HAV E A ME R RY (Martial) Christmas When celebrating the holiday season with the ones you love most, let’s remember those that can’t celebrate with their loved ones.

hen Lviv’s cobblestone streets turn white with snow, the smell of baked-goods fills the air, and a certain Mariah Carey ditty is played over and over – you know that the holiday season has returned. Lviv’s markets are packed with boys looking for that perfect gift for that lovely lady in their life. Hotels are filled with office Christmas parties of every sort. And Svoboda Avenue is crammed with families taking pictures in the beautiful Christmas tree in front of the Opera House. But not every family gets to be together at this time of year and events in Eastern Ukraine last month reminded us of that.

moniker ‘Martial Law Lite’, but its powers are still far-reaching. In the oblasts where martial law is in place, the government can, among other things: impose curfews, limit your freedom of movement, confiscate your apartment for use of the military, ban protests, take your telecom equipment, ban alcohol, and mobilise the military. While Poroshenko has said he will limit the use of his new powers unless there is an invasion, and they don’t apply in the Lviv region anyways, it’s telling that martial law has never been used before – not during the Maidan, the seizure of Crimea, the fight for Donetsk, or at any point during the conflict in the East.

with little more than the clothes on their backs. There are several agencies and NGOs doing good work with this population in Lviv. I encourage you to check out the work of groups like the UNHCR (the UN’s refugee agency), IOM (International Organisation for Migration), Right to Protection, and CrimeaSOS. Maybe they’re doing a toy drive for conflict-related orphans. Perhaps they are raising funds for the widows of soldiers. Or maybe there is a goods fair featuring crafts made by IDPs. Whatever way you find to remember those affected by war at the merriest time of year, let’s spare a moment this year for those who find this season more difficult without having the ones they love most around them.

For example, 24 Ukrainian sailors were fired upon and captured in the Kerch Strait last month. Twelve remain in custody in Russia. This has led to a strong reaction from Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. Insisting that a landbased Russian invasion was imminent, the President instituted martial law in Ukraine for the very first time. The initial version was watered down so that it will only last for 30 days (instead of 60) and only appear in 10 oblasts (Lviv not being one of them). This earned the move the

IN LVIV CHRISTMAS SEASON The Spirit of Christmas is coming to Lviv and bringing along with it lots of fun and expectations for the coming merry season, for now it is time to take a break and enjoy your days filled with shopping, dining, and socializing. Lviv’s Christmas markets – Rynok Square and the Alley in front of the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (Svobody Ave.)- opened on 7 December to officially kickoff the festive season. Filling the city with traditional wooden huts, the scent of mulled wine, and swarms of shoppers, the attraction will be open throughout the holiday season until 20 January. Both Christmas markets are home to over 100 unique stalls that sell seasonal delights, crafts and unique items, and various entertainments. Visitors can enjoy delicious drinks and live music while shopping underneath the city’s glittering Christmas tree. Some come and search for that perfect Christmas gift while enjoying the most wonderful time of the year at one of Ukraine’s most sensational holiday markets! Traditionally the Christmas season offers Leopolitans and guests of the city many interesting events to visit, such as the “Blaze of the Christmas Star” festival that continues the ancient Ukrainian tradition of making large (up to 2m) Christmas stars – the main symbol of the festivities. Another traditional Christmas event that you don’t want to miss is the “Great Carol” festival that features Ukrainian customs, songs and carols and is held in January at the St. Eucharist Church (3 Museina Sq.). If you’re looking for something a little more active, why not head over to Rynok Square’s gorgeous open-air ice rink. Leopolitans and guests of the city that need some support on the ice can lean on one of the instructors, who will gladly help new skaters of any age. Don’t worry if you left your skates at home – you can always rent a pair directly at the rink. A great way to defrost afterwards is with a steaming mug of hot chocolate and cake in any one of the adjoining coffeehouses.

