s Ukraine continues its pivot towards Europe, it only makes sense that the country’s most European city leads the way when it comes to attracting business. Every month sees innovative platforms designed to attract new businesses or showcase exciting startups. At the same time, the Lviv Region is carving out new business arenas of which to become leaders in Ukraine, from IT to alternative energy to automotive assembly. for companies like Mercedes-Benz and Skoda. This comes on the heels of the 32 million EUR ElectroContact Ukraine (subsidiary of Nexans) plant that opened in August. The plant – which is the largest that the company operates – produces cable products for BMWs and employs 1,500 Ukrainians, with an additional 1,000 to be hired when stage two is finished.

Lviv companies make a splash in Europe At the same time as European companies are moving to the Lviv region to take advantage of the business climate, Lviv’s own companies are making waves in Europe. At last month’s IT Arena Forum, a number of Lviv’s startups were recognised for their excellence. Some of the companies creating the biggest buzz include the award-winning Docsify, a tool to assist marketers and salespeople; IRAengine, an AI-assisted alternative marketplace for marketing and sales calls; and Senstone, a stylish pendant voice recorder that allows you to capture, search, and sort your thoughts, and has already collected over $300,000 USD from nearly 2,750 people. World-class brands continue to choose Lviv Of course, these companies are joining some other more established international brands already located in Lviv. Among the firms that have been ‘in the know’ about Lviv’s business climate for some time is Nestle, the largest food company in the world. Nestle opened its largest business centre in the world in the Western Ukrainian capital in 2011, and now employs over 800 Leopolitans. Another is SoftServe, a Ukrainian IT company that operates in seven countries. One of Ukraine’s top IT employers, it operates a development centre in what is fast becoming Ukraine’s very own Silicon Valley. JAZZ BEZ IS BACK! December 1–10 at Dzyga Club (35 Virmenska St.) and venues around the city Each December, Lviv lights up with the sound of jazz, as an international array of talented musicians converge on the Western Ukrainian capital for Jazz Bez. Lviv’s annual Jazz Bez festival is among the biggest in Eastern Europe, as it opens up new horizons each year and unites music lovers from around the world. This year, the festival will unite the Ukrainian cities of Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lutsk, Rivne, Ternopil, and Uzhhorod with the Polish cities of Bialystok, Lublin, Przemysl, Warsaw,

and Wroclaw. The festival will also return to the Ukrainian communities of Drohobych and Kramatorsk. On top of that, the series of concerts dedicated to 20th Century Ukrainian poet Bohdan Ihor Antonych will return to the Polish village of Nowica. This year’s festival will see 87 concerts performed by 60 musicians from Ukraine, Europe, North America, and – for the first time at Jazz bez – Australia! Turner, whose contributions to jazz are compared to John Coltrane. THE "HIGH CASTLE" AUTUMN ART SALON November 5 – December 3 at Lviv Art Palace (17 Kopernika St.) Art lovers are spoiled for choice in Lviv. LES PODERVIANSKYI. ALL THE BEST SELECTED WORKS December 12 at 19:00 at the Malevich Night Club & Concert Arena (2 Chornovola Ave.) Lviv’s Malevich Night Club hotspot is pleased to present Ukrainian poet, playwright, and performer Les Podervianskyi, whose witty performances are sure to both challenge and delight Leopolitans and guests of the city, on 12 December. Podervyanskyi is a spectacular example of how aesthetic nonconformity spiced with a sharp sense of humor can result in national recognition. He is most famous for his absurd, highly satirical, and at times politically incorrect and obscene plays. With a few exceptions, most of his works are no longer than 15 minutes and highly regarded for their attention to detail. Many behavioral modes are easily recognizable, and people will be able to see themselves in his plays. The general absurdity of the situations make the characters’ bizarre actions more acceptable, and although some lines may not exactly be PC, his humor is generally neutral. LVIV’S PIKKARDIJSKA TERCIA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS! December 3 at 17:00 and 20:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Lviv’s magnificent Opera & Ballet Theatre will host two very special concerts by Ukraine’s most famous a capella ensemble – Pikkardijska Tercia – on 3 December. Hailing from Lviv, this group of six very talented singers are celebrating their 25th anniversary with two shows for their hometown fans. Pikkardijska Tercia is as unique as its name, which translates to ‘Picardian Chord’. Originally a quartet when they formed in 1992, the group originally sang ancient and folk Ukrainian songs. The quartet grew to a sextet that amassed an enviable repertoire of more than 300 classical, liturgical, folk, and original songs. The group has released 15 albums, including its latest, Lety (Fly), just last month. More recently, the group’s signature tune has become Plyve Kacha (The Duck Swims), a metaphorical piece about a mother’s conversation with her son, who has died in war. The song became a requiem of sorts for those that had died fighting for Ukraine’s sovereignty after they sang it to a crowd of one million strong on Kyiv’s main square during the Euromaidan. Kind of like Russia’s Rolling Stones, Mashina Vremeni is the oldest and most famous Russian rock group, continually performing since their formation in 1969. They were the first to sing rock in Russian and popularized the music in the Soviet Union. Their song ‘Povorot’ (The Turn) topped the very first Soviet chart in 1979, while their 1984 hit ‘Muzyka Pod Snegom’ (Music Under the Snow) topped the chart for a whopping 17 months! Under perestroika, when the group was permitted to sell LPs, they sold over 18 million copies. They also started Russia’s first independent music label – Sintez Records. Andrey Makarevich, the band’s frontman, became one of Russia’s leading anti-war figures in 2014.

He openly condemned Russia’s occupation of Crimea and gave a concert in government-held Donbas to benefit internally displaced children. His position on the conflict caused him and his group a lot of trouble. State-controlled TV labeled him a traitor and his concerts were cancelled by authorities. Now, most of Mashina Vremina’s concerts take place abroad, all over the world. In Lviv, the band will perform their greatest hits alongside songs from their newest concert program. DESIRE BY HURTS: AN ALBUM OF PASSION, PAIN, AND LUST November 22 at 19:00 at SKA Stadium (39A Kleparivska St.) With a brand new set-list based on their latest album ‘Desire’, the Manchester-based duo Hurts will perform at Lviv’s SKA Velotrack on 22 November. Formed in 2009 by singer Theo Hutchcraft and multi-instrumentalist Adam Anderson, this British synthpop duo have fallen in love with Ukraine, and Lviv in particular. They released their fourth studio album in late September and have enjoyed heavy radio play for their first single ‘Beautiful Ones’. The success of the song has fans believing that several more hits will join the likes of ‘Wonderful Life’, ‘Some Kind of Heaven’, and ‘Nothing Bigger Than Us’. The

