THE CITY OF HEROES Bonnie Tyler should move to Lviv. The Welsh songster famously sang about needing a hero and Lviv has more than enough to fit the bill. 28 BookForum 15–19 September, different venues across the city For more than 20 years, the Lviv Publishers’ Forum, including the Lviv International Literary Festival and the National Book Fair, has become a powerful platform promoting reading and popularizing book publishing in Ukraine. Now in its 28th year, publishers, readers, and writers will be joined by celebrities, athletes, educators, and journalists at one of the most important social events on the Leopolitan calendar. New publishing houses and editorials are presented each year alongside many other interesting events, like the ‘Non-Stop Night of Poetry & Music’, the ‘Enjoy Reading’ initiative for our seniors, and hundreds of events with Ukrainian and foreign authors. Be sure to check out the ‘Best Book of 2021’ awards ceremony! This year’s honorary guest will be Olha Tokarczuk, a Polish writer, activist, and public intellectual considered one of Poland’s most critically acclaimed and successful authors of her generation. She became the first Polish female prose writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2018 “for a narrative imagination that with encyclopedic passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life.” She was awarded the 2018 Man Booker International Prize for her novel ‘Flights’ and is also known for works like ‘Primeval and Other Times’, ‘Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead’, and ‘The Books of Jacob’. Other special guests at this year’s event include Yolanda Aurora Bohm Ramirez, a Swedish poet, translator, and artist; Agda Bavi Pain, a Slovakian writer, screenwriter, and frontman of the music group Liter Gena; and Adam Horovitz, a poet, journalist, andeditor. Thousands of Leopolitan book lovers and guests of the city attend the Lviv Publishers’ Forum each year to take in the various literature-themed events at several locations throughout the city and online. The 2021 event will be held in the usual format, with some restrictions taking into consideration the reality of the pandemic situation. OLEH VYNNYK AND HIS "MAD LOVE" 2 October at the Gastroli Hall of !FESTRepublic (24–26 Staroznesenska St.) Oleh Vynnyk – one of Ukraine’s most popular singers and celebrities – will perform in Lviv at !FESTRepublic’s Gastroli Hall on 2 October. SPIRITUAL AND TRANSCENDENT KEIKO MATSUI IN CONCERT 22 November at 19:00 at Lviv Philharmonic Theatre (7 Tchaikovskoho St.) Japanese born pianist, composer, and producer Keiko Matsui will offer Leopolitan classical music lovers and guests of the city an elegant and timeless performance at the Lviv Philharmonic on 22 November. Playing with power and grace, Matsui is one of the most transcendent pianists you can experience. Matsui grew up in 1960s-era Tokyo and took her first piano lesson at the age of five. SENSATIONAL "ETHNO CHAOS" BY DAKHA BRAKHA 11 November at 19:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) At once sophisticated and bawdy, at the same time earthy and ethereal – the self-described Ukrainian “ethno-chaos” band DakhaBrakha is back with their refreshingly novel reinterpretation of Eastern European folk music, propelling the ancient into the avant-garde. The four ethno music artists were all part of Dakh – a popular experimental theatre in Kyiv – when the group formed in 2004. The Golden Lion Theatre Festival is a European theatrical tradition and one of the most prestigious forums in Ukraine. Every October since 1989, Lviv’s streets are transformed into a theatre to create a unique carnival atmosphere. This year, the Golden Lion Theatre Festival will turn ancient Lviv into a giant theatre stage from 1 to 8 October. Performances of world-famous plays, long anticipated premieres, and experimental productions of young theatres are all set to leave Leopolitan culture lovers and guests of the city with vivid impressions and deep feelings. Venues across the city will host events, including the Voskresinnia Lviv Academic Theatre, Lviv First Ukrainian Theatre for Children & Youth, Lesia Ukrainka Drama Theatre, Maria Zankovetska Drama Theatre, Dovzhenko Centre,

