hen copper and canary-coloured leaves start falling on the heads of joggers in Stryskiy Park, when couples lounging on the streetside terraces that dot the centre city start snuggling up under blankets, when Lviv’s iconic trams are crammed like sardines (even more than usual) with eager students and their pregnant backpacks – you know exactly what time of year it is: Back to School! Like in many other parts of the world, September sees our youngest and brightest head back to their studies. Full of hope and ambition, they continue their work toward their goals – and maybe it’s time for you to do the same! September in Lviv is a season buzzing with excitement – clubs, festivals, athletics – there is just so much going on! After spending the summer celebrating the achievements of some of our finest athletes and patriots, maybe it’s time we get back to work on our own goals. No matter what your interests, Lviv will have something just right for you.

Think of the Olympians we all watched last month and how rewarded they felt in achieving their dreams. You can do that to! Just ask Daniele, who realised his dream of owning a restaurant (and falling in love). Set a goal for yourself. It could be the same as Daniele’s, or something completely different – maybe you want to speak Ukrainian, or learn to brew beer, or run a marathon, or dance salsa, or develop a great way to cook varenyky. Whatever it is – now it’s your time to get at it! Like Leopolitan students city-wide that are returning to school this month, it’s your turn to go Back to School. What is it that you’re going to study?

No matter whether you’re busy business elite, an experienced expat with too much time on your hands, or a curious tourist just passing through – we’re all the same in a Ukrainian language class! Language classes are an excellent way to meet people living a common experience as you and teachers often become the first point of reference for any question you may have. IN LVIV LVIV’S BOOK FAIR & LITERATURE FESTIVAL September 15–18 Lviv Art Palace (15–17 Kopernika St). Additional Locations: Pototsky Palace Square (13 Kopernika St.), Art Palace Square (17 Kopernika St.), Lviv National University Square (1 Universitetska St.), and in the city centre on Svobody Ave. The Lviv International Book Fair & Literature Festival – aka the Publishers’ Forum – will be back for the 23rd time and this year brings together over 300 publishing houses and 100 writers from all over the world to present their newest books and re-introduce classical literary masterpieces to Leopolitans and guests of the city. This year’s special guest is Lithuanian poet, scholar, and writer Tomas Venclova – one of the five founding members of the Lithuanian Helsinki Group. Several projects will take place throughout the Publishers’ Forum, including the Best Book of the Forum award, the Young Republic of Poets competition, the Literature Against Aggression project, the Poetic Coffee-Shop by Meridian Czernowitz, and the Utopia platform for translators, writers, and publishers. In addition, literary management experts, journalists, and writers will present a feature series of workshops under the Ukrainian-Jewish Meetings project. Plenty of esteemed international authors plan to make an appearance during the festival, including: Pablo Giordano, the Italian author of the Premio Strega Award-winning novel The Solitude of Prime Numbers; Peter Steiner, the American cartoonist and novelist best known for his 1993 The New Yorker cartoon that prompted the adage “On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog”; and Philippe Beck, a French writer and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Nantes (France) and the European Graduate School (Switzerland). The annual Golden Lion festival is not just a carnival but a European theatrical tradition in its own right. LOS VIVANCOS COMING TO LVIV October 13, 19:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svoboda Ave.) Los Vivancos is bringing their biggest-ever production, AETERNUM – a show that sees a mix of flamenco, metal, martial arts, and live symphony music set to outlandish costuming, garish lighting, and an elaborate set – to Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre on October 13th. The concept is simple: people gather for free, 5 km runs every Saturday through Stryiskyi Park in Lviv and Trukhaniv Island in Kyiv. Runners can participate in any race without registration and all running times are posted online. Project Runday was inspired by a British movement known as “parkrun”, which began in 2014 when 13 runners met in Bushy Park, Teddington. Since then the movement has grown into an international family of nearly 2 million registered members and volunteers. In Ukraine, the movement was launched by enthusiasts just 6 weeks ago and already has over 250 runners and volunteers. ПРОЕКТ RUNDAY Щосуботи з 9:00, Стрийський парк Нова ініціатива здорового способу життя, недавно запущена у Львові і Києві під назвою Runday, без сумніву, припаде до смаку львів’ян та гостей міста. SHAKHTAR FACE FAMILIAR FOE IN EUROPA LEAGUE ACTION AT ARENA LVIV Lviv’s adopted football stars of Shakhtar Donetsk are pleased to welcome back Portuguese giants Braga in Europa League Group H qualifying action at Arena Lviv on September 29th. After finishing 2nd to Dynamo Kyiv in last season’s Ukrainian Premier League, the “Miners” gained automatic qualification to the Europa League’s playoff round where they dispatched Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir 4:1 on aggregate. The team was then drawn into Group H alongside Braga, Gent (Belgium), and Konyaspor (Turkey). Braga is becoming a familiar foe for

the star-studded Shakhtar, as the two were drawn together in the 2010-11 Europa League (Shakhtar won both games) and faced off in last year’s Europa League quarterfinal, where the Ukrainians went through after winning both games, including a 4:0 thrashing at Arena Lviv. The team from Donetsk is joined in the Europa League this season with fellow orphans Zorya Luhansk (playing out of Zaporizhia). Zorya faces a difficult Group A with Manchester United (UK), Fenerbahce (Turkey), and Feyenoord (Netherlands).

