THEATRE MADE IN EDINBURGH
ANNIVERSARY SEASON 2015/16 - SPRING GUIDE
WELCOME TO THE LYCEUM The Royal Lyceum Theatre Company’s 50th Anniversary Season has already opened in fine style with a star-studded, sold-out run of Waiting for Godot, a deliciously audacious stage adaptation of Sarah Waters’ Tipping the Velvet and a magical Christmas show, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We enter the New Year with compelling contemporary writing from Conor McPherson in The Weir; followed by Arthur Miller’s most famous play, The Crucible; I am Thomas, a brutal comedy with songs from theatrical innovators Told by an Idiot with poet Simon Armitage; a new take on a classic with Chris Hannan’s The Iliad; and a World Premiere from the Makar Liz Lochhead – Thon Man Moliere. I hope you’re as curious and excited as I am to see the rest of the season unfold.

The Weir
15 January – 6 February 2016
“There's no dark like a winter night in the country. And there was a wind like this one, howling and whistling in off the sea. It was this type of night now. Am I setting the scene for you?” You are guaranteed a good laugh and warm welcome when you join the local lads in Brendan’s Bar, County Leitrim. When a young woman arrives from Dublin, the fellas impress her with their local ghost stories but as the night draws in, Valerie will share a haunting tale of her own. Winner of the Evening Standard, Critics’ Circle and Olivier Awards for Best New Play, Conor McPherson's moving, elegiac tale is a masterpiece of modern theatre. Quietly compelling and strangely chilling, The Weir is the perfect story for a winter night.
“ Rich, vivid and often wonderfully funny... I have rarely been so convinced that I have just seen a modern classic.” Daily Telegraph
“ This is my play of the decade... a modern masterpiece.” The Express

World Premiere 23 March – 9 April 2016
“It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong.” Voltaire, 1770 Collaborating with award-winning poet Simon Armitage, theatrical innovators Told by an Idiot present a wildly comic and provocative piece of musical theatre. Edinburgh; a cold town on the edge of civilisation, in very much the Year of Our Lord, 1696. The church has spies everywhere. Here, you keep your counsel and choose your words with care… unless you are Thomas Aikenhead – a loud-mouthed, smart-arsed and likeable student at the university. A man in the wrong place at absolutely the wrong time… trouble is brewing for Thomas. A rich vein of black humour is exploded in this account of the last person in Britain to be executed for blasphemy. Using Told by an Idiot’s internationally celebrated theatrical invention, we glimpse into Edinburgh’s dark past to reveal this true story with universal resonance. A riotous and unsettling drama which swings between 1696 and the present day, I Am Thomas is performed with an original live score.

THE ILIAD by Chris Hannan
8 |
World Premiere 20 April – 14 May 2016
“There is the heat of love, the pulsing rush of longing, the lover’s whisper, irresistible – magic to make the sanest man go mad.” The Gods of Olympus take their sides and the fates of all men hang in the balance. On the battlefield of Troy the scene is set for the final conflict to claim the beautiful Helen. Only the invincible Greek warrior Achilles can tip the scales of war to glory or defeat, but humiliated by his leader Agamemnon, he is stubbornly refusing to join the fray. Homer's Iliad, the greatest and most influential epic poem ever written, tells of the tragic and bloody climax to the ten-year siege of Troy; the darkest episode in the Trojan War. This great tale of gods and heroes, love, jealousy and revenge is brought to visceral life in a brand new stage adaptation by award winning Scottish playwright Chris Hannan (Crime and Punishment, Elizabeth Gordon Quinn, Shining Souls).

‘or Whit got him intae aw that bother...’
by Liz Lochhead
10 |
World Premiere 20 May – 11 June 2016
“Why do folk not, ever, catch on to themselves?... Ach, gies you another interesting nutter to play...” Welcome to Paris at the time of Louis XIV. Come backstage and meet the King’s theatre company – a troupe of grande dames, old hams, ingénue’s and of course, their leading man. Right at the centre, author of their dramas and cause of all their troubles – thon man Molière. In constant threat of debtor’s prison, in big bother with church and state and – worst of all – disastrously in love with the wrong wife, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin de Molière writes brilliant comedies inspired by a desperate life. But telling the truth is a dangerous business and getting his latest drama on stage could be the death of him! Poet and playwright Liz Lochhead is the author of the acclaimed Perfect Days, and Mary Queen of Scots got her Head Chopped Off, as well as celebrated Scots versions of Medea, Oedipus, Antigone and Molière's great trio of masterpieces. This brand new, original play tells the story of her hero, the great comedian Molière; his scandalous marriage, his scurrilous plays and the irresistible creation of his infamous and celebrated satire Tartuffe.
