TRUMP IMPEACHMENT COULD BE BR AND UKR AINE'S

BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT At first glance, the entire Trump impeachment scandal looks like being terrible news for Ukraine. With Russian forces still firmly entrenched in the Donbas, the last thing Ukraine needs is a crisis in relations with its most important ally. While the potential security implications of impeachment are ominous enough in their own right, the optics of the scandal are arguably even worse. As US coverage has intensified, Ukraine has become a byword for graft and political sleaze, with President Trump’s defenders frequently dismissing the nation as “one of the most corrupt countries in the world.” This is not a winning brand message, by any stretch of the imagination. Nevertheless, the fact remains that in the space of a few short months, the impeachment story has garnered Ukraine far more international attention than the country has enjoyed in the previous 28 years of its independent existence. The question Ukrainians should now be asking themselves is whether there really is no such thing as bad publicity.

The true significance of the current global spotlight only becomes apparent when viewed in the context of Ukraine’s historic problems with international anonymity. This low profile is no accident. It is the product of longstanding

and remarkably successful Russian efforts to suppress Ukrainian identity and prevent the emergence of a separate Ukrainian polity. Russia’s motives are not hard to grasp. After all, Ukraine’s perceived closeness to Russia involves issues of security, geography, ethnicity and religion stretching all the way back to a common foundation myth that sees both modern nations trace their roots from the early medieval Kyiv Rus state. This makes possession of Ukraine, along with Kyiv as the “mother of all Russian cities”, central to Russia’s own sense of self. Indeed, when viewed through the Russian prism, the real separatists in today’s Ukraine are the Ukrainians themselves.

Eventually, the 24-hour news cycle will move on to the next big scandal and the details of Ukraine’s involvement in the whole impeachment affair will begin to fade from the collective memory. However, the boost to Ukraine’s brand recognition will linger on. Countries regularly invest billions of dollars in PR campaigns in the hope of securing a fraction of the attention Ukraine is currently enjoying. For a nation that has spent centuries struggling to emerge from the shadows of Russian imperialism, such international exposure is quite literally priceless. The press frenzy surrounding the Trump impeachment probe now presents Ukraine with an unparalleled international stage upon which to share its side of the story. There is certainly much to tell. Ukraine’s long journey towards statehood is an epic in its own right with the capacity to shock and awe even the most seasoned of observers. The success of HBO’s spring 2019 Emmy award-winning television miniseries “Chernobyl” proves that there is an international audience for Ukrainian dramas. The challenge now is for Ukrainians themselves to take on the role of storytellers.