Lviv has long been known as a city famous for its coffee – ever since Lviv region’s own Yuri Kulchytsky founded the Vienna’s famed first coffeehouse back in 1683. The city has been a regional coffee capital since its Habsburg days, famed at once for the strength of our brews as it is for the cosiness of our cafes and coffeehouses. Our annual Coffee Festival has been running since 2007 and is designed to celebrate the city’s coffee culture as well as to showcase our incredible brews. It has become one of Lviv’s most popular festivals as Leopolitans and guests of the city flock to the numerous festivities and fun events that celebrate our popular caffeinated treat. As always, Lviv’s top coffeehouses will prepare barrel upon barrel of the most delicious blends from around the world to go alongside some of

Europe’s tastiest coffee treats. This will all be presented at Kava Expo – the event’s coffee fair. You’ll want to keep a lookout for when the Coffee King and Queen go in search of the city’s most hospitable coffeehouse and most delicious coffee blend. ФІКСАЖ 12 липня у день народження кав'ярні-музею кіно-фото техніки "Фіксаж", що за адресою Князя Романа, 6, стартувала виставка-конкурс "День народження у День фотографа". Головним призом конкурсу стала публікація у журналі Lviv Today. Всі охочі фотографи подали свої найкращі роботи довільної тематики, а всі бажаючі відвідали виставку у "Фіксажі", й, заодно, проголосували за фото, яке їм припало до душі найбільше.

У конкурсі взяли участь 7 фотографів, серед них Василь Пилип’юк, Ірина Баранська-Вороніна, Володимир Дубас. Протягом двох тижнів у мережі Facebook та у кав"ярні-музеї "Фіксаж" тривало активне голосування. І ось, 27 липня було оголошено переможця – ним став молодий фотограф Тарас Нога. Ми зустрілись з Тарасом на каві у "Фіксажі" й він розповів про свої враження: "Взагалі то, фотографія моє хоббі, але я мрію, щоб це стало моїм основним заняттям. За професією я продавець-консультат побутової техніки, але моє захоплення фотографією почалось з дитинства: у тата був плівковий "Зеніт", і я любив спостерігати за процесом, потім купили непогану цифрову мильничку, і я почав знімати сам. Тішило те, що одразу можна побачити результат, перефотографувати. Далі були фото квітів, котиків, ну як в усіх)). Тим часом, я багато читав про сам процес фотозйомки, цікавивився, як отримати ту чи іншу фотографію чи спецефект. Це так мене захопило, що я більше ні про що не думав, я був увесь там! Тарас Нога

Надалі почав фотографувати людей, знайомих. Й мені говорили, що у мене виходить! Взагалі, мені дуже подобається сам процес зйомки – комунікація з людьми. Хоча починав я з пейзажів, але, на жаль, на поїздки бракує часу – у мене сім’я, дитинка, основна робота. Тому зараз сконцетрувався на портретній та весільній зйомці, також знімаю "Love Story" для закоханих. До участі в фотоконкурсі мене підштовхнула моя знайома Юля, яка довідалась, що таку подію організовує кав’ярня "Фіксаж". Не сподівався на перемогу, адже серед учасників були Метри фотосправи. Але несподівано набрав найбільшу кількість голосів. Я дуже вдячний за підтримку усім, хто голосував за мене. Й обіцяю надалі тішити людей вдалими фото щасливих моментів та позитивних емоцій!» LVIV TODAY | September 2016

he young and talented Ukrainian designer Ella Kulikova stylishly presented her Contrasty collection on Kyiv’s Avalon complex’s summer terrace on August 6th. The women’s outfits on display creatively combined the contrasting colours of black and white. Femininity is the driving inspiration between the clothing of TM KUST by Ella Kulikova. As society moves forward at a frantic pace, women have to keep up while still feeling comfortable. The main task, then, of the designer is to create feminine but universal and wearable high-quality outfits. The brand also offers selections of luxurious handmade clothes especially created for festive events. Next up for Kulikova is the European Fashion Union international designers contest set to take place in Budapest on October 7–8.