LVIV FASHION WEEK 2021 16–19 September at !FESTRepublic Club (24–36 Staroznesenska St.) and venues across the city Leopolitan fashionistas and guests of the city will be delighted to know that Lviv Fashion Week is back! The event will feature the newest collections of Ukraine’s top designers, educational lectures, and presentations by Ukrainian perfumers and will take place at !FESTRepublic Club and venues throughout the city from 16–19 September. Be sure to catch the ‘Guardians of Codes’ event kick-off, which will include an avant-garde fashion show and exhibition of fabrics. This spectacular project is dedicated to Galician art from the 19th and 20th Centuries, the ‘Hutsul Secession’ architectural style, and the magnificent work of desk of noted architect, teacher, and public figure Ivan Levynsky. The main programme will take place on 18–19 September and feature collections by such Ukrainian brands as Vozianov, Chereshnivska, B.O.LDYREVA, Vbrana by Svitlana Mykytyuk, KartNate, Zalesova, and Olesya Tsiukh. The event will also see debut shows by Nona Troffish, Lesya Matselyukh, and ID by Dyachenko. Complementing the fashion shows will be the ‘The Fashion Talks’ educational programme, featuring lectures and discussions hosted by the Design House.
Another exciting event of Lviv Fashion Week will be the presentation of clothes, fabrics, and jewelry by Ukrainian designer ZHEREBETSKA in collaboration with Tereza Barabash and Lychko Jewelry. Part of the ‘Guardians of Codes’ kick-off event, the show will be followed by the premiere of “Guardian of Codes’ documentary film by WHAT IF creative studio on 24 September. In October, the exhibition will move to the town of Hlyniany to be presented at the Museum of Weaving and Carpet Making. The programme of Ukrainian perfumers at LFW will include a display of capsule collections by Ukrainian designers dedicated to the fifth anniversary of the creation of Open Store Lviv, a presentation of a collection of perfumed botanical candles make in the traditional Leopolitan style of hand-made glass by Arboretum and Lviv Candles Manufacturer, and the ‘Soliflora – Aesthetics of Solid Perfumes by Vlad Zvarych’ workshop. Zvarych is the Chairman of the Perfumers Guild of Ukraine. Lviv Fashion Week will comply with all safety requirements under the conditions of adaptive quarantine and all fashion shows will be available online. Verne. Asimov. Crichton. Perhaps you’ve heard of them before. All are considered at the top of their field of their respective eras and have had their works covered in big-budget Hollywood movies. But have you heard of Stanislaw Lem? Hailing from Lviv, Lem is considered one of the finest science fiction writers of the 20th Century – not just from the Soviet Bloc, but in the entire world! Lem’s worldview, and that of humanity’s future, was forged in his youth in the Western Ukrainian capital, which was, at the time, part of Poland. Having survived the Nazi occupation of the city, he settled in Krakow, where he wrote most of his most famous works, including ‘Solaris’ – twice made into a big-budget film, including the George Clooney-led 2002 version.
Known for his prophetic views of the future, where he accurately portrayed many of the things we take for granted today, Lem is among the most talented and renowned people to ever come out of Ukraine’s capital of culture. Here are some interesting facts about one of Lviv’s most famous sons:
ATTENDED LVIV’S SCHOOL NO. 8 Born on 13 September 1921, Lem grew up in a plush apartment on today’s Bohdan Lepkiy Street near the city centre. He attended Lviv’s School No. 8 with the hopes of becoming a doctor, like his father. His birth certificate was changed to 12 September because of superstition. LVIV TODAY | Autumn 2021
SURVIVING THE WAR Lem was 20 when the Nazis invaded Lviv. His Jewish background meant his family was in enormous danger. Lem was branded with a Star of David, a victim of a pogrom, and had to falsify papers to avoid being put in the Lviv ghetto – much of which was then transferred to the Nazi extermination camps in Poland.
REMEMBERING LVIV As with many writers, Lem’s formative years in Lviv greatly influenced his later writings and he never forgot his roots. You can learn more about Lem’s time in the Western Ukrainian capital in his autobiography ‘Highcastle: A Remembrance’, named after Lviv’s popular lookout.
STALINIST SOCIAL REALISM IN SPACE Following the Soviet seizure of West Ukraine, Lem’s family was forced to resettle in Poland, where he ended up in Poland. His first novels were extensively censored and characterised by Stalin’s state-mandated “socialist realism”. They painted a rosy picture of a utopian future where social progress was supported by technology. While Lem later disavowed the works, they cemented him as one of Poland’s top writers.
SMART PHONES, SEARCH ENGINES, AND 3D PRINTING One of Lem’s first works, 1955’s The Magellanic Cloud, shows just how prophetic his writings would become. About humanity’s first interstellar travel to the Alpha Centauri system, he introduces concepts such as “pocket receivers” (smart phones), the “Trion Library” (search engines), and “automata”, which could produce 3D printing.
REVOLUTIONS SPAWN ‘GOLDEN PERIOD’ A wave of popular uprisings in the Soviet bloc in the mid-1950s marks the beginning of Lem’s ‘Golden Period’ – a dozen years of remarkably fertile literary output. He imagined several different universes and populated them with fantastic and gripping stories, releasing a string of challenging novels that questioned both the human condition and the limits of human knowledge – and provided even more prescient predictions.
THE FIRST INTERNET TROLL In 1957, nearly 40 years before the Internet as we know it would first emerge, Lem introduced the idea in his Dialogues, a collection of philosophical essays which criticized the planned economies of the Eastern bloc. After first using the invention he predicted so many years earlier, he famously quipped, “Until I used the Internet, I didn’t know there were so many idiots in the world.”

