breves Chanel tiene por costumbre basar sus colecciones de joyería y relojería en aspectos o hechos destacados de la vida de su legendaria fundadora, y en el caso del león que inspira la más reciente colección de alta joyería de la maison francesa las conexiones son múltiples: Coco Chanel nació bajo el signo de Leo, y es un león (el de San Marcos) el animal que figura en la heráldica de Venecia, la ciudad en donde encontró consuelo tras la muerte de su amado Boy Capel. Además su famoso atelier de Rue Cambon 31 contaba con numerosas estatuas y figuras de leones que, afirmaba, eran símbolos de buena suerte. the SPIRIT of the Lion Chanel is in the habit of basing their collections of jewellery and watches on highlighted aspects or facts in the life of their legendary founder, and in the case of the lion which inspires the latest collection of haute jewellery by the French house, there are multiple connections: Coco Chanel was born under the sign of Leo, and it’s a lion (of St. Mark), the animal that figures in the heraldry of Venice being the city where she found solace after the death of her beloved Boy Capel. Besides her famous atelier on Rue Cambon 31, she had numerous statues and figures of lions which she affirmed as being symbols of good luck. Canoe

Aunque tradicionalmente la canoa suele ser un tipo de embarcación práctica y sin mucho despliegue estético, la canoa creada por la firma milanesa de diseño Borromeo & De Silva es todo lo contrario. Esta maravilla monocasco está construida en fibra de carbono al que se le han añadido hilos de cobre, que según sus creadores aportan ‘profundidad a la textura, y brillan bajo el sol, dando vida a la superficie e imitando los reflejos del sol en el agua”. Su cubierta está fabricada en madera de teca colocada a mano. Y si no quiere remar, también le han agregado un pequeño motor eléctrico. Aunque la embarcación ha sido planteada como un proyecto único, sus creadores no están cerrados a fabricar más unidades bajo demanda.

Although the canoe is usually traditionally a kind of practical vessel, and without much to display as regards its aesthetic, the canoe created by the Milan firm Borromeo & De Silva is just the opposite. This wonderful monocoque is built in carbon fiber to which copper wire has been added, and according to the creators, this ‘gives depth to the texture and shimmers under the sunlight making the surfaces come alive, mimicking the shimmering sun reflecting on the water’. The deck is handmade using classic teak wood, and if you don’t want to row, they have also added a small electric motor. Although the canoe is meant to be a one-off project, the creators are open to making more on order.

OTTO JAKOB Jewellery as an Art Otto Jakob (1951, Múnich) descubrió el mundo de los cristales y minerales siendo un niño, gracias a un vecino que le permitió estudiar su colección de gemas y que, posteriormente, le regaló un libro sobre mineralogía. A los diez años ya había reunido una amplia colección de muestras provenientes de todas partes de Alemania, con especial énfasis en la zona de la Selva Negra. A este interés por las piedras preciosas y semipreciosas se unió una incipiente curiosidad por la orfebrería cuando, a los 17 años y estando de viaje de curso en Roma, su novia quedó prendada de unos anillos de alambre doblados en forma de flor que vendían en un puesto callejero. Jakob le prometió que le haría uno similar y, ya de vuelta a casa, aprendió como dar forma al hilo de metal, creando un anillo floral: ‘todas mis amigas querían uno’, recuerda su entonces novia y hoy en día mujer.

Otto Jakob (Munich, 1951) discovered the world of crystals and minerals during his childhood, thanks to a neighbour who let him study his collection of gems, and then gave him a book on the subject of mineralogy. At the age of 10, he had already brought together a large collection of samples from all parts of Germany with a special emphasis on the Black Forest area. Besides his interest for precious and semiprecious stones, he also developed a budding curiosity for silversmithing at the age of 17 while on a course trip to Rome, his girlfriend fell in love with some wire rings shaped into flowers that were for sale on a street stall. Jakob promised to make her a similar one, so when he arrived home, he learned how to shape the metal wire and subsequently created a floral ring. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;All my friends wanted oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, recalls his girlfriend at the time, who later became his wife.

Pero a pesar de sus habilidades manuales, los sueños de Jakob iban por otro lado; estaba decidido a convertirse en un gran pintor. Con este fin en 1977 se muda a Karlsruhe, para estudiar bajo la tutela del reconocido pintor alemán Georg Baselitz. El plan no salió exactamente bien, ya que al concluir sus 3 años de duro aprendizaje el joven aspirante a artista se vio confrontado a una dura epifanía, ‘Me di cuenta de que nunca me iba a convertir en un artista importante’, rememora. De pronto se vio con 29 años y un futuro incierto, y ahí tuvo su segunda epifanía: volvería a retomar su interés juvenil por la joyería, convirtiéndolo ahora en su profesión. A la hora de elegir el camino para formarse, Jakob volvió a exhibir la vena heterodoxa que ha caracterizado su carrera, y en vez de ingresar en un centro, una academia, o hacer una pasantía en un taller, decidió optar por la vía autodidacta. Tomando como punto de partida su gran admiración por el trabajo de figuras históricas de la orfebrería como el renacentista Benvenuto Cellini o el diseñador del S. XIX Fortunato Pio Castellani, visitó museo tras museo para analizar piezas maestras de la escuela etrusca, helena, o celta, y estudió con fervor tratados clásicos de Plinio y otros maestros.

But despite his manual skills, Jakob’s dreams were being channelled in another direction, as he had made up his mind to become a great painter. With this objective, he moved to Karlsruhe in 1977 to study under the supervision of the famous German painter Georg Baselitz. The plan didn’t work out exactly as planned, since after 3 years of hard apprenticeship, the young aspiring artist saw himself confronting a hard epiphany, as he recalls: ‘I realised that I was never going to become an important artist’. Suddenly he was 29 with an uncertain future, and this was when he had a second epiphany: he resumed his youthful interest in jewellery and turned it into his profession this time. At the time of choosing the way to train himself, Jakob showed his unorthodox streak again which characterised his career, and instead of enrolling in a centre, academy, or to do an internship in a workshop, he decided to opt for the self-teaching method. Taking his great admiration of the work by historic figures in silversmithing as a starting point, such as the Renaissance Benvenuto Cellini and the 19th century designer Fortunato Pio Castellani, he visited museum after museum to analyse masterpieces from the Etruscan, Hellenic and Celtic schools, and enthusiastically studied classics by Plinio and other masters.

