CHINESE NEW YEAR IN UKRAINE January 30 – February 2, City Centre & Rynok Square) If you haven’t celebrated enough over the holiday season, then Lviv is the place to be to ring in the traditional Chinese New Year from January 30 – February 2. The Chinese New Year Festival is organized by the international civil society organization “’Lanhua’ Cultural-Research Centre of Ukraine and China”. The festival is set to feature traditional and contemporary Chinese cultural activities, festivities, dances, singing, arts & crafts, laser shows, and much more! One particular highlight of the celebration will be the electric lit horse – the symbol of this year’s Chinese New Year. The illuminated symbol will be placed in Rynok Square, giving everyone the possibility to mark the occasion with pictures. Visitors will also be able to enjoy delicious and exotic Chinese cuisine at the Oriental fair, prepared especially for you by Chinese cooks. Цей масовий захід організований Міжнародною громадською організацією «Культурно-дослідницький центр України та Китаю «Ланьхуа» і включатиме давні й сучасні китайські традиції, танці, пісні, виставки декоративно-прикладного мистецтва, лазерне шоу і багато іншого. Оскільки наступний рік за східним календарем – це рік коня – основною темою святкувань будуть коні та все, з ними пов’язане. Підсвічена фігура коня буде розміщена на площі Ринок, де кожен охочий зможе сфотографуватися на згадку. Також працюватиме святковий ярмарок, на якому, зокрема, буде представлена китайська кухня, з її оригінальними вишуканими стравами, які приготують найкращі китайські кухарі. Maxim Averin, a notable name in Russian film and one of the leading actors at Moscow’s A. Raikin “Satyricon” theatre, brings his one-man show “It all begins with love…” to Lviv’s exquisite Opera and Ballet Theatre on February 15th. This unique show showcases the remarkable talent of this skilled artist. This is no mere concert or creative encounter; it is a solo effort, a full theatrical performance that is both sophisticates as well as artistic. It is a wonderful mosaic of music, poetry, and prose accompanied by spectacular sound and studio light. The show takes its title – “Everything begins with love…” – from a Robert Rozhdestvensky poem that is featured in the program along with the poetry and prose of D. Samoylov, A.Vertinsky, B.Pasternak, V. Mayakovsky and V. Vysotsky. Maxim Averin is one of those artists that opens his heart and soul in his dialogue with the audience. Alexandr Rosenbaum, a well-known Soviet and Russian bard that hails from Saint Petersburg, is bringing his “Once at Ligovka” concert programme to Lviv on December 16th. Likely best known as an performer of the ‘blatnaya pesnya’ (criminal song) genre, Rosenbaum graduated from the Pavlov Medical School in 1974 and worked in the medical field for four years. His musical education consists of piano and choreography courses at a music school. In 1968, while still a medical student, Rosenbaum began writing the songs for which he became famous. Maybe his most famous melodies are the ones about his hometown of Leningrad, as well as ballads about the Soviet-Afghan War, Cossacks, and the Jewish Mafia in Odessa. Songs such as “Gop-Stop”, a comedy about two gangsters executing an unfaithful lover and “Vals-Boston” (The Boston Waltz), are popular across Russian Social groups and generations. Відомий радянський і російський бард Олександр Розенбаум із Санкт -Петербурга привезе до Львова нову концертну програму «Однажды на Лиговке». О. Розенбаум закінчив ленінградський Перший медичний інститут в 1974 році і працював на «швидкій допомозі» протягом чотирьох років. Закінчив музичну школу по класу фортепіано, самостійно навчився грати на гітарі, пізніше закінчив вечірнє музичне училище по класу аранжування, займався у вечірньому джазовому училищі Палацу культури ім. С. М. Кірова. Власні пісні для «капусників», студентських спектаклів та вокальноінструментальних ансамблів почав писати у 1968 році, будучи студентом. Серед його найвідоміших – пісні про Ленінград, афганську війну, казаків та єврейську мафію в Одесі. Такі пісні як «Гоп-стоп» і «Вальс-бостон» користуються популярністю по всій Росії серед усіх соціальних груп і поколінь. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT EUROMAIDAN The EuroMaidan – a wave of large public demonstrations and civil unrest in Ukraine – began in late November in response to the government’s decision to abandon closer European integration. The scope of the protests has since evolved, with many calling for the resignation of President Yanukovych and his government. The movement particularly grew in both size and militancy following the violent crackdown of protesters on the night of November 30th. The escalating number of protesters, as well as the large number of Berkut riot police, has led to a tense atmosphere in the capital. Weekend protests in Kyiv have drawn some 500,000 – 1,000,000 people despite the heavy police presence, regular sub-zero temperatures, and snow. The protests have been felt significantly in Lviv as Prospect Svoboda was overrun by Ukrainian and EU-flag waving supporters, a general strike was called in early December, and university classes have been interrupted as thousands of Leopolitan youth travelled to Kyiv in support of the cause. While the protests have more recently drawn smaller numbers than the record crowds of early December, over 100,000 Ukrainians rang in New Year at the EuroMaidan in Kyiv with a stirring rendition of Ukraine’s anthem “Ukraine Has Not Perished Yet”. The EuroMaidan has not only captivated Ukrainians in late 2013, but has also drawn a number of influential foreign politicians to the country and has dominated foreign news cycles, making it the easy choice as Lviv Today’s Most Memorable Moment of 2013.
ПОДІЯ, ЩО НАЙБІЛЬШ ЗАПАМ’ЯТАЛАСЬ ЄВРОМАЙДАН Хвиля громадських протестів в Україні почалися наприкінці листопада у відповідь на рішення уряду відмовитися від європейської інтеграції та зони вільної торгівлі з ЄС. Вимоги протестувальників відтоді змінились, включно з відставкою президента Януковича і його уряду. Рух протесту особливо виріс після силового розгону протестувальників у ніч на 30 листопада. На вулицях Києва зросло число протестуючих, а також кількість бійців спецпідрозділу «Беркут», що призвело до напруженої обстановки в столиці. В протестах на вихідних в Києві зібралось від 500 000 до 1 000 000 людей незважаючи на присутність міліції, мінусові температури і рясний сніг. На протест у Львові також вийшли тисячі громадян під прапорами України та ЄС, студенти розпочали страйк на початку грудня, і тисячі львів’ян поїхали до Києва на підтримку загальної справи. Хоча протести під кінець грудня стали не такими масовими, понад 100 тисяч українців вийшли зустрічати Новий рік на Євромайдан в Києві, де урочисто заспівали державний гімн "Ще не вмерла Україна". Події на Євромайдані також привернули увагу світової громадськості і засобів масової інформації та низку впливових зарубіжних політиків, які не побоялись особисто висловити підтримку українському народу в його прагненні до кращого, достойного життя.

