The JCC of Greater Rochester will be relevant to every member of our Jewish community. The mission of the JCC is to strengthen Jewish identity and promote Jewish continuity through all stages of life. Announcing the JCC Building Project Dear Members and Friends, The JCC is unquestionably the busiest Jewish neighborhood in Rochester, serving as a primary destination for Jewish engagement and a portal for Jewish communal life. In addition, we proudly serve the entire Rochester community, regardless of age, race, or affiliation, with a state-of-the-art fitness facility and first-rate programs and services. For the past 40 years, we’ve been doing all of that in our current building, which has served us well, with few updates needed in that time. That’s all about to change. As part of the Center’s strategic plan, our members, volunteers, and the management of the JCC have come together to implement an exciting building and renovation project.Increasing and modernizing space for the fitness facility, programs, and services as well as creating a comfortable atmosphere for community gatherings are the goals of this project. We are excited to bring all of these improvements to you…our valued members! Of the Center’s nearly 12,000 members, approximately 80% make use of the JCC’s extensive fitness and aquatics facilities. Our pool schedule is full, with lap swimmers, children’s swim lessons, and aqua aerobics classes. For this reason, the building project includes the installation of a second pool and outdoor splash park/pad. Now, there will be not one but two pools at the JCC to meet all of your aquatics needs all year long! Members expect and deserve state-of-the-art fitness - and while we already have the equipment, we will be adding space and lots of it! You will have plenty of room to stretch and enjoy your work out. We hope this new and comfortable fitness space encourages everyone to get fit and stay healthy. All of the many activities will be more easily accessible for you! With over 1,000 members throughout our community choosing to spend their time at the JCC each day, and hundreds of members from more than 75 community organizations making use of the JCC’s space annually, you will see a tremendous change in the flow and ease of the new JCC. Creating better space where you can get fit, celebrate, learn, and, of course, schmooze is a top priority. For each generation, the JCC has served as a home away from home, enriching our lives through an array of important, fun, and relevant programs and services. The JCC is where we grow from children to young adults, from parents to grandparents, from acquaintances to friends. The JCC keeps our hearts healthy, our minds strong, and our souls enriched. It is our responsibility to make sure this is always true. We are so lucky here in Rochester to have such a philanthropic community. Many have already come forward and pledged to generously support this ambitious but attainable effort, and we cannot thank you enough. But, we will need our entire community to make these plans a reality. If we are fortunate enough to reach our fundraising goal for this project, it is our hope to begin the first phase of the renovations in the late spring of 2015. As we look toward the future, where there will be mothers and daughters, grandfathers and grandsons, friends and family, all enjoying the activities that mean the most to them, we can’t help but smile as we remember our own experiences at the JCC. We are honored and excited to be a part of this project, and hope you’ll share in our excitement for Our Vision, Our Future…the Building Project for our new JCC.

A Time to Remember, A Time to Say Thanks: Honoring the Lives and Legacies of Three Past JCC Presidents This has been a challenging time for our JCC family. During the past year and a half, we said goodbye to three past JCC presidents: Elliot Landsman z'l, Bruce Newman z'l, and Jane Glazer z'l. During this season of Hanukkah, we remember the Maccabees, the heroes who chose to fight for Judaism and Jewish community because, to them, there was nothing more important. In the spirit of this season, we remember each of these past presidents who gave of themselves selflessly, volunteering countless hours to ensure that our JCC community continued to grow and thrive. They helped us move seamlessly into the future while remaining deeply rooted in our shared heritage and past. The JCC will be forever indebted to their dedication and generosity, and is stronger because of their service, leadership, and vision.

Dramatic new additions to our aquatics area Let’s face it – the pool is crowded! Our members want to swim laps, take lessons, participate in aqua spin and aqua aerobics classes, splash, and play. And, everyone should be able to enjoy their favorite activity at once.

Two pools instead of one…it’s like a dream! Members will be able to swim laps uninterrupted in the lap pool, while others will enjoy the current and playing in the new splash park/pad during the summer.

The zero-depth entry will make walking into the pool a breeze for toddlers, preschoolers, and those with mobility issues. Plus, it will ensure accessibility and safety.

The water current in part of the new pool will be fun for kids and provide exercise opportunity for grown-ups.

• An outdoor splash park/pad

The outdoor splash park/pad will help Rochesterians get some vitamin D during the warm months.

• Outdoor seating

New outdoor seating will be a fun, relaxing place for families to enjoy the sun, food, and each other!

You’ll have windows…and lots of them! Treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, and other sweat-producing machines, all upstairs.

• Trying to tone and get buff? Head downstairs for strength training!

Group fitness classes will all be held in the former cardio and strength training rooms – no more wondering where to go.

• There will be a new large area for stretching and personal training – where someone else can kick your butt into shape!

Imagine free Wi-Fi that doesn’t require a purchase for use. Now imagine watching your kids play basketball while you surf the internet or play a game of bridge. Or imagine watching the snow fall while you eat lunch with your grandkids, or the sun shining on your back while you catch up with an old friend. Now open your eyes.

As a family of four, grabbing a snack and coffee together is a favorite part of our day. We can’t wait to see the new Main Street, with its restaurant, Wi-Fi, and extended space for members. This place is wonderful!

will provide closer, more convenient, and, let’s face it, faster access into the fitness center and aquatics areas.

• Freshening up of our auditoriums

Stretching the Limits Parkinson’s Class

All sessions begin in Nov Eight-week group exercise classes. Benefits include improved flexibility of lower back and hip flexors, posture, and balance; increased body awareness; functional exercises for strength training; and the ability to get up from chair or floor. An evaluation must be completed by participants in order to be placed into one of the following classes: Stretching the Limits I Tuesdays & Fridays, 10-11am For those who have limited ability when it comes to walking or getting up from a chair. Some functional exercises included which can be performed while seated. Love to read and share? A new Book Club co-sponsored by the JCC Lane Dworkin Jewish Book Festival and The Resource Place is being led by the JCC’s own Michael Miller. Meeting every six weeks, the group is open to adults. Drop in — no RSVP required. Need additional motivation? “We serve cookies!” Mike says with a smile. “I like to call it ‘Mike and the Bubbes,’” he explains. “I’m most surprised at how much I am enjoying it.” Of course, it’s not restricted to bubbes, and Mike invites what he’d call the “hubbies” to join this eclectic group. There is no cost to attend, and the books do not need to be purchased (they are available at local public libraries). “We follow the same rules as the Jewish Book Festival,” Mike continues. “Books must have Jewish content or be by a Jewish author.” The group itself decides on the books to read, and they alternate between fiction and non-fiction. Mike feels the perspectives of the readers — some Jewish, some not — lead to thoughtful, inciteful conversations. “I’ve been impressed with the high level of discussion.” Recent books the group has read include 97 Orchard (which discusses tenement families through the foods they ate), The Forgetting River (in which a Catholic woman traces her roots to the Spanish Inquisition, only to discover she is Jewish), and The Dovekeepers (a tale of resourceful and secretive women fighting for survival in the desperate days of the siege in the early years A.D.).