band’s signatures are a classy, old-fashioned type of tune that would fit in better in the ‘80s than now. Lviv’s sparkling new Metropolitan A. Sheptytsky Centre will play host on 25 November to the Lviv Mini Maker Fair, a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness. Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new and unique, the Maker Fair is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts – crafters, educators, tinkerers, engineers, science clubs, and artists. A celebration of the ‘Maker’ movement, all of these ‘makers’ will come to the Maker Fair to show what they’ve made and share what they’ve learned. The festival is designed to showcase makers that are exploring new forms and technologies, but it’s not just for technical fields; the Maker Fair will feature innovation and experimentation across the spectrum of science, engineering, art, performance, and craft. It is the only platform for makers to show examples of their works and interact with others about it. EBEC CHALLENGE LVIV November 27 – December 1 at Lviv Polytechnic National University (12 S. Bandery St.) The international student organisation BEST will hold the annual EBEC Challenge, a European engineering competition, at Lviv’s Polytechnic National University from 27 November to 1 December. Supported by the students’ union, students from polytechnic universities will have the chance to showcase their knowledge and skills in a series of engineering competitions. In Team Design, students will model and construct technical structures, with a further results demonstration, while the Case Study will focus on solving analytical problems, researching a particular object, problem, or process, and presenting a strategic action model for their particular case. The EBEC Challenge is one of BEST’s core services in their efforts to provide complementary education. During the competition, active and inquisitive students will challenge themselves, broaden their horizons, and develop their creativity and communication skills. Being fundamental elements of the competition, EBEC contributes to the support and advancement of technological education, as well as the promotion of collaborating within a multicultural environment. EUROPA LEAGUE: ZORYA LUHANSK TO HOST ATLETICO BILBAO December 7th at 22:05, Arena Lviv Stadium (199 Stryiska Str.) Lviv’s adopted footballers from the East, Zorya Luhansk, will welcome Spanish outfit Atletico Bilbao to Arena Lviv on 7 December in the final game of Europa League Group J qualifying. The results see them sit in second on 6 points, behind Sweden’s Ostersund (7), and ahead of Spain’s Atletico Bilbao (5), and Hertha BSC (4), with just two games left to gain entry into the lucrative Europa League playoffs. In their first game against Atletico, in Spain in September, Zorya took full advantage of a 26th minute strike by midfielder Ihor Kharatin to gain the valuable three away points. The team will likely need to replicate that result in the return affair, as the match will likely determine which team qualifies for the playoffs, and which does not. Sheptytsky Centre will host the Lviv Security Forum – an event featuring high-level discussions on Ukrainian and European current affairs – from 30 November to 1 December. The discussions will focus on regional conflict resolution, economic and energy security, illegal migration, organised crime, refugees, border management, corruption, terrorism, human trafficking, and conventional weapons proliferation. It is expected to be one of the region’s foremost platforms for regional and global organisation representatives to discuss solutions to European security issues alongside government and independent experts. It will bring together top policy leaders – respected politicians, journalists,

and academics – to exchange views on European security. The event aims to increase security cooperation among Ukraine and its EU partners, as well as to raise awareness of regional developments among key regional players. Speakers are set to include: Glen Hovard, President of the Jamestown Foundation; Sven Sakkov, Director of the International Centre for Defence & Security (Estonia); Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, Commander of the NATO Allied Land Command; Stephan Bierling, Professor of International Policy and Transatlantic Relations at Ragensburg University (Germany); and Jill Sinclair, Senior Advisor at the Department of National Defence. HELMFON A Cleverly-Designed Privacy Helmet W

ith so many tech gadgets, media devices, and interactive tools veering us off-track, it’s really no surprise that workplace productivity has been rapidly dwindling. A portmanteau of the words ‘helmet’ and ‘phone’, the Helmfon is capable of streaming videos, viewing/editing photos, answering/making calls, and hosting Skype conferences. It gives users access to all-things-multimedia while keeping distractions to a minimum. It even has a carved out a spot for your smartphone, in case you need to make a private call while wearing it. If there’s any concern about wearing the headwear for extended periods, you can mount it on the wall, the ceiling, or wear it on your shoulders. LVIV SOCIETY LVIV’S 17TH INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC FORUM Lviv’s 17th International Economic Forum attracted more than 1,000 participants – state and regional government representatives, investors, business leaders, diplomats, and representatives from international institutions, business associations, and banks – to the Western Ukrainian capital from 26-27 October. Two new alternative energy projects in the Lviv oblast were announced: a solar power plant in Yavoriv district, and a wind power plant in the Starosambirsky district. With the opening of these facilities, as well as two more that are planned by the end of the year, the Lviv region will be able to meet its electricity needs. Also, within the forum’s program, the opening of Bader-Aunde’s new car seat cover plant was launched in the Yavoriv district (Lviv oblast). The new plant is a joint project of German investors Bader GmbH, which has two leather car seat cover plants elsewhere in the Lviv oblast (Kozhychi and Horodok), and the Aunde Company. The Bader plant sews leather car seat covers at two sites, while Aunde’s core business is textile car seat covers. Their new plant will allow the production of combined covers that will allow them to produce seats for companies like Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) and Skoda. The companies have already invested over 10 million EUR.

17-Й МІЖНАРОДНИЙ ЕКОНОМІЧНИЙ ФОРУМ На 17 львівському Міжнародному економічному форумі, що пройшов 26–27 жовтня, зареєструвалось понад 1000 учасників – представників державних та регіональних органів влади, інвесторів, бізнес-лідерів, дипломатів та представників міжнародних організацій, ділових асоціацій і банків. Тут було оголошено про запуск двох нових проектів альтернативної енергетики у Львівській області: сонячної електростанції у Яворівському районі та вітрової – у Старосамбірському. З введенням в експлуатацію цих важливих об'єктів, а також ще двох, які плануються до кінця року, Львівська область зможе задовольнити свої потреби в електроенергії. Також в рамках програми форуму

відбулось відкриття нової фабрики Bader-Aunde з виготовлення обшивки автомобільних сидінь у Яворівському районі. Це спільний проект німецького інвестора Bader GmbH, який вже має два подібні підприємства у Львівській області (Кожичі та Городок) та компанії Aunde. Завод Bader виготовляє шкіряні крісла на двох підприємствах, а основним напрямком діяльності фірми Aunde є виготовлення текстильної обшивки автомобільних сидінь. Їх нова спільна фабрика буде виготовляти комбіновані обшивки для таких відомих компаній, як Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) і Skoda. Для розвитку виробництва компанії вже інвестували в проект понад 10 мільйонів євро.

LVIV TO ITALY BY ERNEST AIRLINES Ernest Airlines, a small Italian airline headquartered in Milan, launched a Lviv – Bergamo flight in October. Beginning 8 December, they will be launching two additional routes from Lviv – to Napoli and to Venice. See the schedules below. All flights are offered twice weekly – on Fridays and Sundays – and take two hours, 50 minutes en route. One way fares start at 50 EUR, with return fares for about 100 EUR. Hand luggage of up to 10 kg is included in the price.

INDIAN CULTURE DAYS IN LVIV Lviv’s International Society of Ukrainian-Indian Friendship held the Indian Culture Days cultural festival from 20–25 October. The event featured a festive opening ceremony at Lviv’s magnificent House of Scientists that attracted Indian Ambassador Manoj Bharti, Lviv Regional Administration Head Oleh Synyutka, and other officials. Lviv’s Philharmonic Theatre played an Indian music concert as part of the program, while other events included Indian movie screenings, yoga workshops, jolly flash-mobs, and an extravagant ‘Indian Party’ at the Malevich Night Club. Hryshevsky Cinema Jazz also hosted an event by Ambassador Bharti – the ‘Presentation of India’ – that featured screenings of some of the finest contemporary Indian films.

