THEATRE MADE IN EDINBURGH SEASON GUIDE 2014/15
WELCOME TO THE LYCEUM
Welcome to our Season 2014/15 which draws together the warp and weft of the classical and the contemporary; of Scottish and international writers; of challenge and celebration; and of society and the individual. I selected these plays in a period of time when weÕre all being asked to define ourselves and also decide what kind of society we want to live in. From BrechtÕs Grusha to IbsenÕs Hedda, from young males in thrall to the machismo of contemporary gangster culture to women under bondage to men and the land; at the centre of this Season are a set of very different human beings all trying to find a way to live with freedom and responsibility and good heart.
Their stories offer us hope and challenge: a heroic, tragic, hilarious questioning of what society is and how we live within it. They are stories to alert us to the opportunity to change the world and help us on our way. I look forward to welcoming you to The Lyceum for what will be another fantastic year of theatre, made in Edinburgh.
Mark Thomson Artistic Director

A comedy of fatal errors
2
|
World Premiere 17 September - 11 October 2014
“You died as you lived - an extra in a second rate James Cagney picture being recreated by halfwits and junkies.” Andrew MacPherson has many legitimate business interests: a security firm, taxis, a couple of Renfrewshire bus routes, several pubs and even a secret shareholding in Rangers. Johnny 'the bastard' Glendenning is the self styled Tony Blair of Ulster loyalist gunmen. In a farmhouse far out in the wilds of Ayrshire they are on a deadly collision course. Caught between them are a farmer, his mother, two thugs, a sleazy tabloid hack and some pigs with a taste for human flesh. Kill Johnny Glendenning is a murderous comedy of the Glasgow underworld, taking aim at the tabloid celebrity and macho glamour of the gangster life. Recently writing for Channel 4Õs Fresh Meat, Scottish playwright DC JacksonÕs previous work for theatre includes My Romantic History (Scotsman Fringe First Award 2010), and the trilogy of The Wall, The Ducky and The Chooky Brae. This is JacksonÕs second commission for The Lyceum, following his acclaimed adaptation of BeaumarchaisÕ The Marriage of Figaro. Kill Johnny Glendenning is a co-production between the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh and Citizens Theatre, Glasgow.

BONDAGERS by Sue Glover

|
22 October – 15 November 2014
“Redd up the stables, muck out the byre, plant the tatties, howk the tatties, clamp the tatties... Shear, stook, striddle, stack. Women’s work.’’ A true classic of modern Scottish theatre, and a haunting evocation of a lost way of life. Sue GloverÕs lyrical play with music and song follows six women land workers as they graft and dance their way through a year on a 19th Century Borders' farm. Every ploughman had to provide a woman (a bondager) to work on the farm. If his wife was too busy with family, he hired a woman to work the fields and lodge in his home. Following these women through the passing of the seasons, we feel the rhythm of the land and the harshness, humour, hope and tragedy of those who worked upon it. Lu Kemp has recently directed Don Quixote at ñran M˜r and Arabian Nights at the Tricycle Theatre. We are delighted to welcome her to The Lyceum to direct this wonderful ensemble piece.
“ One of the finest plays of the modern Scottish theatre... raw and rough, warm and tender, funny enough to make your heart dance and moving enough to steal it away.”
DIRECTOR Lu Kemp

“Teddy’s driving as usual, and I’m in the passenger seat, and he’s immediately behind us, the Fantastic Francis Hardy, Faith Healer, with his back to us and the whiskey bottle between his legs” The lame, the ill and the broken-hearted all gather for the Fantastic Francis Hardy: Faith Healer. Travelling with his two companions, Grace and Teddy, Frank roams the small towns of Scotland and Wales healing the sick, trying to find a way home. These are their stories - haunting, tender, funny and passionate, taking us to the heart of what it means to love and to believe. One of IrelandÕs greatest playwrights, Brian Friel is best known for his works Philadelphia Here I come, Translations and Dancing at Lughnasa. Faith Healer is FrielÕs masterpiece, defining his uniquely poetic and intensely human voice: it is a landmark play in the rich landscape of Irish theatre.

The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht translated by Alistair Beaton
10 |
18 February – 14 March 2015
“In the bloodiest of times good people can be found.” Revolution - a city turned upside down. The mighty tumble, the weak break their fall and everyone must take care. As she picks a path through the chaos, a young servant girl must make a choice: save her own skin or sacrifice everything to rescue an abandoned child with a price on his head. The Caucasian Chalk Circle is one of the greatest plays of the last Century, crafted by a grand master of storytelling at the height of his powers and peopled with a wild array of vivid and amusing characters. Written in the wake of the Second World War, this timeless parable continues to ask urgent questions about justice and how to do right when the world goes wrong. The full epic sweep and scale of this powerful drama is brought to life by a large cast of actor-musicians. Rich in music and song this production gives full voice to BrechtÕs powerful tale of the terrible temptation to do good.

by Henrik Ibsen in a new version by Richard Eyre

20 March – 11 April 2015
“For once in my life I want to control a man’s fate” With a distinguished father, a reputable husband and a respectable home, HeddaÕs life is beyond reproach, anything else would be scandalous. For excitement she turns to the lives of others; enchanting and beguiling them, bending them to her will; determined to be a woman of consequence, whatever the consequences. IbsenÕs classic drama of passion and desperation follows a dangerously irresistible woman as she rushes headlong towards a disaster that will embrace all those who have fallen fatally under her spell. Amanda Gaughan is an Associate Artist at The Lyceum. Most recently she was Associate Director on The James Plays for the National Theatre Scotland; National Theatre of Great Britain and Edinburgh International Festival.

World Premiere 24 April - 16 May 2014
“What the hell’s going on?” After writing The Servant of Two Masters (recently adapted as West End hit One Man, Two Guvnors) Goldoni followed up with this timeless comedy of mayhem-inducing mistaken identity. Estranged twins, Zanetto and Tonino are unlike each other in every wayÉ except that they look exactly the same. When they both arrive in the same town on the same day each seeking a bride-to-be, romantic entanglements soon become hopelessly confused. Before lunchtime, insults, threats, proposals, offers of duels and boxes of jewels have all ended up in the wrong handsÉ sorting it all out in time to get married is going to be murder! Lyceum Associate Artist Tony CownieÕs fresh take on this riotous farce of confusion and calamity brings a delightfully Scottish flavour to a dizzying and inventive romantic comedy. Expect to be tickled pink as some of ScotlandÕs finest comic talent serve up a big slice of frivolous fun.
