THE 2020 CRYSTAL BALL:

LVIV TO BECOME A WORLD GIANT IN 2020 AS WE LOOK BACK ON THE YEAR THAT WAS 2019, LET’S ALSO TAKE A LOOK FORWARD TO 2020 TO SEE JUST WHY LVIV WILL MAKE ITSELF KNOWN IN THE WORLD OVER THE NEXT YEAR AND CONTINUE TO SHOW WHY THE CITY REMAINS THE ‘SOUL OF UKRAINE’.

UKRAINIAN POLITICS CONTINUE TO DOMINATE WORLD HEADLINES

L

ast year was one to remember in the Ukrainian political scene. Not only did the country elect itself a comedian as President and his very young, very green party to parliament, but one of the first calls the new President made to US counterpart Donald Trump played a massive role in American politics, eventually leading to the latter’s impeachment. It all had to do with former US vice-president Joe Biden’s son’s role in Ukraine and whether or not President Zelenskyy would do Trump a “favour”. With the US moving into an election year, expect that Ukraine remains a buzz word on the international scene. Lviv, too, continues to see its fair share of political intrigue. Lviv region governor Markiyan Malskyy was dismissed last week just six months into the gig, while Lviv mayor Andriy Sadovyy continues to fight abuse-of-office charges. LVIV CEMENTS ITSELF AS ‘SILICON VALLEY: EAST’ Lviv’s place as one of the IT leaders in Eastern Europe has been known for years, but expect the city to really cement its reputation in 2020. Long before the city doubled-down on in its reputation by attracting some of the world’s top IT companies, including Samsung, Microsoft, and Oracle, the city boasted top IT innovators like PayPal co-founder Max Levchin and What’s App founder Jan Doum. With the $160-million-dollar Lviv IT City (part of the innovative Lviv IT Cluster) well on its way and world-class events like Lviv IT Arena already establishing a stellar reputation, it’s really no surprise that the city has earned its long sought-after

nickname. Expect more of the same in 2020, as more world-class companies begin to call the Western Ukrainian capital home. LEOPOLITANS EMERGE AS WORLD-BEATERS AT THE 2020 OLYMPICS Lviv made a splash in the sports world in 2019 by announcing its intention to bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics. At the same time, our summer athletes continue to show why they are poised to shine in Tokyo, Japan this summer. While there are always surprises – favourites falling at unexpected times, unsung heroes coming up with the performance of a lifetime – a few Leopolitans must like their chances heading into 2020. Keep your eyes on sharpshooter Pavlo Korostylov, the karate team led by Leopolitans Stanislav Horuna and Kateryna Kryva, the women’s wrestling team led by Yuliya Tkach, rhythmic gymnast Khrystyna Pohranychna, and star cyclist Olena Starikova. Also, keep reading Lviv Today as Ukraine’s only Olympicaccredited, English-language magazine. Maybe the star performances will help Lviv in its dream to build a multipurpose, Olympic-class arena in the city! LVIV FLEXES ITS WORLD-CLASS TOURISM MUSCLE Lviv continues to reap the benefits from the last time it held a world-class sporting event as the city’s renovated airport continues to set passenger records. With new airlines and new routes announced monthly, Lviv’s D. Halytskyy International Airport smashed passenger records in 2019 as more than 2.5 million people visited the Western Ukrainian capital by air. Compare this

to 2011, the year before the renovation was completed, when less than 300,000 passengers flew into the city. With record demand – both for international and domestic routes – word on the street is that the city will re-open the old airport next door to accommodate the traffic. It’s no surprise either, as …

LVIV CONTINUES TO DEFINE WHAT ‘SOUL OF UKRAINE’ REALLY MEANS It’s no surprise that Lviv is known as the ‘Soul of Ukraine’; it’s not only a historical badge the city wears proudly, but it’s also a responsibility that Leopolitans take seriously. It’s one of the reasons why the city hosts some of Ukraine’s most cutting-edge and avant-garde events. From the incredible International Ukrainian Dance & Culture Festival and chic Ballet Fest choreography festival, to the popular Ukrainian Song Project and glamorous Lviv Fashion Weeks, to a Ukrainian holiday experience that is simply second-to-none, Lviv continues to be home to the most truly Ukrainian experiences. Be sure to check out our Top 20 in 2020 list this month for the can’t-miss events on this year’s calendar – and be sure to keep reading Lviv Today so you don’t miss out on why this world-class city continues to define what the ‘Soul of Ukraine’ really means.         Lee Reaney, Editor of Lviv Today magazine

DRUHA RIKA UNPLUGGED 10 February at 19:00 at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Druha Rika – one of Ukraine’s most popular rock bands – is set to perform a special acoustic concert at Lviv’s beautiful Opera & Ballet Theatre on 10 February. Since forming in 1996, the band has released five studio and two compilation albums. Just like the British group they are often compared to – Depeche Mode – the band has changed its sound and style with the times. Gone is the stylish and energetic melodrama of frontman Valery Harchyshyn from the earlier albums (don’t worry – he’s still with the group!). It’s been replaced with a clear, accurate, even poignant sound on their last album, ‘Supernation’. Ukraine is changing and her voices are changing with her. In Lviv, the band will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra and will perform hits from their latest disc, ‘Pyramid’, as well as their greatest hits. One of Ukraine’s most popular, experienced and unique musical experiences, Druha Rika is a perfect combination of quality music and unforgettable fun that you don’t want to miss! Tickets are going for 290–1450 UAH. For more information, or to book your tickets today, please visit concert.ua.

LEGENDARY BG & AQUARIUM PRESENTS ‘GRASS DOORS’ 11 February at 19:00 at the Malevich Concert Arena (2 Chornovola Ave.)

LVIV TODAY  |  January 2020

Lviv’s Malevich Concert Arena hotspot will be hopping on 11 February when one of Russia’s true rock pioneers, Boris Grebenshikov (aka BG), brings his Aquarium band to the Western Ukrainian capital. Born in St. Petersburg in 1943, Grebenshikov is known as the founding father of Russian rock. Starting in the ‘70s with a Grateful Dead-like cult underground following, his prolific career has seen him dubbed alternatively as Russia’s Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, and David Bowie. Aquarium was immensely popular throughout the Soviet Union, but were limited to playing at underground clubs and private gatherings as the group was prevented from recording in professional studios. Building a significant following in the communist Cold War era, BG and Aquarium’s spirited blend of folk, rock, and jazz has lost none of its impact, while Grebenshikov’s poignantly honest lyrics still swing with the full force of the times they

were written. BG has recorded 31 albums, another 12 “unofficial ones”, and nearly as many live records. Almost a half century of touring has turned Aquarium into a single organism, immersing audiences in the magical atmosphere of the ‘golden age’ of pop music. New listeners will be amazed at the stylistic diversity and harmonious combination of seemingly impossible elements. Despite playing over 10,000 concerts, the band never performs the same set list twice. Concertgoers may hear an unknown song from the late ‘70s alongside a generational anthem or a tune just written yesterday. Any Aquarium concert is a fascinating journey to the “reverse side of reality” and Leopolitan music lovers and guests of the city will be delighted with the group’s ‘Grass Doors’ programme featuring legendary and completely new tracks. Tickets start at 490 UAH. For more information and ticket booking, please visit concert.ua.

