday for 7 years. This year, the festival will gather 28 fan teams from 23 European countries - “Hamburg” (Germany), “Copenhagen” (Denmark), “Mechelen” (Belgium), “Zenit”, “Lokomotiv” (both - Russia), “Dinamo Bucharest” (Romania), “Dinamo Minsk” (Belarus), “Dinamo Tbilisi” (Georgia), “Slovacko” (Czech Republic), “Spartak Myjava” (Slovakia), “Zimbru” (Moldova), “Karpaty” (Ukraine) as well as national supporters’ teams of the following countries: Italy, Netherlands, Croatia, Ireland, Sweden, Slovenia, Wales, Serbia, Northern Ireland, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Poland, Ukraine. In addition to the exciting football tournament, participants of the festival will have a wonderful opportunity to join sightseeing tours, fun-filled parties and a poker tournament. Within “Eurofan 2013” the charity event “From European fans to Lviv children” will take place, where representatives of football fan teams will hand over humanitarian supplies (sportswear, toys, sweets etc.) for children from orphanages, boarding schools and hospitals in the Lviv region. ANIMA WOMEN’S FESTIVAL June 15–16, Hotel George (1 Mitskevycha Square) A woman should be satisfied, if she isn’t, she has to do something about it – that’s the main idea of the Anima Women’s Festival which will take place in Lviv from June 15–16th 2013. The Anima Festival and the school that was founded in the spring 2010 in Kyiv just for women have immediately become a hit. “Up to 2,500 women and even men come to our festival each year, some even take the broader courses in the Anima school,” says Oksana Pavlychenko, the head of the festival’s organizing committee. Recent years have seen a flood of women’s festivals that call for gender equality and independence. The Anima Women’s Festival instead suggests that women “open up to their sexuality,” “find their inner woman” or “become their man’s inspiration.” Even though there are many workshops devoted to women in business and career advancement, most of them still do not answer the basic question of how to seduce a man. The program of the festival will feature over 50 master-classes, seminars, lectures, round-table discussions and trainings dedicated to male and female relationships, they will offer advice to women on how to look, move and even speak, to be more attractive to a man. The annual Art Pole folk festival of music, theatre and art is taking a little detour this year and heading out of the village and towards the banks of the marvelous Southern Buh River. Having already confirmed their attendance, Fantazio (FR), Red Cardell (FR), Faarao Pirttikangas (FI), Mavigiz (TR), Evolution Dejavu (CZ), Napra (HU), NagUal (BY), uSSSy (RU), Miąźsz (PL), Enchanted Hunters (PL), these groups are guaranteed to put on a good show, while more spectacular performances are sure to be added by Ukrainian bands Hych Orchestra, Perkalaba, Gudaku Village Band, PUSHKiN Kiev Klezmer Band, Yoriy Klots, Krapka, Cherry Band and many more. The music Art Pole presents its guests is always a good reason to take part in the festival, but so are the numerous and wide-variety of workshops they offer, crafts and health and wellness classes. This year as well, The King and The Corpse (UK) theatrical art group will attend the festival and many others. KARBIDO. AUDIO PERFORMANCE “THE TABLE” June 19, Beginning: 19:30. Les Kurbas Theatre (3 Kurbas St.) The winner of the PerthNow Best Performance Award at the Fringe World Festival will present to Lviv’s music fans a unique musical performance “The Table”. Karbido’s “The Table” has proven to be an international sensation, using a seemingly ordinary table to shift the boundaries of the musical imagination, it turns out to be an extraordinary musical delight with four instrumentalists playing a table using sticks, bows, knives, hands and a mixing desk. The virtuosic experimental band from Wrocław is made up of Paweł Czepułkowski, Igor Gawlikowski, Michał Litwiniec and Marek Otwinowski along with Jacek Fedorowicz (sound editor) and Tomasz Sikora (light effects). The group’s eponymous instrument is an electro-acoustic wooden table with built-in converters and microphones having outstanding and unusual acoustic properties; by tapping it, blowing through the drilled holes or nudging its strings, using coins, wine glasses or their fists, the four musicians perform covers of various classics. It is difficult to define Karbido’s musical genre however they can play everything from improvised jazz to Belarussian folk to percussive trance. In addition, the whole musical sensation is amplified by the quadraphonic surround sound system arranged so that the ‘wandering’ sound encompasses the audience near the stage. The 3rd Rurysko Festival of alternative music will take place on July 6-7th 2013, in the city of Berezhany, Ternopil oblast. The program of the festival will feature more than 20 musical bands performing on two stages. This year’s event will showcase no less than two headliners per day, and so far, two recognized Ukrainian rock bands – Kozak System and Los Colorados – have confirmed their participation in the event. Another rock band from Belarus is expected to submit their confirmation shortly as well as participants from other countries. In addition, the organizers are planning to set up a literary stage where some of Ukraine’s most popular writers can take the floor. Another highlight of the event will be the ethno-wedding. The bride and groom, dressed in traditional outfits, will have to sign their wedding papers right on the stage in front of thousands of the festival’s guests. SHYPOT HIPPY FEST 2013 July 1–10, 2013. Hippy camp near the Shypot Waterfall outside Uzhgorod Shypot – a 14-meter high waterfall and an infamously beautiful place which annually attracts many people to Ukraine’s oldest hippy festival. Several like – minded individuals who wanted to create something new and challenging for Ukrainian hippies first launched the original festival in 1992. However, this was not the real beginning, the start goes back even further to the1970s, when this place was chosen as a summer haven during the hippie era in the USSR. Most likely, this tradition came from Latvia, where local “informal people” gathered at the river Gauja. But with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence of borders informal people were divided, and some of them began to meet at the Shypot Waterfall. Nowadays, the Shypot Festival has become quite popular and brings together many people from different social and cultural backgrounds, from several different countries. Traditionally the festival is split into a number of themed days: Children’s Day, The Miss Shypot Beauty Contest, and Ivan Kupala holiday celebrations complete with huge fires and a lot of fun.
ШИПОТ – 2013 1–10 липня. Табір хіппі біля водоспаду Шипот недалеко від Ужгорода Шипот – 14-метровий водоспад у казково красивому місці, яке щорічно приваблює специфічну публіку на, ймовірно, найстаріший фестиваль хіппі в України. Цей оригінальний фестиваль вперше був запущений в 1992 році кількома однодумцями, які хотіли створити щось нове і цікаве для українських хіппі. Однак, це не початок, початок був ще в 1970-ті роки, коли це місце обрали діти-квіти своїм літнім притулком в епоху СРСР. Скоріш за все, ця традиція прийшла з Латвії, де місцеві “неформали” збиралися біля річки Гауя. Але з розпадом Радянського Союзу і появи кордонів неформали були розділені, і деякі з них стали зустрічатися біля водоспаду Шипот. Сьогодні фестиваль Шипот став дуже популярним і збирає багато людей різних соціальних і культурних традицій, а також з декількох країн. Традиційно фестиваль розділено на кілька тематичних днів: День захисту дітей, конкурс краси Міс Шипот, і свято Іван Купала з великими ватрами, навколо яких всім дуже весело.

