INTRODUCTION HS2 is a new, high-speed railway line that links London, the Midlands, the North and Scotland. It will serve over 30 million people and will create 30,000 jobs. It is the biggest infrastructure project that the UK has seen in decades. HS2 journeys will be low carbon, reduce emissions from other modes of transport and be increasingly powered by renewable energy sources. As enabling works are approaching completion, we are excited to carry out the main works across the project. We have some great people working right the way across the project, and we are excited to share their success.
Full HS2 network includes: ■ 343 miles of railway track ■ 45 miles of tunnels ■ 37 miles of viaducts ■ 119 miles of cutting ■ 120 miles of embankment ■ 30,000 workers

PLANT INNOVATIONS Supplying the first Hybrid Excavators to BBV on HS2 Lynch is pleased to have supplied the first 20T and 40T Hybrid Machines to our customer BBV JV, working on HS2. These were delivered to Washwood Heath, Sublot 4, where there are already over 20 Lynch machines on hire.

Merrill Lynch, Director, and Tom Law, HS2 Project Manager, attended the site to meet with BBV's works manager, and see the Machines at work. These Hybrid Excavators are powered by intelligent Hybrid Technology, which reduces fuel consumption and minimises emissions, without compromising on productivity. Additionally, being ultralow noise helps create a better working environment for everyone on site. Lynch Operators have completed advanced eco-driver training to ensure that we get the very best out of these machines, maximising efficiency, and power. This combination of Hybrid Technology and eco-driver training reduces the overall carbon footprint of the project, helping to tackle important environmental issues.
“
These machines reduce our impact on the environment and offer moneysaving opportunities for our customers. It’s great to be able to bring innovation to this site and the project.

LEADING THE WAY TO A GREENER FUTURE UK’s first 3T fully electric Excavator available for hire We were proud to be the first UK Plant Hire Company to take delivery of a 3T Volvo ECR25 Electric Excavator, with multiple machines now on the fleet. We are passionate about our sustainability journey and building a greener construction industry — growing our Electric Fleet is one of the ways we can do this. We trialled the Volvo ECR25 across three HS2 sites, to showcase benefits such as cleaner air and reduced noise pollution which resulted in positive feedback from Operators and our customer. One of our Operators reported on the performance of the excavator, stating that: “the excavator is powerful, and you barely notice any difference to its diesel counterpart, with smooth hydraulics, grading, tracking and slewing. It is a very good machine.”

The benefits of this fully electric machine include:
■ ZERO emissions ■ Reduction in noise pollution ■ Lower vibrations for greater operator comfort
■ Maintenance free battery ■ Fast-charging option ■ Zero tail swing for work in confined spaces Chris Gill, Director, explained the reasons why we chose to invest in Volvo Electric Excavators, commenting that: “We are proud to be the first plant hire company in the UK to be running this size electric machine, and we look forward to seeing them on our customers job sites, creating great output, with zero emissions! We are focused on our sustainability plan, and our carbon footprint as a business. We spoke with SMT GB in 2020, and as soon as we knew these products were available, we expressed interest in trialling it. We received fantastic feedback from operators and customers on the 3 separate trials we carried out. To place a multiple machine order with SMT GB, makes complete sense." This continues our legacy of supplying the first 1.5T full electrics to the project in 2019.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR PEOPLE AND THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF YOUR CUSTOMERS HS2 success – an article by Ben Cross, Head of People and Culture Our people are at the very heart of everything we do at Lynch, and the HS2 Project is an amazing example of how our team are working hard to be the best they can be and get it right first time. HS2 is the biggest infrastructure project seen in the UK in a generation, incorporating over 343 miles of track and 30,000 workers. We know that we can only deliver the best possible service to our customers with great people working hard to make it happen. We work closely with our great customers on HS2 to not only deliver the project, but also to be great neighbours, creating career opportunities, play an active role in the local communities where we are working and leaving a positive legacy not only today but long into the future, helping our customers build a better world.