UNTIL I USED THE INTERNET, I DIDN’T KNOW THERE WERE SO MANY IDIOTS IN THE WORLD. century before they first appeared. ‘Lectons’ were wildly popular audiobooks where people could listen to what we might now call podcasts. ‘Optons’ were tablets that could be used as e-readers. His description has been turned into a popular meme: “The books were crystals with recorded contents. They could be read with the aid of an opton, which was similar to a book but had only one page between the covers. At a touch, successive pages of the text appeared on it.”
SOLARIS GETS A GEORGE CLOONEY REMAKE At the peak of his prowess in 1961, Lem released perhaps his most successful novel – Solaris. The story about a team of scientists struggling to communicate with a highly intelligent alien ocean is a seminal example of Lem’s thematic emphasis on the limitations of human rationality. The novel has been adapted for film, radio, and theatre, including the 2002 version directed by Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh and starring George Clooney.
VR AND FAKE NEWS Lem’s journeys into the future continued to lead him to places the world wouldn’t arrive at until decades later. In 1964’s Summa Technologiae, a collection of philosophical essays, he speaks about a ‘phantomaton’ machine that can create alternate realities. In 1968’s His Master’s Voice, a deeply philosophical novel about a team of scientists attempting to decipher a message from space, he predicts a future of ‘Fake News’ by questioning what happens when freedom of expression is used to drown out facts with “floods of imposters”.
THE LEM AFFAIR The Science Fiction Writers of America awarded Lem honorary membership in 1973 due to his renown as the most prominent sci-fi writer in the Eastern Bloc. Shortly thereafter, the outspoken Lem criticized English-speaking science fiction, calling it ‘derivative’ and saying that it “consisted largely of sterile elaborations on a handful of threadbare themes that had been developed by H.G. Wells and Olaf Stapleton.” Needless to say, his membership was revoked.
‘DICK’ISH ALLEGATIONS So popular had Lem become, and so prolific his works, that none other than Philip K. Dick (of Man in the High Castle fame) – one of the other preeminent sci-fi writers of the 20th Century – alleged that there was no way that Lem could have
written all his works alone. Dick believed that a committee of KGB agents were actually penning Lem’s novels and went so far as to contact the FBI with his allegations!
THE MATRIX, THE SIMS, AND FUTURAMA Lem’s influence continues to be felt in the 21st Century – in films, on TV, and even in video games. David X. Cohen, cocreator of 1999’s Futurama – one the all-time great animated sci-fi shows – credits Lem as an inspiration for the series, specifically referring to the story ‘The Eleventh Voyage’ from 1957’s The Star Diaries. Will Wright, creator of The Sims – one of the best-selling video game series of all-time – also credits Lem as a primary inspiration. Wright lists one of Lem’s most popular works, 1965’s Cyberiad, as the genesis of the idea. Academy Award-winning film series The Matrix also owes its genesis to Lem, specifically his idea of a perfect simulation in Summa Technologiae.
FINAL YEARS The social upheaval in Poland caused by the Solidarity movement saw Lem take his talents to Austria in the early 1980s where he spent his time penning philosophical essays. Opinionated until the end, Lem was always disappointed with the science fiction genre and was a pessimist regarding technological progress. But why paraphrase when Lem said it best? “Intellectual masturbation is the contenting of oneself with the promise in place of the delivery.” – A Perfect Vacuum
YEAR OF LEM – CELEBRATIONS FROM KRAKOW TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION In honour of the 100th anniversary of Stanislaw Lem’s birth in Lviv, the Polish government has designated 2021 as the Year of Lem. Exhibitions, conferences, festivals, and a wide variety of other activities will be held to mark the occasion. LVIV CELEBRATES ITS FAMOUS SON Lviv is also celebrating Lem in 2021. Lviv City Council approved an official Programme of Celebration to mark the 100th anniversary of Lem’s birth in the city. The program is designed for 2021 and defines the strategy of citywide events to promote the figure and creative heritage of the writer. The first to mark the 100th anniversary of Stanislav Lem in Lviv will be held TETRAMATIC audiovisual art festival. The festival will go on until October 17, 2021. The main events of the festival will take place in LEM Station (57, D. Vitovskoho St.) and RadioGarage (6, Knyazya Romana St.). EASTERN EUROPE'S LARGEST IT PARK PROJECT of people is a value we share, we underlined the potential of a joint venture and managed to realise the development of the award-winning shopping centre Forum Lviv. Tell us, please, what is your fondest memory of Lviv? Another cool question! Well, to be honest, I have many and it’s difficult to choose. It varies from spending the weekend with our kids and their grandparents, to the opening of Forum Lviv. But I wouldn’t want to forget the many, many super valuable and enjoyable, dinners, lunches, and other interactions. What is your relationship to IT Misto?
Gawein, welcome! We’ve invited you to tell us more about the project that everyone in Lviv – indeed, all over Ukraine – is talking about. What can you tell us about Lviv’s new IT Park? Actually, let me correct you a little bit. We’ve been thinking about what name would best reflect this project, to show that the main goal is to create a city full of innovation, creativity, and new knowledge and experience. We also wanted a name that would be easily identifiable around the world as Ukrainian. So, without further ado … welcome IT Misto! Sounds cool – and with a pretense of something new. Yes – and it doesn’t just sound new. It will actually be something new for Lviv. So, we know you as the GM of this great project. But who is Gawein Minks as a person? That’s a good question to start with as it gives me an instant smile. I’m an energetic and entrepreneurial person who enjoys life and respects others. I’m a family man, a workaholic, and a sports fanatic. What are your ties to Lviv? I was employed by the Blackstone company Multi from 2006–18 and in 2010 they needed a director to manage their Kyiv office. The company had a partnership with Lviv businessman Volodomyr Zhenchak and, due to my position, we were in a sort of ‘pre-arranged wedding’, you could say. As respect

Well, as an outcome of the development of Forum Lviv, Mr. Zhenchak and I developed a friendly and respectful business relationship. So, when I departed from Multi, it was only logical that we would continue to work together. As IT Misto is so inspiring and will have such a massive impact not only for Lviv [but for Ukraine], I’m grateful to be the GM of this project so that I can really contribute. I’m a non-executive board member, so I represent the shareholders, but to be honest – the entire team acts as if they’ve made the entire investment themselves, so titles matter less – it’s a total team effort! In your view, what is IT Misto really about? Wow! That what it’s about! Although you see artist renderings of cool buildings, it’s actually not so much about real estate, but something far more life changing. Look – many CEE countries are facing what’s called ‘brain drain’. But not in Ukraine, and certainly not in Lviv! There are so many talented IT people and well-managed and kick-ass IT companies. To support their excellence and performance as world class companies, we’re developing a city membrane – an eco-system – to give them the best work environment to grow personally and as a business. It’s an ecosystem of networks and cooperation that will include all the facilities you could think of – now, or in the future – housing, entertainment, sports, more fun, leisure, shopping, and education!

