WELCOME

Spring 2009

Hello and welcome to the Lyceum’s Spring 2009 programme. The 2008/09 season has been a great success so far, with the house packed almost every night for Macbeth, Mary Rose and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe! I hope you were able to catch at least one of them.

THE MAN WHO HAD ALL THE LUCK ARTHUR MILLER 16 January – 14 February 2009 Pages 4-5

We intend, of course, to continue this run of form in the new year, and to get us underway we’ve a great show from that great humanist and master dramatist, Arthur Miller. His early play The Man Who Had All the Luck is perhaps less well-known than his other work, but don’t let that fool you – its story of the inexplicably fortunate David Beeves is every bit as intense and moving as you would expect from the author of Death of a Salesman and All My Sons.

THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP

Next up is The Mystery of Irma Vep, a strange and hilarious comedy from the pen of Charles Ludlam. It’s a unique and dazzling play, such are the number of character and costume changes, all performed at breakneck speed by a cast of just two actors – suffice to say that the mix of Egyptology, vampire hunting and werewolves will make for a night of extreme silliness and immense fun!

SAM SHEPARD

To round off the season, we have two brilliantly dark dramas. The first is a twisted family comedy from America’s south Californian wasteland, Sam Shepard’s Curse of the Starving Class. And to follow there’s Michael Frayn’s gripping and compelling drama about the rival sides of the nuclear arms race during the Second World War, Copenhagen. We’re lucky enough to have Michael Frayn himself giving the pre-show talk for this show (see p11) so book your tickets soon as demand is sure to be huge.

17 April – 9 May 2009 Pages 10-11

I hope you’ll see something here or in the following pages that will grab your imagination and bring you through our doors for the very special experience that is the Lyceum Theatre. We look forward to welcoming you!

THE MAN WHO HAD ALL THE LUCK 16 January – 14 February 2009 ARTHUR MILLER DIRECTED BY JOHN DOVE By arrangement with Josef Weinberger Limited The Man Who Had All the Luck, despite encompassing the same great creativity and values identified in his other masterpieces, remained one of Miller’s least known works for more than fifty years until it was revived in 2000 and staged thereafter in several theatre productions. Set during the Depression, this is a moral drama that examines the American Dream and questions how one man can fail while another, though no more capable, can prosper in life. The play centres upon David Beeves, who is seemingly immune to disaster and wonders when his luck will run out. His good fortune highlights the tragedies of those around him as he tries desperately to find justification for his successes. David’s futile quest for a validation of his identity results in a deepening paranoia that questions the existence of God and meaning of life. Directed by John Dove, whose previous acclaimed productions at the Lyceum include Miller’s All My Sons (2007) and Death of a Salesman (2004), The Man Who Had All the Luck is a powerful and tragic drama concerned with human freedom and centred on an American family struggling to find reason in their world. Cast includes: Philip Cumbus, Matthew Pidgeon, Andrew Vincent, Ron Donachie, Perri Snowdon, Kim Gerard, Richard Addison, Greg Powrie, Peter Harding and Isabella Jarrett.

THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP 20 February – 14 March 2009 A PENNY DREADFUL CHARLES LUDLAM DIRECTED BY IAN GRIEVE A co-production with Horsecross Arts Presented by arrangement with Samuel French Limited

Evenings Tuesday – Saturday at 7.45pm Matinees 25, 28 February and 4, 7, 14 March at 2.30pm

Subtitled ‘A Penny Dreadful’, The Mystery of Irma Vep is a fastpaced and wickedly funny parody of the gothic horror and romance genres, mixing in references to a whole host of novels and films, from Rebecca and The Hound of the Baskervilles to The Mummy, Frankenstein and Dracula. If Daphne du Maurier had written a post-modern episode of Midsomer Murders starring the Marx Brothers, this might very well have been the blood-curdling result!

First Look Friday Sponsored by the List Preview performance Friday 20 February at 7.45pm ALL TICKETS £5 (on sale now)

Eminent Egyptologist, Lord Edgar Hillcrest, has happily remarried after the violent death of his first wife, Irma. But her memory still lingers in the house, as does the mystery surrounding the demise of their son Victor at the hands of a suspected werewolf (also named Victor). What hope does the new Lady Hillcrest have of shaking off the curse of Mandacrest when her husband returns from Cairo with an ancient mummy in tow?