2017 POLISH CINEMA FESTIVAL "UNDER THE HIGH CASTLE" The ‘Under the High Castle’ Polish cinema festival was held in Lviv for the sixth time from 6-15 October. Organised by the General Consulate in Lviv together with the Polish Institute of Cinematic Art, the festival aims to promote Polish film, as well as the general history and culture of Ukraine’s neighbour to the west. The festival featured 28 film screenings, which were well-attended thanks to the symbolic ticket price of just 30 UAH, as well as many supporting events, including panel discussions, lessons on the history of cinema, photo exhibitions, and book presentations. Leopolitan cinema lovers and guests of the city had the wonderful chance to meet some of the biggest names in Polish cinema, including actor Jan Banas, writer Zofia Turowska, and director Janusz Majewski. One of the most anticipated screenings was the premiere of ‘Dwie Korony’ (Two Kings), starring Adam Woronowicz and directed by Michal Kondrat. The movie tells the story of Maximilian Maria Kolbe, a Polish Franciscan friar that volunteered to die in the place of a stranger at the German death camp in Auschwitz. Other popular screenings included the film retrospective of Juliusz Machulski, the Polish actor, director, and screenwriter famed for his communist-era comedies. A special delight for festivalgoers was the ‘Mozart is alive!’ comedy cabaret performed by the MozART string quartet.

ФЕСТИВАЛЬ ПОЛЬСЬКОГО КІНО "ПІД ВИСОКИМ ЗАМКОМ" Фестиваль польського кіно "Під Високим замком" вже вшосте пройшов у Львові з 6 по 15 жовтня. Ця подія була організована Генеральним консульством Польщі у Львові спільно з Польським інститутом кінематографії; її метою є пропаганда польського фільму, загальної історії та культури західного сусіда України. У програмі було 28 показів кінострічок та багато супутніх заходів – круглих столів, лекцій з історії кіно, фотовиставок та презентацій книг. Любителі кіно та гості міста мали чудову нагоду познайомитись з найвідомішими фігурами сучасного польського кіно як от актором Яном Банасєм, письменницєю Зофією Туровською та режисером Янушем Маєвським. Одним з найбільш очікуваних показів була прем'єра фільму "Дві корони" (у головній ролі – Адам Ворович, режисер Міхал Кондрат). Фільм розповідає про Максиміліана Марію Кольбе, польського монаха-францисканця, який добровільно пішов на смерть замість незнайомця в німецькому таборі смерті в Освенцімі. Серед інших подій фестивалю, зокрема, ретроспектива фільмів польського актора, режисера, сценариста Юліуша Махульського, відомого своїми комедіями комуністичної епохи. Особливо публіці сподобались виступи комедійного кабаре "Моцарт живий!" у виконанні струнного квартету "MozART".

99TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF WEST UKRAINIAN PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC On November 5th Lviv marked 99th anniversary of the establishment of West Ukrainian People's Republic. To mark this glorious event more than 60 re-enactors of local public union “Association of the search of war victims “Memory”” together with representatives of “Chest y Slava” (Honor and Dignity) club from Vinnytsia, put on uniforms of Ukrainian Galician Army, Free Cossacks, Haidamaky regiment of UNR and Polish soldiers in front of the City Council as well as in the “Na Valah” park conducted theatrical military-historical performance “Battle for the capital – Lviv”. Performance featured historical events of November 1918. After the performance all participants with military equipment of the past, marched through central part of the city accompanied by orchestra of the Lviv State University of Life Safety, which well- known Sich Riflemen songs and familiar tunes.

З цієї нагоди понад 60 реконструкторів львівської громадської організації “Товариство пошуку жертв війни “Пам’ять”” та вінницького клубу “Честь і Слава” у формі Української Галицької армії, вільного козацтва, Гайдамацького полку армії УНР та польських військовиків перед міською Ратушею та у сквері “На Валах” провели театралізоване військово-історичне дійство “Бої за столицю – Львів”. Було відтворено листопадові події 1918 року. Після проголошення Акту створення ЗУНР, реконструктори з військовою технікою тих часів пройшлися центральними вулицями міста у супроводі оркестру Львівського державного університету безпеки життєдіяльності, що виконував відомі стрілецькі пісні та марші. HALF MARATHON GRAND PRIX LVIV The annual Lviv Grand Prix Half Marathon raced through the city on 29 October. Mayor Andriy Sadovyi greeted the 2,000+ runners that included many celebrities. Some of the more famous runners included singer and composer Bria Blessing, 1+1 presenter Solomiya Vitvitska, BarvyProject Band soloist Oksana Stebelska, TV Presenter of the ‘TSN. Morning’, at 1+1 TV channel Svyatoslav Hrynchuk, and many others. In addition to the main 21 km race, there was also a 21 km relay, and races at distances of 10, 5, and 2 km. Each runner that completed the 21 km course received a medal to commemorate this exhilarating experience. Half of the money raised by entrants of the 2 km race was donated to the needs of ATO veteran Olha Tarasevych, who lost her leg due to a severe injury near Avdiivka and needs prosthesis. The Lviv Grand Prix Half Marathon was the final part of the 2017 Run Ukraine running league, which also featured races in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Odesa.

ПІВМАРАФОН GRAND PRIX LVIV Щорічний львівський півмарафон Гран-прі відбувся у нашому місті 29 жовтня. Міський голова Андрій Садовий привітав понад 2000 бігунів, серед яких було багато знаменитостей, зокрема – співачка та композитор Брія Блессінг, ведуча програми ТСН, журналіст телеканалу 1+1 Соломія Вітвицька, солістка BarvyProject Band Оксана Стебельска, ведучий ТСН. Ранок на каналі 1+1 Святослав Гринчук та багато інших. Окрім основної дистанції 21 км, відбулась також естафета на 21 км, і забіги на дистанціях 10, 5 і 2 км. Кожен бігун, який завершив трасу 21 км, отримав медаль на пам'ять про участь у змаганнях. Половина грошей, зібраних учасниками забігу на 2 кілометри, була передана на допомогу ветерану АТО Ользі Тарасевич, яка втратила ногу через важку травму під Авдіївкою та потребує протезування. Цей осінній півмарафон став завершальною частиною змагань української бігової ліги 2017 року, в рамках яких також відбулись масові забіги у Києві, Дніпрі та Одесі. LVIV TODAY | November 2017

Lviv rolled out the red carpet for the glamorous Lviv Fashion Week – Spring / Summer 2018 collections last month. Traditionally hosted at Lviv’s D. Halytskyi International Airport, this season’s event added some new and intriguing locations – the Metropolitan A. Sheptytsky Centre and the Machine Hall at Lviv Polytechnic National University. Several fashion projects aimed at a younger audiences were also launched during LFW. They featured young and talented Ukrainian designers like Burdo, Lyubasha Kyleshko, KartNatel, and Vladyslava Matiyashek. As always, there were a number of featured lectures, workshops, and fashion-related discussions over the week. Other LFW events included a special fashion show by leading Ukrainian designer Roksolana Bogutska at the Mirotel Resort&Spa in Truskavets on 4 November and an exhibition of works by legendary Italian designer Gianni Versace. Every Versace piece on display is part of the private collection of Brazilian visual artist Alexandre Stefani. Mr. Stefani collected Versace pieces for more than a quarter century.