We know that words are not enough, and we need action. This is only possible due our team role-modelling our behaviours: Can Do Passion ■ One Team ■ Respect ■ ■
Working together we can achieve so much more than if we work in isolation from our teammates, our partners, our customers and all the great organisations working hard on the HS2 project. In August 2021 we were awarded the highest ever project score to date on the SCS section of HS2 (919 out of 1000), which as a team we are hugely proud. This award could not be achieved if we didn’t embed our ONE TEAM behaviour into all that we do. We are determined to continue prove that our vision is a reality, and we are being the best for our customers, which allows us to grow as a key partner to HS2. The level of performance achieved on HS2
cannot be achieved without each one of us doing our bit, and this is a fantastic team effort. There is a very bright future of Lynch on HS2, and our team should be very proud of what we have achieved so far, and everything we will achieve moving forward.

TRAINING AND INVESTING IN OPERATORS Successful Careers in Plant Scheme 2021, with several recruits going out to work on HS2 We’re excited that several groups of Careers in Plant recruits have started their journey into the construction industry. Our Careers in Plant Scheme consists of ten days intensive training, which allows Operators to gain 3-4 tickets, from an Articulated Dumptruck, Roller, Forward Tipping Dumper or Tracked Dump Truck.
22
LYN CH O N B O A RD W IT H HS2
They complete theory and gain practical experience on all categories and learn important safety information to prepare them for work. In addition to their training, they spent a day in the Depot with one of our Operator Trainers, undergoing important Plant Familiarisation. These sessions are designed to give Operators a breadth of knowledge across varied plant – they learnt about specific machines, their functionality, as well as important pre-start and function checks. Tessa Leigh, National Recruitment Manager said that “The Careers in Plant Scheme is an amazing opportunity to get into the ever-growing Construction Industry, with the backing of a leading

plant hire company. We understand the need for great Operators, and this scheme helps people to develop the skills they need to advance in their careers with us.” Gez Bonner, National Training Manager, said that “We’ve designed an enhanced training course that not only provides these individuals with knowledge of plant, but also allows them to see what working on a real live site is like. We’ve carefully selected our
24
LYN CH O N B O A RD W IT H HS2
training area, so it allows us to adapt and create new scenarios every day, just like a construction site. We will be working with so much varied plant, all different sizes and all different manufacturers, with the aim that all our trainees will come out of the other side ready for whatever we put in front of them. It is a challenging but rewarding ten days.” All our recruits are now out working across various HS2 sites.
The Careers in Plant Scheme is unique to Lynch, and we are excited to relaunch the scheme in 2022 – watch this space!

SCS JV HS2 VALUES AWARD WINNER Dan Cooper, SCS JV HS2 Values Award Winner – Passionate About Excellence Our partners helping us maintain being the best. We are delighted that Lynch Operator, Dan Cooper, has been recognised by SCS, our customer, and has won the Passionate about Excellence Values Award. This award is a testament to Dan’s hard work and ongoing dedication to the project. Dan has been working on HS2 on a Roller, and as part of our ongoing innovations, he has been trialling the very latest Machine Control technology, going above and beyond to get it right. Dan spoke with Merrill Lynch, Director, about his Award and his work on the project so far. Merrill Lynch: Well done, Dan! Winning this Award is a fantastic achievement. We would love to speak to you about how you won it. What do you think you did right to be recognised for this Award? Dan Cooper: For me, it was important that I did the best I could do, and I did this every day. I will always try to be as helpful as I can around site so that we get the job done. Recently, I’ve been operating a Roller with the new GPS Machine Control system, and so I really wanted to make sure I got it right. I used my own time to get stuck in with the tool and learn my way around it. I also helped