How will the citizens of Lviv benefit? The city will become more competitive, better placed on the European – if not the world map. More investments for infrastructure, roads, and public areas. And more companies overall. But let me be clear – IT Misto will be open 24/7, 365 days a year for everyone! We read about partners. What can you tell us about them? We have all kinds of partners. First and foremost, of course, are our founding IT partners – our tenants: GlobalLogic, N-iX, Intellias, SoftServe, and Perfectial. We are also in discussions with a few other really cool IT companies. Unfortunately, at this stage, I can’t reveal who they are. And, of course, our muchrespected former Brookfield CEO that invests via his wealth fund! Last, but not least, of course, is the Polish State Export Bank and BGK – the two Polish banks that support the project with 80 million Euros! Construction has already been announced. Has anything changed? The project was supposed to begin before COVID and, needless to say, that has been a showstopper. Companies have seen 95% of the workforce work from home. What’s good is that the companies that faced those problems have young employees who have a strong desire to stay engaged, to be part of something bigger. To facilitate that, one needs to be in a best-in-class work and living centre like IT Misto. So, all engines have restarted and we’re scheduling a start in Q4, 2021! There are also rumours about a SoftServe Campus. How should these be taken? SoftServe is a super successful and fast-growing company that I believe already has seven offices in Lviv. The owners have an opportunity at the former prison. Right now, it’s an opportunity – but they’ll have to draft a strategy later. Building a company or building real estate, it’s two different worlds that move at different speeds. So, we believe their strategy will be more and more focused on developing residential at that site. We’re happy for SoftServe to be one of our partners and will support each other however we can. We are happy if Lviv develops different new projects and possibilities, but we are absolutely certain that IT Misto will be among them. LVIV TODAY | Autumn 2021

LvivMozArt Lviv hosted one of the biggest musical events of the year – the LvivMozArt International Festival of Classical Music – from 26–29 August. Now in its fifth year, this year’s event was themed ‘reflections of classics in the present’ and was dedicated to the 230th anniversary of the birth of Franz Xaver Mozart – the pianist, composer, and conductor whose life was closely connected to Lviv. The former train depot – Lem Station – served as the main concert venue, with seven other special locations across the city featuring more than 23 concerts combining symphonic, chamber, choral, experimental, and electronic music with video projections
and theatrical performances. Among the most exciting events was the ‘Lviv and Mozart: From History to the Present’ exhibition, which presented unique archival finds, lithographs, and music from Mozart’s time – including those he used himself – as well as works of contemporary art dedicated to him and his music. Other highlights were the ‘United by Mozart’ online forum that brought together Ukrainian music scholars from around the world with members of the European Mozart Ways Society and Stiftung Mozarteum Salzburg, and the unveiling of the Franz Xaver Mozart sculpture by Austrian artist Sebastian Schweikert.
LvivMozArt У Львові відбулася одна з найбільших музичних подій року – 5 Міжнародний фестиваль класичної музики "LvivMozArt". Він був присвячений до 230-річчя з дня народження Франца Ксавера Моцарта – композитора, піаніста та диригента, життя якого було тісно пов’язане зі Львовом. Тема фестивалю – рефлексії класики в сучасності. Колишнє трамвайне депо – Lem Station – стало головним концертним майданчиком, разом із сьома іншими спеціальними локаціями, на яких відбулось понад 23 події, що поєднали симфонічну, камерну, хорову, експериментальну та електронну музику з відеопроекціями та театральними виставами.
Серед найцікавіших подій – Проєкт Ковчег Україна : Музика. Майже 3-годинна антологія шедеврів української музичної культури минулого та сучасного. Виставка "Львів та Моцарт: від історії до сьогодення", на якій були представлені унікальні архівні знахідки, літографії та нотні видання часів Моцарта-сина. Зокрема і ті, якими він сам користувався, а також твори сучасного мистецтва, інспіровані постаттю Франца Ксавера Моцарта. Серед інших важливих моментів – "Міжнародний онлайн – форум "Об'єднані Моцартом". А також відкриття скульптури Франца Ксавера Моцарта австрійського художника Себастьяна Швайкерта.