Acompañó el aprendizaje teórico con un meticuloso trabajo práctico, aprendiendo técnicas como el tejer oro en cadena, hacer decoraciones de cuerda trenzada, el esmalte cloisonné, e incluso granulación, una técnica etrusca desarrollada unos 2.500 años a.C., que consiste en la unión de esferas o gránulos de oro muy pequeños a otra superficie de oro, formando un patrón. Desde el comienzo sus piezas tuvieron un aire distintivo y una personalidad única, reflejando perfectamente la ecléctica mezcla de influencias y peculiar bagaje formativo de su creador. Por eso no extraña que el primer cliente importante de Jakob fuese su antiguo maestro, Georg Baselitz, quien reconociendo el valor artístico de las joyas de su antiguo alumno compró algunas de sus primeras creaciones, y además le presentó a uno de sus marchantes, Hans Neuendorf, que apadrinó a Jakob comprando prácticamente toda la producción durante sus primeros años de trabajo. Además, Baselitz y Neuendorf le introdujeron al ámbito de numerosos artistas, marchantes, y gente del circuito de galerías, que también vieron sus sensibilidades reflejadas en las joyas del joven muniqués, haciéndose clientes y convirtiéndolo en el joyero del mundo del arte alemán durante los años ’80, una especie de secreto a voces reservado para los enterados de la comunidad…

Jakob accompanied what he was learning with a meticulous practical job, learning techniques such as how to weave gold into a chain, to make decorations using plaited rope, cloisonné enamelwork, and even granulation: an Etruscan technique developed around 2,500 years BC, which consists of joining spheres or very small granules of gold to another golden surface in order to form a pattern. From the start, his pieces had a distinctive look and a unique personality, which perfectly reflected the eclectic mix of influences and the individual educational training of their creator. That’s why it’s not surprising that Jakob’s first important client was his old master, Georg Baselitz, who recognised the artistic value of his former student’s jewellery, bought some of his first creations, and also introduced him to one of his dealers, Hans Neuendorf, who sponsored Jakob and bought practically the entire production during his first years in business. Furthermore, Baselitz and Neuendorf introduced him to the circle of numerous artists, dealers and people in the gallery circuit who also saw his sensitivity reflected in the jewels created by the young man from Munich, gaining clients and turning him into the jeweller of the German art world during the 80s; a kind of well-known secret reserved for the wellinformed in the community...

Sus piezas sólo se podían conseguir mediante contactos, alguien que conociera a alguien que conociera a su creador. Esta dificultad generó un aura de exclusividad alrededor de la joyería de Jakob que perdura hasta el día de hoy. Eventualmente Jakob decidió dar el paso buscando ampliar su público, terminó su relación de exclusividad con Neuendorf, y aprovechando que estaba recibiendo una cobertura mediática importante en distintas publicaciones de moda alemanas amplió su taller, comenzando a participar en exhibiciones y ventas privadas por Europa y sobre todo en Estados Unidos, donde tuvo una recepción muy favorable. El siguiente punto de inflexión en su carrera se produjo cuando,en 2008, fue invitado a exponer en la prestigiosa feria de arte y antigüedades TEFAF en Maastricht. Aunque en principio se trataba de una invitación puntual, su presencia fue tan exitosa que le ofrecieron un puesto permanente, convirtiéndose así en miembro del reducido y selecto grupo de joyeros que exponen en la feria. Ben Janssens, presidente de TEFAF en aquel entonces, comentó al respecto: ‘Lo elegimos basándonos en sus impresionantes diseños, y su atractivo transversal para coleccionistas de joyas, antigüedades, diseño, y arte contemporáneo’ His pieces could only be obtained through contacts, resulting in someone who knew someone, who knew their creator. This difficulty created an aura of exclusivity around Jakob’s jewellery that lasts up to today. Jakob eventually decided to take the step to seek more clients, and finished his exclusive business deal with Neuendorf. He took advantage of the significant media coverage he was receiving from different German fashion publications and extended his workshop, while starting to take part in exhibitions and private sales round Europe, and especially in the US where he had a very favourable reception. The second turning point of his career occurred in 2008 when he was invited to exhibit in the prestigious TEFAF art and antique fair in Maastricht. Although this was primarily a one-time invitation, his presence was so successful that they offered him a permanent stand, which turned him into a member of the limited and select group of jewellers who exhibit in the fair. Ben Janssens, who was the president of TEFAF back then had this to say on the subject: ‘we chose him based on his impressive designs, and his attractive cross section for collectors of jewellery, antiques, design and contemporary art’. 25

Una frase que resume perfectamente la esencia de la joyería de Jakob: la combinación de elementos históricos y actuales, la influencia del mundo del arte y el diseño, y la factura exquisita del trabajo artesanal minucioso. Aunque actualmente en el taller del joyero trabajan alrededor de 10 personas, todo sigue siendo minuciosamente supervisado y trabajado por Otto Jakob, y en cada pieza se invierten en promedio unas 100 horas, lo que tiene como consecuencia que la producción sea muy limitada (de 100 a 150 piezas anuales) y que cada joya sea única. Además Jakob no tiene tienda ni showroom, exhibiendo solo en TEFAT y en reuniones privadas, por lo que su aura de exclusividad no solo se ha mantenido, sino que ha aumentado con el paso de los años. Y eso que el lujo que practica es sutil, empleando muchas veces materiales poco convencionales, como madera o semillas, ya que a la hora de crear privilegia la textura, el color o los patrones del material por encima de su valor: ‘Son joyas para quien entiende de joyería’ afirma, ‘Una joya es sofisticada cuando deja al ladrón indiferente, pero hace que el conocedor gire la cabeza’, concluye. Y no podemos hacer más que darle la razón.

A phrase that perfectly summarises the essence of Jakob’s jewellery: the combination of historic and contemporary elements, the influence of the art and design world, and the exquisite production of meticulous handcrafted work. Although there are around 10 people currently working in the workshop, everything is meticulously supervised and crafted by Otto Jakob, and an average of 100 hours is invested into each piece, which results in a highly limited production (between 100 to 150 pieces per year), and ensures that each piece of jewellery is unique. Furthermore, Jakob does not have a shop or a showroom, he only exhibits his work at TEFAT and in private meetings, which is why his work has not only maintained an aura of exclusivity, as such aura has become larger over the years. And this is even though the luxury he practises is subtle, often using unorthodox materials such as wood or seeds, because when it comes to creating, Jakob gives privilege to texture, colour, or the patterns of the material as being higher than their value: ‘they are pieces for those who understand jewellery’; and concludes by stating: ‘a jewel is sophisticated when it leaves a thief feeling indifferent, but turns the head of someone who knows’. And we can’t do anything more but agree with him.

Transformed BY FIRE

Presentada en la pasada Feria de Arte Zona Maco 2018, la colección Alquimia del estudio mexicano de diseño EWE recurre a la herencia artesanal de México, pero poniendo el foco en cómo evolucionan las técnicas. Compuesta por tres objetos funcionales y escultóricos, Silla Ceniza, Mesa Humo y Lámpara Magma, en cada uno de ellos se explora el efecto transformador del fuego, tanto por su capacidad de alterar los materiales como por su papel en el proceso de fabricación. En el caso de la Mesa Humo, por ejemplo, la cubierta de madera de la mesa es quemada mediante el proceso japonés Yakisugi, otorgándole un color que es complementado por la estructura de acero en la que está montada, y la base de mármol negro, obtenida directamente de la cantera en una sola pieza.