LVIV’s BOTANiCAL TREASURE
T
he Botanical Garden is one of the oldest educational and scientific research institutions of the Lviv National Ivan Franko University in Ukraine. The main task of the garden was to offer students lessons on morphology and the systematic teaching of plants at the University. Today the Botanical Garden is located in Lviv in two different areas, 44 Cheremshiny St. (which covers an area of 16.5 ha) and at 4 Cyril and Methodius St. (occuping 2 hectares). The idea of creating a botanical garden in Lviv first appeared in 1784, when Professor Shivereck founded a small botanical garden at the former Dominican Monastery on Kopernika St., which unfortunately did not exist very long. Later in 1823, it was Professor Vittman who made another attempt and created a botanical garden in the city’s suburbs, which also didn’t last long. Professor Lobazhevski founded the present Botanical Gardens in 1852, on the northeastern slope of Kalicha hill in the old Trinitarians Garden (the Cyril & Methodius St.). Nowadays, greenhouses and a little dendropark can be found at this location. Since its creation till present day, the garden has seen ongoing work on compiling exotic plant collections in hothouses and special areas. Today the garden is famous for its collection of orchids and their hybrids. One can admire these beautiful flowers in the period of their blossoming. A new garden, which is currently located at Cheremshyna Street was founded in 1911 by Karl Bauer, also the creator of the project at the Lychakiv cemetery and Ivan Franko park, who was also a gardener in Lviv in the

second half of 19th c. Thanks to his efforts and practices, the Botanical Gardens of the Lviv National University became well-known even beyond the borders of Ukraine. To enlarge the Botanical Garden territory in 1911 the University purchased an additional 4,5 ha of land in Tsetnerivka from the owner, who also was a huge fan of decorative gardening. Since 1787, on the newly purchased grounds, grew American Pine trees, Acacias, Red leaf Beeches, Ash trees, different Maple trees, as well as a variety of lawns and flowerbeds. Many of those trees, some of which are several hundred years old, have been well preserved until today. Thanks to the advantageous landscape – the presence of a pond, half-bog valley, slopes of different exposition, a dry heightened plateau with a plot created by artificial fragments of natural plantings, storage lakes, bogs, meadows, a meadow-steppe, a wooded-steppe, different kinds of forests, plains and forest, subalpine and alpine belts of the Carpathians in the garden. Under Professor Kulchynskyi’s direction in 1924 it was planned to create a museumgarden of local flora. From 1924-1939, numerous special expeditions were conducted in order to gather a variety of rare seeds and plants from across Ukraine, which were brought back to the garden and planted, recreating artificial landscapes. Before World War II about 2 thousand species of natural flora were gathered and were used to create natural plant communities within the garden. During WW II, the garden suffered great damage: sensitive greenhouse plants perished
as well as collections of ornamental plants, the amount of steppe plants decreased and the alpine and subalpine plants almost completely disappeared. Immediately after the end of WW II, renovation work began in the Botanical Gardens. Over time, the territory of the garden at 44 Cheremshyny St. increased to 104 ha, which were covered with forests from the territory of Armenian bishops as well as the territory that used to belong to former owner Bohdanowych. There were sandy slopes, partly covered with grass plants and bushes, partly with a beech forest, mixed with hornbeam and local oaks. Since 1998, the garden has 5 scientific sections: a section of tropical and subtropical flora, a section of dendrology, that of herbaceous flora and cultural flora and a section for the physiology and biochemistry of plants. During the last 50 years the garden’s collections were greatly enhanced by various species of plants and today the total number is over 5000 items. The garden takes special pride in its collections of heritage plants (those aged over 100 years old), among which are the Rhododendron collection, which is today the biggest attraction at the Lviv Botanic Garden. Each month, the Lviv Botanical Garden organizes an ‘Open Doors” day, during which Leopolitans and guests of the city can visit the gardens free of charge, admire the beautiful flora and enjoy a variety of entertainment programs. THE FUTURE OF STORYTELLING:
Looking at the Children’s Publishing Market in Ukraine
S
tories are a part of every culture, every generation and every family. All that changes is how we share them. After attending the Lviv International Children’s Book Festival, I started thinking about whether our children will read stories the same way we did as we grew up. It seems that every few generations there is a fundamental breakthrough in how we exchange our stories. Was it the invention of paint in our cave days, the advent of the printing press in the Middle Ages, the popularity of the paperback novel in the last century, or the proliferation of electronic media that we see today, the fact that people love a good story doesn’t change; it’s only the medium that differs. So just what is in store for the book industry? Will our children read differently than we have? What can the children of Ukraine expect? In this month’s article, Lviv Today explores the future of the children’s publishing industry in Ukraine. Surely most readers will remember growing up in a time when you had to find a landbased phone line if you wanted to make a phone call, you needed to go to the library and find the right book if you wanted information, and you needed to watch a TV programme when it aired if you wanted to see it at all. With the advent of the internet