Минулого місяця у Львові відбувся гламурний Тиждень моди – весна/літо 2018. До вже традиційного місця проведення показів – Львівського міжнародного аеропорту ім. Д. Галицького, у цьому сезоні додались нові та інтригуючи локації – Центр митрополита А. Шептицького та машинний зал Національного університету "Львівська політехніка". В рамках Тижня моди також було запущено декілька модних проектів, орієнтованих на молодшу аудиторію. Серед них були молоді талановиті українські дизайнери, як от Бурдо, Любаша Килешко, KartNatel та Владислава Матіяшек. Як завжди, на Тижні моди було представлено багато цікавих лекцій, майстеркласів та дискусій на теми моди. Серед інших заходів Тижня моди – спеціальний показ мод провідного українського дизайнера Роксолани Богуцької 4 листопада в курортному комплексі "Міротель", що у Трускавці та виставка робіт легендарного італійського дизайнера Джанні Версаче. Кожен предмет від Версаче у експозиції є частиною приватної колекції бразильського колекціонера Александра Стефані, котру він збирав понад чверть століття.

o you remember the Druzhba cinema in the B. Khmelnitskyi Park of Leisure & Culture? The favourable venue location allowed

visitors to combine a stroll in the park with a night out at the movies.

The cinema ceased operations in the ‘80s along with many other ruined buildings in the park. The premises laid abandoned, waiting for someone to come along and restore their former glory. CHIEF ARCHITECT MARKO SAVYTSKYI, FOUNDER OF THE “SAVYTSKYYDESIGN” STUDIO:

It was Leopolitan TARAS KOLODIY that took up the initiative. Founder of the Akurat group, which operates Lviv restaurants like ‘Hrushevsky’, ‘Honest Meat’, and the award-winning ‘Virmenka’ coffeehouse, as well as the ‘Modern’ art-hotel and ‘Tinctures from Lviv’ shops, Kolodiy restored the cinema premises into a leisure complex called ‘Park: Art of Rest’. This spectacular location features two spacious halls for up to 500 people, which will play host for free of charge film screenings and will provide a sensational view of the park’s greenery. Lviv Today spoke to the team of professionals who, alongside Kolodiy, brought to life this grand project.

“While working on the project, we tried to consider not just the business requirements, but also the necessity to create a leisure space for Leopolitans and guests of the city. Given the parameters of the existing building, we managed to expand the premises by vertical partition, which allowed us to place two spacious halls for cultural events like film screenings, music festivals, exhibitions, and festive celebrations! The simple and laconic lines of the building’s foreside were amplified by using natural materials, like slate, wood, and glass. In my opinion, a building should integrate into the natural environment of the park as much as possible!”

| Що правильніше і ефективніше: бути для клієнта | виконавцем замовлення чи вибудовувати свої | стосунки з ним, як з бізнес-партнером? Часто трапляється так, що замовник не знає, як організувати процес і чим наповнити захід, щоби він став креативним, завчасно підготовленим і продуманим до дрібниць. Саме тому при отриманні замовлення ми максимально занурюємось у тонкощі проекту, створюємо його творчу концепцію та сценарій, пропонуємо оригінальні елементи наповнення та абсолютно прозоро формуємо бюджет. Слід також розуміти, що замовник зазвичай зайнятий програмною частиною заходу (виступи спікерів, урочисті промови), спілкуванням із аудиторію або здійсненням інших представницьких функцій. В нього немає часу на контроль за процесами по івенту, та й взагалі, це не його клопіт. Саме тому безпосередню організацію івенту треба забрати від клієнта і віддати в руки спеціалістів. А це на мою думку ніщо інше, як бізнес-партнерство.

| Як втримати клієнта та стати | івент компанією, яку обиратимуть відразу, | не порівнюючи з іншими?

Це головне питання для нас, тому я би зауважив декілька моментів. По-перше: професійна презентація можливостей компанії. Необхідно показати потенційному клієнту конкретні приклади реалізованих проектів, бажано у форматі відеозвіту. До цього слід максимально розкрити потенційну користь та переваги компанії у випадку співпраці саме з нами. По-друге: професійний підхід, пунктуальність та креативна складова мають супроводжувати процес на усіх етапах комунікації із клієнтом. Помилки та затримки є неприпустимими у цій справі, оскільки вони можуть породити переживання стосовно подальшої співпрації із вами. І основне: перший захід для клієнта має відбутись бездоганно, замовник та його гості (учасники, працівники компанії, його клієнти) мають бути в захваті від проробленої роботи. І тільки тоді у івент компанії з’являється шанс, що клієнт знову звернеться до неї.

| Які особисті та професійні якості потрібні | організатору подій, щоб успішно конкурувати | в сучасних умовах? Яким повинен бути | ідеальний івент-менеджер? Івент-менеджер – насправді складна професія, оскільки гостро потребує гармонічного поєднання аналітичного та творчого складу розуму аби педантично та без помилок прорахувати бюджет і написати яскравий сценарій під конкретну аудиторію. У цій професії виживають гіпервідповідальні перфекціоністи із безмежною витримкою. І саме виживають, оскільки інтенсивний режим роботи з мінімумом сну та їжі не кожному характеру під силу. Нажаль, цій роботі не вчать у вищій школі, навички і досвід можна отримати лише на практиці.

| Як Ви оцінюєте стан справ на ринку | івент-послуг в Україні й у Львові зокрема? Можу впевнено сказати, івент-індустрія однозначно розвивається. Про це говорить кількість заходів, котрі проводяться як у Західному регіоні, так і в Україні загалом. Тішить те, що замовники все LVIV TODAY | November 2017

LVIV INTERVIEW більше розуміють особливості роботи івент компанії, ми стали отримувати більше деталізованих технічних завдань, де клієнт конкретизує очікуваний результат, що значно скорочує час на уточнення деталей. В цілому можу сказати, що послуги з організації заходів досить затребувані в нашій країні. Особливо росте кількість креативних фестивалів, що впливають на розвиток культури та заходи, котрі допомагають розвиватись молодому бізнесу. Звісно, у Києві це розвивається значно швидше ніж у Львові, але ми віримо, що незабаром доростемо до рівня столиці як по кількості, так і по якості таких заходів.

| Чи можна стверджувати, що львівський | (український) івент-ринок розвивається | стихійно? Які труднощі виникають через це? | І як їх долати? Івент – це синтез професії та мистецтва, і очевидно, що на ринку івент-послуг з’являється безліч учасників, частина котрих не надто професійно виконує свої замовлення. З цим виникають проблеми, оскільки потенційні замовники не надто охоче довіряють організацію подій будь-кому у майбутньому. Цю проблему треба вирішувати двома шляхами. З одного боку людей треба вчити, готувати молодих спеціалістів та контролювати якість виконання замовлень. З іншого боку самим клієнтам у першу чергу потрібно обирати надійні івент компанії, котрі мають належний досвід з організації відповідного роду заходів. У нашому досвіді усі наші проекти переросли у надійне та тривале партнерство із замовником. Я вважаю це успіхом.