РІЗДВЯНІ СВЯТА У ЛЬВОВІ Наближаються давно очікувані Різдвяні свята, а з ними й зустрічі в родинному колі з тими кого давно не бачили – тепер прийшов час для дружнього спілкування. Пориньте у святкову атмосферу на новорічно-різдвяних ярмарках – розташованих на пл. Ринок та вздовж просп. Свободи які відкрилися вже 7 грудня і будуть тривати аж до 20 січня. Марно намагатись переповісти усі принади святкових ярмарків, з їх спокусливими ароматами глінтвейну, кави та печених ковбасок, традиційної медовухи й варенухи і, безумовно ж, пампухів – усе це треба відчути й скуштувати самому. На святкових ярмарках можна буде придбати сувеніри й подарунки для знайомих, друзів і коханих. Центром усієї святкової метушні та веселощів, звичайно ж, буде красуня-ялинка перед оперним театром. Традиційно у дні свят проходить фестиваль “Спалах Різдвяної зірки”, коли містом ходять колядники з велетенськими (1,5 – 2 метра) саморобними різдвяними зірками, головним символом свята. Ще один традиційний фестиваль – "Велика Коляда"- відбудеться в січні під склепіннями Домініканського собору (пл. Музейна, 3) де прозвучать відомі й забуті українські колядки у виконанні хорів і ансамблів з різних міст і сіл України. Навіть якщо ви ніколи не замислювалися про кар'єру у фігурному катанні, безумовно, варто спробувати хоча б раз, і чому не в цьому сезоні? Прихопіть із собою ковзани, або позичте на час та приходьте на чудову ковзанку на відкритому повітрі позаду Ратуші. Тим, хто вперше бачать лід, допоможуть досвідчені дбайливі інструктори. Відігрітись після перебування на льоду можна за допомогою гарячого шоколаду й тістечок, які можна знайти у численних кав’ярнях неподалік. Атмосфера свят, що надходять, витає навкруги, люди з усієї України, приїжджають до нашого міста, щоб зануритись у цей вир позитивних емоцій і зберегти цей настрій надовго завдяки гостинності львів’ян, які докладають усіх зусиль, щоб усім було добре і гості приїхали знову. WEST POLE DANCE COMPETITION 14 December at 17:00 at Malevich Night Club & Concert Arena (2 Chornovola St.) Lviv’s hopping Malevich Night Club will host the West International Pole Dance Contest on 14 December. Pole dance combines dance and acrobatics centred on a vertical pole. Not just in the domain of erotic dance at gentlemen’s clubs any longer, the performance art has now gained popularity as a mainstream form of fitness, practiced by many enthusiasts in gyms and dedicated dance studios. Pole dancing requires significant muscular endurance, coordination, and flexibility. Upper body and core strength are required to attain proficiency and proper instruction and rigorous training is necessary. In addition to technique, style is also important which is why amateur and professional pole dancing competitions are held throughout the world to determine the sport’s top dancers. KIZZ UP! DAYS OF UKRAINIAN CINEMA 13–16 December at 18:00 at Kopernik Cinema (9 Kopernika St.) Lviv’s Kopernik Cinema will host the Days of Ukrainian Cinema event from 13–16 December. Organised by the Lviv Film Commission and Wiz-Art, the festivities will also feature ‘Lviv Film Meetings’ that are sure to attract many fans of Ukrainian cinematography. The festival will offer Leopolitan film fans and guests of the city a selection of the very best of contemporary Ukrainian cinema so that audiences can discover just how diverse the industry has become. Festival will be opened with presentation of latest selection of short films by Ukrainian directors. Other screenings will feature 5 films, each of which became notable event in the history of Ukrainian cinematography: adventure/fantasy The Stronghold ("Storozhova zastava"), documentary “Ukrainian Sheriffs”, comedy "The Strayed" (Prypytni), war drama “Cyborgs” and a Ukraine-Macedonia-Poland co-production 'When the Trees Fall' ('Koly padayut dereva') . MORSHYN’S 11 A UKRAINIAN COMEDY FILM Ukrainian cinema continues to reach new levels and cool new films keep becoming more famous and successful. For example, Hollywood first helped us make the film ‘Zakhar Berkut’, and now comes the Ukrainian comedy ‘Morshyn’s 11’. The film is based on an ancient legend that says that the city of Morshyn was founded on the site where a meteorite made of the rare metal osmium crashed. Villains hope to earn easy money by stealing the osmium and fooling everyone, but can’t get past 11 brave kids from Morshyn, who unite in their common goal to oppose evil and struggle against injustice. The film was produced by Solar Media Entertainment, owner of Ukraine’s Sonce TV and the company behind such popular Ukrainian films as #SelfieParty (2016), Dzidzio Contrabass (2016), and When the Trees Fall (2018). The stellar cast is a “who’s who” of Ukrainian cinema stars and includes the likes of Ada Rogovtseva, Vladimir Goryansky, Elena Lavrenyuk, Alexander Skichko, and Ksenia Zhdanova. Even the soundtrack attracted a Ukrainian heavyweight, as Sergey Babkin wrote the songs and stars in the film. The release date is set for 3 January. Спільно з колегами з Голівуду був створений історичний фільм "Захар Беркут", а тепер на черзі комедія "11 дітей з Моршина". В ньому йдеться про стародавню легенду, яка стверджує, що Моршин був заснований на місці, де впав метеорит з рідкісного металу осмію. MAYAN CULTURE: ORIGINS, ACHIEVEMENTS AND INFLUENCE IN TODAY’S WORLD 18 December at 18:30 at UCU’s Sheptytsky Centre (29 Stryiska St.) Imagine a world hidden amidst the Central American jungle, full of the fragrances and colours of tropical nature, where modern luxury meets ancient traditions. A place where you can feel the heroic history of a great people; a place where nature and culture are intertwined. This is the world of the Maya, one of the most prominent and mysterious civilisations of the New World. Although the height of Mayan influence ended over a thousand years ago, we are only now learning the details of their lives as we discover how to read their written language. From 650 – 800 CE, Mayan kings and nobles lived in the tropical rainforests of what is now southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize. Even today, archaeologists continue to uncover new finds and decipher ancient glyphs that tell a new story of the Maya. Mayan descendants still live in southern Mexico and Central America, where they preserve characteristics of their ancestors’ culture. For example, corn and chocolate – two of the Mayans’ most common foods – continue to be prominent in contemporary belief systems. On 18 December, UCU’s Sheptytsky Centre will host a lecture by Maya historian and epigrapher Yuriy Polyukhovych. After studying at Kyiv’s Mohyla Academy and Shevchenko universities, his research has taken him to the United States, Mexico, and Guatemala, where he’s worked for projects like the Maya Hieroglyphic Database Project, the Hieroglyphic Texts of Sites and Museums in Campeche Documentation Project, and the Yucatan and Quintana Roo Sacrificial Altar Archaeological Project. ICE SCULPTURE FESTIVAL 11–13 January in front of the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre Lviv’s winter holiday season will once again be graced by the wonderful Ice Sculpture festival, taking place in the city centre from 11–13 January. Seven professional sculptors will create major ice sculptures inspired by the unique heritage of Johann Georg Pinsel. One of the most prominent Ukrainian artists of the 18th Century, Pinsel’s skill and originality is comparable to any European contemporaries of the time. In fact, Leopolitan art lovers and guests of the city that want to learn more can stop by the museum in Lviv specifically dedicated to his work. The Ice Sculpture Festival will feature a competition where some of Lviv’s top artists will decide on the best sculpture of the festival. Judging criteria includes the overall impression of the work and the idea behind it, the sculpture’s detail and sophistication, the symmetry, proportions, and composition of the work, and the fineness of the ice processing. rom his birthplace in Lawrence, Massachusetts to New York, Berlin, South Africa, China, Israel, and Ukraine, Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was a larger-than-life conductor, pianist, composer and all-around bon vivant. His fame was derived from his long tenure as the musical director of the New York Philharmonic, from conducting for many of the world’s leading orchestras, and from his iconic music for productions such as West Side Story, Peter Pan, On the Waterfront, and Candide. To mark the centennial of his birth, a two-year bonanza of concerts, stage productions, and programs is planned – including here in his ancestral home of Ukraine. In fact, just last month U.S. Embassy Cultural Affairs Officer Sean O’Hara traveled to Rivne – where Bernstein’s parents were from – to take part in the ceremonial opening of a memorial plaque.