and mobile computing, these experiences are foreign to children today. A phone is in one’s pocket, the internet has all the answers, and you can watch your favourite TV programme on the TV, internet, or even the phone in your pocket. But just how do these technological advancements affect book publishing? Are the days numbered for our traditional hardcover friends?
E-readering breakthrough
Certainly there is a growing use of e-readers – devices that allow you to carry an entire library in something that can fit in your jacket pocket. For example, as early as 2011 electronic titles for Microsoft’s Kindle e-reader were already outselling hardcover novels 3 to 1 and were also outpacing paperback novels. Moving stories from the paper to the screen is only the beginning though. Imagine reading a story as if it were a Wikipedia page, where all it takes is a click of a word and you could see pictures of the street where the story is set, find out background information on the characters, or read book reviews from newspapers across the globe. In fact, this is already available from companies such as Oceanhouse. Technology has also allowed us to move beyond reading only words. For example, instead of reading the lyrics of a song in a story, now all you
need to do is click a link and a music video will start playing so you can hear the song instead. These advancements lend themselves very nicely to the children’s book market. For example, instead of just reading words, young children can now press a button, hear the word, see it pop up and do a little dance, and even be tested as to whether they are pronouncing it properly. Another company has developed software that allows you to record yourself reading a story so that your child hears your voice as she reads. This is just the beginning. Companies have already tapped into the smartphone application market, with hundreds of different reading apps. In addition to the learn-to-read apps, other apps popular with children include the choose-your-own-adventure series where a child reads a story and makes decisions for the characters involved while trying to solve a mystery. The possibilities are really only limited by our imaginations. So how do all these technological improvements affect the children’s book market here in Ukraine? Before answering that, let’s first take a look at the Ukrainian market. Children’s books are the second most popular genre purchased in Ukraine after fiction. Unfortunately, Ukrainian language books published by Ukrainian publishing houses offer an unreasonably low proportion of tiLVIV TODAY | June 2013
Lviv OPINION tles offered for sale. The Association of Publishers and Booksellers estimates that only 13% of literature is published in Ukraine and in Ukrainian. This is primarily due to the massive influx of Russian literature and is especially pronounced in the children’s book genre. For example, check your own library at home and see how many children’s stories you have that were published in Russia compared to Ukraine. Or ask your child to name his favourite story or character to see just how much influence and popularity Russian literature holds. Several reasons account for this. First, as the Russian market is nearly three times larger than the Ukrainian market, publishing houses can publish larger orders which bring down prices. There are import duties in place, but Russian books often make it to the Ukrainian market by evading the duties says Ivan Malkovych, president of one of the leading children’s publishing houses in Ukraine – A-Ba-Ba-Ha-La-Ma-Ha. A second concern surrounds the issue of quality. Like finding healthy foods that your kids find tasty so that they want to eat healthy, we need to present stories that will appeal to our children if we want them to want to read. With much fewer publishing houses than in Russia, it can be difficult for Ukrainian publishing houses to match the quality of their Russian counterparts. Finally, a culture of reading is still only emerging in Ukraine. For example, as of 2007, there were only 370 bookstores in the entire country. For comparison, Canada, which has a population that is roughly equivalent to Ukraine, has over 2000 stores while Russia has over 3000.

This is something that Lviv’s own lyrical superstar, Okean Elzy’s Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, took note of when he donated $10,000 to a charity devoted to distributing new children’s books to orphanages and libraries around the country. Another significant factor in the industry is the need for stricter enforcement of tariffs on the im-

Overall, the Ukrainian children’s book market is relatively small but has significant growth potential. Care is needed in protecting the market from being overrun by Russian literature. has shown great growth in quality over the last few years which has been matched by an increase in the number of bookstores across the country. E-readers are becoming a more common site and some Ukrainian companies are entering the world of electronic publishing. While Ukrainian children will likely still grow up learning Russian tales, the likelihood of there being quality Ukrainian tales alongside is ever-increasing. While protecting the market is vital, it should be remembered that Ukraine is not alone in trying to protect its literature from foreign competition. Other examples include American literature in the Canadian market or British literature in the Irish market. What is important is that there are increased opportunities for Ukrainian publishers to sell their products in Ukraine and continued growth in quality. As Okean Elzy has proven, if the product is strong it is possible for Ukrainian culture to succeed even in the Russian market. As far as the Ukrainian market adapting to emerging technologies goes, so long as smartphones, tablets and e-readers continue to proliferate it can be expected that Ukrainian publishers and other companies will adapt. Traditional hard/soft cover literature will still be around, but our children will have a bevy of other opportunities to read, learn and enjoy stories.
While some of the statistics may seem bleak, the industry does have some bright prospects. For example, according to Alexander Afonin, President of the Ukrainian Association of Publishers and Book Distributors, the number of children’s literature publications in Ukraine last year was 2554. Compare that number to 2011 when 1282 were published or to 2005 when only 787 books were published and you can see a clear upward trend. In addition, Ukraine has been well represented at the International Youth Library’s White Raven Awards recently with 5 books being honoured over the last 3 years, including The Tale About the Old Lion by Lviv’s own publishing house Staroho Leva. In fact, there are several publishing houses that are regularly producing high-quality children’s literature year after year including, A-BA-BAHA-LA-MA-HA, Grani-T, and Bohdan. Their books can be found at new bookstores popping up around Ukraine, which are more and more resembling Western establishments with tables and chairs for reading and sometimes even a restaurant inside. This is where the government can help. According to a national survey conducted by the Fund for Central and Eastern European Book Projects, the Government of Ukraine can significantly impact the industry through purchasing books from Ukrainian producers for schools LVIV TODAY | June 2013
What’s Next?
So how is the Ukrainian market adapting to the emerging technologies? Will we see an e-reader in every person’s hands by the end of the decade? Likely not, but there are a few products available for the Ukrainian market. There are a number of e-reader options available, including the Kindle and other tablets. Kyiv-based company the Atlantic Project produces educational games for children on subjects that include Ukrainian history, animals of Ukraine, and notable Ukrainian people. The company animates the software and works with the Institute of International Relations at Shevchenko State University to ensure its contents are thoroughly vetted for errors. Interbaby was the first Ukrainian company to develop an electronic book specially designed for children. The unique, child-friendly designed tablet features over 20 built-in illustrated audio stories and the

SPECTACULAR MUSICAL FEAST During May 14 – June 9th 2013, Lviv will host the XXXII International “Virtuosi” Music Festival. Originially launched in May of 1981, by the initiative of the Lviv Philharmonic Society Theatre, and is currently one of the greatest cultural-musical events in Western Ukraine. This year’s festival, will traditionally provide music lovers with the wonderful possibility to attend over 30 concerts and listen to classical compositions performed at their best. The event will showcase performances of world famous musicians –Boris Bloch (piano), Antonio Amenduni (flute), Kirill Rodin (cello), Ilya Grubert (violin), Arkadiy Shilkloper (trumpet), Olga Pasichnyk (soprano), Natalia Kovalyova (soprano) and conductors – Krzysztof Penderecki, Robert Hanson, Fakhraddin Kerimov, Misha Katz, presenting a variety of genres and musical trends.