Post-Show Discussion with members of the cast Tuesday 3 March (FREE)

Steven McNicoll (Trumpets and Raspberries, Vanity Fair, Laurel and Hardy) and Andy Gray (Art, Guys and Dolls) star in this deliciously irreverent romp, playing all of the upstairs and downstairs residents of Mandacrest, as well as the ghoulish supporting cast of vampires, werewolves and Egyptian goddesses. Prepare yourself for an evening of ribald punnery and unbridled silliness – the perfect antidote to the midwinter blues! WARNING: Contains sudden noises, flashing lights and werewolves.

CURSE OF THE STARVING CLASS 20 March – 11 April 2009 SAM SHEPARD DIRECTED BY MARK THOMSON By arrangement with Josef Weinberger Limited Sam Shepard’s Curse of the Starving Class comically dissects the corruption of American values.

Evenings Tuesday – Saturday at 7.45pm Matinees 25, 28 March and 1, 4, 11 April at 2.30pm

On a run-down Californian farmstead, at the edge of the desert and within migrating distance of the Mexican border, an alcoholic husband and his wife are each scheming to sell off their family home without the other’s knowledge, while their children struggle to come to terms with the harsh reality of the world they’ve been born into. Debt, stolen dreams and a fear of the future fuel the family’s self-destructive behaviours, as they sacrifice their meagre values, and each other, to attain something of the better life they envision for themselves.

First Look Friday Sponsored by the List Preview performance Friday 20 March at 7.45pm ALL TICKETS £5 (on sale from 9 January)

Behind Shepard’s exploration of the corruption of money and the all-consuming lure of corporation is a painfully funny portrait of a family in decline, unsure whether to reject or embrace the label of America’s ‘starving class’ while teetering on the edge of poverty, sanity and society itself.

Post-Show Discussion with members of the cast Tuesday 31 March (FREE)

Shepard’s work explores many similar themes to playwrights such as Arthur Miller and Eugene O’Neill, but through more contemporary eyes, and with a brash, raw energy that befits the playwright often described as the “bucking bronco” of American theatre.

COPENHAGEN 17 April – 9 May 2009 MICHAEL FRAYN DIRECTED BY TONY COWNIE

Evenings Tuesday – Saturday at 7.45pm

This intense, absorbing and powerful piece of theatre from Michael Frayn brings our 2008/09 Season to a pulsating end.

Matinees 22, 25, 29 April and 2, 9 May at 2.30pm

Copenhagen is a gripping drama in which the mysterious actions of German physicist Werner Heisenberg in 1941 are pored over and intensely questioned. Frayn’s piece is a fictional exploration of Heisenberg’s real-life meeting with his old friend and mentor Nils Bohr, and the huge significance it may have held for the entire world. Years after the event, their ghosts debate the true meaning of the encounter, and try to understand exactly what happened that night.

First Look Friday Sponsored by the List Preview performance Friday 17 April at 7.45pm ALL TICKETS £5 (on sale from 9 January)

The ill-fated meeting splintered their friendship and provoked decades of speculation and debate. Having laid down the guiding principles of quantum physics in the 1920s, the two then found themselves on opposite sides in the Second World War. Led by Heisenberg, German science rushed to develop a nuclear capability – both to generate power and to create a bomb. But were Heisenberg’s motives so clear cut? Did he really want to put the atom bomb in Hitler’s grasp? And if so, why did he come to Copenhagen and consult so freely with his half-Jewish teacher and colleague? There emerges a fascinating portrait of the lives and work of these two men. Driven to explore the boundaries of science, they were also placed by history in a time when their work could, and would, cause unthinkable suffering and horror. With Bohr’s perceptive wife Margarethe beside them, the two scientists try to decipher what Heisenberg had hoped to achieve, and the implications of their meeting in Copenhagen.

SUCCESS 12-14 March 7.30pm (14 March 2.30pm) NICK DRAKE Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh A metropolitan, poetic tale of luck, money, values, false friends and true love. Tom Rakewell is a lucky man. In one mid-summer night he makes a fortune and meets Lucy, the love of his life. Suddenly, Tom is catapulted into the vibrant city life of the elite and surrounded by well-wishers, led by the charming, if slightly dubious character, Nick Shadow. But at what price success? Just when Tom thought he had it all, he finds himself falling into the dark heart of the city where everyone is struggling to survive. What he finds there – from the anarchic pizza delivery boys Ping and Pong, to the all-seeing Kid in the rusty shopping trolley – shows him a world that is stranger than he ever imagined. Inspired by Hogarth’s The Rake’s Progress, in Success the 18th and the 21st centuries collide.