FROM RIVNE TO HARVARD – THE EARLY YEARS Born to Ukrainian Jewish parents from Rivne, his father was destined to become a rabbi before arriving in NYC, where he became a fish cleaner. He eventually built a profitable business distributing beauty products and Leonard grew up understanding that business and success were paramount, so ‘occupations’ in the fields of music and art were simply off-limits. He started playing the piano at the age of 10, after his Aunt Clara needed a place to store hers while going through a divorce. While he loved everything about the instrument, his father refused to pay for lessons – so ‘Lenny’ raised money on his own. A natural from the start, by the time of his bar mitzvah, his father was impressed enough to buy him his own baby grand piano. The young Bernstein found

inspiration everywhere and played with a voracity and spontaneity that impressed anyone who listened. His family spent their summers at their Massachusetts vacation home and he attended the Boston Latin School, where his met his first teacher and lifelong mentor, Helen Coates. He went on to study music theory at Harvard and spent a year of intensive training at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music.

BECOMING A GIANT – THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC It was difficult to find work after graduating, but a touch of luck saw him land the assistant conductor position at the New York Philharmonic. Lenny had asthma, which kept him from serving in the military. As there were few able musicians in the country at the time due to the war, they turned to Lenny in 1943 when the company’s prestigious director fell ill. The young conductor amazed the crowd so much that the New York Times published a front-page article about his performance. Overnight, Bernstein became a sought-after conductor. He’d lead the Philharmonic 11 more times by the end of the season. Bernstein’s international career began to flourish following the war. In addition to conducting the New York City Center Orchestra, he guest conducted across the USA, Europe, and Israel. He continued to tour internationally throughout the 1950s and founded the Creative Arts Festival at Brandeis University. He discovered a love of teaching and his TV shows Omnibus and Young People’s Concerts allowed him to speak to a whole new audience of music lovers. Always a fan of both classical and pop music, he wrote his first operetta (Candide) in 1956. He also

provided the music for 1957’s original Broadway production of the smash hit West Side Story, which garnered unanimous rave reviews matched only by its release on the big screen in 1961.

BERNSTEIN THE LEGEND – A CAREER WELL-LIVED The USA and USSR signed their first post-WWII accord in 1958 allowing for the exchange of professionals in the cultural, technical, and educational fields. It was Bernstein that conducted the New York Philharmonic’s first tour to the USSR at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory Hall in Moscow. The tour played 50 concerts in 17 countries, including three weeks in the Soviet Union. Touring and his commitment to the New York Philharmonic left him little time for other activities, like composing. He stepped down as the Philharmonic’s Music Director in 1969 to focus on other areas. His long and storied career would see him lead some of the world’s leading orchestras, write music for some of the 20th Century’s most beloved stage and film productions, and win some of the industry’s most prestigious awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Grammy. He retired from conducting on 9 October 1990 and died of a heart attack less than a week later.

REMEMBERING ‘LENNY’ Bernstein’s command of multiple musical languages, the daring juxtapositions of genre and style, his political outspokenness and, of course, the sheer fluency of invention have ensured this musical giant’s legacy continues to grow. Public appreciation for the man and his music is evident as thousands of Leonard Bernstein centennial events took place across the globe in 2018.

hen thinking about winter vacationing, Eastern Europe is not usually the first place that comes to mind. “Winter vacationing in Ukraine?! Oh no – I bet it’s full of snow-covered grey buildings, bears roaming the streets, gand temperatures resembling a frozen hell”, many Europeans might argue. Needless to say, most of those stereotypes couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead, a winter trip to Ukraine can be one of the most surprising, high-spirited, and eye-opening winter trips you’ve ever taken!