ANIMAL RIGHTS MARCH Lviv hosted the Animal Right March on 5 September, which saw hundreds of Leopolitan animal lovers march through the city demanding an end to animal oppression. Exciting activists from UA Animals, the march has now become a national sensation, with events held in over 30 cities across Ukraine – from Lviv and Kyiv to as far away as Mykolayiv and Severodonetsk. Leopolitan activists gathered in Rynok Square with pets and posters demanding increased responsibility for breeders and dog hunters to stop testing cosmetics on animals and to not use them for commercial and entertainment purposes. This year, the Verkhovna Rada tightened legislation banning animal cruelty. If an animal dies due to cruel treatment, the culprit now faces criminal liability, with imprisonment from six months to three years. If the crime is especially cruel, the punishment can be up to eight years of imprisonment.
МАРШ ЗА ПРАВА ТВАРИН 5 вересня львів’яни вийшли на Всеукраїнський марш за тварин – наймасштабнішу зоозахисну подію, яка об'єднала абсолютно різних людей навколо гуманістичних цінностей! Марш, ініційований UAnimals, став національною сенсацією, його заходи пройшли у більш ніж 30 містах по всій Україні – від Львова та Києва до Миколаєва та Сєвєродонецька, а також в Антарктиді, на станції "Академік Вернадський". Львівські активісти зібралися на площі Ринок з домашніми тваринами та плакатами з вимогою захистити тварин від жорстокості та заборонити цирки з тваринами, контактні зоопарки, дельфінарії, хутрові ферми та притравочні станції, зупинити діяльність живодерів-догхантерів та контролювати виконання чинних законів. Цього року Верховна Рада посилила законодавство, що забороняє жорстоке поводження з тваринами. Якщо тварина загине через жорстоке поводження, винуватцю загрожує кримінальна відповідальність, з позбавленням волі від 6 місяців до 3років. "HRYVNIA ART" EXHIBITION Ukrainian Independence Day on 24 August marked the official opening of the ‘Hryvnia ART’ exhibition at the Lviv Palace of Arts. The exhibition dedicated to Ukraine’s money features works by 88 leading artists from across the country. The exhibition featured unique art objects, as well as paintings, graphics, collages, and other installations. The evolution of the hryvnia and its design is identified with the development of contemporary Ukrainian art as money is a powerful modern economic development of the country and its culture. Representing artworks on money, participating artists tried to present their own understanding and vision of the development of modern art. The ‘Hryvnia ART’ tour started in Kyiv and will continue on to other cities in the country, culminating in an auction of the works at the end of the year.
ВИСТАВКА "ГРИВНЯ АРТ" У львівському Палаці Мистецтв до Дня незалежності України відбулося офіційне відкриття виставки "Гривня АРТ". В експозиції представлені роботи 88 провідних митців з усієї країни. Роботи виконані у техніках: живопис, графіка, колаж, асамбляж. Направлення арту на грошах давно має своїх прихильників по всьому світу та колекціонується. Еволюція гривні та її дизайну ототожнюється з розвитком українського сучасного мистецтва. Гроші – це потужний сучасний конгломерат економічного розвитку країни та її мистецтва. Своїм мистецтвом на грошах митці проекту намагаються донести до глядача мистецьке художнє розуміння та своє бачення розвитку сучасного арту на грошах. Виставка "Гривня АРТ" мандрівна, вона вже відбулась в Київі і далі буде подорожувати іншими містами України. Проєкт планується завершити в грудні, ймовірно аукціоном робіт.
LVIV ORCHESTRA FASHION: THE INTERSECTION OF FASHION AND MUSIC Renowned Leopolitan fashion designer Marta Wachholz presented her latest collection at !FESTRepublic’s Gastroli Hall on 8 September. Organised by Lviv Fashion Week and supported by the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, the show was accompanied by the lovely melodies of the INSO-Lviv Symphony Orchestra and vocals of Ulyana Horbachevska, a singer, director, and actress known for her research of ancient Ukrainian songs. Wachholz’s new collection combines the motifs of Hutsul hand-painted pottery with elements of aviation outfits. The inspiration for the collection lays in the motifs and colours of Kosovo ornaments and the work of Ukraine’s outstanding aircraft designer Ihor Sikorsky – creator of some of the world’s finest aircraft and helicopters between 1920–1960. The collection was crafted with patterns from authentic ceramic tiles made by masters from the village of Kosovo.
LVIV ORCHESTRA FASHION: НА ПЕРЕТИНІ МОДНОГО І МУЗИЧНОГО 8 вересня відбувся показ нової колекції бренду Marta Wachholz у супроводі симфонічного оркестру INSOLviv. Lviv Fashion Week вже вдруге організовує кроссекторальний проєкт Lviv Orchestra Fashion, незмінно за підтримки Українського культурного фонду. Цього разу музичне оформлення показу спільно з оркестром творила Уляна Горбачевська – співачка, акторка, режисерка, дослідниця автентичних давніх українських пісень та композиторка Марія Олійник. Нова арт-колекція Marta Wachholz поєднує мотиви гуцульської кераміки, з елементами авіаційного вбрання. Натхненням для колекції стали мотиви та кольори орнаментів Косова, а також роботи видатного українського авіаконструктора Ігоря Сікорського – творця одних із найкращих у світі літаків та гелікоптерів у період 1920–1950 років. Спеціально для колекції, було створено унікальний дизайн тканини з візерунком автентичних косівських керамічних кахлів.

X INTERNATIONAL FOLKLORE FESTIVAL "ETHNOVYR" For the 10th time streets of Lviv played host for the jolly, colorful and dynamic International Folklore Festival "Ethnovyr". The traditional parade of all participants in national costumes marched through the center of Lviv, gathering numerous fascinated spectators and drawing applause, and morphed smoothly to the first day’s concert. Spectacular courtyard of Potocki Palace has been chosen as a new location for this year’s event. As guest of honor this time came Philippe Beaussant, President of the International Council of Festivals of Folklore and Traditional Arts (CIOFF®) at UNESCO, who visited Ukraine for the first time. Ethnovyr was traditionally opened by foreign participants: the Turkish folk dance ensemble Kuzeyin Uşakları and the folk dance ensemble Tekstilac from Montenegro. After the performances of representatives of Ukraine featuring Folk children's and youth choreographic ensemble of folk dance "Polynychka", Exemplary vocal and choreographic ensemble "Veseli Cherevychky", Folk dance ensemble "Mriya", Exemplary dance ensemble "Kvity Ukrainy", Folk Art Ensemble of dance “Serpanok”, Exemplary Children's Dance Theater "Levenya", People's Dance Theater "Escada", Folk Amateur Dance Ensemble "Volynyanka", Exemplary Amateur Dance Ensemble "Volynyanochka", Exemplary Art Ensemble of Dance "Vesnyanka", Folk Art Ensemble of the People of Ukraine "Horytsvit” named after Zenon
Kolobych of LNMU named after Danylo Halytsky, National Academic Song and Dance Ensemble" Hutsulia" came to the stage. Festival’s second day showcased a powerful performance of the legendary G. Veryovka Ukrainian National Honoured Academic Folk Choir, which was accompanied by a live orchestra and dance group. The third, final, day of Ethnovyr began with the announcement that the World Congress and the CIOFF General Assembly in 2022 will take place in Lviv. The grand finale of the 10th jubilee "Ethnovyr" featured magnificent joint performance of Hutsul Arkan by all participants of the Festival. For the first time, within Festival’s frames was held Forum of Folklore Initiatives, which brought together influencers cultural landscape and created a new platform for constructive dialogue on topics relevant to each and everyone. As one of Forum’s topics came the role of folklore in the XXI century, work with intangible cultural heritage and overcoming stereotypes as well as creating a quality cultural product. The Etnovyr Festival was supported by the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, the Lviv City Council and under the auspices of the International Council of Folklore and Traditional Arts Festival Organizations (CIOFF®), an international non-governmental organization and official partner of UNESCO, accredited by UNESCO protection of intangible cultural heritage.