MONTH LVIV’S CHRISTMAS SPLENDOUR The spirit of Christmas is coming to Lviv and Leopolitans can look forward to the merry season with lots of fun activities! After a long year, now is the time to take a break and enjoy shopping, dining, and socialising. The Christmas season in Lviv is an absolute joy. Be sure to catch the lit-up trade malls and festive Christmas markets, where you can pick up all of your gifts and souvenirs from charming wooden chalets. Explore your way through the holiday attractions and fairs that lure merrymakers with their permeating aromas of natural soaps and perfumes and traditional Christmas honeys. Feast on gingerbread or bratwurst, enjoy the warm gluhwein, and maybe sing a carol or two at Lviv’s traditional Christmas fair, taking place from 13 December to 19 January on the alley from the Opera & Ballet Theatre to the Shevchenko monument and on Rynok Square. Skating is still one of Europe’s most popular winter activities and Leopolitan winter sports lovers and guests of the city can take part at the small, yet delightful central rink on Rynok Square from 18 November until 20 March. Skate rental is available on-site and instructors are there to help newcomers learn the joys of skating. Open daily from 10.00 to 22.00, don’t worry if the weather doesn’t cooperate – the ice is protected by high-technology freezers, meaning it’s good to go in temperatures up to +15 C. Enjoy the magical atmosphere and olde-worlde charm of Lviv’s very own Christmas tree in front of the Opera & Ballet Theatre. The lights and decorations, combined with the historic setting, lend a real spirit of Christmas to the city centre. From organ recitals to nativity plays, magical theatre shows, and festive exhibitions – the varied programme of jolly events for all ages is organised each year by Lviv’s cultural institutions. Keep on the lookout for the Ice Sculpture festival, which will take place at the beginning of January! One of the season’s highlights is the ‘Blaze of the Christmas Star’ festival at the Museum of Folk Architecture & Rural Life (1 Chernecha Hora St.) on 7 January and in the city centre (Rynok Square, Prospect Svobody, St. George Square) on 8 January. Celebrating an ancient tradition, Ukrainians make giant (up to 2 metres) Christmas stars, which are the ‘stars’ of the show. Fans of traditional Ukrainian customs, songs, and carols won’t want to miss the Velyka Kolyada (Great Carol) festival, which will be held from 5-20 January at the St. Eucharist Church (3 Muzeina Square). Lviv’s popular Pampukh Holiday will take place this year on 18–19 January at the Museum of Folk Architecture & Rural Life. Now in its 11th year, this tasty fiesta celebrates Leopolitans’ love of fried, sugary dough with a competition of the deep-fried treats in the city’s central square. Over a dozen of Lviv’s restaurants and coffeeshops with submit their best pampukhs with only one walking away with the coveted title of ‘Lviv’s Best Pampukh’. It’s easy to see why the holiday season is known as ‘the most wonderful time of the year’. Спочатку св. Миколай, потім Санта Клаус, а потім – Дід Мороз – святковий сезон рушив у Львові! Цілий рік українці набирались сил перед святами, щоб традиційно зайнятись шопінгом, вечерею та інтенсивним спілкуванням. Чорна п’ятниця, кібер-понеділок, знижки, черги, купони – все, аби заманити клієнта, який повинен викласти свої кровні за те, що йому не дуже вже й потрібне. А, може, вам таки вдасться купити саме ті подарунки та сувеніри на численних передсвяткових базарах у центрі Львова, де завжди пахне шашликами та глінтвейном, грає музика і, взагалі, всім уже весело. Тут можна придбати писані пряники, зігрітись філіжанкою запашної кави, заспівати колядкудві соло або у компанії і, взагалі, почуватись добре і весело, і ніхто вам нічого не скаже. Традиційні львівські різдвяні ярмарки відбудуться з 13 грудня до 19 січня на алеї навпроти оперного театру, де красуватиметься головна львівська ялинка (не "йолка"), аж до пам’ятника Шевченку та на площі Ринок. Ковзани сьогодні, як і багато віків тому, є однією з найпопулярніших зимових розваг у Європі, а сучасна львівська ковзанка розпочинає свою роботу 18 листопада і завершує 20 березня. Місцеві любителі зимових видів спорту та гості міста можуть приходити зі своїми ковзанами (фігурними чи хокейними) на площу Ринок чи позичити їх на місці. А ще там є досвідчені інструктори, які охоче допоможуть початківцям освоїти цей вид спорту. Ковзанка працює щодня з 10 ранку до 10 вечора, і не хвилюйтесь, якщо температура буде плюсовою – льодове покриття скейтинг-рингу, як казали колись, створюється сучасним холодильним обладнанням, і лід витримає аж до +15С°. Уся алея, що веде до оперного театру, прикрашена сотнями маленьких світлячків; наче казкові, дерев’яні хатинки заманюють відвідувачів різнобарв’ям та ароматами. У програмі святкування по всьому місту пройдуть органні концерти і вертепи, театральні вистави та виставки робіт народних майстрів. Буде також традиційний конкурс крижаних скульптур, призи в якому присуджуватиме публіка і спеціальне журі. Серед найцікавіших подій варто відзначити фестиваль "Спалах різдвяної зірки" на території музею народної архітектури та побуту (Шевченківський Гай) 7 січня та в центрі міста (пл. Ринок, пр. Свободи, пл. св. Юрія) 8 січня. Відзначаючи давню традицію, українці роблять величезні (часом до 2 метрів) різдвяні зірки, які і є "зірками" цього фестивалю. Шанувальники традиційних українських звичаїв, пісень та колядок також зберуться на фестиваль "Велика Коляда", який відбудеться з 5 по 20 січня у Домініканському соборі (пл. Музейна, 3). Популярне у Львові "Свято Пампуха" цього року відбудеться 18– 19 січня знову ж таки у Шевченківському Гаю. Вже 11 раз поспіль львів’яни, разом з гостями міста, відзначають всенародну любов до цих золотистих кульок дріжджового тіста (які також відомі в інших країнах світу, але "Свято Пампуха" є тільки у нас!). Пампухами з різноманітною начинкою будуть частувати просто неба на площі Ринок, а львівські ресторани й кав’ярні змагатимуться за почесний титул "Найкращий львівський Пампух". Відвідувачі зможуть на власні очі побачити, як їх випікають, дізнатись їхню історію та деякі рецепти найулюбленішої різдвяної випічки у Львові. І саме тут кожен (хто ще цього не зрозумів) зрозуміє, чому цей період в році відомий як "найчудовіша пора року". Співання колядок у родинному колі і випікання пирогів, приготування куті й святкових подарунків під ялинку – усі святкові традиції займають особливе місце у серці кожного українця. Отож, докладіть трішки зусиль, щоб зробити цю пору року незабутньою, щоб посмішка засяяла на обличчях близьких, знайомих і незнайомих, щоб усі зрозуміли, чому Львів – найкраще місце для святкування Різдва у Європі. A CAPELLA LEGENDS CHRISTMAS DOUBLE-BILL 9 January at 16.00 and 19.00 at M. Zankovetska Drama Theatre (1 L. Ukrainka St.) Ukraine’s much-loved a capella group will visit Lviv’s M. Zankovetska Drama Theatre on 9 January where they will perform hits from their legendary albums in two holiday concerts. Formed right here in Lviv in 1992, Pikkardiyska Tertsiya (Picardy Third) started out as an a cappela quartet that adapted Ukrainian folk songs. In time, the group expanded to six members and now has a repertoire of nearly 300 works, including liturgical music, folk songs, world hits, and many popular original compositions. For nearly 30 years, Pikkardiyska Tertsiya has been at the forefront of the Ukrainian music scene. They’ve collaborated with many musicians, won many awards, and have released many CDs. You might just hear them break out some Elvis Presley or Queen in one of the 12 languages they pull out for their concerts. However, the group is likely most famous for its song Plyve Kacha, which has become the unofficial requiem for the fallen at Euromaidan and in ATO. Their Christmas concerts in Lviv will feature hits from their legendary albums as well as 10 songs from their ‘Fairytale on White Paws’ project, written in collaboration with talented blind kids from all over Ukraine. Leopolitan music lovers and guests of the city can get into the spirit of the season during two festive concerts at Lviv’s wonderful Opera & Ballet Theatre on 3 January. Both concerts will feature Leopolitan virtuoso violinist Oleksandr Bozhyk playing some of the world’s top hits. РІЗДВЯНІ КОНЦЕРТИ ПІККАРДІЙСЬКОЇ ТЕРЦІЇ 9 січня о 16.00 та 19.00 у театрі ім. М. Заньковецької (вул. Л. Українки, 1) Це було у Львові 1992 року. Четверо студентів Львівського музучилища створили гурт, який співав без супроводу (a capella). Згодом для повноти звучання приєднались ще двоє учасників, і робота закипіла – репетиції, концерти, конкурси. Ідея та її втілення виявились настільки вдалими, що вже наступного року співаки стають лауреатами фестивалю "Червона Рута" в Донецьку, а ще через рік записують дебютний альбом під оригінальною назвою "Піккардійська Терція". Сьогодні їх репертуар налічує понад 300 творів, серед яких і літургічна музика, і народні пісні, світові хіти та багато оригінальних композицій. Вже майже 30 років "Піккардійська Терція" перебуває на передньому плані української музичної сцени. Вони співпрацювали з багатьма музикантами, здобули багато нагород та випустили багато компакт-дисків. Вони навчились співати 12 мовами світу, щоб досконало виконувати твори з репертуару Елвіса Преслі чи Queen. AN ENCHANTING EVENING WITH THE ELEGANT ZLATA OGNEVICH 30 December at 19.00 at M. Zankovetska Drama Theatre (1 L. Ukrainka St.) Here’s your chance to meet the elegant Zlata Ognevich, the famous Ukrainian pop singer with the amazing voice. Known for representing Ukraine at Eurovision 2013, she is no stranger to the competition, having finished fifth and second in 2010 and 2012 national competitions respectively, before breaking through in 2013 with her hit ‘Gravity’. She then released her first two singles ‘To Me’ and ‘Doloni’ and her first studio album, ‘The Edge’. She was also a guest of honour at the 85th anniversary of the Montserrat Caballie in Kyiv. Lviv’s wonderful Opera & Ballet Theatre will host a special double-performance by the acclaimed H. Veryovka National Honoured Academic Folk Choir on 20 January. The pride of Ukrainian art, stars of the Ukrainian choral world, and ambassadors of Ukrainian music, the Veryovka Folk Choir is named after its legendary composer and conductor, Hryhoriy Veryovka, who formed the group in 1943 to promote the development, preservation, and popularisation of folk song traditions. Bukovel – Ukraine’s largest and most popular ski resort – is set to host Bukovel Cup Giant slalom (GS) competitions on the 21-22 December weekend. This is the opportunity that skiers have been waiting patiently for – to meet each other and compete after a long midseason break. The Bukovel Cup is the ultimate competitive environment for amateurs, with a specially prepared FIS-compliant GS slope that requires mastery of speed and maneuverability. Participants will be divided into groups based on age, so everyone has the opportunity to meet their friends and peers head-to-head! Men and women aged 16-80 can join the competition in one of the following categories:

INTRIGUING ' MAID-IN-LAW ' to Hi t th e Big Sc reen in 2020 ‘Maid-in-Law’, a romantic period piece and one of Ukraine’s biggest post-independence film releases, will premiere on 16 January. Produced by Film. ua with the support of the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture, the film is based on Sofia Andrukhovych’s novel ‘Felix Austria’, which is known for the depth of its character portrayals and suprising diversity. The story begins in 19th-Century IvanoFrankivsk, where Doctor Stanislav Anger loses his wife in a fire, but manages to save two girls – his daughter Adelya and his housekeeper’s daughter Stefania. In a moment of despair, he decides to raise the two together. Fast forward 25 years and the girls are grown and inseparable. Adelya is now married, while Stefa tends to the house and has a passion for cooking. They are still in the dark as to their true relationship – sisters and friends or maid and mistress? In this tale of love and jealousy, double-entendres and secrets, the boundary between reality and fiction disappears altogether. Elegant outfits, sophisticated dishes, and endless promenades… what will happen when the illusion starts to disspate and reality begins to appear? The diverse cast meant diverse casting, with actors of different ages, experiences, and cultural backgrounds. German doctor Anger is played by film and TV star Oleksandr Kobzar (The Guide, Crazy Wedding), Greek Catholic priest Yosyp is played by Kyiv’s young theatre and film star Sergiy Volosovets (Love in Chains), while the role of Polish police officer Vostsekh is portrayed by standup comic Yevhen Yanovych, known for his leading role in 2016’s ‘Infoholic’ and his work with the Mamakhokhotala comedy studio. International actors include Georgian actor and model Vazha Goderdzishvili in the role of handsome Jewish fella Velvel, Polish actor Sebastian Cybulsky as mysterious illusionist Ernest Tom, and

in the role of the boy who lent his name to the novel is 8-year-old Ukrainian-Palestinian actor Yasin Faradzhallakh. Iconic writer Yuryiy Andrukhovych, the father of ‘Felix Austria’ author Sofia, also has a role in the film. Poland’s Marianna Januszewicz (Dywizjon 303, Il Tratudttore) plays the romantic lead of Ukrainian maid-in-law Stefa, while the Polish-German mistress Adelya is portrayed by Ukrainian Film School grad Alesya Romanova. The challenging task of adding comedy to the dramatic character Ivanka is taken up by famous Ukrainian actress Maryna Koshkina (The Rising Hawk, The Sniffer 3), while the charismatic Jewish lady Baumel is brilliantly played by Viktoria Tavrika, known for her work with underground theatre Postplay. Olena Gall-Savalska, a People’s Artist of Ukraine and lead actor at Kherson’s M. Kulish Music & Drama Theatre landed the role of fish vendor and Velvel’s mother, while one of the complicated choreographed dance numbers features Kateryna Kukhar, a People’s Artist of Ukraine and prima of the Ukrainian National Opera. Notably, Natalya Vasko – winner of the 2017 Dzyga (Ukrainian Academy Award) for Best Actress – plays a noble lady in the theatre. У хвилину відчаю він вирішує виховувати їх разом. Минає 25 років, дівчата вже дорослі й нерозлучні. Аделя тепер одружена, а Стефа доглядає за домом і захоплюється кулінарією. Та вони досі не розуміють, хто вони одна одній: сестри та подруги чи служниця та господиня? У цій повісті про кохання та заздрощі, двозначність і таємниці, межа між реальністю та вигадкою зовсім зникає. Елегантні вбрання, вишукані страви та нескінченні прогулянки... що буде, коли ілюзія почне розвіюватись, й почне з'являтись реальність? У фільмі зібрались актори різного віку, досвіду та культурного походження. Німецького лікаря Ангера грає кіно- й телезірка Олександр Кобзар ("Поводир", "Скажене весілля"), греко-католицького священика Йосипа грає молодий київський актор театру й кіно Сергій Волосовець ("Кохання в ланцюгах"), а роль польського поліціянта Войцеха грає естрадний комік Євген Янович, відомий завдяки його ролі у фільмі "Інфоголік" 2016 року та роботу з комедійною студією "Мамахохотала". Серед інших акторів, зокрема, актор та модель Важа Годерджишвілі з Грузії в ролі красеня-єврея Велвеля, польський актор Себастьян Цибульскі в ролі таємничого ілюзіоніста Ернеста Тома, а в ролі хлопчика, ім’ям якого названо роман – 8-річний українсько-палестинський актор Ясін Фараджаллах. У фільмі також знявся письменник Юрій Андрухович, батько авторки роману – Софії. Польська акторка Маріанна Янушевич (Dywizjon 303, Il Traduttore) в ролі романтичної служниці Стефи, а в ролі її польсько-німецької господині Аделі – випускниця української кіношколи Алєся Романова. S T. NICHOLAS IS CO MIN G TO TOWN I t’s that time of the year again – when children eagerly think of all the gifts and goodies they could imagine themselves playing with next year. And while Ukraine joins in the tradition of spoiling the little ones at this time of year, the country continues to define which holiday traditions should persevere. As with other holidays, Ukraine is struggling to define its own post-Soviet way at Christmas – and that’s where St. Nicholas comes in. Popular worldwide – why even the season’s most famous poem is titled ‘A Visit From St. Nicholas’ – the modern incarnation in Ukraine has replaced Did Moroz, the Soviet-era Santa Clauseesque character still popular in modern Russia, as the season’s most cherished tradition. So, what’s this St. Nicholas all about in Ukraine?