SOCIETY ETNOVYR INTERNATIONAL FOLKLORE FESTIVAL Lviv hosted the colourful Etnovyr International Folklore Festival on Rynok Square from August 24–28. Initiated by Lviv’s Organisations of Festivals of Folklore and Traditional Arts (CIOFF) a few years ago, this year’s event saw wonderful performances by foreign ensembles, spectacular parades of participants through central Lviv, and energetic dancing and singing workshops. Leopolitans and guests of the city were able to get acquainted

with the cultural and music traditions of several countries from around the world, enjoy performances by groups from Serbia, Poland, India, the Czech Republic, and Ukraine, and even enjoy the delicious cuisine of participating countries. The highlight of the event was the “Ethno-Fashion” project, which presented fashion shows of national outfits of participating nations as well as collections by Ukrainian and foreign designers.

ПРОЕКТ "ПРОСТІР СИНАГОГ" Відкриття першої частини проекту "Простір синагог" відбулось на території давнього львівського єврейського кварталу 4 вересня. Гості церемонії відкриття побачили законсервовані залишки синагоги "Золота Роза", будинку навчання "Бет Хамідраш", а також меморіальну інсталяцію "Увічнення" на території проекту. У церемонії відкриття взяли участь представники львівської єврейської громади та львів’яни, які пережили Голокост, представники міжнародних організацій та посольств, члени єврейських громад і організацій, представники міських культурних та освітніх організацій. Відкриття меморіалу завершило тривалий процес дискусій, досліджень і спільної роботи експертів, муніципальних чиновників і представників єврейських громад у Львові і за кордоном. Метою довгострокового співробітництва було збереження пам'яті про єврейську історію у Львові та підвищення обізнаності громадськості із загальною міською історією та спільної спадщиною в місті. Крім офіційної церемонії відкриття меморіалу, частиною програми також був семінар "Мапи присутності: Місця, ініціативи та досвід єврейської спадщини в Україні" та святкове шоу "Мистецтво пам'яті: Голоси міста" з мультимедійними інсталяціями та концертом з творів Йозефа Коффлера і Марка Копитмана. Захід відбувся в рамках європейських Днів єврейської культури у Львові.

The goal of the project is to commemorate Jewish history in Lviv, to promote cooperation between the city and Jewish communities in Lviv and abroad, and to raise awareness of shared urban history. The program also included the Maps of Presence: Places, Initiatives, and Experiences of Jewish Heritage in Ukraine workshop, as well as the multimedia show The Art of Memory: Voices of the City featuring the works of Josef Koffler and Mark Kopytman. TRIBUTE TO IVAN FRANKO The world’s biggest sculpture of Ivan Franko – the famed Ukrainian poet, writer, and political activist, who is also famous for writing the first modern poetry and detective novels in the Ukrainian language – was unveiled in Lviv last month to celebrate the 160th anniversary of this legend. The enormous 600 kg sculpture is carved out of 6 pieces of geofoam and took 12 Ukrainian sculptors to assemble. Today, you can see him paired together with the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre on the 20 UAH bill. And, for a limited time, in real life – as the sculpture was placed in the square in front of the Opera Theatre before moving to its permanent resting place in Franko’s birthplace, the Village of Nahuievychi.

Під час заходу, присвяченого 160-річчю Івана Франка, 12 українських скульпторів показали шість елементів з пінополістиролу, які, складаючись разом, утворюють найбільший у світі портрет Івана Франка вагою 600 кілограмів. Як відомо, портрет І. Франка розміщений на 20-гривневй купюрі разом із зображення львівського оперного театру, а тут це "сусідство" можна було побачити в реальності. Lviv’s Opera and Ballet theatre started new season and treated theater going public with spectacular opera Aida by Guiuseppe Verdi on September 3rd. As Aida came Ukraine’s Merited Artist Svitlana Mamchur while as Radames the public saw Bulgarian tenor Kaludi Kaludov. In over 30 years on the stage, Kaludov has performed over 60 roles in various parts of the world. He has sung with Placido Domingo, Samuel Ramey, Renato Bruson, Zancanaro, Mirella Freni, Gena Dimitrova, Nikolay Giaourov, etc. He has worked with the greatest conductors and directors of our time. Since 2009 Kaludi Kaludov is director of the Opera and Philharmonic Society in Plovdiv (Bulgaria). His administrative commitments never stopped his artistic activities, and he works as a soloist at the OPS – Varna. Leopolitans and guest of the city were generous with their praise and admiration for the talent of the superb Bulgarian tenor with enchanting voice and exciting stage presence.

“MARRIAGE IN ONE DAY” IN LVIV Ukraine recently launched the “Marriage in One Day” pilot project aimed at a simplified, one-day marriage registration process in six cities across Ukraine: Kyiv, Odesa, Lviv, Kherson, Mariupol, and Severodonetsk. The project allows Ukrainian citizens “to register the marriage without bureaucracy, queues, or any Soviet remnants – in particular, the 30-day waiting period” said Ukrainian Minister of Justice Pavlo Petrenko while conducting a festive ceremony in Lviv on August 19th. From August 20th, Leopolitans and Ukrainian guests of the city have the possibility to get married at Lviv’s Danylo Halytskyi International Airport, Shevchenkivskyi Hai open-air museum, or Arena Lviv. Lviv City Hall’s sightseeing balcony was chosen for the project launch in which 3 lucky couples were able to perform their ceremonies. The newly-married couples were presented with their marriage certificates by Petrenko himself. The Ministry of Justice expects the program to be available to all Ukrainian regions sometime in 2017.