CELEBRITY GUEST OF THE YEAR HRH PRINCE MICHAEL OF KENT Lviv welcomed His Royal Highness (HRH) Prince Michael of Kent along with the United Kingdom’s “Air Squadron” flying club as part of the military history project “Club of Antique Aircrafts” from June 30th – July 7th, 2013. During his stay, HRH Prince Michael met with the city officials and enjoyed a sightseeing tour of the city center where he and other members of his delegation visited the St. Peter & Paul Church of the Jesuit Order and lit candles in remembrance of all those killed in battle. During his stay, HRH Prince Michael of Kent was awarded the Order of Danylo Halytsky by city officials, which he accepted in accordance with army tradition by placing it in a vodka-filled glass.

Під час свого перебування, принц Майкл зустрівся з високопосадовцями міста та побував на оглядовій екскурсії в центрі міста, разом з членами делегації відвідав гарнізонний собор св. Петра і Павла і запалив свічки в пам'ять про всіх загиблих в боях. Увечері принц Майкл побував у міському театрі опери та балету на виставі "Карміна Бурана" Карла Орффа. Під час свого перебування у Львові Його Королівська Високість принц Майкл Кентський отримав від міської влади орден Данила Галицького, який він прийняв за давньою армійською традицією.

From ethno-rock queen to European pop princess and from activist to politician to activist again, Lviv’s own Ruslana is never too far from the limelight. But it was her role in the EuroMaidan protests that brought her back to the fore of every Ukrainian’s mind in 2013. The singer was already a major figure on the EuroMaidan stage when she played a key role in galvanizing the protesters during a Berkut night attack on December 11th. Since then, the Eurovision 2004 winner has been a regular figure on the EuroMaidan stage, singing and energizing the crowds for up to 10 hours during the overnight shifts. In many ways, she has come to represent the interests of the protesters: pro-EU, anti-political, and certainly anti-Berkut. It was no surprise when on New Year’s she led over 100,000 Ukrainians in a chorus of Ukraine’s national anthem in an attempt to set the Guinness Record for most people singing an anthem. She followed the hymn, as always, with an upbeat concert – her voice hoarse from the many nightly performances she’d already played – featuring her classic, ethno-infused rock anthems such as “Znaju Ja” (I Know) and “Dykі Tantsi” (Wild Dances). Of course, her mostly-deserved, unofficial title as the “Soul of the EuroMaidan” isn’t the only reason why the editorial staff at Lviv Today selected Ruslana as Leopolitan of the Year 2013. The honoured resident of Lviv continues to work tirelessly for several charities, both as the Goodwill Ambassador of Ukraine for UNICEF, as well as by playing charity concerts for children’s and environmental organizations. Her anti-human trafficking anthem “Not for Sale” continues to be the face of an issue that is no less prevalent in Ukraine today than when the song was recorded in 2008. However, it is her willingness to share the everyday experiences of the protesters, even joining hand-in-hand with frontline protesters that stand face-to-face with the helmeted Berkut riot police, which has earned her nicknames such as “Ukraine’s Joan of Arc” and “Kyiv’s Queen of the Night” by European media outlets. For using her celebrity to highlight the trials and tribulations that so many of Lviv’s youth have faced since the protests began, Ruslana Lyzhychko is Lviv Today’s 2013 Leopolitan of the Year.

