WELCOME
W
elcome to the Lyceum, and to this production of Martin McDonagh’s startling, thrilling and funny tale of life in rural, west coast Ireland.
I have wanted to stage a McDonagh play at the Lyceum since the start of my tenure as Artistic Director in 2004. McDonagh’s unique perspective on the comic tragedies of everyday life means that few writers match his capacity to unsettle and disturb, even as he makes you wince with laughter. As evidenced by a string of awards – including a Tony Award for Best Play for The Beauty Queen of Leenane; a Best Original Screenplay BAFTA and Best Original Screenplay nomination at last year’s Academy Awards for In Bruges; a previous Academy Award for Best Short Film; and an impressive clutch of Tony, Laurence Olivier and Critics’ Circle awards for his plays since 1998 – McDonagh is a writer at the top of his game, and I’m proud to be bringing his work to the Lyceum’s stage. In a Season of theatre featuring stories about families, this portrait of a dysfunctional relationship between mother and daughter is a perfect fit. I hope you enjoy the show!