Ukraine is known for its bevy of colourful, ancient traditions. These customs teach us a lot about Ukraine’s history, culture, and philosophy. Besides the more famous ones, there are some less well-known gems that deserve special focus, like Malanka. You probably know that Ukraine celebrates two Christmases and New Years (based on both the Gregorian and Julian calendars), but how much do you really know about Malanka – the traditional celebration of ‘Old New Year’s’? This lively celebration is based on ancient traditions and might be worth a specific winter trip to Ukraine just to experience!

Ukraine’s very own Mardi Gras The essence of Malanka is similar to carnivals in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans, except that it’s celebrated on the (Old) New Year instead of before Lent. The name of the feast comes from St. Melania Day (31 Dec / 13 Jan) and celebrations typically begin after sunset. Known as the ‘Generous Evening’ (Shchedryi Vechir) in Ukraine, participants dress as characters from the famous Ukrainian holiday play known as Vertep – as Vasyl, the She-Goat, the Old Man, the Roma, the Doctor, the Cat, and as Malanka herself, which is usually played by a gregarious young man dressed in women’s clothing. His makeup is bizarre – his face is whitened with chalk, his eyebrows darkened with soot, and his cheeks reddened with beet juice. The play showcases a clumsy housewife whose housekeeping efforts keep everyone entertained. The performers take their play from door-to-door and even to the streets.

Chernivtsi – the Heart of Ukraine’s Malanka Chernivtsi and Vashkivtsi in the Chernivtsi oblast are known as some of the best places to take in the most traditional of Malanka celebrations.

Vashkivtsi is a small village with a population of about 5,000 people, but the village more than doubles in size when Malanka comes to town. With a heritage going back for over a century, Vashkivtsi’s Malanka celebrations lay legitimate claim to the main Ukrainian carnival. This is thanks in part to the village’s Austrian heritage; Count Petrino was a great admirer and he helped preserve and promote the event. Men vied to create the costume that would most impress the count and the generous aristocrat would reward each team of participants with a barrel of beer.

100 Years of Malanka in Vashkivtsi Today’s celebrations don’t veer too much from their famed past. Each character has its duty: the Old Man offers something to drink; the Old Lady sweeps the Devil out; and the Roma leads the Bear on a chain. Each Vashkivtsi district has its team of Cossacks, a Vulan (a Bukovyna-style officer), a Bukshandar in a gala uniform replete with a peacock-feather hat, and Malanka herself. They elect the most senior as the Kalfa (from ‘caliph’, dating back to when Bukovyna was part of Turkey). Kalfa is responsible for the costumes and LVIV TODAY | December 2018

ANOTHER RE ASON TO SPEND YOUR WINTER VACATION IN UKR AINE carnival procession itinerary. He also collects the ‘kolyada’, the financial prize rewarded from each of the performances that is shared between the cast during a post-performance party at the local tavern. One of the more interesting attributes of the festivities is the traditional bathing of Malanka participants in the small Teplichka river. The bathing is used to cleanse the participants of evil spirits, so it is forbidden to forego the freezing foray in the river.

Pagan Rituals Meet Modern Ukraine in Krasnoilsk Another colourful celebration takes place in the Bukovynian village of Krasnoilsk, which has become known for its outstanding pagan show. In the heart of ethnic Bukovyna, the small village unites the elements of Ukrainian, Bessarabian, Hutsul, and Romanian Malanka traditions. In fact, that’s where the names ‘Krasnoilska’ and ‘Krasna Malanka’ come from. It takes all day and all night for the Malanka to visit every house in the village, and not a single one will be forgotten. The village gets divided into sections and each gets its own Malanka. The most iconic characters are the bears, who are dressed in straw costumes weighing up to 30 kilograms! Other important roles include the Roma, chevaliers (who are usually played by children), and wicked doctors, police officers, and government officials.

Malanka-Fest 2018 in Chernivtsi The celebrations will move to Chernivtsi on 15 January, where the vibrant and fabulous Malanka-Fest will be held. This large-scale theatrical event combines religious and folklore traditions and has become an important international event involving participants from neighbouring countries and other parts of Ukraine. You won’t want to miss the carnival parade that starts at noon and then be sure to head over to the festival stage for a romping Old New Years concert. Last year, thousands of festivalgoers from across Europe saw more than 45 teams participate in one of Ukraine’s weirdest, wildest, and most bewildering cultural events. If you haven’t yet had a true Malanka experience, be sure to get down to Chernivtsi this January for one of Ukraine’s most unique cultural experiences!

ізні екзотичні країни мають свої барвисті традиції, які привертають до себе увагу численних етнографів і туристів. Наша земля теж не найбідніша фольклором країна, хоча й не має такої реклами у світі. Туристичні об’єкти бувають цілорічні, сезонні та унікальні – лише раз на рік. Туристи в Україні зазвичай їдуть битими шляхами – Київ, Львів, Одеса – але прогрес бере своє – фейсбуки та інстаграми рясніють повідомленнями тих, хто вже побував на "Переберії" у Вашківцях, заохочуючи всіх, незважаючи на зимовий холод, побачити це дивовижне дійство на власні очі.