Потім вона постійно була на сцені, вночі щогодини співала зі всіма гімн України. На Новий рік, зокрема завдяки її енергії, на майдані зібрались понад 100 000 українців в одному великому хорі. Вона співала свої пісні – і «Дикі танці», і «Знаю я», і багато інших, ризикуючи втратити голос, співаючи на морозі. Вона була душею Майдану, вона запалювала і надихала, вона підтримувала і зігрівала. Руслана вже має титули «Людина року-96» у номінації «Зірка естради», а також «Співачка року-96». Маючи титул почесного громадянина Львова, Руслана продовжує невпинно працювати в різних благодійних організаціях, вона є послом доброї волі в ЮНІСЕФ від України, виступає з благодійними концертами для дітей та екологічних організацій. Її громадянська позиція, висловлена у відеоролику проти торгівлі людьми під назвою "Не для продажу", актуальна сьогодні в Україні не менш, ніж коли він був створений у 2008 році. Вона завжди готова розділити повсякденні переживання учасників акції, навіть стати пліч-опліч у перших рядах проти шоломів «Беркута». Європейські ЗМІ часом називають її "Українська Жанна Д’Арк" і "Київська Королева Ночі". Користуючись своєю популярністю, вона очолила протест, надихнула молодь не відступати перед усіма випробуваннями і редакція беззаперечно визнає Руслану Лижичко людиною 2013 року

ANNIVERSARY OF THE YEAR FC KARPATY LVIV CELEBRATES 50 YEARS! Western Ukraine’s leading football club, and one of the most popular football teams in Ukraine, Lviv’s own FC Karpaty celebrates 50 years since the club’s foundation on January 18th. From humble beginnings in the Soviet Second League to the pinnacle of Soviet football in 1969 to more recent deep runs in the Ukrainian Cup, the Green Lions have been giving Leopolitan football fans a reason to cheer for a half century. It all started back in 1963 when the Lviv city administration grew tired of CSKA Moscow raiding the SKA Lviv team of players and decided to create an independent civilian team. Settling on the name ‘Karpaty’, as at the time they represented Western Ukraine in football stadiums across the Soviet Union, the team saw early success and by the end of the 1960s, was one of the premiere teams in the Soviet First League. Maybe the greatest moment in Karpaty history happened in 1969 when the club defeated a strong SKA Rostov-on-Don squad 2-1 to become the first (and only) First League team to capture the USSR Cup. The team continued to improve and by 1971 the green and white had won promotion to the Soviet Top League. The high-water mark of the club came in 1976 when the club finished 4th in the entire Soviet Union. Soon after, though, the team fell on hard times. The next season the team was relegated to the First League and by 1982 the team was forced to merge with SKA Lviv to become SKA Karpaty Lviv until 1989. After Ukrainian independence, FC Karpaty was placed the Ukrainian Premiere League and saw modest successes. The club twice finished runner-up in the Ukrainian Cup and took bronze in the league in 1998. More hard times followed as the club was relegated to the First League for a couple of seasons in the mid-2000s. Our boys have been more competitive recently having made the semi-finals of the Ukrainian Cup in 2012 while qualifying for the group stages of the Europa League the same year. FC Karpaty currently sits in 11th place with a 4-7-6 record.
ЮВІЛЕЙ РОКУ 50 -РІЧЧЯ ФК КАРПАТИ ЛЬВІВ Провідний футбольний клуб Західної України, і один з найпопулярніших в Україні, львівські «Карпати» 18-го січня святкують 50 років з дня заснування клубу. Львів’яни скромно стартували в 1963 році у другій лізі чемпіонату СРСР, щоб через 6 років стати чемпіонами країни. Відтоді зелено-білі виступали на своєму полі і в гостях, постійно радуючи своїх вболівальників цікавою грою. В 60-х роках минулого століття у Львові була одна футбольна команда – СКА Львів, гравців з якої постійно забирали до ЦСКА в Москву. У Львові було вирішено створити свій цивільний футбольний клуб і назвати його «Карпати». Ідея виявилась вдалою, у Львові було кому грати у футбол, як належить, і команда швидко прогресувала в матчах чемпіонату України й Союзу. Найбільшим досягненням в історії «Карпат» було здобуття кубку СРСР 1969 року, коли клуб переміг СКА Ростов-на-Дону з рахунком 2:1. Команда продовжує вдосконалювати свою майстерність, і у 1971 році виходить у вищу лігу. Найвищим досягненням клубу в чемпіонаті СРСР 1976 року стало 4 місце. Незабаром після цього, однак, для команди настали важкі часи. У наступному сезоні команда повернулась у першу лігу, а у 1982 році команда була змушена злитися зі СКА Львів – самостійними «Карпати» знову стали аж у 1989 році. Після проголошення незалежності України ФК Карпати увійшов до української прем'єр-ліги, де робив скромні успіхи. Клуб двічі зайняв друге місце в Кубку України і взяв бронзу в лізі 1998 року. Ситуація не покращилась, коли клуб перевели у першу лігу протягом декількох сезонів у середині 2000-х. В останні роки, завдяки, не в останню чергу, підтримці фан-клубу «Карпат» наші хлопці були більш конкурентоспроможними, вийшовши в півфінал Кубка України в 2012 році, закваліфікувавшись у груповому етапі Ліги Європи того ж року. Сьогодні ФК Карпати займає 11 сходинку в турнірній таблиці з результатом 4-7-6.