"ШЛЮБ ЗА ОДИН ДЕНЬ" У ЛЬВОВІ Пілотний проект спрощеного процесу реєстрації шлюбу за один день розпочався у шести містах України – у Києві, Одесі, Львові, Херсоні, Маріуполі і Сіверодонецьку. Проект дозволяє українським громадянам "зареєструвати шлюб без зайвої бюрократії, черг чи якихось радянських пережитків – зокрема, 30-денного періоду очікування", сказав міністр юстиції України Павло Петренко під час проведення першої урочистої церемонії у Львові 19 серпня. Від 20 серпня для львів’ян і українських гостей міста тепер є можливість вступити в шлюб у приміщенні львівського міжнародного аеропорту ім. Д. Галицького, у Шевченківському Гаї, або на стадіоні "Арена Львів". Оглядова галерея Львівська міської ради була обрана місцем церемонії запуску проекту, в якому взяли участь перші три щасливі пари. Молодятам вручив свідоцтва про шлюб сам міністр юстиції П. Петренко. Міністерство юстиції планує запровадження такої послуги у всіх регіонах України до кінця 2017 року.

WORLD SPACE MODEL CHAMPIONSHIPS Lviv welcomed over 300 participants from nearly 20 countries as the city became a first-time host of the FAI World Space Models Championships from August 23-28. Over the 5 days of competition, Leopolitans and guests of the city were able to take in over 2000 rocket launches, technology workshops, hands-on classes for children, and other outdoor activities. Space Modelling is a technical sport where participants compete in designing, constructing, and launching model rockets. In some events, competitors are even required to pilot their aircraft back to Earth (ex. Radio-controlled models). The main evaluation criteria are flight altitude, duration, and landing accuracy. The closing ceremony of the 2016 World Space Modelling Championships were held and crowned the following countries and individuals world champions: Senior All-Around Team: (1) Ukraine, (2) Bulgaria, (3) USA Junior All-Around Team: (1) Slovakia, (2) Poland, (3) China, (4) Ukraine Senior Individual All-Around: Jordi Roura (Spain) Junior Individual All-Around: Michal Zitnan (Slovakia)

ЧЕМПІОНАТ СВІТУ З РАКЕТОМОДЕЛЮВАННЯ Понад 300 учасників з 19 країн світу приїхали до Львова на Чемпіонат світу з ракетомоделювання 2016, якій відбувся 23–28 серпня. Протягом 5 днів змагань, відвідувачі змогли побачити понад 2000 запусків ракет, взяти участь в технологічних семінарах, практичних заняттях для дітей, а також активно відпочити. Ракетомодельний спорт – це технічний вид спорту, де учасники змагаються в проектуванні, виготовленні та запуску моделей ракет. У деяких категоріях, учасники навіть повинні повернути літальний апарат назад на Землю (наприклад, радіокеровані моделі). Основними критеріями оцінки є висота польоту, тривалість і точність посадки. AQUA PARK CELEBRATES 8TH ANNIVERSARY Lviv’s Plyazh (Beach) Aqua Park festively celebrated its 8th anniversary on August 6–7 with spectacular parties and plenty of surprises! The colourful event featured disco parties, a fabulous bubble show, and exciting contests that were fun for both children and adults alike. Plenty of guests came out to the celebration party to give a big ‘thank you’ to Western Ukraine’s biggest sports and entertainment complex! Opened in 2008, Plyazh Aqua Park was the first complex in Western Ukraine that combined entertainment, sports, and healthy recreation. It surprises not only with its size, but also with the huge number of various water amusements – five swimming pools, a hydro massage, and nine waterslides of differing lengths. This is all in addition to the site’s modern fitness centre, its relaxation zone featuring five saunas, cafes, restaurants, and shops. Plyazh has worked on health promotion from day one and continues to host swimming competitions and social programs for Lviv region’s children and youth.