BECOMING SVYATTY MYKOLAI Like other traditions, St. Nicholas (or Svyatty Mykolai in Ukrainian) derives from a popular 3rd Century bishop. He is known for secretly giving gifts to children, the sick, and the poor. Over time, his deeds became legendary – he would save women from prostitution by paying their dowries, save condemned men from the tip of the executioner’s sword, and guide lost sailors through inclement weather. Widely popular in Europe throughout the Middle Ages, where Christian nations would mark the anniversary of his death with a feast (Dec. 6), he gathered a special following in the Netherlands, where children would find coins in their shoes on St. Nicholas Day. The Dutch brought their St. Nicholas (or Siinterklaas in Dutch) traditions with them as they immigrated to the United States. These traditions eventually morphed into modern day Santa Claus, who is often nicknamed St. Nicholas.

REPLACING DID MOROZ Santa Claus began as a moralist-type figure – he knows if you’ve been bad or good (so be good for goodness sake!) – but the tradition has become, over time, more secularist and materialistic. While St. Nicholas has long been venerated in Ukraine, the Soviets tried to destroy the influence of religion and actively attempted to replace its traditions. They banned Christmas and introduced Father Frost (or Did Moroz in Ukrainian). Originally the pagan Slavic wizard of winter, the character was revived as part of New Year’s celebrations – which the Soviets still allowed. Eventually adopting a Snow Maiden (or Snegoruchka in Russian) granddaughter, the modern, secular characters became immensely popular in the Soviet Union, and remain that way in Russia and Belarus today. Religion has become a key battle in forging the modern Ukrainian identity, which could explain why the country continues to lean towards replacing secular and popular-in-Russia Did Moroz with the more religious and traditional Svyatty Mykolai.

CELEBRATING SAINT NICHOLAS DAY So, just how do Ukrainians go about celebrating Saint Nicholas Day (Dec. 19)? Much like in the West, Ukrainian children write letters to Saint Nicholas outlining what they would like to receive should they be judged to have been good throughout the year. They either leave these on their windowsills for his helpers to pick up or they mail them to his Manor in Hutsulshchina National Park (St. Nicholas Manor, Pistyn, Kosiv district, Ivano-Frankivsk region, 78633). Schools perform Saint Nicholas plays and sing songs dedicated to the saint. Kids will often bake special ‘Mykolaychky’ cookies and leave them under their pillows for when he pays them a visit. When he comes, it is said he brings a couple of angels and devils that guide him in his choice of leaving a gift under your pillow or, if you’ve been bad, a stick to beat you with! As gift-giving is an essential part of the holiday, Ukrainians take extra care to make sure that Saint Nicholas visits all children – especially if they don’t have parents. Many churches collect

gifts that are distributed on 19 December to orphanages and children of soldiers killed in ATO. In Lviv, you can visit St. Nicholas Church near High Castle – one of the city’s oldest – or the 18th Century Boyko St. Nicholas’ Church at Shevchenkivskyi Hai. Of course, for a proper holiday experience, head out to St. Nicholas’ Manor in the IvanoFrankivsk region and meet St. Nicholas for yourself! Be St. Nicholas This Year! THE ‘BL ACK HOUSE’ IS RESTORED The restoration of one of Lviv’s most famous architectural monuments – the Chorna Kamianytsia (Black House) – is finally finished! A monument of the late Renaissance, it was originally built by architects P. Barbon and P. Rymlianyn in 1588-89 with a third floor addition in 1596 by P. Krasowski. Currently the building is used for exhibitions of the Lviv History Museum. The building took its name from the dark grey colour the façade’s hewn stone had taken by the late 16th-Century. The reconstruction won a 270,000 USD grant through the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation in 2016, which was used for restoration of the façade, water insulation, roof renovation, and archeological digging without further shoring of the foundation. All interior renovations were done through the use of the Lviv History Museum’s own funds. Since 2001, the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation has provide nearly $1 million USD to support 14 separate projects in Ukraine.

Реконструкція отримала грант в розмірі 270 000 доларів через Посольський фонд США зі збереження культурної спадщини у 2016 році, який був використаний для реставрації фасаду, виконання гідроізоляції, реконструкції даху та археологічних розкопок без пошкодження фундаменту. Всі реконструкції інтер'єру були виконані за рахунок власних коштів музею. Починаючи з 2001 року Посольський фонд США зі збереження культурної спадщини надав майже 1 мільйон доларів США для підтримки 14 різних проектів на території України.

NEWLY-APPOINTED FRENCH AMBASSADOR VISITS LVIV Newly-appointed French Ambassador to Ukraine, Etienne de Poncins, visited Lviv on 25 November. On his first visit to the Western Ukrainian capital since beginning his diplomatic mission on 20 August, Mr. de Poncins met with Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, Lviv Regional Administration Head Markiyan Malskyy, and local business leaders to discuss joint economic and cultural projects. He also attended a roundtable at the Lviv Business School to discuss the local IT industry, its impact, and its potential development. The Ambassador noted that French tech is growing rapidly which should create many opportunities for new, mutually-beneficial projects and potential investments. In Ukraine, French business is represented by companies operating in many different economic spheres, including agriculture, automotive, banking & finance, and retail.

‘UNDER THE HIGH CASTLE’ POLISH FILM FESTIVAL The ‘Under the High Castle’ Polish film festival was held in Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk last month. Organised by the Polish Consulate in Lviv and the Polish Institute of Cinematic Art, the event showcased over 20 films and had a number of supporting events, including panel discussions, cinema history lessons, exhibitions, and concerts. Leopolitan film fans and guests of the city were treated to modern Polish gems like Marek Koterski’s comedy ‘7 Uczuc’ (7 Emotions), Filip Bajon’s romantic drama ‘Kamerdyner’, and Tomasz Konecki’s charming summer-holiday-vibe story ‘Cale Szczescie’ (Their Lucky Stars).

Festivalgoers thoroughly enjoyed the evening with actors and writers Mark Bukowski and Maciej Dancewic ahead of the screening of their film ‘Dolega-Mostowicz – Kiedy Zamykam Oczy’ (When I Close My Eyes). The Lviv event opened with the Ukrainian premiere of ‘Kurier – film Jan Nowak-Jezioranski’ (Courier), about the Polish social worker, journalist, politician and patriot that served in World War II as one of the most important resistance fighters in the Home Army. The festival returns next year as it continues to improve Ukrainian audiences’ familiarity with Polish cinema.