World famous jazz musicians once again flocked to the bohemian city of Lviv for ‘Alfa Jazz Fest’. This international music festival has quickly become one of the most interesting and important open-air jazz festivals in all of Eastern Europe. Leopolitan jazz fans and guests of the city were treated to world class jazz performances on three stages throughout the city: Rynok Square, Potocky Palace Courtyard, and the Bohdan Khmelnytsky Park of Culture and Leisure. This years Eddie Rosner’s Alfa Jazz Fest Award received American bassist Charlie Haden. The headliners of this amazing festival included: the American Dirty Dozen Brass Band; Israeli bassist Avishai Cohen; German trumpeter, singer, composer, arranger, and producer Till Brönner, American musician Charlie Haden with Quartet West; American vocalist and conductor Bobby McFerrin; American jazz fusionist, Latin guitarist, composer, and record producer Al Di Meola of Italy; and many others. CONCERT OF THE YEAR OKEAN ELZY Superstar rock group and Ukrainian icons, Lviv’s own Okean Elzy, returned for their first concert in over three years in their home city on June 1st at a rocking Arena Lviv. Over 30,000 fans – the largest crowd the group had ever performed for – showed up to see Okean Elzy perform during their only stop in Lviv on their Ukrainian tour in support of their new album “Zemlya” (Earth). The band played for what seemed an eternity; they exhausted their entire playlist from their new album, and managed to play nearly every one of their most treasured classics. In the end, the concert ran for over three hours and didn’t end until well past midnight. Fans from any price category walked away knowing both that they got their money’s worth, but also that they were part of a truly special event experience. If you missed this larger-than-life concert in 2013, make sure not to miss their 20th Anniversary Reunion concert in Lviv on May 31st at Arena Lviv.

TOURIST ATTRACTION TRADITIONAL OF THE YEAR REVIVAL OF THE YEAR “LVIV NIGHTS” Designed to showcase that Lviv’s cultural life doesn’t end when the sun goes down, “Lviv Nights” have quickly gained popularity and recognition as perhaps the city’s most anticipated tourist attraction. It was no surprise that this year’s November festival, where Lviv’s museums keep their doors open to the public at night, turned out even more interesting and exciting than before. The event featured theatrical fire shows in the Italian Courtyard, an intriguing night tour of the city’s underground, a spooky excursion through Lviv’s famed Lychakiv cemetery, several workshops on medieval dances, and battle reenactments at Lviv’s “Arsenal” museum. A special opportunity was given to a few lucky “Lviv Nights” to climb the clock tower at City Hall to enjoy the night view of our ancient city. Let’s see what they have in store for 2014.
MURAL PAINTINGS AT ST. GEORGE’S CHURCH IN DROHOBYCH Dating from ca. 1500, St. George’s Church in Drohobych is one of the oldest and best preserved wooden churches in all of Western Ukraine. In fact, this timber church is one of 16 other sacral buildings in Ukraine and Poland that in August of last year was recognized by UNESCO as being worthy of protection by their World Heritage List. This is why Lviv Today recognizes the importance of the U.S. Ambassador Grants Program’s decision to financially support the “Preservation and Restoration of Murals” project at St. George’s Church in Drohobych as evidenced by U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey Payette’s visit to the site on September 2nd to sign the agreement.

Акція "Ніч у Львові" швидко завоювала популярність і визнання і стала однією з найбільш очікуваних туристичних подій в місті. Багато музеїв, галерей, ресторанів і кафе, двері яких не зачинялись у ці дні допізна, пропонували відвідувачам різноманітну культурну програму. Можна було полюбуватись вогняним шоу в італійському дворику, пройтись міськими підземеллями, чи відвідати Личаківський цвинтар, відвідати майстер-клас з середньовічних танців або спостерігати за лицарськими поєдинками в музеї "Арсенал". Також можна було пройтись нічними коридорами Ратуші і піднятися на вежу з годинником, щоб насолодитися нічним видом нашого старовинного міста. «Ночі у Львові» 2014 року обіцяють бути ще цікавішими!

Церква св. Юрія в Дрогобичі, що датується прибл. 1500 р., є однією з найстаріших і найкраще збережених дерев'яних церков у всій Західній Україні. Ця дерев’яна церква є однією з 16 церковних будівель в Україні та Польщі, які в серпні минулого року були внесені ЮНЕСКО у Список всесвітньої спадщини. Саме тому редакція визнає важливість надання гранту для фінансової підтримки проекту збереження та відновлення розписів у церкві святого Юрія в Дрогобичі послом США Джеффрі Пайєтом, який особисто відвідав Дрогобич 2 вересня і підписав угоду з представниками міської влади і музею.