LVIV INTERVIEW Як починався ваш шлях як ресторатора? Чому почали займатись саме цим? З дитинства мені подобалось поратися на кухні, коли я був маленьким, то любив допомагати бабці в приготуванні страв, потім пішов навчатись в інститут ресторанного бізнесу й почав працювати помічником в ресторані. Зрозумів, що професія кухаря дозволяє подорожувати цілим світом, а я дуже люблю подорожувати! Що стосується приготування страв, то для мене це мистецтво. Кожна страва для мене є особливою, я не готую за стандартними рецептами, ось чому, щоб працювати без рамок та обмежень і по-справжньому творити потрібно відкрити власний ресторан. Тому, коли мені сповнилось 23, я відкрив свій перший заклад у Австрії неподалік Відня. Звийчайно, це був заклад з італійською кухнею. Бізнес був дуже успішним, але перемогла жага до подорожей та цікавість до культури інших націй. Незабаром я продовжив свою діяльність в Італії, Швейцарії, Голандії, Польщі. Про Україну й, безпосередньо, про Львів чув багато гарних відгуків. Я приїхав сюди спершу як турист, навіть не здогадуючись, що дана поїздка змінить моє життя - саме у Львові я зустрів свою майбутню дружину Уляну. Постав вибір між почуттями і бізнесом, і, звичайно, перемогло перше). На той час у мене був ресторан Delizia на о. Мен в Англії. Я обрав кохання та переїхав жити до Львова, а зараз відкрив одноіменний заклад тут. З чим довелось попрацювати найбільше, щоб відкрити бізнес в Україні? Для мене ресторанна справа це не тільки бізнес проект, головною метою якого є отримання прибутку. В першу чергу для мене це можливість займатися улюбленою справою, а якщо все, що робити – робити добре – ти будеш успішним.

Саме так й сталось з італійцем Даніелем Леджіеро, засновником і шеф-кухарем нового ресторану Delizia, звісно, італійського ресторану, що вдало розташувався по вулиці Лесі Українки, 27. Незважаючи на неймовірне завантаження Даніель знайшов трохи часу для Lviv Today, щоб розповісти нашим читачам свою історію та історію ресторану Delizia.

Організацією та відкриттям ресторану Delizia, починаючи від закупівлі посуду та кухонного обладнання, закінчуючи дизайном, ремонтом та отриманням усієї необхідної документації займалася моя кохана дружина Уляна, яка є юристом за фахом. Вона і зараз повністю забезпечує його функціонування, виконує обов’язки адміністратора, бухгалтера, економіста, юриста, діловода!!! Також я неймовірно вдячний моєму другу Давіду Чавареллі, який повірив в успіх ресторану Delizia й приїхав з Італії до Львова, щоб працювати зі мною. Найбільшою проблемою при відкритті для нас був час – ми постановили собі відкритись у певних числах. Та нам було складно здійснити задумане, й основна причина цього – що в Україні люди не дуже відповідально ставляться до своїх зобовязань, тому виникали непередбачувані затримки. Але попри все нас також оточували і професіонали своєї справи, які надзвичайно допомогли нам у відкритті ресторану.

На даний момент я тішусь, що у нас за кілька місяці роботи вже є постійні клієнти, людям смакують наші страви. В основному їдять в ресторані, але також беруть піцу та випічку з собою. Особливо полюбились нашим гостям сицилійські тістечка каноллі. Що для вас італійська кухня? Чому вона така популярна? Італійці є талановитими не тільки в приготуванні страві, але й у багатьох інших сферах – в дизайні одягу, машин, мотоциклів. Я думаю, це тому - що в будь яку справу ми вкладаємо емоцію, віддаємось на всі 100%. Це як мама, яка готує для своїх дітей, вона додає до страв свою любов – тому все таке смачне! У Львові чимало ресторанів, що пропонують італійські страви. Чим ваш ресторан відрізняється від інших? Італійська страви повинні бути приготовані з італійських продуктів, а не з будьяких інших. Також важливим є те, щоб для вас готували італійці. Дуже багато закладів лише імітують італійську кухню, таким чином спотворюючи її поняття, але вона не є оригінальною!. Які продукти використовуєте для приготування? Якої думки про українські продукти? Також головне в італійській кухні – це свіжість продуктів. У нас немає нічого замороженого, окрім морепродуктів. Для приготування використовуємо італійські продукти найкращої якості. Макарони (пасту) купуємо в Італії, деяку готуємо власноруч, також печемо хліб. Щодо українських продуктів, то мені дуже подобається, що тут ще можна купити справжні домашні продукти, а не «пластмасові» із супермаркетів. У вашому меню чимало страв, але які з них заслуговують особливої уваги? Чи є страви, які у вас виходять найбільш вдало? Всі мої страви улюблені. Також для мене не існує строгого дотримання рецептури, я люблю імпровізувати. Які у вас захоплення поза кухнею? Я полюбляю рибалити. Мій найбільший трофей – тунець вагою 105 кг. І наостанок традиційне питання: про плани на найближче майбутнє? Нічого спеціального не планую. Я щасливий, бо у мене є кохана дружина, двоє прекрасних діток, скоро має народитись третя. У мене є улюблена робота, чого ще бажати?