| Як ви вважаєте, що очікує сферу | івент-менеджменту в майбутньому? Сфера івент індустрії на даному етапі розвитку дуже потребує ідентифікації як самостійної галузі. Перспективи справді великі. Ми плануємо провести флагманський форум, а саме Event Industry Forum, котрий об’єднає івент-менеджерів, професіоналів та експертів подієвої індустрії, маркетологів і hr-фахівців, представників і постачальників послуг івент-ринку, а також усіх, хто є частиною івентів, а цих людей дуже і дуже багато! DENYS RYNSKY: In event management, only the patient perfectionist will succeed

he modern event management industry is a universe where contractors and clients live according to their own very specific rules. Each event is truly unique, like a piece of a construction kit where each detail can change everything. To learn about Ukraine’s current event management market, Lviv Today sat down with Global Events founder Denys Rynsky.

| Denys, you’ve worked as a top-level | manager in many big companies – | in entertainment, restaurants, tourism, | and even managing the region’s most | important sports venue, Arena Lviv. | Now you’ve founded Global Events, your own | event management company. How did you | come to this decision and how difficult was it? I’ve been in the event organising business almost my whole life and I understood that this is my calling some 15 years ago. There is maybe nothing more interesting than to develop a creative idea of some sort and bring it to life! So wherever I’ve decided to work was in one way or another connected with the organisation of events – managing multi-event venues, art management, or creating event schedules at multiple locations. So, my decision to open my own company last year was well-considered, balanced, and easy.

| In what spheres do your professional | interests in the industry lie? Without a doubt, I’m most interested in massive projects with a huge range of tasks and a creative concepts. Considering this, Global Events organises major business events and corporate happenings, in addition to festive openings of business and entertainment venues.

| Tell us about the Global Events team. Our team consists of top-notch specialists that are able to organise and conduct an event of any level and scale. They are great event managers, conceptualists, marketing specialists, and

location managers that are able to arrange unforgettable events and provide eventgoers with incredible experiences. These people literally “live” each project and improve their own skills with every event. For us, each event is an occasion that we create; we think over even the smallest details and live through each moment. I think my team is the company’s greatest treasure and I’m very proud of them!

| Can you tell us about the projects that you | are most proud of, both for you personally | and for your Global Events company? Since times when I’ve been working at Arena Lviv I was inspired by such grand projects as “Alfa Jazz Fest” or concerts by “Okean Elzy” band, which were very professionally received and handled by specialists of the stadium under my personal supervision. Today every project for us is unforgettable and has its own place in the life of “Global Events"company. Among the most exciting and memorable projects for us are Lviv IT Arena, the grand opening of the Victoria Gardens mall and Cabinet café & confectionary, the presentation of the new seventh generation of the BMW 5-series at Aria Motors, and the 28th anniversary of Idea Bank, which was awarded with an ‘Idea’s Best Awards 2017’.

| What is more effective – to organise | a successful and orderly event, or to build | a business relationship with a partner? It often happens that the client has little idea of how to organise an event and with what content to fill it in order to make it creative, well-prepared, and precise. project to create an artistic concept and offer original content and a transparent budget. It’s also important to understand that the client is very busy with the formal part of the event, like speeches, communications with eventgoers, and other representative functions. So the client has no time to control the other details of the event’s process and, frankly speaking, it’s not their problem. That’s why the arrangement of the event should be taken from the client and given to the specialist. And that, right there, is the business partnership.

| How do you attract clients and how do you stand | out from other event management company? Those are very important questions for us and I can speak about this for hours. First of all, it is the professional presentation of the company’s scope of activity. It is crucial to show potential clients examples of specific past projects, preferably in the form of a video report. It is necessary to show potential usefulness and the advantages of the company in regards to future cooperation. Secondly, a professional approach, punctuality, and exceptional creativity should be present at all stages of communication with the client. Mistakes and delays are unacceptable in this business as they can bring about doubts in the client concerning future cooperation. And the most important aspect is that the first event must be held flawlessly – the client and eventgoers must be excited about the final product. Only in this case will the company have the chance for future cooperation with the client.

| What personal and professional features | should an event manager possess in order | to be successful and competitive in today’s | industry? Explain an ideal event manager. The event manager is a truly complex profession as it demands the well balanced unity of an analytical and creative mindset in order to calculate the budget thoroughly and write an interesting event script tailored to a specific audience. Only hyper-responsible perfectionists with endless patience can survive in this profession. And this is real survival, as the intensive work schedule with minimal sleep and food is not

for everyone. Regrettably, one can’t learn this profession at school as the skills and experience can only be gained through practice.

| What is your take on the event services market | in Ukraine, and in Lviv in particular? I’m confident that the industry is developing. There is every indication of that, taking into consideration the number of events held in Western Ukraine and the country in general. A good sign is that clients are becoming more familiar with what an event management company does. We are starting to get more technically-detailed orders where clients list expected results, and that helps as it shortens the time we spend on clarifying details. Generally speaking, I can say that event management services are in demand in Ukraine, especially in the growing sectors of creative festivals and small business promotion events. Surely, it’s happening more quickly in Kyiv, but we strongly believe that soon we will reach the same level in both the quantity and the quality of those events.

| Is it fair to say that the local events market | is developing spontaneously? What are some | problems that such development can bring | and how do you go about solving them? Event management is the synthesis of profession and art, and a number of event management providers have

popped up recently, some of which are not very professional at their implementation of orders. That situation causes problems, as potential clients tend to be reluctant to trust other event management providers in the future. There are two ways to handle this problem. On the one hand, it’s important to educate people, prepare young specialists, and monitor the quality of events. On the other, clients should choose and work with trustworthy agencies that are experienced in the organisation of the required event. In my own experience, all of our projects have turned into reliable and long-term partnerships and I consider that a tremendous success.