MONUMENT OF THE YEAR KULCHYTSKY COFFEE HERO Lviv’s newest monument, that of Yuriy Kulchytsky, a Galician merchant, spy, diplomat, soldier, and hero to the people of Vienna for his actions during the Battle of Vienna in 1683, was unveiled in Lviv’s Danylo Halytsky Square on Oct. 22. It was also in 1683 that Kulchytsky opened his first café in Vienna, the Hof zur Blauen Flasche (House Under the Blue Bottle), using beans left behind by the retreating Ottoman Turks. It didn’t take long for his café to become one of the most popular places in the entire city. Kulchytsky always served his mortar-ground brew wearing Turkish attire, which added to the place’s popularity. Kulchytsky, who also popularized coffee in Austria, innovated the idea of serving coffee with milk, a manner which was then foreign to the Turks. To this day he remains a popular folk hero and patron to all Viennese café owners despite his café being closed soon after his death in February 1694.In addition to Lviv’s new monument, Kulchytsky is even immortalized with a statue on Vienna’s Favoritenstraße St. Now coffee lovers in both cities can pay tribute to the man who taught Europe to drink coffee.
ПАМ'ЯТНИК РОКУ ЮРІЮ КУЛЬЧИЦЬКОМУ І КАВІ Найновіший пам'ятник у Львові – Юрію Кульчицькому, купцеві, дипломатові і вояку – герою битви під Віднем 1683 року, був відкритий у сквері навпроти лялькового театру 22 жовтня. Після перемоги об’єднаних європейських армій над турками в тому ж 1683 році Кульчицький відкрив свою першу кав’ярню у Відні, яку назвав Hof zur Blauen Flasche (Будинок під синьою пляшкою), в якій став подавати незнаний досі напій, приготований з трофейних зернят кави. Дуже швидко його заклад став надзвичайно популярним у всьому місті. Кульчицький особисто обслуговував клієнтів, переодягнувшись за турка, а також привчив віденців пити каву з молоком, чи вершками, і подавав до кави печиво у формі півмісяця. Хоча його власна кав’ярня проіснувала відносно недовго (Кульчицький помер 1694 року), він донині залишається популярним народним героєм і покровителем всіх віденських кафе. У Відні на вул. Now, more than ever, Leopolitans are using pedal power to get around our ancient city and identify cycling as part of their everyday lifestyle. This emerging Leopolitan trend was recognized early by the City of Lviv and beginning from 2011, they started building new cycling routes as part of a comprehensive cycling development program. According to the plans, the city will see nearly 260 km of new cycling infrastructure by 2019. There are no arguments concerning the positive aspects of cycling – both environmental and health-related. Cyclists promote a healthy lifestyle using a sustainable and ecologically sound form of transportation. This healthy trend seems to be taking our city by storm, with a number of events directly aimed at the cycling crowd. For example, the Rover Film Festival at the end of August reinforced the positive image of cyclists by celebrating cycling in its myriad forms by showing open-air screenings of some fine cinema. The festival especially attracted the young, trendsetting, citydwelling crowd that love and identify with film, art, music, and sports. Cyclists of the city also found a particularly ‘Leopolitan’ way to celebrate European Mobility Week during September 16–22. While the week is designed to promote cycling as a modern, clean, sustainable, and truly European mode of transport in Lviv, artistic Leopolitans staged the one-of-akind “Velomoda” fashion show – a fashion event that showcased casual cycling outfits created by talented, young Leopolitan designers. Don’t be surprised to see this trend continue to grow in 2014.

Ця нова тенденція була визнана і львівською владою, яка почала з 2011 року прокладати нові велосипедні доріжки в різних районах міста. Згідно з планами, в місті прокладуть майже 260 км велодоріжок до 2019 року. Пересування велосипедом по місту має багато позитивних аспектів – як для навколишнього середовища, так і для здоров'я. Велосипедисти пропагують здоровий спосіб життя за допомогою цього екологічно чистого виду транспорту. І ця здорова тенденція поширюється в місті низкою масових заходів. Наприклад, кінофестиваль «Ровер», що пройшов у кінці серпня, багатьма показами фільмів на відкритих майданчиках був покликаний створювати позитивний імідж велосипедистів. Фестиваль користувався особливою популярністю серед активної молоді, яка любить кіно, мистецтво, музику і спорт. У Львові також було відмічено Європейський тиждень мобільності 16–22 вересня, під час якого відбувся показ шоу «Веломода». На ньому були продемонстровані моделі одягу для велопрогулянок у різних стилях, створені талановитими молодими львівськими дизайнерами. Тож, мабуть, не буде дивно, якщо ця тенденція зростатиме і в 2014 році.

While the City of Lviv is known for many things – its cosmopolitan architecture, its world-class coffee houses, its delicious chocolate, and its picturesque Opera & Ballet Theatre – it is difficult to imagine the city without its charming trams. One of the city’s great symbols, the aging fleet was bolstered in 2013 by the acquisition of the Elektrotrans modern low-floor tram. From its humble beginnings 130 years ago with its Austro-Hungarian horse-drawn carriages to the modernization of its electric cars during the Polish Republic; from withstanding the armed foreign invasions in the Second World War to its current, modern European low-floor carriages, Lviv trams have long inspired Leopolitan lovers and artists. Today the Lviv tram infrastructure consists of almost 220 carriages that run on 9 lines across 75 kilometres of track all around the city. The newest addition to Lviv’s long tram history is the Elektrotrans, which started running on Route 10 in August. The new tram carries 250 passengers, cost nearly $13 million USD, is 80% comprised of domestic components, and is without equal in the CIS. The introduction of the Elektrotrans in Lviv and across Ukraine will allow for a 40% reduction in energy consumption, which will in turn allow more funds to be used for the further modernization of public transport. We hope to see more of these fine carriages on Lviv’s streets in 2014.

Електричний трамвай у Львові функціонує з 1894 року – один з найперших у Європі –а в 2013 році по рейках рушив сучасний низькопідлоговий трамвай місцевого виробництва. Львівські трамваї традиційно надихали поетів і художників. Сьогодні в трамвайному парку міста – майже 220 вагонів, які працюють на 9 маршрутах протяжністю 75 км по всьому місту. Перший новий вагон вийшов на маршрут № 10 у серпні. Новий трамвай, що вміщає 250 пасажирів, коштує майже 13 млн. доларів, на 80% складається з вітчизняних комплектуючих і не має собі рівних у СНД. Використання таких трамваїв у Львові і по всій Україні дозволить скоротити на 40% споживання електроенергії, що в свою чергу дозволить більше коштів використовувати для подальшої модернізації громадського транспорту. Сподіваємося, що в новому 2014 році на вулицях міста можна буде побачити більше цих красивих, зручних, економних засобів пересування.

