WELCOME TO THE LYCEUM
H
ello and welcome to Spring 2010 at the Lyceum. As we enter a new year (and indeed a new decade) I’m proud to reflect on the Lyceum’s recent successes, and excited to think about what we have in store for the future. We open our Spring season with The Price, a brilliant piece of drama from Arthur Miller. It’s one of his later plays and certainly one of his best. The play tells the story of two estranged brothers forced to confront their tense and difficult past – I’m sure you’ll love it just as much as I do.

JO CLIFFORD 19 March – 10 April 2010 Pages 8–9
We then relocate from the East Coast of America to the Wild West of Ireland, for Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane. The title might suggest a fairly gentle story, but this is actually a dark and twisted comedy, laughout-loud funny at times, brutally cruel at others.
World Première THE CHERRY ORCHARD
The Lyceum has worked very successfully with Jo Clifford in the past, with wonderful adaptations of Faust and Anna Karenina, so I’m very excited to be able to present Jo’s Every One as our third play this Spring. It’s a beautiful and life-affirming examination of family life in the face of tragedy and I can’t wait to direct it.
Later in 2010…
We close our season with another big hitter in the form of John Byrne’s hilarious new take on Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. It was John‘s adaptation of Uncle Vanya (or Uncle Varick as our version had it) that wowed Lyceum audiences a few years back and I’m sure this will have the same impact.
BLUE HEN
Add to that two great visiting productions in the shape of Macbeth (Edinbugh Grand Opera) and Des Dillon’s Blue Hen (NLP productions) and we’re set for a fantastic few months of live entertainment at the Lyceum – I hope you’ll join us!

Master playwright Arthur Miller wrote The Price towards the end of his career, and it stands as proof of his continuing brilliance. Two brothers, Victor and Walter, are brought back together again after years of cold silence. Victor is a policeman, disappointed by his life and tired of his troubles. Walter is a renowned surgeon, rich and successful. And their different fortunes stem from a single decision made in their childhood. They are reunited to look through the possessions of their long-dead father before his New York attic is torn down. As they try to decide what can be sold, and what price to accept, old secrets are revealed and bitter resentments surface. It’s a tense, funny and moving story of how families tear themselves apart, and was described by the New York Times as ranking alongside “if not above Death of a Salesman”. John Dove brings his expertise with Miller to the Lyceum stage (following his wonderful productions of Death of a Salesman, All My Sons and The Man Who Had All the Luck), joined by a strong cast including Greg Powrie, Aiden Gillet, Sally Edwards and James Hayes.

First Look Friday
Maureen lives a lonely life, with only her ancient mother Mag for company, tending to her every need, putting up with years of insults (and doling out a few of her own).
Curtain Raiser (see pages 16–17)

Martin McDonagh’s brutal but irresistible work has taken audiences by storm in recent years; cruel, sharp dialogue is combined with an uncanny ability to find laughter in some pretty unpleasant situations. Jo Clifford, creator of stunning and critically acclaimed stage versions of Anna Karenina and Faust, presents her newest story to Lyceum audiences. Every One is a beautiful and poetic look at how ordinary people deal with extraordinary tragedy. An everyday family, Joe, Mary, Kevin and Mazz, are at the centre of this tale. They are somehow aware their lives are being witnessed by a theatre full of people. But with nothing to mark them out as particularly unusual they are slightly puzzled by the attention. All of this changes when Death comes calling. Plunged suddenly into a situation where the things they considered ‘real‘ can no longer be relied upon, Joe, Mary, Kevin and Mazz must reassess their lives. Their different perspectives on life and on what it means to ‘live’ are altered forever – and the things that really matter are made painfully clear. Every One is a beautifully moving story that will resonate with those who have lost someone they love.

Short-course introduction to Chekhov Saturday 17 April and Saturday 24 April
With another brilliant piece of work, John Byrne shows (again!) exactly why he is so renowned on the Scottish arts scene. Byrne (The Slab Boys, Tutti Frutti), crafted an exceptional version of Uncle Vanya (reworked and retitled as Uncle Varick) for the Lyceum a few years back. His love affair with Chekhov now resumes with this brand new adaptation of the Russian master’s classic political comedy The Cherry Orchard. Relocated to northern Scotland in the late 1970s, Byrne’s retelling nonetheless retains the central story of a once-grand family brought low by the changes of time and tide.
The Ramsey-Mackays are not used to struggle, but as their debts mount and the vultures begin to circle, they must face In conversation with John Byrne losing their ancestral home and the cherry orchard that Tuesday 20 April at 6pm Tickets £5 (concessions £3, Under 18s free) goes with it.

An up-and-coming young investor, Malky McCraken, is sniffing around and determined to make his name in business. But while his main target is the family estate, the charms of the family’s adopted daughter Verity may yet be enough to distract him... Director Tony Cownie (Copenhagen, Mary Rose, Vanity Fair) brings his expert comic touch to this new play from one of Scotland’s finest writers.

Edinburgh Grand Opera presents
MACBETH Adapted from the original Shakespeare by Giuseppe Verdi
26 – 29 May 2010
Edinburgh Grand Opera is back, renewed and revitalised, with an exciting new production of Macbeth, Giuseppe Verdi’s most profound and powerful opera. Inspired by Shakespeare’s celebrated play, the opera delves into the darkest recesses of human nature, exploring the dictums “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” and “Great men are almost always bad men”. Evenings
Wednesday – Saturday at 7.45pm
TICKET PRICES
£10–£25 Concessions: £2 off full price, Wednesday and Thursday. Over 60s, Under 18s, Students, Unemployed and People with disabilities.
“EGO is a company increasingly seeking to prove that the words, ‘amateur’ and ‘opera’ need not be a contradiction in terms.”
The dramatic tension of Macbeth becomes almost unbearable as the eponymous king and his fiendish queen struggle to retain their grip on power. Their unholy alliance with the forces of evil, marks their meteoric rise as well as their cataclysmic fall. Meanwhile, Malcolm and his exiled lords struggle to bring order to chaos. In Verdi’s own words: “This tragedy is one of the greatest of human creation... Let us, therefore, try to do something out of the ordinary.” With new music and a new production team, managed by Artistic Director, Michael Richardson and Musical Director, Neil Metcalfe, audiences can look forward to great music and drama in equal measure.

“How do you tell the truth? About what actually happened? You know, tell the actual truth?” Today is a good day for Marky – he’s invented the chocolate cola milkshake (and persuaded Dig to drink it), bagsied the best bench (before all his mates) and acquired a pack of cigarettes (to woo Soph with). But the day soon takes a devastating dive and a seemingly straightforward crime becomes increasingly confused. As the friends struggle with their story, gawpers change the facts, and the papers report something different each day, the truth becomes harder and harder to pin down. LYT brings you a very real, very vivid story about finding the truth in every lie, about friendship, tough choices and chocolate milkshakes. For more information visit www.lyceum.org.uk/mugged