How did you get your start as a restaurant owner? Why did you get into the field? From an early age, I liked to spend time in the kitchen. When I was a kid, I often helped my grandmother cook. Later I graduated from the Restaurant Business Institute and started working as a restaurant assistant. I discovered that the chef profession allows one to travel around the world – and I love to travel. Concerning cooking, it is a real art. Each of my dishes is very special and I don’t follow standard recipes. So if I wanted to work without boundaries, it was necessary to open my own restaurant – not to just cook, but to create. I opened my first restaurant in Austria near Vienna when I was 23. Of course, it specialised in Italian cuisine. And while it was quite successful, my adventurous spirit and interest in other lands and cultures finally took over. I continued my work in Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Poland. I heard plenty of positive things about Ukraine and Lviv, so I came here as a tourist not knowing what was in store. I met my wife Ulyana in Lviv, and was faced with a choice: my feelings or my business. Of course, my feelings won. At the time I owned a Delizia restaurant on the Isle of Man in UK. But as I had chosen love, I came to Lviv and opened up a venue here with the same name. What was the main challenge you faced in opening a business in Ukraine? For me, operating a restaurant is not some project created solely for profit. It’s a chance to do the job that I love. When you do what you like and do it well – profit will come. All of the organisational issues connected with opening Delizia – from purchasing the kitchenware and

That is the story of Italy’s Daniele Leggiero, the founder and chief cook of the new Delizia Italian restaurant located at 27 Lesya Ukrainka St. Despite his hectic schedule, Daniel was kind enough to find some time to share his own story with Lviv Today readers.

equipment to the interior design to repairing the location – my beloved Ulyana, a lawyer by trade, took care of. Even now she ensures the smooth functioning of the venue by acting at the same time as administrator, bookkeeper, lawyer, and all-around problem solver. I’m also grateful to my friend Davide Ciavarelli, who believed in the success of Delizia and came from Italy to Lviv just to work with me. Meeting the scheduled opening date was the most challenging, as sometimes Ukraine people were not very responsible and created a lot of delays for us. However, we also worked together with high qualified professionals who made good job and I’m pleased that now – after only few months – we already have devoted customers that love our dishes. Guests usually come to eat at the restaurant, but some prefer to take their orders home from our pizzeria or bakery. Our most popular dish is our Sicilian sweet pastry Cannoli.

Italian cooks. Most venues just imitate Italian cuisine, spoiling the real notion of it and offering less-than-savoury imitation dishes. What goods do you use for cooking? What is your opinion about Ukrainian goods? The main thing about Italian cuisine is the freshness of the goods. We do not use any frozen products except seafood. For our dishes, we use only Italian products of exceptional quality. We bring in our pasta directly from Italy and we bake our own bread. As far as Ukrainian products are concerned, I am very pleased that I have the possibility to buy authentic, homemade products and not “plastic” food from supermarkets. Your menu is quite rich, so what dishes would you personally recommend? Do you have any specialties?

What does Italian cuisine mean for you? Why do you think it is so popular?

I love all my dishes. I believe that there is no law to sticking to the recipe. I like to improvise.

Italians are not only talented in cooking, but in many other spheres as well – fashion, design, automobiles. In my opinion, it’s because we put our emotions – our souls – into things 100%. It’s like a mother cooking for her own children – she puts in a lot of extra love. That’s why everything is so tasty!

What hobbies do you have outside the kitchen?

There are a lot of Italian restaurants in Lviv. What makes yours so special? Italian dishes should be cooked from Italian products. It’s also very important to have native

I am a huge fan of fishing and can boast of a trophy, 105 kg tuna! And finally, the traditional question about your plans for the future? I don’t have any special plans. World Strongest Team Championship Arena Lviv was host to the World Strongest Team Championship international strongman competition on July 17th. The Ukrainian team of Oleksandr Lashyn and Volodomyr Reksha took on muscle-bound competitors from Norway, Poland, Finland, Georgia, and the USA. The athletes were pushed to the limits with challenges such as the two-man log lift, the Atlas stones, a tug-of-war, and the Conan’s wheel – where the athletes pick up 400+ kg and walk around the track as far as possible. The home crowd went away happy as the Ukrainian squad were crowned champions ahead of the Polish and Georgian teams. In addition to the competition, the program included sports exhibitions, cheerleader dance shows, and workshops for children and adults. One lucky visitor even walked away with a brand new Ford Fiesta car!

Найсильніша команда світу На стадіоні "Арена Львів" 17 липня відбулись міжнародні змагання силачів. Equestrian Riders Vie for Lviv Open Cup: The Lviv Open Cup for equestrian riders drew nearly 120 contenders to Lviv’s Burevesnik equestrian sports camp from August 19-21 to compete in Show Jumping, Dressage, and Eventing competitions. Maksym Dumych on horse Al-Hanta claimed the Eventing gold ahead of Ivan Gordon on horse Bagrationi and Volodomyr Dulya on horse Night-Fore, while Ternopil’s Yuriy Kondratenko on horse Zadulya was named champion in the Show Jumping event. The highlight of the tournament was junior rider Yevgeniya Grygoriyeva on horse Ratinel, who claimed an impressive bronze in the adult event.