It was no mere coincidence – it must have been divine intent – when OK’s modeling director met Olena Tretyakova while shopping at one of Lviv’s many boutiques. From first glance it was clear that this 13-yearold girl had the natural grace and talent to become one of Lviv’s top models. Today, the 18-year-old Tretyakova is one of the stars of the modeling world; she represents the spirit of OK’s models – she’s cheerful, ambitious, industrious, and has a spectacular zest for life. With all of the tremendous experience she has gained modeling in Ukraine and abroad, this rising star has all the things necessary to look forward to a glamorous career in modeling. This young girl manages to keep many balls in the air: she studies psychology at Lviv National University, she works, and she travels a lot – and that’s what makes her the pride and joy of OK’s models and Lviv Today’s Top Female Model of 2013.

CHRISTMAS SEASON The festive Christmas and New Year season was full of bright and merry events all around town that offered visitors plenty of places to celebrate with interesting activities and events, including the traditional Christmas Fair in the city centre, as well as singing, sweets, hot wine, honey, gifts, carols, and much fun in a warm holiday atmosphere. This year’s celebrations were highlighted by the annual “The Blaze of the Christmas Star” parade, “The Great Carol” festival, and Lviv’s most anticipated holiday event – the annual “Pampukh’s Holiday”. At this event Leopolitans and guests of the city were also having the opportunity to enjoy several concerts and entertaining contests with some memorable prizes.

The seventh traditional Christmas and New Year joint exhibition was held at the “Green Sofa” art gallery over the holiday season. The event brought together 48 artists from Lviv, Uzhgorod, Chernigiv, and even London! The exhibition featured paintings, graphical works, ceramics, stained glass, textile, icons of various genres created by experienced artists as well as talented newcomers of Leopolitan artistic circles.

A festive ceremony celebrating the opening of the new Polish Cultural Centre was held at the L. Ukrainka Theatre on December 16th in Lviv. The event, which saw the Federation of Polish Organizations in Ukraine receive a symbolic key to the new Polish Cultural Centre, was attended by such notable dignitaries as Poland’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Mr. HenrykLitwin, MFA Undersecretary of Poland KatarzynaPełczyńskaNałęcz, Mayor of LvivAndriySadovyi,Lieutenant General PavloTkachuk,Director of Lviv Academy of Land Forces, andother officials. The German General Director of TOV KLINGSPOR Roland Kaschny is opening the festivities
It has become a good tradition over the last 3 years that Roland Kaschny, the German General Director of KLINGSPOR TOV, the leading European company in Abrasives Technology, having a newly established production site on a 7,5 ha land plot in Velikiy Mosty, Sokal Region, invites the children of their employees together with their parents to celebrate the St. Nickolaus day. Alltogether nearly 300 persons. This time the festivities took place in the fabulous restaurant “Marichka” in the village Boyanets, close to the KLINGSPOR plant. The program was organized by the Lviv based Event Agency “Meri Diana”. WSF WORLD STRONGMAN CHAMPIONSHIP One of the most anticipated events in the world of extreme power lifting took place in Lviv on December 20th as the World Strongman Federation (WSF) hosted 110kg World Strongman Championship. Some of the finest strongmen from across Europe participated in the competition, which was judged by repeat strongman champion and Ukraine’s strongest man – Vasyl Virastuk. Strongmen from 13 countries were present and included: Volodymyr Reksha (UKR), Vitaliy Gerasymov (UKR), Michail Vysochansky (RUS), Vadim Smolyak (MOL), Shay Ryan (IRL), Dmitriy Naranov (KAZ), Hamza Primov (UZB), Arturas Urbonavicius (LIT), Maris Rozentals (LAT), Krzsysztof Kacnerski (POL), Vusal Murdanov (AZE), Laslo Biro (HUN), David Nagy (SLV), Velizar Mitov (BUL). After several events that included tire-flip (340kg), car lift (340kg), and log lift, Ukraine’s own Volodymyr Reksha was crowned champion. Russia’s Michail Vysochansky and Lativia’s Maris Rozentals finished second and third respectively.

Politekhnika-Halychyna Finds Stride, Hits Roadbump It was an up and down month for our men on the court as the team was able to string together some victories, while at the same time having to deal with some major personnel changes. With wins over Dnipro, DniproAzot, Mykolaiv, and rivals Hoverla (and a loss to BC Kyiv) the team improved their record to 7–6 – good for 6th in the league. At the same time, the squad was forced to deal with the departures of head coach Željko Lukajić, assistant coach Dushan Gvozdich as well as star centre Vladan Vukosavljević, who all left the club in December. In their absence, American point guard Kendall Dykes has stepped up his game, leading the team in scoring in each of their four wins. The team will continue to try to make up ground in January by hosting 9th-ranked BC Kyiv on Jan. 17 and 5th-ranked Ferro-ZNTU on Jan. 26 at Lviv’s Halychyna Sports Palace (8 Kerchenska St.)

Winter Fairytale
«ЗИМОВА КАЗКА»
Lviv was the proud host of the “Winter Fairytale” international rhythmic gymnastics competition from December 20–21. Over 170 of the top rhythmic gymnasts from across Europe participated in the competition. Athletes travelled from Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Slovakia, Moldova, Poland, Bulgaria, and across Ukraine to Lviv for the event. Local organizers point out that events such as Lviv’s Gymnastics Open and ‘Winter Fairytale’ promote healthy living among youth. The ‘Winter Fairytale’ competition, held annually since 2004, brings together some of the top athletes in the world of rhythmic gymnastics. Among the winners of this year’s competition included hometown favorites Olga Kozak and Daria Stadnitska, as well as Kyiv’s own Kateryna Shulygina and Karina Zubal. Other winners include Daria Komarnytska from Mykolaiv, as well as Moldova’s Aida Bashych and Krystyna Arnaut.