Для отримання додаткової інформації відвідайте facebook.com/events/444EnduroSchool. LVIV TODAY  |  January 2020

UKRAINE TRADITIONS

S   PHERE IN LVIV

FOR CH RISTMAS HOLIDAY SEASON

The concept of spherical housing dates back to ancient times and takes its lead from Mother Nature, where spheres are associated with eggs, bosoms and other eternal symbols of new life. Civilizations have developed spherical architecture all over the world, with rounded features often dominating skylines and prominent buildings such as palaces, churches and mosques. A spherical abode recently appeared in Lviv for the 2019–2020 festive season. Anatoli Artemenko spoke to project co-author Oles Dmytryshyn about this original installation. W H AT IN SP IRED YOU TO CRE ATE TH I S SP H ERICAL M ASTE RPIE CE ? Co-creator Vasyl and I have been friends for a long time. He is an architect while I am a lawyer, but construction is our vocation. We have a common interest in creating beautiful things, by which I mean engineering, new technologies and creativity. Vasyl

saw a construction similar to this sphere and shared it with me. I was interested. We started production in early April 2019, and by May the sphere made its debut in front of Lviv Opera House. The sphere is organically suitable for any landscape, regardless of climate or terrain. In addition, the spherical dome construction is very robust and sturdy. The sphere offers the maximum amount of space while requiring a minimum building area. W H AT DO YO U CA LL YO UR PR O JECT ? We have named this project SFERA. This is the second time we have presented our SFERA concept in Lviv, together with our partners at "Lvivski Yarmarky" company. We installed the SFERA near Lviv Opera House during the annual Easter Fair, and now on Rynok Square for the festive season. Each time, the installation was supported by Lviv City Administration. During the Chirstmas holidays, the SFERA served as an impromptu St. Nicholas House and also hosted art exhibits.

W H AT K IND O F R EACT IO N H AV E YO U H A D TO T HE SFE R A INSTA LL AT IO N IN LV IV ? It is difficult to calculate how many people visited the SPHERE in total, but we have had a very positive reaction from everyone including Lviv residents, foreign tourists, and visitors from other parts of Ukraine. There has been a lot of interest. W H AT A R E YO UR PL A NS FO R T HE FUT UR E? We plan to organize commercial production of the SFERA. There are ambitious ideas to create business franchises for express cafes and eco-hotels based on our SFERA model. We will use the most innovative materials in production, but the sphere concept guarantees that it will remain a natural environment. The spherical dome construction itself is very strong and practical, of course.

HARVEST:

e’re always trying to impress our loved ones on Valentine’s Day. Heartshaped chocolates, valentines, stuffed animals – that’s all very nice, but too… obvious. If you want a practical gift, go with a stylish HARVEST backpack or bag.

HARVEST is the Ukrainian brand that focuses on functionality and minimal design. A place where you can find black waist bags next to leopard-printed ones. For those who like the city lifestyle, there are classic backpacks with roll-top construction – convenient for business or tourism. For girls, there are trendy mini-backpacks; for boys – a wide range of messenger bags. The colour-grade is amazing: from pastel beige and khaki to bright tropical prints and fashionable fruit colours. But the real kicker with Harvest bags is their reliability. Tough straps with a comfortable back and convenient padding for your laptop makes HARVEST bags as tough as they come. That’s why these accessories make such great Valentine’s Day gifts! We promise you – you won’t be sorry!

VIP GUEST OF THE YEAR: VIP ГІСТЬ РОКУ: TOM CRUISE Tom Cruise, the legendary American actor, director, and film producer, visited Lviv on 2 October to scout the city as the location for a yet-to-be-named film project. Due to its beauty and its vintage aesthetic, as well as the variety of locations, availability of skilled labour, low costs, and government incentives, Lviv has become a popular place to shoot films and commercials. Films like ‘House of Flying Daggers’ (2014) and commercials for brands like Apple, Google, Lacoste and, recently, BMW, have all been filmed in the “Paris of Ukraine”, as costs are reportedly up to five times lower than in the EU and USA. Cruise met with Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi and visited several Lviv landmarks while in the city. LVIV TODAY  |  January 2020

CULTURAL PROJECT OF THE YEAR: WAGNER’S ‘LOHENGRIN’ PREMIERES IN LVIV A three-act romantic opera written and composed by the great Richard Wagner, ‘Lohengrin’ premiered at Lviv’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre in early March. While the opera remains a classic, the tale has always contained a hint of subversion. ‘Lohengrin’ is one of the most important works of the romantic age and has been reinterpreted in many ways in theatres around the globe. Performed in Lviv in its original German with Ukrainian subtitles, it’s also been updated to a modern setting. Opera & Ballet Theatre staff, including art director Vasyl Vovkun, conductor Myron Yusypovych, and Austrian costume designer Matthias Engelmann have worked hard to deliver maybe their hippest and most experimental opera yet. By updating the story and the spectacle, but still keeping its lively, slightly-crazed aesthetic, the creative team has put together an opera that speaks to a broader and younger audience.

LVIV TODAY  |  January 2020

MOST DYNAMIC HOTSPOT: LEM STATION Late last year an investment agreement was signed with Lem Station to transform the old tram depot at Sakharova and Vitovshoho into an innovative creative centre that will become an intersection for the development of artists, entrepreneurs, scientists, and other representatives of creative industries. What a difference a year makes! Lem Station is now a vibrant social hub of opportunities for Lviv’s creative industries, offering an inspiring place to imple-

ment ideas, meet new people, and get work done. By the time the infrastructure is fully developed, the site will feature areas for events, co-working, and workshops, while also offering food courts, open terraces, and a children’s development centre. At the same time, the original form of the historical architecture is being preserved, so the early 20th Century buildings of the tram depot will be fully restored (in 2 to 5 years). Its inaugural year showed

the site’s huge creative potential, attracting events like the LvivMozArt Music Festival, Art Sale Lviv, the ‘Kit Gavatovycha’ Theatre Festival, the Lviv Art & Wine Festival, and the TLUM & KRAM Flea Market. This bodes well for the site becoming a powerful platform for communication and cooperation; a place where Leopolitans can tap into their immense creativity and free spirits and promote their products on the global market!