Presented at the latest 2018 Zona Maco Art Fair, the ‘Alquimia’ collection by the Mexican design studio EWE, which has revisited Mexico’s artisan ancestral background, but have shifted their focus on this occasion to the evolving techniques that the artisans have mastered over many centuries. Made up by three functional and sculptural objects named the ‘Ceniza Chair’, ‘Humo Table’ and ‘Magma Light, the transforming effect of fire is explored in each one for its ability to change the materials, and its role in the process of making them. In the case of the ‘Humo Table’, for example, the wooden countertop of the table is burnt using the Japanese ‘Yakisugi’ process to give it a colour which is complemented by the steel structure onto which it is mounted, and the black marble base obtained directly from the quarry in one whole piece.

VirgilandAbloh the Streetwear Revolution

Virgil Abloh, y su firma/altavoz creativo, Off-White, son dos nombres polarizantes dentro del mundo de la moda. Por una parte hay quienes alaban la propuesta del diseñador estadounidense, por su enfoque intelectual y artístico del streetwear y la moda en general, y su forma de trabajo multidisciplinar; y por otra, un sector lo acusa de no aportar nada nuevo conceptualmente, y basar todo su éxito en ingeniosas campañas de marketing y branding. Sea como sea, una cosa es incontestable: Abloh y Off-White son sinónimo de éxito absoluto (Según Bussines Of Fashion, Off-White fue la marca que más creció en 2017, colocándose tercera en la lista global, solo por detrás de Gucci y Balenciaga) y su influencia sobre el panorama actual no hace más que crecer. Virgil Abloh and his brand/creative speaker, Off-White, are two polarising names in the world of fashion. On the one hand, there are those who praise the American designer’s proposal due to his intellectual and artistic approach of streetwear and fashion in general, and his way of multidisciplinary work; while on the other hand, there is a sector accusing him of not contributing anything new, and bases all his success on ingenious marketing and branding campaigns. Whichever the case may be, something is indisputable: Abloh and OffWhite are synonymous with complete success (according to Business of Fashion, Off-White was the brand which grew the most in 2017, placing itself third on the global list only behind Gucci and Balenciaga), and his influence on the present scene just keeps growing.

Abloh nació en 1990 en Rockford, una pequeña localidad de Illinois. Hijo de inmigrantes ganeses, cursó sus estudios básicos en la escuela secundaria Boylan Catholic, obtuvo el grado de bachiller en Ingeniería Civil por parte de la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison en 2002, y posteriormente un master de arquitectura del Instituto de Tecnología de Illinois. Trabajó en una firma de arquitectura durante dos años, hasta que finalmente decidió cambiar el foco de su creatividad hacia la moda y el arte. En 2009 se unió a la agencia creativa de Kanye West, Donda, en calidad de Director Creativo, encargándose de proyectos como diseño de escenarios y el merchandising de conciertos. Abloh y West se conocieron en 2002, antes incluso de que el rapero lanzara su primer disco College Dropout (2004), y desde entonces habían compartido múltiples proyectos creativos, forjando una fructífera relación que ayudó mucho a que el nombre de Abloh se ubicara en el radar de los cazadores de tendencias. Abloh was born during 1980 in the small town of Rockford, Illinois. As a son of Ghanaian immigrants, he completed his basic studies at the Boylan Catholic secondary school, obtained the undergraduate Civil Engineering degree from the University of WisconsinMadison in 2002, and then a Master of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He worked in an architecture firm for two years until he finally decided to change the focus of his creativity towards fashion and art. In 2009, he joined Kanye West’s creative agency, Donda, as the Creative Director, and in charge of projects such as stage design and concert merchandising. Abloh and West met in 2002 even before the rapper released his first album College Dropout (2004), and since then, he has taken part in multiple creative projects, forging a fruitful relationship that helped Abloh’s name to be on the radar of the trend hunters.

En 2009 también cursa, junto a West, una pasantía en Fendi Roma, y ya de vuelta en Chicago funda la RSVP Gallery, una boutique de ropa de hombre y galería de arte. En 2012 lanza Pyrex Vision, su primera firma de moda. Articulada sobre los logos gráficos impresos, fue una primera muestra de la propuesta de Abloh, quien no dudó en utilizar stocks de camisetas sobrantes de Champions o camisas de franela Ralph Lauren, transformándolas mediante estampados en un producto nuevo, y con un precio más acorde a la alta costura que al reciclaje. No tardó en ganar el estatus de marca de culto gracias a una excelente recepción por parte de la escena Street Wear más vanguardista, pero a pesar del éxito Abloh terminó las operaciones la firma después de apenas un año de vida. La decisión obedecía al deseo del diseñador de comenzar un nuevo proyecto, a una escala mucho más ambiciosa, por lo que se asoció con el grupo inversor y distribuidor New Guards Group, empresa con base en Milán, y fundada por Marcelo Burlon, un creativo de características muy similares a Virgil Abloh. La nueva empresa fue bautizada como Off-White (en referencia al “área entre el blanco y el negro”, un color que define puntos intermedios, según Abloh), y para su lanzamiento hizo buen uso del hype generado por Pyrex Vision, consiguiendo capturar la atención del público streetwear, pero también el de la moda más tradicional, obteniendo un éxito impresionante desde el principio. In 2009, he also did an internship in Fendi Roma together with West, and once back in Chicago, he founded a men’s clothing boutique and art gallery named the ‘RSVP Gallery’. In 2012, he launched his first fashion label under the name of Pyrex Vision. Based on printed graphic logos, it was a first example of Abloh’s proposal and he didn’t think twice about using stocks of surplus t-shirts by Champion or Ralph Lauren flannel shirts to transform them into a new product through the use of prints, and at a price more in line with haute couture than recycling. He didn’t take long to win cult brand status, thanks to an excellent reception by the most trend-setting streetwear scene, but despite the success, Abloh ended the brand’s operations after hardly a year in business. The decision was due to the designer’s desire to start a new project on a much more ambitious scale, hence he became associated with the investment and distributor New Guards Group - the Milan-based company founded by Marcelo Burlon who is a creative talent with very similar characteristics to Virgil Abloh. The new company was named ‘Off-White’ (in reference to the “area between white and black”, a colour that defines intermediate points, according to Abloh), and for its launch, he made good use of the hype generated by Pyrex Vision, managing to capture the attention of the streetwear public, but also the most traditional fashion, and achieved incredible success right from the start. 32