X МІЖНАРОДНИЙ ФЕСТИВАЛЬ ФОЛЬКЛОРУ "ЕТНОВИР" Вдесяте відшумів на львівських вулицях Міжнародний фестиваль фольклору "Етновир": яскравий, нестримний і веселий. Традиційний марш-парад всіх учасників в національних костюмах пройшов центром Львова, зібрав захоплених глядачів і овації, та плавно перетік в перший концертний день. Новою локацією для Фестивалю цього року обрали подвір’я Палацу Потоцьких. Почесним гостем фестивалю став Філіп Босан (Philippe Beaussant),президент Міжнародної Ради Організацій Фестивалів Фольклору і Традиційних Мистецтв (CIOFF®) при ЮНЕСКО, який вперше завітав до України. Традиційно відкривали "Етновир" закордонні учасники: турецький ансамбль народного танцю Kuzeyin Uşakları і ансамбль народного танцю Tekstilac з Чорногорії. Після виступів українських колективів (Народний дитячо-юнацький хореографічний ансамбль народного танцю "Полуничка", Зразковий вокально-хореографічний ансамбль "Веселі черевички", Народний ансамбль танцю "Мрія", Зразковий ансамбль танцю "Квіти України", Народний художній колектив ансамбль танцю "Серпанок", Зразковий дитячий театр танцю "Левеня" та Народний театр танцю "Ескада", Народний аматорський ансамбль танцю "Волинянка" та зразковий аматорський ансамбль танцю "Волиняночка", Зразковий художній колектив ансамбль танцю "Веснянка", Народнии художніи колектив України ансамбль народного танцю "Горицвіт"

Другого фестивального дня глядачі насолоджувалися потужним виступом легендарного Хору ім. Верьовки, якии виступав в супроводі живого оркестру і танцювальної групи. Третій, завершальний, день "Етновиру" розпочали з анонсу того, що Світовий Конгрес та Генеральна Асамблея CIOFF у 2022 році відбудеться у Львові. Фіналом Х ювілейного "Етновиру" стало спільне виконання гуцульського Аркану всіма учасниками Фестивалю. Вперше в рамках Фестивалю пройшов Форум фольклорних ініціатив, що об’єднав гравців культурної сфери і створив нову платформу для конструктивного діалогу на актуальні для кожного теми. Зокрема, про роль фольклору у ХХІ столітті, роботу з нематеріальною культурною спадщиною та про подолання стереотипів та створення якісного культурного продукту. DEOLIGARCHIZ ATION: MY TH OR RE ALIT Y? The Deoligarhization is an initiative, which is actively discussed in the public area. That is why the European Business Association within the Leopolis Jazz Fest dear to find the answer to that question: is it myth or reality? The discussion was conducted on June 27 at the marvelous Terassa of Rius Hotel. Liudmyla Buimister, People’s deputy, the Subcommittee on Competition Development and Equal Business Conditions Chair of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Economic Development, noted that relevant draft law version does not provide consequences for persons who will be included in the so-called oligarchs register, that is why separate registers will not help to solve the inequality problem.
Tomash Fiala, EВA President, Dragon Capital CEO, pointed out the importance of all laws reading that should be within this concept. After all this draft law looks like populism. Vladyslav Rashkovan, IMF Deputy Executive Director, said that he does not like the concept of sanctions against the oligarchs. After all, the question is not only to make a list of oligarchs but also what

