This is a period of political uncertainty and civic upheaval ‌in these times more than ever we seek refuge in the theatre: an engine of empathy and play, a forum of understanding and ideas, a place where, through the prism of a great story, we can discover ourselves anew and hopefully have some fun in the process.

PERFORMANCES & PRICES
1968. Midlands MP Enoch Powell has something to say. Something he feels needs to be said. Something that could divide Britain forever.
Previews:
1992. Oxford academic and daughter of a Caribbean immigrant, Rose Cruickshank wants answers. Enoch's controversial words about immigration shattered her childhood. Will a meeting with the man himself allow her to find the inner peace she desperately craves?
Evenings:
Enoch Powell's 'Rivers of Blood' speech is the post-war's most polarising political speech. Chris Hannan’s (The Iliad, The Lyceum) powerful play asks how a politically divided country moves forward in the wake of a crisis. What Shadows is presented by Birmingham Repertory Theatre and marks the return of Scottish actor Ian McDiarmid (Star Wars) to The Lyceum stage for the first time in 45 years, bringing one of Britain’s most infamous politicians to life in a searing performance that has been hailed by critics.

BY BRIDGET BOLAND
4
Scottish Premiere
6 - 28 OCTOBER 2017
"West Bound in the Dress Circle. East Bound in the Stalls." The whole theatre becomes a stage and all of Europe the actors in Bridget Boland’s explosive 1947 drama, Cockpit. You enter The Lyceum, but take your seats in Germany, 1945 in a provincial playhouse being used as a makeshift transit camp for displaced persons from across the continent. As the play unfolds around you, British officers start to organise convoys for repatriation east and west. But agreement is not so easily achieved: one woman refuses to go West with collaborators; a Polish couple are terrified to travel East with the Russians; a Yugoslav partisan will not leave until he’s confronted a Chetnik hiding backstage. Many have no wish to go ‘home’ at all.

12 - 21 OCTOBER 2017 DIRECTOR Ros Philips
PERFORMANCES & PRICES Preview:
Thursday 12 October 8pm £10 (Preview tickets on sale from 11 September)
Evenings:
"You want books, I'll give you books!" Cast your mind back to 1982 - Margaret Thatcher sends the British Fleet to the Falklands, Channel 4 comes to the living room and Prince William is born, but this play has nothing to do with all that. This play is about activism, community and fighting for acceptance with words, music, humour and heart. On Edinburgh’s Forth Street, two friends Bob and Sigrid are opening their new lesbian, gay and feminist bookshop, ‘Lavender Menace’. A trailblazing venture that will become the beating heart for Edinburgh’s LGBT+ community. Now on the eve of the shop’s 5th birthday, sales assistants Paul and David take a look back at its origins, its importance, its celebration of queer culture, how things have changed for the better (maybe) ... and straight away, the arguments begin! Love Song to Lavender Menace is a beautifully funny and moving exploration of the love and passion it takes to make something happen and the loss that is felt when you have to let it go. An LGBT History Month Scotland Cultural Commission. Script developed with support from Playwrights' Studio, Scotland. Thanks to the support of Edinburgh International Book Festival and Red Bridge Arts. 6

DIRECTOR Wils Wilson
Every autumn, two and a half thousand pinkfooted geese fly from Greenland to winter at Fala Flow, a protected peatbog southeast of Edinburgh. From this windy plateau, writer and singer Karine Polwart surveys the surrounding landscape through history, song, birdlore and personal memoir. Ideas of sanctuary, maternity, goose skeins, Scottish football legend and medieval medicine all take flight, in this compelling combination of story and song. Having performed sell-out runs at Edinburgh International Festival 2016 and Celtic Connections 2017, Wind Resistance returns to The Lyceum, this time on the main stage.

BY MARGUERITE DURAS ADAPTED FOR THE STAGE BY
Fleur Darkin & Jemima Levick
10
World Premiere 20 JANUARY 3 FEBRUARY 2018
"Very early in my life it was too late." In 1984 the great French novelist Marguerite Duras wrote the story of her own youth in Vietnam, a personal truth told in passionate, vivid fragments. These incandescent glimpses of remembrance became one of the most acclaimed and widely read books of modern French literature. Now three of Scotland’s major performing arts companies are collaborating in theatre and dance to bring her story to the stage; taking us back to 1929 when a fifteen year old girl crossing the Mekong Delta first catches the attention of an older Chinese man and accepts a ride in his chauffeured limousine. She has no idea how this chance meeting will change her life forever. 50 years on, looking back on their illicit affair which flared and died, she finds the intensity of her first love still burning bright in her memory. It illuminates a past fraught with the confusions of the lovers’ ruthless desire, her own dysfunctional family and the divisive colonial culture which pulled them all apart. This unique collaboration with Stellar Quines and Scottish Dance Theatre brings this exotic tale of remembered passion to new life in an original stage adaption by awardwinning director Jemima Levick and visionary choreographer Fleur Darkin. Fusing spoken word, music and evocative dance, this production promises to be an irresistible blast of sensual heat for the dark days of January.