Actualmente Off-White -y por extensión Abloh- es una de las firmas de moda más influyentes, tanto en su esfera específica, como en la cultura popular general; un fenómeno que tiene su razón de ser en la peculiar idiosincrasia y forma de trabajar de su creador. Virgil Abloh no es un diseñador al uso, de hecho no diseña en el sentido tradicional de la palabra, siendo el concepto ‘creativo’ el que probablemente describe mejor su función. Este enfoque lo aplica a rajatabla en su práctica personal, ya que además de ropa, diseña mobiliario, merchandising, y una multitud de objetos, tiene una atareada carrera de Dj, colabora con artistas como Sky Ferreira o Kanye West (para quien ha diseñado de todo, desde portadas de disco, packagings, merch, o escenarios), imparte clases magistrales en la universidad sobre teoría del diseño contemporáneo, e incluso está preparando una exposición en solitario en el Museo de Arte Moderno de Chicago, para 2019. En resumidas cuentas, Abloh es una suerte de hombre del renacimiento contemporáneo. Off-White, (and therefore Abloh), is currently one of the most influential fashion brands, as much in its specific sphere as it is in general popular culture; a phenomenon which stems from the creator’s peculiar idiosyncrasy and way of working. Virgil Abloh is not a typical designer. In fact, he doesn’t design in the traditional sense of the word, being the ‘creative’ concept that probably best describes his role. His training in engineering and architecture led him to understand fashion from an almost analytical point of view, like a multidisciplinary phenomenon in which he can bring together his peculiar vision of luxury, pop culture, history of art, graphic design and visual semiotic. Abloh applies this approach to his personal practice to the letter, since besides clothing, designer furniture, merchandising, and a multitude of objects, he has a busy DJ career, collaborates with artists such as Sky Ferreira or Kanye West (for whom he has designed everything, from album covers, packaging, merchandising and stages), gives master classes in the university on contemporary design theory, and is even preparing a solo exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art Chicago for 2019. In conclusion, Abloh is a kind of modern Renaissance man.

The clothes are just a medium to create a new language, a creative glossary that is adjusted to the social transformation the world has experienced”. It’s a change of paradigm. It has mutated the consumer perception of luxury. 36

The young brand (founded in 2014) based in London proposes a SS collection in which light tones with an abundance of pastel pinks, shades of white and metallic silver take precedence, and in which her ‘Silver Lining’ ankle boots stand out, being the brand’s most popular model in silver and iridescent pink versions.

DARYN MOORE Para la PV de este año, la firma parisina ha querido hacer un ejercicio de equilibrio entre la comodidad y el lujo, utilizando materiales como la seda o el cachemir y siluetas como sus clásicas slippers, sandalias, y tacones anchos, logrando una colección sutil, equilibrada, y con elegantes toques de sensualidad y lujo. For the SS this year, the Parisian brand wanted to do an exercise of balance between comfort and luxury, using materials such as silk and cashmere, and silhouettes like their classic slippers, sandals and wide heels, achieving a subtle and balanced collection, and with elegant touches of sensuality and luxury.

FABRIZIO VITI La firma del diseñador toscano combina glamour, lujo, y sensualidad en una colección PV que rezuma espíritu italiano. Combinando materiales en apariencia discordante como tacones de cauchos mate con adornos de cuero o partes superiores de satén, logra crear modelos llamativos y equilibrados. The brand by the Tuscan designer combines glamour, luxury and sensuality in a SS collection that oozes Italian spirit. By combining materials which appear to unmatch like matt rubber heels with leather adornments or sateen uppers, he manages to create striking and balanced designs.

MARSKINRYYPPY La PV 18 señala los tres años de existencia de la firma estadounidense fundada por la texana Nicole Brundage, y a pesar de su corta existencia ha presentado una colección muy madura en la que hay un importante protagonismo del color y de materiales como los plásticos translucidos o elementos metálicos y metalizados. The SS 18 highlights the American brand’s three years in business, which was founded by the Texan, Nicole Brundage, and despite being a relatively new footwear brand, Brundage has presented a very mature collection in which there is an important prominence of colour and materials such as transparent plastics and metallic elements. Nicholas Kirkwood El diseñador estadounidense ha presentado una PV fiel a su espíritu ecléctico, poblada por una amplia diversidad de modelos, que incluyen pumps, sandalias (altas y bajas), botas a la rodilla, derbys, y -nuestros favoritos- botas de combate. Estas últimas con el tacón decorado con las clásicas perlas marca de la casa, y con múltiples acabados distintos entre los que se incluyen opciones tan dispares como lazo blanco, tejidos metálicos, satén, o specchio blanqueado en un acabado que simula el mármol. The American designer has presented a SS collection that is loyal to his eclectic spirit, and packed with a large variety of models including pumps, sandals, (high and low), knee-length boots, derbys, and our favourites being the combat boots. The latter come with a heel decorated with the brand’s classic signature pearls, and in multiple different finishes among which include such dissimilar options like white ribbon, metallic fabrics, satin or whitened specchio in a marble-look finish.

RUTHIE DAVIS La PV de la diseñadora neoyorquina es moderna, atrevida, y dominada por las alturas. Con un claro predominio de tacones de 14mm para arriba (aunque también hay lugar para algún modelo plano) y de zapatillas con suelas extra chunky y en ocasiones con grandes cuñas, se trata de una propuesta que privilegia la espectacularidad a la comodidad. The SS by the New York designer is modern, daring and it’s dominated by height. With a clear predominance of 14mm heels and higher (although the collection also includes some flat models) and shoes with extra chunky soles, or wedges on some models, this proposal favours spectacularness over comfort.

SOPHIA WEBSTER Una de nuestras diseñadoras favoritas, Webster vuelve a firmar una colección llena de color, en la que están presentes motivos clásicos de la firma, como las mariposas, y cobran protagonismo las flores, creando modelos tan espectaculares como las distintas versiones de la Jumbo Lilico. TABITHA SIMMONS La diseñadora inglesa propone una PV con mucho color y referencias marinas. Destacan sobre todo el colorido estampado de rayas, y el uso de corcho en tacones y plataformas. The English designer proposes a SS with lots of colour and marine references. The colourful printed stripes and use of cork on heels and platforms particularly stand out in the collection. UNA MIRADA que cambió la fotografía de moda

There are talents that can’t remain hidden, no matter how much life insists on obstructing their development, talents so volcanic that, despite the difficulties, they find a crack where they can force their way through and turn into an eruption. Erwin Blumenfeld was one of these talents, and just as his impressive work testifies (8,000 impressions, 30,000 slides and more than 150 collages), his difficult existence wasn’t an obstacle for him to unleash his spirit into the world.

Nacido en Berlín el 26 de enero de 1897, en el seno de una familia judía burguesa, su primer contacto con la fotografía fue a los 10 años, cuando un tío suyo le regaló una cámara por su cumpleaños. Fascinado por las posibilidades que el medio le ofrecía, Erwin decidió que iba a poner todo su esfuerzo en dominarlo. Born in Berlin on 26th January 1897, and into a Jewish middle-class family, his first contact with photography was at the age of 10 when an uncle of his gave him a camera as a gift for his birthday. Fascinated by the possibilities that the medium offered him, Erwin decided that he was going to put all his effort into dominating the camera.

With the help of a set of chemicals and a magic lantern, his first experiments took the form of self-portraits, a recurring motive throughout his career that was primarily cut short due to the death of his father when Blumenfeld was only 15 years old, and the reason why he had to start to work as a trainee in a women’s clothing shop; and secondly, due to the outbreak of the First World War, during which he was obliged to participate by driving an ambulance on the German front; a task in which he had to face such horror on a daily basis that led him wanting to leave. His mother aborted the adventure and reported him to the authorities by stating: “better dead in the trenches than a traitor”. He could finally leave the army ranks but not without earning himself the Iron Cross, being the highest awarded medal in the German army. In search of a different kind of atmosphere, he moved to Holland where he started to work in a furrier’s, and it was there where he happened to discover a fully equipped dark room, which led him to take up his photography hobby again with more passion. He made the most of the large number of women to find models, and convinced several clients to pose naked for him in the store.