MALSKYY FAMILY FOUNDATION CHARITY GALA DINNER On November 29th Lviv’s Bankhotel played host for the charity evening organized by Dr. Andriana Malska, inspired founder of the “Malskyy Family Foundation”. The event featured presentation of educational project of newly created foundation, all set to support internship program of medical students, members of local branch of UMSA (Ukrainian Medical Students’ Association) abroad. “Last year I found out about UMSA, when I got acquainted with representative of local branch Mr. Andriy Pylypets who asked me to become mentor at case conference with New England Medical Journal. Seeing eyes of young and aspiring students filled with desire for knowledge, made me care a lot!” – commented Andriana Malska. «UMSA Lviv is local branch of “Ukrainian Medical Students’ Association” (UMSA) – massive unity of medical students in Ukraine. Main values of UMSA are high-quality medical education, open level of possibilities for students, advocation of their rights, constant personal and professional development. UMSA is rightful member of International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA), which is comprised of over 130 countries-members. From now on as part of life of UMSA comes professional and scientific exchanges for medical students in numerous countries of the world. БЛАГОДІЙНИЙ ВЕЧІР ФУНДАЦІЇ РОДИНИ МАЛЬСЬКИХ ГО "Фундація родини Мальських", засновницею якої є Андріана Мальська, організувала 29 листопада у Bankhotel благодійний вечір у колі однодумців, на якому презентувала освітній проект новоствореної фундації в підтримку програми стажування студентів-медиків, членів Львівської філії UMSA (Українська Медична Студентська Асоціація) закордоном. "Моє знайомство із UMSA почалося рік тому, коли до мене звернувся попередній представник львівського відділення Андрій Пилипець, із проханням бути ментором на розборах клінічних випадків із New England Medical Journal. Прагнучі до знань очі молодих та кмітливих студентів не могли залишити мене байдужою! “UMSA Lviv – це представництво "Української медичної студентської асоціації" (UMSA) у Львові – наймаштабнішого об’єднання студентів-медиків в Україні. Основними цінностями UMSA є якісна медична освіта, рівність можливостей для студентів та адвокація їх прав, постійний як особистісний, так і професійний розвиток. UMSA є повноправним членом Міжнародної федерації медичних студентських асоціацій (IFMSA), до складу якої входять понад 130 країн-членів. Відтак, невід’ємною частиною життя UMSA є професійні та наукові стажування для студентів-медиків у безліч різних країн світу. Відтак я вирішила створити фонд, на меті якого було б надавати стипендії на такі стажування, адже досвід який вони здобудуть там є вкрай необхідним для зміни світогляду майбутніх лікарів України” – сказала Андріана Мальська. Цього року на стажування пройшло 25 студентів, ми плануємо оплатити усім їм 250 євро вступного внеску в асоціацію, необхідного для проходження стажування. Також з метою підтримки було створено вебсайт фундації www.malskyyfoundation. com, де знаходиться коротка інформація про кожного студента, відтак бажаючі зможуть надати іменну чи анонімну стипендію та оплатити авіаквиток. kraine’s wine industry is going through a revival and branching out into sophisticated blends after suffering a blow from Russia’s annexation of Crimea’s famed vineyards. According to the Association of Winegrowers & Winemakers of Ukraine (AWWU), when Russia seized the Black Sea peninsula in 2014, Ukraine lost more than half of its bottled wines – mainly semi-sweet and dessert bottles. Still, the loss of Crimea and the armed conflict in the East has ironically given a giant push to Westernstyle dry wines, especially from the Odesa, Kherson, and Transcarpathia regions. AWWU says that Ukrainian production of dry wines has increased by 7-9% each year since 2015 – a giant leap for an emerging industry. Slowly leaving its Soviet legacy of sweet wines in the past, Ukraine is finally adapting to European tastes and standards.

Exports of non-sparkling wines more than tripled from 2014-17 and now Transcarpathia is reviving the grape varieties that were destroyed by Soviet collectivized agriculture. The forested and mountainous region has become known for its dry, white wines made from Riesling, Gewuerztraminer, and Leanka grapes. Now it’s up to the winegrowers. Besides the quality grapes, Transcarpathian land has its advantages – its special microclimate is ideal for the temperamental European varieties.

A new, improved model, IQOS 3 DUO, has joined a line of stylish devices at the end of October and immediately became popular with the users. The features’ positive changes were so significant that units planned for two weeks were sold out within the first few days of sale. The reason for that is simple, the people behind the DUO model took into account not only fans’ main wishes, but also introduced additional innovations. So, what’s so special about IQOS 3 DUO? When the gadget for heating tobacco by Philip Morris first appeared, it took the market by storm. hen Marcin Swiecicki took up his post as Ukraine’s new Business Ombudsman in October, his arrival in Kyiv was more homecoming than departure. The veteran Polish politician boasts an impressive CV of senior posts in his native country including Minister for Foreign Economic Relations, Deputy Economy Minister and Mayor of Warsaw, but for much of the past three decades, neighboring Ukraine has been prominent thread running through his career.

Swiecicki first came to Kyiv a quarter of a century ago in the early 1990s to take up a role with an international think tank. At the time, the goal was to support the initial stages of Ukraine’s post-Soviet economic transition. “Many of the recommendations we made then are still valid today,” he quips. This was to be one of two extended periods in the Ukrainian capital, with a second think tank posting lasting from 2007 until 2011. More recently, as a two-term member of the Polish parliament, he has spent the past eight years serving as Deputy Chair of the country’s parliamentary committee on Ukraine. “I was also the first Polish politician to speak on Maidan. I gave a speech the day before the Vilnius EU summit in November 2013,” he recalls, adding for good measure that he was also a regular attendee of Euromaidan solidarity events in Warsaw throughout the tumultuous winter of 2013-14. Following the Revolution of Dignity, he also advised the Ukrainian government on local self-government reform. This strong Ukraine background made Swiecicki a formidable candidate for the position of Business Ombudsman following the departure of Lithuanian Algirdas Semeta in mid-2019, with the Pole beating off competition from over 100 candidates during an international recruitment process in order to land the role. Semeta had been Ukraine’s first Business Ombudsman and Swiecicki is quick to praise his Baltic predecessor, noting the “very high standards” he set in everything from internal recruitment to building productive relationships with the various state bodies the Business Ombudsman Council aims to engage and influence. Launched in spring 2015, the Business Ombudsman Council is a post-Maidan creation designed to serve as a bridge between the business community and the state. It is widely LVIV TODAY | December 2019

regarded as among Ukraine’s most effective innovations of the past six years, enjoying a reputation for constructive contributions that address private sector complaints while encouraging improvements to the business climate. Backed by a number of international donors and Ukraine’s largest business associations, the Business Ombudsman Council does not hold any official state authority and must instead rely on what Swiecicki refers to as soft power tools. “Advice, opinions and recommendations – this is our ammunition,” he says. The results certainly speak for themselves. The Council has genuine nationwide reach, with more than half of all complaints coming from beyond the Kyiv region, and is regularly namechecked as a positive addition to the business community. Unsurprisingly, Swiecicki sees maintaining this impressive performance as one his chief tasks. He is hopeful that agreement will prove possible in the coming months on a longawaited Ombudsman Law that promises to codify the status of the Business Ombudsman Council and pave the way for possible co-financing from the Ukrainian state budget. “This law would help solidify our position as an institution. It would send a signal that the Business Ombudsman Council is now and important and stable element of the country’s business architecture.”