співпраці. Інфраструктура буде розвиватись з часом, а поки що тут будуть розміщені зони для проведення урочистих заходів, конференцій та семінарів, а також фуд-корти, відкриті тераси та дитячий центр розвитку. Зовнішній вигляд старого трамвайного депо зберігається, а його будівлі початку 20 століття будуть повністю відновлені через 2–5 років. Події першого року існування "Lem Station" продемонстрували величезний творчий потенціал;

RECORD OF THE YEAR: LVIV AIRPORT TOPS 2,000,000 PASSENGERS IN RECORD TIME On 22 November, the Lviv International Airport welcomed young Solomon Klassen on a Wizz Air flight from Dortmund. The four-month-old was the two millionth passenger of 2019 – the first time Lviv’s airport has reached that number before December. Before 2017, the last time the airport had over one million passengers was 1991. Air traffic in the city had fallen to an abysmal 297,000 passengers before the airport got a much-needed upgrade ahead of EURO 2012. After becoming just Ukraine’s fourth airport with 1,000,000+ passengers in 2017, the city saw a 47.9% increase last year when over 1.5 million passengers visited. Another 39.3% increase in air traffic this year means the Lviv Airport will set a record for number of visitors in a single year. Even more exciting is the uptick in domestic flights, which jumped 24.3% to nearly 12,500. The airport’s most popular routes are to Warsaw, Kyiv, and Istanbul.

LVIV’S DYNAMO WATER POLO TEAM

Lviv’s Dynamo water polo club celebrated its 70th anniversary in style this summer when they met near City Hall dressed only in their usual garb – swimming trunks and caps. Leopolitan sports fans and guests of the city flocked to take selfies with the athletes and talk about the current season. To mark the anniversary, a special event at the Taras Shevchenko monument square saw the world’s largest water polo ball – a recordbreaking 3.5 metres with a weight of over 250 kg – presented. After the ceremony, the team took to the fabled Lviv trams, surprising passengers and handing out special invitations to the Ukrainian Cup final that took place in the city on 22–23 June. It was there that our beloved Dynamo knocked off rivals Kharkiv to capture the team’s eighth title – and fifth in the last six years! The team’s other titles came in 1997, 2001, 2012, and 2014–17. Way to go boys!

LVIV’S ANIMAL RIGHTS & ANTI-FUR CAMPAIGNS Hundreds of Leopolitans joined an animal rights march and anti-fur protest in the Western Ukrainian capital in 2019, demanding an end to the use of animals in circuses and dolphin shows, medical experiments, perfumes, and fur farms. They also called for the end to the cull of homeless animals and for the rehabilitation of animals that have experienced cruelty. Protesters supported a UAnimals initiative to adopt a law to close all Ukrainian fur farms and skinneries. While much of the world has moved on from fur coats, they remain popu-

lar in many parts of Eastern Europe, including Ukraine. Many animals suffer and die for these fashion trends even though there are plenty of other products that can be worn instead to prevent the unnecessary slaughter of innocent animals. Animal activists in Ukraine have been struggling for this cause for years and have already persuaded 17 of the country’s top fashion designers, including Andre Tan, Elena Reva, Lake, and Bevza, to join the international Fur Free Retailer project to stop using furs to create new clothing lines.

MODEL OF THE YEAR: KATERINA (KATE) VELCHEVA In the age of social media, landing a coveted runway exclusive is no longer the only way for a new face to distinguish herself during a fashion month. While a prime spot at Prada or Givenchy will always turn heads, modeling can’t simply be reduced to a numbers game. In other words: it isn’t enough to just walk the walk – you have to stand out from the pack. Katerina started her fashion modeling career three years ago at Lviv leading OK”S Models agency. Her dark skin and oriental features weren’t as popular at the time, but trends have changed and Katerina’s natural beauty and poise have now become a real catch for many brands. For the present day numerous top agencies from USA and UK line up to work with her. Elegant, yet offbeat, Katerina also meets great demand in Europe, Asia and the Near East. She also worked on prestigious international campaigns for Vogue, Otto, and Reserved. Despite her busy schedule, the 19-year-old Leopolitan is always happy to grace the runway for top Ukrainian brands too. PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR: UKRAINE CRUSHES SERBIA IN VINTAGE LVIV PERFORMANCE Perhaps the Ukrainian national football team should play all of its games in Lviv. Ukraine remain unbeaten in the Western Ukrainian capital, having recorded nine wins and two draws since the city first hosted the team in 2011. The thrilling EURO 2020 qualification victory on 7 June has only enhanced the

legend of Lviv. Ukraine’s 5-0 demolition over a tough Serb team was memorable in many ways – it featured five international-class goals, outstanding individual performances across the pitch, and levels of tactical dominance that made it arguably the most important performance of coach Andriy Shevchen-

ko’s career. Dynamo Kyiv midfielder Viktor Tsyhankov got the party started with a brace of goals inside two exhilarating first half minutes, while winger Yevhen Konoplyanka matched the feat in the second half on the way to handing Serbia its largest defeat as an independent nation.

n late autumn 2019, Ukraine's Infrastructure Ministry unveiled plans to transform Lviv International Airport into a regional transport hub. This envisioned expansion will see the addition of bus terminal facilities and a direct rail connection to the city's imposing Habsburg era Central Railway Station, representing the latest stage in Lviv airport’s evolution from end-on-the-line outpost to bustling Central European international gateway. Ukrainian railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia is already working on preparations for the construction of a rail connection between Lviv International Airport and the city’s main railway station, with Kyiv's Boryspil Express set to serve as a model for the

42

initiative. The Boryspil Express has proved hugely popular since its launch in November 2018, carrying around one million passengers during its first year of service. There is every reason to believe a future Lviv Airport Express will enjoy similar success, given the striking growing in passenger volumes the airport has experienced in recent years. Lviv airport set yet another record on 22 November 2019, reaching the two million passengers landmark for the first time. The airport ended the year with over 2.2 million passengers in total, making Lviv comfortably the busiest regional airport in Ukraine and placing it in third position nationally behind Kyiv’s Sikorsky and Boryspil airports. This

represents an approximately 40% year-on-year increase on the figure for 2018, which was itself 48% up on the previous year. Overall, the number of travelers flying via Lviv has expanded tenfold over the past fifteen years since 2004. These figures are exceptional, even in the context of the unprecedented current boom throughout Ukraine’s air travel industry. Ukraine’s airports recorded passenger growth of 18.8% during the first ten months of 2019, with 20.475 million people in total flying to and from the country. This growth has been more or less consistent for the past four years, as new airlines enter the Ukrainian market attracted by the country’s expanding LVIV TODAY  |  January 2020

LVIV OPINION

economy as well as the game-changing June 2017 advent of visa-free travel to the European Union for Ukrainian passport holders. Thanks to a range of local factors, Lviv International Airport is currently growing at approximately twice the national rate. Lviv has emerged over the past decade as one of Central Europe’s most dynamic tourism destinations, while the city also serves as a hub for the wave of economic migrants who have moved to Poland and other EU destinations since 2014 in search of higher salaries. These twin trends are evident in the list of the airport’s most popular international destinations, with the growing Ukrainian community in Poland helping to make Warsaw the top route, while Turkish tourists have helped place Istanbul in second position. All this is a long way away from Lviv International Airport’s former life as a lazy provincial outpost for much of the Soviet and early post-Soviet periods. The airport originally dates back to the interwar years of the early twentieth century when Lviv was part of Poland. Built in the 1920s, the first Lviv airport officially opened in 1929 with flights LVIV TODAY  |  January 2020

to Warsaw and Krakow. The inaugural international service connected the city with Romanian capital Bucharest, followed by the launch of flights to other regional destinations such as Sofia and Athens before the outbreak of WWII. Following WWII, the Soviet authorities constructed new terminal facilities in the 1950s. This infrastructure remained in use until 2010, when the airport underwent a major upgrade as part of Lviv’s preparations to serve as one of four Ukrainian host cities during the UEFA Euro 2012 European football championship. The USD 200 million redevelopment of Lviv International Airport ahead of Euro 2012 included a major runway extension and the construction of an entirely new terminal complex that quadrupled the airport’s capacity from around 500 passengers per hour to 2000. The new-look Lviv International Airport also underwent a rebranding and took on the name of King Danylo, the medieval ruler credited with founding Lviv in the mid-thirteenth century. With new state-of-the-art facilities in place, the quaint Soviet-era terminal building was retired from service and remained mothballed for

a number of years. However, with new airlines touching down in Lviv on an almost monthly basis and rapid year-on-year growth in passenger numbers, the 1955 vintage facilities reentered service in summer 2019 to take some of the pressure off the new terminal by handling domestic flights and charter flights.