В Україні всі знають, що Новий Рік та Різдво тут святкують за старим (юліанським) календарем, тобто на 13 днів пізніше, ніж європейці. Ніби трохи поза сезоном, але таким чином свята можна продовжити! Свято Маланки можна вважати схожим на карнавали в Ріо-де-Жанейро та Новому Орлеані, з тою різницею, що відмічається воно на Новий рік за старим стилем 14 січня, а не перед Великим постом. Це свято у різних формах та масштабах відмічають у багатьох селах України. Але найзнаменитіше і найяскравіше святкування Маланки можна побачити саме у Вашківцях Чернівецької області. Вже на підступах до села вас зустрінуть патрулі у неймовірних уніформах, спитають аусвайс і не вимагатимуть плату за в’їзд. Населення Вашківців – близько 5000 чоловік, але воно збільшується майже удвічі саме в цей день. Вулицями села ходять, їздять і танцюють дивовижні фігури в неймовірних костюмах і масках, серед яких можна впізнати відомих політиків, спортсменів, акторів та й місцевих знаменитостей також. Село невелике, прибувають сотні гостей звідусіль, тож можна легко собі уявити, який гармидер тут зчиняється. Назва свята походить від дня Святої Маланії (31 грудня ст. ст./13 січня н. ст.), і починається воно зазвичай після заходу сонця. Цей вечір в Україні також називають "щедрим", а всі учасники свята одягаються як персонажі вертепу – тут і Василь, і Коза, Дід та Баба, Циган, Доктор і сама Маланка, в яку

зазвичай перевбирається (від чого й походить назва Переберія) молодий чоловік, обличчя якого набілене та нарум’янене понад всяку міру, брови підмальовані сажею, а взуття на високих підборах. Звідки ж походить ця традиція? Сам звичай дуже давній, мабуть іще з дохристиянських часів, а допомогла його розвинути Вашківцям австрійська аристократія понад 100 років тому. Тодішній власник села граф Петріно був великим шанувальником старовини й екзотики і саме з його легкої руки невеличке село на Буковині на два дні в році перетворювалось на карнавальний вир, де кожна група (пор. з бразильськими школами самби) намагалась вразити уяву графа, щоб отримати нагороду – бочку пива чи вина. Той, хто виготовив і представив найкращу карнавальну маску, грівся в променях слави аж до наступного року. Сучасне святкування Маланки не надто відрізняється за своєю суттю від того, що було сто років тому. У кожного персонажу є свої обов'язки: Дід наллє вам чарчину і змусить випити; Баба відганяє мітлою нечисту силу, цигани водять ведмедя на ланцюгу. У кожному районі (кутку) Вашківців є своя команда, до якої обов’язково входять – Вулан (офіцер), Букшандар (поліцай) у парадній формі, в капелюсі з павиним пером, і, звісно ж, сама Маланка. Вони обирають старшину – Калфу (що, мабуть походить від слова "халіф", з часів, коли Буковина входила до складу османської імперії). Калфа відповідає за проектування і виготовлення костюмів та за маршрут карнавальної процесії. Він також збирає "коляду" – гонорар від публіки та господарів, до яких вони завертали, щоб повіншувати, який розподіляється між акторами, коли вони потім збираються у шинку. Одним з найцікавіших звичаїв, від якого просто кров стигне в жилах, є традиційне купання всіх учасників карнавалу після його завершення в крижаних водах потоку Тепличка, що протікає через село. Купання необхідне для очищення учасників від злих духів, і досі не відомо жодного випадку, коли б хоч один з них простудився. Також у великій ватрі спалюють усі костюми й маски, щоб згинула вся нечиста сила.

Карнавал у Краноїлську Не менш оригінально святкують Маланку в буковинському селі Красноїльськ, яке прославилось своїм варіантом святкування. У самому серці етнічної Буковини невелике село об'єднує традиції української, бессарабської, гуцульської та румунської Маланки. Вона так тут і називається – "Красноїльська" або "Красна Маланка". Весь день і всю ніч Маланка (а їх тут аж п’ять!) з усім своїм кортежем ходить від дому до дому з барабанами, криками й музикою та віншує господарям "на щастя, на здоров’я, на Новий рік!" часом дотепно й бешкетно, часом добродушно, але не мине нікого! Галас стоїть над селом неймовірний! Тут так само, як і у Вашківцях, Маланка збирає свою команду на кожному "кутку" села. Найбільше тут "ведмедів" (часом більше схожих на велетенських метеликів), одягнених в солом'яні костюми вагою часом до 30 кілограмів і більше, яких водять на ланцюгу "цигани", більше схожі на негрів, з булавами та сокирами, а подекуди, й з рушницями (виглядають дуже агресивно!). Також вулицями гарцюють "вершники" (малі хлопці), походжають фальшиві "доктори", "поліцаї", "чесні митники" та "слуги народу".