Olympics games 2016: Taras Mishchuk won medal for Lviv The Rio Olympics closed out with a party last month after the Ukrainian team – competing in their 6th straight Olympics – finished in 31st place with 11 medals (2 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze). Ukrainians won gold in gymnastics and canoeing, silver in shooting, pentathlon, fencing, and gymnastics, and bronze in canoeing and fencing. Ukraine was represented by 206 athletes, including 18 from the Lviv region that competed in archery, wrestling, fencing, rowing, shooting, artistic gymnastics, weightlifting, and pentathlon. Two young Western Ukrainian athletes were excited to take home bronze in the canoe double 1000m sprint. National Dragon Boat Races: Navaria Lake, located just outside Lviv, played host to the Lviv Cup 2016 National Dragon Boat races on July 23rd. For those unfamiliar with the sport, dragon boat racing is, simply put, a boat race between teams of 20 paddlers, a drummer, and someone that steers. It’s a team sport that encompasses the elements of power, speed, synchronisation, and endurance. From its militaristic beginnings in Southern China, dragon boating has become the fastest growing team water sport in the world and a very popular corporate and charitable event. More than that, Ukrainian athletes are very good at it. At last year’s ICF Dragon Boat Club Crew World Championships, Ukrainian teams won a total of 17 gold medals. At the European Nations Championships in Rome, the Ukrainian national team took 20 podium places. So the Lviv Cup 2016 was bound to attract some fine teams from the more than 300 participants from around the country. In the end, it was Dubno’s Hetman that edged out Lviv’s Otaman for the title, while Kovel’s Zakhidny Viter (West Wind) took home the bronze medal. Also in attendance at the event were the Cossacks, members of the Svyata Pokrova Cossack chaika boat that is currently on a sea expedition, who greeted the participants and congratulated the winners.

Перегони човнів-драконів Озеро Наварія, що неподалік Львова, 23 липня стало місцем проведення перегонів човнів-драконів на Кубок Львова 2016 року. Для тих, хто ще не знайомий з цим видом спорту, надзвичайно популярним в країнах Азії, розповідаємо, що кожен човен мчить до перемоги силами 20 веслярів, барабанщика і стернового. Це командний вид спорту, в якому необхідні сила, швидкість, злагодженість і витривалість. Традиція перегонів походить від змагань військових човнів у Південному Китаї, але згодом цей командний вид спорту став дуже популярним у світі як корпоративний і часто супроводжується благодійними акціями. Як виявляється, українські спортсмени дуже добре освоїли цю спортивні дисципліну. На чемпіонаті Dragon Boat Club Crew World минулого року українські команди здобули загалом 17 золотих медалей. На чемпіонаті Націй Європи у Римі українська збірна посіла 20 призових місць. Так що у змаганнях на Кубок Львова взяли участь кілька прекрасних команд і понад 300 учасників з усієї країни. У фіналі команда "Гетьман" з Дубна, перемогла команда львівських "Отаманів", а Ковельський "Західний вітер" повіз додому бронзову медаль. Також на змаганнях були присутні козаки, члени екіпажу козацької чайки "Свята Покрова", що ходять у справжні морської експедиції, які привітали учасників і переможців.

THE INTERVIEW WITH THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE EBA ANNA DEREVYANKO Recently the executive director of the EBA has given an interesting and cognitive interview to the 5 Channel. Anna Derevyanko was speaking about the key goals and the mission of European Business Association, specifically the importance of implementation of European values and business standards. She has also highlighted five main challenges which companies face on their way in Ukraine. Corruption, weak judicial system, unpredictable situation in the country, limited access to loans, and low purchasing power affect business and investments the most. “When our companies are complaining on corruption, we ask them certainly not to pay bribes and they follow our advice. Because if they pay once, they will have to pay always. Consequently, the country won’t change ever. Let’s solve problems according to the rule of law and with frank dialog”. Moreover, on her opinion there are three progressive Ministries that openly and blandly cooperate with EBA, namely: the National Bank of Ukraine, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the State Fiscal Service. It is important to mention that according to EBA Investment Attractiveness Index Ukraine is now at 2.88 (5 scale grade). Though, so far this rate is more negative, there is a tendency of growth during last years. Thus, it is believed to increase soon. Summing up Anna Derevyanko expressed positive expectations and predictions of rise of Ukrainian investment attractiveness in the near future. "Foreign investors in spite of all the existing barriers are still interested in Ukraine. It's a huge market with a lot of opportunities. We should be more demanding first of all to ourselves as a society, not only to others. As a result it will open the way for further improvement of our country," – said Anna Derevyanko.

EBA LABOUR MARKET INDEX EBA Western Ukrainian Office together with Lviv Consulting Group keep monitoring the labor market of Western Ukraine and are happy to share the results of the 11th Wave, Western Ukraine Labour Index, conducted in June 2016. The survey’s objective was to identify major trends and dynamics of the labour market and to compare them with the previous wave’s indices.