Shoots for Gold in Sochi Taking Aim at First Ukrainian Winter Olympic Gold since Oksana Baiul in 1994

ou have to look back a long ways to the last time Ukraine tasted Winter Olympic gold – Forrest Gump ruled the cinemas, Okean Elzy was just beginning to practice as a group in their garages, and Leonid Kravchuk was still President. It was also the year that a tearful 16-year-old Oksana Baiul skated to Ukraine’s lone Olympic gold medal since independence. That could all change when the Ukrainian women’s biathlon team straps on the skis and rifles in Sochi next month. Led by team captain and National Olympic Committee of Ukraine’s Athlete of the Month for January, Olena Pidhrushna, Ukraine’s women biathletes will be shooting for gold. The young team finished 6th in Team Relay in Vancouver four years ago, took silver in the same event at the World Championships last year, and have medalled in back-to-back world cup events this winter. For the lead-up to the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi next month, Lviv Today introduces you to our best medal hopes – the Ukrainian Women’s Biathlon Team:

Team Captain and best hope for a Ukrainian medal in Sochi, Ternopil’s own Pidhrushna is a threat in every event. At the Biathlon World Championships in the Czech Republic last year, the talented Pidhrushna took home a medal of each colour in sprint, relay, and pursuit. This season she has medalled at all four World Cup events, including gold as part of the Team Relay. She is the reigning world champion in the 7.5km sprint.
One half of the Semerenko twins on the women’s biathlon team, Valja already has three World Championship medals, including a silver and bronze at last year’s event in the Czech Republic. She’s won four medals on the World Cup circuit this year, including gold in both the relay and the pursuit. She is the reigning bronze medallist in the 15km individual race.

She is also a key member of the 4x6km relay team that won silver at the World Championships and has medalled twice on the World Cup circuit this season, including gold in Austria.
Just because Juliya is the newest member to the women’s relay team, doesn’t mean she isn’t a threat to medal in Sochi. In addition to the silver she won with the team at last year’s World Championships and the two team World Cup medals from this season, Juliya won gold in the 10km pursuit in Austria in early December. She’ll be hungry for more than just a medal in the team relay.

EBA GENERAL SUMMARY My dear friends, I hope that 2013 brought you a lot of good changes, new business prospects and good business partners. Of course 2013 was not an easy year, but still European Business Association was active and hopefully effective for its members. Now I would like to share with you some information about our activities during 2013 at Western Ukrainian office of EBA. As you might know our activities are divided into three main branches, such as Committees activities, Social events and Official meetings. Let me start with the Official meetings. Throughout 2013 we held five big official meetings. Among them the EBA business breakfast with Lviv City Mayor Mr. Sadovyy. We discussed the issues of land lease, constructions permits, roads, airport and City Council activities as to attracting investors to the city. Besides, while talking about official meetings, I should also mention the activity of Regional Coordination Council of Western Ukrainian office of EBA (EBA Board in Lviv). They had two meetings with former Lviv oblast Governor Mr. Shemchuk, and two working meetings with newly elected Mr. Salo. All the meetings showed that Lviv Oblast Administration is willing to be a partner for foreign and domestic investors. I would also like to mention several meetings that we had with Tax Administration and Customs (now it is Main department of Ministry of Revenue and Duties of Ukraine in Lviv Region). We had the meeting with those organizations in order to solve some