VII МІЖНАРОДНИЙ ДИТЯЧИЙ ФЕСТИВАЛЬ
The VII International Children Festival took place in Lviv on May 17– 19, 2013. The main events of this book reading festival were held in Lviv’s Art Palace and showcased literary readings and autograph sessions by recognized children’s literature writers from Belarus, Poland, Switzerland, the UK, and Ukraine. Among the festival’s special guests was Ian Whybrow, a British book writer, who authored more than 100 books for children. Ian Whybrow is known for his books “Harry and the Bucketful” a Dinosaurs series and “Little Wolf’s Book of Badness”. The latter has been made into an award-winning TV movie in 2003. Polish writer Joanna Jagiello was another special guest of the book reading festival. During the VII International Children Festival prizes were bestowed to Ukraine’s best young reader, alongside numerous exciting literary quests and special events, like Book From a Star and A Night at the Library. The event organizers did their best in convincing participants and guests of the Festival that reading a book is not only useful, but also very interesting and tons of fun.
У Львові 17–19 травня вже всьоме відбувся Міжнародний дитячий фестиваль. Основні події цього фестивалю проходили у Палаці мистецтв, де відбувались літературні читання і автограф-сесії популярних дитячих письменників з Білорусі, Польщі, Швейцарії, Великобританії та України. Серед спеціальних гостей фестивалю був, зокрема, Ян Уайброу, британський письменник, перу якого належать понад 100 книжок для дітей. Цей автор відомий своїми книгами «Гаррі і повне відро», серією про динозаврів та «Капосна книжка Маленького Вовчика». Остання була екранізована на телебаченні у 2003 році, і отримала кілька нагород. Іншим спеціальним гостем фестивалю стала польська письменниця Іоанна Ягелло. У рамках VII Міжнародного дитячого фестивалю було також вручення нагород найкращому молодому читачеві Україні, а також численні захоплюючі літературні квести і спеціальні заходи, як от “Книга від зірки” і “Ніч у бібліотеці”. Організатори фестивалю зробили все можливе аби переконати учасників та гостей фестивалю, що читання книг – це не тільки корисно, але й дуже цікаво і дуже весело.

Spectacular “Cheremosh” (Edmonton)
У Палаці культури ім. Гната Хоткевича 21 травня 2013 відбулось захоплююче свято танцю – танцювальний поєдинок між ансамблем “Черемош” з Едмонтону, Канада і ансамблем “Черемош” зі Львова. Ансамбль українського танцю «Черемош» з Едмонтону в ході гастролей на Україні у травні цього року виступав у Києві, Івано-Франківську, Чернівцях та Львові. У серії унікальних концертів танцюристи канадського “Черемоша” виступали разом з місцевими українськими народними танцювальними ансамблями, в тому числі із заслуженим академічним Буковинським ансамблем пісні й танцю з Чернівців та Національним академічним гуцульським ансамблем пісні й танцю «Гуцулія» з Івано–Франківська. Майже тритижневий тур продемонстрував українським глядачам високий професійний рівень українського народного танцю, який зберігся і примножився в українській канадській діаспорі. Львів’яни та гості міста отримали чудову нагоду на власні очі побачити цей небувалий танцювальний поєдинок канадських і українських артистів. Brilliant “Cheremosh” (Lviv)
DANCE BATTLE On May 21st 2013, the Hnat Khotkevych Palace of Culture hosted a spectacular dance-concert-battle between Cheremosh (Edmonton) and Cheremosh (Lviv). The Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Company from Edmonton, Canada toured Ukraine in May 2013 performing in Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi and Lviv. At a series of unique concerts, dancers of Cheremosh – a leader in Ukrainian-Canadian dance in Canada, performed with local Ukrainian folk dance ensembles including the Honoured Academic Bukovinian Song and Dance Company (Chernivtsi) and the Hutsul National Academic Song and Dance Ensemble “Hutzulia” (Ivano-Frankivsk). The 18-day long tour showcased for Ukrainian dance fans, the professional level of Ukrainian folk dance which has been upheld by the Ukrainian-Canadian diaspora. Leopolitans and guests of the city got a wonderful chance to admire the incredibly entertaining spectacle performed by Cheremosh (Edmonton) and Cheremosh (Lviv).

JOURNALISTS’ DAY AT THE BATTLEFIELD Officials of the Lviv Army Academy named after Hetman Petro Sahaydachnyi invited representatives of local media as well as colleagues from Crimea to visit Europe’s biggest army target range in Yavoriv, as a special gift, in honour of National Journalists’ Day (June 6). The head of the Lviv Regional State Administration, Viktor Shemchuk, together with journalists got acquainted with the target range’s infrastructure and checked their shooting skills from various guns – pistols, automatic rifles, machine-guns. Also, at the Yavoriv armor training battlefield visitors got the exciting chance to test driving ranges on tanks and armoured vehicles. ДЕНЬ ЖУРНАЛІСТА НА ПОЛІ БОЮ До Дня журналіста 6 червня керівництво Львівської академії сухопутних військ ім. гетьмана Петра Сагайдачного запросило представників місцевих ЗМІ, а також їх колег з Криму відвідати найбільший у Європі військовий полігон в Яворові. Голова Львівської обласної державної адміністрації, Віктор Шемчук разом з журналістами ознайомився з інфраструктурою полігону і був присутній під час стрільби з усіх видів вогнепальної зброї – пістолетів, автоматів, кулеметів. Також гості полігону в цей день мали змогу проїхатись полігоном на танках і бронемашинах. Крім того, відвідувачі довідались про новий навчальний курс академії – дайвінг, який нещодавно додали до програми.