the next step should be so that the oligarchic model does not prevail in Ukraine tomorrow. Dmytro Sennychenko, the State Property Fund Chairman, stressed that there are no simple and quick solutions, we all should do everything possible for the country to pass this transformation stage. Systemic reforms are what the country desperately needs. Oleksandr Danyliuk, the National Depository Supervisory Board Chairman, noted that the draft law philosophy itself is not correct. The declarations under the draft law are simply populism, which has nothing to do with the struggle against the oligarchs. According to Olexander, only a prosperous strong economy will help to establish equal game rules in the country and a win-win system. EBA EXPERT TALKS ДЕОЛІГАРХІЗАЦІЯ: МІФ ЧИ РЕА ЛЬНІСТЬ? Відповідь на це питання шукали учасники дискусії 27 червня, організованої Європейською Бізнес Асоціацією в рамках Leopolis Jazz Fest, обговорюючи ініціативу деолігархізації, що останнім часом активно обговорюється в публічному полі країни. Людмила Буймістер, Народний депутат, Голова підкомітету з питань розвитку конкуренції та рівних умов для бізнесу Комітету ВРУ з питань економічного розвитку, зазначила, що у такій редакції проєкт Закону не передбачає наслідку для осіб, які будуть внесені у так званий реєстр олігархів, а тому – окремі реєстри не допоможуть боротися із проблемою нерівності. Томаш Фіала, Президент ЕВА, СЕО Dragon Capital наголосив, що важливо прочитати всі закони, що мають бути в рамках цієї концепції. Адже лише даний один законопроєкт більше все ж поки виглядає як популізм. Владислав Рашкован, Заступник виконавчого директора МВФ, вказав, що йому особисто не надто подобається концепція санкцій проти олігархів. Адже питання полягає не лише в тому, щоб зробити список олігархів, а в тому, який наступний крок повинен бути, щоб олігархічна модель не панувала в Україні завтра. Дмитро Сенниченко, Голова Фонду державного майна, наголосив, що простих і швидких рішень не буває, ми всі повинні робити все можливе, щоб країна пройшла цей етап трансформації. А системні реформи – це те, що конче потрібно країні. Олександр Данилюк, Голова наглядової ради Національного Депозитарію, зазначив, що сама філософія законопроєкту не є правильною. Декларації, передбачені проєктом закону – це просто популізм, який не має нічого спільного із боротьбою із олігархами. На думку Олександра, лише процвітаюча сильна економіка допоможуть встановити рівні правила гри в країні та систему win-win. FINANCIAL LITERACY SCHOOL from the Western Ukrainian office, Freedom Finance Ukraine and CreditAgricol Bank! Within 2 months, participants had the opportunity to learn the basics of financial literacy! During 7 Modules of the Financial Literacy School, participants and speakers discussed the topics of personal finance, the importance of their management, the possibility of equity formation, and the benefits of electronic systems Visa and Mastrercard for premium card holders. School participants learned how to make purchases and payments with the card safely and not fall victim to fraud with their own finances. The speakers also covered the topics of credit cards, savings and investments and spoke about the mechanism of investment abroad. We are happy to know that participants of the Financial Literacy School obtained the necessary knowledge to understand their own finances and their management!

Natalia Tkachenko, Ernst & Young's Senior Consultant at People Advisory Services in Ukraine, shared EY's research on employee benefits. In particular, we discussed the following:

Serhiy Bohatskyi, Chief Service Officer of QFM catering, said that you can improve the comfort of the company by using facility management services, like cleaning services, catering and outsourced technical operation. This helps companies and their employees to focus on their core business.

• Covid-19 has significantly influenced the planning of remuneration to employees: 57% of employers have reduced or plan to reduce the budget for remuneration for 2021
Also, we listened to a presentation made by Oksana Abramenko, Lviv Consulting Group, on the review of wages based on a blitz survey of 29 manufacturing companies in various industries. In particular, it showed information about salaries, bonuses, allowances for skilled and unskilled workers. For example, 80% of surveyed companies plan to review or have already reviewed the average base/tariff grid, and the average rate of the rate hike is 1012%. Oksana Abramenko also singled out global labour market trends such as hybrid work model, continuing education, new corporate culture, accelerating digitalization, shortage of personnel in technology and IT.

Послухали презентацію Оксани Абраменко, Львівська консалтингова група, щодо огляду заробітної плати на основі проведеного бліц-опитування 29 виробничих компаній з різних галузей. Зокрема, поговорили про заробітні плати, премії, надбавки для кваліфікованих і некваліфікованих працівників. До прикладу, 80% опитаних компаній планують переглянути або вже переглянули середню базову/тарифну сітку, а середній відсоток підняття ставки становить 10-12%. Також Оксана Абраменко виокремила глобальні тенденції ринку праці, серед яких: гібридна модель роботи, безперервна освіта, нова корпоративна культура, прискорення цифровізації, дефіцит кадрів у технологічній сфері та ІТ.

DIGITAL NOMADS Free movement around the world and remote work are the mainstream of our time. Before the pandemic, working outside the office seemed to be the fate of weirdos and misanthropes. 2020 taught auditors, designers, financial consultants and teachers how to work remotely and make money from hybrid work to the most enterprising local communities. Digital Nomads are a new format for tourists. Ukraine certainly shouldn't lose them. WHY D O E S T H E C O U NTRY NEE D LE ISU R E T R AV E L E R S? Combining business and leisure has become a way of life for many freelancers. According to a Microsoft study, 46% of employees plan to move to remote work. They plan to live by their own rules, away from their usual routes, climate and social contacts and to spend their money on housing, food and entertainment. Despite crises and pandemics, the economy of a particular region is launched: • New jobs appear to serve Digital Nomads. • Owners of apart-hotels, apartments and bungalows earn money. • Owners of restaurants, cafes, pubs, supermarkets and delivery services are calculating their profits. • Producers of local products are increasing their turnover. • Car and scooter rentals are renewing their fleets. • Local travel agencies are developing new routes.
WHER E F R E E L AN C ERS L I V E W E L L A special visa regime for freelancers was introduced by such countries as Dubai, Croatia, Barbados, Georgia, Estonia, Germany, Canada, Portugal, Netherlands, Bermuda, etc. The state preferences include residence permits for one to three

years, automatic renewal of residence permits, tax benefits, ease of opening bank accounts in local banks and the placement of children in schools and kindergartens. Local projects for Digital Nomads are being developed. At the initiative of territorial communities, Co-living & Co-Working spaces are being created for freelancers: • Discounts on accommodation in local guest houses, hotels and apartments from 30 to 40% for stays of 28 to 30 days or more. • Free access or substantial discounts on a subscription to a coworking space with the necessary furniture, communications and office equipment. • Joint events, training courses, informal communication of the Digital Nomads community. • Introduction to local culture as well as natural and historical sites on preferential terms. Campuses for freelancers have long operated in Thailand, India and Bali. Villages for Digital Nomads have been organized in Madeira and northern Portugal. There are special spaces for freelancers in America, Canada and EU countries.