Sin embargo su trabajo se aleja de lo convencional, buscando explorar la forma, el volumen y las texturas de sus sujetos, utilizando una iluminación no tradicional, y métodos como el collage, los fotomontajes, solarizaciones, combinaciones de negativos, o escenificaciones. Esta primera obra fue compartida con amigos y familias, y no tenía vocación de ser exhibida, pero fue sentando las bases para la aproximación experimental que caracterizó la carrera de Blumenfeld. La Europa de posguerra ofrecía una efervescencia artística, política e intelectual en la que el joven fotógrafo se sumergió de cabeza. Abrazó el Dadaísmo como credo, y creó numerosos fotomontajes, composiciones fotográficas, y collages con los que exploraba sus pensamientos, sexualidad, fascinación por la figura femenina, y obsesiones. Además practicó una crítica mordaz y satírica contra el totalitarismo que surgía en Alemania, creando varias obras que criticaban directamente a Hitler, y que eventualmente le valdrían la persecución de parte del régimen nazi. En 1936, y después de que fracasara la peletería que fundó junto a su esposa Lena Citroen, se mudó a París estableciéndose como fotógrafo, comenzando así de forma oficial una carrera que había estado practicando casi toda su vida. Eligió la capital francesa atraído por el surrealismo, y sobre todo por el revolucionario trabajo de Man Ray en el campo de la fotografía. His work, however, moved away from the conventional, and sought to explore the shape, volume and textures of his subjects, using unorthodox lighting and methods such as collage, photomontages, solarisations, combinations of negatives and staging. This first type of work was shared with friends and families, and although it was not cut out for exhibition, it was the foundation for the experimental approach that characterised Blumenfeld’s career. Post-war Europe offered an artistic, political and intellectual effervescence into which the young photographer delved in. He embraced Dadaism as a credo, and created numerous photomontages, photographic compositions and collages with which he used to explore his thoughts, sexuality, fascination for the feminine figure and obsessions. Blumenfeld also practised an incisive and satirical review against the totalitarianism that emerged in Germany, creating several works that directly criticized Hitler, and which eventually resulted in him being persecuted by the Nazi regime. In 1936, and after the furrier went out of business, which he founded together with his wife, Lena Citroen, he moved to Paris and went into business as a photographer, officially starting a career which he had been practising nearly all his life. He chose the French capital due to his attraction of surrealism, and particularly the revolutionary work by Man Ray in the field of photography. The change of scenery was obvious in Blumenfeld’s artistic production: a large part of his most creative and experimental material was created during that period, and it was in Paris where he began to establish himself as the great photographer that the world knows today.

It was also in Paris where he reaffirmed his certainty of the need to challenge rules and conventionalisms, which led him to not accepting any recommendation, and in fact being inclined to do just the opposite from what he was encouraged to do. According to the specialist on Blumenfeld’s work, Lou Proud: “if the instructions for a new film recommended not to heat over room temperature, he used to boil it, and if they recommended not to cool the film down, he used to freeze it.” It was also in Paris where he met Cecil Beaton who was so fascinated by the young photographer’s work that he decided to sponsor him, introducing him to the fashion world and the collaboration with magazines such as Verve, Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. However, all his professional and artistic progress was shaken with the outbreak of the Second World War. Blumenfeld’s obvious antinazism, together with his Jewish blood, turned him into a man wanted by the Nazis, and was arrested and put into an internment camp in 1940.

Afortunadamente, gracias a sus contactos e ingenio, en 1941 consigue la libertad y un pasaje a Estados Unidos. Allí se establece en Nueva York, y gracias a su fama y trabajos previos con publicaciones de moda, inicia una brillante carrera en este campo. Luckily, he managed to regain his freedom and a ticket to the US in 1941, thanks to his contacts and ingenuity. He set up his business in New York, and started a brilliant career in this field, thanks to his fame and previous jobs with fashion publications. He created hundreds of front pages for Vogue (more than any other photographer at that time or nowadays), and worked with magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Look or Popular Photography, among others. Loyal to his ideology, Blumenfeld didn’t accept introductions either at the time of creating his editorial images, achieving an artistic freedom almost without precedents thanks to his intransigence which, together with his talent and creativity, allowed him to create some more original and memorable images in the world of fashion photography. His unique style, which incorporates elements of his diverse artistic explorations in the commercial field is sill valid, and continues to influence generations of photographers in this day and age.

March is certainly one of the most exciting months for the lovers of watchmaking: on the one hand, the new timepieces have been presented and examined at SIHH, and on the other hand, the big event is yet to be enjoyed and experienced at Baselworld. Although it’s clearly impossible to cover a fraction of the first news in one article, this is the first step in discovering our favourite new watches for 2018, and we will continue with the task over the following editions.

LOUIS MOINET Unidos bajo el lema ‘4.500 millones de año en tu muñeca’, Louis Moinet ha presentado los modelos Acasta y Dhofar. Ambos comparten el mismo movimiento de fabricación propia, con dos jaulas de tourbillon de titanio azul suspendidas que giran en direcciones opuestas, y tienen un diámetro de 14.9 milímetros, lo que los convierte en los tourbillons dobles más grandes del mundo. United under the slogan ‘4 billion years on your wrist’, Louis Moinet has presented the ‘Acasta’ and ‘Dhofar’ models. Both share the same Louis Moinet movement with two, blue titanium tourbillon suspended cages that turn in opposite directions with a 14.9 millimetre diameter, which has turned them into the largest double tourbillons in the world. In addition, both models have a fully hand-engraved 5N gold case which comes in rose gold for the ‘Acasta’ model, and white gold for the ‘Dhofar’ one, but the two models are distinguished in the most extraordinary way: ‘Dhofar’ incorporates a piece of Dhofar 457 lunar meteorite onto the dial, and the ‘Acasta’ features a fragment of the Acasta Gneiss rock, being one of the oldest rocks on the planet with an estimated age of around 4 billion years. Two extraordinary watches of which only 3 shall be made per model.

AUDEMARS PIGUET Dentro de su potente oferta de nuevos modelos, nos han llamado especialmente la atención los Royal Oak Concept, en concreto los modelos Tourbillon Volante, y Tourbillon Volante GMT. El primero se trata del primer modelo femenino de la colección Royal Oak Concept, y es todo lo que se podría esperar de un AP de esta gama: esfera esqueletizada con tourbillon volante, y caja, esfera y bisel interior de oro blanco de 18 quilates, engastados con un total de 397 diamantes de talla brillante. El segundo es un robusto y anguloso modelo de 44 mm que combina titanio arenado y cerámica negra, y un renovado diseño de puentes y tourbillon volante -visible a las 9- para crear un reloj muy masculino y de marcada personalidad. As part of their vast array of new models, the Royal Oak Concept has particularly caught our attention, with particular emphasis on the ‘Flying Tourbillon’ and ‘Flying Tourbillon GMT’ models. The former is the first female model in the Royal Oak Concept collection, and it’s everything that could be hoped from an AP in this range with a skeletonised dial and flying tourbillon, case, dial and interior bezel in 18k white gold, set with a total of 397 brilliant cut diamonds. The latter is a robust and angular 44 mm model, which combines sanded titanium, black porcelain with a renewed bridge and flying tourbillon design, which is visible at 9, creating a very masculine watch with a noticeable personality.