individual issues. I’m happy to inform you that 78% of the questions were solved in a framework of regional possibilities and competence. Now I would like to say a few words about our Committees meetings. Thus, I can state that it was a hot time in this area. We held 47 meetings, in which around 1000 people participated. The most active this year were Legal, Management and Tax&Accounting Committees. Their chairmen organized meetings each month, some of them twice a month, in order to discuss and share the experience on topics concerning the committees. As usual, HR Committee met often and discussed the most important issues of Human Resources. Luckily, this year was marked by the activation of Marketing Committee. We elected a new Chairman and she invited a very interesting and famous speaker Garrett Jonson, who shared his experience with the EBA members. The third branch of EBA activities, as mentioned above, is Social and Sport events. They help us to become closer to each other. During 2013 we had our traditional events such as EBA minifootball tournament, EBA Family day, EBA Ice Skating, EBA VIP Networking, EBA Afterwork lounges and Meetings with InterNations. Our members competed also in EBA Billiard tournament which we restored this year. According to them EBA did not organize any events in Lviv throughout December 2013. The statements and requests were sent to the EBA members and to the Board in Kiev. Nevertheless, please except our congratulation on the 2014 New Year and Christmas holidays! New Year is always a new beginning and we have made a very good start into it. One of the major problems parties may face in international trade is unforeseeable changed circumstances, known as force majeure. The term ‘force majeure’ has no recognized legal meaning, unless it is defined in a contract. Therefore it is very important to consider carefully the range of events which enable the parties to claim force majeure under the contract. A force majeure clause enables the contracting party to discharge itself from its contractual obligations where performance of the contract is no longer possible or is substantially different from that which was originally agreed. For that reason contract with appropriate force majeure clauses is an effective tool for protecting commercial interests. Key issues the party should know regarding force majeure clause: 1. There is no exhaustive list of force majeure circumstances defined in the Ukrainian legislation. Though you can find criteria that define such circumstances in the Commercial Code of Ukraine (articles 218, 219) and in the Civil Code of Ukraine (articles 263, 617). Among the most common circumstances included in the contracts are: acts of God, flood, earthquake, storm, natural disaster and adverse or extreme weather, epidemic and pandemic, war, armed conflict, sanction, embargo, nuclear, chemical or biological contamination, fire, explosion, or malicious damage, terrorist attack, riot. Since it is impossible to include all kinds of force majeure events the following provision is often added to catch any other similar events which are not in the list: “or any other event beyond the control of the relevant party”. Therefore, it is very important to provide a thorough list of external events that could occur and that might affect the performance or your contract. 2. The fact of force majeure occurrence is not the reason that immediately discharges the party from its contractual obligations. Party that has breached the contract must prove the following: occurrence of the circumstances of unpreventable force; their extraordinary character; impossibility to avoid damage under these circumstances; causal connection between these circumstances and incurred damages. 3. Official confirmation of force majeure that applies to international contracts and contracts of foreign economic activity is made by the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Sometimes regional Chambers of Commerce and Industry issue certificates that confirm force majeure as well, though, it should be taken into account that such certificates are not considered by the court during litigation process. Consequently it is recommended to obtain such certificate confirming the force majeure from the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry that is situated in Kyiv. 4. Court practice proves that not all force majeure events that party considers as unforeseeable should be defined as force majeure. For example, Civil Code of Ukraine (article 617) envisages that the total absence of commodities on the market is not being presumed as force majeure for the debtor. Supreme Court of Ukraine defines such cases as the risk of doing business that despite of focusing on getting profit, is also at the risk of losing its property. For that reason the party that has breached the contract has to prove the fulfilling of all possible obligations in order to avoid the breach of contract. Thus, when considering a force majeure clause, the parties should pay attention to its key elements, as described above, with specific regard to the type of contract in which it is placed, list of force majeure events, risk allocation and the commercial context in which they are dealing, the potential for dispute and litigation may be minimized.

The results of 22 waves of the Investment Attractiveness Index of Ukraine I
n the 4th quarter of 2013, investing-members of the European Business Association surveyed for the Investment Attractiveness Index, estimated the business climate as 1.81 out of 5, which is the lowest index in the history of the measurements made since 2008. How did the business mood change in spring this year? After nearly two years of consistently low expert reviews, in the third quarter of this year, the Investment Attractiveness Index was fixed up at 2.39 points. The reason for this was the Ukrainian Government’s confident European integration rhetoric, an established geopolitical vector in the context of preparations for Ukraine’s signing of the Association Agreement with the EU. At the end of November business expectations didn’t come true, and business took the decision of the Government to change their tactical approach to this long-awaited deal with a great disappointment. As a result, the level of investor confidence in Ukraine fell to the lowest level in the history of the measurement – dropping to 1.81. Forecasts for the first quarter of 2014 are also negative, and experts believe that the investment climate in Ukraine will continue to deteriorate. Methodology: the Investment Attractiveness Index is calculated as an average of five components:
• Investment climate in Ukraine (1.5 points) • Dynamics of the investment climate: last 3 months (1.7) • Expected dynamics of the investment climate: next 3 months (1.8) • Utility for new entrants to invest in Ukraine: last 3 months (2.0) • Investment climate in the key sectors: next 3 months (2.0) For the first time in the history of the index’s measurement, all the experts did not mention any positive changes in the investment climate. There were only one-off attempts to find some improvements in the process, which were based on the arrangement of the Summit in Vilnius and resulted from steps made by the Government towards EU integration. The most important negative factor in the 4th quarter was the refusal to sign the Association Agreement. This was pointed out by more than 50 per cent of respondents, who also mentioned negative outcomes such as political instability, the budg-

et shortfall, and risks of the Ukrainian national currency falling. The rest of experts mentioned a further deterioration of the economic situation, further corruption and continued administrative pressure towards business. The backdrop of these points of view – was the absence of any hope for improvements in the near future. As for the 7 key problems usually raised by the EBA in the context of business and its relations with the Government, we need to point out that the characteristics primarily remain the same: the current situation is considered to be particularly unfavorable for solving the problem of corruption and the unfair courts system, a rather unfavorable environment for solving land issues, the VAT refund, the technical barriers to trade, currency regulation and customs clearance. Volodymyr Lavrenchuk, EBA Board Member, and CEO, Raiffeisen Bank Aval: “In order to prove that the research behind the European Business Association’s Investment Attractiveness Indexis objective, I can attest to some numbers. The net inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the ten months of 2013 totaled 2.4 billion dollars, which is 54% lower than the same period in 2012. For the first time in the history of independent Ukraine, in May, September and October a negative balance of FDI was recorded. According to our forecast, the inflow of FDI in 2013 will amount to 3.0 billion dollars, the lowest indicator since 2004. Domestic investment activity also remains weak. In January – September 2013, the volume of capital investment fell by 12.3% compared to the previous year (in 2012 the growth was 8.8%). The most catastrophic situation has been observed in the transportation and mining industry – with falls in investment by 48.7% and 27% respectively. Deterioration in all parameters of index were in line with the expectations of the business community, who are concerned with efforts to improve the business environment, including the failure to sign the agreement with the EU.” LVIV TODAY | January 2014