Monthly news and views from the European Business Association’s Western Ukraine office

EBA SPECIAL UNITED BY VALUES. 15-TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBR ATION OF EBA WESTERN UKR AINE OFFICE Together with the office’s executive team, partners and members of the Regional Coordination Council 2019, the idea of EBA Western Ukrainian Office 15th Anniversary celebration – “United by Values” – was successfully implemented. Many people from different spheres and generations worked hard to make these 15 years successful. To mark this historic milestone, we decided to celebrate the anniversary with a series of meetings to recall how everything started, what unites us and what the business community should expect soon.

“The main idea of the 15th-anniversary celebration was not accidentally chosen, because, at a time when everything is changing fast and business has to overcome new challenges every day, these are the values that we rely on while making important decisions. Values mean a lot to the EBA. They bring companies together for over 20 years in Ukraine and 15 years in Western Ukrainian Office. Further uniting of business based on the values of the Association – transparency, rule of law, partnerships, culture and respect, security and care, passion for innovation – in my opinion, will make it possible to achieve our goal – make Ukraine a better place for doing business,” – said Maryana Lutsyshyn, Head of the Association's Western Ukrainian Office.

EBA SPECIAL On November 29, the event “United by Values. Past. Friends Party” took place. Leaders who have worked for the Association for 15 years and started the path of the organization have been invited to the event. The friendly atmosphere, meeting of peers who were brought together by good memories, pleasant gathering of colleagues, guests from abroad who helped to build the organization, once again reminded of the EBA mission – to make Ukraine the best place for doing business and our strength – cooperation, interaction, and partnership. On December 6, we organized the business conference “United by values. Future” and the grand reception “United by Values. Present”. At the conference together with the guests – Jana Herceg, Head of the Trade and Economic Sector of EU Delegation to Ukraine, Svitlana Mykhailovska, EBA Deputy Director, Advocacy, and Yaroslav Lyubinets, Chairman of SoftServe Board of Directors we talked about the future of the EU, the Association and business community. The event was moderated by Anton Podilchak, Head of the Regional Coordination Council of the EBA Western Ukrainian Office. We also discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on the daily lives of each of us and our business, as well as fundamental changes in the country, such as the fight against corruption and the role of each of us in the development of the state. In addition to the Association's participants, Markiyan Malskyy, Head of Lviv Regional State Administration, Denys Shmygal, Head of Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration, Andriy Sadoviy, Mayor of Lviv, and Vasyl Kresyak, Acting Head of the Main Department of State Tax Service in Lviv region, also attended the grand reception. We hope that constructive dialogue and our cooperation with them will only intensify next year. At the end of the evening, traditionally, the results of the elections to the Regional Coordination Council for 2020 were announced: • • • • •

Igor Savka, Director of ACO Industries, Anton Podilchak, Managing Partner of Advice Group, Taras Yurynts, Director of Guldmann Ukraine, Roman Velychko, HIMA Business Development Director in Ukraine, Alina Boychuk, Director of South Western Department of PZU Ukraine.

Therefore, we congratulate the Coordinating Council's representatives on their election and wish them energy and motivation for the activity in the Council Of course, on behalf of the members, we would like to say a special thanks to the partners of the event. This year AGMM organization was supported by EBA members – Citadel Inn Hotel, SoftServe, Klingspor, Karpatsmoly, Freedom Finance, Advice Group, Arzinger, Pernod Ricard Ukraine and friends of the Association – SHOco., the Old Lion Publishing House, ILTA Lviv, MOPIS.

EBA EVENTS HOW LE AN HELPS TO INCRE ASE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF BUSINESS AND TE AMWORK. PROGRESS SERVICE CASE 2. How did LEAN come to Ukraine? As far as we know, Kaizen Club in Ukraine was founded by Japan International Cooperating Agency – JICA in 2010. Then appeared more organizations that promoted LEAN philosophy.

3. W hen did you decide to implement LEAN in your company? We decided to implement LEAN in 2016. From that time, we have been improving our working places, working territory, production processes. Thus, we had increased productivity in 4 times.

4. How LEAN helped you to increase your business efficiency? We increased our efficiency because of the reduction of production processes, using stretching methods and kaizen instruments.

5. How you succeed in combating resistance to changes in your employees and partners? The main things that helped us in combating resistance from employees’ side while implementing LEAN were an everyday learning process, tide cooperation, and direct participation of team members in every improvement, our system of ideas rewarding, accepting and implementing, and of course, building supporting atmosphere.

6. Could a service company use LEAN principles, or it is only for production companies? Service companies could use LEAN because they also could find wastes in their processes of providing services. By eliminating wastes mentioned previously in question #1, we can make any service or production process more effective.

7. What could you recommend to other companies considering your experience of implementing LEAN? What steps they could make?

LEAN nowadays is a very popular instrument for service and production companies worldwide. So in the framework of EBA Ad- Hoc meeting member – companies had an opportunity to see how LEAN helps to increase the effectiveness of business and teamwork based on the Progress Service case. This is a Ukrainian small family-owned business. It produces shoes and has production facilities in Lviv.

46

Fediuk Pavlo and Fediuk Hrystyna, Progress Service owners, made a tour of the company for us and then we had a Q&A session with them and their colleague – Mariіa Halai.

1. What LEAN means? LEAN as for us is using measures aimed at eliminating wastes (wasted potential, overproduction, transportation, inventory, defects, overprocessing, waiting, motion) in all processes at factory and office.

Lean is a long-term journey in the world of everyday improvements. Each company can start with seeing 8 types of wastes in the company’s processes, make improvements, shoot videos with this implemented ideas and changes and share these small wins with team members. LEAN should be easy and fun. Remember the 0, 001% rule. If you make a small improvement (0, 001%) regularly, you could have doubled productivity growth after 3 years. We thank Progress service for the invitation and sharing their stories of continuous improvements!