The Chronomètre FB-1R.6-1 has taken inspiration from 18th century marine chronometers to which the famous watchmaker owes its reputation. Driven by a spindle and chain mechanism, it offers a striking visualisation of the functions on the dial: the time is displayed in a little arched window at 2, and the minutes are in a sub-dial placed at 12. An intricate power reserve indicator occupies the place between 8 and 10, and the second hand is joined directly to the 60-second tourbillon at the back of the case, together with a mobile cone power reserve system. The dial is made of nickel silver with a vertical satin finish and it’s bathed in black rhodium. The Chronomètre FB-1R.6-1 is a limited edition of 20 timepieces.

The large automotive fairs held during the first three months of this year have left us a mountain of new models, among which include these two incredible hypercars. First up is the new beast by the Croatian company named the ‘Rimac C_Two’. This is one of the most powerful sports cars ever built, and thanks to its four electric motors (one on each wheel), the C_Two is able to generate a maximum power of 1.914hp and 1,696 lb-ft of torque, which turns into a top speed of 258 mph (415 km/h) and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 1.85 seconds. To control so much power, it has a complex technological system that gives it all-wheel torque vectoring, facial recognition, environmental sensors, driving mood and a processing power equivalent to 22 MacBook Pros, which allow it to offer 4 levels of driving autonomy.

El segundo bólido es el Zerouno Duerta de Italdesign. Se trata de una versión targa del Zerouno original, y de éste conserva el motor Lamborghini V10 de 5.2 litros cuyos 610 CV le propulsan hasta los 320 km/h. Construido sobre el chasis de un Lamborghini Huracan, su carrocería está fabricada completamente en fibra de carbono (también se encuentra en abundancia en su interior), y gracias a su meticuloso trabajo aerodinámico se puede conducir con el techo bajado sin perder potencia ni velocidad. The second rocket is the ‘Zerouno Duerta’ by Italdesign. This is a targa version of the original Zerouno, which has kept the 5.2-litre V10 Lamborghini engine of which its 610hp drives it up to around 200 mph (320 km/h). Built on the chassis of a Lamborghini Huracan, the body is made entirely out of carbon fiber (plenty of which is also found in its interior), and thanks to the meticulous aerodynamic job, the car can be driven with the hood down without losing any power or speed. Among the different accommodation options, we find the ‘Overwater Suite’ particularly fascinating which, as its name suggests, is built over the water, as well as the ‘Suite on the Rocks, located on its own islet, and accessed via a stone bridge. The resort obviously offers all kinds of activities among which include snorkelling and diving, but having the beach and the nature at our disposal, we’re sure that our option would be to relax and enjoy them intensely.

Sumba Island A pesar de que se encuentra a tan solo una hora escasa de Bali, esta pequeña isla indonésica está muy lejos de ser un destino turístico masificado. El proyecto, titulado ‘brave new world: re-thinking design and large-scale robotic 3D printing’ ha sido presentado en esta edición de la Semana del Diseño de Milán, y en él han explorado nuevas técnicas y materiales aplicables a la impresión 3D. Las sillas Bow y Rise (nuestras favoritas) son obra de Zaha Hadid Architects, y Peeler, y Robotica TM, de Daniel Wildrig y Ross Lovegrove respectivamente.

Nagami is a new design studio based in Ávila, and for their first project, they have collaborated with none other than Zaha Hadid Architects, Ross Lovegrove and Daniel Wildrig, together with whom they have created 4 chairs using cutting edge 3D printing. The project, which is titled ‘Brave New World: Re-thinking Design and Large-Scale Robotic 3D Printing’ has been presented during this edition of the Milan Design Week in which new techniques and applicable materials were explored for 3D printing. The ‘Bow’ and ‘Rise’ chairs (our favourites) are made by Zaha Hadid Architects, and the ‘Peeler’ chair and the ‘Robotica TM’ stool are created by Daniel Wildrig and Ross Lovegrove respectively.

Gracias a su fascinante uso de la escala, las obras del artista australiano crean una tensión entre lo real y lo fantástico, otorgando a su propuesta una faceta surrealista y un discurso abierto a interpretaciones diversas, que hace que trascienda más allá del prodigio técnico para instalarse en una dimensión artística más compleja, convirtiendo a Mueck en uno de los representantes más interesantes de la escultura realista actual. Although the artwork by Ron Mueck (Melbourne, 1958) is classified within hyperrealist sculpture, his proposal is far from being a simple reproduction of reality. Thanks to his fascinating use of scale, the Australian’s artworks create a tension between real and fantasy. This gives his proposal a surreal side and a discourse open to different interpretations which makes it transcend beyond the technical wonder and puts it into a more complex artistic dimension, turning Mueck into one of the more interesting representatives of contemporary realist sculpture.

Nacido en una familia de inmigrantes alemanes, siendo aún un niño se trasladan de Melbourne a Londres. Sus padres se dedicaban a la creación de juguetes por lo cual creció entre títeres y muñecos, aprendiendo desde pequeño los secretos de su construcción. Aún joven mostró un inusitado talento para crear figuras de gran realismo, lo que le llevó –a pesar de no contar con ningún tipo de preparación formal- a trabajar en cine y televisión desde muy joven, participando en varias películas y shows infantiles, contándose entre sus trabajos más destacados la creación de personajes y efectos especiales para el famoso film ‘Laberinto’, y la fabricación de personajes y decorados para Jim Henson, el creador de los Muppets. Casado con la guionista Caroline Willing, gracias a su suegra -la artista Paula Rego- cambia el mundo del cine y la televisión por el de los museos y las galerías. Todo comenzó un día en la playa, cuando Mueck hizo un cocodrilo de arena para entretener a sus hijos, y el resultado fue tan llamativo que la gente se detenía a mirarlo; Rego, impresionada por la capacidad de su yerno para crear una figura que transmitía vida, le pidió que le fabricara un modelo de Pinocchio para una serie de cuadros que estaba pintando. El resultado de su encargo fue mucho más de lo que se esperaba, ya que Mueck le presentó un niño increíblemente realista de 83 cms de altura, con una expresión entre burlona y avergonzada. Born into a family of German immigrants, he moved from Melbourne to London when he was still a child. His parents used to make toys for a living, so he grew up around puppets and dolls, learning the secrets of how they were made since he was a child. Still during his infancy, he showed an unusual talent to create very realistic figures which led him to work in cinema and television since he was very young, even though he didn’t have any kind of formal training, participating in various films and children’s programmes, which among his most prominent works include the creation of characters and special effects for the film ‘Labyrinth’, and the creation of characters and decorations for the creator of the Muppets - Jim Henson. Married to the scriptwriter Caroline Willing, it was thanks to his mother-in-law, Paula Rego, who helped him make the change from cinema and television to museums and galleries. It all began one day on the beach when Mueck made a crocodile in the sand to entertain his children, and the result was so remarkable that people stopped to take a look. Impressed by the ability of her son-in-law’s ability to create a figure that conveyed life, she asked him to make a model of Pinocchio for a series of paintings that she was painting. The result of this task was much more than what was expected, as Mueck presented her with an incredibly realistic child of 83cm in height with an expression between being sardonic and embarrassed. The huge quality of his work didn’t just impress Rego, as it also won over the famous art collector and dealer, Charles Saatchi, who upon seeing the figure in a visit to the painter’s studio intriguingly asked her what it was. Rego explained that it was a creation by her son-in-law, to which Saatchi replied: “that is a young British artist”, and then purchased his work.

