SPRING 2 14 lyceum.org.uk

THANK YOU FOR PLAYING A LEADING ROLE The Royal Lyceum Theatre Company’s aim is to reach as wide an audience as possible, whatever their age or experience of theatre going. As a registered charity, The Lyceum relies heavily on the commitment of all our supporters in order to achieve this mission. We receive approximately 50% of our total income from public sector grants (The City of Edinburgh Council and Creative Scotland). The other 50% is generated through heavily subsidised ticket prices, venue hire, sponsorship and donations. We would like to thank our Corporate Supporters and Partners, and the Trusts and Foundations who are supporting Season 2013/14. Additionally, particular thanks go to the many individuals who have chosen to donate to The Lyceum. Without the support and commitment of all our donors we would not be able to continue to present Seasons of such a high calibre. GRANTS

WELCOME This spring, we present four striking productions, each unique and positively bristling with theatricality. I hope that the rich variety of style, voice and story will encourage you to join us for as many of them as you’re able to. In January, Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night will grace our stage. A terrifying and intensely moving depiction of an American family grappling with those elusive and tricky commodities of family life: truth and honesty. Addiction, love and the ability to face themselves and each other are at the heart of this masterpiece of human observation. And just in time for Valentine’s Day, Noël Coward’s Private Lives offers an evening of quixotic wit around the deliciously complicated relationships of two couples on honeymoon in the South of France. Two of them have been married before. To each other. And so the fun begins… The second half of our spring programme launches two World Premières and tells two stories that changed our world. Tim Barrow’s Union takes us back to the original Union of Scotland and England in

1707 in an energetic and highly theatrical romp through the Royal Mile, Kensington Palace and the Scottish Parliament. The climax of our Season comes with Pressure, written by, and starring, the fantastic Olivier award winning actor, David Haig. Another extraordinary story on which history hinged as weatherman James Stagg, the son of a Dalkeith plumber, is charged by General Eisenhower to make the call on when and whether D-Day should go ahead. Suddenly the play’s title makes absolute sense! We look forward to welcoming you to The Lyceum in 2014.

Tim Barrow’s play is an energetic and highly theatrical romp through the raucous leaking taverns off the Royal Mile, Kensington Palace and the Scottish Parliament. Union is rich in famous historical figures such as Daniel Defoe and Queen Anne, as well as our great Scottish poet - Allan Ramsay - who finds love in Grace, a prostitute in the bawdy and dangerous world of Eighteenth Century Edinburgh. Don’t miss this big, foul-mouthed yet eloquent story as it leaps onto The Lyceum stage in the year of referendum. Cast Includes Irene Allan, Liam Brennan, Tony Cownie, Ifan Meredith, Sally Reid and Josh Whitelaw.

Prior to performances of Union, at 6pm on 28 March and 4 April, the Lyceum Youth Theatre presents 7 Billion Others And Me – see page 10 for details.