Among the challenges he faces, Swiecicki identifies so-called raider attacks on businesses as being particularly problematic. “Rule of law, protection of property rights and the predictability of public officials are all very important for businesses,” he reflects. “Raiding, even if it only directly affects a relatively small number of individual companies, has the potential to negatively impact the entire business climate.” He advocates a two-pronged approach to the issue, with greater transparency in state registers serving to improve property rights, alongside the adoption of a tougher stance towards those implicated in raider schemes. “Even when these attacks are prevented and businesses are returned to their rightful owners, the perpetrators currently tend to go unpunished and are free to seek fresh targets. This absence of an effective deterrent cannot continue.” With a two-to-four-year term ahead of him and an acquired taste for the broad historical sweep of events in today’s Ukraine, Swiecicki is setting his sights high. The Pole says that alongside the everyday work of improving the country’s business architecture and pushing back against corrupt practices, he hopes to make a meaningful contribution to Ukraine’s European integration aspirations. “I would like to convince the Ukrainian business and political communities that full implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU will be beneficial for the entire Ukrainian economy. It will facilitate trade, introduce EU standards, and attract international investors.” For a man who has spent much of his career dividing his attentions between Poland’s own national transition and Ukraine’s significantly less straightforward post-Soviet journey, such sentiments are to be expected. “I find Ukraine’s struggle for a European future very moving,” he shares.

The Prime Minister invited a representative from the business community to become a regular participant during the meetings of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, and the first meeting was already held with the participation of Anna Derevyanko, EBA Executive Director. Dmitry Razumkov, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, said that 86 new laws have already been adopted by the newly formed Verkhovna Rada, most of which facilitate business climate and build processes that should bring doing business conditions in Ukraine closer to

the best international standards. Mr. Razumkov assured personally and on behalf of the deputies that the fruitful collaboration between Parliament and business will continue to change the economy together, create jobs and implement the positive changes that the country expects. In his speech, Tomas Fiala, EBA President and CEO of Dragon Capital, said that despite some pauses in investor activity at the beginning of the year caused by the double election, it is currently being renewed. EBA SPECIAL According to Mat ti Maasikas, the Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Ukraine has an enormous potential to increase trade and deepen its relations with the EU. Ukraine needs to use its geographical advantage and all opportunities of the FTA to increase exports to EU countries. EU Ambassador also assured that Ukraine can count on the support of the EU regarding reforms and European integration. EBA “Leveraging the Present” discussion panel united government representatives to discuss what the state authorities are doing now to accelerate the pace of reform. The main task of the authorities is to maintain macroeconomic stability and speed up economic growth. To achieve this, the Government plans to introduce long-term budget planning, complete tax and customs reforms, carry out largescale infrastructure modernization work and implement concession and privatization mechanisms, promote Ukrainian exports and develop the labour market. Also, the top priorities are combating smuggling, fiscalisation, the revival of Ukrainian exports, development of the labor market, etc. The discussion was attended by the Minister of Finance of Ukraine Oksana Markarova, the Minister of Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine Tymofiy Milovanov, the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Vladyslav Kryklii, the Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Yakiv Smolii, the Head of the Customs Service of Ukraine Maxim Nefyodov, the Head of the Tax Service of Ukraine Serhii Verlanov, the Minister of Social Policy of Ukraine Yulia Sokolovskaya and the Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Yulia Kovaliv. owadays it is a quite vulnerable time for business. There is a need to constantly address new challenges: employers need to attract and retain Generation Y and Z employees, raise wages, and look for new tools to increase efficiency. The constant fluctuation of the course, expectations of the global crisis, the global political instability raise the level of adrenaline for many business owners. It is a must to be motivated, resourceful, ready to take risks, to analyze the situation, to act quickly, and to act like never before.

However, to move forward confidently you need a solid foundation. Today the company’s values are the factor that keeps it afloat and pushes it forward. In a crisis, values help to survive. There is even a whole science about values – Axiology, a philosophical discipline that studies the nature, types, and functions of values. The modern employee is in search of not only material comfort (clean workplace, easy access, high salary, etc.) but also interesting tasks, pleasant communication with colleagues, short onboarding, the positive influence of the company on society. The client, in turn, requires a professional attitude. From the first step of a customer or employee to an office or factory, the gaps in corporate culture and values are catching the eye. Each company reflects its values through the quality of the products it produces or the services it provides. For this tool to work for the benefit of the company, it is important to make it clear to owners, directors that they

are their main promoters and implementors. They are the ones who should lead by example. However, we cannot impose our values on other people that join us. It doesn't work that way! It is necessary to define the values of the owners, then to find common values between the owners and the executive directors. Next, determine what values unite employees who have been working for 10-15 years of life to the company. Again, look for a common denominator between owners, managers, and employees. The search for the joint continues until at least 5 of the main ones that are in the company are found, from the cleaning department to the owner of the company. Further, it would be good to introduce the values found in hiring employees and make them one of the criteria for making difficult decisions. The process is not easy, but it is

necessary for business development. For the European Business Association, values are a very important tool for further development and integration of companies into the biggest Ukrainian business community. Thanks to them today we have 1103 companies, we employ 80 people, we set ourselves ambitious goals and everyone wants to succeed it. We have a common goal: to make Ukraine a better place to do business. On December 6, 2019, EBA Western Ukrainian Office organizes the Annual General Membership Meeting with the symbolic name #United by values. EBA EVENT Q& A TA X SEMINAR FOR EBA MEMBERS Within the framework of the cooperation between the State Tax Service in Lviv region and EBA Western Ukrainian office, a tax seminar for Tax Committee members was held. The participants were greeted by Vasyl Kresyak, Acting Head of the State Tax Service in Lviv region who briefly spoke about the progress of the service reform and its impact on the efficiency of work.