Red Bull Flugtag, an event featuring enthusiasts crashing planes they made at home, and human-powered flying machines, which roll off a ramp into water with the hope of achieving flight, took place in Kyiv on June 2, 2013. The event attracted a huge audience of 75 000 spectators, 34 teams from all over Ukraine – Yalta, Kyiv, Odessa, Vinnytsa, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk, Nezhin, Chernivtsi and Lviv! Participants had to fling themselves through the air in pursuit of the dream of flight. The 1st place winning team – “Move flippers” (Kharkiv) soared through the sky for 17 meters, team “Wunder Pancer” (Kyiv) won 2nd place with a result of 10 meters, while 3rd place prize went to team “Obezyanki na mamke” (Dnepropetrovsk). Unfortunately, Lviv’s team did not earn any prizes, however team members are ready to try their luck next year!
Red Bull Flugtag – це змагання ентузіастів саморобних літаків без двигуна, який рухається виключно людською силою. Неймовірні “літальні” апарати брали розбіг по спеціальній рампі над водою в надії пролетіти якнайдалі в Києві 2 червня 2013 р. Незважаючи на дощ, захід на березі Дніпра зібрав величезну аудиторію – близько 75 тисяч глядачів і 34 команди з усієї України – Ялти, Києва, Одеси, Вінниці, Харкова, Донецька, Дніпропетровська, Ніжина, Чернівців та Львова. За намагання здійснити мрію про політ 1-е місце отримала команда «Воруши ластами» (Харків) , що подолала відстань 17 метрів, на другому місці команда «Вундер Панцер» (Київ) з результатом 10 метрів, на третьому – “Обезьянки на мамке” (Дніпропетровськ). На жаль, команда зі Львова не отримала ніяких призів, проте члени команди знову готові спробувати щастя в наступному році!

On May 18th 2013, the First Equestrian Festival, organized by the Regional Equestrian Sports Federation was held in Lviv, the event took place at the equestrian school “Burevisnyk” and attracted a great audience. The main aim of the festival was to popularize equestrianism and an active lifestyle for grown ups and children. Within the festival’s program competitions took place in which the best athletes competed in a hurdle race and dressage for the Lviv Cup trophy. The winner of the competition was Volodymyr Dulya, (Horse Oxford). Also during the festival there was a fair-exhibition as well as entertaining shows by equestrian schools, leading athletes, master classes, lectures and much more.
На базі львівської кінно-спортивної школи «Буревісник» 18 травня 2013 р. було проведено перший фестиваль кінного спорту, організований регіональною Федерацією кінного спорту, який викликав велику зацікавленість серед молоді, дітей та їх батьків. Основною метою фестивалю була популяризація кінного спорту і активного способу життя серед дорослих і дітей. У програмі фестивалю найкращі спортсмени виступили у змаганнях з перегонів з перешкодами та виїздки за Кубок Львова. Переможцем змагань став жокей Володимир Дуля на коні Оксфорд. Також у програмі фестивалю відбулась виставка-ярмарок, розважальні покази майстерності учнів та викладачів кінних шкіл і провідних спортсменів, майстер-класи для всіх бажаючих, лекції та багато іншого.

«ЛЮТИН» СОЦІАЛЬНИЙ ФЕСТИВАЛЬ
“LUTYN” SOCIAL FESTIVAL During May 17–18th 2013, the III Social Festival “Lutyn” took place in Stryi and Lviv. Main aim of the event was to popularize volunteerism in the sphere of integration of children and youth with special needs into society, as well as providing support to families in need. This year, the festival was truly international as the event was joined by participants from Poland – the representatives of social service organization “5 Domu Pomocy Społecznej w Łodzi”. Performances of creative children from Lviv and students of the tele-centre “Kadryky” entertained the guests of the event. The festival’s program showcased numerous master-classes, film screenings, sport competitions, Kozak cuisine tasting and much more. The festival’s presenter was Andriy Fertsak, who charmed the audience with witty humor. The highlight of the festival was the performance by rock-band “Mary” and special guest Vladyslav Levitskyy.
У Стрию та Львові 17–18 травня 2013 відбувся III соціальний фестиваль «Лютин». Основною метою заходу стала популяризація діяльності добровольців в інтеграції дітей та молоді з особливими потребами у суспільство, а також надання підтримки малозабезпеченим сім’ям. Цього року фестиваль був дійсно міжнародним – до нього приєдналися учасники з Польщі – представники громадської організації «П’ятого будинку соціальної допомоги» з м. Лодзя. Гостей заходу розважали виступами дитячі творчі колективи зі Львова і учасники телевізійного центру «Кадрики». До програми фестивалю увійшли численні майстер-класи, кінопокази, спортивні змагання, дегустації козацької кухні та багато іншого. Ведучим фестивалю був веселий і дотепний, як завжди, Андрій Ферстак. On May 16th 2013, the Hotel-Restaurant Complex “Warsaw” (Malekhiv, Lviv region) hosted a charity event – “Flower Ball”. The “Flower Ball” showcased an entertaining program with a live concert by talented singer Mariya Yaremchuk and DJ Igor Zaiceff, dance shows, awarding a King and Queen of the Ball, an official buffet for guests and a charity auction. The main aim of the auction was to raise money for Mykola Shot, who is in need of a kidney transplant operation. Among the event’s organizers were representatives of the “Big Heart” Charity Foundation, Lyana Novak and Tamara Martyanova.