EBA EVENTS CRITICAL THINKING IN THE POST-TRUTH PERIOD The topic of critical thinking in the post-truth era is more relevant than ever before! Here are some keynotes from the regular Western EBA PR Hub meeting: • The need for information has not diminished: if you are not watching TV, then you are watching YouTube, social networks video, where there are even more opportunities for manipulation. • Thus people spend a lot of time on social networks now, even more than with their families, it becomes very easy to manipulate. • Lack of attention increases the inability to recognize the truth, and in fear, people are even less attentive and easier manipulated. • Manipulation became a normal and widely spread thing. • People are lazy, so if you want them to do what you need, it’s easy to make them do what you want with the help of prepared information. • Feelings and points of view have superseded the facts. • The expert on Facebook, if more emotional, will convince better than the real expert. • The truth is what benefits you. Algorithms will compete for truth. We thank Victor Halchynskyy for examples of manipulation and moderation, and Perfect PR for inviting guests, for the interesting presentation and cases! We were also pleased to welcome at the meeting Roman Holubovskyy, the creator of UaReview!

Dear Arzinger Team, I would like to verify several options of establishing of a business unit of foreign company in Ukraine. As the matter of fact we review the possibility of establish either the representative office or limited liability company. Which option would you recommend and why? Thank you, Roger Dear Roger, indeed the possibility to establish the unit in Ukraine includes both of the described options. Limited Liability Company ("LLC") is the most common option, clear in its structuring and management system. The following peculiarities are determined by the establishment of LLC:

Olena Ohonovska, Associate at Arzinger Law Firm, attorney-at-law

• charter capital is to be established in amount that shareholders deem sufficient (no requirements for minimum charter capital amount); • LLC can conduct any business activity (in some cases specific types of activities are to be conducted upon the license obtaining); • no fee for the state registration of an LLC is established; • registration procedure upon the finalization of all necessary documents shall be not more than one business day; • minimum amount of the shareholders is not established, but in any case – ultimate beneficiary owners are to be disclosed. This list is not exhaustive, but abovementioned usually is the most important to take into consideration. When establishing the representative office ("RO") please note that there is a range of peculiarities which includes inter alia the following ones: • no charter capital is prescribed for RO. Financing shall be conducted directly by the parent company according to the established business plan; • possibility to conduct economic activity only upon the registration of the RO with the "conducting economic activity status". Moreover, such economic activity of the RO shall coincide with the types of economic activities of the parent company; • fee for the registration of the RO – was decreased comparing to previous periods and it was announced that further it will constitute amount of one minimum living wage for the individuals able to work (as of the date of this article – approx. EUR 80); • regular registration took 60 business days but with recent changes it was announced that further it will take up to 20 business days and shall be conducted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Ukraine. Nonetheless, preparation of the documents is more troublesome, than for the purposes of LLC establishment; • no shareholders in RO (thus, no necessity to describe ultimate beneficiary owners). Additionally, there is a wide range of labor, tax and customs related peculiarities of the functioning of the RO which in most of cases are of more complicated nature than in case of LLC. Those shall be discussed precisely with the legal advisors when taking relevant decisions. To sum up the main difference is in nature of the establishments of the entity in Ukraine: • in case your aim is to establish a business unit itself, which will carry out economic activity – then, for sure, option of an LLC is the most suitable for the case; • if the main aim is representation of interests of the parent company in Ukraine and establishment/structuring of possible business contacts – then, establishment of an RO will be enough for this purpose. 2011–2019

LVIV'S HALL OF FAME

THE (CARPATHIAN) MOUNTAIN MIRACLE RECA L LING K A RPAT Y FC ’S M AGICA L RUN TO T HE US SR CUP CH A MPIONSHIP This year marks the 50th anniversary of the biggest sporting achievement in Lviv’s history – the run to the USSR Cup championship by Karpaty Lviv! Lviv Today looks back on the accomplishment and what it meant for the Western Ukrainian capital. It’s not everyday that Karpaty FC brings home a trophy. In fact, since its founding in 1963, the 1969 USSR Cup is the only hardware the team has managed to win. But oh – what an achievement! The only second-tier club to ever capture the title, the achievement was a monumental occasion for the city. Sure, there have been other big moments for the club – gaining promotion to the big league for the first time, making the Ukrainian Cup final a couple of times, a brief foray into the world of the Europa League – but nothing compares to that magical run in 1969. The team celebrated by bringing some of its heroes to a Karpaty game earlier this year. We wanted to let you relive the achievement in our pages.

THE BIRTH OF KARPATY FC While Lviv is famous for hosting the first football game in Ukraine – an event marked by a statue in Stryiskyi Park – the city didn’t really have a club we could call our own until Karpaty was formed in the early ‘60s. Like many clubs of the time, it was made up of factory workers, in Lviv’s case it was Silmash, a major weapons factory. Before this, the only team in the city was the Red Army squad – which, for obvious reasons, lacked the popularity and Ukrainian identity demanded by Leopolitan fans. Karpaty started in the Soviet Second League and it didn’t take long for the squad to start knocking on the door of promotion to the big league. The team started their upswing in 1966 and by 1968 had reached the promotion tournament, held in Sochi. Needing a win in its last game of a four team, round-robin tournament, the team was devastated by drawing 1-1 due to an obvious offside goal by its Russian opponent (Uralmash Sverdlosk). The same referee that missed the call would play a major role in next season’s USSR Cup run.

THE (CARPATHIAN) MOUNTAIN MIRACLE The miracle run to the USSR Cup championship nearly ended before it even begun. In its first game of the tournament – in the Round of 64 – the team was forced to a replay (which is how they settled draws in football at the time) against lowly Azovets

48

(Zhdanov). Down early in the replay, the team delighted the home crowd by scoring two first half goals to advance 2-1.

FIRST ROUND: KARPATY (LVIV) 0–0 AZOVETS (ZHDANOV) FIRST ROUND (REPLAY): KARPATY (LVIV) 2 – 1 AZOVETS (ZHDANOV) The second game of the tournament was a big event in the city – thousands of Leopolitans headed out to Druzhba Stadium to endure a nervy 1-0 victory thanks to an 86th-minute penalty by star striker Gennady Likhachev.

SECOND ROUND: KARPATY (LVIV) 1–0 RED ARMY (ODESA) This is when the team discovered that they were something special. Ararat (Yerevan) was one of the top teams in the Soviet Union in the late ‘60s – they would go on to win its own USSR Cup just four years later. The teams played to a 0-0 draw in front of 38,000 ravenous Leopolitans that became distraught when the visitors scored first in extra time. But the mettle of our champions shone through when Likhachev scored on a penalty to draw even and captain Ihor Kulchytiskyi scored 3 minutes from time to advance.

THIRD ROUND: KARPATY (LVIV) 2–1 (ET) ARARAT (YEREVAN) After knocking off heavily-favoured Ararat in the previous round, the tournament was already viewed as a success for Karpaty. The team had never advanced to the fourth round and was “playing with house money” – and the results showed. The team was full value in a comfortable 2-0 over a strong Chornomorets (Odesa) team to set up a quarterfinal match with a tough Trud (Voronezh) team.