| In your opinion, where is the event | management field headed? The event management industry at its present stage is in its needs identification stage. The prospects look great! We are planning to conduct a flagship forum, namely an ‘Event Industry Forum’, that will bring together event managers, professionals and experts, marketing specialists, HR specialists, suppliers, and representatives of event marketing services with those in need of such services – and there’s a lot of companies in need of those services! EBA AND INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC FORUM International Economic Forum in Lviv become one of the instrument for creation friendly and open dialogue between business, local authorities and society. At the first Forum’s day, Anton Podilchak, Head of EBA Western Ukrainian Office Regional Coordination Council moderated the panel discussion on ‘Territory without corruption. Lviv region as the standard of openness of local authority’. EBA Community in 2014 announced Zero Tolerance to Corruption initiative and from day to day continue to work on anticorruption initiatives. At the second day, Maryana Lutsyshyn, EBA Western Ukrainian Office Regional Manager, leaded the discussion on export prospects of Lviv region. EBA MONTH IN A SHORT GLANCE EBA AT UKRAINIAN AUTOMOTIVE FORUM European Business Association gladly support the first Ukrainian Automotive Forum hold in October, 31, organized by Strategic Council. Anton Podilchak, the Head of EBA Western Ukrainian Office Regional Coordination Council represented EBA Community as a moderator of the final session concerning financial aspects of automotive market growth. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE WITH CREDIT AGRICOLE In order to discuss the issues of currency regulation and to review the exchange rate forecasts in 2018, on the initiative of Crédit Agricole, managers of Association member companies and invited guests met within the framework of the EBA Lviv Management Committee. The experts of the meeting Oleksandr Pecherytsyn (Credit Agricole), Tetiana Bloshchytska (Credit Agricole) shared the reasons for the growth of dollar and key events in the currency market of Ukraine. Ihor Pikhurko (Hafele) advised how to minimize currency risks for companies, taking into account the seasonality of the courses. Recently the Board of the National Bank of Ukraine (hereinafter – the «NBU») adopted Resolution No. 88 "On Amending Certain Regulatory Acts of the National Bank of Ukraine" (hereinafter – the «Resolution No. 88») and Resolution No. 101 «On Amending Resolution of the Board of the National Bank of Ukraine dated 13 December 2016 No.410» (hereinafter – the «Resolution No. 101»). The Resolution No. 88 introduces the amendments on terms of obtaining the loans by residents from international financial institutions (hereinafter – "IFIs") as follows: • requirement as to the registration with NBU of the loan agreements concluded between residents- borrowers and the lenders – IFIs, of which Ukraine is a member and/or for which provides a relevant legal regime, is canceled; • other persons, performing the residents-borrowers' obligations under the above-mentioned agreements, have the right to purchase (exchange) foreign currency and/or make payments towards the performance of the obligations thereunder without a respective NBU individual license; • from now on, an amount of the loan in such agreements may be also defined, in particular, in UAH, however, all the payments made, and received, by IFIs thereunder shall be made in foreign currency.

EBA THURSDAY TALKS WITH ANTI-CORRUPTION BUREAU This time the participants of EBA Thursday Talks, which took place on 5 October 2017, had an opportunity to meet the Director of Lviv Regional Office of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) Taras Lopushansky and his colleague. Obviously, corruption has always been among the biggest problems on the way of doing business in Ukraine. A lot has been said on this occasion, however there was something more to say! The discussion was alive, saturated and long lasting. Participants were eager to learn about the main functions of the new law enforcement agency, the results of their work and the possibilities of interaction with business. Summing up the meeting, Taras Lopushansky stressed on the need to build qualitative new relationships between society and government bodies, changing their vision of responsibility from both sides. ‘One, even very well organized institution is not enough to fight corruption at the state level. The Resolution No. 101 introduces the following amendments to the Resolution of the Board of the National Bank of Ukraine dated 13 December 2016 No. 410: • non-financial institutions are now permitted to purchase and transfer foreign currency and place it on deposit accounts abroad on the basis individual license issued by the NBU. Prior to such changes only banking institutions-participants of international payment systems were able to conduct such actions. Additionally, with the Resolution No. 102 "On Amending Certain Regulatory Acts of the National Bank of Ukraine" NBU cancelled the obligatory certification of documents (submitted for the currency operations) with a seal. Also the obligatory notarization was cancelled in a range of cases regarding documents which are to be submitted for conducting of currency operations. Nevertheless, requirement for notarization of documents stays if force in cases of certifying documents' (or their copies) translation. All of the abovementioned changes constitute an integral part of currency liberalization course of the NBU. 2011–2016

REVERSE UKRAINE’S BRAIN DRAIN Ukraine can learn from Ireland’s diaspora engagement initiatives and FDI successes

reland’s history shares many similarities with Ukraine. We have also had our famines, foreign imperial rule, struggles for independence, and violent conflict zones. Like Ukraine, Ireland also has a long history of mass emigration. The reversal of this trend in the 1990s helped build Ireland’s famed “Celtic Tiger” economy. As Ukraine seeks ways to stem the flow of citizens seeking opportunities abroad, Ireland’s experience may offer useful insights that could help reverse the current brain drain threatening Ukraine’s future prosperity. The Republic of Ireland today has a population of 4.6 million, a GDP of USD 294 billion, and Europe’s fastest growing economy. It is the fifth most competitive country in the OECD, and number one in the Eurozone. From an innovation perspective, Ireland has a strong national research ecosystem, with 14 designated priority areas for government funding in research and investment. Ireland ranks tenth out of 127 countries in the 2017 Global Innovation Index. Ukraine can learn from Ireland’s success in a number of areas.

A critical factor in developing Ireland’s economy was to create quality investment and employment opportunities beyond the capital city and largest population hubs. Ireland has the youngest workforce in Europe. Around 35% of employees are under 25 years of age. Ireland’s investment in education typically far exceeds EU averages. European Commission studies have cited Ireland as producing “the most highly employable graduates in the world”. Over the past generation, “Institutes of Technology” have appeared in regional towns across the country. Enterprise Ireland promotes 15 so-called “Technology Gateways” within these technology institutes, which combine academic capability with commercial research to serve the needs of local industry. These Technology

Gateways focus on a specific niche or speciality, thereby helping strategic regional economic clusters to take shape, allowing talent and investment to flourish. Another key feature of these Institutes of Technology is the modest size of the cities in which they reside. Cork City, with a population of 126,000 people, is the hotbed for Ireland’s EUR 30 billion pharmaceutical export sector. Galway, with less than eighty thousand people, is the hub for a EUR 2 billion medical device manufacturing sector. Tralee, with less than twenty five thousand people, hosts Ireland’s dedicated electronic and mechanical technology, along with an IoT and data analytics innovation research centre. Since 2013, these 15 Technology Gateways have helped 900 Irish companies to complete more than 2,000 innovation-based projects. Ireland’s Technology Gateways operate

independently within existing state-owned Technical Institutes. Their example could act as a template to help modernise commercial research within Ukraine’s academic institutions while also helping encourage members of the Ukrainian diaspora to return home to pursue their ambitions. Engaging with the Diaspora

The island of Ireland has a total population just over 6.5 million people, yet the global Irish diaspora numbers 70 million with communities found all over the world. Irish pubs are omnipresent globally. Close on half of all USA presidents claim some degree of Irish ancestry. Even Odesa’s famous Deribasivska Street is named after a man of Irish heritage. Ireland leveraged its diaspora and emigrant communities during the 1990s to help create its legendary “Celtic Tiger” economy.

The government actively encouraged those Irish and their ancestors who had left Ireland to return home to build a new innovation-led economy. Ireland uses tourism, festivals, and international conferences as a means to showcase the country to investors. Ireland also has a dedicated Minister of State with Responsibility for the Diaspora and International Development. Ukraine’s multimillion diaspora could potentially play a similarly important role in Ukraine’s development. One weakness recognised by our new Prime Minister Leo Varadkar is Ireland’s lack of a global diplomatic footprint. He aims to double Ireland’s global diplomatic footprint by 2025. Ironically, Ireland as one of the strongest advocates of the European model, does not currently have an embassy in Ukraine.