15 FEBRUARY 10 MARCH 2018
"Vanity, like murder, will out." We find ourselves in Georgian Edinburgh where the elegant New Town is springing up all around, and the newly opened Assembly Rooms are the centre of social life and romantic intrigue. Despite being betrothed to him since birth, Letitia Hardy finds herself out of favour with the charming and arrogant Doricourt upon his return from Europe, as he declares that continental woman are so much more sophisticated than 'dull Scottish lassies'. Determined not to marry without love, Letitia formulates a hilarious plan to capture his attention: behave so badly that he calls off the wedding, and then seduce him in disguise! Meanwhile, Doricourt’s close friend Sir George, has a beautiful new wife, the country-born Lady Frances. Escaping his overprotective gaze for an afternoon, she draws the attention of the rake, Courtall, who vows to seduce her. A witty riposte to Farquhar’s The Beaux Strategem, Hannah Cowley’s rediscovered gem turns the tables on the farcical goings-on and has the women coming out on top. As well as transposing this restoration comedy from London to Edinburgh, Tony Cownie’s adaptation will have all the wit, mischief and sumptuous design which audiences have come to expect from his ebullient recent productions at The Lyceum, The Venetian Twins and Thon Man Moliere.

PERFORMANCES & PRICES
In a sleepy French provincial town, a rhinoceros rampages across the market square. Another crushes someone’s cat.
Preview:
A woman sounds the alarm: it is the townspeople themselves who are transforming into these raging beasts. As more and more of the citizens embrace their future as rhinos, just one man – the drunkard Berenger – refuses to transform. But why does he feel so out of step with everyone else? And what will his refusal to conform cost him?
Evenings:
Eugène Ionesco’s classic 1959 play is an uproarious absurdist farce – and a chilling examination of conformism, nationalism, fascism and fundamentalism that has been compared with Orwell’s Animal Farm and Camus’s The Plague. It considers the countless ways in which humans are content to adapt themselves to new and horrifying circumstances, and give in to poisonous ideologies. Alongside its piercing political insights, it is comic, thrillingly theatrical and deeply human, focusing on the unlikely hero of the everyman Berenger, and the possibility of resistance to what might seem inevitable. This production is presented in a new version by leading Scottish playwright, Zinnie Harris, directed by the celebrated founder of Istanbul’s DOT Theatre, Murat Daltaban. A co-production with Edinburgh International Festival in association with DOT Theatre Istanbul.

BY AUGUST STRINDBERG ADAPTED BY DAVID GREIG
16
Scottish Premiere
27 APRIL - 12 MAY 2018
"Life offers a thousand means by which we can hurt each other." Young artist, Adolph is in love with his new wife, the successful novelist Tekla, and why would he not be? Charming, vivacious and experienced, she has been his passion, his inspiration and his education. As he anxiously awaits her return to their seaside retreat, Adolph finds solace in the words of a stranger. But comfort soon turns to destruction as old wounds are opened, insecurities laid bare and former debts settled in a tight spiral of psychological manipulation, love, betrayal and revenge. The great master of modern drama, August Strindberg, considered this portrait of an intense sexual triangle to be his one true masterpiece. Tony Award winner Stewart Laing returns to Scotland to direct an adaptation that bristles with sexual tension and paranoia. Famed for his striking visual style, Stewart’s acclaimed work with his own company Untitled Projects, Scottish Opera, the Royal Court and theatres throughout Scotland, places him firmly as one of this country's foremost theatre makers.

By Peter Handke, in a translation by Meredith Oakes
18
31 MAY - 2 JUNE 2018
Take a moment to watch our world go by. Some years ago playwright Peter Handke was sitting in an Italian piazza. Suddenly men carrying a coffin emerged from a house and transformed the square into a stage, lending each vignette that followed – a woman walking her dog, a couple having an argument, a man jogging – special meaning. Inspired by this experience The Hour We Knew Nothing of Each Other is a play without words, narrated by music and animated by unspoken interaction. This production gives the simple pleasure of people watching a vibrant dramatic life as the audience weave a narrative out of the everyday scenes of a city. This 450 character production will be taking to The Lyceum stage directed by Lyceum Associate Artist Wils Wilson, in association with Janice Parker Projects. The Hour We Knew Nothing of Each Other will feature an all-Edinburgh community cast.

SUPPORT US
Whether its £1, £10, £100 or more, please give what you can and support The Lyceum’s work both on and off our stage. Here’s how donations can make a difference ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S DEVELOPMENT FUND
SUPPORT OUR FUTURE TALENT
Creating theatre takes time and money. We are dedicated to ensuring that our artists have the resources to make theatre of the highest quality for The Lyceum stage.
Supporting our work with disadvantaged young people in schools, community centres and through our thriving youth theatre.
£100 employs an actor for a day to work with a writer on a new script.
£10 buys a bursary session for a child at our Lyceum Youth Theatre.

ADOPT A LYCEUM HONEY BEE, AND HELP US BE GREENER We are committed to reducing our environmental impact across all of our practices. From our new rooftop beehives to energy efficient lighting, help us to be greener every day. From just £1 you can adopt a Lyceum Honey Bee. All proceeds from adoptions go towards The Lyceum’s green initiatives.

WAYS IN WHICH YOU CAN SUPPORT The Royal Lyceum Theatre Company Ltd is a registered charity (SC010509) and we seek to cover our costs each year. We balance a need for income with ensuring that money is not a barrier for those wishing to access the arts. Therefore tickets sales alone are not enough to cover the full costs of making theatre. With the tightening of public funding we rely on the donations of those that are excited by, and wish to support our work.
• Become a Lyceum Patron from £10 a month • Make a one off or regular donation to one of our appeals • Leave a donation in your will
ALL CONTRIBUTIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU.

Relaxed Performance
A relaxed performance is adapted to contain less intense sound and visuals to reduce anxiety for those with Autistic Spectrum conditions and to support anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed environment.