FOURTH ROUND: KARPATY (LVIV) 2–0 CHORNOMORETS (ODESA) By this time, Soviet authorities were none too pleased that a plucky second tier team from Western Ukraine had advanced so far in the tournament. Our boys in green and white had to endure a horrendously officiated game – especially after the team went up 1-0 on a Likhachev penalty 30 minutes into the contest. Just 7 minutes from time, a bogus penalty was awarded to Trud. An aggressive move by goalkeeper Viktor Turpak scared the shooter into missing and salvaged the welldeserved win. Off to the semifinal!

QUARTERFINAL: KARPATY (LVIV) 1–0 TRUD (VORONEZH) LVIV TODAY  |  January 2020

By now, Karpaty was the talk of the town. While most of the world was glued to the TV to watch the Apollo 11 mission – which would land on the moon the day after the semifinal – more than 50,000 Leopolitans (roughly 1 out of every 11 Leopolitans of the day) crammed into Druzhba Stadium to catch the miracle Ukrainian team that could. With a match against Shipbuilder (Mykolaiv), it was guaranteed that a Ukrainian team would play for the USSR Cup. Karpaty had some swagger after topping Trud in difficult conditions and didn’t let the home fans down by scoring two first-half goals on the way to a confident 2-0 win. Lviv was going to the USSR Cup final!

SEMIFINAL: KARPATY (LVIV) 2–0 SHIPBUILDER (MYKOLAIV) The little team from the heart of the Ukrainian homeland would face the powerful Red Army team from Rostov-on-Don in no other locale than Vladimir Lenin Stadium in central Moscow. Expected to lose by almost everyone but themselves and their fans, the team was buoyed by 20,000 travelling superfans that peppered the team with the Ukrainian folk song ‘Cheremeshyna’. It was a surreal atmosphere – Ukrainian fans belt out Ukrainian folk songs in the heart of Moscow at the height of the Cold War. The game started out roughly for the Ukrainian side, with Red Army going up in the 20th minute. But while they didn’t score before half, the team did take control of the play, gaining confidence for an epic second half comeback. Likhachev once again gave Karpaty the offensive spark with a 62nd minute strike before Volodomyr Bulgakov netted the winner against the stunned Russian team

LVIV TODAY  |  January 2020

just four minutes later. There were some tense moments at the end, including a Red Army goal disallowed for offside – by the same referee who punished Karpaty the year before! He would later go on to say that he had acted “on orders” to ensure that the Russian team was promoted. Karpaty – a second tier team from the most Ukrainian part of Ukraine (as Leopolitans are fond of saying) – had managed to pull off the impossible by becoming the only junior league team to ever win the USSR Cup – a feat that would never again be repeated! The accomplishment is all the more remarkable if you remember that at that time, most players came from the city they played for (many of the surviving members still live in Lviv). Scores of fans awaited the team when they arrived back in Lviv and players got kisses from the Leopolitan ladies and free taxi rides to the city centre to celebrate with their beloved fans.

FINAL: KARPATY (LVIV) 2–1 RED ARMY (ROSTOV-ON-DON) THE NEXT ‘MOUNTAIN MIRACLE’ The victory sent the young team to their first UEFA Cup Winners Cup (the forerunner to the Europa Cup). Despite a valiant effort to overcome a first leg 1-0 defeat at home, the team would manage no better than an entertaining 3-3 draw to get knocked out in the first round. Karpaty finally managed to make it to the top tier of Soviet football in 1971 and finished as high as high as fourth place (in 1976), just four points from becoming champions. The ‘80s saw the club fall on hard times and the team was merged with the Red Army team – an unpopular

move as the brightest young stars were often sent to the Moscow Red Army team. After re-emerging as Lviv’s only team shortly before independence, Karpaty would march to the second-ever Ukrainian Cup final. The last major highlight came in 2010, when Ukrainian national team star Artem Fedetskyi sent Lviv’s Ukraina Stadium ablaze after he scored an extra time equalizer – just two minutes after conceding a potentially tournament-ending marker – that saw the team through to the Europa League for its first and only time. Never count the boys in green and white out – you just never know when they’ll provide another Mountain Miracle. Lee Reaney

S 2 V' T 0 I P O LV

Lviv Today has your guide to the Top 20 things to do in the Western Ukrainian capital in 2020. Whether you’re into fashion, sports, culture, history, or food and drink, Lviv will show you why it’s called the ‘Soul of Ukraine’ and Lviv Today is your guide to what’s going on!

1. LOOK DOWN ON THE CITY AT HIGH CASTLE While there may be some nicer lookouts in Lviv – some restaurants and the Lviv City Hall tower come to mind – none have the charm of the city’s High Castle lookout (off Vysoky Zamok St.). Located just outside the city centre, the 413-metre hill is Lviv’s highest point and offers a 360o panoramic view of the entire city. While the castle that gave the hill its name is long gone, fortifications on the site date back as long as Lviv itself! You may want to bring a picnic with you, or a beverage of choice to enjoy at the top. One of the city’s most romantic spots, if you’re lucky – you might even see one lucky Leopolitan couple get engaged! 2. WALK THROUGH HISTORY IN OUR UNESCO-RECOGNIZED CITY CENTRE Once considered a hidden gem, Lviv’s wonderful city centre has become one of the most attractive in all of Europe. This, in part, has to do with

56

UNESCO naming the area in 1998 an “outstanding example of the fusion of the architectural and artistic traditions of eastern Europe with those of Italy and Germany”. UNESCO monies have also helped regenerate the area to its former imperial splendour. Guided tours are obviously worthwhile, but be sure to hike up the 400 steps at Lviv City Hall (1 Rynok Sq.) to catch perhaps the best view of Lviv’s Old Town from 65 metres up. If you’re around at the turn of the hour, check out the royal trumpeteers just below! And if you can, be sure to visit during Lviv City Day (2 May), when there are plenty of additional activities designed to highlight the great history of Ukraine’s most European city. 3. LIVE LVIV’S ‘HAUTE MONDE’ AT THE LVIV OPERA & BALLET THEATRE Is there any building more famous in Western Ukraine than Lviv’s wonderful Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svoboda Ave.)? Built in the late 19th Century, the Neo-Renaissance building is so iconic that it’s featured on Ukraine’s 20 UAH bill. With some of Europe’s biggest orchestras, ballets, and operas stopping by each year, there is always a mustsee event going on at the venue. Many of Ukraine’s biggest cultural groups perform there each year, including the Virsky National Folk Dance Ensemble, the Dumka National Choir, and many of the country’s top artists. A favourite meeting spot for locals and visitors alike, why not begin or end your evening downstairs at the magnificent Opera Underground café (28 Svoboda Ave.), where in addition to the signature, one-of-a-kind cocktails, you can catch a glimpse of Lviv’s famed Poltva River!