Маланка-Фест 2018 у Чернівцях Святкування продовжується 15 січня у Чернівцях, де пройде яскравий та казковий Маланка-Фест. Ця масштабне театралізоване свято поєднує релігійні та фольклорні традиції та вже стало важливою міжнародною подією за участю гостей з сусідніх країн та інших частин України. Це таки варто побачити на власні очі – карнавальний парад, який починається о полудні та концерт "Старий Новий Рік". Торік тисячі гостей фестивалю з усієї Європи могли побачити виступи понад 45 колективів, які взяли участь у одному з найдивовоижніших, найгучніших (щоб не сказати – варварських) масових заходів зимових свят. Якщо ви, часом, ще не бачили справжньої Маланки, не забудьте приїхати до Чернівців, чи будь-якого із сіл Буковини, де ще не забули давні традиції, щоб було що викласти в інтернет і розповідати дітям та онукам!

ROKSOL ANA BOGUTSK A FASHION SHOW Ukrainian fashion designer Roksolana Bohutska presented her newest collection at Truskovets’ luxurious Mirotel resort on 3 November. This special fashion show had elegant models sporting outfits from her Autumn / Winter 2019 collection and furs by the Tykafurlux brand. Several of Lviv’s top modelling agencies provided the lovely ladies for the occasion to present Leopolitan fashion lovers and guests of the city with 73 spectacular outfits. The stunning collection featured colourful prints, ethnic motifs, and elegant cuts, and were complemented by trendy accessories made of leather and fur, something of a calling card from the inimitable Bohutska.

THE NE W "SATIRIKON" CARICATURES GALLERY The new ‘Satirikon’ Gallery featuring caricatures opened in Lviv on 30 November. The first exhibition featured a collection of the finest works of Kyiv-based caricaturist Victor Kudin. Kudin has worked in the genre for over 30 years for the famous Ukrainian magazine ‘Perets’ (Pepper) and has won many international contests. The ‘Satirikon’ Gallery promises to popularise cartoons both as a genre of art and social phenomenon by showcasing the works of Ukrainian and foreign cartoonists to Leopolitan art fans and guests of the city. Located in the Bankhotel building at 17 B. Lepkoho St., this charming gallery will also serve as an art bar offering signature cocktails.

ГА ЛЕРЕ Я К АРИК АТ УРИСТІВ "САТИРИКОН" У п’ятницю 30 листопада,у Львові відбулося відкриття галереї карикатури "Satirikon". Першою експозицією у стінах галереї стала підбірка найкращих робіт ініціатора, відомого київського карикатуриста і архітектора Віктора Кудіна. Він учасник та лауреат престижних міжнародних конкурсів, який вже 30 років працює у жанрі карикатури в тому числі й у відомому українському “Перці”. Саме у нього виникла ідея відкрити у Львові окрему галерею карикатури, де можна було б ознайомитись із роботами найкращих українських та закордонних авторів. Галерея "Satirikon" буде працювати на популяризацію карикатури як художнього жанру і соціального явища. Галерея розташована на вул. Лепкого, 17 у будівлі готелю Bankhotel. Мистецький простір працюватиме у форматі арт-бару з авторськими коктейлями.

USING CHESS TO HELP OTHERS Lviv hosted a charity chess event last month that saw former World Rapid Chess champion Vasyl Ivanchuk and international grandmaster Oleh Romanyshyn play several games simultaneously. Organised by the Lviv Rotary Club, the event attracted many participants, including fans of FC Karpaty and Lutsk Volyn, students from local chess clubs, and members of various rotary clubs. In addition to raising funds for charity, organisers aimed to popularise the playing of the “king’s game”. The event managed to raise over 31,000 UAH which will go to children’s boarding schools in the communities of Lopatyn and Skole.

БЛАГОДІЙНИЙ СЕАНС У ШАХИ У Львові ввечері 29 листопада пройшов благодійний сеанс одночасної гри з міжнародними гросмейстерами ексчемпіоном світу Василем Іванчуком та Олегом Романишиним. В змаганнях, які організував Ротарі клуб "Львів", та які проводяться вже всьоме, взяли участь вихованці дитячих шахових гуртків міста, представники команди незрячих, футбольних клубів "Карпати", луцької "Волині" та різних ротарі клубів міста. Основною метою проведення цього сеансу була популяризація шахів в місті Львові та залучення коштів на благодійну діяльність. Було зібрано 31 тис. 513 гривень, які будуть спрямовані на фінансування програм допомоги дитячим школам-інтернатам в селі Лопатин Радехівського району та місті Сколе.

HORECA SHOW LVIV 2018 Lviv’s Pivdennyi Expo Centre played host to the popular HoReCa Show – the annual festival for the hospitality, hotel, and restaurant industries – from 7–9 November. Attendees learned about the latest achievements in the hotel and restaurant fields and got to taste and purchase many eco-friendly goods made by Ukrainian producers. There were also numerous culinary workshops, contests for bartenders and cooks, and plenty of tasty food on hand. Visitors were especially attracted to the Pizza Masters Championship, which named winners in three categories: biggest pizza dough stretching, quickest pizza dough stretching, and individual freestyle.

HORECA SHOW LVIV 2018 У Львові в приміщенні виставкового центру “Південний-EXPO” 7–9 листопада пройшов Фестиваль гостинності та готельноресторанного бізнесу “HoReCa Show Lviv 2018”. Протягом трьох днів тут можна було не лише ознайомитися з новітніми досягненнями готельно-ресторанного бізнесу, а й посмакувати та придбати еко-продукти українських виробників. В рамках фестивалю, відбулися гастрономічні майстеркласи та чемпіонати для кухарів, барменів та кулінарів. Найбільшу цікавість відвідувачів привернув чемпіонат Pizza Masters, який складався з трьох категорій: найбільша розтяжка, найшвидша розтяжка та індивідуальний фрістайл піца-майстрів.

