WELCOME Firstly let me thank you for your support for the 2016/17 Season at The Lyceum so far. We've had a number of firsts! Wind Resistance was the first Lyceum show in our rehearsal studio and became a sell-out hit of the International Festival, while The Suppliant Women had at its heart a community chorus the like of which has never been seen on The Lyceum stage. Both have gone on to tour, taking 'theatre made in Edinburgh' far and wide. Jumpy gave us a much needed comic lift in the autumn and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland reminded us of the simple joys of theatrical magic and invention.

Charlie Sonata, and Linda McLean bringing us a story from Edinburgh's old town in Glory on Earth.

There are just as many delights on offer for the first half of 2017. I'm looking forward to being thrilled and chilled out of the post-festive slump by our Australian ghost story Picnic at Hanging Rock, before my favourite Shakespeare, The Winter's Tale, featuring some familiar faces in the cast. We've teamed up with Edinburgh International Science Festival for a brilliant meditation on genetics and identity in A Number, with accompanying talks. Then there's vintage wit from Coward in Hay Fever and new writing from two of Scotland's greatest living playwrights, with Douglas Maxwell's modern day fallen angel

I'm passionate we hear your voices in our theatre so do join the conversation this season - on social media, in person at a post-show discussion or by emailing me at David@lyceum.org.uk

Photography: Aly Wight

Beyond The Lyceum building itself look out for our Youth Theatre presenting pertinent teen drama Girls Like That at the Traverse Theatre. Meanwhile, we're proud to be working with Edinburgh theatre companies Lung Ha and Grid Iron to create a performance in an exotic location. For those of you who want to ‘do’ as well as ‘view’, look out for new classes and workshops available for both young people and adults. See pages 17 – 19.

Australia's Malthouse Theatre and Black Swan State Theatre Company present

a new play adapted from Joan Lindsay’s novel by Tom Wright

2

UK Premiere 13 – 28 JANUARY 2017

“ I know you’re there… Miranda? Miranda!” On a summer’s day in 1900 three Australian schoolgirls grew tired of their classmates and yearned for adventure. Escaping their teacher’s watchful gaze they absconded, away from the group and towards the beckoning Hanging Rock – never to be seen again. Picnic at Hanging Rock has haunted the Australian psyche for over a century both in print and on film. In Tom Wright’s chilling adaptation of Joan Lindsay’s classic novel, five performers struggle to solve the mystery of the missing girls and their teacher. Euphoria and terror reverberate throughout Appleyard College, as the potential for history to repeat itself becomes nightmarishly real. Renowned Australian theatre makers Malthouse Theatre and Black Swan State Theatre Company join us at The Lyceum with a haunting tale for January which proves horror lurks on a warm, summer’s day.

 “ This retelling of the Joan Lindsay cult classic proves the book’s theme remains relevant – and will terrify the pants off you.”

The Winter’s Tale By William Shakespeare

4

10 FEBRUARY – 4 MARCH 2017

“ Though I am not naturally honest, I am sometimes so by chance.” The Lyceum returns to Shakespeare with acclaimed director Max Webster (King Lear with Michael Pennington) presenting a uniquely Scottish take on this bitter-sweet masterpiece. When King Leontes suspects his wife Hermione of adultery, his jealousy tears the kingdom apart. The queen is banished and believed dead, while their daughter Perdita is abandoned among simple shepherd folk. Passionate tragedy interweaves with pastoral comedy, leading to one of Shakespeare’s most magical and moving finalés. This late, great play is performed by a talented company of actor-musicians in a vibrant and lyrical production with composition by Aly Macrae (The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart and The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil). The cast includes Lyceum favourites Maureen Beattie (The Cherry Orchard) and Jimmy Chisolm (Thon Man Molière); and John Michie (Taggart, seen recently in Grain in the Blood at the Traverse Theatre). 10 MARCH – 1 APRIL 2017

“ Couldn’t you see that all my flippancy was only a mask, hiding my real emotions – crushing them down desperately!” Welcome to the home of the eccentric Bliss family. Siblings Simon and Sorel are speculating about whether their retired actress mother, Judith, might return to the stage, as their father, David, attempts to write his new novel. They have each invited a guest to stay and as the party settle down to a post-dinner parlour game, the hapless visitors become playthings in the Bliss’ self-made melodrama. Revelation, romance, and outright outlandish behaviour set the tone of this 1920s comedy. Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh joins with Citizens Theatre to present this riotous farce charting the unconventional antics of a self-dubbed ‘bohemian’ family of four. Award-winning Artistic Director of Citizens Theatre, Dominic Hill takes on this funny and biting exploration of the games people play to avoid confronting the realities of life.