n May 24, 2013, “Club Split Lviv” hosted Martell Cognac appreciation evening! Who would miss out on a chance to experience that? The event started offering guests welcoming cocktail drinks which commenced an unforgettable gastronomic voyage though three provinces of France – Limousin, Provence and Alsace, combined with the exquisite House Martell Cognacs. As the event started, the Martell Brand Ambassador, Andrey Lopatin presented the manufacturing process of Martell’s fine cognac and spoke about the brand’s impressive three-century long history. Created in 1715, by what is today the world’s oldest cognac family, Martell French cognac has always stood out for its reputation, taste and exquisiteness. Martells strength - the unique style of their cognac renowned for being light and elegant. Martell’s philosophy is reflected in their style of pure, soft Cognac widely recognized for being mellow, light and fragrant. Martell uses only white grape varieties (about 99% of which are Ugni Blanc), which are quickly harvested every October. After pressing, natural yeasts dictate fermentation taking about a week, the resultant wine is around 7%. Distillation then takes place from November until March. Martell has a unique double distillation method for the wine using the Charentais pot still, this method does not involve distilling the lees in the wine culminating in their brilliant style of mellow and light Cognacs. This spring evening, Martell’s rich exquisite spirit was presented to the audience that included many of city’s art, business and social life elite and trendsetters. In the “Club Split Lviv” venue, which fused elegant sophistication and truly singular aesthetics, the event buzzed with artistic inspiration as savored the beauty of the event’s relaxing atmosphere and exquisite Martell VS based cocktails. Guests felt privileged to sample spectacular combinations of three Martell Cognacs– VSOP, The XO and The Cordon Bleu with dishes of French cuisine, especially created to pair World’s most recognized cognac, proving that Martell is not only digestive. Succulent bites of Fowl Terrine and the Martell VSOP cognac’s soft rounded texture and rich tastes beautifully complemented each other for an epicurean tasting experience. The XO and Cabbage Rolls with Rabbit and Mushrooms offered a powerful burst of flavour and truly festive gourmet experience. The Cordon Bleu with Stewed Fig with Nuts with a saffron and cinnamon sauce tasted absolutely sublime – light, fresh, enveloping and simply extraordinary. Tasting Martell cognac samples alongside with delicious culinary masterpieces created by “Club Split Lviv” cooks, spectacular vocal performance by Olesya Kirichuk, a lottery with prizes, and hearing interesting and useful tips from brilliant brand ambassador Andrey Lopatin, allowed guests of the evening to truly experience the creativity and inspiration of the Martell lifestyle. The quest to combine tradition and modernity, and to present new ways of appreciating the glorious pairing of Martell cognac and French cuisine, attested to the fact that contemporary tastes were at their best due to the welcoming hospitality of “Club Split Lviv”.

ечір дегустації французького коньяку Martell відбувся 24 травня 2013 року у клубі ”Спліт Львів”! І хто б відмовився там побувати? Дегустація розпочалась з коктейлів, з якими гості вирушили у незабутню гастрономічну подорож по трьох провінціях Франції – Лімузен, Прованс і Ельзас в поєднанні з вишуканими коньяками Дому Martell. Бренд Амбасадор Martell Андрій Лопатін розповів про трьохсотлітню історію бренду та специфіку процесу виготовлення коньяку Martell. Створений в 1715 році, Martell сьогодні є найстарішим із ведучих коньячних брендів у світі, який завжди вирізнявся своєю репутацією, смаком та вишуканістю. Сила Дому Martell – унікальный стиль – легкий та елегантний. Філософія Martell знаходить своє відображення в його стилі – чистому, м’якому, легкому і ароматному. Martell використовує тільки білі сорти винограду (майже 99% з яких – це Уні Блан), які швидко збирають у жовтні. Після витискання сік ферментує з натуральними дріжджами близько тижня і досягає міцності близько 7°. Дистиляція відбувається з листопада по березень. Martell має власний унікальний метод подвійної дистиляції в перегінних кубах Charentais; цей метод не передбачає дистиляції осаду, завдяки чому отримується специфічний м’який і легкий смак. Цього весняного вечора, вишуканий коньяк Martell представили на суд гурманів, серед яких було багато представників львівського світу мистецтва, бізнесу, моди та соціальної еліти. У затишному та елегантному клубі “Спліт Львів” поціновувачі з задоволенням смакували також коктейлі на основі Martell VS. А для дегустації трьох купажів коньяку Martell - VSOP, XO і Cordon Bleu були спеціально підібрані відповідні страви французької кухні. Цим наголосили на тому, що коньяк може бути не тільки дижестивом. Так, закуска террін з домашньої птиці гармонійно поєднувалась з м’яким смаком коньяку Martell VSOP, які прекрасно доповнювали один одного, створюючи абсолютно неперевершену комбінацію. Голубці по-лімузенські з м’ясом кролика і грибами чудово смакували під коньяк Martell ХО. До коньяку Martell Cordon Bleu подавали запечений інжир з горіхами під соусом з кориці та шафрану, що справив на всіх, хто його скуштував, незабутнє враження. Дегустація коньяку Martell у супроводі кулінарних шедеврів, створених досвідченими кухарями клубу ”Спліт Львів”, чудовий вокал Олесі Киричук, цікаві й корисні поради від представника бренду Андрія Лопатіна дозволили гостям вечора по-справжньому відчути творчу й натхненну атмосферу Martell. Гостинним організаторам клубу ”Спліт Львів” чудово вдалося об’єднати цього вечора традиції і сучасність та по-новому представити цю шляхетну пару – французьку кухню і коньяк Martell.