4. DISCOVER LVIV’S ROYAL SIDE AT THE MAGNIFICENT POTOCKI PALACE In a city renowned for its architecture, Lviv’s magnificent Potocki Palace (15 Kopernika St.) is a sight to behold. Built in the late 19th Century for Alfred Potocki, the then-Governor of Galicia, the pristine French Neo-Renaissance palace that once hosted royals now is the home of the luxurious Lviv Art Gallery. The palace is also the host of some of the city’s biggest events, including a Leopolis Jazz Fest stage, LvivMozArt, and the city’s most important art exhibitions. When Lviv’s incredible Mariya Muzychuk challenged for the Women’s World Chess Championship in 2016, the lavish rooms of the Palace were the backdrop. With tours for less than two Euros, Potocki Palace is one of Lviv’s must-visit architectural gems. 5. WANDER THROUGH LVIV’S ICONIC CATHEDRALS You can discover the rich and colourful history of Lviv’s storied past just by a tour of the city’s iconic cathedrals. Why not start with the ones depicted in Lviv’s rich and colourful tourism logo – the Armenian Cathedral (7/13 Virmenska St.), the city’s oldest; the Orthodox Assumption Church’s Kornyakt Tower (5/7 Ruska St.); the Baroque Catholic Latin Cathedral (1 Katedralna Sq.), and the 17th Century Bernadine Monastery (3A Soborna Sq.). Of course, don’t limit yourself to those – the incredible Dominican Church (1 Muzeina Sq.) and imposing St. George’s Cathedral (5 Yura Svyatoho Sq.), among others, are also must-visits! 6. RELIVE ANCIENT UKRAINE AT SHEVCHENKIVSKYI HAI Whether you’re looking to learn about the ancient history of Western Ukraine, wanting a unique place to celebrate a cultural holiday, or just searching for a serene place to spend some time outdoors, why not do what the Leopolitans do and head over to Shevchenkivsyi Hai Museum of Folk Architecture & Rural Life (1 Chernecha Hora St.)? One of Europe’s largest open-air parks, Shevchenkivskyi Hai features ancient buildings from across Western Ukraine, including the 17th Century Church of St. Nicholas. Be sure to check out cultural celebrations like the Ukrainian Culture & Dance Festival (August), Ivana Kupala Day (6-7 July) and, of course, Ukrainian Christmas (6-7 January)! 7. CHEER FOR OUR BOYS AT A KARPATY LVIV GAME There’s no bigger sport in Ukraine than football – and there’s no bigger team in Western Ukraine than Karpaty Lviv. While the team has fallen on relatively hard times recently, it’s illustrious past has seen a USSR Cup (check out our story later in this issue) and a berth in the Europa League. Start your game day at the official Karpaty FC store (3 Mykoly Voronoho St.) where you can pick up some green and white swag before heading to the park at Ukraina Stadium (Lypova Alley). Keep your eyes open for when Ukrainian heavyweights like Dynamo Kyiv and Shakhtar Donetsk stop by, or try to catch the Lviv Derby against FC Lviv. LVIV TODAY  |  January 2020

8. CATCH A CONCERT AT ARENA LVIV Since opening so that Lviv could host EURO 2012, the city’s Arena Lviv (199 Stryiska St.) has become a major hub for some of the city’s biggest events. It’s hosted the Europa League semifinal, a world cruiserweight boxing championship, some of the city’s major conferences, and all of Lviv’s biggest concerts. While it’s too early to tell if Lviv’s-own Okean Elzy will make a fourth appearance at the venue, keep an eye out for some major concerts, including in August when the Ukrainian Song Project returns. Designed to highlight Ukraine’s incredible musical talent on Independence Day, the event regularly draws some of the country’s biggest acts, including Alyosha, Tayanna, and Tina Karol. 9. TAKE A STROLL THROUGH LVIV’S LOVELY STRYISKY PARK With Lviv’s city centre teeming with tourists during the popular summer season, sometimes Leopolitans and guests of the city just need to get away from the buzz of it all. There is no better place to do this than in Lviv’s lovely Stryisky Park (off Stryska St.). With exotic trees, meandering pathways, and a romantic lake that is home to swans, the city’s central park has long been an area where Leopolitan artistic types have headed to for inspiration. Hosting international exhibitions, a greenhouse, and a children’s area, Stryisky Park remains one of Europe’s most peaceful and beautiful parks. It’s especially popular among students of the nearby Ukrainian Catholic University (17 Iliarona Svjentsitskoho St.) and eventgoers at that

EXPLORING LVIV

institution’s sparkling, new Sheptytsky Centre (2A Kozelnytska St.). If you ever need to get away, just head over to Stryisky Park. 10. RAISE A GLASS AT THE LVIV BEER MUSEUM While Lviv is rightly known as one of Europe’s coffee capitals, the city also boasts a rich history in the brewing of a different kind of drink altogether – beer. Dating back to a popular monastery brew in 1715, the Lvivske brand today is one of Ukraine’s most popular. Featuring its omnipresent 1715 blend, its popular series of Robert Doms brews, and a rich holiday ‘Rizdvyany’ drink, the company has a flavour to match any beer-lover’s tastes. While the company is yet to offer tours of the actual brewery, there is a popular Lvivarnya Beer Cultural Experience Centre (18 Kleparivska St.) tour that includes a tasting. Tracing the history of brewing from ancient Egypt to medieval Europe to Polish Lviv to the modern day, you can end your tour with an elegant meal in the site’s renovated beer hall. Craft brew lovers should stop by Pravda Beer Theatre (32 Rynok Sq.) to check out one of Ukraine’s most popular craft brands and catch some live music, while many restaurants offer tinctures like ‘meduvukha’ or ‘nalewka’, with Lviv’s Drunk Cherry (11 Rynok Sq.) liqueur being wildly popular. 11. TAKE A RIDE ON ONE OF LVIV’S LEGENDARY TRAMS Where would Lviv be without its beloved trams? One of the first cities in the Austro-Hungarian Empire to adopt the tram, the popular mode