Grid Iron, Lung Ha Theatre Company, RZSS Edinburgh Zoo & Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh present

at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo

8

1 – 9 APRIL 2017

For all of history this creature has evaded discovery. Until now…. Dr Vivien Stirlingshire is a cryptozoologist. Yes, that’s right, a cryptozoologist! She travels the world seeking out hidden and, as yet, undiscovered “animals” – the ones that they tell you aren’t really there – you know the type: the Yeti or that Loch Ness Monster. Dr Stirlingshire is unveiling her latest discovery at the world famous RZSS Edinburgh Zoo. Her brother Henry, the Zoo Manager, has organised a grand welcoming party but really he believes his sister has an overactive imagination – “she’s not a proper scientist; after all she believes in The Wild Haggis, no really she does!” This family friendly show takes you on a journey through RZSS Edinburgh Zoo, where you will meet various characters and forms of life, from squabbling Zoo guides to dancing penguins (not real ones of course) to…. Well, the truth is Dr Stirlingshire doesn’t know what to call it yet. Maybe you can think of a name for the ….??? Supported by Creative Scotland. Part of Edinburgh International Science Festival. Performance approx 90 mins. Age recommendation 5 years +

A NUMBER by Caryl Churchill

10

6 – 15 APRIL 2017

“Have you met the others?”

DIRECTOR

Zinnie Harris

Bernard has spent 35 years believing he’s an only child, one of a kind, until he learns the chilling truth. He’s one of ‘a number’ of clones resulting from a nefarious genetic experiment. When he confronts his father, Salter, questions of identity and morality result in an explosive exchange with dire consequences. A Number showcases Caryl Churchill’s consummate skill in creating brilliantly compelling drama bristling with ideas, and is directed by another accomplished playwright, Zinnie Harris. This dynamic two-hander is the starting point for a powerful debate about the boundaries and ethics of science. To serve the intensity of this award-winning play, The Lyceum will transform the stage into an intimate 250-seater studio space with a provocative piece of theatre at its heart. Who Do You Think You Are? A Number is presented in partnership with Edinburgh International Science Festival who will offer talks inspired by the play before the show on the evenings detailed below. Each talk costs £8.50/£6.50 concessions or £25 for a joint ticket for the talk and the show: Online Identity Saturday 8 April, 7pm A discussion with writer and musician Pat Kane.

Scottish Identity Tuesday 11 April, 7pm A conversation between novelist James Robertson and a prominent scientist.

Me, Myself and I Thursday 13 April, 7pm A conversation between author Christopher Brookmyre and Lyceum Artistic Director David Greig.

Think of a Number Saturday 15 April, 7pm A conversion between Director Zinnie Harris and Lyceum Artistic Director David Greig.

World Premiere 29 APRIL – 13 MAY 2017

“ W hat do you have to do to hold on?’ Chick arrives back in Scotland for a reunion with his old mates Gary and Jackson only to find Gary’s daughter has been the victim of a life-changing car accident. The antiseptic smell of the wards, the relentless beep of the life support and the sterile hospital bed contrast sharply in Chick’s eye with the young wild-haired girl lying there unconscious; inspiring this downtrodden man to embark on a quest to save her life. With redemptive purpose Chick wades out into the city night and amidst the swaying revellers, the streetlights and the scream of sirens he searches for an answer – a gutter-bound dreamer looking at the stars. This funny, lyrical, booze-soaked odyssey is a World Premiere professional production by acclaimed Scottish playwright Douglas Maxwell. It is directed by Matthew Lenton whose Lyceum credits include Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the acclaimed work of his own company Vanishing Point, hosted by The Lyceum for the Edinburgh International Festival 2016.