EBA EVENtS During May EBA in Lviv held following Committee meetings: legal Committee Meeting was held on Thursday, May 16, 2013, 17:00, at the EBA office in Lviv. The Invited Speaker - Ruslana Yukhimenko, partner of “Pavlenko & Partners”, head of the Practice of criminal Law – spoke about Appeal Against Actions of the Iinvestigator/ Prosecutor During the Preliminary Investigation by the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC). On the given examples, Mrs. Yukhimenko emphasized main changes in the criminal procedure code and answered all the questions committee participants raised while the discussion. Management Committee Meeting was held on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, 17:00. To speak on the topic «Corporate culture and its changes: if the changes are permanent in business now, than why it is so hard?» we invited Mr. Timothy T. Lupfer - 2003 -2011 Director, Partner at Deloitte Consulting LLP. the agenda of the event included a discussion of the following subtopics, such as a complexity theory, leadership definition and leadership model as well as a case study. Also Mr. Lupfer told about why most leadership models are wrong. Mr. Lupfer stated that each leader should possess three things, such as: purpose/direction, capabilities and character. “Humans are hierarchical by nature and organization does not exist without hierarchy” says Mr. Lupfer. Meeting ended up with the analyzing exercise of the three personalities of the US Civil War and their leadership roles. HR Committee Meeting was held on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, 17:00, at the EBA office in Lviv. The invited Speaker, Olena Skyba, HR Director of PJSC “Kredobank” presented following topic: HR Strategy Development and its Harmonization with the Business Strategy of the Company. Being experienced in the topic, Mrs. Skyba explained her understanding of the definition of strategy and named the criteria of an effective HR-strategy. Also, participants of the meeting had a chance to clarify the tasks and areas of HR responsibility and compare them with HR strategy at their companies. The meeting ended up with traditional Q&A session in friendly atmosphere.

n this issue of Lviv Today Markian Malskyy, Partner of Arzinger law firm, Head of West Ukrainian Branch Office, attorney-at-law, PhD, is answering the following question: “The German mother company would like to transfer certain assets (equipment, cars etc.) to its daughter company in Ukraine. What is the optimal way to do this?” Depending on the assets, which are supposed to be transferred to the Ukrainian daughter company, there can be chosen different ways of doing so. Most often such transactions are fulfilled through lease agreements, sale agreements or by means of contributing the assets to the charter capital of the Ukrainian company. in case the mother company intends to transfer the assets for certain period of time the lease agreement can be concluded. Under such agreement the German company will receive lease payments during the period, when the assets are used by the Ukrainian company. As mentioned earlier, the assets can be transferred to the Ukrainian daughter company also by means of concluding sale agreement. In this case the import duty would have to be paid. Alternatively, the German company may contribute such assets to the charter capital of the Ukrainian company. Similarly to the lease agreement, the German company may eventually return the assets back through the procedure of decreasing of the charter capital of Ukrainian company. It should be noted that increasing the charter capital with assets coming from abroad is exempt from import duty (unlike in case of import under sale agreement). However, in this case the Ukrainian company should not alienate these assets within next 3 years (afterwards it will not be limited in disposing of such assets). Otherwise, the company will be obliged to pay the full amount of the import duty, which it would have paid under sale agreement. However, should the mother company wish to return the assets back even within the 3-year period, the import duty will not be collected. it should be noted that both in case of transferring of the assets under sale agreement and by means of contributing to the charter capital the VAT will have to be paid.

WATER POLO Lviv’s water polo team “Dynamo” won the gold medal in the Ukrainian Water Polo Championship due to a successful victory over multi-champion team “Illichevets” (Mariupol) with a score of 9:7. The last time Lviv’s water polo team “Dynamo” was Ukraine’s Champion was in 1995. After the last game of the season against team “Slobozhanets” (Kharkiv) and a successful victory of 21:11, the “Dynamo” teammates overwhelmed with happy emotions tackled the coach Igor Zinkevych into the pool. This has now become their tradition of celebrating glorious achievements of the team such as winning Ukraine’s Cup for example. Among Lviv’s water polo team “Dynamo” there are two power players– Mykhaylo Yezerskyi (Belarus) and Martin Mravik (Slovakia), who did their best to bring victory to the team.