explain how it works around the site, so that we could make the best use of it. I’ll try my best to help anyone on site, other Operators, people on the ground, the cleaners. It makes no difference to me but it’s what is best for the site and helps us all to get it right. ML: Getting it ‘Right First Time’ is important to us. How does that relate to you? DC: Right First Time is so important to me. I am from a military background anyway, so everything I do, I do right. There’s no point in rushing a job, or not giving it your all. When I’m working, I pay close attention to things around me, and I notice the details. I’m passionate about getting it right first time because I want to make sure that I’m not going to have to do anything again. ML: It’s great to hear how passionate you are, especially after winning SCS’s ‘Passionate about Excellence’ award. Can you tell me what passion means to you? DC: I am passionate about my work, and I think that’s what it boils down it. It’s just loving your job. I can’t wait to get out of bed in the morning because I love what I do, and I think having that motivates me. If you aren’t passionate about your work, then you aren’t going to be able to really excel. I want to be the best I can for myself and for the site and
28
LYN CH O N B O A RD W IT H HS2
it’s exciting to see the end results of all the hard work that the team has put in. ML: It’s great to hear you talk about teamwork, as we are one team. How does this factor in to how you work? DC: I have come to realise that if you’re on site together, you are a team. I will help anyone out and if I see you struggling, I will give you a hand. It doesn’t matter who you work for, you just get on with it and work collaboratively for the good of the project. You’re here as a team and you act like a team. I won the award, but I had the whole team behind me, supporting me. It’s a team game. ■
Our customer, SCS JV commented that “Dan has been enthusiastic at every point when implementing new technology, to the extent where he downloaded the application to familiarise himself with the tool during his own time. He shows passion to make the system succeed and his ‘can do’ attitude should be recognised. We as SCS can only achieve innovation with the support of our supply chain, and it would be fantastic to use Dan as an example of how working collaboratively with the supply chain can both upskill SCS and the Supply Chain to provide the best quality solution to our client.” Well done, Dan, thank you for your passion and your ‘can do’ attitude. You and your team continue to make us the best we can be. Thank you to our great partners, Ardent Tide, for their continued support.

Help the Homeless Event in Euston On a cold December Sunday, the Lynch Management Team helped homeless members of the public, as part of an event organised by the HS2 SCS Railways, Area East team. Everyone who took part worked incredibly hard to deliver 300 hot meals and essential items to homeless people within the London borough of Camden. Directors Steve Bremner, Rob
42
Lynch and Steve Sutch were among those in attendance, helping distribute supplies. Lynch sourced over 300 essential items: toothbrushes, toothpaste, blankets, woolly hats, thick socks and more to help people keep warm. We delivered all of the supplies to the site in Euston in the allelectric minibus.

Supplies that were left over from the day were donated to the local foodbank in Euston for distribution to people in need. Steve Sutch said: “This joined-up approach enables us to deliver more together than we could individually, boosting outcomes for local people, ensuring that communities along the route are benefiting from investment in HS2 and helping Britain’s postpandemic economic recovery.”
The whole event was a great example of why collaboration is so important. Everyone demonstrated incredible teamwork and the whole supply chain came together to achieve something good. We are very honoured to have been a part of this, and we welcome the opportunity to give back to the community and help those in need.

Supporting the Iver Environment Centre Lynch are delighted to have been able to work with Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture (SCS JV) to help the Iver Environment Centre, lending them a 1T Dumper for use on their new landscaping project. The Iver Environment Centre is currently restoring their large wildlife pond, and as part of the work a section of the pond is to

be filled in, creating a ‘wildflower meadow island’. The centre needed to move 100 tonnes of sub-soil from their car park to the main site, and access was too narrow for a tipper. The soil was needed to be ready for seeding the meadow. The Iver Environment Centre (situated in the Colne Valley

Regional Park) is a 30-year partnership between National Grid and The Groundwork South Trust – an environmentallyled community development charity working across the South of England. This centre is an important part of the local community and hosts many visits throughout the year. People with physical and learning disabilities can take part in supported volunteering, which can really aid their well-being. The centre provides environmental education for primary schools in the South Bucks, Hillingdon, and Slough areas, providing children with the opportunity to learn about their natural environment. Secondary age children can volunteer, learn about social responsibility, and spend time outdoors. “This will create more open spaces in the centre for visitors who come to enjoy the outdoors and reconnect with nature, as well as creating ecosystems for the local wildlife. Having the
Dumper lent to us helped us to allocate much needed funding elsewhere in our project” Katy, Centre Manager Lynch have been working closely with SCS JV on the HS2 project near the Iver Environment Centre, and so we were pleased to be able to give something back to the local area and help where we can. Lorry safety at Netley School Lynch had an exciting day at Netley School, talking to 400 students about everything road safety. Craig McCormack, Driver Development Supervisor, and Rob Lynch, Director, spent the day with groups of children outside the school, showing them the lorry and talking with them about how we stay safe on the roads. The children were excited to see the lorry parked outside their school, to see what it looks like, to hear the sounds it makes, and to learn what those sounds meant for them. As well as this,
they were even more excited to be able to sit in the driver’s seat of the cab. This helped them to see what the drivers can and cannot see and understand the road from a driver’s perspective. Craig McCormack explained that “the message was focused on how the children can help our drivers to keep them, and their families, safe. We spoke to them in a way that they could understand, we asked questions about what they thought, and we kept them engaged. As a national provider of transport services, we need to be able to engage with communities about road safety, and to keep children safe on their way to and from school. It was great to see the children so interested in road safety.” We were invited by SCS JV to innovate and drive the message of road safety. Brett Westbrook, Area Logistics Manager for SCS commented that “The day went very well and wouldn’t