Dear Arzinger lawyer, I am a foreign citizen, director of Ukrainian LLC. For a certain period of time our enterprise faces with financial difficulties and actually there exist a substantial probability of its insolvency. Please, consult whether a director of a company bears any connected with insolvency risks of a personal liability and, if yes, what measures can be taken in order to decrease them? Thank you. At least three legislative acts prescribe a personal liability of director, connected with insolvency of LLC: Bankruptcy Code of Ukraine, Law of Ukraine On Limited Liability and Additional Liability Companies and Criminal Code of Ukraine. Stated legislative acts prescribe:

• Joint liability of director (to the same extent as a company). Essence of violation: director did not initiate court proceedings on the company’s bankruptcy within one month after a threat of company’s insolvency arose, i.e. a threat that satisfaction of demands of one or several creditors would lead to impossibility to satisfy other creditors’ demands. In order to minimize a risk, taking also into account that director has no right to initiate bankruptcy case without shareholders’ decision, in case of a threat of insolvency it is recommended to immediately inform in written form about such fact all company’s shareholders. • Secondary liability (to the extent of a difference between the total amount of debt and a sum which was actually paid by a debtor to its creditors) and criminal liability of director. Essence of violation: actions of director led to company’s insolvency. Inter alia, legal deeds, signed by director 3 years before initiation of a bankruptcy case, may be invalidated by decision of a court due to several grounds, such as: sale or purchase of a property for non-market prices, free of charge sale of assets, denial from company’s demands to its debtors, early fulfillment of monetary obligations, conclusion of agreement with an interested party etc. In turn, court’s decision on invalidation of legal deed, establishing that such legal deed led to company’s insolvency, may be used when bringing to secondary or criminal liability. Nevertheless, due to complexity to prove director’s guilt in company’s insolvency, court practice in this regard is rare. • Secondary liability. Essence of violation: director did not convoke shareholders’ general meeting in case the value of company’s net assets decreased to amount of more than 50% comparing with the end of the previous year and a company up to three years after the stated decrease was recognized insolvent. In order to minimize a risk, it is recommended to constantly monitor financial results of a company and in case of any doubts to immediately conduct an audit and/or to convoke a general meeting.

Сhess: Leopolitan Wins Prestigious Chess Tournament The famed Tournament of Peace chess competition was held in the legendary Zagreb Palace Hotel from 19–30 November. The tournament has a rich history, with its earliest tournaments in the ‘60s and ‘70s drawing some of the game’s biggest names, including Bobby Fischer. Lviv’s Vassily Ivanchuk walked in the legend’s footsteps by becoming the event’s sole winner by taking 7 points in 10 rounds. With the win, the Leopolitan crossed the 2700-point threshold and move up to No. 38 in the FIDE rankings. Way to go Vassily!

Football: FC Oleksandriya Latest Team to Call Lviv Home It was close, but no cigar for the latest team to call the city’s Arena Lviv home in the Europa League as FC Oleksandriya fell just short of qualifying for the playoffs in its first Europa League action after falling at home to Germany’s VfL Wolfsburg on 28 November. Leopolitan football fans and guests of the city were able to catch entertaining matchups with some of Europe’s finest football clubs this autumn, including entertaining comeback draws against Belgium’s Gent and France’s Saint-Etienne, where an electrifying extra time goal in the 91st minute salvaged the single point. Oleksandriya was the latest team to call the stadium home after Shakhtar Donetsk and Zorya Luhansk brought top-quality football to the Western Ukrainian capital. Olimpik Donetsk also called the stadium home for a period of the 2017 Premier League season, while Karpaty Lviv, FC Lviv, and Veres Rivne have all also used the stadium as a home venue. While Shakhtar, Zorya, and Olimpik were forced to relocate due to the conflict in Eastern Ukraine, Oleksandriya moved to the city after UEFA deemed the city to be too far from an international airport and to have insufficient hotel accommodations. The team averaged 7,316 fans in Lviv, up 3.5x the 1,612 fans the team has averaged through eight Ukrainian Premier League home games (in Oleksandriya) this year.

Archery: National Indoor Championships The Lviv Ministry of Defense’s SKA Summer Sports Base welcomed over 200 athletes from 12 regions to the National Indoor Archery Championships in Lviv last month. LVIV ENTERS RACE TO HOST

2030 WINTER OLYMPICS Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadoviy confirmed in mid-autumn that the western Ukrainian city plans to enter a bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics. The official contest to select a host city is set to get underway next year, but the final decision is not likely to come until 2023, leaving Lviv with plenty of time to put the polish on the city’s bid. Lviv’s candidacy will benefit from the major infrastructure upgrade the city received around a decade ago as it prepared to serve as one of four Ukrainian host cities during the Euro 2012 European football championships. Preparations for Euro 2012 included the construction of a completely new international airport terminal building and improvements to the city’s transport infrastructure.

With a booming tourism industry and rapidly improving connections to the nearby EU, Lviv has a number of obvious advantages as a location for a major international sporting event such as the Winter Olympics. In addition to upgraded airport facilities, Lviv has a growing number of international rail connections that could help European guests reach the city during a future Olympic Games. The local hotel sector continues to expand at a steady if unspectacular pace, while the city boasts a thriving café and restaurant scene geared towards meeting the expectations of international visitors. If selected to host the 2030 Winter Olympics, Lviv would likely split sports events between venues in the city itself and resorts in the nearby Carpathian Mountains.

Lviv’s anticipated 2030 Winter Olympics bid will not be the first time the city has put itself forward as a potential Olympic venue. Back in 2010, Ukraine announced plans to campaign for the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in the western Ukrainian city. Preparations gained momentum for a number of years, with an official bid submitted in early November 2013. However, within a matter of weeks, Ukraine was plunged into political chaos by the outbreak of protests in Kyiv that would eventually escalate into the Revolution of Dignity and lead to the Russian invasion of Crimea and eastern Ukraine. With parts of the country under Russian occupation and the national economy in critical condition, Ukrainian officials quietly shelved this initial Lviv Winter Olympics bid in summer 2014.