WABBA UKRAINIAN BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS The World Amateur Body Building Association (WABBA) hosted its Ukrainian Bodybuilding Championships at Lviv’s Malevich Night Club on 18 November. Some of Ukraine’s fittest musclemen and women joined their European counterparts in Lviv to show off their personal skills and stunning appearances. Over 150 athletes competed in 21 categories, including: Fitness, Physique, and Model for men, and Bikini,

Shape, and Model for women. Sevastopol / Kyiv’s Andriy Potylytsyn claimed the Physique title, while Selidovo’s Sergiy Chernyak was named Bodybuilding champion and Kyiv’s Nataliya Kasperska claimed the Bikini crown. The event was used as a qualifier for the upcoming WABBA World Bodybuilding Championships, which will take place right here in the Western Ukrainian capital from 14-16 June 2019.

ЧЕМПІОНАТ УКРАЇНИ З БОДІБІЛДИНГУ WABBA Всесвітня аматорська асоціація бодібілдингу (WABBA) 18 листопада провела чемпіонат України з бодібілдингу у Львівському нічному клубі "Малевич". Деякі найвпливовіші чоловіки та жінки України приєдналися до своїх європейських колег у Львові, щоб продемонструвати свої атлетичні тіла та вміння ними володіти. Понад 150 спортсменів змагалися у 21 категорії, зокрема: "Фітнес", "Тілобудова",

"Чоловіча модель", "Бікіні", "Форма" та "Жіноча модель". Киянин родом із Севастополя Андрій Потилицин здобув титул "Форма", Сергій Черняк із Селідова став чемпіоном з бодібілдингу, а киянка Наталія Касперська стала переможницею у категорії "Бікіні". Ці змагання стали кваліфікаційними для майбутнього Чемпіонату світу з бодібілдингу WABBA, який відбудеться також у Львові 14-16 червня 2019 року.

Lviv Cyclist Stars at World Cup

World Cup in Baku

Lviv region’s Olena Starikova was the star of the recent Tissot UCI Cycling World Cup that took place at Berlin’s Velodrome last month. The star cyclist returned home with two medals – a gold in the 500m and a bronze in the sprint. Congratulations Olena and keep up the good work!

Baku, Azerbaijan’s sparkling National Gymnastics Arena hosted the FIG Acrobatic Gymnastics World Cup on 17–18 November. The two-day event saw athletes from across Europe compete in one of the sport’s most interesting and exciting disciplines in categories that included Men’s and Women’s Pairs, Men’s and Women’s Groups, and Mixed Pairs. Lviv region’s Yuliia Pylypiak and Oleksandra-Mariia Tabachynska came home with shiny silver medals for their efforts in the Women’s Pairs category. Congratulations to the winners and best of luck to our athletes and coaches in the upcoming season!

Велосипедний Спорт: Дві медалі Олени Старікової З 30 листопада до 2 грудня у місті Берліні проходив III етап Кубку світу з велосипедного спорту на треку. У складі збірної команди України спортсменка Львівщини Олена Старікова виборола дві медалі. Зокрема, у спринті на 200 метрів виборола “бронзу” (10,670) та “золото” в гіті на 500 метрів (33, 210).

Акробатична Гімнастика: Чемпіонат світу в Баку У столиці Азербайджану Баку 17–18 листопада відбувся Чемпіонат світу з акробатичної гімнастики FIG. Протягом двох днів спортсмени з усієї Європи змагались в одній з найцікавіших та захоплюючих спортивних дисциплін у таких категоріях: чоловічі та жіночі пари, чоловічі та жіночі групи та змішані пари. Наш край представляли Юлія Пилип´як та Олександра-Марія Табачинська, які повернулись додому зі срібними медалями за виступ у категорії жіночих пар. Вітаємо наших дівчат і зичимо успіхів їм та їх тренерам у наступному сезоні!

Leopolitan archer Veronika Marchenko was named November’s Athlete of the Month for her performance at the first-ever World Military Championships in Tehran, Iran last month. The world’s No. 41-ranked archer took bronze in the women’s individual recurve event. Congratulations to Ms. Marchenko on her continued remarkable achievements!

Львівська лучниця Вероніка Марченко була визнана спортсменкою місяця в листопаді. Це звання Вероніка здобула завдяки успішному виступу на чемпіонаті світу серед військовослужбовців зі стрільби з лука, який відбувся з 11 до 16 листопада 2018 року в м. Тегеран (Ісламська Республіка Іран). На цьому чемпіонаті Марченко виборола бронзову нагороду в особистому заліку зі стрільби з лука. Вітаємо Вероніку і бажаємо нових спортивних звершень.

