WELCOME to the LYCEUM
Spring 2012
W
elcome to a new year at the Lyceum and what a line-up we have for this part of the Season.
In January we open our second première with a much-anticipated co-production with Glasgow’s exciting Vox Motus Theatre Company – the dark and sinister story of real-life Victorian illusionists, The Infamous Brothers Davenport. Next we have John Steinbeck’s own stage version of one of the twentieth century’s greatest novels, Of Mice and Men. This builds on the Lyceum’s reputation for American plays and follows the outstanding series of John Dove productions of work by Arthur Miller. Our third world première is a joyful and fun new adaptation of The Marriage of Figaro by one of the hottest young writers of the moment – DC Jackson. And finally, the Lyceum Spring Season ends with the striking black comedy, The Lieutenant of Inishmore by Martin McDonagh. We are also out and about in Scotland with The Infamous Brothers Davenport and 27, our wonderful co-production with the National Theatre of Scotland, both touring! As well as Lyceum productions we have a show by our acclaimed Lyceum Youth Theatre, Victim Sidekick Boyfriend Me – part of NT Connections 2012; it’s at the Traverse Theatre in March and at the Lyceum in June. We are also delighted to welcome Southern Light Opera, Edinburgh Grand Opera and, for the third year running, the fabulous Magic Festival Gala, to our stage. Finally, don’t forget to look beyond the work we do on stage at our diverse and inspiring range of Creative Learning activities – with so much on offer, the Lyceum is truly a place where you can enrich your experience of theatre. So take a look inside the brochure, book your tickets and let us entertain you!

In Steinbeck’s gripping masterpiece, two migrant field workers travel through California in search of their very own piece of the American Dream. Armed with nothing but hope, and the dream of one day living and working on their own land, George and his childishly innocent companion Lennie start work on a ranch. New friendships are made and at first life looks good, until gentle Lennie, unaware of his own immense strength, unwittingly shatters their dreams in one disturbingly tragic act. This is theatre at its most powerful. Cast: William Ash, Liam Brennan, Garry Collins, Melody Grove, Steve Jackson, Peter Kelly, John Macaulay, Mark McDonnell, Greg Powrie.

EVENTS
From Martin McDonagh, the creator of The Beauty Queen of Leenane and In Bruges comes this gruesomely absurd (and absurdly gruesome) comedy of Irish Republicanism, rural isolation and the love people have for their pets. When Padriac, a notoriously unstable one-man terror group, hears that his beloved cat is ill, he heads straight back to the small island he calls home. But things are about to get very complicated indeed for the self-styled Lieutenant of Inishmore... Cast includes: Peter Campion, Christopher Fairbank.

Victim Sidekick Boyfriend Me By Hilary Bell Directed by Christie O’Carroll
A Girl commits a crime without punishment or remorse. Her Sidekick is ordered to serve a prison sentence. The Victim’s Boyfriend offers unconditional forgiveness. However, nothing is simple in Hilary Bell’s play about guilt and retribution. Escaping the court’s punishment, the Girl is welcomed into the home of her Victim’s friends and family. At first she takes this for granted, however as she’s affected by their kindness her conscience is aroused – to the point where she craves a chance to atone. But what are they really doing? If it’s not as simple as mercy, if they’re not using her to fill the victim’s place, then perhaps they’re exacting a punishment far more intimate. Christie O’Carroll is the Lyceum Theatre’s Drama Artist, and has been with the company since 2010. In Spring 2010 she directed the highly acclaimed LYT production of Bassett by James Graham. LYT return to the Traverse with a brand new play as part of NT Connections after 2011’s sold out run of Bassett.