57

EXPLORING LVIV of transportation has a history as rich as the city itself. It has inspired countless artistic representations – from incredible murals of the trolleys travelling through the city centre to legendary Leopolitan a cappella group Pikkardiska Tertsiya’s popular hit ‘The Old Tramway’, a trip to the Western Ukrainian capital is not complete until you take a ride on the ‘old tramway’ yourself. Much like the city itself, the tram continues to modernise. Why not check out Lviv’s first fast tram route to Sykhiv aboard a carriage built at Lviv’s-own Elektrotrans? Or, for a bit more history, stop by Lviv’s LEM Station (57 Dmytra Vitovskoho St.), housed in the former tram depot at Sakharova and Vitovskoho streets. Hosting many of Lviv’s cultural initiatives, the building is currently being renovated to its former glory. 12. PAINT THE TOWN RED AT LVIV’S MOST POPULAR NIGHTCLUBS While Lviv’s top clubs, pubs, and restaurants can change at a dizzying pace, there are some that have stood the test of time better than others. None is more popular than Kryjivka (located “somewhere on Rynok Square®”), which with more than one million visitors a year could be Europe’s busiest restaurant. Themed as the last hideout from the WWII-era Ukrainian Patriotic Army, it’s best to go with locals – who will make sure that no ‘saboteurs’ are in your midst… For a nightcap, it’s best to check the latest issue of Lviv Today to see what hotspots are hopping each month, but !FESTRepublic Club (24–26 Staroznesenska St.) and the Malevich Concert Arena & Night Club (2 Chornovola Ave.) are two of the most reliable venues for hot contemporary acts and Lviv’s most bumping dance floors. 13. GET YOUR RETRO ON AT THE LEOPOLIS GRAND PRIX – 29–31 MAY If retro is your thing, then be sure to get all revved up for the Leopolis Grand Prix. While Lviv knows how to retro with the best of them – be sure to check out the inimitable Lviv Retro Day during the Lviv City Day celebrations in early May – perhaps the most popular is the city’s retro car race through the city centre. Meant to mark they heyday of Ukrainian automobile culture when Lviv hosted the top-level Lwow Grand Prix from 1930-33, the festival now draws hundreds of retro car lovers who show off their vehicles and race through the notoriously-difficult historic track around the ‘Lviv Triangle’ (from Vitovskoho to I. Franko to Stryiska and Maidan Heroes). So, grab your leather bomber, slide on your best Ivy cap, and flip that scarf back like you’re a WWI pilot – and enjoy the retro ride of a lifetime. 14. GET YOUR GROOVE ON AT THE LEOPOLIS JAZZ FEST – 25–29 JUNE Is there a bigger event in Ukraine than Lviv’s annual Leopolis Jazz Fest? More than just being one of the biggest festivals in Ukraine, the jewel of Lviv’s summer calendar has been recognised as one of the finest jazz festivals in all of Europe by publications like UK’s The Guardian. Each year the programme features hundreds of the world’s top jazz musicians, like Diana Krall, Chick Corea, Herbie

58

Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, and Kenny Barron. With stages in the historic city centre, outside the majestic Potocki Palace (15 Kopernyka St.), and on the main stage at B. Khmelnytsky Culture & Recreaction Park (4 Bolharska St.), as well as jam sessions and autograph signings throughout the city, the city’s biggest festival attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Simply put, if there is one thing to see in Lviv in 2020 it’s our incredible Leopolis Jazz Fest. 15. GET YOUR CHIC ON AT THE LVIV FASHION WEEK Ukraine has carved out a reputation as being home to some of the most beautiful women and most talented artists in the entire world, so when Lviv Fashion Week rolls around, it’s the city’s chance to shine. Among the most glitzy and glamorous of any of Lviv’s festivals, the twice-a-year Lviv Fashion Week allows some of the region’s top fashion designers to parade their newest seasonal lines at some of Lviv’s finest venues. From the D. Halytskyii International Airport to Potocki Palace to swanky restaurants and art galleries, the haute couture lifestyle of Lviv’s jet set is on display for all to see. If you happen to be in town in spring, you might want to check out the annual Miss Lviv pageant at the Opera & Ballet Theatre, where many of Lviv’s finest young ladies compete to represent the region at the annual Miss Ukraine pageant. As an official sponsor of both events, keep reading Lviv Today for more information prior to the 2020 events. 16. CELEBRATE LVIV’S MULTICULTURAL HERITAGE AT THE ETNOVYR FOLK FESTIVAL – 20–24 AUGUST Having been part of three separate empires in the century before gaining independence in 1991, it’s no surprise that Lviv knows how to celebrate its multicultural past. The city simply doesn’t do it better than during the Etnovyr Folk Festival, held each August to coincide with Ukrainian Independence Day (August 24). One of the city’s most colourful festivals, Etnovyr features vibrant performances of international ensembles, wonderful parades through the historic city centre, tasty presentations of national cuisine, song and dance workshops, and evenings of friendship. If you want to discover Lviv’s wonderful multicultural life, this is the event to visit! 17. ENJOY A LEGENDARY BREW AT THE LVIV COFFEE FESTIVAL – SEPTEMBER In Lviv, coffee is a religion. So, surely the Lviv Coffee Festival is one of the can’t-miss events on Lviv’s 2020 calendar. One of the “Coffee Capitals of Europe”, the city toasts its beaned brew with Ukraine’s biggest coffee celebration each year. Over 150,000 visitors take in a wide variety of caffeine-infused events each year, which is capped off by the naming of Lviv’s Best Coffeehouse. You may want to start out at the Lviv Coffee Mining Manufacture (10 Rynok Sq.), where you can not only learn how to brew a proper cup, but also see where coffee is mined! You can always finish off at any of Lviv’s award-winning cafés, like the cultural institution that is Dzyga (35 Virmenska St.) or the historic Virmenka (19 Virmenska St.).

18. CATCH THE CARNIVAL AT THE GOLDEN LION INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL – SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER Perhaps the oldest theatrical festival in all of Eastern Europe, Lviv’s Golden Lion International Theatre Festival has been transforming Lviv’s cobblestone streets into a carnival each autumn for over 30 years. Attracting many of Europe’s top theatrical groups each year, the festival has become one of the hottest theatre events on the continent. Performers take over the streets and squares of the city centre, offering an unforgettable European experience. Be sure to check out a show at Lviv’s iconic Italian Courtyard (6 Rynok Square) for a taste of Shakespeare’s Verona right here in Western Ukraine! 19. INDULGE YOUR SWEET TOOTH AT THE LVIV CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL – OCTOBER For those with a serious sweet tooth, no festival in the city is more highly-anticipated than the wonderful Lviv Chocolate Festival. Known worldwide for its rich chocolate and its ancient chocolate-making traditions, the festival is a fine celebration of Lviv’s most popular treat. With a chocolate goods fair, workshops led by professional chocolatiers, chocolate-making demonstrations and contests, and an incredible chocolate sculpture exhibition, the festival has something for everyone. Why not get started over at the popular Lviv Handmade Chocolate (3 Serbska St.) restaurant, where you can see how the rich delicacy is made and try out the tasty treat yourself. And as the festival happens over the Valentine’s Day holiday, maybe bring your special love over to the Kissing Spot (5 Katedralna Sq.) for an extra ‘sweet’ moment. 20. ENJOY THE WORLD’S LONGEST HOLIDAY SEASON IN LVIV – 19 DECEMBER – 14 JANUARY When you celebrate the world’s longest holiday season – nearly a full month from mid-December to mid-January – you can be sure there are plenty of events to catch. Leopolitans and guests of the city are sure to take in the romantic Christmas market (Rynok Square & Svoboda Ave.), with many revelers enjoying a glass of gluhwein under the majestic Christmas Tree with Lviv’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre in the background. There are events for everyone – Catholic Christmas at many of the city’s cathedrals, Ukrainian Christmas at Shevchenkivskyi Hai, Malanka (Old New Year’s) parades through the city centre, the Koliady (Christmas carols) Festival, the tasty Pampukh (donut) Festival, or even just ice skating outside Lviv City Hall in our UNESCO-recognised historical centre. Leopolitan clubs offer special themed evenings, while our theatres have seasonal concerts and shows. With ice sculpting competitions, appearances by St. Nicholas, and the always popular Parade of the Christmas Star, there simply is no better or more romantic place in Europe to celebrate the holiday season.