Para entonces, Mueck ya se dedicaba por completo al arte, dejando completamente sus labores en cine y televisión. Desde entonces la carrera de Mueck no ha parado de progresar, ganando numerosos reconocimientos, y protagonizando múltiples exposiciones individuales además de colectivas. Lo primero que destaca de la obra de Ron Mueck es, evidentemente, su impresionante realismo. Gracias a una destreza técnica extraordinaria, y a una paciencia y aplicación obsesiva, Mueck es capaz de crear figuras perfectas, que resisten cualquier escrutinio sin abandonar su simulacro de realidad. Saatchi subsequently started to lay the foundation for Mueck’s work.His first big exhibition was “Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection” in 1997, where he took part in the piece named ‘Dead Dad’, a half-scale portrait of his recently deceased father, (with whom he had a complicated relationship), and the piece managed to stand out beside the works of other emerging artists with much more recognition such as Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and the Chapman brothers. It didn’t take long for him to do his first solo exhibition that was held at the Anthony d’Offay Gallery in 1988. By then, Mueck was already living solely off his art, and had left all his jobs in cinema and television. Since then, Mueck’s career hasn’t stopped progressing, and he has earned numerous acknowledgements and led multiple individual exhibitions, as well as collective ones. The first thing that stands out by Ron Mueck’s work is his impressive realism of course. Thanks to an extraordinary technical skill, patience and obsessive application, Mueck is able to create perfect figures that resist any thorough examination without abandoning their pretence of reality. This authenticity down to the last detail is reinforced by the expressions and postures with which he gives his sculptures, managing to make the spectator feel that his subjects are about to move, and continue with what they were doing before the artist froze them in the middle of movement.

Sin embargo la proeza estética es solo una parte de lo que hace enorme a Mueck como artista, y tampoco se trata de la parte más importante; lo más interesante del escultor nacido en Australia es como logra poner esa habilidad técnica al servicio de un discurso intimista (cuando lo más sencillo es ser devorado por la espectacularidad visual de sus creaciones) un discurso que amplifica jugando con los tamaños de sus esculturas, y la manera en que esto afecta a nuestra percepción. But the aesthetic feat is just a part of what makes Mueck a huge artist, and it’s not the most important part either. The most interesting part about the Australia-born sculptor born is how he manages to put that technical skill at the service of an intimist discourse (when the simplest thing is to be devoured by the visual spectacularness of his creations); a discourse that enlarges by playing with the sizes of the sculptures and the way in which this affects our perception. Whether it is creating giants or people of a fraction of their own size, Mueck manages to subvert the hyperrealist aesthetic. This gives his creations a surrealist element that enriches the emotional part of his discourse, opening it to a multiplicity of interpretations, and provokes a reflection to achieve something so basic, yet so complicated at the same time like stimulating observers who have taken in the whole of his works. Mueck’s talent and technique is at the service of emotion.

The sci-fi inspiration is evident in its suspended engine, modelled according to the SS Enterprise turbine, and the handlebars are shaped in tribute to the speedsters in the Star Wars universe. Besides being a piece that is worthy of any museum exhibition, this motorcycle is approved and ready for the road. FIFTH ELEMENT La estación meteorológica The Fifth Element escribe un nuevo capítulo de la fructífera saga de colaboración entre MB&F y L’Epée 1839. Haciendo gala de su magistral lenguaje lleno de referencias a la ciencia ficción clásica, la firma experimental suiza utiliza las estaciones meteorológicas de mediados del Siglo XX como base, para construir un modelo en forma de estación espacial intergaláctica pilotada por su característico alien bautizado como Ross. Compuesta por cuatro esferas, cada uno con un respectivo instrumento (reloj, termómetro, higrómetro, barómetro) la complejidad del conjunto queda clara cuando conocemos que, sin contar el reloj (que cuenta con un movimiento esqueletizado de 8 días de reserva de marcha completamente rediseñado) la nave y los instrumentos están compuestos por más de 500 componentes individuales, y es de ahí que surge su nombre, el Quinto Elemento, porque el conjunto es mucho más que sus cuatro funcionalidades separadas.

‘The Fifth Element’ weather station has written a new chapter in the fruitful collaboration saga between MB&F and L’Epée 1839. Showing off their ingenious language full of references to classic science fiction, the experimental Swiss firm uses the weather stations from the middle of the 20th century as a base to build a model in the shape of an intergalactic space station piloted by their characteristic alien named Ross. Made up of four spheres with each one being an instrument (clock, thermometer, hygrometer and barometer), the complexity of the whole piece is clear when you discover that, without counting the clock (featuring a skeletonised movement with a completely redesigned 8-day power reserve), the space station and the instruments are made up of more than 500 individual components, which explains its name, The Fifth Element, because the whole piece is much more than the four individual functions.

Aunque los cereales son la base de nuestra alimentación, en nuestro país los que utilizamos en forma de grano suelen limitarse al arroz y el maíz. A pesar de que este panorama ha cambiado un poco con la popularización de pseudocereales como la quinoa, aún queda un mundo por explorar en el tema. Por eso hemos elegido seis de nuestros cereales y pseudocereales favoritos para ser utilizados en forma de grano (de preferencia integral), con la idea de que los incorpore a sus ensaladas, sopas, salteados, y cualquier otra preparación a la que le quiera dar un toque distinto y más interesante desde el punto de vista nutricional.

Although cereals are the bases of our diet, what we use in our country in the form of grain is usually limited to rice and maize. Despite this scene having changed a little with the popularisation of pseudocereals like quinoa, there is still a world to explore on the subject. That’s why we’ve chosen six of our favourite pseudocereals to be used in the form of grain (wholegrain preferred) with the idea of them being added to your salads, soups, stir-frys and any other preparation to which you’d like to give a different and more interesting touch from a nutritional point of view.