Labour market Index in June 2016 went up by 0.11 since February 2016 and is at the level of 2,98. The labor market is unstable or neutral for employers. The survey participants believe market salaries and employee related costs are still very attractive for businesses, though it becomes more difficult for employers to find and hire qualified candidates in the market.

LABOUR MARKET INDEX DYNAMICS The main changes at the Western Ukrainian Labour Market in comparison to the previous wave are the following: • Recruitment of new employees and retention of valuable employees, as well as performance management are top priorities in managing human resources for majority of the businesses. More participants compete for potential employees in the market with employers from outside of Ukraine; this is today an issue for large production companies in machine building, automotive, food processing industries and in agriculture. 20% less companies are ready to invest in employees training and development.

• For two concurrent waves we have observed a persistent tendency among businesses to increase headcount – 65% of respondents plan to hire. These are construction and distribution firms, retailers, partially IT firms, as well as production companies in various industries with existing headcount above 500 employees. • In comparison with the 10th wave pay levels of nonskilled and skilled labor increased by 20%-35%; administrative clerks and middle level managers in production and service companies now enjoy a higher pay (by 18-20%). There is a substantial increase by 1840% in average pay levels of specialists both in production and service companies. For three concurrent waves none of respondents indicated reduction of pay levels. THE SINGLE WINDOW’ IN CUSTOMS SERVICES

On August, 15 Maryana Lutsyshyn, the Regional manager of the EBA Western Ukrainian office, Anton Podilchak, the Deputy Chairman of the Regional Coordination Council of EBA Western Ukrainian Office, Serhii Ryabov, Director of Customs Agency of the GalTrans-Logistics company together with Ihor Kalamuniak, the Head of Department of Customs Control of Lviv Customs and Volodymyr Hontarchuk, the Head of Customs IT service took part at the press-conference organized by Lviv Press-Club. The participants discussed new ways of customs reforms on implementing the single window into the customs service. ‘The Single Window’ in Customs services is the positive tool in simplifying documentation arrangement in registration procedures at customs. But its implementation faced with several issues which should be overcome in order to fill the positive aspects of the customs reform. Later on, on 23 of August, 2016 Mariya Muliava, the Executive director of GalTransLogistics took part in another press conference concerning this topic and shares her experience in using the ‘single window’. It was mentioned during both discussions that even with the electronic registration business have to collect and submit paper documents. Unfortunately ‘single window’ service does not guarantee that all documents will be arranged and issued in one day.

Also, the business pointed out that the bottleneck in this process is to review the cargo, which, according to current regulations, can be 24 working hours, that is actually three eight-hour working days. The Customs representatives assured that they do their best in order to implement the ‘single window’ successfully and they are open to cooperation with business in order to find weak points in it. Q: Dear Colleagues, I am a foreign citizen – shareholder of Ukrainian company which has difficulties with repayment of a loan before one of Ukrainian banks as well as fulfillment of its monetary obligations before some of its counteragents. According to information from mass media, Supreme Rada of Ukraine adopted a new Law, which allows debtors restructure their debts before creditors. Please, inform which are the main grounds, terms and means of financial restructuring, prescribed by the Law?

The Law of Ukraine "On financial restructuring", developed due to crisis financial processes in the economics of Ukraine, was adopted by Supreme Rada of Ukraine on 14-th of June 2016. The Law will come into force on 19-th of October 2016 and will remain in force for three years. It is important to note that the Law prescribes the procedure of a voluntary financial restructuring, i.e. the procedure which is to be carried out without addressing to the court by means of negotiations between a debtor (any legal entity, except of financial institutions or public enterprises), its associated entities and involved creditors (individuals, legal entities, state bodies). The main grounds and terms for financial restructuring are: • a debtor has a debt before at least one of financial institutions; • financial condition of a debtor is critical; • economic activity of a debtor shall be recognized by creditors as perspective; • the procedure of financial restructuring was initiated by a debtor; • approval for financial restructuring was provided by at least one of financial institutions – debtor's creditor; • bankruptcy proceedings against the debtor does not exist. The Law foresees rather wide list of restructuring means, these, inter alia, are: amending agreements with creditors in the part of the terms of repayment a debt, currency of a monetary obligation, the amount of interest rate etc.; provision of a new financing for a debtor; alienation of a debtor's property; transfer of a debtor's property in favor of a creditor; relief from the part of debts; recovery against pledged property, amending pledge contracts; provision by a debtor or third persons of additional security for debtor's obligations' fulfillment; debtor's reorganization; the change of a debtor's management etc. As a result of successful negotiations, a debtor, involved creditors and investors (if exist) shall sign a restructuring plan within 90 days since the date of financial restructuring procedure initiation. This term may be prolonged, but in total shall not exceed 180 days.