Lviv’s new dreams of hosting the 2030 Winter Olympics will face stiff competition. Although rival bids have yet to be confirmed, America’s Salt Lake City and Norway’s Lillehammer are both reportedly considering campaigns to host the Games. At present, Ukraine’s only experience as an Olympic host nation came when it served as a secondary venue during the Soviet era 1980 Moscow Olympics, but the country does have a strong recent record of staging showcase international events. In addition to Euro 2012, Ukrainian capital Kyiv earned considerable kudos for successfully hosting the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest and the 2018 UEFA Champions League Final.

AS THEY QUALIFY FOR EURO 2020 The Ukrainian national football team rounded off their Euro 2020 qualification campaign on 17 November with a 2–2 draw in Serbia that confirmed first place in a group also containing current European champions Portugal. The draw against Serbia meant Ukraine finished the year unbeaten, winning seven games and drawing three. Highlights from a memorable 2019 include a famous 2–1 triumph over Portugal at Kyiv’s Olympic Stadium and a swaggering 5–0 demolition of Serbia in summertime Lviv.

Euro 2020 is only the third major tournament Ukraine has qualified for since the country first began to compete internationally in the mid-1990s. Ukraine made it to the 2006 World Cup in Germany and went on to reach the quarterfinals of the competition, and have also appeared twice in the final stages of the European Championship, but country’s participation at Euro 2012 came courtesy of Ukraine’s status as the tournament’s co-hosts alongside Poland. This is a particularly disappointing statistic given the dominant role of Ukraine in the celebrated Soviet sides of the 1980s. Ukrainian clubs led by Dynamo Kyiv provided the backbone of the USSR team that reached the final of Euro 1988, leading many to predict similar success once Ukraine gained independence. Instead, over the past 25 years the country has established an unwanted reputation as one of world football’s perennial bridesmaids, losing World Cup and European Championship qualification play-offs on five separate occasions. The manner in which his team qualified for Euro 2020 will have been particularly pleasing for Ukrainian coach Andriy Shevchenko. Many questioned the wisdom of his appointment in 2015, pointing to his complete lack of managerial experience and soft-spoken manner. However, the former Dynamo, Milan and Chelsea star has now proven the doubters wrong and will be looking to burnish his reputation further next summer.

Ukraine capped its sterling EURO 2020 qualifying run with an undefeated record after Artem Beseydin’s electrifying injury-time equaliser in its final match in Serbia. As one of only four nations to not drop a match during the entire tournament, Ukraine earned a seed in the top draw group and was drawn into Group C alongside the Netherlands and Austria The fourth team will be decided after the spring playoffs. If Romania manages to qualify out of the Group A playoff, they will join Group C alongside Ukraine. Otherwise, it’s the winner of the Belarus, Georgia, Kosovo, North Macedonia group. Ukrainian fans looking to catch the team live will need to book tickets to Amsterdam for 14 June and Bucharest for 18 and 22 June. Depending on how the team places, fans may need to travel to Budapest (if 1st), London (if 2nd), or Glasgow, Scotland (if 3rd). Should Ukraine make the final, fans could end up in five different countries. To celebrate the 60th anniversary since the tournament was founded, EURO 2020 is being held in 12 countries across the continent, with the final slated for 12 July at London’s Wembley Stadium.

UKRAINE UPDATES ITS CURRENCY

УКРАЇНА ОНОВЛЮЄ СВОЮ ВАЛЮТУ

In addition to the new coins, a new 1000 UAH bill was introduced on 25 Oct 2019. The bill, featuring Ukrainian scientist Volodmyr Vernadskyi, features state-of-the-art design and security features similar to the new generation 20-, 100-, and 500-hryvnia bills already released. New generations of the 50- and 200-hryvnia bills are expected shortly. The introduction of the high-denomination bill was long overdue as it’s the first since the 500-hryvnia bill was released in 2006. At that time, the average monthly wage in Ukraine was 1000 UAH – or two 500 bills. Since then, Ukrainian incomes have jumped nearly ten-fold, meaning twenty 500 bills are now needed. The National Bank of Ukraine is ensuring that the transition to the new bill and coin denominations is as convenient as possible, as people will not be required to exchange their current 1-, 2-, 5-, and 10-hryvnia bills for the foreseeable future.

Окрім нових монет, 25 жовтня 2019 року було введено в обіг нову банкноту номіналом 1000 гривень. На ній зображений портрет українського вченого Володимира Вернадського, вона має сучасні засоби захисту від фальшування, як на нових купюрах номіналом 20, 100 і 500 гривень. Невдовзі очікуються нові покоління купюр номіналом 50 і 200 гривень. Запровадження купюр з високим номіналом давно назріло після випуску купюр 500 гривень 2006 року. На той час середня місячна заробітна плата в Україні становила 1000 гривень – або два рази по 500. Відтоді доходи українців зросли майже в десять разів, тобто тепер потрібно двадцять купюр по 500 гривень. Національний банк України гарантує, що перехід на нові купюри та монети буде максимально зручним, оскільки громадянам не потрібно буде обмінювати свої купюри номіналом 1, 2, 5 та 10 гривень у передбачуваному майбутньому.

Partly due to the currecy’s devaluation following the Russian-backed insurgency in the East and partly due to modern states moving toward coins over bills as a cost-cutting measure, Ukraine will be updating both its coins and bills in the coming months and years. You might have noticed that the one-, two-, and fivekopek coins have already been taken out of circulation (as of 1 Oct 2019), but the plan is to remove the 25-kopek coin in the near future. The new one- and two-hryvnia coins were issued last year, but new five- and tenhryvnia coins are set to be introduced shortly. The five-hryvnia coin featuring Cossack Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi will be released on 20 Dec 2019, while the ten-hryvnia coin featuring Cossack Hetman Ivan Mazepa will be out next year. The move to coins is a popular cost-saving measure; whereas bills have a lifespan of just a year or two, coins last up to 25 years in circulation.

Як уже всім відомо, монети вартістю одна, дві та п’ять копійок виведені з обігу з 1 жовтня 2019 р., а також планується вилучити з обігу монету вартістю 25 копійок найближчим часом. Нові монети вартістю одна та дві гривні були випущені минулого року, і незабаром будуть запроваджені нові монети вартістю п'ять та десять гривень (не гривнів!!!). Монета вартістю п'ять гривень із зображенням гетьмана Богдана Хмельницького буде випущена 20 грудня 2019 року, а десятигривнева монета із зображенням гетьмана Івана Мазепи вийде в наступному році. Перехід на монети – популярний захід економії – якщо купюри мають тривалість лише рік-два, монети витримують до 25 років обігу.