TARGETING TOURISM AND THE IT INDUSTRY Following the 2014–15 financial crisis in Ukraine, prices for apartments in Lviv’s Old Town fell to the levels not seen since the early 2000s. They have remained close to these levels for the past two years or so. This means that available per square meter purchase prices are now quite low (sometimes less than USD 1000 per square meter for fixer-uppers), but these prices are not sufficiently low enough to offer attractive current yields for investors who are considering buying and renovating properties to offer as long-term rentals. So what investment strategies should property investors deploy in Lviv? The city’s tourism and IT sectors are currently growing exponentially and therein lies the answer. Indeed, on 26 November 2018, the Parliament of Ukraine approved the Presidential Decree on imposition of martial law, but its term is limited to 30 days. Decree provides possibility of the temporary limitations of certain constitutional rights and freedoms, but only to the required extent and in case of further escalation of the situation in the East. At this stage, no limitations are effective and there are also no restrictions on economic activity, trade or currency limitation, the banking system remains stable and business proceeds with its operations in the normal mode.

As your question concerns force majeure hereby I would like to provide you with a better understanding of such term and its practical application, as unfortunately such clauses usually remain without proper attention of the parties. In a very simplified meaning force majeure is explained as an irresistible force causing impossibility to fulfill the contract beyond the control of the parties. And yes, usually military actions or even military law and outgoing legal and actual consequences of such might be recognized as the conditions for (a) extension of the obligations’ fulfilment and (b) ground for release from the penalties.

Force majeure circumstances shall be usually confirmed by the certificate issued by the regional chambers of commerce upon the application of the suffered party. Such application shall be accompanied with the contract and evidence confirming the existence of the circumstances deemed to be force majeure. Important – the applicant also shall provide reasonable explanation of the casual link between such circumstances and breach of respective contractual obligations. Normally, such circumstances as economic crisis, currency devaluation, breach the parties’ suppliers obligations, absence of the raw materials – shall not be recognized as the force majeure. To clarify – if relevant obligations were supposed to be fulfilled before such irresistible force has arisen or there are no actual link between such circumstances and particular breach – such contractual default shall not be recognized as a force majeure and, correspondingly, shall not release the breaching party from its obligations. Therefore, the temporary introduction of martial law cannot serve as an automatic reason for non-fulfillment of contractual obligations – the causal link is necessary between nonperformance under an agreement and the introduction of martial law, confirmed by a CCI certificate in each particular case. 2011–2017

Or maybe it was on the radio – after all, it was one of the Top 10 most-streamed Christmas songs in the USA last year. Perhaps you even know that it was composed by a Ukrainian patriot – Mykola Leontovych. But do you know the story behind the song is filled with murder, betrayal, and a fight for independence? The haunting Christmas hit we all know and love today has a Hollywoodworthy history, so keep reading to find out more.

THE MAKING OF AN ICONIC CAROL

While Leontovych arranged the well-known musical version of the song we know today, he based it off a traditional folk chant that supposedly predates Christianity. Known as ‘Shchedryk’ (Bountiful Evening), the Ukrainian lyrics tell of a swallow that flies into a house and sings of the wealth and prosperity that is coming. The song heralds the rebirth of earth and the coming of spring, which is why it’s sung at New Year’s in Ukraine – not Christmas. Don’t worry – if you make the mistake of singing it too early while caroling or on a ‘Vertep’, your hosts will be sure to remind you of it. The song’s popularity has lent the title for a word denoting any New Year’s carol in Ukraine: ‘shchedrivky’. The song found international popularity early on when performed by the Ukrainian National Chorus to a sold-out Carnegie Hall in New York in 1921. English lyrics were added by NBC’s Peter Wilhousky in 1936 and the song became a staple of holiday advertising. There have been over 150 arrangements of the tune in the last decade alone in virtually every musical style, from metal to swing to hip hop to Celtic (see below for a great sampling). It remains one of the Christmas season’s most enduring carols.

MUSICAL PATRIOTISM What most people don’t know about the genesis of the tune is that is was composed during a time of great upheaval in Ukraine. When he first started composing his mega hit, Leontovych had been sent back to his home oblast of Vinnytsia for supporting workers during the 1905 Russian Revolution. It was there that the conductor of the Ukrainian Republic Choir (Oleksandr Koshyts) asked him to create a song based on Ukrainian folk music. Shchedryk was first played at the Kyiv University in 1916 to great acclaim, making Leontovych a well-known figure when the Ukrainian People’s Republic was proclaimed just six months later. During the short period of time of Ukraine’s early independence, Leontovych was instrumental in helping form Ukrainian cultural entities such as the Ukrainian State Orchestra and the Ukrainian National Chorus (the same that would later popularise the hit internationally) to promote Ukrainian culture abroad. This made him a target when the Bolsheviks retook Kyiv in 1919.

MURDER & BETRAYAL Leontovych was forced to leave Kyiv and move back to his home oblast of Vinnytsia. There he founded the first music school in Tulchyn and began work on his first opera. He worried about his security and even had papers to stay in Romania while touring abroad with the Ukrainian National Chorus. He decided to spend Christmas Day 1921 (the Orthodox holiday of the Feast of the Nativity) with his family and a colleague, an undercover Chekist (Soviet State Security) officer named Afanasy Grishchenko. After the celebrations, Grishchenko was invited to stay over and share a room with Leontovych. The officer shot Leontovych at dawn, robbing his family and leaving the composer to die of blood loss a few hours later. The man paid with his life to promote Ukrainian culture abroad, making him one of Ukraine’s earliest patriots and martyrs. Lee Reaney
