WELCOME TO THE LYCEUM Seven plays and four centuries of drama – 2013/14 promises to be a Season full of the excitement and colour that makes theatre such a joyful and important part of our lives. This autumn, it’s going to be murder at the Lyceum! We open with a double-bill of crime – introducing Ian Rankin’s very first stage play, Dark Road, which I’ve co-written and directed. Find out what happens when Scotland’s first female Chief Constable is drawn back into the case of serial killer Alfred Chalmers. And murder strikes twice with Crime and Punishment as the talented Chris Hannan brings Dostoyevsky’s epic classic novel vibrantly and violently to life. At Christmas we’re returning to tradition with a heart-warming adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol – snow, carols, good cheer (and the odd humbug!) abound in a show that will delight all the family – so do make sure you book early, we’ve got some great family ticket packages on offer! 2014 kicks off with theatre at its most thought provoking in Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night – followed

by theatre at its most witty with Noël Coward’s delightful Private Lives. And we close with two great world premières – Tim Barrow’s big and bawdy Union followed by David Haig’s tense thriller Pressure. Every year we aim to provide diversity and choice, to offer plays which amuse, amaze, intrigue and above all, entertain. We strive to be accessible to everyone – whether you come to one show or enjoy fantastic benefits and savings with a Season Ticket. So do come and join us - I look forward to keeping you dramatically entertained over the coming months!

Alfred Chalmers is a serial killer who has spent 25 years behind bars for the bizarre and gruesome murders of four young women in Edinburgh. isobel mcArthur is Scotland’s first female Chief Constable and one of the team responsible for putting him away. But Chalmers’ conviction has always haunted her. Approaching retirement and still hungry for answers, isobel decides to revisit the case a decision which drags her, her fellow officers and even her own daughter back down into the maelstrom of fear, horror and uncertainty which threatened to engulf them a quarter of a century before. This is top Scots crime writer Ian Rankin’s debut stage play, co-written and directed by the Lyceum’s Artistic Director, Mark Thomson. Tense, tough and gritty it brings the brilliance of Rankin’s story telling sharply into focus as a gripping psychological battle of wit and will is played out between Chalmers and McArthur.

CAST Award-winning Scottish actress Maureen Beattie (Casualty, The Bill) will play the lead role of Isobel McArthur, supported by a superb cast including Sara Vickers, Robert Gwilym, Philip Whitchurch, Ron Donachie, Nicola Roy, Jonathan Holt and Belle Jones.

Glenfiddich is proud to support Dark Road, the first ever stage play written by three times winner of a Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award, Ian Rankin.

One of the most extraordinary novels of all time, Crime and Punishment gets inside the mind of a starving, destitute student who commits a brutal double murder. Raskolnikov is surrounded by the harsh injustices of the world; the grime of poverty and prostitution; unscrupulous pawnbrokers chasing debts; and a sister about to marry someone she doesn’t love to keep her family alive. His guilt is unbearable. Only Sonya, a downtrodden prostitute, can offer any chance of redemption. As Raskolnikov enters a dangerous cat and mouse game with the masgistrate, a psychological thriller unfolds that probes how far humanity might go when driven by disillusionment, and whether any crime can be justified by a higher purpose. Chris Hannan’s stage adaptation is an exciting, fresh and accessible new way to explore Dostoyevsky’s masterpiece, realised by the award-winning creative team behind The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain, re-united for this co-production with the Citizens Theatre Glasgow and Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse. Cast Adam Best, Mabel Clements, George Costigan, Amiera Darwish, Chris Donald, Cate Hamer, Jessica Hardwick, John Paul Hurley, Jack Lord and Obioma Ugoala.

•A• CHRISTMAS CAROL By Charles Dickens •

Adapted for stage by Neil Duffield

Treat yourself to a generous helping of traditional Christmas fayre with our classic tale, beautifully directed by Andrew Panton, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. This much loved story perfectly captures the magic of Christmas and positively sparkles on stage with an ensemble cast playing the many memorable characters - Bob Cratchit, Jacob Marley, Mrs Fezziwig, Tiny Tim and, of course, the old humbug himself, Ebenezer Scrooge Esquire! Scrooge is shown the cruel mistakes and misconceptions he has made during his life when the three ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future visit him one cold and wintry night in December. He comes to his senses and realises that there is more to life than being mean and miserable – and that a kind heart and generous spirit make the world a happier place for everyone. With Christmas carols, a wonderfully evocative set and the odd flurry of snow, this show will bring the joy of Christmas straight to the heart of Edinburgh. Recommended for ages 6 – 106!

UNION

Directed by Mark Thomson Previews: 20, 21 March 2014 Tickets on sale: 10 February 2014 A rather timely romp in this year of referendum in Scotland, Union is a brand new play about the original Act of Union of 1707, featuring a riotous bunch of historical figures. Prepare to be led from the bawdy taverns of Edinburgh’s Old Town to the court of Queen Anne in London. Tim Barrow says: “Before writing this play, I knew nothing about the Act of Union in 1707 – I wasn’t taught it at school. When researching these incendiary times, an amazing cast of characters was uncovered and, above all, I found the poetry of Allan Ramsay and fell under his spell. The events are incredible. Scottish MPs took money and titles to write their Parliament out of existence and their poverty-stricken, powerless citizens were left to struggle on as best they could. I am so excited to share this incredible story with Lyceum audiences.”

PRESSURE Directed by John Dove

A co-production with Chichester Festival Theatre Previews: 1, 2 May 2014 Tickets on sale: 17 March 2014 An intense true-life thriller, centred around the most important weather forecast in the history of warfare. Pressure is about Sir James Martin Stagg, the Scottish meteorologist charged by Eisenhower to set the date for the D-Day Landings. David Haig is an award-winning actor and playwright and his extraordinary and little-known story about Stagg is directed by John Dove (Of Mice and Men). David Haig says: “My play is about a forgotten hero. A Scottish meteorologist – modest, tenacious and brilliant – who helped to save Europe in 1944. I’m absolutely thrilled that this Scottish story is to open at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh.” lyceum.org.uk/pressure

Brian Cox CBE, Honorary Patron with Shonaig Macpherson, Chair, Royal Lyceum Theatre Company.

Philanthropy makes things happen. From the earliest days of civilisation, philanthropists invested in the arts to enable artists to realise their dreams and bring them to life for the benefit of society. Imagine a world without the work of Shakespeare, Mozart or Michaelangelo… they all depended on the support of philanthropic patrons to achieve artistic ambitions which have inspired so many generations since. And so it is true of the Lyceum. Scotland has a long and impressive history of investing in society through public art forms. We believe in reaching out and investing in the talent of Scotland to establish a creative legacy for future generations. If you share our vision then we would love to hear from you please contact us on 0131 248 4800 or at development@lyceum.org.uk.