Basketball Lviv’s BC “Polytechnyka-Halychyna” finished their best season within the SuperLeague in 4th place. Their previous season wasn’t so successful for the team as they ended up 14th after a series of dramatic matches. This season we congratulate Serbian power forward Vladan Vukosavljevic, who the won title of season’s “Best power forward player” taking part into 50 matches of the club. Vladan Vukosavljevic prolonged his contract with Lviv’s club for the next season. Also, BC “Polytechnyka-Halychyna” prolonged contracts with another two players – Leonid Stefanishyn and Sergiy Alfiorov, who are expected to bring the team to victories in the upcoming season. Newcomer to the team will be forward, Yaroslav Lemyk, who previously played for BC “Hoverla” (Ivano-Frankivsk). More good news is that Zhelko Lukaich, head coach of “Polytechnyka-Halychyna” will train the “lions” team for the next two seasons according to the terms of the contract signed by the Serbian coach with the club owners.
Баскетбол Львівський баскетбольний клуб «Політехніка-Галичина» завершив свій найкращий сезон у Суперлізі, посівши четверте місце. Попередній сезон був не надто вдалим для команди, адже вони опинились лише на 14 місці. У цьому сезоні ми вітаємо сербського «бігмена» Владана Вукосавлєвича, який отримав титул «Найкращий центровий сезону», провівши 50 матчів у чемпіонаті, відзначаючись 16.5 очка, 10.5 підбирання й 1 передачею (19.5 РЕ) в середньому за гру. А в 31 матчі він оформив дабл-дабли (6 із них – у плей-офф). Владан продовжив свій контракт з «Політехнікою» на наступний сезон. Крім того, клуб продовжив контракти ще з двома гравцями – Леонідом Стефанишином і Сергієм Алфьоровим. Повернувся до команди і один із небагатьох представників баскетбольного Львова у Суперлізі - важкий форвард Ярослав Лемик (204 см), який ще донедавна успішно виступав за БК «Говерла» (Ів.Фр.). From May 31st – June 2nd 2013, Lviv hosted the Second International Rhythmic Gymnastics Cup Nika Cup 2013. The sports competition gathered over 200 girls (born in 1997-2006) representing 40 sports clubs from Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Germany. The event was aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and rhythmic gymnastics. The first day of competitions started with a festive parade, while other days were dedicated to competitions in multiple disciplines featuring athletic skills by performing routines using hoops, rope, ball, ribbon, clubs, as well as free routine. Success in rhythmic gymnastics requires such skills as balance, flexibility, coordination, and strength, while competing in the discipline demands an ability to retain these skills under pressure.
Другий міжнародний турнір з художньої гімнастики Nika Cup відбувся у Львові 31 травня – 2 червня 2013 р. Спортивні змагання зібрали понад 200 дівчаток (1997-2006 р. н.), що представляли 40 спортивних клубів з України, Росії, Польщі, Угорщини, Словаччини, Азербайджану, Узбекистану й Німеччини. Захід був спрямований на пропаганду здорового способу життя та художньої гімнастики. Перший день змагань розпочався зі святкового параду, а всі інші дні були присвячені змаганням за обов’язковою програмою, до якої входили вправи з обручем, скакалкою, м’ячем, стрічкою, булавами, а також за довільною програмою. Художня гімнастика вимагає таких навичок, як рівновага, гнучкість, координація рухів і сила, а участь у змаганнях потребує здатності виявити усі ці навички на змаганнях у суперництві з іншими спортсменками.
UKRAINE’S OPEN CUP BODYBUILDING COMPETITIONS
ВІДКРИТИЙ КУБОК УКРАЇНИ З БОДІБІЛДИНГУ
On May 19th 2013, Lviv hosted Ukraine’s Open Cup bodybuilding competitions. The competition finals gathered more than 50 athletes, and determined that the winners will join the National Team for the upcoming European Championship in Budapest (Hungary). Men competed in the Veteran category, five junior categories, Classic bodybuilding and the Absolute category, while the women competed in the Body-fitness and Model-fitness categories. Among the winners in the Veteran category were 44 year old Ruslan Sidletskyi, in the junior category – 20 year old Mykola Pustovit (Kyiv) and Mykola Sherbatyuk (Moldova), in Classic bodybuilding category – Andriy Shveda (Lviv region). In the women’s categories the winner of the Body–fitness award was Marina Antokhy (Chernivtsi) and Ukraine’s Cup in Model-fitness went to Lilya Savlyk (Khmelnitskyi region). The winner of the most prestigious Absolute category was Ukraine’s multi-champion and experienced athlete, Vitaliy Podolskyi (Kamjanets-Podolskyi). Second place winner was Mykola Karpuk (Mykolaiv) and third place went to Yuriy Pidchasha (Zolochiv).
Традиційні змагання на Кубок України з бодібілдингу були проведені у Львові 19 травня 2013 р. Фінал змагань зібрав понад 50 спортсменів, а переможці зможуть стати учасниками Національної збірної на майбутньому чемпіонаті Європи в Будапешті (Угорщина). Чоловіки змагались у категоріях: ветерани, п’ять молодших категорій, класичний бодібілдинг і абсолютній категорії, а жінки змагались у категоріях бодіфітнес і фітнес-модель. Серед переможців у категорії ветеранів переміг 44-річний Руслан Сидлецький (Хьельницький), в категорії юніори – 20-річний Микола Пустовіт (Київ) та Микола Щербатюк (Молдова), у категорії класичний бодібілдинг – Андрій Шведа (Львівська обл.) У жіночій категорії боді-фітнес перемогла Марина Антохі (Чернівці) а Кубок України у категорії фітнес-модель отримала Ліля Савлик (Хмельницька обл.). Переможцем у найпрестижнішій абсолютній категорії став багаторазовий чемпіон України, досвідчений спортсмен Віталій Подольський (Кам’янецьПодільський). Друге місце зайняв Микола Карпук (Миколаїв) і третє місце – Юрій Підчаша (Золочів).

THE SALTY CORNERS

n Soviet times a spell in the salt mines was the fate of dissidents and criminals. But today the glittering tunnels below Solotvyno in Western Ukraine have been transformed into a more benign destination: a utopia for people with asthma and other respiratory diseases. Doctors at Solotvyno’s allergological hospital direct patients to dank chambers 300 meters below ground, where a unique microclimate is said to ease their coughing and wheezing. The hospital, set among rolling hills near the Romanian border, started as a small clinic almost 30 years ago but is now a luxury complex serving about 6,000 people a year. Increasingly it is attracting customers from Western European countries where urbanization and dietary changes have contributed to rising rates of asthma. Western experts remain sceptical, but staff in Solotvyno say a course of residential treatment is 90% effective in reducing symptoms for up to three years. Their method is known
as speleotherapy: it employs the salt-permeated air of the working mine to dissolve phlegm in the bronchial tubes and kill micro-organisms that cause infections. Speleotherapy was discovered in Poland in the 1950s, when it was noticed that salt miners rarely suffered from tuberculosis or respiratory diseases. It is a common treatment in eastern and central Europe, but almost unknown elsewhere. The underground facility situated in shaft No. 9 of Solotvyno’s salt mine is unique because its tunnels are the deepest in the world to be LVIV TODAY | June 2013
used for such purposes. Patients – a third of them children – spend an average of 24 days at the facility, during which they descend in a lift for 18 to 20 afternoon or overnight sessions. The temperature in the mine maintains a steady 22°C all year round. Up to 200 people can be underground at one time; talking, reading or sleeping on beds grouped together in alcoves carved out of the rock and lit by fluorescent tubes. Since its discovery, the curative power of the Solotvyno lakes has attracted anyone who wishes to become healthy through the power
of nature. These lakes are filled with curative waters with a salt content of somewhere between 146–200 gram per litre and increased concentration of bromide ions. The highly-mineralized solution of these medicinal salt lakes is alcalescent, and sodium-chloride. The solution and the curative dirt at the bottom of the lakes and along the banks contain the rare elements: caesium, fluorine, bromide, and rubidium. During the year the water temperature does not decrease lower than 17°C. It was noticed long ago that bathing in salt water decreases pain in joints in cases of rheumatism, diseases of the backbone and helps to reduce stress. Psoriasis is well-cured and any wounds are easily healed. During summer thousands of Romanians, Hungarians, Ukrainians, Czechs and many other nationalities come here to improve their health and to get all the fun one can expect from the resort that should ultimately be titled the “Egypt of the Carpathians”. To get cured, people bathe in the Solotvyno lakes; apply the mineral-rich mud, clay and brine. Water treatments and medical dirt applications truly help patients who have psoriasis, atop dermatitis and chronic dermatitis, and also those who have had nervous breakdowns, immune system problems and experienced recent stress. As any great resort, Solotvyno offers great places to stay, parking, shower-rooms, restaurants, and lots of summer cafes where live music and dancing goes on all night!