LVIV AT TOKYO 2020 TOP 10 MOMENTS TO REMEMBER

he world’s best athletes gathered this summer in Japan for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and athletes
from Lviv shone on sports’ biggest stage. Six athletes return to the Western Ukrainian capital with shiny Olympic medals, while
others were agonisingly close to brining back more hardware. Three athletes from three different sports won Olympic medals (out of Ukraine’s 19 total), while another three athletes won four Paralympic medals. All in all, Lviv athletes ended up winning Olympic and Paralympic medals in Athletics, Cycling, Fencing, Karate, Table Tennis, and Wrestling. Congrats to our Olympic heroes on your incredible, once-in-a-lifetime performances!
#10 – Dzoba-Balyan Falls to Paralympic Champion Nemesis in Para Archery It was the rematch she was waiting for on Tokyo’s sunny Yumenoshima Park, but the result ended up the same for No. 11-ranked Roksolana Dzoba-Balyan. The world championship silver medalist made it back to the Para Archer quarterfinal, only to face the woman who knocked her out at Rio 2016 at the same stage – China’s Wu Chunyan. It was déjà vu for Dzoba-Balyan, as she narrowly fell to the eventual Paralympic champion.
#9 – Marchenko Matches Olympic Personal Best in Archery It wasn’t quite the result that she was looking for, but Veronika Marchenko had Ukrainian sports fans on the edges of their seats for awhile in Archery qualification. Briefly leading, the former world and European champ was in the Top 5 through more than half of qualification, before slipping back to qualify 35th. That would cost her later as, after winning her Round of 64 match, she fell to South Korea’s No. 3-ranked Kang Chae-Young. She also represented Ukraine at the women’s team and mixed team events.

#7 – Heartbreak for Korostylov on the Shooting Range At every Olympic Games there are images of those that succeed and those that fall just short, and it was heartbreak for our young Pavlo Korostylov. The world champion shooter fell just short of adding an Olympic medal to his 2014 Youth Olympic gold. Sitting in second place with one shot to make the medals, Korostylov fell out of the medals with a devastating last shot miss. Our hearts go out to our young champ, who will have to wait for Paris 2024 for his first Olympic medal.
#6 – Pavlyk Jumps His Way Into Paralympic History Sitting in fourth place with just one chance left to claim his 10th Paralympic medal, Roman Pavlyk took a deep breath. The world record holder in the F36 classification hurtled himself down the track and launched himself 5.63m for bronze – the fourth straight Paralympics he’s medaled in. A thrilling end to a wonderful competition!

Two of Ukraine’s finest gymnasts wowed viewers with their sparkling and memorable routines at Japan’s Ariake Gymnastics Centre. 2018 Youth Olympics silver medalist Khrystyna Pohranychna qualified for the all-around
Leave it to world champion Nataliia Morkvych to pull Lviv’s fencers out of the doldrums. Morkvych won her first Paralympic medal by winning silver in the women’s foil – category A event. It helped raise the spirits
of teammates Anton Datsko and Andrii Demchuk, who had just missed out on medals. Demchuk’s loss in the men’s sabre – category A particularly stung. Up 13–7 in the bronze medal match, the 2016 Paralympic champion was stunned by a stirring comeback to fall 15–14.
#4 – Cherkasova Claims First Olympic Medal It was Alla Cherkasova’s moment in the (rising) sun in Japan for 2018 world champion Alla Cherkasova. After falling to Olympic champion Tamyra Mensah in the semi-final, Cherkasova put on a clinic to pin hometown favourite Sara Dosho to capture bronze – her first Olympic medal. It was the first medal for a Lviv athlete at Tokyo 2020 and a thrilling moment for the entire Ukrainian team, which also included Oksana Livach and Tetyana Kit.
#3 – Double Silver for Didukh in Para Table Tennis After capturing gold in the team event at Rio 2016, there was just one thing left to accomplish for Paralympic champion Viktor Didukh – improve on his 5th place individual finish in Brazil. He did just that in Tokyo – twice! The table tennis legend captured silver in the individual – class 8 event with a thrilling semi-final win before anchoring the Ukrainian team to a silver in the team event.
#2 – Horuna Wins Bronze in Karate’s Only Olympic Appearance Few athletes faced more pressure in Tokyo that the karatekas. With the sport left off the Paris 2024 programme,
this was the last – and maybe only – chance they had to win an Olympic medal. Adding to that pressure was that our Stanislav Horuna was the reigning World Games champion. After navigating out of a tricky qualification group, the hometown hero fell to Olympic champion Luigi Busa in the semi-final. Still, an Olympic medal in his only chance saw Horuna sporting his famous huge grin!
#1 – Silver for Starikova for Lviv’s Top Performance! Just hours before the cauldron went out at Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium, Lviv’s Olena Starikova was making magic at the velodrome near Mt. Fuji. Just days after just missing out on a medal with a dermoralising fourth place finish in the Keirin, Starikova regrouped and put together perhaps the best performance of any Lviv athlete at Tokyo 2020. “Watch me on Sunday”, she told Lviv Today as her competitors were receiving their medals. “I’m ready.” The blistering speedster showed just what she meant by knocking off opponent after opponent on her way to the Sprint final. While she fell to Olympic champion Kelsey Mitchell by a combined 0.125 seconds over two races (!), she won our hearts and provided Leopolitan sporting fans with one of the best memories of the summer.
