I often feel overwhelmed by theOPENING problemsNIGHT in the world. I look at issues like Linda Hooper: The Power of One — Sunday, March 2, 7pm; JCC Auditoriums, FREE Linda Hooper, the former principal of Whitwell Middle School in Whitwell, TN, tells the moving story of how she inspired her students to hunger, environmental destruction, poverty, cancer, human trafficking, and collect six million paper clips as a way to understand the magnitude of the Holocaust, and teach a homogeneous community about the lives and of others. This March, the JCC is providing the community with a series of opportunities to learn about contemporary problems — both national and global — and what we can each do to make a difference. We’ll learn about secular issues that affect us all regardless of ethnicity, religion, culture, nationality, etc., and then take an extra look at the Jewish values that implore us to do our part.
I hope you’ll join us for this thought-provoking series called The Power of One: Jewish Ethics in Practice. The list of programs and events are on page 5. As Pirkei Avot reminds us, the problems of the world may be great, but we each can make a difference. This March, we will join together and learn how we can get started. — Joy Getnick, JCC Jewish Program Director

A Tribute to Len Freedman This past January, we mourned the loss of Leonard S. Freedman, 78, Executive Director of the JCC of Greater Rochester from 1977 to 1991. During his tenure, Len, together with his late wife, Ann Weiss, greatly expanded JCC programs and facilities. He oversaw the start of the first day care center, the first annual “Bagel Run,” the first major expansion of fitness facilities and equipment, the start of programming for adults with special needs, and the creation of the Holocaust Memorial Garden. The JCC is forever grateful for Len’s vision of a vibrant Jewish community center for all. May his memory be a blessing.

In Fitness, Old Meets New The JCC uses an approach to fitness that looks to the future. Every three years, essentially all of the fitness machines are replaced with the most modern available. Associate Executive Director, Fitness, Wellness, and Recreation Eke Aiono and his staff have remained ahead of the curve in their own training in order to offer JCC members the very latest in fitness routines. A number of years ago, each piece of equipment received its own TV monitor. Now, not only can members watch TV, including movies, but through the use of a Preva® Token provided upon request, members can track their workouts, download an app to their smartphones, compare their progress against weekly goals, and even be greeted by the monitor welcoming them back sby name! Ironically, as the JCC looks to the future in its equipment, it looks to the past in terms of its fitness philosophy. According to Eke, “Fitness is going back to old school.” He says human muscles need to be taught to work together for total-body fitness and that we need to learn to crawl, skip, jump, climb, etc., because these are the movements that, together, make the body completely fit. “Fitness is not so much sitting down pushing weights,” Eke continues. “Practice what you’re going to use! The latest trends in fitness keep you on your feet, teaching your muscles to work together for efficient movement patterns.” JCC Personal Trainer Melanie Mullally works directly with members using the JCC’s latest equipment such as the new TRX® Rip™ Trainers and TRX® Suspension Trainers, which become the basis for all kinds of workouts. Melanie explains, “The body is only as strong as its weakest link. If muscles are tight, weak, or imbalanced, if joints are compromised, or if the body is only trained using strict isolation, then the result will not be optimal performance during activities of daily living and/or recreational activities. Exercises that address mobility will help to create optimal performance during all activities.” The Rip™ Trainer, Suspension Trainer, ropes, kettlebells, medicine balls, and many of the other classes available at the JCC can assist members in reaching their health and fitness goals and guide them in the right direction. Personal Trainers can help tailor a program for each individual’s specific needs/goals. JCC fitness definitely has something for everybody!

JCC CenterStage Presents: The Normal Heart Mar 8-23
• Saturday, March 8 at 8pm • Sunday, March 9 at 2pm • Thursday, March 13 at 7pm • Saturday, March 15 at 8pm • Sunday, March 16 at 2pm • Thursday, March 20 at 7pm • Saturday, March 22 at 8pm • Sunday, March 23 at 2pm Staying silent when you see an injustice in the world can be as devastating as endorsing it. This can be true whether you are talking about racism, sexism, domestic violence, child abuse, or any other human rights issue. As an American Jew, writer/activist Larry Kramer was well aware of the ramifications of turning a blind eye when “it’s someone else’s problem.” The true story of his epic fight is the focus of the Tony® Award-winning play The Normal Heart to be presented at JCC CenterStage March 8-23, 2014. The Normal Heart focuses on the early days of the HIVAIDS crisis in NYC between 1981 and 1984. It follows a tight-knit group of friends who refuse to let doctors, politicians, and the media ignore the truth of the unspoken, unnamed epidemic. The play was first staged in 1985 and received critically acclaimed Rochester production at Shipping Dock Theatre. After the celebrated 2011 Broadway revival swept the Tony®, Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critic’s Circle awards for “Best Play Revival,” JCC CenterStage knew it was time for a new Rochester production.
JCC CenterStage presents The Normal Heart during LGBT Health Month, and a series of events and talks are planned in conjunction with the play. Post-show discussions will also follow the Sunday and Thursday performances with special guest moderators. The play is receiving support from business and social leaders throughout Rochester, including a grant from the Rochester Community Foundation’s LGBT Giving Circle and sponsorship from Rochester’s Dr. Bill Valenti Trillium Health. In an additional recently honored with an Rochester connection, Trillium’s Dr. was award named for the doctor in Bill Valenti received the 2013 Linda The Normal Heart. Laubenstein Award for his 30+ years of caring for patients with HIV and AIDS. The award is named in honor of the doctor depicted in The Normal Heart.