from the school, with Deputy Headteacher Gareth Morris saying “Thank you for organising such a fabulous day. Really amazing road safety and so practical for the children to understand. The children and adults loved it.” Engaging with local communities is important to us, and we look forward to being able to do more in the future.

MACHINE CONTROL ON HS2 Our GPS Machine Control division was created in January 2020 with the view to offer our customers the best service for their projects. Our GPS Machine Control Centre in Cambridgeshire gives Operators the chance to use and embrace this new technology. They receive classroom training, which is then supported by practical learning, without being forced to learn with simulators which will inevitably be different when they get onto site. All of this helps up to support Operators, and increase skills within the industry. In September 2021 we proudly announced our partnership with CITB in order to get even more operators trained using the very latest GPS Machine Control Technology.

Brett Westbrook, Area Logistics Manager for SCS JV comments that “These Low Entry Tipper Lorries go a long way in reducing risk for Vulnerable Road Users and help us to ensure our HGV movements in London are as safe as possible. This is the future of driving in the city, and we are pleased that Lynch have been able to adopt this new technology. Working on HS2, it is important to leave a legacy and have a positive impact on all the communities we operate within, and higher visibility lorries are just one of the ways we work towards this.”

PLANT INNOVATIONS AND TECHNOLOGY New fleet of Volvo ADTs with Haul Assist out to work on HS2 Lynch are excited to invest in over 15 new A30G Volvo Dump Trucks with Haul Assist. Haul Assist provides our Dump Truck Operators with the information they need to optimise workflow and maximise productivity. This uses On-Board Weighing and Maps and helps contribute to a more efficient site. The Lynch Training Team, Project Managers and Operator Foremen were able to come together with the team at SMT GB to take part in a two-week training event at our GPS Machine Control Training School. The training covered the Haul Assist System, providing our team with the knowledge they need to get the best out of this new and innovative technology. Chris Gill, Director, said that “we understand how important it is to invest in the very latest innovations, to keep us moving forward. Our fleet upgrades mean that we always have modern and reliable equipment on out fleet, and it’s equipped with the latest technology. Volvo’s additional features use technology to help us increase accuracy and work more efficiently on site.” Several of our new Articulated Dump Trucks are already out on hire at busy HS2 Sites.

SUPPORTING PROJECT EDWARD Project Edward: Every Day Without A Road Death is a UKwide road safety initiative, which promotes ‘safe systems’ and aims to create a road network free from deaths or serious injuries. During September, there were events up and down the country, all to promote safe vehicles, road use, and speed. Lynch were pleased to be able to showcase our new Low Entry Tipper Lorry, our 5-Star Direct Vision Standard (DVS) vehicle with high visibility cabs and lower seating positions,
windows and mirrors which are specifically designed to eliminate dangerous blind spots. As a leading provider of Operated Plant Hire, Haulage and Transport within the UK Construction Industry, we know how important it is that we operate safely on the UK’s roads. A safer road environment benefits everyone and helps us to leave a positive impact in the communities we work in. Events like these highlight just how important road safety is!

Working hard to make sure our customers are happy We love hearing from our customers, and we recently received great feedback from Thomas Jackson, Sheet Piling (UK) Limited, whom we work with on HS2:
“
The drivers from Lynch have provided exceptional service and made sure every load is delivered on time. Their professionalism really shines through and they always go above and beyond no matter the scenario. Everything runs smoothly as the drivers keep in touch with the site team and make sure they are aware of the ETA at all times. We know we can count on them to get the job done and meet and exceed the standards required. I could not recommend the drivers and team that Lynch provides with every job enough. They are a credit to the company and deserve all the praise they get.