IRELAND USES TOURISM, FESTIVALS, AND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES AS A MEANS TO SHOWCASE THE COUNTRY TO INVESTORS. In the meantime, small steps are already being taken to build upon mutually beneficial trade opportunities and friendship between Ireland and Ukraine. In November, Daniel Bilak, director of the Ukraine investment promotion office, UkraineInvest, has been invited to Ireland to speak at a major economic conference. Rapid Chess: Lviv’s Muzychuk Wins European Championship Lviv’s Anna Muzychuk, the reigning rapid & blitz chess world champion, bested 91 of the world’s top chess players to capture the 2017 Women’s European Rapid Chess Championship last month at Monaco’s fabulous Hotel Novotel. Muzychuk scored nine out of an 11 possible points by winning seven games and drawing four. The climax of the gold medal matchup against France’s Pauline Guichard occurred when Anna took the decisive 11th round. The incredible Muzychuk was awarded the Order of Princess Olga in March by President Poroshenko, so now Leopolitans can boast to have their very own Chess Princess in the city. Congratulations once again Anna!

European Track Championships: Ukrainian Cyclists claimed four medals Berlin, Germany was the host of the 2017 UEC European Track Championships last month. In the women’s scratch race, Lviv’s Tetyana Klimchenko won silver, while fellow Leopolitan Roman Gladysh won bronze in the men’s event. Lyubov Basova claimed bronze in the women’s keirin, while Lviv’s Andriy Kutsenko and Volodymyr Buchynskyj, along with Andriy Vinokurov, cycled to a ninth place finish in the team sprint. Overall, Ukrainian cyclists claimed one silver and three bronze medals at the European championships, enough for 11th place in the team standings.

Футбол: Europa League: Zorya Luhansk vs. Hertha BSC The Ukrainian side impressed the nearly 10,000 fans at Arena Lviv when defender Oleksandr Svatok netted in the 79th minute to pull out a 2–1 win. The squad, however, appeared flat in a 2–0 loss in the return affair in Germany. The results see them sit in second on 6 points, behind Sweden’s Ostersund (7), and ahead of Spain’s Atletico Bilbao (5), and Hertha BSC (4), with just two games left to gain entry into the lucrative Europa League playoffs. The team will play on December 7th against Spanish Aletico in Lviv, so let’s wish good luck to the Ukrainian players!

Acrobatic Gymnastics: Ukraine at the European Championships Ukraine sent 23 athletes – eight of which were from Lviv and Drohobych (Lviv region) – to the European Acrobatic Gymnastics championships in Rzeszow, Poland last month. In the men’s quartet – dynamic competition, Lviv’s-own team of Vladyslav Kukurudz, Stanislav Kukurudz, Yuriy Push, and Taras Yarush showed off their strength in traditional acrobatics to take home the bronze medal. In the junior women’s pairs combined exercise event, Ukraine’s Oleksandra-Marija Tabachynska and Yulia Pylypiak (from Drohobych) delighted the crowd with an entertaining routine that was enough to earn them the European title. Congratulations to all the winners!

Перемога “Зорі” над “Гертою” стала свого роду сенсацією в футбольному світі. І хоча в матчі-відповіді луганська "Зоря" поступилася в Німеччині берлінській "Герті", незважаючи на поразку, луганчани залишилися на другому місці в групі, маючи хороші шанси на вихід в плейофф. Побажаємо удачі футболістам в матчах, що залишилися і підтримаємо їх 7 грудня на “Арені Львів” у відповідальному матчі проти “Атлетика" з Більбао.

Акробатична гімнастика: Успіх львів’ян на чемпіонаті Європи На чемпіонаті Європи з акробатичної гімнастики, що пройшов з 16 по 20 жовтня в польському Жешуві, від України виступили 23 спортсмени – восьмеро з яких були зі Львова та Дрогобича. Чоловіча акробатична група у складі Владислава Кукурудза, Станіслава Кукурудза, Юрія Пуша й Тараса Яруша продемонстрували свою силу в традиційній акробатиці й завоювали бронзову медаль. Жіночий дует гімнасток – Олександра-Марія Табачинська та Юлія Пилип'як (Дрогобич) показали унікальну програму і стали чемпіонками Європи-2017 серед юніорок. Вітаємо всіх переможців!

s Ukraine marks the centenary of the country’s WWI-era independence bid, many Ukrainians are becoming acquainted for the first time with the story of this tumultuous period. Throughout the Soviet epoch, all talk of Ukraine’s brief statehood experience was strictly taboo. Even now, relatively few Ukrainians have a detailed grasp of the chaotic events surrounding the attempts to establish an independent Ukraine amid the wreckage of the Tsarist Empire. With historians now at liberty to delve into this relatively unexplored chapter of European history, a clearer picture of Ukraine’s independence struggle is beginning to emerge. This is helping to place today’s hybrid war with Russia in a far broader historical context, while also bringing to light forgotten episodes of a struggle that has been crowded out of official histories by the global implications of the Bolshevik triumph.

One of the more curious footnotes to surface in recent years involves a group of Belgian soldiers who found themselves caught up in the turmoil of the Bolshevik revolution and Ukraine’s independence bid after arriving on the eastern front at the height of WWI. This is their unlikely story.

“PLUCKY LITTLE BELGIUM” In August 1914, Germany declared war on Belgium and German troops invaded the country, sparking outcry across Europe and providing an indignant Britain with justification to enter the fast expanding continental conflict. World War I had begun. The Belgian army finally retreated to the coastal region behind the Yser River, with Belgian troops facing the Germans in opposing trenches. By this point, the first Belgian armoured cars had already seen action in raids behind enemy lines. Later on in 1914, Major Collon, the Belgian Military Attache in Paris, created an autonomous unit of ten armoured cars, assisted by armed cyclists and motorcycle riders. Major Collon was the first commander of this new unit, known by the acronym ACM (Autos-Canons-Mitrailleuses) and counting about 400 members. These volunteer troops were young Belgians, many well educated and drawn from noble Belgian families. All of them were determined to keep on fighting the German invaders of their homeland. During the first months of 1915, they received training around Paris and paraded along the main boulevards of the French capital.

In the late spring of 1915, the ACM troops moved up to the frontlines on the French-Belgian border. However, due to the nature of the trench warfare on the Belgian Front, the unit could not play any military role. The ACM unit stayed in the rear, where its armoured cars caught the eye of the Russian Military Representative posted with the Belgian army general staff. He informed Belgium’s King Albert I, who had taken command of the Belgian army, that the ACM unit might prove useful on the more mobile eastern front. The Russian military command agreed with this view and after negotiations with the Belgian government, the latter decided to send the ACM to the Russian Empire. The unit was thus effectively a gift from the Kingdom of Belgium to Imperial Russia.