AMARANTO AMARANTH Este pseudocereal ha sido históricamente, junto al maíz, una de las bases de la dieta de los pueblos mesoamericanos. Se trata de un alimento muy completo, con un contenido de proteína de 16% aproximadamente, una proteína calificada con 75 puntos sobre 100 por la FAO y la OMS (la leche tiene 72 puntos, y la soja 68, por ejemplo) gracias a su completo perfil de aminoácidos. Se trata de un grano pequeño y de sabor suave que se puede usar igual que usaríamos el arroz, y al que además podemos ‘inflar’ igual que el maíz para hacer palomitas. Entre sus numerosos beneficios se encuentran el aporte de vitaminas A, C, D y K, el facilitar el proceso digestivo, y un alto contenido de lisina, calcio, hierro, y ácido fólico. Además no contiene gluten. No por nada fue seleccionado, junto a la quinoa, como uno de los alimentos cultivados por los astronautas en los viajes espaciales desde 1985. Together with maize, this pseudocereal has historically been one of the dietary bases of the Middle American nations. It’s a very wholesome food with a high protein content of approximately 16%; a protein rated with 75 points out of 100 by the FAO and the OMS (milk has 72 points and soya has 68, for example), thanks to its complete profile of amino acids. Amaranth is a small grain with a light taste that can be used in the same way as rice, and which we can also ‘inflate’ like maize to make popcorn. Among its numerous benefits, we find a contribution of Vitamins A, C, D and K, it facilitates the digestive process and contains a high content of lysine, calcium, iron and folic acid. It’s also gluten free. Amaranth wasn’t chosen by chance, along with quinoa, as one of the cultivated foods used by astronauts in space travel since 1985.

CEBADA|BARLEY Aunque se trata de uno de los cultivos europeos tradicionales, en España su consumo en grano es muy residual y limitado a recetas tradicionales locales. Entre sus propiedades nutricionales se cuentan el ser una gran fuente de vitaminas del grupo B, vitamina K, ácido fólico, y lisina. Además tiene un bajo índice glucémico, y es alto en fibra soluble y fibra insoluble. En grano lo podemos encontrar completamente integral, o en su versión perlada. La primera es de preparación más laboriosa, ya que su cocción requiere de un remojo previo de 8 horas; en el caso de la cebada perlada, se cocina prácticamente igual que el arroz. Aunque la versión integral cuenta con más fibra, la versión perlada aún tiene bastante más que otros granos refinados. Una vez hervido podemos utilizarlo en ensaladas, sopas, o guisos, por ejemplo. Tiene un contenido de gluten bastante más bajo que el trigo, por lo que es una opción interesante para quienes busquen disminuir el consumo de estas proteínas, pero evidentemente no para quienes sean celiacos. Although it’s one of the traditional European crops, its consumption in the form of grain in Spain is very residual and limited to local traditional recipes. Among its nutritional properties, we find a large source of group B vitamins, vitamin K, folic acid and lysine. Barley also has a low glycemic index, and it is high in soluble and insoluble fibre. In grain, we can find it completely wholegrain or in its pearl version. The former is the most laborious way to prepare, as it requires to be previously steeped in water for 8 hours; and in the case of pearl barley, it’s cooked practically the same as rice. Although the wholegrain version has more fibre, the pearl variety still contains a lot more in comparison to other refined grains. Once boiled, we can use it in salads, soups or stews, for example. It has a gluten content much lower than wheat, which makes it an interesting option for those looking to reduce the consumption of these proteins, but it’s obviously not for those who are gluten intolerant.

Millet may be used in salads, to make vegetable hamburgers, soups, and in its ‘inflated’ version (which you can make at home or buy ready made) to make crunchy chocolates or a breakfast cereal.

FARRO|Emmer Este cereal, estrechamente relacionado con la espelta, la escanda y el trigo (pertenece a la familia Triticum) tiene una larga historia, conociéndose versiones salvajes datadas hacia el 8000 a. La colección OI 18 -presentada en la Faculté de Pharmacie de Paris- fue la primera pasarela oficial de Noir Kei Ninomiya, la firma del diseñador japonés Kei Ninoyama, y en ella lució toda la creatividad y originalidad que han hecho del nipón uno de los nombres nuevos más interesantes de la moda actual. Utilizando su distintiva técnica de fijar tul, organza, o poliéster, a una ‘cuadrícula’ para esculpir de esta forma la siluetas (sin necesidad de dar una sola puntada), creó looks imponentes que complementó con bikers, trenchs, y abrigos; todos ejecutados en su característico e innegociable negro. Mención aparte merecen los magníficos tocados florales, obra de Makoto Azuma (otro de nuestros favoritos), que funcionaron como el complemento perfecto para una propuesta que no hace más que confirmar que no hay que perder de vista a Ninoyama.

The AW 18 collection presented in the Faculté de Pharmacie de Paris was the first official catwalk by the brand, Noir Kei Ninomiya, which belongs to the Japanese designer, Kei Ninomiya, and he showed off all the creativity and originality during the presentation which has made the Japanese designer one of the most interesting new names in contemporary fashion. However, the ‘Mini Walk’ by IPO Sports changes this situation completely, thanks to its ultra-compact design. With a length of 140 cm, a running surface of 120 x 46 cm and an elevation of just 4.7 to 9 cm above the floor, this treadmill can be stored practically anywhere, and its weight of 25 kg assures that it’s easy to move. SALÓN NÁUTICO DE DENIA El pasado 1 de mayo, en la Marina de Dénia, se clausuró el XI Salón Náutico de Dénia, con nuevo giro para acoger más expositores que ha resultado un completo éxito. Por eso Gabriel Martínez, su director, aseguró que “esta edición va a marcar un antes y un después en el certamen… seguiremos trabajando en este formato de Salón. Estamos muy contentos ya que hemos multiplicado por 2,5 los expositores… lo que nos demuestra que nuestro Salón está funcionando muy bien”. En cualquier caso, esta Edición ha destilado madurez y profesionalidad en todo momento, con un interesante y apretado programa de actos que, unido al atractivo de las novedades expuestas, ha supuesto un completo éxito certificado por una masiva afluencia de visitantes, por lo que felicitamos a Gabriel Martínez y todo su Equipo.

LUXURY NAILS El pasado día 9 de marzo tuvo lugar la inauguración del nuevo espacio LUXURY BEAUTY & NAILS, situado en la calle Cirilo Amorós 82 de Valencia, con la asistencia de numerosos invitados que disfrutaron del cátering y de la buena música. El local, dedicado a la belleza integral, ha sido remodelado por la interiorista Valeria Bonomi y el arquitecto técnico Sergio Herrera. Un proyecto gestado con mucha ilusión, que se puede percibir en los detalles de cada una de las áreas del salón dedicadas a los diferentes servicios.

UN DÍA ENTRE VIÑAS El pasado 12 de abril la marca de enoturismo de alta calidad en la CV “Un día entre viñas”, vinculada a la empresa valenciana Globality, presentó en la Marina de Valencia la programación de eventos para 2018 con la presencia de sus bodegas colaboradoras. “Un día entre viñas” es una de las iniciativas que forman parte del programa VLC Gastronomía de la Fundación Turismo Valencia, y pretende convertirse con el apoyo de la Diputación de Valencia en una alternativa al turismo de sol y playa en la provincia de Valencia, con el vino y las bodegas como grandes protagonistas.