JOURNEY TO UKRAINE The ACM men made the journey to the Tsar’s empire on board of an old British cargo ship. It was an exhausting passage marked by heavy storms and a lack of food. By mid-October 1915, they disembarked at the port of Arkhangelsk before finally arriving in Saint Petersburg. The highlight of their stay was a parade at the imperial LVIV TODAY | November 2017

UKRAINE HISTORY residence in Tsarskoye Selo. On that occasion, the last Russian Tsar Nicholas II climbed into a Belgian armoured car to get a closer look at it from the inside. In January 1916, the ACM unit travelled by train to Galicia, in those days an eastern border region of the Austrian Empire and now part of western Ukraine. The Belgians spent the winter in the Galician town of Zbarazh. Meanwhile, the ACM unit experienced a change in command, with founder Major Collon replaced by Major Semet. The unit’s new commander began preparing his men for action with tough military drill. In those days, the Galician Front ran north to south along the River Seret in today’s western Ukraine, with Austrian troops on its west bank and the Russian Imperial army on the eastern side. The Ukrainian city of Ternopil was the most important town behind the Russian lines. By mid1916, the Russian army under General Brusilov was preparing for a major summer offensive in which the ACM Belgians were set to take part. In the summer of 1916, untold thousands of ill-armed Tsarist Imperial troops died on the battlefield as Brusilov’s massive attack unfolded. Although the Belgians enjoyed better protection in their armoured cars, some also died in what was one of the largest and most devastating offensives of the entire war. The first victim was soldier Jacques de Becker, the son of a Belgian baron and senator. He was shot in the head as he attached a cable to an ACM vehicle that had become bogged down on the battlefield. Jacques de Becker received a military funeral in Ternopil. There would soon be other Belgian graves in Ternopil cemetery. In August 1916, the ACM unit spearheaded a fresh Tsarist attack and Belgian armoured cars beat off an Austrian counterattack at Zboriv railway station in today’s Ternopil Oblast. The ACM unit spent the winter of 1916-17 in the Ternopil region. The picture of a lonely Belgian soldier, standing amid barbed wire and looking out over a desolate landscape covered up in snow, perfectly illustrates the feelings of many homesick ACM men at this time. Some filed applications asking for repatriation, but these requests did not meet with approval. Instead, the Belgians had to endure shabby barracks, a lack of fresh food, and endless isolation.

REVOLUTION AND RETREAT Early spring of 1917 brought exciting news. Revolution had broken out in Russia with the Tsarist regime replaced by a provisional government. The Belgians now found themselves confronted with revolutionary changes: Tsarist soldiers refusing to fight any longer and Bolshevik agitators urging them to turn their weapons against the ruling classes. “The red obsession has begun,” an ACM officer noted down in his diary. For the time being, the war against the Austrian and German armies continued with plans for another summer offensive in Galicia. New Russian leader Alexander Kerensky visited the front in the late spring of 1917. When he met the ACM men, he praised them as soldiers of the small Belgian nation that continued the fight against the German enemy. An ACM officer wrote scathingly in his diary, “Magnificent words. But they will soon be forgotten.” The Kerensky Offensive in the summer of 1917 was a complete failure. At the start of July, the ACM Belgians advanced against the enemy. However, disaster soon struck. One group of Belgian armoured cars came under fire from LVIV TODAY | November 2017

Austrian artillery in the village of Konyukhy, leaving the crew killed or badly wounded. Zigzagging along the collapsing Tsarist lines, another armoured ACM group ran into Cossacks engaged in attacks on Jewish villages and brutal executions of traitors. With the Russian imperial army on the run, Ternopil fell to the Germans. The survivors of the ACM unit retreated to new positions in villages east of the western Ukrainian town of Zbarazh. For a few autumn weeks, the Belgians were able to enjoy the picturesque surroundings and take photos of the local population. All this changed drastically when Red October dawned and the Bolsheviks seized power in Petrograd. At this point, the Belgian government finally decided to get the ACM unit out of the revolutionary chaos and the Belgians retreated to Kyiv.

CHAOTIC CAPITAL OF INDEPENDENT UKRAINE The Belgian troops arrived in the Ukrainian capital at a time when it was experiencing the first big upheavals of the country’s independence movement. They would stay in Kyiv until the end of February 1918, witnessing many of the early clashes of an armed struggle for control of Ukraine that would last for several years and see the city change hands more than a dozen times.

in Manchuria and Siberia. By April 1918, the remainder of the ACM unit arrived in Vladivostok, where they boarded an American steamer bound for California. However, their adventure was not yet over. Belgian and American diplomats had decided that the ACM men would make excellent material for war propaganda. These Belgian warriors showed the fighting spirit of “Brave Little Belgium” and thus set a good example for the US public as America sought to bolster its own war effort. Large crowds cheered the ACM men as they marched on parade through various American cities. This military tour began in San Francisco and ended some weeks later in New York. In order to increase the effect of the parade in New York, an impressive American military band was dressed in Belgian uniforms. This band led the march of the ACM Belgians along Fifth Avenue. This military spectacle had the desired effect, with the New York Times reporting: “Vive la Belgique was the cry that greeted the marching Belgians. These brave Belgians looked less like foreign troops than any other allied veterans that have appeared before the American public.”

FORGOTTEN EPIC While in Kyiv, the Belgians took up residence at a barracks in Svyatoshyn district and at the Myhailivskiy Monastery in the heart of the ancient city. They soon ran out of provisions. The Belgians found a novel solution to this problem: they started producing vodka with improvised equipment and selling it to the local population in exchange for basic supplies. When the Belgians first arrived in the Ukrainian capital, it was in Ukrainian hands. However, the Central Rada of the Ukrainian independence movement had to cope with a revolt of red workers at Kyiv’s Arsenal Factory while confronting Bolshevik Red Guards approaching from outside the city. The ACM men found themselves caught in the crossfire. They initially took care of civilians who have found shelter at the Mihailivskiy monastery, but when red forces eventually occupied Kyiv, the Belgians move to evacuate. They managed to secure a train from the Bolsheviks and left Kyiv at the end of February. The Bolsheviks had wanted the ACM armoured cars in exchange for passage out of the city, but the Belgians were able to dismantle their vehicles before departing.

In mid-June 1918, the ACM unit crossed the Atlantic to France. The unit disbanded in July 1918 following one final parade in Bordeaux. Veterans of the ACM unit continued to reunite for annual meetings in Belgium long after the war. Those who died in 1916-17 at the Galician Front remained buried in Ternopil, their simple graves marked by wooden crosses. The story of Belgium’s ACM unit is not a tale of heroic warriors. These were simple soldiers on an epic journey set against a colossal historical backdrop. It is the story of young Belgians who wanted to fight against the invaders of their fatherland but ended up crossing the globe.

LONG ROAD HOME The train initially headed north to Moscow but the Belgians became stuck in the neighbourhood of Vologda. Rumours spread that German forces had cut off the northern route to Arkhangelsk. When the ACM staff pushed for this shorter route out of revolutionary Russia, a mutiny broke out. ACM troops refused to head north and instead began negotiating with local Bolsheviks. This dangerous revolt ended when the ACM commander gave in and decided to take the Trans-Siberian Railway to the Far East. It would be a difficult journey. The Siberian winter caught the train and its Belgian passengers in an ice-cold grip, while local Bolsheviks tried to disarm them. They had to force free passage in Omsk and east of Lake Baikal. At the end of March 1918, the ACM Belgians finally crossed the Russian-Chinese border. They spent a month on leave in the Manchurian town of Harbin. Some young Belgians indulged in erotic adventures; a few others deserted the ACM and joined the anti-Bolshevik White Cossacks
